The Rivaini amulet is an intricate paperweight on the corner of Solas' desk, and Cole is absent from the uppermost floor of the Herald's Rest.
It is not, Solas reminds himself, immediate cause for concern. There are any number of secluded corners in Skyhold where Compassion might come to rest—and since their return from Redcliffe, the sight of a pale boy in an overlarge hat has become much more memorable for the Inquisition's rank and file. He could descend the stairs and be given half a dozen places to look in the span of a minute.
Solas does not descend the stairs. He clasps his hands behind his back, studies the rays of afternoon light filtering through the dust covering the window panes, and allows the absence to settle.
The truth is that there is little he can say to Cole now, and less he can do for him. All he can do is hope, and hope that hope is enough. That the power of Varric's belief can ward off blood magic, and the Inquisitor—
"Solas?"
—the Inquisitor is coming up the stairs, her footsteps almost silent. She hesitates at the top, her right hand coming to rest on the railing beside her, and steps no closer. "It is you," Rosamund says, her voice going soft with surprise. "I thought—you don't usually—"
She presses her lips together, frowning briefly, before her words come out in order. "Were you looking for Cole?"
"I... yes." He hadn't thought himself visible from below; the Inquisitor's sudden appearance has caught him off-balance. "Have you seen him?"
"I think he..." Rosamund glances to the side for a moment. "He may be with Varric. He's been trying to teach him Wicked Grace again."
Solas is certain that is not what she originally meant to say, but the matter is not worth pressing. "I see. I won't interrupt, then."
Trevelyan nods, something troubled in her expression. It does not clear as Solas walks past her towards the door to the battlements, and the thought gives him pause a moment before he reaches to open it.
"Solas, can I—"
Rosamund looks just as taken aback by her outburst as Solas feels. She blinks at him, already beginning to instinctively shrink in on herself, before she takes a rallying breath to speak.
"Are you upset with me?"
The question immediately explains her behavior. It is also completely incomprehensible. He momentarily considers the possibility that she has participated in another round of mayhem with Sera and he is yet to discover the consequences—but they were just discussing Cole.
"Did you think I was?" Solas asks, carefully neutral.
Rosamund worries the fabric of her sleeve between her fingers, her bottom lip between her teeth. "I don’t know," she says at length, gaze fixed on the ground. "I know you were—are worried about Cole. That he might not be safe, without the amulet."
"That is no fault of yours."
"Isn't it?” She lets the question linger, lifting her eyes to meet Solas’ with unexpected steel. “We went to Redcliffe in order to find what was preventing the amulet from working, and came back no better off. I asked for your counsel and disregarded it. You would have every right to blame me.”
“Perhaps. But I do not. You did what you thought best at the time, Inquisitor. If you have come to regret the decision—”
"I don't," Rosamund immediately replies. "That isn’t what I… I couldn’t have—” She wraps her arms around herself as if anticipating the need for defense, the line of her shoulders drawn tight. Every part of her seems to want to flinch away, but she holds herself steady. "You said something, to Varric. About how we can't change our nature by wishing."
It takes Solas a moment to reorient, to send his memory further back. "Yes, I remember. It seems I was proven wrong."
"But you meant it, when you said it."
The only answer Solas can give is, "Yes," and the instant Rosamund tenses further he knows it was the wrong one.
She nods, seemingly to herself, and glances over to the wall. "Even if," she says slowly, deliberately, "it might not keep him safe, I couldn’t have told Cole not to—not to want. I couldn’t have said it didn’t matter. Or that it mattered less."
Solas understands every word, yet he can't shake the feeling that he is missing something. Trevelyan will not meet his gaze; she looks as if she wants nothing more than to flee back to the tavern's warmth below. Her fingers twist in the sleeve of her dress, nails digging in with such force Solas worries she may tear the fabric. The light through the window turns the brown of her hair to gold, sets the sunburst on her forehead ablaze, and the entire time Rosamund curls into herself as if determination alone will render her body invisible.
He pities her, sometimes, and envies her in others, and has no right to either feeling. For a moment, his chest is too tight with sympathy to speak.
Then he says, as gently as he dares, "It is not the same."
"I didn't say it was." Rosamund's voice is painfully small. "But it is. Similar. Isn't it?"
"Perhaps," he concedes, "in some ways. But the gulf between spirits and mortals is—" —is irrelevant. What she needs to hear from him is not more information about the Fade.
But there is no world in which he can explain himself to her. It has been an honor to come to know Rosamund for herself, and Cole may yet become fully of this world, or close enough to forget the distance.
Solas never will. It is thousands of years too late.
"I did not mean to diminish you, Inquisitor. Or to imply that I am not glad to know you as you are."
The apology is lackluster, if that is what it is. Rosamund relaxes, all the same, and looks at him with relief clear in her face.
"I know," she says, with more understanding than he is owed. "I didn't think you did, Solas, I only—it seemed to me a sad thing to believe."
The truth is rarely kind. Rosamund does not need Solas to tell her as much. "As I said, I was proven wrong in Cole's case. He is stronger than I gave him credit for."
"In Cole's case." There's faint amusement in her voice, but something melancholy in her eyes. "So you still think it true."
"I have found it to be true, more often than not." The sentiment feels too cold, left bare and alone. Solas sighs and makes his best attempt to soften it. "It was not simply wishing that made you who you are, Rosamund, or Cole. The wishing is easy. The work is more than most are willing to shoulder. Or, perhaps, able to endure."
"I suppose you have a point. But wishing for change is where it starts."
"And often," he adds, not without humor, "where it ends."
She smiles, conceding nothing. "If you believe it will be. It doesn't have to be." Then she pauses, tilts her head, considers him for a long moment. "We could interrupt, you know. Varric and Cole, I mean. I don't think they'd mind company."
The offer is easily given. It is impossible to take. He wishes—
"Another time, perhaps. I've kept you long enough, Inquisitor."
"Oh," Rosamund says. "Alright."
Her disappointment is as clear as it is gentle, and all the more unbearable for it. Solas carries it out of the tavern with him; he holds it as a precious, tender thing. It is, after all, exactly what he deserves.

i guess if i talk about caden's stealth nightmare i should talk about rhion's unavoidably public transition that is also increasingly intertwined with her being identified with andraste. (woag you two are the youngest and oldest siblings of the family AND you're narrative foils?) you always ask white girl to save you but who will save the white girl...!
(when she's come to terms with the I am a girl actually thing, i do think she kind of wants to pick a new name for herself but is really unsure about the change and also just chronically indecisive. andrea may be going too far with the andraste reference. failing that it would probably be after a past divine, and in the interests of some continuity i think she'd feel more comfortable with an r name like renata or rosamund. roz or rose as a nickname is very cute to me... rhea could work too. may stick with 'r' trevelyan for the time being as something neutral until eye decide.)
i do think public opinion on a tranquil inquisitor would be Mixed but hear me out: Is There Not Something about the miraculous nature of someone previously tranquil having her magic restored after being aided by andraste in the fade and also having the andrastian sunburst literally branded on her forehead. the habit of randomly weeping is kind of off-putting in person but that would go fucking hard in religious iconography. i think it is actually quite easy to transform her into a religious symbol! maybe initially somewhat fringe and counterculture, but increasingly popular as time goes on.
i dont really want to do another playthrough of inquisition so soon even if i did specifically install the 'kill all enemies button' mod so a hypothetical replay would be less of a pain . and anyway due to both the tranquility and the transition r's tenure as inquisitor exists a lot more in my mind than it ever could in game. Mostly i do just want to play through blackwall romance but i digress.
like, basically when r became tranquil at age 18 it was as much about the ability to stop having a lot of unpleasant and confusing feelings (grief over sean's death, increasing pain and conflict over her body and identity during the transition from adolescence into adulthood) as it was about her fear of her own magic/certainty she would fail the harrowing. in the intervening 15 years none of that got dealt with! it all just slams back into her full force but now she also needs to save the world. so it's quite messy for a while on like every possible level - at the beginning of the game she tends to have pretty weird mood swings from really intense feelings to complete dissociation, interspersed with the weeping that she can't really explain.
i don't have a very clear transition timeline for her... i just have this vision of vivienne saying something to r about the need to clean up into an appearance befitting the inquisitor and r (who has not thought about that at all for 15 years) unthinkingly going if anything i would want to look more like you... and then getting really embarrassed when viv laughs. getting 'mistaken' for a woman every now and then because she has long hair and dresses kind of ambiguously, prone to covering her face and wearing lot of layers and long flowy things, and that sticking with her. being super uncomfortable with formal (masculine) titles and preferring to be referred to by name.
i think r becomes fast friends with josephine and that's probably the most important relationship for her gender journey josie would be so sweet and supportive :). she eventually becomes friends with viv also though that's a more complicated journey. although the idea of her out in the field going 'don't you ever wish you had been born a girl so you could've been beautiful' to a party of like blackwall bull and varric and it's just. crickets. DOES amuse me. she's figuring it out!!
the connection to andraste does complicate the gender feelings though. like the top left doodle was a Bit but also can you imagine if jesus was a woman and you were a closeted tgirl and people kept comparing you to her. (and making portraits where you had straighter blonder hair so you looked more like the most common depictions of her. and incidentally maybe making you look more feminine in these depictions and you were like . What if i looked like that beautiful ambiguously gendered saint.) andraste went into weird trances and heard voices and here's the herald with the sunburst on her forehead and a mark on her hand who sometimes gets caught up in memories and feelings she's repressed for 15 years and starts weeping randomly staring off into nothing.
('herald of andraste' is something other people say about r that she kind of goes oh... sure i guess? i don't know if it's true but it seems to matter to other people, and if it was true, that would also be really reassuring to me, the idea that i was chosen for something and am not like. god's mistake. she doesn't have the confidence to say she's Not the herald, and she takes comfort in the idea, but it's not a title she actively seeks to affirm at all. < blissfully unaware of the implications)
everyone outside of the canon worldstate exists in various nebulous quantum states (the fact i'm not all that interested in making different hawkes exacerbates this), but i AM fond of r meeting so-min hawke who has always been recklessly unashamed of everything about her for better or worse, including her magic and her transness, and that being a formative relationship for her as well. However i have usually paired so-min hawke with sang tabris and the idea of r leaving either so-min or alistair in the fade simply makes me too sad so i need to do more worldstate wrangling. maybe ngayu brosca doesn't like anora enough that she puts an unhardened alistair on the throne alone idk. that fits her vibe
i think she's pretty much fully out and anyone who gives her shit gets killed with hammers offscreen by leliana during the vague time period in-between here lies the abyss and wicked eyes and wicked hearts. she's speedrunning her transition in like 4 months(? i wish someone could give a realistic sense of how much time would have to pass through travel alone in inquisition but i also don't wish that headache upon anybody) after 15 years of repression good for her. mostly this is because i think it would be cute for her to get to wear a dress and dance with blackwall at the winter palace. I'm a simple man
Tumblr media
well for now i'm still posting my da oc ramblings here at midnight. my dragon age white GIRL #feminism . and her cancelled wife who im still figuring out how to draw

Hey didn't you have a wip based around donkeyskin? I think that was you at least! If it is please tell us about your idea I'm insanely interested in hearing about it! If that wasn't you disregard this. 😅
It was me, yes! Unfortunately I haven't worked on it for years, so there's not much else to tell that isn't on the blog already :')
Here's the post with the most info, but there are some, uh, hypothetical changes I made in the years since. Hypothetical because I haven't been writing anything down lmao. Just vibes. (Ironically I've been more interested in the Swan Lake retelling set in the same world, except Rothbart is the good guy, because I'm obnoxious.)
General WIP notes/ideas under the cut. For those who are not familiar with the Donkeyskin fairy tale, (attempted) rape and incest cw!!
Rosamund Trevelyan, princess of [Kingdom]
Super hot, uncomfortably hot
Mom dies, warning her Dad's kinda fucked up and she should get outta there fast like super fast
Dad declares that nobody is good enough for Rosamund and that nobody else is hot enough for him, so marrying his daughter makes the most sense (a lot of monologues about him worrying about his legacy, Rosamund's """womb""" and being super racist against elves, which is what we in the business call foreshadowing)
Nobles are terrified he might kill them so they go along with it despite thinking it's very icky, but also they kinda get it because Rosamund is just so hot
Rosamund asks for a bunch of nigh-impossible magical stuff, which the King provides because he's just very desperate for incest
Including the "taming" of a hyperintelligent magical deer who Rosamund quietly convinces to help her and it takes pity on her and sticks around for her escape
King attempts to assault his daughter one night, and she escapes prematurely on her magical deer buddy, but is gravely wounded (lands on a wrought iron fence from a two-story drop) and expects to bleed out in the forest
Is found by a crusty old man who nurses her back to health
Not sure if he teaches Rosamund any magic or not, the initial idea was that she'd become a druid and have magic that required her to carve runes into her skin and "tarnishing" her pretty face with permanent scarring, but I felt that her not having magic + keeping her pretty face but being scared of showing it would be more in line with the themes I personally find interesting of the original fairy tale
Plus I like underpowered MCs now because it forces me to use my brain more
Old man dies a few months later, and Rosamund isn't a farmer and can't live on her own, but she's learned how to cook and clean and take care of the old man so she figures she can probably become a maid
She's more practical and survival-oriented so she doesn't mind working despite being royalty
She's so terrified of being found by her father that she looks for work in elf country, disguised as a random human farmer lady
Is quickly found by a quirky half-elf who needs an assistant
Quirky half-elf turns out to be the assistant to Prince Castan Oleander, who's the middle son out of three brothers, but elves don't follow human lines of succession so him being both sensible and popular compared to his brothers means he'll likely inherit the throne
(His younger brother Hyacinth is a beautiful pink-haired useless sack of shit and probably will be the Beast in my BatB/East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling)
Castan is suspicious of Rosamund but has more important shit to do than care about surprisingly eloquent human maids
The initial idea with the druid stuff was that Rosamund would convince Castan to teach her magic and that's how they'd develop a relationship, so I haven't been able to replace that with anything yet aside from maybe him finding her exploring the castle library and reading shit that's way beyond a farmer's knowledge and them bonding over their love of enunciating
Rosamund is very attracted to Castan because he's a hot, poisonous (literally) purple-haired elf, but she can also tell he has zero attraction to her plain alter ego
Plus the trauma and fear of getting sexual with a man
However, she can't help herself and sheds her disguise for a couple of balls, using the magic dress her father got her to show up as a mysterious noblewoman
Castan is immediately smitten with her
Rosamund doesn't know how she feels about this because on one hand yay! He finds me attractive! But on the other hand, duh, of course he does. He thinks I'm hotter as a personality-less mysterious woman than as a know-it-all strict and sensible bookworm, who has so much in common with him but isn't hot enough to tingle his jigglies
Castan forces the truth out eventually and is also very conflicted because Betrayal but also I Fucked Up So Hard Without Realizing but also The Two Most Interesting Women I've Met Are One And The Same! Jackpot!
Oh um and Rosamund's cover has just been blown, and in order to avoid war with [Kingdom] she must return home within a certain amount of time oh no the drama!!
Uuuh that's about it? It's kind of a simple story at its core but it's got some very heavy themes (despite my flippant summary) and a lot of things I'd need to get just right, hence why I haven't worked on it.
I do still love the characters (Rosamund is my most dignified and least girlbossy girlboss sad wet blorbo and I love her) and the fairytale and I want to write it eventually, but I also want to, ya know ... Do it Right.
Hope this satisfied your curiosity, Nonny! And thank you for asking! ^^

Get Into My OC - Anne
Tumblr media
(Faceclaim - Rosamund Pike)
Name: Anne Eliana Trevelyan
Nickname: Annie; Fletch (Varric’s nickname for her)
Age: 24 at the beginning of Inquisition (her story will begin after Trespasser, so she’ll be 27/28 by that point)
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Orientation: Heterosexual
Profession: Former Inquisitor/Herald of Andraste
Background: The youngest sibling of Bann Aedan Trevelyan of Ostwick, Anne was always something of an outsider in her family even before her father’s death when she was five. Her elder brother, resentful of his responsibility to have his youngest siblings raised right, was quick to send her to the Chantry for her education, no doubt in the hope that she would take orders and no longer be any trouble. While her next brothers did, indeed, take orders, Anne did not, and at the age of twenty, was sent back to Ostwick. Her insistence on maintaining close ties with the one mage among their sibling group alienated her from her eldest brother, and as her other sisters were married off, she found herself increasingly shunned by her family. In quiet retaliation, she took up the bow and sword, and began hiring herself out as protection to merchants traveling the roads between Ostwick itself and the Circle, using that as an excuse to visit even more frequently with Liesl, her mage sister. When the mage-templar conflict broke out and reached Ostwick, she was at the Circle Tower, and witnessed the trouble that overtook them, risking her own life to guide her sister and a few others to an enclave of apostate mages passing through on their way to Ferelden.
When Bann Trevelyan was asked to stand witness at the Conclave of the proceedings there, he took the opportunity to send Anne as far away as possible, appointing her in his stead. This, of course, is how she ended up as the Herald of Andraste and the Inquisitor. She created deep friendships with all her inner circle at Skyhold, proving her loyalty to those friendships without needing to be asked many times over. She is a quiet person, but not without humor, fierce in her friendships and passionate about her decisions. The revelation of Solas’ identity, culpability in the events that put her where she is, and the loss of her arm have all taken a toll on her disposition - after the Exalted Council, what strikes people most strongly about her is the air of quiet sadness she carries close.
Inquisition: Allied with the mages; allied with the Wardens; allowed Florianne to murder Celene, and put Gaspard on the throne of Orlais; saved the Chargers; promised Blackwall to the Wardens; supported Cullen’s decision to quit lyrium; encouraged Cassandra to gather and reform the Seekers; allowed Varric to help Cole become more human; allowed Morrigan to drink from the Well; Vivienne became Divine; disbanded the Inquisition; hopes to redeem Solas (but knows she can’t do it herself).
PHYSICAL
Body type: Slender, athletic, toned
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde; long, tends to waves and curls if unbound; most often worn in a chignon twist off her face and neck
Skin: Pinky-pale, light scattering of freckles over her nose and shoulders, otherwise burns easily in strong sunshine
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 148 lbs
Distinguishing Marks: Left arm amputated above the elbow, scarred with silver-gray track marks that fade before they reach her shoulder
SKILLS (S.P.E.C.I.A.L + M)
Strength: 6/10. Long convalescence following the loss of her arm has sapped her strength.
Perception: 8/10. She retains her trained senses, as well as her ability to read the emotions of a room full of people.
Endurance: 7/10. Again, her long recovery following the Exalted Council has weakened her physical stamina; mentally, she is stronger.
Charisma: 7/10. Quiet she might be, but when she speaks, most people listen.
Intelligence: 9/10. She was well educated, and has never stopped learning.
Agility: 7/10. Another trait that has been diminished following the removal of the Anchor, but she can still move with reasonable agility.
Luck: 5/10. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s fairly balanced, both ways.
Magic: 1/10. Despite the fact that she is no mage, living with the Anchor for so long has left her with the ability to shape the Fade to her will when she dreams.
LIKES
Colors: Pinks, yellows, pale greens
Smells: Baking bread, incense, Crystal Grace
Food: Mashed potatoes with garlic and butter; apple pie
Fruit: Raspberries
Drinks: Spiced warm milk
Alcoholic drinks: Wine, preferably white
OTHER
Smoke: Never
Drugs: Only medicinally
Travel: A fine horsewoman, well able to ride pretty much any mount in the Inquisition stables, and particularly attached to her Mountain Dracolisk
Want to know more about her? Go ahead and ask! My inbox is always open!

would you like to elaborate on your rosamund/josie thoughts…
yeas absolutely. i played through josie's romance recently with ga-kei (NOT CANONICAL i was fucking around trying out the multiple romance mod and was like. i need to see her romance once) and it's so cute. roz's canonical li is blackwall but she has two hands!!!
i feel like josephine's romance develops pretty naturally from becoming friends with her it's very sweet to me... and like. rosamund is having a fucking terrible time as herald of andraste/inquisitor at the beginning of the game. she just started experiencing emotions again for the first time in 15 years she's constantly overwhelmed and her body largely reacts by crying, sometimes even when she doesn't even think she's sad, it just happens. nobody knows how to talk to her because they don't know how to treat someone with a tranquil brand like a person, even when people view her positively it's as a religious symbol not as a human being.
josephine is the first person in the inquisition that rosamund feels genuinely welcomed by and able to trust and rely on (before vivienne joins. Sidebar i am really fond of trans woman vivienne headcanon i think it adds a lot to her character in my mind but that's a wholly unrelated tangent). i don't think roz can really put a label on her feelings towards josephine other than she likes her so intensely she feels kind of guilty about it. she's incredibly grateful to her, she thinks josephine deserves to be cared for like she cares for everybody else. she thinks she's the most beautiful woman in the world and she wishes she could look like that. and josie (vivienne also but this is again. a separate tangent.) is hugely influential in roz accepting herself as a woman and gaining the courage and confidence to transition.
it would not really make sense for leliana to give roz a shovel talk LOL or at least not one quite as... harsh? as she does in-game. though i think it would be funny for leliana to more delicately try to ask what's going on with josie and for rosamund to go what? i'm not flirting with her. am i flirting with her?? wait, do i have feelings for her????? and then an unspecified amount of time later this trembling wet cat of a woman is facing down an antivan nobleman in a duel for josie's hand (mage) (does not know how to swordfight)

rosamund trevelyan: About a week into my transition I had this dream where I awoke naked in this enormous ocean of wheat. Fully transitioned, hips, tits, hair, the whole nine and then spent the entire dream being followed around by an enormous black wolf with mange that had six eyes
