roxy using bro's sword is a subversion and not a reinforcement of the "hero" role. she doesn't pull the sword out of the stone, she phases it through, it means nothing to her THEREFORE she can wield it as a weapon. it ends up stabbing HIC because the condesce is also trying to embody a larger than life ideal. using a sword/ putting up those fronts never end well for the user and always comes back to bite them.

What do you think would happen if the Debu that died had no family or friends willing to participate in the funeral? What if there is no one alive that wants them to live on through them? What if they just happened to not really know anyone when the time finally came?

Burying a disowned family member to ensure they don't live on would be a hell of a move. Not sure if your family choosing to bury you would bring shame to you or the family that chose to do that but I'd bet it'd be some kind of shame

That kind of scenario could leak into all sorts of sociatal assumptions about anyone that's buried out of neccessity too. Hearing someone was buried and immediately assuming they deserved it would be a hell of a thing but I'd believe it

Dying alone would be pretty sad though. Maybe it becomes a community thing where local volunteers show up instead? Food for thought

Actually, I believe THIS is the only time they'd bury someone without being legally obligated to (in times of Debu getting colonized, the other sophonts who thought it was weird would force them to bury their dead), and this is kind of the worst case scenario when it comes to Debu - The fact you die without being eaten (or instead eaten by animals) is analogous to like... dying alone in their eyes. It is VERY shameful specifically to the deceased because the scenario tends to be "nobody wants to go to your funeral", though there is the option for you to be eaten by those in need if you put it in your will.

I think there could be volunteer groups for that, but I don't think it would be "people who will eat you so you live on through them instead," it would be more like volunteers who prepare you to become food for a homeless shelter, which is significantly less shameful since "you give up your body so people in need can eat you" is 1. charitable and 2. the original point of the cannibalism. But if NOBODY eats you then you're getting buried and everyone's just gonna kinda... scowl at your grave wondering wtf you did.

I've been sitting on these asks for like a hot minute bc I feel like I fucked up the definition/vibes of the Debu cannibalism but like, at it's core, not getting eaten is like dying alone, and getting eaten by animals instead is as fucked up to them as it would be to us if a dog lept into the casket and started eating the deceased. Unless it isn't, if the culture allows for that kind of thing
