summary ... it only started with [name] taking in two strays when they were driving home from work, it was pouring and the two poor strays were soaked! you couldn't leave them… so you took them in

warnings ... fluff, fluff, fluff, and more fluff, just a smidge of angst, uhh takemichi and hinata get names!

it's been exactly four days since you rescued the two stray cats from the pouring rain

they've made themselves pretty comfortable in your apartment. you made sure to give them a warm bath and take them to the vet the next day

it seemed you had two lover cats, one boy, and one girl

they were adorable! curly up next to each other, licking each other clean, and chasing each other around. they didn't give you much trouble either! they were just curious about what you like to do and follow you around your apartment

you were even blessed with one of them sleeping in your lap while you were working on your laptop, spoiler alert you didn't move and you were starving the entire hour..

but finally, it was time to name them, you have just been calling them 'hey you' or 'kitty'

you didn't want to get attached too quickly

but now they were part of the family! so it was naming time

right now you were sitting on your couch and the two muchkins were on your coffee table looking all cute and cuddly

you first looked at the yellowy-orange cat with stripes, you pointed at him

"your name is.... take' !" you said and the cat meowed while tilting his head to the side

you then focused on the brownish-pinkish cat, "and you are gonna be.. peachy!"

peachy meowed too and then hopped over to your lap and rubbed against your arm

you cooed at her actions and take' came over to nip at you for stealing his wife's attention from him and you giggled

"she's all yours buddy!" you gave a small laugh

you pulled out your phone from your pocket to check the time, "ahh.. gotta get ready!" you stood up and placed peachy next to take'

you stretched out your back and lifted your arms above your head-your shirt lifts up with your stretch- you started to walk towards your room and your cuties follow you, meowing all the way

opening your room door, peachy and take' quickly run inside and hop on your bed-peachy was making biscuits and take' was resting beside her

you pulled out your work clothes, it was a light blue shirt with the pet shops logo on the front and a pair of black pants

you pulled your home shirt off your body, and as you were pulling on your work clothes you heard a low hiss and a high squeak 'meow!'

looking over you saw peachy-who no longer was making biscuits-wack take' on the head and run away with take' following her

you giggled at their small fight "yeeeaah someone is gonna be sleeping on the couch tonight"

you walked up and down the isles of the pet shop, you were re-stocking some of the pet food and toys

humming a little tune and bopping your head to the soft music that was playing in the shop

"[name]! can you take out the leftover dog food?" one of your co-workers-yala-yelled from the other side of the pet shop

"sure!" you yelled back

you walked to the back of the store and into one of the storage rooms and collected the trash bag with the old dog food inside

when you opened the door that led out to an ally way with garbage dumps

you froze

there were tons of cats.. and a couple of dogs

all of the strays turned to look at you, many of them gave you- mean looks?

yeah, they didn't seem happy to see you, one of the cats looked high.. it had a blond patch of fur on its head but the rest of its fur was black... and it had a pricing? ok that's enough

you gave an awkward smile and just put the bag next to the stairs, you were gonna take the trash out later...

then you noticed a big black cat on top of a smaller cat beating the absolute shit out of it, poor thing, you wanted to help the smaller cat but a hiss made you rethink your decision. whatever those cats were doing wasn't your problem...

where you scared? psshhh.. no..

before you shut the door you heard a loud hiss and that made you shut the door quicker

god knows if you'll be next like that smaller cat.. cats can be pretty mean

you blew out a breath and made it back into the shop, you whined to your co-worker about the mean scary cats outside

it's been days since your encounter with the... gang of cats?

you were in your brother's neighborhood riding on a motorcycle-yes you had one, well more like it was your brothers- you stopped by a car dump because you noticed a large population of cats and a small number of dogs leaving the car dump area

"what the?.."

you remembered the people who talked about cats who would 'fight' in the car dump, they even had names for each gang of cats, but you don't remember any of the names

hoping off your bike you made your way to the entrance of the car dump, and that's where you heard it

a loud but sad cry of a cat

you sped up your walk-avoiding stepping on any of the cats that made their way out-you saw the exact same cat from days ago, the one that was getting beaten up, it was leaning over the bigger cat and crying into its fur

"holy crap!" you yelled, this got the attention of the other strays in the area

"holy crap!" a foreign voice yelled out

chifuyu looked up and saw a woman standing there, a shocked expression on her their

"chifuyu...whos that?..." baji coughed out, chifuyu snapped his head towards baji "don't worry! I won't let them hurt you!"

but he didn't notice how the person already made their way quickly over to them

"chifuyu!"

"look out!"

"baji!!"

"hey!"

before chifuyu could do anything the person carefully grabbed baji and ran off and out of the garbage dump

"baji!" yelled out chifuyu, no no! he couldn't lose him too! he lost takemichi, he couldn't lose baji!

chifuyu ran after the catnapper but he was too late the catnapper was already on their bike and driving off, he raced after the bike but he wasn't fast enough and lost sight of the motorcycle

"baji!!!" chifuyu screamed, he then tripped over his own paws and fell face-first into the ground, he sobbed quietly, he put his paws over his face to hide his shame

"chifuyu?" mikey said, chifuyu didn't move

"chifuyu!" draken yelled, this got chifuyu to sit up but hang his head low

"baji is gonna be alright.. whoever that was, is trying to help" mitsuya uttered, chifuyu didn't answer

they didn't know that the catnapper was going to be a very dear friend in the future

Jane was late, and the hour was already very late. Maura was a little nervous about being at a bar alone, but even as she fidgeted another woman approached her, taking in her outfit with the kind of admiration it truly deserved.

"What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" she asked coquettishly, and Maura chuckled.

"I could ask the same of you," Maura demurred. The other woman's outfit was stylish, classic and fashionable. She was tall and gorgeous, a soft smile and strong cheekbones. The dress for her perfectly; it was a Verger which Maura had regretfully decided not to purchase since she wasn't the right height to do it justice. It looked perfect on her. Maura looked her over with approval.

"Doctor Paula Rubenstein," the other woman introduced herself. Maura took the offered hand, realising she'd been looking too long, but Paula merely looked amused.

"Doctor Maura Isles," she countered, seeing the other woman's eyebrows raise.

"I thought you looked familiar."

"Have we met before?" Maura asked, worrying that she'd accidentally snubbed someone she'd already met.

"Trust me, I'd have remembered." Her voice was low and husky, but not as deep as Jane's. The hand that remained in hers was warm and friendly, and there was a pleasant thumb running over her knuckles. "No, I mean from the news. There was that serial killer." She shuddered. "You must be very brave to do that kind of work."

"She doesn't need to be brave, she has me," Jane snarled from somewhere over Maura's shoulders. Maura leaned back a little and felt the reassuring press of Jane's chest against her back, Jane's hand finding her waist and pulling Maura back into the safety of Jane's arms.

"Ah, Detective Rizzoli. Who could forget." Paula released Maura's hand and offered her own to Jane, who eyed it like she'd been offered a fish left in the sun for days.

"We've met?" Jane eyed the other woman warily, and Maura was confused by Jane's hostility to someone she didn't even know. Jane's gaze was focused on Paula's face, and the warmth of Jane against Maura's back almost made her forget to care how rude Jane was being.

"Briefly. You arrested one of my patients."

"One of your patients killed a bunch of people," Jane countered, and Maura was confused as well as dismayed. She'd been getting along so well with another woman, which was rare for her. Why was Jane acting like this?

"Perhaps I'll see you later," Paula said, directing that only to Maura, returning the rudeness Jane had offered. The event started and Jane sighed near Maura's ear.

Maura wanted to ask what was wrong, but the fundraiser had started so she just leaned against Jane, enjoying the solid warmth of her.

Jane ducked out to the washroom after the speeches were over and Paula came over, full of compliments and approving eyes over Maura's outfit. Maura had chosen to wear the Yalas she'd had for a while because Jane liked Maura in that shade of green, and she'd worn kitten heels in the same shade with a purse to match.

"Would you like to come home with me?" Paula asked with a smirk when Jane came back, and Maura smiled pleasantly at her.

"Oh! No, thank you. I have a perfectly good home of my own."

Having understood completely, Maura beamed at Paula until she finally walked away, looking eminently confused

"Maura, she was flirting with you," Jane groaned.

"Oh really? Oh. She wanted to take me home with her for sex? Sex with me? Of course. Do you think she's gone far?"

"She's gone too far," Jane snarled. When Maura peered at the doorway Jane growled and held her. "Besides, you're coming home with me."

"For sex?" Maura asked hopefully, enjoying the frustrated little whine Jane gave her.

"No, for - ugh, Maura. For... you know. A beer. Walk the dog. Dinner, since they're only handing out candy corn."

"It's for a good cause," Maura said with a straight face. "Okay, take me home with you, even though I have a perfectly good home of my own."

She saw Jane roll her eyes, but she also saw Jane blush, and she chuckled lowly to herself.

There's a huge bull elephant in Sri Lanka who holds up vehicles on a road running through Yala National Park. He's called Raja and you have to pay him a toll/bribe (like a bunch of bananas, a melon, or a loaf of bread) to get by. Other elephants in the area are learning to copy him. I for one applaud this development and hope more elephants will become highwaymen.

Mid-Year Book Freak-out Tag 2024

Another year, another Mid-Year Book Freak-out Tag! I believe this set of questions originated on booktube, but I see it circulate around all social media. I usually do this set of questions every year. Feel free to copy/paste the questions if you're interested!

I try to only answer 1 book per question (but sometimes I can't decide) and I try to only talk about a book once throughout the set of questions too, so I'm not too repetitive, but it doesn't always happen!

1.Best Book so far in 2024: I'm going to have to say Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I read this on audio back in January, and it's stuck with me since. I bought a physical copy and have been reading & marking up the book over the past few weeks. I'm not a religious person, but this book could be my bible lol.

A close runner up is North Woods by Daniel Mason, and the Beartown series by Fredrik Backman.

2.Best Sequel you've read so far in 2024: Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett. This series is just so fun and exactly the type of book I like to read.

3.New Release you haven't read yet, but want to: Goddess of the River by Vaishnavi Patel. I really enjoyed her debut, Kaikeyi and she's an author on my radar now. I'm also interested in Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland.

4.Anticipated Release for the second half of the year: The new T.Kingfisher book, A Sorceress Come to Call in August, as well as A Dark and Drowning Tide by Alison Saft later in the fall.

5.Biggest Disappointment: The Atlas Complex, the third and final book to the Altas series by Olivie Blake. This was a big disappointment and let-down :(

I also found Song of the Huntress and A Winter's Promise to be disappointments this year. Both were books I was anticipating liking a lot, but was let down.

6.Biggest Surprise: The Throne of the Five Winds / Hostage of Empire trilogy by SC Emmett. This became a new favorite fantasy series, and I went into the first book without much of an expectation, but was surprised by how much I liked it.

7.Favorite New Author: I did not read many new (new to me, or debut) authors this year so far, but I did enjoy reading the Greenhollow Duology by Emily Tesh. So I would say Emily Tesh is a new favorite.

8.Newest Fictional Crush: usually I struggle with this question, but this year was easy 😂. It's easily Zakkar Kai from The Throne of the Five Winds without no doubt. Takshin from the same series is also a contender!

9.Newest Favorite Character: Komor Yala from The Throne of the Five Winds, she was such a great main character, and had such a quiet strength and intelligence that made her an instant favorite.

10.Book that made you cry: The Wall by Marlen Haushofer had me crying by the last page. I might not make everyone cry, but it certainly made me emotional.

11.Book that made you happy: A Fragile Enchantment by Alison Saft was one of the first books I read this year, but it was so delightful and had me smiling throughout. I read it in a day and couldn't put it down.

12.Most Beautiful Book you've bought/acquired this year: The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape by Katie Holton is such an artistic and unique book.

13.Book you need to read by the end of the year: I've been meaning to do a re-read of the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon for a few years now, maybe I'll get to it this year

Solarpunk Project - Nusa Stiglitz

Sri Lanka contains several diverse natural resources to draw from. Apart from the main ones that are used in this world (tropical climate, windy coasts, lakes and rivers), there are other smaller ones that are put to use in various other fields. They are as follows;

Mineral Resources

Sri Lanka is home to several materials of the earth, such as limestone, graphite, mineral sands, gems, and phosphate.

Limestone is used in construction (in concrete) and in agriculture (to balance the pH levels in soil). It is used in a similar fashion as in Roman construction, which makes buildings and statues far more durable and in the long run, is better for the environment.

Graphite is used in writing materials, lubricants (like grease), in the electrical industry and to create graphene sheets, which are several times more durable than steel, and far more lightweight (used in the construction of certain technologies and equipment). The use of natural graphite in particular is more popular in Sri Lanka as it produces very little carbon emissions in comparison to the production of synthetic graphite.

Mineral sands are smaller ore deposits in the form of particles. Sri Lanka is well-endowed with industrial minerals including Graphite, Ilmenite, Rutile, Zircon, Quartz, Feldspar, Clay, Kaolin, Apatite, (Phosphate Rock), Silica Sand, Garnet sand, Mica, Calcite and Dolomite. Several mineral-sand deposits of Monazite, Zircon, Garnet and Ilmenite in particular are found in various parts of the island, and are now being exported. These are used in creating the wind turbine magnets that power part of the coasts of the island, and in medical, manufactured and electronic products such as fibre optics, and rechargeable batteries. Additionally, it is also used in materials such as inks, paints and sunscreen.

There exist a variety of gems that can be mined from Sri Lanka. Especially notable are blue sapphire, pink sapphire or ruby, and yellow sapphire; alexandrite and cat's-eye chrysoberyl; and almandine and hessonite garnet. These in particular resulted in a booming jewellery industry that formed in the country that often exports to other parts of the world.

Finally, phosphate is used to create phosphorous, which is itself used in fertiliser. It can also be used to create phosphorous acid, which has several applications as an agent in food, cosmetics, electronics and animal feed.

Agricultural Resources

The main agricultural export of Sri Lanka is tea, however the country also exports rubber, coconuts, rice, and spices. It was because of these resources that colonisers were drawn to this country, which also had the ideal conditions to grow them in. Ancient Sri Lankans also indulged in the practice of Chena cultivation, which was used to cultivate vegetables, greens, grains and cereals. Agriculture also heavily depended on the monsoonal seasons (Maha and Yala), and certain crops are relegated to only certain parts of the country (for example, tea is only grown in the central highlands of the country).

The nature of the Sri Lankan diet is such that most if not all compounds of a balanced meal can be locally sourced and grown in one's own garden. This led some Sri Lankans to pursue a meat-free lifestyle, although a more proper term would be to call it a minimum-meat lifestyle.

Live meat is found in the forms of cow, chicken, pig, and goat meat. Pork is slightly less common than the other two, as the demand for it is less. In addition to this, certain commodities are harvested from these animals, such as milk and eggs. Eggs in particular may come from a variety of animals, ranging from the aforementioned chicken to quail to duck. Sri Lanka also thrives on a strong fishing culture, with many fishing villages lining the coasts of the countries. However, villagers are careful not to harm crucial elements of the environment in the process (such as mangroves). Thus, more traditional means of fishing are employed. Some marine life that are often caught are crab, prawn, shark, and both large and smaller species of fish.

In addition to consumables, cotton is also grown in Sri Lanka, which is used to make a majority of the fabric seen in the country. Raw fabric is produced by "spinning" the cotton and "weaving" it once it has turned into threads.

As a result of all these boons, Sri Lanka seldom ever imports these products into the country, only ever resorting to during off-seasons for agricultural resources. This has led to a self-sustained growing economy that does not rely on international trade to benefit.

prompt 24: red skies at morning

The moon is red.

The moon is red, and Menphina’s hound is growling.

And the Puk tribe of Thanalan, they of the rock-cut tombs and the aldgoat herds and the long memories, can do nothing. Mothers clutch their children close. Aldgoats’ milk runs dry. Cheese spoils before its time. There are voidsent sightings in Drybone, mass goobbue migrations towards Ul’dah, rumblings that the Garlean Empire is truly preparing for another war. Amidst all this, how is Q’yala Terret supposed to concentrate on her own duties?

But she is a priestess of Azeyma, and the sun does not stop rising because the moon is filled with blood. So she rises with it, singing as she goes. At noon, she dances, flinging dried flower petals in the air with each swirl of her skirt. In the evening, she is the first to light the braziers. Her aunt, the current head priestess, narrows her eyes in that way that lets her know she’s being overzealous, but she doesn’t care. She has a duty. And she will perform it, because—

Because the alternative is to still be awake when the moons rise. First silver, and then red red red—

Red as her aunt’s eyes. Red as the fire flickering in the braziers.

The red moon is getting closer.

It falls.

Dalamud cracks open like an egg, shards raining down on the defenseless land below. By some miracle, their tribe is spared, but their southern herding grounds are simply...gone. Only twisted loops of violently orange crystals remain. She hears that Louisoix Leveilleur and his organization are the only reason it isn’t worse, that the dragon-god Bahamut would otherwise have destroyed them all. She believes it.

Her tribe is divided on the question. Her father thinks they’ve done all they could, and they should simply thank Azeyma their tribe was spared. Her uncle Tenbe thinks the Garleans were somehow in league with the Amal’jaa—none of them have seen Bahamut, after all, and who else summons primals except beasts? Her mother keeps her mouth shut, and nobody knows what she thinks.

“It is done, Yalila,” she murmurs as she helps Yala brush out her long red hair, the same way she did when Yala was very small. “There is no use assigning blame. We are alive, are we not? And so the goats must be milked regardless.”

She finds she is not much interested in milking goats anymore. Neither, it seems, are most of the rest of the tribe. Tempers flare brighter than the sun, each of them rocked by the wake of the Calamity and seeking to cling to what they can control. Knowing what’s going on doesn’t make it harder to swallow, especially when her sisters and little mothers and aunts are all at each other’s throats and she can do nothing.

Well. She can do something. She can leave. If there’s one less position to fight over, one less point of friction, maybe things will be better. And they get a lot of news, here so close to Camp Drybone and the church. The Scions are wanting someone to deal with the beast tribes. She can do that. She can do that well.

And so, six months after the Calamity, Q’yala Terret arrives in the Waking Sands.

currently wondering why jelco wears a different variation of the standard company insignia than everyone else.

under the cut because the images made the post long.

as this season two analysis points out, the company uses the same logo throughout season one. it appears the same on all officer, personnel and guard uniforms. it is a four pointed star inside of a diamond shape.

this version of the logo appears as normal on some uniforms we see in season two. i took pictures of hills' uniform, which looks the same as in season one (left), and the uniform johnny wears in heart shaped box to break into spring hill (right).

based on the differences between the uniform johnny is wearing and hills' uniform, i don't think johnny's is an officer uniform, just one worn by regular company personnel. it lacks the lapel pins that hills and jelco have on theirs which, according to the analysis, is probably an indication of rank. hills wears two and jelco wears three, suggesting jelco ranks above hills.

jelco's variation of the company's symbol retains the same basic shape, but is altered to look more like a stylized bird with the edges of the bottom two points folded in.

now you might be thinking, this could be a purely aesthetic change. but some (not all) of jelco's guards wear this same version of the symbol, and it also appears in other places like the monitor in his office. places where you'd think they would use the standard version, since it's more common and appears to represent the company in general.

a company guard in season five's run, yala, run also wears the same variant, seen here. it's hard to see, but it has the same darker / folded in corners.

by this point the company hasn't really been relevant to events, so this can just be excused as the designers re-using the same costumes and not bothering to get versions that use the standard logo. but the fact that it appeared first alongside the standard one makes me wonder if it was supposed to mean something specific at first and it was just never elaborated on. symbols in this show tend to have meaning if they appear repeatedly.

or that's just me giving them too much credit. wouldn't be the first time lol.
