So, at one point I did watch the movie. (My college had a thing where you could watch certain movies for free on an official website if you were a student) Originally to hate watch but I did in the end kinda enjoy it. Was Misto less sassy...yes. was Bustopher gross...yes. But! I loved Cassandra. For the Musical Tugger is my favorite, but Cassandra is my favorite in the movie. When she eventually got cat nipped I felt so bad for her. I also like to think that her and Demeter are together since they're always close to each other. And I also headcannon that Deut adopted both Cassandra and Munkustrap. I also have this whole theory about Cassandra, Grizabella, the windmill girls and Macavity 's girls.

My theory is pretty much based on a poster of the windmill girls. Since Cassandra shows so much hostility, I thought that her and Grizabella were close...until something happened. Looking at Macavity's girls, they kinda look like Cassandra. The windmill girl poster has a moon and 4(can't remember on the top of my head) girls dancing. The moon represents Grizabella while the girls dancing were Cassandra's sisters. Because of what Grizabella (and probably Bombularina too) did, Cassandra lost her family and now has issues with trust. How can she be sure Victoria won't betray them like Grizabella? What is she loses her family once again? It's why she is so fierce and protective. It's why she didn't necessarily attack Bomba when Macavity's girls started to circle her. They're still her sisters and she doesn't want to hurt them.

So I may or may not be currently hyperfixating on Cats after finally seeing it live (fantastic production btw the 2022-23 cast is so good) and looking back on the Boschian nightmare that is the 2019 film, you know what the worst thing they did was? And I mean the WORST thing. It wasn’t turning sweet & matronly Jennyanydots into Rebel Wilson scissoring the camera. It wasn’t shoving poor Victoria into the role of protagonist in a musical that’s designed not to have a protagonist. It wasn’t the horrific MoCap suits (but I do still feel so bad for the VFX team that got thrown under the bus). It wasn’t even James Corden existing. I will go to my grave insisting that the movie’s greatest sin was, in fact, the straightwashing. Tom Hooper took my beautiful boys-

And hit them with the hetero ray. How fucking dare he. The movie’s understanding of Tugger is so goddamn surface level it makes my head spin. Their version of him is a flirt and nothing else, and that isn’t actually the case in the musical. Like, for all his strutting and, ahem, gyrating, that Rum Tum Tugger isn’t actually all that interested in the girl cats who fawn over him is made pretty clear in his big number. But who DOES he show an interest in, in just about every version of the stage show?

The movie adds insult to injury by still giving the “Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore” line to Mistoffelees, but then changing the context to make it no homo. Rather than Misto playfully teasing Tugger, he’s now acting jealous & trying to dissuade Victoria from taking an interest in Tugger. Because the film is so committed to convincing us that this guy is straight-

that they wrote up a romantic arc for him out of whole cloth WITH HIS SISTER GUYS THEY WERE SO AFRAID OF GAY CATS THEY PAIRED HIM OFF WITH HIS SISTER. I know the film versions of their characters aren’t related (probably because Hooper & co didn’t know they were canonically siblings because they didn’t do their homework because they didn’t care they just wanted that awards bait)- but still what the actual fuck? No gays allowed but you can kiss your sibling. Truly a movie for Alabamans.

Mister Mistoffelees/Rum Tum Tugger (Cats)

I'm just going to say it: having Munkustrap sing Mister Mistoffelees' song in the movie instead of Rum Tum Tugger was homophobic. Definitely the worst crime that film committed.

Oh, the agony of the little brother, living in the shadow of your older siblings, feeling like you have to live according to other people's expectations. Sometimes you just need to break out, buy your father's company, force your twin to acknowledge that he has a crush on the same person as his hero, and prove that your friends mom didn't really die in France. All in a day's work!

I’m so deeply upset by how much Cats (2019) messed up the characterisation and performance of the characters and the show itself.

Cats is one of my favourite shows of all time, and a massive part of that comes from the overwhelming whimsy and playfulness of the entire thing. The movie took such a magical, dreamy show and turned it into a corporate nightmare.

Rebel Wilson and James Corden are some of the worst casting choices I have ever seen in a movie adaptation. Playing such genuine roles for gags took all the life and respect from them.

I have many many more things to say but to keep it brief, they have sucked the life, joy, and whimsical fun out of a show built purely on those three concepts.
