I think Hugo saving Rutee should throw her right back in the can't-figure-out-how-I'm-feeling-about-ANYTHING zone, especially since she's been struggling with how she feels about Leon after his death.

Leon died believing that his life was super fucked because of his dad. He didn't get to find out that his dad was possessed.

Rutee would know this. And Rutee would know that Hugo has spent the past 16 years watching his son get jerked around and mistreated and threatened and be sent to his death.

And Hugo never broke through to help Leon, his son who he watched grow up.

But he did for Rutee, his daughter who he never got the chance to know.

I think there'd be some strange guilt from that. "Why me? Why not him?" and "Maybe Leon could have survived if you'd spent this effort on him instead." Maybe there'd even be some wondering if he even wanted to. Maybe it didn't matter that Leon never learned that his father was possessed, because maybe even the real Hugo didn't really care about him.

Whatever conclusion she comes to is just the one that's most comforting, because any answers died with Hugo.

(Just for the record, I do believe Hugo probably tried his best, and it was just everything compounded on top of each-other that let him give that one last push. I really can't imagine what it must have been like for him to watch everything happen at 'his own' hand, especially in continuities where Mictlan has made Leon's life a lot worse.)

And the final manga writeup!  I might comment back later if I goof with my translation app in a few sections (you all know what ones they’ll be...XD).  But here is just my initial commentary.

A warning...this involves a certain fight that I always have LOTS of opinions on.  I will most likely comment more on versions of that in another post later on, once I gather thoughts.  Buuuut there is still A TON of stuff on that.  And some stuff unique to this manga.  So...words...

1.  Rutee's entrance is more amusing than anything to Hugo.  Far cry from the actual conversations they had in the Original/Drama CDs/Other!Manga.  It seems like there's no recognition that she's connected to him...at least in the Remake when it wasn't mentioned, Rutee wasn't actually a strong part of the conversation.  It is kind of a letdown...since the whole "bodysnatcher tries to manipuate his victim's child with their familial connection" thing was very telling of Miktran.

2.  Miktran possessed Hugo is one hammy mofo by this point!  Between doing Xellos' finger wiggle, the evil laughing, the crazy excited faces.  God...he's having even more fun than he was before.  Yet still not mentioning any direct connection to Rutee.

3.  Despite the fact that Rutee claims not to care a shit about Hugo...she sure looks upset when talking to him.  Hugo's expression of shock looks genuine too.  Or confused.  Maybe she addled Miktran and Hugo got a moment to emote before he took control back...I dunno.

4.  Rutee uses water as a distraction while Stahn and Woodrow jump in.  She heals Philia, and then the water comes back around and surrounds Hugo.  This is so Philia can zap him while the water is closing in!  Of course, it doesn't work since this battle goes on for a bit more and while possessed Hugo has some sort of a healing factor, but it was an A+ idea!

5.  Stahn and Woodrow both get cut up, and Hugo aims a huge ball of energy for Rutee so she pushes Marian out of the way.  Then blocks the damn thing!!  Man is Atwight OP in this manga!

6.  Now, for the entire segment, Marian has been shutting her eyes every time something violent happens.  She's been shaking like a leaf both from the monsters and from Hugo when he's approaching or, well, doing anything.  Then, as Hugo is about to slice Rutee in two...Marian jumps in, grabs his sword arm, and when Philia's attack hits (as she was also trying to rush to save Rutee with a spell), she dislodges Berselius and runs with it!  Damn she sure grew a spine!

7.  Stahn takes that instant to slice Hugo open and end the fight...finally!  Since Miktran knows his vessel's finally toast and all.  Rutee goes to heal Stahn before Hugo starts speaking to her.

8.  So I was plugging shit into my translation app...because I wanted to know what Hugo was saying to Rutee.  Or thinking...I'm not exactly sure he was actually audible.  But before the view switches back to Marian, it seems he mentions being sorry and not wanting her to die.

9.  Marian begins feeling something from the sword.  Because Miktran has decided to up his assholishness from EVERY other version of the story combined by snatching her body next!  He even teleports her right to the Eye of Atamoni at the end of the scene between Rutee and Hugo.

10.  Rutee of course yells at Hugo, even bringing up Leon's name.  My attempts at translation seem to suggest he's telling her to go somewhere, but eh...not sure.  Only being able to input furigana in software or lookup kanji via the same software has its limitations, since I might not get what it means for two different phrases to be used together.

11.  Even though Hugo doesn't explain ANYTHING to Rutee, his concern for her life is clear enough to her.  After she yells confusingly for a tad, she does call him "father" while crying.  There's...a reason my ranking of this particular segment of the game is rated on how emotional it is.  Because this family gets so little...any bit of emotional connection, even as sad and tragic as this, is important!

12.  I think...Miktran controlling Marian is probably the creepiest thing ever!  Seriously...the evil look behind even her cute expressions...  You can tell the douchebag is milking his choice of bodies for all it's worth!  Ugh...can I just load up my ToD PSX file (as ToDR is saved at the end of Leon's Side and thus no Miktran fight) and beat on him for two hours straight...?

13.  There is a long talk about Karell and Harold, and a flash to Karell's fight with Miktran...as well as a flash of Hugo in his research room 18 years ago.  But I'm not 100% sure what's going on.  The voice speaking through Marian hasn't said directly who he is, nor do the Swordians.  Dunno if they're changing the plot THAT MUCH and it's not really Miktran but a malfunctioning Swordian (either due to injury or because Harold got pissy after Karell's death).  I don't know any of the words being used...might play with it later.  But I'll just say "Miktran" for the rest of the summary since he's the culprit in every other version.  And even if they don't know who it really is, it could still be him working through Berselius just never revealing himself...

14.  This...is a long conversation.  Yeah...I need to look deeper at it later on when I'm not watching LPs at the same time.  Faces get more and more disturbing as we go along, though.

15.  The view goes back to the hallways, and where Hugo lays, as Leon an obviously caped figure, walks through.  Kid...you're not being very ambiguous as to who you are...

16.  Marian is actually able to fight back against Miktran somewhat!  She is pleading for Stahn and everything.  It doesn't last long...aaaaand then it's back to disturbing faces!!!

17.  The look on Leon's face when he arrives...ohgod the poor boy appears so broken.  Miktran...I fucking hate you...so very much!!  And the looks he and Rutee give each other...so much emotion!!!!!

18.  Stahn gets blasted...and before Possessed!Marian can give the final blow...Leon calls up stones to help shield his friend!  It's awesome!  Although Dymlos telling Leon just exactly what's going on seems to break the poor baby more...

19.  Well...now we FINALLY get a "possessed character uses connection to another character to try and lure them to their side" with Possessed!Marian trying to sway Leon.  There's just one teeeeeensy problem...she calls him "Leon" instead of "Emilio" and right after that he snaps to yell back!

20.  Stahn tries to strike but Leon stops him because, even if she's possessed, he can't stand to see Marian hurt.  Knocks the hick on the ground and Possessed!Marian begins creeping on him again.  This time...he decides to take matters into his own hands and stabs her...RIGHT THROUGH THE FRIGGIN TORSO!!!!

21.  So after Marian drops Berselius, she's set free since she's no longer useful as a body.  Leon immediately thinks of her real self and rushes to grab her, crying...poor baby...

22.  As Miktran or whoever is in Berselius starts bitching about his "perfect plan" failing (I do know the word for plan and I looked up the other stuff), Stahn throws it right into the Eye of Atamoni!  So nobody gets revived to wreck havoc in human form.  Serves King Asshole right (I'm going down with calling it Miktran because I like finding reasons to broil on that dick).

23.  I see the word yuurei and the correct kanji is there...so lol at Rutee and Stahn calling Leon a ghost!  He yells at the boy and they all welcome him back.  Seriously!  Rutee even says "welcome home!!!"  My heart...

24.  Wait...it took Rutee this long to heal Marian?!  And she survives...HOW?!!!!!  That injury was very similar to the one Hugo had in the other manga...and now I made my self sad AGAIN!

25.  So it's Berselius being thrown into the Eye of Atamoni that causes the reaction and thus the sacrifice of the other Swordians.  Blah...blah...blah...we all know that part...although the Swordian/Master convos happen after everyone's in the Eye instead of before.  And Leon gets his own goodbye scene in something other than Destiny 2.

26.  Well...I don't know if my translation is right.  But it seems like in the end they're saying they don't think it is Berselius.  Yeah...Miktran confirmed but no one even knows it's him!  Ohgod I love it when he gets screwed over...thus some of my headcanons about his time in Hugo's body...

27.  After their escape on the Draconis, there's a short skip.  Rutee in a short skirt and a tunic shirt.  Marian in a normal blouse, vest, and skirt!  Hghhh...they're all so adorable!  I also like how Rutee has hair clips...very similar to the ones I've seen in various anime.

28.  Rutee and Stahn talk before Philia and Marian enters, and Marian gives Rutee a letter from her brother.  I didn't look too deeply into it, but the shot of him with the sack shows he's probably mentioning going on a trip.  But interestingly...he signs it "Emilio Kartret(Katrea)."  Earlier in the story, when he was alone with Hugo (or it could have been Hugo talking alone...I forgot), he uses "Emilio Gilchrist."  So he takes on their shared name after the story...and while it was probably just easier for him it's also cute to think that it's due to his and Rutee bonding.

29.  Leon's traveling cloak...oh how cute!!

There's also some illustrations at the end, but if I decide to comment on one (there's a particular one...try to guess knowing my obsessions), it'll be later since I don't have time to plug it into the translator.

Leon stands in a similar pose to Rutee when he's pretending to be a girl. I wonder if he's unconsciously emulating her body language? Like, when he thinks "how a girl moves", Rutee is who comes to mind. Or if they're just that similar. He does put his hand on his hip for that one insistent talking animation.

This is also a good comparison on some of the things I've brought up. Like how pink Leon's skin is in the remake. And also how he has less muscle definition than Rutee.

Since I’m Tales of Destiny trash. Of course I’d end up drawing this. The most awesome Tales couple. Ever.♥

Oookay, I cheated with Rutee. I just wanted to make sure they’re both here.

I went back to rewatch the cape sub event and Rutee's meltdown in Radisrol and it's interesting that in the Radisrol scene, Rutee is the one in denial and thinking Leon is still alive and Stahn is the one to very firmly say he isn't. Then in the cape scene, the cape has Stahn hoping Leon might be alive, and Rutee is the one to firmly say he isn't. I wouldn't call that a mistake, either. Grief is a very unfun rollercoaster that will even have you irrationally thinking "they're just hiding" even if you literally saw their corpse go through the cremation process.

Anyway, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to secretly keep hoping, especially since Marian very openly does, to the extent of staying at the manor to keep it ready for him. And, you know, with.. whatever it is that's going on in TOD2 (which I still do not know the details of), I think the better option narratively would be for them to keep his cape. If they were going to leave him 100% super dead, laying his cape out at sea would be better. But it's not like the choice to not take it actually meant Stahn moved on, either. In the novels, at least, he's still thinking of Leon even after Kyle is born. So basically I disagree with the cape scene as a symbol of letting go since Stahn didn't let go anyway. And also please give me sad art of either of them hugging the cape.

Gave a passing listen to a few tracks of the drama CD and oh god, Rutee yells at Leon to not call her his sister when he reveals their relation ; ; Ohhhhh the rejection.......

And then she's too out of it to help fight and just continues her BSOD all the way through the escape and openly cries. When they meet up with Mary, she cries into her arms until she's almost sick. Stahn doesn't seem to give a shit and just talks over her sobbing lmao (he doesn't seem to care about a whole lot, really.... If I ever give this a proper hard listen, I'm scared I'll dislike this Stahn.)

So, for a fic, I needed to figure out what the state of the Gilchrist estate would be after the game, in the context of "Does Marian still have a roof over her head?" And I still don't know what happens in TOD2 (and do not wish to find out before playing it), so I don't have any canon to help me on this. But unwaveringblade said TOD2 doesn't really go into detail about it either so maybe the fans have put more thought into it than the actual writers lol

So I brainstormed with a friend for like 3 hours and we came up with a bunch of different outcomes like if an odd distant family member like a cousin or in-laws could inherit it, or if Rutee could prove her relation to Hugo and claim inheritance, or if Mictlan filed a new will to disinherit everything from everyone just to be a shithead… (or if Leon could possibly still claim any inheritance if he came crawling out of the ocean after miraculously surviving all on his own)

The state could just reclaim the land to use for something else. It could end up being auctioned off. Then someone new owns the manor and they could either fire all the staff and Marian needs to figure out what she's going to do or has already been forced to move on, or they keep the staff and maybe aren't great to them and Marian's not having a good time. Or Rutee claims it. Then she either lives there and does something?? to keep it going, sells it to someone who will treat Marian well (and leave Leon's shit alone for her since the whole reason she wants to stay at the manor is to keep things ready for Leon if he rises from the dead (Proust))…. or she swings her helped-save-the-world cred around to get it turned into a state-funded orphanage, then hands the deed to Marian and says have a nice life being a forever mama bird since your last baby fell out of the nest and drowned. I was going to settle on that one!

But she'd also probably inherit Oberon and whatever family fortune there was at that point. I don't think Mictlan was running the gig with the future in mind, so he probably didn't do a whole lot of saving. Y'know, just set aside a generous emergency safety net and put the rest into bribes and I guess back into the company. And Oberon was already in the shitter by the time she'd inherit it, and she'd probably be smart enough to see it's a sinking ship, so she'd sell everything about it for as much as she could and bail, then set all that money aside as emergency funds for either the Cresta or new Darilsheid orphanages in case state funding isn't enough one year or it gets cut like she's probably used to happening.

tbh I'm going to be so disappointed if there isn't at least some political intrigue in TOD2 lol

They shoulda put her in the PS3 version.
