battle of the bands au where the nerdy prudes have been in a band since they all became friends in middle school and it’s senior and they finally got enough courage to actually sign up. but their bassist is travis coulson, their friend who transferred to sycamore, and therefore is “not allowed” to perform in battle of the bands. they put up signs for an auditions but no one tries out for the spot bc they’re such losers. then in a lemonade mouth moment steph and richie get detention together (steph for being on her phone, richie for telling the teacher she’s an idiot) and richie finds out steph plays bass. he begs her to join so they can still compete and she honestly does it bc he’s making them sound so pathetic and she feels bad for him. then she joins and falls in love w pete during the practices and they win!

i honestly agree with the idea that pete wasn’t really friends with ruth or richie, and it’s not because of his reactions to their deaths or anything.
i say this because he is the most reactive to ruth’s death compared to grace & steph. also far more reactive to richie’s death compared to grace & stephanie too, but ruth on the other hand is like? majorly more anxious compared to rest of them hearing that richie was murdered, which will play into my take later but anyways.
i believe that pete isn’t really close with the two because of his reactions to the shit they do and say. like every possible moment, he is fidgeting nervously around them, spacing off, correcting them, or ridiculing them. and when he’s not doing that, he’s… trying to be nice, but good god does he seem so damn anxious about it. not to mention when he calls ruth and richie, “fucking nerds” they don’t laugh it off like… friends would? they roll their eyes and become offended. also! also also!!! gosh i love pointing out details, but pete seeming semi-confused at richie’s statements about the body-pillows. if they’ve been friends for years, pete would be used to it by now, completely ignoring it.
also, the lin manuel miranda thing, why is pete going up to richie and saying that? wouldn’t he have gotten a better reaction of ruth, the theatre kid? or is he getting ruth and richie’s interests confused?
they aren’t friends to pete, they’re just people pete decides to hang around with because he has no choice. why doesn’t have a choice? because of the system the school runs on. max, every other popular & cool kid at school, and then, the nerds.
that’s who he’s limited to.
it’s the way they talk and interact with one another that makes me think pete is just not as close to richie and ruth as we think he is.
but you know what, ruth and richie? oh, they’re incredibly close and you can tell. the jabs at one another with no reaction (ex. “who are you trying to impress…? ruth?” and ruth continuing on the joke). the overdramatic faces made toward one another?? also, the fact they tend to stand closer to one another than to pete? there are multiple scenes like that… almost every interaction these two have, you can tell they’re best friends. going back to my point with ruth’s reaction to richie’s death above, she is visibly more anxious hearing that richie is dead compared to every single one of the people being questioned. it’s heartbreaking actually, because this is a person she’s known for, likely, years and it’s just!
it’s so obvious how close they are.
they can joke around with each other because they know they’re joking when they insult one another.
there’s probably reason why pete gets somewhat defensive of richie’s comments about his outfit, or how the idea of him & steph together is ridiculous.
pete cannot tell they’re joking because they’re not as close.
but i do want to throw in. i think ruth and richie consider pete far more of a friend than he does them. they actively seek pete out, they feel like they can make jabs at him because they think they’re close enough pete can take it as joke. they worry about him, and pete just doesn’t think about them the same way (and he doesn’t realize they consider him a friend).
which is… kind of sad to think about!
anyways, that’s my ramble for today
forgive me for any misspellings and grammar mistakes
it’s like 1am rn

Random Satisfying & Clever Moments Of Audio From Dead Boy Detectives - Part 4
There's a few moments in DBD that utilize audio really well, or use sounds that always stick out to me while watching, and these are some of those moments!
This one is a bit of longer one, and might not make sense to everyone, but I'll do my best to explain it below!
Ep. 4 - The Case of the Lighthouse Leapers: The lack of music when Charles gets up after the trauma nightmare, then the addition of just The Wellerman song as he advances on the Night Nurse.
Using sound is very important, but so is the lack of sound. The lack of music or sound effects as Charles starts winding up the music sphere creates tension. After the overwhelming amount of stimuli in his trauma nightmare, the quiet is unsettling. It is the calm before the storm; that moment when everything is too still, too quiet, and you have a gut feeling that something is wrong.
Watching Charles wind the music sphere, speaking with such conviction, yet also composure, after everything she just put him through, it's unnerving. An explosion of blind rage would be expected, not the calculated way he twists the handle, walking and talking with full clarity and awareness of the situation.
The music sphere being wound up also coincides with Charles' emotions. The Night Nurse practically did exactly that to him by forcing him through all of that pain. Charles even acknowledges that she accomplished her goal: to make him crushed and devastated. But she didn't take into account his resilience, his strength; someone else would be helpless and sobbing on the ground after what she showed him, but Charles?
He knows how it felt. He was fucking there. He knows how much it hurt. He knows how unjust and unfair his life and death were. For the Night Nurse to play it for him like a slideshow presentation, as if he needs to be taught, pisses him the fuck off. Charles is furious that this woman has the audacity to walk into his nightmares and lecture him, as if she has any comprehension or understanding of what it was like to experience it.
I think it's part of why he mentions the memories specifically when he's about to kick her: "Those memories are not why I choose to stay here!"
Charles is fully aware of what he went through, and he's moved on, or is trying to at the very least. He does not want all the horrible things that happened to him while he was alive control and influence every decision he makes. He's not that sixteen-year-old boy trembling in a corner anymore; he does not have to bend in the face of danger and injustice. He can stand up for himself, for others, and he will because he wants to. It's not to make up for some "failure" from his life. It's who Charles wants to be.
SO! Back to the audio specifically, the use of The Wellerman song is obviously fitting since the sphere was used by sailors to "calm the seas", but also because there is something inherently haunting about that tune. It's right after he says that he's angry that he pulls the pin out; after trying so hard to hold back all his anger and pain, Charles is ready to let it loose.
The beats of the scene then follow the music. From the moment the song starts to the end of the first verse, the first "segment" of the fight happens. Charles speaks, she tries to reply, he hits her, and she reacts in that timespan. There are very faint bass notes underneath the song after he's hit her. They get louder as the song progresses, reintroducing the score of the show.
When Charles takes a second swing, it's at the start of the chorus of the song.
(The difference between verse and chorus is the starting note. Verses start low and get higher; choruses start high and stay high until the very end.)
During that chorus, Charles swings and hits her; he very nearly lines up his swings with the notes, but not quite. Then he speaks once she's backed against the wall. He lets go of the music sphere in the middle of the chorus, and completes his lines up to: "I still have a purpose!" as it ends. That's the second "segment" of the fight.
The second verse starts with him making his declaration and kicking her, and it plays out as the Night Nurse falls. The second half of the verse swells into a full score version of the song instead of just the sound of it coming from the sphere. It's the third and final "segment". Charles ends the confrontation, and once Angie disappears, the song fades out.
This sequence is such a good example of knowing when to cut the music, and how to gradually reintroduce it. It enhances the uneasiness you're meant to feel while watching Charles' anger slowly escalate. It's part of what makes the whole scene so effective.

Dale's smug little ordeal once he's arrested, which in itself feels orchestrated (loitering at the bus stop while he has a car, every note he owns crammed in cases, backpack like he's about to have a sleepover, longlegs outfit ON), stating his name and immediately asking for Lee. He knows they will inevitably be bought together. The weepy tone he uses with her that he doesn't with the prior interviewer... the single tear. You can never quite comprehend what's an act, what's an actual emotion, or if it's all so entwined it's basically negligible. Such a vessel for his religion that his attachment to Lee is undecipherable. Can a husk feel anything for anyone.? Is this an act, is it genuine? Does it matter. One million thoughts forever and ever.

npmd incorrect quotes... except they're things i've said myself. Grace: Is that a train or our lord and savior Jesus Christ? Steph: Being a bad bitch is a state of mind. Richie: It's the start of Mountain Dew, it feels so nice to drink that gamer fuel! Pete: Heads, we die. Tails, we live. Pete: Fuck, it’s heads. Ruth: As you put your spaghetti to a boil, stick your dick in some extra virgin olive oil! Pete (stand in for my brother here): You do realize you just screamed that in the middle of a supermarket checkout line, correct? Ruth: Ah, my impulsive brain strikes again. I'll just curl up and die now. Steph and Pete after the whole "LIB wants one of you to kill the other, lol!" thing: Fuck you, magic man! Any of the nerds: Do you think we could rickroll NASA? Max: If you say one more stupid thing, I'm going to rip out your vocal cords, chop them up, stir fry them, and eat them as part of my Pad Thai. Capeesh?

i will never be done defending just for once as one of the best songs ive heard from starkid so far. ive flipped through a few of the older non hatchetfield musicals and its STILL towards the top of my list. maybe its because shes ME in another world. if id switched schools earlier, or been "too gay" or "too smart" for the boys in fifth grade. if my shoulder had never healed and i had to quit dance years too early. just for once is a gorgeous, incredible representation of what it feels like to watch everything, even your own life, happen, watch it all from the outside, and never be able to take charge of it.
ruth fleming is a wonderful, weird, gross character and not enough people are cheering for her. in this essay i will

Something about in the npmd proshot hearing the actual audience cheering for Ruth while she hits those GOT DAMN HIGH NOTES OH MY GAWD <3 in Just For Once . Fucking makes me wanna sob. In universe there's obviously one to hear it but max but we know she deserves it. We know that performance warrants that praise and that reaction but Ruth doesn't. Does this make any sense. It fucking breaks me every time.
