Designs and colours of shells are wonderous - a true mystery of nature.
Here the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute explains the technology of shell-building. Yes, I understand everything, but it is still a wonder. Images are from various internet archives.
"Where do shells come from? The animals make them. Mollusks have an outermost layer of tissue on their bodies. Called the mantle, this layer connects the animal to its shell. The mantle also creates that shell.
Specialized cells in the mantle build the shell using proteins and minerals. These are secreted—released into the space outside the cells. There, the proteins create a framework that provides support for the growing shell. The proteins in the framework also determine which minerals are used in specific parts of the shell.
Calcium carbonate, the main mineral found in shells (including eggshells), binds to the protein. If you have ever seen construction workers build with concrete, this is similar. The protein is like the steel rebar that gives shape and support. Calcium carbonate is like the cement that fills in all the gaps.
Calcium carbonate can form two different types of crystals. One is called calcite. This incredibly common crystal can be found all over the world. Calcite makes up chalk, marble, coral, limestone—and seashells. The other form is aragonite. This crystal has a different arrangement of calcium carbonate. Both calcite and aragonite are found in seashells.
A mollusk’s shell has three layers. Each is made up of similar materials. But how those materials are arranged gives them each a different look and feel. The outermost layer is mostly protein. It’s often rough and may have bumps or spikes. Proteins in the middle layer cause calcium carbonate to form calcite crystals. These fill in the spaces, making the shell tough to break.
The innermost layer is the one in contact with the mantle. It’s a smooth, iridescent layer called nacre or mother-of-pearl. Nacre is made up of protein and calcium carbonate. But it looks and feels completely different from other parts of the shell. That’s because the mantle secretes different proteins for different layers. Different proteins cause calcium carbonate to crystallize in different ways. Those used in the middle layer create calcite. Those used in the innermost layer create aragonite.
As the animal grows, its shell must grow along with it. This happens along the outer edges. A snail adds to its shell around the opening, where it pokes its head out. For a clam or mussel, it’s the outer edges where the two shells separate. The result is growth rings, like those in a tree, that allow us to measure a mollusk’s age.
When the animal inside dies, its shell is gradually pounded against the rocks and sand. Over time, shells break down. They become part of the sand. White beaches have sand made almost entirely of tiny bits of shells."

My Favorite ROP Characters as Crystals
I needed something fun and low-stakes to keep my mind off Real Life Things, so here are the crystals I associate with some of my favorite Rings of Power characters 💎💍💎
Adar, Celebrimbor, Annatar, Mirdania, Elrond, Galadriel, & Gil-Galad under the cut.
🖤Adar🖤 Black Tourmaline
Black Tourmaline is one of the most protective crystals. Black Tourmaline has a Mohs hardness of 7-7.5 so it is fairly resistant to scratching. Unlike Uruks, you can put Black Tourmaline in the sun, but extreme heat or temperature changes can damage it. Metaphysically along with protection it is said to purify and transmute negative energy in the auric field and in the environment. Physically, it has high iron levels so it’s also highly magnetic, which tracks because regardless of how other characters feel about it, no one can ever seem to get out of being in close proximity to this Uruk. The downside of Black Tourmaline in my experience is that it can be a little too grounding on the root chakra so if you’re in a bad place it can pull you down even further until you’re just sort of obsessed over safety and physical resources. And if there’s one guy that needs to get out of his root chakra from time to time, it’s Adar. (If you’re giving me the side eye emoji guy 😏 thinking about Adar’s root chakra, you know very well that’s not what I meant. Also, let’s be friends.) It doesn’t help that I think Nenya looks a lot like raw Blue Celestite which has a very high vibe crown chakra energy, and the little time he had with it was enough to knock some clarity into Adar. So, yeah, he needs all the high vibes he can get, but he’s still more of a root guy overall. The rough/raw form of Black Tourmaline is pretty much Adar’s aesthetic to a T, honestly his sword has the same texture on parts of it. But the crystal can also be polished and is often made into jewelry so you can carry its protective properties with you. Which for someone who apparently hasn’t changed clothes in like three thousand years, a pendant would probably be right up his alley.
[I almost picked Black Obsidian for being volcanic glass and also possessing protective qualities, but it was just a lil too shiny so the tourmaline won.]
🍯Celebrimbor🍯 Honey Calcite
All right, look, calcite is one of the most common minerals on earth and it comes in such a variety of vibrant colors (a lot of them look like candy) that they have been given an array of trade names related to food, but when it comes to Honey Calcite (also called Golden or Amber calcite) I’ll give it a pass. You look at this crystal and it just looks like honey and all the connotations that come with it: sweet, comforting, warming, joyous. Which are all the things I think about when I see Celebrimbor. Metaphysically this crystal contains properties befitting the greatest of Elven smiths: creativity, willpower, strength, confidence, resilience, clarity, and focus, among others. Physically, though, you have to be more careful with Honey Calcite than other stones. It comes in at only a 3 on the Mohs scale of hardness so it is susceptible to scratching and you shouldn’t leave it in the sun or put it in water. It can be and is carved but only when handling it properly. Raw and tumbled forms of this crystal are pretty widely available. All in all I think this describes Celebrimbor pretty well. He’s open and eager to share, grow, and learn. He is strong, focused, and driven. But his weaknesses and fears over his familial past become flimsy containers for his principles and ideals. Rather than focus on his end though, I prefer to think of the time when he built up his craft. Those years no doubt were industrious, warm, joyous, and creative in many different ways. Things we all hope to return to when times of darkness fall upon us. Things that Celebrimbor’s story gives us.
✨Annatar✨ Pyrite
I know, I know, it’s kind of low hanging fruit to attribute literal FOOL’S GOLD to Annatar, but it’s much more than that. What other crystal befitting this “Lord of Gifts” other than the pinnacle of the nature museum gift shop that is pyrite. Like, yes, the other colorful smooth tumble stones are pretty and did stuff to my brain but those dense sparkling chunks of gold were what my eight-year-old heart truly longed for and I would have considered crimes at the very least of murder to score a piece or two. And I don’t know what it is about it but as an adult pyrite continues to be one of my favorite crystals. What’s even more, I for some inexplicable reason love tumbled pyrite. Have you seen tumbled pyrite? Not like the polite smooth sort, I’m talking the feral kind with all the little craters and pockets. I saw a meme once that said whoever was the first to decide to tumble pyrite should be sent to jail forever, and it’s true but also, I love it? My tumbled piece of pyrite is probably my favorite in my collection. How? Why? I don’t know. It attracts and it repels. It manifests and it reflects bad stuff away. All my chakras sing for this stupid stone. It’s so dense, it gives me everything I want. Pyrite is only a 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness which isn’t bad, but it’s not great, either. Pyrite does tend to be brittle and breaks/powders easily. Even though the natural cubic formations are largely the most interesting and prized, that hasn’t stopped people from carving the material into any and every shape you could want (even the audacity that is tumbled) or to use it in jewelry. So, yes, Annatar is pyrite. I hope someone lobs a piece of it at his head then kisses it better.
🤍Mirdania🤍 Stilbite
The energy of this crystal is compassionate and calming. Metaphysically it is used in matters of emotions and can help with understanding dreams. Overall it has a very nourishing and peaceful energy. Physically, Stilbite rates 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale of hardness, so it is a fairly soft stone. However it is not as fragile as some other softer crystals. You can briefly get it wet or place it in the sun without damaging it. Naturally the crystal forms in clusters but it can be polished. Clusters/raw pieces, tumbles, and palm stones are popular. The peachy, gleamy color of this crystal is what made me think of Mirdania at first, but the other properties of the stone fit well, too. She is nourishing in her relationships but she is strong and driven in her forge work. She stands up in her own way when she feels like action needs to be taken. Her softness isn’t fragile, necessarily, but it can be taken advantage of. Overall I think she values trust and harmony. This stone is also associated with wisdom, truth, and enlightenment. Certainly all traits Celebrimbor would have valued in her work as one of his smiths. And not to come off like Creepy Annatar, here, but I think this stone greatly matches her gentle beauty. **Does NOT reach out to touch her hair**
💙Elrond💙 Lazulite
Lazulite isn’t a super well known crystal, but polished pieces of it are fairly easy to find and purchase. It has a darker purply blue color with speckles that look like a dreamy, cloudy night sky. Physically it has a Mohs hardness rating of 5.5-6.5 so it can be susceptible to scratching from harder materials. Brief encounters with water or sunlight will not damage it. When I first got my piece of Lazulite, I immediately associated it with Elrond, because of the likeness it has to stars and the night sky, but also in the measured wisdom this crystal exudes. Metaphysically this stone holds psychic properties most apropos for an elf known for his gift of foresight: intuition, interdimensional communication, transformation, channeling, clairvoyance, and attunement to higher realms. Elrond always struck me as a very third eye centered person, overthinking things most of the time but only because his intuition about what it right tends to be met with backlash. The ability to fight and stand up for himself while also caring deeply for others has been quite a journey for him and is where his wisdom becomes derived from in his later years. That’s the vibe I get from Lazulite. The sky may be vast, dark, and overwhelming, but you can still look to it for guidance, light, and connecting the dots. You’ll get there in the end, and if you’re mindful, you can remain as kind as summer while you do it.
💛Galadriel💛 Rutilated Quartz / Rutile
Rutilated Quartz is when needle-like inclusions of goldish to copper hues grow within quartz. For Galadriel, I most associate the type that have gold inclusions within a super Clear Quartz. These are also known as Angel Hair Quartz, and even though it’s more of a LOTR thing in which she gifts Gimli her hair, I associate all eras of Galadriel with this crystal. As one of the most powerful and fair of all elves, Rutilated Quartz also looks magical and otherworldly, and high quality pieces are nothing short of dazzling. The sharp, spiky look of some more aggressive Rutile is a great illustration of her sharp skills as a warrior, and veer away from being particularly beautiful into being downright scary. Clear Quartz is said metaphysically to be an amplifier of energy, so it gives a boost and enhancement to any other crystal you pair it with. (Glares at Sauron.) Rutilated Quartz rates 6-7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, so it is pretty durable. The list of metaphysical properties of Rutilated Quartz is vast and far too many to list, but most of the properties are action oriented and powerful. This is not a restful crystal, this is a get !@#$ done and make things happen crystal. Even if that means sometimes you stab first and think later. Overall I think this crystal perfectly encapsulates the Lady of Light in all her complexities and brightness.
💜Gil-Galad💜Amethyst
Now before you get all uppity that I didn’t choose a gold or yellow crystal… 1) I’ll get to that… and 2) you cannot say he exudes solar plexus sunshine energy. He may be adorned in gold lamé but in his soul he is tired and he is Done.
First off, the reigning royalty of the crystal world is Amethyst. There’s probably not a single crystal collector who doesn’t have at least one piece of Amethyst. Every beginner set of tumbled stones includes an Amethyst because that’s The Law. Perhaps because of this, everyone thinks Amethyst can Do It All. And let’s be honest, Amethyst also thinks it can Do It All. It cannot, but it is still constantly thrown into every imaginable situation, and, well. She does her best (gender neutral). Metaphysically Amethyst is known for everything from physical healing to spiritual and psychic properties. On the Mohs scale, Amethyst comes in at a 7. One thing to be wary of is that Amethyst will fade in the sun. However, it is safe to put in water.
When Amethyst, typically purple in color, is heated it turns into Citrine which is yellow. (Very complementary as the opposite of purple on the color wheel is yellow.) Natural Citrine that has been mined from the ground tends to be a darker, brownish yellow, while Amethyst mined then heat-treated to turn into Citrine is a brighter more lemon looking yellow. There is a lot of heat-treated Citrine on the market. It’s not a “fake” crystal, but it was treated to change the color. If you want the natural “real” Citrine, you’ll have to do a little investigating but once you know what you’re looking for, it’s fairly easy to spot the difference. There are examples of crystals where part of the stone has turned into yellow Citrine but part of the stone remains purple Amethyst and these are called Ametrine.
All of that to say, our High King has had to be put under a lot of pressure to be this golden and under all that heat he’s just an overworked, broody but beautiful little gem. Still, he carries on. Highly coveted but does anyone really appreciate who he genuinely is?! Give this elf a break, a hug, a back rub. Just don’t leave him out in the sun for too long.
Thanks for reading. Obviously this is 💖just for fun💖 If you have any suggestions or additions, let us crystal bitch it up. Pretty rocks and pretty characters go so well together and I’d love to see other takes!

here's some Aventuri mecha! they also happen to be the first TFOCs i ever made but this is my favorite iteration of them. only time i've ever managed to give them a design i like. Mantis, Quetzal, and Seraph are a sibling trine from Jubilee, capital of Divinex, menial laborers under jurisdiction of the High Court. each of them have calcite inclusions (that's the patterning on their armor there), which is a less common but mundane mineral. they're on the petite side for Aventuri frames, so you aren't going to see mecha much thinner, lighter, or more delicate than this
Mantis is a loadbearer, which in Divinex means she's consigned to a form of state-run indentured servitude. since her sister is a cityspeaker, Mantis often works with her as a member of the construction and repair teams in Triumpha's underbelly. she has no other outlier power (beyond typical Aventuri extremophilia), but her surprising strength and durability are formidable enough. despite this, she is very meek, often simply trying to make herself small and unnoticed, deferring to others, remaining quiet and speaking only when spoken to. in a self-fulfilling mixture of nature and nurture, Divinexi culture has successfully convinced her that since she enjoys manual labor well enough and isn't confrontational at spark to speak out against anyone bossing her around or snubbing her for being a loadbearer, she clearly must be suited for and destined to never rise above this station, a civil servant to the end. she tries not to dwell on the grim daydreams of stealing someone's corpse and identity and running away to be someone else, a bloody, wistful fantasy for many loadbearers
Quetzal doesn't have a special sparktype or notably rare abilities. her outlier power is hard-light projections, from illusions to forcefields to flashbangs. her bright colors and brighter powers fit her personality very well, as she is the cheeriest and most optimistic of her sisters, more outgoing than the other two combined. but she's tired. more often than she'd like to admit, her smile is forced and her upbeat tone is false. it's hard not to be worn down when she, as the "normal" one in her trine, is responsible for negotiating her family's indenturement. the contract of civil servanthood for Mantis and Seraph could be overseen by someone else, but Quetzal stepped in to be their handler instead in the hopes that she could at least stick up for the two of them in a demanding society. her own job is as a personnel coordinator for many repair and maintenance teams beneath Jubilee, fitting for a people person like her, but trying to make sure everyone is treated well without favoring her own siblings unfairly is an emotional drain that is slowly killing her cheer
Seraph is a cityspeaker, and a damn good one too. she hid her aptitude for awhile, pretending that the hard-light projection outlier power she shares with Quetzal was her only ability, but it didn't last. now she uses that hard-light to display maps and diagrams of Triumpha's internals directly to repair crews, highlighting the areas the Titan feels worst and projecting maintenance plans for everyone to follow along. unlike her sisters, she is not resigned to her lot, but isn't rebellious about it. she is sullen, quiet, and bitter, preferring the company of half-lucid Triumpha to any others, sometimes even her family. she's hardly about to start a revolution, and doesn't even complain to her Titan or her fellow cityspeakers, but everyone definitely feels her cold shoulder on a good day, and heated, biting sarcasm on a bad one. her life will get better. her life will get better, not out of dutiful obedience like Mantis or strained optimism like Quetzal, but out of stubborn spite
here's sort of a rough example of their alt mode. they can transform their raptorial wing-arms to rotors in root mode, not unlike ES Twitch
#aventuras#tfoc#mantis#quetzal#seraph#transformers#transformers fan colony#macaddam#do u know how many years its been without a good design for them? this is a miracle#i had to start with these girls but now i have no idea who to do next. its an entire planet what person do i flesh out first#govt leaders? average joes? titans? idk#long post

Its been like 7 hours but im rock posting again cuz I gotta wait a week for my rocks to finish tumbling
SO
Next rocks going into the tumbler (most likely. Havent weighed them cuz the tumbler is occupied and ive never weighed JUST the tumbler so idk how many is too many til I get them in there)
First we got unakite!!! I'd never actually heard of unakite til I started digging into rock tumbling more but it is a metamorphic rock with epidote (the green parts) and feldspar (the pink) and sometimes colorless quartz which mine does appear to have stripes of
So at first I thought this might be fluorite. But! Its far too hard to be fluorite. Which leads me to believe its actually aventurine! Which...I dont think I have any of so thats cool
So this one im at a bit of a loss. Based on the website for the company my tumbler came from, I BELIEVE its peach aventurine. It has the same texture as the green aventurine. Its too hard to be calcite, which is what I thought it was initially.
Which leads to me to this guy! Yellow aventurine! I also thought this might be calcite but it is, again, far too hard. So ive gone from no aventurine to 3 pieces of aventurine all in different colors. (I may have a piece of polished aventurine but im not entirely sure)
I am going fully off wire jewelry dot com's collection of rough rocks that they sell. Based on the pictures I've found and according to the website, this is a moss agate! I've had several potential agates but none confirmed. Not as exciting as the standard stripey agates but still really cool!!
I am 90% sure this is garnet. I have some small garnet shards from that gem panning thing I did at silver dollar city as a kid that look exactly like this. I have one polished garnet already that a friend gave me a few years ago but im pretty excited for this one
Im pretty sure this is black tourmaline. Which i definitely don't have any other pieces of. (Sort of. I may have some smaller shards but I found them in the pea gravel in my backyard and I only have this rock to compare them to. You'll see them in a reblog in a bit)

A Rough Start
This drabble is preceded by Last Call and followed by Cutting Commentary.
Things didn't go well, at first. Not that you need my ability to have predicted that.
Everyone is assembled in the courtroom - witnesses, defendants, and legislacerators. Indrid Dynast, Ullane’s defense attorney, faces Artair Clonal, the prosecution.
She is short for her caste, a heavyset indigo with partially teal-dyed hair done up in a proper bun, and wears glasses. He is a cerulean with an unforgiving expression, a claymore gripped in one hand.
Halvir Urtyop is indeed there, along with various other medical staff who were present the night Calcit died. Yarrex is present, and Xrumon came along as well. Chimer Latrai sits grimly with her blueblood guard, Amdzah. Priori is, naturally, watching it all.
Indrid opens the debate by suggesting that the nanotechnology was hacked to cause Calcit’s death, rather than it being a mistake on the clinic’s part.
The prosecutor rolls his eyes at the pointless argument. Objection - this is irrelevant. The defense is already accused of criminal negligence, are they trying to defend themselves as being stupid enough to implant easily hacked medicinal robots into people?
Indrid raises that anyone can be hacked; technopaths exist, and even advanced technology such as nanites can be manipulated by those with the right tools. Sabotage can happen to anybody; there is no evidence to say the nanites were easily hacked, only that it was possibly done by the phone submitted as evidence.
The judge overrules the objection. It's a possibility worth consideration, it may mitigate the sentence if it turns out the machinery was indeed tampered with.
Ullane, silently conscious of the irony, nods encouragingly at Halvir to give his testimony about his patient’s demise as he is called to the stand.
He shrugs, stating calmly the time that he last checked on the victim and that he noted nothing out of the ordinary. He left, and some time later, the machinery in his room became alerted. When the crash team arrived, it was already too late.
Indrid, worried, inquires that he must have had a very good reason to leave during such a delicate situation, yes? When the patient was clearly brought in close to death?
"When I checked on him, he was recovering. I have at least 5 or 6 other patients to keep an eye on usually. I can't stand in his room the whole night watching him, anyone who's worked in a hospital understands that. That's why there are alarms on the machines, in case something goes wrong. Just a shame we couldn't make it in time." Halvir states.
Indrid, still concerned: But he was in very bad shape. When did you administer the healing nanites, if it was you who did it?
He shakes his head. "I didn't administer them. They're very specialized tech. Either Friday or Ullane would administer them usually, or one of the trolls trained on it. This time it was one of those nurses."
The prosecutor lazily swings a claymore the size of a small log through the air. "Cutting your own case apart in front of my eyes! Corr, you're makin' this too easy!"
Ullane as usual says nothing, but Friday is here too, looking upset.
Friday raises her hand. “May I speak?”
The judge fixes her with a death glare. "Are you in the stand? No. If you wish to speak, you will come forth to the stand once this cross-examination is finished."
Friday withers a bit and goes silent. Ullane sighs and looks apologetic.
Indrid presses on. "Apologies, your honor. I believe miss Lovely wished to confirm that it was indeed one of her trained trolls who administered the nanites.
Isn't it strange that no other patient at the clinic has ever suffered a malfunction like this, and they have also all had their nanites administered by the same two trolls? Indeed, no other patient that night did either. It was only Calcit Interg. What would either woman have to gain from the death of any patient, let alone a blueblood?
Additionally, Mr. Interg was...known to be considered difficult to deal with by several trolls he came to with his questions." She says delicately. "We have typed testimony from a friend of the deceased. It's quite possible he had enemies who wished him dead."
"So please, Mr. Urtyop. If you can remember anything unusual about that night - anything at all - please do tell us."
He thinks for a few moments. "It was a little weird that a blueblood got brought to us. I mean, we're a lowblood clinic, right? Then again, his condition was bad enough he probably wouldn't have survived trying to reach anywhere else."
Artair, the prosecutor, shakes his head as he rests his blade over his shoulder, but keeps quiet for now.
"His death came as a shock to all of us. I never knew those machines could do that to someone, but I guess it makes sense... I can't think of anything else unusual that night. Well. Unusual for the clinic at least."
At this, the prosecutor squints at him, but still refrains from breaking in.
Indrid, zeroing in on it too. "What do you mean? Not unusual for the clinic?"
"Uh..." he scratches the side of his head, looking a little uncomfortable. "Most of the staff are normal, yeah? But some of them are... not? There's that seadweller who didn't even understand the concept of money, the girl who seems to... well, it's hard to say, but she gives off the strangest vibe. And then there's those mannequins that keep wandering around everywhere. Is that even safe for a hospital?"
The judge frowns, while Artair permits himself a smirk.
"I don't mean any offense, but you have to admit, it's not a typical medical clinic. Even the head of security seems a little off his rocker."
She raises her eyebrows. "How so? Has Yarrex Fissaa caused any issues for you during the course of your work?"
"It's not like I knew the staff before I got hired." he replies, raising an eyebrow.
Artair speaks up. "Objection, how is this relevant to the case? The defense is clearly wasting our time, the head of security is not on trial for being strange."
Indrid, calmly. "I am asking whether Mr. Urtyop experienced anything out of the ordinary that night. If he can confirm he did not, then that will resolve this line of questioning."
"He already said so, or are ye deaf as well as daft?" Artair snorts, pacing behind his desk.
Halvir nods. "That's right. I said I didn't see anything unusual for the clinic that night. I saw the mannequins meandering around, but they always do that."
Indrid, unfazed. "Yet, the nanites going haywire are themselves extremely unusual, and there must have been a cause. Given what happened to Mr. Jegder as he informed miss Wistim when the sample was taken, it seems highly unlikely that there was no indication of Mr. Interg's decline until the moment it happened."
"If miss Lovely had wished to kill him herself, how could the reaction have been so delayed?"
Artair raises one incredulous, bushy eyebrow. "Are you mad now too, aye? We aren't arguing that your lot intended to kill anyone, just that you're stupid enough to put something that went haywire in someone and got 'em chewed up from the inside."
The judge shakes his head. "Objection sustained. Please return to questioning the witness about the events of the night in question, or turn him over for cross-examination."
Halvir speaks up: "Don't you have the machine readouts? They'll back up what I have to say. He was fine one minute. Then, well... you know what happened."
Indrid remains resolute. "Yet you essentially are arguing such a thing, because accusing the staff of such absurd and out of character idiocy is akin to accusing them of murder by supreme negligence. This has never happened before, so it makes no sense it would happen now, not when there was so much for them at stake.
Yes, we have the machine readouts, and no other readouts in the clinic's history show this kind of behavior. Nor did the patient seem to have any psiionic power or condition that would interfere with the nanites' work. With that said, the witness may now be cross-examined if he has nothing left to report." She nods encouragingly at Halvir.
Artair comes forward as Halvir shakes his head. "Mister Urtyop, you said nothing else was unusual about the night?"
The witness shakes his head, so Artair continues. "And is it true that nothing of this has happened before?"
"That's right. It's the first I've seen it ever happen."
Artair nods. "Aye, new technology be a fickle thing. Do you know how the machines work, then?"
He half shrugs. "Sort of. I know Miss Friday and miss Ullane have to work together on them. I think they're the ones who give them the commands to, you know, fix people. Initially, anyway. Obviously you can't mess with them once they're inside of someone."
Artair smirks, glancing back at the defense for a moment before looking to the witness. "Aye. So, once they're inside a body, they can't be controlled? Do you think that wise?"
Indrid raises her eyebrows. "It's a limitation of the technology, as all technology has while it's still being developed. There is a risk as there is with all surgical equipment; it was not always as refined as it is now, and used to be far more risky to operate on patients with.
Should we not use any advanced machinery at all because it carries some drawbacks? Especially when this is the first recorded case of a death? Far more trolls have died to improperly operated surgical technology, and that is still used in every hospital on Alternia."
Artair looks back again, unperturbed. "All good technology must be thoroughly tested. Nobody walks into a hospital signin' up to be a guinea pig for whatever bizarre machinations you've come up with. Supposin' this fella, eh?"
He looks back to Halvir. "How bad was his condition?"
"Critical. He was suffering extreme blood loss and had multiple contusions and penetrative injuries."
"Meaning?"
"Someone stabbed and beat him multiple times."
"Aye, so... would a blood transfusion and stitches have saved him too, in your medical opinion?"
Halvir hesitates, thinking for a few moments. "His brain was swelling from the beatings. We would have had to relieve pressure on that with surgery. I'm not sure he could have survived with his current blood loss. But..."
"But?"
"It... would have been possible. Especially given Miss Wistim's psionic abilities. The machines are partly made from them, but on her own, she can help heal the injured by speeding up their natural healing processes. In fact, just recently she performed a successful major surgery with them."
"There ye have it," Artair crows, jabbing the point of his sword into the air. "Could have saved him with alternative methods wi'out riskin' using something that chewed him up. All procedures carry risk, but must we pay with our lives in a most horrid fashion because testing them for this is too hard? It's one thing to risk a slip-up mid-surgery, another thing ta' risk chewing a man apart."
With a flourish, he produces the autopsy report and opens it up to read aloud. It describes, in gruesome detail, the extent of damage done to the man's insides. Most of his internal organs were dissolved or torn into shreds. His muscles and bones were being steadily chewed through as well. It is estimated he died within minutes in agonizing pain.
"Nay further questions. I believe that all speaks for itself."
A shocking, damning display, is it not? I admire Clonal, in a way. He is casteist and vicious, but he has a certain style.

𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐜𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐰𝐬𝐭 (𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲)
Author's notes:
The SD picrew has limited choices, so the pictures aren't very accurate to what I have in mind. :P
In true Xenon fashion, he has some insight into the prisoners' crimes and gives them nicknames based on their motive and/or feelings towards said crime. There's a clue of you guys~
Ichiro ♡
Other names:
Cuttlefish (Floyd)
Monsieur Unbothered (Rook)
Calcite (Slyvan)
Lover (Xenon)
Homeland: Rose Kingdom
Dorm: Ignihyde
Family:
Unnamed mother
Unnamed step-father
Appearance
Eye colour: Denim blue
Hair colour: Light brown
Race: Human
Uniform: He chooses not to wear makeup and his dorm vest. He wore his blazer at first, but lost it after a while and started wearing a cardigan instead. He also tried to wear his tie properly at first, but found it too tight and uncomfortable, so he wears it loose all the time now. He finds his red sneakers perfectly fine for a school setting and wears them everyday (even if some people might disapprove).
School information
School year: First
Class: 1C (Student no. 4)
Best subject: Art
Club: Board Game Club
Fun Facts
Dominant hand: Left
Likes: Keiko (his stuffed koala bear), watching clouds, lo-fi music
Dislikes: Being ignored, his stepfather, not being able to draw the picture in his head clearly
Favorite Food: Mochi
Least Favorite Food: Mint candy
Hobby: Drawing
Talents: Spacing out
Unique Magic: Pop up - He can conjure the non-living things he draws (up to scale) into existence for a short period of time. This works for food and drink as well, delicious taste and all.
Trivia
He keeps Keiko (stuffed koala) in his school bag, so he carries his bag with him wherever he goes.
He would have joined an art club if there was one, but there isn't one, and he isn't interested in founding a club.
He can't play board games that require strategy or critical thinking because they're so much work. As such, Idia is often his board game partner during club meetings.
Akane ♡
Other names:
Pufferfish (Floyd)
Mademoiselle Peppermint (Rook)
Garnet (Slyvan)
Justice (Xenon)
Homeland: Land of Pyroxene
Dorm: Savanaclaw
Family:
Unnamed father
Unnamed mother (diseased)
Appearance
Eye colour: Sienna brown
Hair colour: Robin egg blue
Race: Human
Uniform: She wears her signature red hairband and forgoes makeup. Her uniform is surprisingly put together despite her rough personality, ironed neatly with everything in its proper place. She chooses to wear a long skirt and knee-length black socks, keeping most of her skin covered because she claims she feels cold easily.
School information
School year: Second
Class: 2C (Student no. 16)
Best subject: Ancient Curses
Club: Horse-Riding Club
Fun Facts
Dominant hand: Right
Likes: Woolly sweaters, patterned band aids, helping others
Dislikes: Feeling cold, getting angry, people who look away
Favorite Food: Red bean bun
Least Favorite Food: Baguette
Hobby: Watching action movies
Talents: Tiptoeing (So quiet even she can't hear herself)
Unique Magic: Avert your eyes - She can direct the attention of her target to a (physical) thing. She can take on multiple targets at once. A small amount of blot accumulates every time she activates her UM and for every second she uses it.
Trivia
Her horse is a reddish-brown mare she named "Poppy".
She got angry the first time she met Floyd and reminded him of a pufferfish blowing itself out to look more menacing, hence the nickname. How ironic, since pufferfish are her favourite animals. Not that she would ever tell Floyd.
She gets along with Silver well because he's one of the few people she knows that don't piss her off. Well, its not like anyone could be on bad terms with someone as sincere and considerate as him.

My backstories and headcanons about the Hat Kiddos (TW: mentions of child abuse, neglect, child kidnapping and child murder, premeditated and otherwise
Caitlyn (1HT Hat Kid).
Had a pretty rough childhood, her parents divorced when she was about 78 years old (in her home planets time) her father would have custody and her mother would have to pay child support. Instead Caitlyn's mother took her and ran away to an isolated spacestation and turned possessive and abusive, eventually Caitlyn stole a recently decommisioned yacht to escape her mother's torment. Her father thinks she is dead and her mother went insane, what happened to her is unknown.
Caitlyn met Bow Kid in preschool and both became good friends and the two would keep in touch until Bow began her pilot training (around the same time Caitlyn was kidnapped) and the two would move on from each other, eventually though the two of them would reunite and they would have their shared adventure on Terra at the ages of 168 and 168 (about 12 in Terran years) respectively. Bow would perish in an interstellar accident delibrately caused by Caitlyn's mother known only as the incident of spaceport 63, Caitlyn wouldn't know of her passing until her final confrontation with 3HT Hat Kid.
Personality wise Caitlyn has mostly matured since her previous adventure and is now the alien equivelant of 15 Terran years old but has (mostly) retained her canon personality, she is experienced in her space faring shennanigans and engineering and is also really good at getting into places that she isn't allowed in.
Caitlyn is a selective mute and in her age she is more of a 'less talk and get shit done' then anything else. Caitlyn also has taken a liking to more brutish melee weapons like baseball bats, clubs and crowbars although guns are a close second as she can carry a ridiculous amount of weapons and ammunition on her person.
Caitlyn enjoys gaming, drawing, knitting and riding on her RUMBI unit, she also enjoys hitting the range and has a secret interest in military history. Caitlyn also has a Memory walking ability (explaining the events of Habboi's custom levels).
Caitlyn's physical strength is nearly immeasurable which not only allowed her to perform her feats of strength during her adventure but also allowed her to whoop Cavus so badly he became a black mass stuck in a jam jar in Caitlyn's freezer.
When the cataclysm occured it knocked Caitlyn's ship out of atmosphere and it ended up exploding due to the fuel tank cooking off (and unintentionally halting the Cataclysm), killing RUMBI and flinging Caitlyn and Jar Cavus out and into the sea where they washed up on the shore of 1HT Mafia Town (which had been melded with both the barbour and Calcite). Caitlyn was blamed for the whole Cataclysm and had to skulk around the area with gun and crowbar in hand before being pardoned by the town following a fight with the 2HT Mafia Boss and a corrupted Proto Kid.
Natalie (2HT Hat Kid) and Proto Kid.
Both have lived in Calcite for all their lives, Natalie was born to unknown parents and Proto was created by tim the CEO of Time in order to serve him. 2HT Bow moved here with her family when Natalie was around 3 and the two became good friends.
Natalie shares Caitlyn's personality minus a decently sized chunk of trauma.
Proto is more serious than Natalie and is generally more level headed, always focused on the task at hand. The problem is she is terrfied of failure since unlike Natalie she was created to serve, not born to a loving family.
It has been a few months since Tim's first meltdown.
Proto, Natalie and Bow had the privalidge of being under Tim's protection when the mafia arrived, 2HT Mustache Girl (or Mu) wasn't lucky. They also had the privalidge of being the first to explore 1HT Mafia Town just after the cataclysm.
Proto was the first to accuse Caitlyn of causing the cataclysm and caught up in pursuing her that Caitlyn literally shoved her in a freezer (alongside Jar Cavus) when the two forgave each other following Caitlyn's pardon.
Like Caitlyn, Natalie is really damn strong but like young Caitlyn her strength is RNG based. Proto isn't though and has to rely on agility.
Natalie does talk but is often shy, 2HT Bow does all the speaking and Proto never speaks (its kinda a 'I have no mouth and I must scream' situation).
3HT Hat Kid
her origins, real name and story are unknown but she is known to be 168 years old (or 12 in Terran years), meaning she shares Natalie's age. Unlike Natalie However 3HT Hat Kid is a huge piece of shit, forged by the world around her.
Singlehandedly abused the power of all the Time Pieces in order to make herself God, fuelled by years of repressed rage and anger she mashed three universes together and became a god in her quest to reset things to give herself a better life.
It is unknown how she ended up this way but due to 3HT Snatcher also surviving a rough guess can be made.
Following her defeat, 3HT Hat Kid layed low for a while before having the unfortunate exprience of encountering a certain thoroughly pissed off old Timeline keeper by the name of Lady Puella who proceeded to butcher the child in a manner so horrific that it would make death by Vita Carnis Harvester look tame in comparrision.
