Godzilla 2014 made me believe cinema was real again.
That is...such a weird title and statement. It started off as “This film made me believe cinema was real again.” which is again, still very weird. But after seeing Fast X yesterday, I REALLY wanted to see this film. I have not rewatched it in some years. It’s been an hour since I watched it.
But yeah, Godzilla 2014. The first film in the Monsterverse. A film that is loved or hated by whoever you talk to. But what are my thoughts on it after not seeing it fully I assume for nearly four years.
I was a bit more critical or so years back. But let me just get straight to the point. Because I won’t make this a detailed review (Turns out, it became detailed, I took an hour and nearing two to finish this) and won’t spoil anything despite the film will be ten years old next years. Despite the concerns of how I would feel when I would watch it. Here’s what I think now about the film...
I FUCKING LOVE THIS FILM.
I SHIT YOU NOT.
(Again, this got detailed, there’s more to read in the keep reading option)
Granted, I totally get the criticisms and nitpicks people have towards this film. But to me, this is likely the BEST start to an American Godzilla franchise. And I feel like since I’m older now. I appreciate this film more so now than when I was younger. Mainly because I think my priorities are different. And also again, a film I saw yesterday just...what I watched yesterday. I also planned on watching Godzilla 2014 sometime, but I felt the time was now because oh my God. I needed this.
Again, I totally get the criticisms towards this film. Let me get straight to the point. I really think some of the advertising did not do this film well. Despite how powerful the promotions were. I legit think some of it needed to be different. Because the expectations were high. But also, the main protagonist, Ford Brody.
In all seriousness, even though he’s a passive protagonist, even though he doesn’t seem like it when I look back at it. While Joe Brody’s performance by Bryan Cranston is undeniably powerful. Especially that emotional scene with him and his wife. But I don’t mind Ford, Aaron Taylor Johnson does a good job. Everyone does a good job with the roles they are given. The best ones I think are Ken Watanabe as Ishiro Serizawa and also again, Bryan.
I feel like maybe the best option to me would’ve been to combine the characters of Joe and Ford into one character. Which may be difficult. Or somehow convince the audience in the promos, “No, this isn’t Godzilla vs Walter White. Please don’t expect that.” Because I legit feel like the roles are pretty good in where they are at. I do agree that maybe give more humanizing moments with Ford despite he’s already a fine character. Maybe moments with him family that’s more akin to something like Roy Scheider’s Chief Martin Brody (Amusing they both have the same last names) from Jaws. Maybe a moment similar to this between Ford and Sam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AiYQtzRD8w
Yet we do have a scene with his family. I’m rambling on, but honestly, none of the human characters are bad.
Maybe Ford could’ve used a character arc to maybe get people invested in his character. But again, none of the characters bothered me. They all do their jobs fine within the story they are in. Now, let’s get to the other parts.
BECAUSE HOLY SHIT. I WISHED I COULD’VE SEEN THIS FILM IN AN IMAX THEATER.
But in all seriousness, with the room I’m sleeping in. It can feel like my own theater room in a way. But seriously, there so much good stuff in this film. Such as the score, its fit so damn well. Even though it may not be the iconic Akira Ifukube theme which they weren’t allowed to use. But it fits damn well with this film.
Let me tell you this and I got to get to this point this. Brian Rogers stressed his and Legendary’s wish was to revive Godzilla in the same fashion Legendary did with Batman. And the influences for Godzilla 2014 were films like Jaws, Alien, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. With Gareth stating he grew up watching Spielberg films and wanted to do the same thing with this. Along with growing up with early 80′s and late 70′s action films.
Let me tell you this. Despite whatever issues I may have with this film. But it’s not a whole lot. But let me tell you this, I think they managed to actually do that. They actually did it. Because this film is likely in my list of favorite Godzilla films. I now get what I thought they said they were trying to do “The Dark Knight” of Godzilla. Yet that wasn’t an official quote, I took that Legendary quote wrong of them reviving Godzilla the same way they did Batman. But I must say, they did well on that.
I legit felt excited and happy watching this film. Especially at certain epic moments and the more tense moments. Those were good, this is a legitimate good film. Because I’ll say this, it’s fine some people may find this film boring, and complaining about the fights being at nighttime. Or cutting off away from the fights at times. I totally get that. Do I wish some of that was dealt with differently? Absolutely, but I am fucking happy.
I haven’t even talked about Godzilla and the MUTO’s. I’ll always love Godzilla, the portrayal of him, and all that. He’s a presence when he’s on screen and my God, he is done incredible justice. The “Last Samurai” approach to his character works well here. And despite my strange feelings towards them. But I seem to love the MUTO’s more than ever. Or it’s mainly because I love their uniqueness and how different they are. While they aren’t characters like King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, Gigan or the Gryphon from the original screenplay for TriStar’s Godzilla. But that’s okay, they’re so different and have so many elements that make me appreciate them as characters. Kind or...more so than some of their original concepts. That being Rokmutul and Pterodactyl. But fuck, I would’ve loved those guys too. But again, the MUTO’s make more sense.
There’s so much good stuff in this film. The production value, the directing, again, the score and so much other stuff. But I think I’ve rambled long enough. While I could be overpraising it and the Godzilla franchise has been on my mind lately. Including that ridiculous title I wrote for this post.
But alias, I was legit happy watching this film. And again, now that I’m older, I appreciate this film much more. And I’m someone who loves films like Kong Skull Island and Godzilla KOTM 2019.
This is such a good film.

Did you ever see the Woody Harrleson LBJ movie? Did you think he did a better job than Bryan Cranston?
I did see it and I love Woody, but it was terrible. It was a terrible LBJ impersonation and it looked like an SNL sketch with horrible makeup. I was taken out of the movie the first time I saw Woody as LBJ because the makeup was so atrocious.
Rob Reiner's idea for the film seemed to be to take every funny, awful, and interesting story about LBJ and blend them together, even if he had to have scenes where those things were all happening simultaneously. And even then, nothing was explained and there was no depth to what was going on, even though it was a movie about one of the most complex personalities to ever sit in the Oval Office and took place during a remarkable moment in history. It was really bad.
Unsurprisingly, Bryan Cranston was incredible in All the Way, which was also an infinitely better story and film. Cranston nailed LBJ's voice and mannerisms, and the makeup was spot-on. I loved All the Way. I hope that they eventually decide to do a follow-up because it was based on one of two plays about LBJ by playwright Robert Schenkkan, and his other play is called The Great Society. Apparently, Brian Cox -- the legend best known now for playing Logan Roy in Succession -- has played LBJ in Schenkkan's The Great Society, and that's a really interesting choice. I'd be interested in seeing that, but I'd rather see Cranston replay the role in that successor play.

EXCLUSIVE: Clan Fraser continues to grow in numbers as Tony Curran (Defiance, Red Road) has joined the Starz prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood as Lord Lovat, Jamie Fraser’s grandfather, in a series regular role.
Production recently kicked off on the new series, a prequel of the Starz hit period drama Outlander, in Scotland. The original series stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser and Sam Heughan as her husband, Jamie Fraser. The franchise is inspired by the work of Diana Gabaldon, who serves as a consulting producer on both shows.
Blood of My Blood will explore the lives and relationships of Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine). The 10-episode series will center on the two parallel love stories set in two different time periods, with Jamie’s parents in the early 18th century Scottish Highlands and Claire’s parents in WWI England.
Matthew B Roberts will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series. Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis, who developed Outlander for television, under their production banner Tall Ship Productions will also executive produce the series alongside Roberts and Story Mining & Supply Company. Outlander: Blood of My Blood is produced by Sony Pictures Television and will be available across all Starz platforms in the U.S. and Canada.
This is Curran’s second series for Starz currently on the slate. In addition to the Outlander prequel, he is set to star as King James I in Mary & George, opposite Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine portraying the titular mother and son who are scheming social climbers. The seven-part limited series, premiering on April 5, is inspired by the scandalous true story of a treacherous Mary and George Villiers who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the Court of England and the bed of King James I.
Curran trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama who rose to fame in the TV series, This Life. He has worked extensively across TV, film and theatre both in the UK and US.
Recently he starred alongside Martin Compston and Ashley Jenson in the onscreen adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s acclaimed novel Mayflies* for which he was nominated for Best TV Actor at the Scottish BAFTA Awards and won Best Male Actor at the Scottish Television Awards.
Earlier in 2023 Curran also appeared in the second season of Your Honor with Bryan Cranston alongside the 10-part investigative drama series The Calling written by David E Kelly and directed by Barry Levinson.
Additional credits include Outlaw King alongside Chris Pine, Florence Pugh and Aaron Taylor Johnson, the Showtime drama series Ray Donovan and the film version of the Emmy award-winning drama Deadwood, among many others.
He is repped by Innovative Artists and Link Entertainment in the U.S. and Scott Marshall Partners in the U.K. as well as Brecheen, Feldman, Breimer, Silver and Thompson.

Daredevil (vol. 1) #91: Fear Is the Key!
Read Date: January 16, 2023 Cover Date: September 1972 ● Writer: Gerry Conway ● Penciler: Gene Colan ● Inker: Tom Palmer ● Colorist: {uncredited} ● Letterer: Artie Simek ● Editor: Roy Thomas ●
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● I wonder how much longer these will be based in San Francisco, or how long Natasha will be around. I know there's a temperature title change coming up soon. ● (pg 2) good lookin' out, Widow! ● (pg 3) now what? ● at least there's a pair of shapely asses
● here's this Danny French dude again. what's his deal? ● recently Daredevil has shifted from more of a romance comic to more of an international spy thriller feel. it's an interesting change for now, but I do miss NYC and the law office ● Natasha follows French to a building's subbasement, where she interrupts a sale of something in a box ● this artwork is fabulous though
● turns out the stuff in the box was just papers. Fredericks knew nothing about the "energy globe" until Widow said something ● Fredericks leaves, and Natasha accuses French of using the globe against her and Daredevil (fear attacks) ● uh-oh, is this gonna be Karen 2.0? ● Mr. Fear attacks DD on a rooftop, but DD had prepared a gaseous antidote. Mr. Fear knows DD's name… I can't remember when that happened ● I'm … not really sure what's going on in this issue ● Larry Cranston is apparently Mr. Fear ● he'll probably die since he knows Matt's secret ● (exactly 1 panel later) yup ● 👏👏
Synopsis: Falling down to the street below, Daredevil is saved by the Black Widow who overcomes her sudden bout of fear. However, DD gets chewed out by the Widow who is fed up for the lack of thanks she receives for helping him out. The Widow then tails Danny French to a meeting where she believes he is trying to sell off the Project 4 globe and attempts to stop the deal. Realizing she had made a mistake and that the deal had nothing to do with Project 4, she finally agrees to help Danny finish their mission. After Daredevil takes up a job working for Jason Sloan's law firm, he resumes his patrols as Daredevil, and is confronted by a new Mr. Fear. Battling Fear on the roof of Sloan's law firm it is revealed that this Fear knows Daredevil's secret identity. Unmasked, Fear is revealed to be Matt's college friend (and Sloan employee) Larry Cranston. After knocking out an arriving Sloan, DD demands answers from Cranston. Cranston reveals that he was present when Starr Saxon killed the original Mr. Fear Zoltan Drago. Drago told Cranston where he could find a spare Mr. Fear costume and weapons. Afterwards, Cranston deduced Daredevil's identity by the coincidence that both he and Matt Murdock moved to San Francisco with Natasha Romanoff. He decided to use the Fear costume to get revenge on Murdock whom he always despised. With his plan for revenge foiled, Cranston jumps off the building plummeting to his doom. Calling home to check on Natasha, Ivan tells Matt that she has left and possibly for good. (https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Daredevil_Vol_1_91)

Reservoir Dogs (1992) - Movie Review / Fancast
I watched Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs for the first time tonight. (By the time I finished this, it is actually DAYS later) Remember all of the things stated in this review are my PERSONAL opinion.
Let's talk about Reservoir Dogs, because I enjoyed this film much more than I thought I would.
So, being completely transparent, I accidentally spoiled myself ten minutes in when I went to search which color Tim Roth was playing. Regardless, I enjoyed the film.
I thought the latter half of the movie was more entertaining, with the inclusion of Joe and Eddie and the more in-depth looks into White, Blonde, and Orange.
I'm not very good at serious movie reviews and don't take movies all that seriously anyways, so I am comfortable admitting that Mr. Orange was a big selling point for me. I very much enjoyed the close-up of him smirking. It really felt like a tragic love story at some parts, I was rooting for Orange and Mr. White.
Now on to the more entertaining part, let's recast. Pictures at the end.
We'll start with Mr. White. Originally played by Harvey Keitel, I think Jason Bateman would be an exceptional recast. He does serious, as Ozark proves, he does comedically dramatic, he is dilf material, and I don't think they look UNALIKE... there are some similarities that caught my eye. Honorable mention goes to a man of the same name, Mr. White, Bryan Cranston.
Mr. Pink feels like a no-brainer. Originally played by Steve Buscemi, who else other than Bill Skarsgard. Mr. Pink is slimy and he has awful posture and, for some reason, that reminded me of the very handsome Bill Skarsgard. He will never escape the typecast. For as long as I can remember, Roman Godfrey to Pennywise to that dude in Barbarian... they're all shady as fuck.
You know who else is shady as fuck? Mr. Blonde. Michael Madsen is the original Mr. Blonde and he brings such a specific energy to Blonde. I found it hard to find a good match. Looks-wise, Richard Madden. Though, in general, I think Vincent Cassel would be a very creepy, very sexy Blonde and if you've seen that scene in Ocean's Twelve, you'd know the "Stuck In The Middle With You" scene is in good hands.
I reluctantly add this next one. "Nice Guy" Eddie, played by Chris Penn, is being recast to probably my least favorite actor of all time, Jonah Hill. Fuck, it just works so well.
You know that cop, Martin whatever? Yeah, he's now Rami Malek. This is payback for being in Amsterdam.
Tim Roth, the reason I knew the plot of the entire movie before watching it, I fucking love your face man. Mr. Orange is now fan-cast as Andy Bean. Completely self-indulgent. Though, past Gee apparently thought Joesph Gorden-Levitt was a good contender because his name is very bold in my notes. Also, self-indulgent.
Randy Brook's Holdaway would be brilliantly played by Brian Tyree Henry. If you've seen Bullet Train, he is fucking incredible.
For Joe, originally played by Lawernce Tierney, I give thee Brian Cox of the Logan Roy variety. Or Vincent D'Onofrio of the Marvel supervillain variety.
Moving on to Mr. Brown, I could not decide. Give my dude Jake Sim a couple of years and he's perfect. I also have Michael C. Hall, Matt Berry, and Mark Sheppard. I don't guess it really matters as long as they can deliver an entire speech about Madonna's Like A Virgin and make it as disgusting as possible.
Before researching, I had wanted Edward Bunker's Mr. Blue to be Danny Trejo. Here's a fact I learned while researching for this review, Bunker and Trejo actually served jail time together. Small world. Oh, and Bob Odenkirk was the runner-up for Mr. Blue. I love that man.
Shit, I think that's it. Now I have to go make a collage of all these actors.
