Dreaming of escaping to la dolce vita. What I wouldn't give to hop on a plane and disappear into the Tuscan countryside for a few months. Wander quiet cobblestone streets, sip cappuccinos in piazzas, and watch the sunset over ancient ruins. No agenda, no responsibilities - just me and the beauty of Italy. Forget everything for a while and get lost in another world. Maybe we could explore it together? Two wandering spirits embracing the freedom of no plans. We’d split a bottle of chianti over long lazy meals, dance at local village festivals, and make unforgettable memories. Let’s leave it all behind for a while and escape to where the heart is always full and the only schedule is indulging the senses. A presto, bella Italia!

FAR, FAR AWAY
Years ago I met a man who told me he was from Côte d'Ivoire and those words, uttered on a frigid Sunday morning on a street corner in midtown, conjured up a fantasy of Africa, a romance of the continent, almost entirely uninformed, that remains with me.
The words Angkor Wat do the same.
I know little about the twelfth-century temple complex in Cambodia. I've seen grainy nineteenth-century photographs and talked with architects who've visited. I remember the gorgeous footage from In the Mood for Love, in which Hong Kong film start Tony Leung wanders the grounds alone, in silence, running his hands along the stone, summoning a long-ago heartbreak that will shadow his entire life. The place obliges. It's sensual and severe, ancient and embracing, with chambers and corners in which to hide.
A smart video from the Worlds Monuments Fund goes a way to dismiss the romanticism. Drone footage highlights the vastness of the site and its lush watery surrounds. The camera lingers over piles of giant stone blocks, which are being reset after structural reinforcing and waterproofing work is completed. There's a discussion of the enormous fig tree whose roots straddle the roof at Ta Prohm like tentacles, with the promise that both structure and tree will be preserved. There are interviews with engineers and artisans carrying out the restoration work, which seems terribly pragmatic.
Then there's a pan shot of Churning of the Ocean of Milk, the iconic bas relief depicting that episode in Hindu mythology, with phalanxes of demons and angels stirring up the elixir of everlasting life, amrita. Right then the dream of Angkor Wat re-emerges. We see these creatures carved, life-size (that is, at the size of human adults), compressed in dramatic repetition, rendered richly within an inch of the surface of stone, a work of delirious craft and precision. What men carved these stones, through how many years, and what thoughts, what songs, were with them as they worked?
Longing for a place requires knowing something about it while at the same time knowing nothing. Can one understand a place correctly and remain enchanted by it? I want to see Angkor Wat and also hold onto my fantasy of that place.

The historic Quincy Smelter in Hancock Michigan near Lake Superior. This is a diptych, because I am traveling with only small panels. I wanted a more panoramic composition and thought myself very clever to clip these boards together! 😇💥
Affiliated with the Keweenaw National Historical Park, mined copper was processed here. The worlds largest copper strike happened in this area and around the early 1900s this area was an economic powerhouse. Also significant in Union history.
10 x 18,” or 25 x 45 cm., oil on board.

AFTER-SHOCK
I thought I had seen everything and then I saw photos of Casa Portuale, a facility for Naples dockworkers designed by Aldo Rossi between 1968 and 1980. The immense poured concrete structure is ungainly, even by Brutalist standards, without a governing center, image, or profile. More surprisingly, it lacks the pictorial and narrative charm one associates with Rossi's iconic postmodern work. Even its drawings seem muddled.
Nonetheless it possesses an incrededible, animalistic charisma. Abandoned for decades, left open to air and rain, it's in bad shape today. Photos of the interior show bare concrete ceiling slabs, crumbling linoleum floor tile, dulled aluminum frame ribbon windows, distressed vertical blinds, toppled schoolroom chairs, and carefully framed views of the sea that hold it at a distance. But the building's appeal is something different from ruin porn -- the romance of nature overtaking the man-made. There are in Casa's massing, structure and planning complexities that approach absurdities, and this gives it a kind of battered anti-modern heroism.
The Casa fills a slender lot parallel to the water, between a low warehouse and train tracks. The entire ground floor is given over to parking. Above it hovers, on massive pilotis, a flat one-storey slab. Through this rises, from one end, a giant saucer enclosing a grand events room. Growing from it is a fifteen-story block from which smaller rooms burst through. The building reminds one of a parking garage, a spaceship, and a cruise ship, all lit up with a touch of the kooky expressionism Frank Lloyd Wright exercised in the 1950's. What other building looks like this?
At a moment when high-profile architecture projects are mostly taken over by branding, value-engineering and parametrics, Casa Portuale provokes. This gorgeous old beast asserts itself; it has the kind of authority that ancient buildings possess.
