Friendly reminder that Lightning McQueen did NOT retire from racing in Cars 3. He only took time off to be Cruz's crew chief until her rookie season was over.

He clearly said after the final race was over, that he wanted to keep racing, since he has a choice now that Sterling is out of the picture thanks to Tex buying Rust-eze.
