So OP must have blocked me or turned off reblogs, but last week I had the following interaction with an RPF author (no shade to RPF authors who can behave like normal people btw, we're all in this together):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as if like magic, Swell Entertainment made an excellent YouTube video regarding the very same subject:
youtube
I think she sums it up best when she says: "If you wanna write fanfiction about me, fine, but never include another real life person. Not even other YouTubers, I don't care if I'm friends with them, they did not consent."
This is about CONSENT. It always has been and always will be. Real people deserve real bodily autonomy, even within fandom. I've been writing fanfic since the late LiveJournal era (around 15-16 years at this point) and that's ALWAYS been the standard. Twitter really did ruin some peoples' understanding of boundaries and it's a damn shame.

I mean this the nicest way possible but have you considered the fact that you just .. hate RPF? Wich is fine, like you said it's a gray area. It's not everyone's cup of tea, actually! It's not even mine because I actually came across those trailers you said! And I instantly went "ew wtf" and I clicked not interested, and then I another showed up, and clicked not interested, and then the algorithm went ok got it, and it's been a while thankfully, that hasn't showed up. So, what I mean is, there is content in the internet that is weird, that's for sure, but there's like... Ways to avoid it? And the way that this has been a persistent subject in your blog in such a deep way makes me think that you suffer it more than anyone, wich is fine but just, don't look at it anymore? I don't know what to say honestly because, again no to be rude but youre making the MOST out of it. And it's like you're treating fandom culture like this deep dark secret when its as public as it can be and I promise you the most a person can do is feel weirded out and mute that content, and hope it doesn't show up.! But for example, I hate povs content, and that has to be the most persistent content I've seen so far on F1, full of "you're the wife/girl/sister" blah blah and I'm a lesbian, I've clicked not interested so many times I lost count and IT KEPT showing up (until i figured muting y/n, driver x reader helps) so if it keeps you more calm there are ways to avoid content you dont like!
I get where you’re going with this but also, nah. I’ve always loved RPF and will keep consuming it whenever I can. I just make a big stink out of seeing it outside of tumblr and ao3 because of algorithms and the way I was taught to interact with RPF about fifteen years ago in which….these things have to stay within their intended circles at all costs. This is back when fandom content was not cool and mainstream and unless you kept your fandom life and your actual life very separate you get bullied to hell for it. Now, I often feel like the pendulum has swung a little too far the other way and there’s such a massive influx of new people because fandom culture is trendy that fandom etiquette is starting to collapse. The treatment of RPF being one of them.
RPF differs from POV content in two ways. The first is that POV content is a little more accepted than RPF in the general consciousness, usually because it’s het but also because it’s very obvious this is a self insert fantasy which while I imagine is awkward for drivers to see, can be easily laughed off as being so obviously just a fantasy. RPF on the other hand builds off of pre-existing relationships and lore and is usually slash, which already introduces an awkward element (and you can say the men shouldn’t have toxic masculinity all you like, it’s not just them that’s the issue it’s everyone who perceives them and the content), also it’s more difficult because people DO talk about these pairings platonically. In order to not experience Lestappen on my tiktok FYP, I can’t interact with any video that mentions those two in the same breath ever because the algorithm will eventually push me ship content even if I don’t want to see it and I click not interested. This happens over and over again.
I love RPF which am just on super high alert about RPF safe spaces being breached because I know from lived experience that it doesn’t bode well. This is also just personally not the way I was taught to interact with fandom, and again I’ve seen enough shit in my time to understand why that etiquette had to be enforced.

becoming compelled by the sebmark haunting the choscar narrative … also bc i read a ficlet ab them the other day that was the most insanely compelling sexual tension rivalry … i need more of them and NOT just people tagging choscar on landoscar posts. if charles isn’t in it idc
I need at least a full essay on this immediately.
This is the problem with rare pairs. They get lost in the larger ships more often than not. I am working on doing my part to bring more attention to Choscar as a dynamic because yes, it's so compelling and there is also a lot of nuance to mine there.
Charles did not serve this look in Baku for us to do nothing with it

Episode 222: Ask Fansplaining Anything: Part 19
Flourish’s final “Ask Fansplaining Anything” episode follows the format of the previous 18 (!!), with a new batch of (thoughtful as ever!) listener letters and voicemails. Topics discussed include people bringing a prior adaptation’s fandom baggage to a new version, writing RPF about people who aren’t actually famous at all, the tropification of fanfiction, and whether multiple versions of a character can feel true simultaneously.

Will never understand the "rpf is so weird" because "they are real people" crowd 🙄 because surely that crowd has never watched an episode of the crown or a biopic or some other piece of fiction ABOUT A REAL PERSON who might well still alive and that movie or book or drama has SURELY never involved any romance sub plot that is not 100% absolutely deadly based on rl facts 🤷‍♂️ and surely they also approach anyone they see watching or reading these high budget or published materials from the same high horse and with the same disdain.

Assad's incredible little rpf tirade has this wonderful "i'm new to having insane people be obsessed with me online" hubris that can only come from either the naïveté of not having been in the fandom trenches ever OR genuinely being equally as unhinged as the people writing the freakiest shit that a single tweet can contain
Babe, you are supposed to demurely pretend that you are not perceiving the vulgar lengths individuals will go to to express their fantasies of seeing your co-star's prostate be pulverized!!! Etiquette !!! Have some couth!!! Are you not a lady??!!! I need to see into his brain

it's pure madness to me that this HAD to be said
Ok. A little something I want to put out there.
Lestappen has been blowing up for a good while now and I for one am thoroughly enjoying it BUT. But. Let's please keep it and other rpf ships confined to tumblr, ao3 and the like.
They do have wags, almost all drivers do. The ship related content on insta and tiktok are very easy for them to come across, and for someone who is as chronically online as charles (as seen in the insta pfp fiasco) there's no way he's not seeing this stuff.
The thing with tumblr and ao3 is that they have a proper tagging system. Tiktok does not have that (I'm not just talking about TikTok btw), we don't know how these types of shippy content will make them and their wags feel. They are not characters they are real people.
Also, please stop making weird AI videos of drivers kissing. I got jump scared by a Simi one yesterday.
Tldr: Please practice proper fandom etiquette. Especially when it comes to RPF's. And stop using AI for creepy shit.

Hi, I had a few questions about your beta offer for Fandom Trumps Hate. Are you ok with RPF? If it makes any difference, I'm writing a complicated friendship and romance for people who were actually involved with each other that way in real life--it's a fix-it for everything that went wrong between them.I was especially interested in working with you since my story revolves strongly around queerness, hurt/comfort, found family, trauma recovery, and a poly relationship. It sounds like we 1/2
hi nonny! i think your second ask got eaten by the tumblr gods, feel free to resend if needed!
anyway, yes, i am okay with rpf! i'm not actively engaged in any rpf fandoms but i think rpf is cool and fun

hi! just asking your opinion on RPF, i’m very very new to the proship/fanfic community and really don’t know how to feel abt it. i haven’t heard anyone’s takes on it so far so i’d love to hear your thoughts!
RPF is just another form of fiction. Its no different to any kind of other fictional literature, fandom space, creative action, ect. The people are, essentially, just characters. You're using them to tell a story.
A lot of people's issue with RPF comes into play because of individuals who ignore the proper etiquette behind RPF and ruin it for everyone. The general concern is that unlike fictional characters, real people are capable of seeing what you create and getting upset, offended or angry over it.
This is where its important to remember the following rules regarding RPF:
Never send RPF to the people whom it concerns, people close to them or people in reasonable contact with them. Personally, even if an actor has said they don't mind RPF about themselves, I wouldn't push it on them. Accepting something's existence isn't always the same as wanting to be invested or involved in it.
Similar to above, make sure you're not tagging them or using searches the person is known to frequent. (E.g; if you're posting ship art, don't tag the people involved.)
Where possible, keep RPF to closed-off websites like AO3 and Tumblr where the people involved would actually have to go looking for it in order to be exposed to it. (Sites like X are next to impossible to actually curate and monitor and are awful for this kind of thing.)
Ensure you are properly tagging and marking your content so in the instance it can't fully be prevented from reaching the person/people, they are explicitly aware of what it is. (Another reason why sites like Tumblr and AO3 are simply the best option.)
Anyone who is famous will be aware that there are people who view them and use their image sexually. Every single famous person knows this. In industries like kpop, even, bromances are actively marketed because they know its lucrative and sought after.
Famous people are also more than aware of how to avoid content they don't want to see. They're aware of sites like AO3 and know once they go there its a lawless (albeit well tagged) wasteland of hardcore smut and the unimaginable. They know if they don't want to see certain things they simply have to stay away from certain platforms, tags, key words, ect.
Famous people aren't helpless little ducklings accidentally stumbling upon twisted non-con fanfic of them and their colleagues on an hourly basis like some people assume.
Although RPF is just another form of fiction is does require a bit more respect, conduct and consideration. That's all.

this makes a lot of sense to me and actually makes me feel better about the stuff he said about the fans. I was worried he was embarrassed, that we were too "odd" for him now. but your explanation makes me think he just needed to distance himself from certain things publicly.
as a fan, I like NSFW fanart, but I would understand if people didn't want to draw it anymore. but if people do draw it can you send it to me please
He said he doesn’t support nsfw art
You quoted people saying the he said to stop or to keep it private. So yeah he never said any of those words but he clearly says I don’t support it.
So what are we supposed to do. He didn’t specify he said he doesn’t support it. For me personally that means people should stop making nsfw art. But that’s my interpretation so what is the problem with people interpreting it differently like I’m not trying to misconstrue his own words but that’s how it seems to me
we weren't the point. us, as fans, weren't the point. "dream enables and support doxxing" "dream enables and supports harassment" "dream enables and supports nsfw content of him and his friends and with minors". we are not the point. giving a direct speech saying "i do NOT support this content" is the point
you're free to do whatever you want. but if antis catch you doing it, they cannot longer say "this is what dream enables and supports" because there's textual literal video proof of him saying he doesn't
that's what i mean with paying attention to what he was saying, how he was saying it, and in what context. fans weren't the point here, he says at the end of the video he doesn't want any fan to take anything negative out of it. but "sometimes you being odd makes me look odd". this is about him, him shielding himself finally from all the bullshit people throw at him
no anti can ever say he's okay with weird content, with nsfw content, with doxxing and harassment. because he isn't, and there's recorded proof he isn't. that was the goal
i personally still aren't even sure what i'm going to do with my nsfw art ! i would hate to put him in a position where people weaponise my art to make him look bad. but i also understand that if you keep everything fully in private, or even completely away from twitter, the risk of that happening is minimal to basically 0
( and sure you can scratch off this as my interpretation of his words. but if you start harassing other fans for content they make in private far away from the public, then you're also going against his request. just be normal, he asked us to be normal, don't set him up, and that's that )

Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a little terrifying but hello!! Posted my first fic on ao3!! I would've saved the illustrations for the fic's eyes only, but I'm too happy with them haha. Hope you'll still go on to read regardless!!
As always, my thoughts and progress, since I can't help myself:
I'm soooooo proud of these. I never ever really do dramatic lighting, so I'm really surprised that I pulled it off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's surreal actually posting this because for a while, I've thought about how if I ever post a fic, I'll have to make illustrations too because I can't do anything not full force. Look at me now! I'm shocked. Also didn't think I'd finish it tonight, but here it sits before you nevertheless(though as always, I'm writing this past my bedtime before class, time efficient as always.) So with that being said, here are some notes, though if I had known I'd be writing this so soon, I would've prepared more lol.
First of all, I hope it's clear both of these are Mark's perception. Gah, the fact that his face is the only one you can see clearly. The first is obviously him unwillingly fantasizing about what exactly went down last night.
Aghhhhh the difference in colors and settings of the two drawings is so important to me. The warmth and intimacy of the bed behind curtains in the first one, and the coldness and openess of the second. It's so clear Mark feels like he's been distanced, like he's been ousted. It's like he's been thrown outside on a cold winter's day, no longer able to feel the heat from the comfortable warm stove inside.
Mark was probably assigned to Seb bcs he has a much greater appreciation for the Spanish etiquette, which Seb has very little interest in. He'll abide by it when he absolutely has to. But he's just a very non-typical Emperor. People find it charming so it's not a public death sentence for him, but it is an issue. Thus, Mark is there to keep him in line. Though important to note that when Fernando, who has an equal if not greater respect for the showmanship of etiquette, realizes Mark is interested in that as well, they start warming up to each other.
The inherent disrespect of Fernando just. Throwing Seb's clothing onto the floor. Meanwhile he probably took like, 20 minutes folding his up(that's what Seb was gonna tell Mark at the end of the fic.) Borderline ripping off Seb's clothes only to edge him. Its not even like the ripping off the clothes is because of passion or anything, he's deliberately being an asshole. Don't worry Nandl, Seb's turned on by it!
So sorry to marknando fans if their dynamic feels like a complete 180 haha. Its not like I'm like, they actually hate each other!! It's just their relationship under completely different circumstances. They're like two dogs in a dog fight, they don't have any real reason to hate each other, but they're put against each other regardless. They don't understand their hatred, just know that they have it and that they're supposed to have it. The inherent hatred the mistress has for the spouse, and vice versa. If they actually were able to talk without barriers, they'd realize they actually get along pretty well. They kinda just hate each other because of their respective relationships to Seb. And then there's Seb who's mostly completely oblivious to his effect, though of course plays with it a bit.
Seb's marriage completely recontextualizes their relationship in Mark's eyes. Though there's something incredibly sado-masochistic about the way he can't blame Seb for it at all. He's a loyal dog after all. But when it was just them, he was obviously Seb's main companion and lover. Seb definitely slept with people on the side, but Mark brushed that off: 1. Bcs its very period typical. 2. He was the main, they were the side, what more needs to be said! But now *he's* the side piece, and is left wondering if their relationship was down to proximity alone. Not to pull a Mark and completely excuse Seb, but it's not. Just very different perceptions of love and relationships. And again, as I've mentioned before, he was raised to always be the most important person in the room, so he obviously has very different understandings, especially since he's always the center.
NANDL!!!!!! In my Habsburg book I've been reading lately, they randomly referred to one of them affectionately as "Nandl" and it's stuck in my head ever since. Can we start a movement to canonize that as an official Fernando nickname? I'm sooooo fond of it, I litrally ended the fic that way just so I could shoehorn that nickname in.
Speaking of the ending. It was really tough, I almost wanted to have Fernando burst in, looking for his ring, and then coming across whatever that is. But I didn't want to disrupt their moment anymore, it felt cruel. Though shame I couldn't mention that the reason why Seb's pants are nowhere to be found is because Fernando accidentally put them on and didn't realize till he was out of the room.
*I FORGOT TO POINT OUT ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS! Truly the danger of writing a post while falling asleep. There's something so incredibly funny to me the way they're talking so refined and then Seb just throws out: "that guy." It's a way to show his own disrespect of Fernando, not even using his name, implying he's just some guy(nur ein Kerl.) I laughed writing it cause it reminds me of the random dry humor anecdotes I've read lately.

Hello, sfth fandom! I've noticed that there's been a surge of sfth fanfiction lately, so here's a friendly guide to tagging on ao3.
(quick note: none of these are de facto rules as much as they are advice from someone who's been using ao3 for years; you don't have to follow these tips at all, they're just to help new ao3 users navigate the tagging system)
Rating
There are 5 different ratings that your fic can have: Not Rated, General Audiences, Teen and Up, Mature, and Explicit. The rating tag tells the readers what level of mature content is in the fic.
Not Rated
It's best to avoid this as it tells nothing about how much mature content is in the fic. If you tag your fic as Not Rated, it's probably best to go a little more in-depth in your additional tags or fic summary to prevent accidentally triggering people.
General Audiences
This rating is for fics that basically have no mature content whatsoever. Essentially, it means that the fic is suitable for anyone of any age. A rule of thumb that I use is to imagine a 10-year-old reading your work. If the thought of that makes you uncomfortable, then General Audiences is probably not the best rating for your fic.
Teen and Up
This rating is for fics that contain content that may not be suitable for readers younger than 13. This can involve swearing, discussion of mature topics (sex, mental health, etc.), or mild violence.
If you don't feel comfortable with children reading your fic, but your fic doesn't have any explicit content, then Teen and Up is probably the best rating for it.
Mature
This rating is for fics that contain adult themes, such as sex or violence. Usually, fics with this rating have heavy themes but aren't very explicit about it. A sfth-specific example would be Inside the Mysterious Cube, as it has violent themes but doesn't have any crazy brutality or gore.
Explicit
This rating is for fics that contain heavy adult themes, including explicit sex and graphic violence. Generally speaking, most (if not all) smutfics should be tagged as Explicit.
Warning(s)
Warnings are used to warn (surprise surprise) the reader for any potentially triggering content. It's good fanfiction etiquette to always tag warnings, even if you're concerned about spoilers. If you're especially worried about spoilers, you can tag your fic as Choose Not To Use Warnings and add a TW in the notes for chapters that include triggering content.
The warnings are pretty straightforward for the most part, except for one thing.
Choose Not To Use Warnings vs No Warnings Apply
This is something that can be very confusing for new ao3 users (and even some old users). It essentially boils down to this: No Warnings Apply means that none of the warnings that ao3 provides are in your fic, while Choose Not To Use Warnings means that you don't want to explicitly tag any of the warning, either to avoid spoilers or because you're unsure about which warnings you should tag.
I personally use Choose Not To Use Warnings when my fic deals with heavy topics non-explicitly. For example, I have written a fic before that involved heavy instrusive thoughts and similar mental health issues, which I thought could trigger unwanted thoughts for the reader, so I tagged it as Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings.
Fandoms
(quick note: "common tag refers to tags that have been wrangled by an ao3 tag wrangler (you don't need to know what that is) and can be used to filter works)
This is the thing that seems to confuse most sfth fanfiction writers. The "Shoot from the Hip - fandom" tag redirects to British Comedy RPF, which is pretty common for niche RPF fandoms.
What I personally do is tag the fandom as Shoot from the Hip, along with any longforms if they apply, which should have their own common tags.
If you're writing a fic for a longform that doesn't have a common tag yet, you should format your tag like this:
[longform name] - Shoot from the Hip Improvised Sketch (e.g. The Unrelenting Aubergine - Shoot from the Hip Improvised Sketch)
I would advise for you to tag both the longform(s) and Shoot from the Hip - fandom. As an example, this is how I tagged my Unrelenting Aubergine and Wild, Wet & Worrisome fics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the order of the tags doesn't really matter here)
Relationships & Characters
Okay, this is probably the weirdest thing to tag for the sfth fandom since there are pretty much no common tags for these. For the characters/relationships that have no common tags (which is pretty much all of them), it's best to format the tag like this:
[character/relationship] ([longform where it originates from) (e.g. Derek (The Unrelenting Aubergine), Bubba/Jeremiah (Inside the Mysterious Cube))
The other way to go about it is to use the most common tag. For example, I tagged my Ditch fic as Derek/Titch without the (The Unrelenting Aubergine) since most of the fics were tagged as such.
Just for reference, here are the boys' common character tags for the RPF writers:
Tumblr media
Additional Tags
Here is where you can go wild with the tags. These tags are used to give the reader a brief idea of what the fic is about, and you can feel free to add as many or as few tags as you wish. However, it is good etiquette to not add too many tags, so make sure that just the essentials are covered. For example, if your fic features a chair, there's no need to put "Chair" in your tags.
Tags You Should Probably Include
Now, these are all my personal opinion, but I feel like these tags are almost essential for any fic so that the reader can get a quick idea of what mood/genre the fic is going to be:
Fluff - cute and non-sexual things happen (cuddling, kissing, general affection, love confessions, etc.), isn't exclusive to romantic situations.
Angst - sad things happen (breaking up, crying, self-esteem issues, etc.).
Hurt/comfort - one character is physically and/or emotionally hurt, and another character helps them. There's a separate Emotional Hurt/Comfort tag for the character going through emotional struggles.
Anything sexual - do any sexual things happen in your fic? If yes, then you should probably tag it. If the sexual content is only implied (e.g. two characters waking up in the same bed naked), there's an Implied Sexual Content tag for that.
Any heavy content - things like abuse and violence should be tagged, even if you already have a warning for it. This is just to prevent anyone from reading something that might be triggering for them.
Other than that, add as many tags as you need to describe your fic.
A PSA About RPF
Finally, since this is a fandom that involves real people, here's a quick PSA for RPF writers and readers alike:
Please do not share any RPF fics with the boys. This goes for any work, explicit or not.
Also, please respect RPF writers. You may not feel comfortable with RPF, and that's totally fine! Just please don't harass RPF writers just because you believe that RPF is wrong. If there's a fic that you're uncomfortable with, just don't read it and please don't go leaving hate comments on that fic.
I know that this fandom is full of lovely people, but I feel the need to get this out of the way as it's an issue that many RPF fandoms have to deal with.
I really hope this helps!! :]
