OTD in Music History: Composer Carl Nielsen (1865 - 1931) is born in Denmark. Brought up in a poor but highly artistic household, Nielsen demonstrated his own profound musical abilities at an early age. He initially cut his teeth in a military band, before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen (1884 - 86). Nielsen's first completed mature composition -- the "Suite for Strings" -- was premiered in 1888; the following year, he began a 16-year stint as a second violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra, and then in 1916 he nabbed a teaching post at the Danish Academy. Although his original works are now internationally acclaimed, Nielsen's life was sadly marred by many personal and professional difficulties. His early music was inspired by such archetypal "late Romantic" composers as Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) and Edvard Grieg (1843 – 1907), but, as he matured, Nielsen developed his own pungent and unusual harmonic and structural style: chromatic and often dissonant harmony... solid contrapuntal structure... concentrated motivic treatment... bold extensions of tonality, with frequent polytonal passages… The best known of Nielsen's works are his Symphony #2 (1902, subtitled "The Four Temperaments"), Symphony #3 (1911, subtitled "Sinfonia Espansiva"), and Symphony #4 (1916, subtitled "The Inextinguishable"); his concertos for violin (1911), flute (1926), and clarinet (1928); the opera "Maskarade" (1906); his four string quartets and two string quintets; and a series of songs based on Danish folk traditions, which are frequently performed within Denmark.

The only footage made of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. Filmed in 1926 at the Copenhagen home of his friend Carl Johan Michaelsen.
Text translation:
0'00: Stockholmgade 51, Christmastime 1926
0'18: Carl Nielsen comes to visit 1'10: We would like to hear a bit of your new Flute Concerto, unless you prefer "Jens Vejmand". The children can sing that one.
1'26: Oh, you want to play something from "The Mother", because she is so pretty. Well, go on as you please.

Bjørn Wiinblad (Sept. 20, 1918 - 2006) was a famous Danish artist and designer. He loved working in ceramics, but also as a set designer for theater or within hotel and restaurant decor. His many, many everyday products are still found in millions of homes world wide, and he has works in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, as well as at MoMA in New York.
His style was very up-beat, almost anti-Scandinavian in its love of squiggles, happy faces and orientalist settings. Here is a design for a Scheherezade-themed quilt:
Femte tema: Forlæg til detalje i Scheherezade-billedtæppe, The Dallas Apparel Mart, 1971 - gouache on paper
