Getting Your Hands Dirty
Break up the soil before autum and winter rains — the deeper, the better. If the soil is loose, vine roots will take deeper root as they search for water and nutrients.
Plant a cover crop. Cover cropssuch as clover help ballance nitrogen levels in the soil, depending on the soil levels will depend which cover crop to plant. Rye and barley help avoid soil errosion in rainy seasons.
Fencing and pest control is the next step to help, also a vineyard cat or dog can help with rabits etc...
planning and designing, measuring and ordering the vines. spacing is importiant, most vineyards use closer spacing between plants 1.2m and 2.4m, the closer the vines are together the more they compete for nurtiants and water but produce smaller and more intense flavours which is great for Pinot Noir, meter by meter spacing is also a stratergy and helps utalise small spaces. vines will be sprayed and tended by hand and or with an ATV this means you want rows to be 6 feet between the rows.
Get a specialist to give soil amenednment recomendations. soil neutral (around 7 pH) and balance the NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium) requirements for grapevines. These requirements are, Nitrogen: 4 to 8 ppm, Phosphorous: 30 to 75 ppm, and Potassium: (exhangeable) 81 to 500 ppm. Mix ammendments into the top two feet of the soil and let the water carry them down to the roots.
Irrigation systems can be istalled but also hand watering is an option with a long watering each week.

I explored different ways of making the design safer as suggested in my feedback. I felt that this was important to develop as there are lots of kids that inhabit the area. The glass idea I felt took to much away from the design and would be tricky and expensive to clean. My other idea was to place a safety net around the base of the concrete blocks. This is hidden from sight but will still prevent children falling into the water.

Presentation:
I presented these images. A plan, perspective, cross-section, elevation to the class after I printed them onto A3 pages.
The feed back I recived:
- The colours are bright and eye catching.
- Juxtaposing them with the concreete is a good idea.
- It looks interactive and people yould sit and play in the curves of the sculpture.
- When taking the perspectives etc take into concideration the shadows which can dull the colours.
- Saftey wise you could look at adding saftey barriers or moving the structure into the water, to prevent kids playing on it and falling in.
- At night you might not be able to see it, could think of adding some lights.

Research/Idea and concept sketches
I am revisiting my joy take, originally I gained inspiration for the spiral patterns through my interpretation of how joy would look/move, also pulling inspiration from childhood games and toys such as kaleidoscopes.
This week I realised that the spiral shapes link back to my mihimihi in more ways. New Zealand is my roots and I am part Maori, my iwi being Te Aupouri. Even though I am only a 16th Maori it is important to me and grounds me to New Zealand. The koru pattern is seen many aspects of nature, sculpture and art (such as Gordon walters paintings). I want to develop the spirals and link them together more just like the koru patterns and plant does.

TAKE 5
For my design this week I will re-look at my previous mihimihi design of joy. I found the spirals very interesting to work wth and want to see how I could further develop the same spirals with the different programs and skills I've gained since. I feel that the joy concept works best in the space as it is appropriate for the people that use the space e.g children and families. I want to keep the bright colours but change the arrangement and work with lights. The site which the design will be situated consists of large concrete blocks at varying levels, these are directly next to the ocean and often get very wet from the waves.
