Hey! I know this seems random, but I’ve been looking for people to rp vikings and I’m Norse, have you found many people? I would make a blog for a Viking character if I knew there were people out there. Let me know, thanks! - ooc.
@mcu-pep
Hope you don't mind me posting this publicly. I myself am in search of people. I even resurrected @theroleplayingedda (a masterlist of rpers) in hopes of finding people with limited success. But I did find as many active (this year, at least) blogs in my followers and in the tags that I could. So I figured I'd put this here in case others were having trouble too.
Really hope you guys do not mind me tagging you like this... If not, lemme know and I'll remove you. :)

#189 - Runaljod – Yggdrasil - Wardruna (2013)
Wardruna in Norwegian means ‘the guardian of secrets’ or ‘she who whispers’. A name worthy of this folk band that truly pays homage to its Scandinavian culture.
This is the second release from this band, and the second part in the group’s Runaljod trilogy. The band cements themselves with dark and Nordic folk music that contains quite epically inclined rhythms and tribulations that feels like a war music ensemble.
What I think really works for the band in their favor here is the use of ambiance and drone in cognation with their folk music, and I think they really excel in creating a strong atmosphere with these drones. Another thing I really like about this album is just how it feels like this group captured the past in such a way that I believe they are time travelers from the Nordic past, and quickly learned many present day customs and history that they reignited their music from the past into our present. Obviously this isn’t true, but if your music is that good at capturing a sound from way back in the past, than I think you are doing something right.
I guess my only problem is that I just feel like it is a bit too long, especially when introducing someone like myself, one who isn’t quite familiar enough with this genre of music, to this sort of music. Obviously I liked what I get here, but I felt like after IwaR my attention wavered and I started to not enjoy the album as much as it first began. Definitely not a major issue, in fact maybe when I listen to other albums from this band my mind might change, but right now I am not quite in the mood for hour long dark Nordic folk albums, maybe 30-45 minutes though.
An impressive and very poignant record that combines intricate drones with epic Nordic folk melodies. Quite the album in my humble opinion that I’ll definitely look more into as time goes by.
4.5/5

Nauðr
“Consciousness is the Necessity.”
This photograph is from the local woods in my hometown, quite near where I live. The branches are of a fallen Pine wood which I clumsily arranged to form the rune. I took this quite recently actually (in late August of 2019).
Nauthiz (often spelled "Naudiz" or "Naud") is a complex rune. It means and it represents need, necessity, constraint, friction. It is connected to the Norns - Urð, Verðandi and Skuld.
“That which does not destroy me makes me stronger.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche
Key Concepts: Need, resistance, constraint, conflict, drama, effort, necessity, urgency, hard work, need-fire, life lessons, creative friction, distress, force of growth, the consequence of past action, short term pain for long term gain. The ninth rune is the "need" rune. Nauðr denotes "need", and above all "necessity". It is the rune of fate and is connected to the three Norns who are weaving the web of destiny. Nauðr is also the rune of magic and initiation. Magic is the ability to influence destiny, a knowledge that sometimes not even the gods and goddesses possess. Not even the deities can influence the decisions of the Norns. Destiny is the thread of life that man has given. Skuld, the youngest of the Norns, is veiled since she represents the future. She cuts the thread when the time comes for a person to die. Destiny is connected to time and death. The magical initiation is the path to control destiniy and to enter the deepest levels of the realms of death. Óðinn hangs nine nights on the Yggdrasill tree, deeply wounded by a spear in order to be initiated in the mysteries of the runes (ie. to know the secrets of the underworld). The realm of death consists of nine worlds. The distance is nine days by horse, as we know from Hermóðr's journey to bring back Baldr and thus change destiny. Nauðr is the ninth rune in the Uthark. (notice that we are dealing with a different runic system from the well known and widely spread Futhark). The fact that the number nine is connected to Nauðr is revealed on the Sigtuna-amulet where it is written: "Have nine necessities, wolf". The connection between the Norns and the number nine, is reflected in the late Edda poem "The Sun-Song" where it is told: "On the chair of the Norns, for nine days I sat". In Nordic magic in spirituality, the number nine is recurrent. The Icelandic books of magic and of the "black arts" (Galdrabók, Galdrakver, Galdrablóð, etc.), instruct and show us how to carve nine Nauðr runes, thus revealing the connection between the number nine and this rune. Nine is 3x3 and is thus a higher aspect of the magical power of the trinity. The three witches in Macbeth (that might have been very much inspired by the Norns), chant: "Thrice to thine and thrice to mine, and thrice again to make up nine". Nine is not just destiny and necessity, but also the possibility to influence fate. Nauðr is time, destiny, necessity and death, and thus also rebirth. The Nauðr rune is connected to the nine months in child birth and the pains involved are an initiation into a new reality. In Nordic spirituality death and life are intimately connected. Certain aspects of the initiatoric meanings of the Nauðr rune continue in the eighteenth rune.
The Norwegian Rune Poem
ᚾ Nauðr gerer næppa koste;
nøktan kælr í froste.
ᚾ Naudhr
Constraint gives scant choice;
a naked man is chilled by the frost.

Wardruna for the band ask 😊
Hi ! Thanks for the ask ! 😘😄
So...
favourite song: Helvegen (closely followed by Andvevarljod and Odal)
least favourite song: Maybe Vindalva ? There are no song I really don't like from them but I don't listen to it very often ?
have i ever seen them live: Yes, in Nantes at the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany. It was magical. I hope I'll be able to see them in Paris next year (but I don't even know in which city I'll live next year sooo...). I also saw the Flight of the White Raven virtual show ! But I am a grumpy old lady and I don't consider it as much as "the real deal" even if I was delighted to see it.
favourite band member: I have a soft spot for singers with a voice such as hers so Lindy Fay Hella.
least favourite band member: X
how many of their albums i have: Two albums as of now : Runaljod - Yggdrasil and Runaljod - Ragnarok
favourite album: Runaljod – Yggdrasil
favorite lyrics: Obviously, I don't speak old norse but the following lines of Helvegen alway send chills down my spine
“Du blir laust frå banda som bind deg
Du er løyst frå banda som batt deg”
The translation I found was
“You will be free from the bonds that bind you,
You are free from the bonds that bound you”
But if someone has another one or a better one I’ll gladly learn it !
favorite music video: Voluspá
ever met any members: Never ! Most of the times, I am not really into meeting band members (usually, my shy/socially inapt/dumb ass flees faaaar away when friends talk about going to signing sessions and similar stuff because I know I'll make a fool of myself)

Meanwhile, the recording sessions for the band’s new album, Kvitravn (White Raven), took place in forests and on burial mounds.
“You can almost call it method-recording or method-composing, where I’m the instrument and the themes are the composer,” says the frontman, who describes himself as animistic – a believer that all objects and living things possess their own spiritual essence. “It subtly promotes this idea that nature is something sacred. Something we are a part of, not the rulers of.”
His band’s music is getting ever more popular. The music press started waking up in 2013 with the arrival of Runaljod: Yggdrasil (named after a sacred tree), while Kvitravn reached the UK Top 50 earlier this month. But Wardruna already had a strong following, having ignited a fascination with Norse culture in 2013, when they sold out London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in their first ever UK show.

hello! ive been trying to branch out in what i listen to because honestly i dont really listen to music that often and dont often find myself with that many opinions on what i do end up listening to but god vermilia is so good..... do you happen to have any other recs similar to her? in any case, thank you for introducing me :)
aw anon!!!! i’m so happy you liked her (and also that you’re branching out, it’s always fun to try new things). i can’t say i have anything exactly like her (the thing i love about her is that her music is epic but also feels.... cozy somehow) but i’ll try to recommend a few things in various categories that you might be interested in (and of that i have MANY because this general genre is my bread and butter).
i think all of these are on spotify, if not, they should be available on bandcamp.
vvilderness, dark waters - atmospheric, epic black metal with haunting female vocals in the first song and some lovely traditional székely instrumentation and melody woven in. this is a gorgeous, emotive album.
heilung, futha - this isn’t black metal exactly but it is pagan folk/metal adjacent with female vocals; it has a very epic feel at times.
wardruna, runaljod - yggdrasil - this is another pagan metal band that you might enjoy. very atmopsheric (in that it feels like being in a forest in viking times).
afsky, ofte jeg drømmer mig død - this isn’t really pagan or female vocals but it’s one of my favorite albums of the year and it’s beautiful. depressive black metal titled after romantic poems. if you listen to one song listen to tyende sang.
marrasmieli, between land and sky - another finnish atmospheric black metal band. it’s male vocals but it has a similar feel.
havukruunu, uinuos syömein sota - finnish pagan black metal and probably my album of the year. it makes me want to bash heads in with an axe (in a good way).
feminazgûl, no dawn for men - this is an all-female band (although there are no clean vocals like vermilia has) which is a little unorthodox in its instrumentation but it’s unique and raw and unafraid to try new things and i cannot recommend it enough.
also throwing in a recommendation for liminal shroud, through the false narrows which is only really related to vermilia in that it’s black metal but i LOVE this band and think they deserve more attention.
i hope you find something else that you like! if you ever want more music recommendations feel free to ask. <3
