I'm not so keen on Pillars Of Eternity getting a turn-based mode; I've learned from experience that real-time and turn-based have for more tactical implications than one might initially expect. A lot changes based on whether or not your opponents can move while you do, and that impacts the balance and utility of dozens of different abilities. I distinctly remember that in Pathfinder: Kingmaker, area of effect spells were incredibly difficult to target in real-time.
(Since it's obviously optional, though, I'm not lamenting anything other than the loss of some of Obsidian's time.)

For the longest time I disliked Final Fantasy XII for utilizing real-time w/ pause combat, but just trying it again it occurred to me that I can just... turn off the pause, and now the game is way more fun.
Really my only objection to RTwP is when they're so complex that they necessitate a pause, and are usually systems that aren't meant to be real-time (TTRPGs...). When it's an original system that you can follow without pausing, it's a good time.

crazy statement though. pillars and bg3 do Not play alike. play pillars because it's better written and has an actually interesting setting lol
#does pillars owe a huge mechanical debt to d&d yeah nobody's hiding that.#pillars is rtwp and bg3 is turn based . for starters.

i'm in act2 of da2 and i just want to break sister bethany out of the gallows ;_; 🙏 it feels rly weird leaving her there, i know if my (irl lol) little brother were in some kind of institutional not-prison-but-basically-prison i would be focusing on that, not my business dealings lol!! 😭😞
#well im headcanoning that celerie is just too heartbroken to bear thinking of bethany so she's been avoiding the gallows altogether#but maybe i should go there lol :'D see if anything kicks off?#im assuming smth *does* happen tho bc of varric's flashforward interrogation...?#ahhh im so invested i rly love this game :'D#its a nice mix of my fav parts of origins and veilguard!!#combat is RTwP which allows more control/variety over strat (origins) but is fastpaced and not too sloggy (vg)#dialogue is 3rd person and conversational (vg) instead of loredumpy (origins)#im glad i can click on companions while exploring even if they dont say anything:'D#its a little weird running around w mute/noninteractive companions in vg haha#chelle.txt#da2: celerie#i think there's other things but i like that the characters in this game are funny 😆#my bestie is playing thru vg rn and we realized that the companions arent rly distinctly funny 😆😔#ig the origins companions were 'funny' but like. 💀 not rly my sense of humor lol

Wholly separate from Avowed, a game I don't feel especially compelled to consider playing and experience no temptation from, I feel as if the universe has been sending me signs that the time approaches to attempt Pillars again. Agh. It's been four years since the last time, I guess... And in that time I have become a person who likes BG1, so perhaps the hour is finally at hand...
#pillars 1 is a game I've made three different attempts at. I think the longest one I made it 15-20 hours in#even then I distinctly remember the game never grabbed me enough for me to be able to say what it was about#it kinda seems like a second playthrough game where it's Really good the second time but like. I often don't do second full playthroughs#and I definitely can't do that without getting through a first#on paper it feels like a game I should enjoy but in practice it's a game I like to hear wiki facts about and struggle to enjoy#and rtwp really makes it hard to love#BUT MAYBE NEXT TIME IS THE TIME.......#I like bg1 now anything is possible#although if I also start enjoying pillars then that will mean it has to come off my least favorite rpgs list just like bg1...#and wrath would officially claim the top spot. rip </3#rambling#my last pillars attempt was actually right after finishing my first kingmaker playthrough. a friend was playing it at the time

recently playing action rpgs or games with rtwp combat is actually good for my wellbeing. despite the fact turn-based is far and away my favorite combat system this is because i have a disease that results in me saying things like this. this build literally isn't viable btw hellknight is kind of dogshit like i'm not even a true minmaxer i need it to be somewhat roleplay-oriented which is if anything worse
#my discord server with only me in it which i use to save links and drawing ideas and rpg builds.#IF I EVER SAY IM REINSTALLING PWOTR ITS OVER FOR ME!!!!!#i won't get all that invested in rtwp or action combat which is absolutely to my benefit. I've built spellbooks that would make you hurl

#to be honest with you I’m not even sure I’m pressing the right button to attack#but I keep being fine in combat so I must be#I could switch to turn based but then it would take more time and maybe I would need to understand thing#RTWP is over so fast#I’m on normal but still only like 10 hrs in I imagine I’ll need to switch to easier or figure out wtf is going on at some point#pathfinder wotr#pathfinder#this gameplay is really weird for me for a lot of reasons but I’m keeping an open mind bc I love my stupid little halfling#and his triceratops

some game design thinky thoughts.
#it speaks#da gameplay complaints so weird to me. which i say as someone whose favorite combat was origins.#i mean 1 like i just enjoy a lot of different types of games. including crpg style tactical and including action#and inclulding me style arpg#but fr like people just keep saying over and over 'only three abilities???????????' like bro did u know in dai#that one of the warrior abilities was COMBAT ROLL.#a lot of things like that were previously abiliities and can in real time combat become different kinds of mechanics#and lemme say as someone who never invests in combat roll i spend a lot of time in dai fighting dragons by fruitlessly jumping in the hope#that THIS time i might be able to dodge the incoming attack i can clearly see coming (i can't)#idk like the point is obv if you don't like action-oriented combat whatever but complaining about design changes which actually serve#to make GOOD action-oriented combat is wild to me.#love that it's still rtwp my beloved. love giving commands to followers. love that it's built around synergies and that the wheel actually#tells you things like detonation combos and enemy resistances because i love taking advantage of stuff like that but find often in games#that information is overly obscured or a hassle to discover#and if i in real time action combat had 20 different abilities to choose from while still needing to dodge out of the way and pop off#an attack- that would be at worst overwhelming and distracting and at best feel like more than i need.#and at the same time! the skill tree looks great. best i've seen from da (and iterated from other franchises well imo) and still looks#plenty deep and customizable. way more than me's five little blocks or whatever#and wrt to party control yeah i'll miss it i like it a lot!#but again for this style of combat i literally don't think you need it and that's okay!#the game feeling better for what it is is okay!#even in dai like i have a lot of moments in that game where it's actually more a nuisance than anything else to fully switch control#to use an ability. e.g. i usually spec solas out with spirit magic and i almost always will fully enter the tactical cam just to#tell him to cast a barrier. or a revive. or dispel some demons before they spawn in#like i'm literally already just telling him to use abilities and then i switch back to me. and in that game there are def times where i hav#thought yeah this would actually be smoother if i could just tell him to use it +position it!#i spend the most time party switching in origins esp on higher difficulties but obv the game is most fine tuned for that#and you can play through the entire series as if it were an arpg if you want. that's what i did when i was a kid lmfao#well anyways. that's my two cents! i think it'll be really engaging! from what i've seen the game director isn't talking out of her ass!#vir dirthera

5 and 6 for sparrow, for the oc questions? :]
Aaaah thanks so much Ferne!!!
5. What kind of abilities and power level does your oc have? Why did you give them their powers? What's the in-universe reason?
For obvious reasons, Sparrow's powers and ability fluctuate as part of her canon story of becoming knight commander--
Pre-canon, Sparrow's a sword saint magus, so she's very skilled in fighting with a longsword as well as adept at magic. This was taught to her to give her versatility in defending Evaethi and fending off possible assassination attempts. She is very intelligent and works hard, so she's above average when it comes to her abilities, though her true strengths lie with her tactical mind and her ability to keep a cool head in bad situations, which is what tends to give her an edge in battle.
During WOTR, Sparrow obviously gains the additional magical abilities of the angel mythic path, focusing on strengthening and healing her allies. By the end of the game she's very close to demigod status, though she does not actually ascend by Areelu's plan, and would likely become some version of demigod within the next century or so as she grows in power with age.
Meta reasons for her abilities are basically I wanted to lean into the ice queen persona, so I pushed her intelligence and tactics--also, since i played the game on easy, crusade mode was a joke, so in-game Sparrow's a fantastic general and those skills lent itself to justifying that. As for her magus class...I know next to nothing about mechanics lol, I honestly picked that class because I liked the magus outfit the most.
6. What are the weaknesses in their power? Why did you give them their weaknesses? What's the in-universe reason?
Oooh this is an interesting one. I'd say mechanically, while she's skilled with a longsword she doesn't really know how to handle other weapons--and without her magic, she's very fragile, which makes her typical battle tactic of shielding herself and charging in risky. In general she can get injured far more easily, especially regarding broken bones--her plumekith heritage has given her hollow bones, which are easy to break. Beyond that, while she's great with tactics and contingencies, if something happens that's completely out of left field and she can't account for, it's hard for her to change things on the fly.
For meta reasoning, I like how her battle style and weaknesses reflects her actual personality--she might be strong, but she's brittle, and she is frightened of change.
#cassy answers#gutterspeak#oc: sparrow#pwotr pals#take all of the mechanics stuff with a big grain of salt and the knowledge that i am a Casual Girlie#my typical playstyle is to set the game on RTwP and let the AI sort it out#so like. what i imagine for sparrow's build might not be very realistic lol

trickster persuasion rank 3 is so busted and so fucking funny it's literally just.

#w appropriate buffs i think moon-shik can get +65 to persuasion?#might be funny to switch to rtwp and see who i can kill just by walking into a room#in turn-based it's like. i'm going to graciously skip my turn so you can stop being paralyzed and drop dead 🙄#wotr me. you have to use your path

playing BG1/2 is fun bc you can really see where Bioware got basically all their game design for Dragon Age from
#saint.txt#like the RTwP and the focus on keeping party members happy anf the romantic subplots in BG2 and such#idk it’s just fun to see an earlier version of a now-standard game mechanic before all of the iterations yannow
