I Fucked Us Up but Maybe I Can Fix Us Part 2

He’s only got 2 hours left on his shift when he gets called into Captain Cooper’s office. He feels like he’s being sent in front of the firing squad as he passes all his new coworkers and hears their “oooohhhs” and singsonged “someone’s in troubles.”

“Deluca, shut the door and sit down we need to talk,” Captain Cooper says gesturing towards the chair in front of his desk. “It’s about this morning and why you were late for work. You’ve worked here 6 months and you’ve never called in or been late.”

“I stopped to get coffee this morning and I saw an ex of mine out on a date. I think he saw me because he immediately started making out with his date,” Sal says not noticing his slip of tongue. “I don’t know it’s only been a year and somehow someone else has ridden in and stolen his heart.”

“He?,” Cooper asks. “Absolutely no judgement whatsoever because what you do in your personal life isn’t any of my concern.”

“Yeah my best friend,” he answers with pride. He was damn proud of Tommy even if he had broken his heart when he got drunk and fucked them to hell. Tommy was still the love of his life but he didn’t know how to explain that.

He can see Cooper is mulling over something and braces himself for whatever it is.

“Deluca, do you still love him? And before you scoff, I’m serious. Do you still love him enough to go talk to him about it and maybe get some closure?”

“I do. But I fucked us up so badly I don’t know that he’d even listen to what I have to say anyway.”

“Go talk to him anyway. Do it for yourself if nothing else.”

“Cap I hope you’re right about this. I’ll try to get him to talk to me this afternoon after work.”

“Or you could leave now and make him listen to you, Deluca. Go get your man back and I don’t wanna see you around here until you’ve talked to him.”

“Alright I’ll see you Friday then, Cap.”

“Friday and not a minute sooner, Sal,” Cooper shouts after him as he sprints out.

He’d rushed out of the office and gone straight to his car not even taking the time to change. He’s halfway to Tommy’s before he comes to the realization that there’s a chance that Tommy won’t answer the door if he knows it’s him but he’s determined to make him listen even if it kills them both.

The closer he gets to Tommy’s, the more terrified he is that Tommy won’t give him a chance to explain. He doesn’t know if he’s willing to give them up but he is confident enough to say that if Tommy asks him to leave he will.

When he pulls up he doesn’t have the chance to psyche himself out any longer because Tommy’s standing in the driveway washing his 1970 Mustang Mach 1. He knows that Tommy knows he’s there, the man had looked over his shoulder at him before he’d even shut his truck off.

Now seeing the old girl sitting there with Tommy leaned over the hood wiping the windshield down, he feels heat pooling in his veins. The things that they’d done in and on that car since Tommy’d bought it years before. The weekends off he’d spent cruising the coast with Tommy’s hand in his. They’re first kiss was in Tommy’s garage under the hood, he’d only meant to wipe the grease off his best friend’s face and instead he seized the opportunity to run his thumbs across Tommy’s cheeks before he pulled him into a kiss.

He’s pulled from his reverie by someone tapping on his window and he’s startled to see Tommy standing there. The man backs up enough he can get out and suddenly they’re standing face to face for the first time in a year. He can see the bags under Tommy’s eyes and how much older he looks like the last year has been spent not sleeping or taking care of himself.

“Sal, whatever you’re here to say let’s go inside before you say it. I’m not really in the mood to have Mrs. Valentine and her book club gossiping about us again,” Tommy says wearily.

“By all means then let’s go in and catch up,” Sal gestures for Tommy to lead the way. As he follows behind he can’t help but watch Tommy’s ass.

“Deluca whatever you’re doing or thinking about doing don’t even try it,” Tommy growls before he’s walking in the door and straight over to his couch.

“Tommy I know you hate me and by all means keep hating me if you want but please let me explain,” Sal pleads sitting the edge of the couch cushion. He wants to slide over and pull Tommy into his arms but he knows they aren’t like that anymore. “I’ll leave now if you want me to but I hope you’ll hear me out.”

“You’ve got 5 minutes Sal,” Tommy answers rolling his eyes. “I’ve got plans tonight and I refuse to be late because you decided to drag your feet and waste my time.”

“I fucked up I’ll admit that, but I didn’t mean for you to get caught up in it like y-,” Sal starts before he gets interrupted by Tommy’s scoff.

“Yeah you fucked up alright,” Tommy snaps. “I could’ve fucking lost you and you didn’t even care. I loved you and you broke my heart.”

“Hold on a second, Thomas. You said I had 5 minutes to explain myself so stop interrupting me. I fucked up and I’ve regretted everyday since I decided to drive home drunk. I went to that bar just to have a drink to blow off some steam after a bad shift. I didn’t wanna come home in a bad mood and take it out on you. Not after our shifts had been conflicting for weeks and somehow one beer became another and another and before I realized it I was drunk…, and you told me to leave and now we’re here,” Sal spits out all in a single breath.

“Sal, I wasn’t pissed then and I’m not pissed now about you going out for a drink after work. I was pissed because you drove drunk instead of calling me to come get you. I texted you multiple times to see where you were and you were radio silent,” Tommy says wiping at the tears running down his face. “I sat here for hours thinking someone cop or Chief Richards was gonna come knock on the door to tell me that the love of my life was dead or seriously injured. You showed up drunk and I was relieved to see you were still alive but also pissed.”

“I’m sorry, Tommy. You deserved better than me back then and you still do if we’re being honest. Now I’ll get outta here you can get ready for your night out since I’ve taken more than 5 minutes of your time. We’ll have to get together sometime and you’ll have to tell me about your new guy, Kinard.”

“I don’t have a new guy, Sal. I saw you walk in this morning and I panicked so I asked Jordan the new barista if he could pretend to be my new boyfriend until you left. I didn’t want it to look like I was still pining after you. I guess it looked pretty dumb, huh,” Tommy asks looking down at his hands where he’s been twisting his fingers.

“Nah, I got jealous and was late for work this morning which I’m pretty sure Captain Cooper’s gonna punish me at some point. I’ll admit that I was upset at the prospect of you being in love with someone new but you also deserve all the happiness life can give you Thomas,” Sal reassures scooting close enough he can take ahold of Tommy’s hands and begin to massage away the cramps. “Hey Tommy, would it okay if said I wanted a goodbye kiss?”

“Who needs a goodbye kiss when we could have a welcome home, I’ve missed you kiss?”’

He doesn’t even bother to verbally answer instead reaching up to pull Tommy into a kiss. Sal doesn’t know how long they sit there making out before he remembers Tommy saying something about plans. “I’ll come back tomorrow and we can hang out and catch up on everything we’ve missed and you can go get ready to go out like you planned.”

“Salvatore, crazy bastard my “plans” tonight were to curl up on the couch with bowl of popcorn and Lovely, Actually. If you wanna make you could stay and watch it with me?”

“I’d love to Tommy.”

They weren’t perfect and never would be but having Tommy Kinard curled up against him was as close to heaven as he wanted to get.

M3GAN (2023)

Beneath the dark laughs, memorable scenes and the sort of scares you expect from a killer robot doll, M3GAN actually has some surprisingly poignant moments. While you might recognize the overall plot, this movie by Gerard Johnstone is not just “another one of those”. It’s loads of fun. With strong performances, great special effects and smart satirical jabs throughout, this film effortlessly wins you over.

After surviving the car accident that killed her parents, eight-year-old Cady (Violet McGraw) is sent to live with her aunt, Gemma (Allison Williams). Struggling to bond with her niece and eager to prove to her boss that the funds she’s been diverting towards her pet project haven’t been wasted, she puts the finishing touches on M3GAN (pronounced “Megan”), a robot doll. The child-sized gynoid bonds with Cady and soon the two become inseparable - much to the delight of Gemma’s co-workers - but is the seemingly perfect companion too good to be true?

M3GAN begins strongly by showing us the kind of toy M3GAN will be competing against: an ugly, Furby-like creature that poops a lot. It’s juvenile, but that’s the point. You take one look at that thing and you understand why kids would love it. You also know that their parents will curse whoever bought the electronic pet. Compared to M3GAN, it’s as sophisticated as a pail of sea monkeys. The doll (played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis) is every parent’s dream come true. Megan helps Cady develop good habits (like washing her hands and flushing after using the toilet), is a fountain of information that can help her owner with her homework, recognizes emotions and responds to them accordingly. One of the film’s best scenes is a pitch to the Funki toy company’s investors. You think the scene is going one way and it goes in a completely different direction. It’s shockingly emotional.

For a second, you think “Every child should have one of these”, and then you remember all the sinister traits M3GAN has been developing. While this is a film about a domestic robot that eventually develops an unhealthy obsession with its owner and rebels against its creator, it’s also a commentary on children and screens. M3GAN makes taking care of Cady so much easier for Gemma but at the end of the day, she isn’t real; when M3GAN's perfect, it’s too perfect. With only circuits and switches to guide her actions, she’s unable to make the same moral choices as a person. The topic of parenting and which style is best for children comes up several times - often with ironic twists. An example is a scene where Gemma meets the mother of a nasty boy named Brandon. I didn’t expect this sort of movie to make me pause and think about much besides “How awful it would be to die like that” but writer Akela Cooper (working off of a story she co-wrote with James Wan) brings a lot to what could have been an ultimately forgettable but fun romp.

One of the best things about M3GAN is that it knows exactly what kind of movie it is. There are many silly scenes that embrace the outlandish premise. That doesn’t mean it can’t have great characters brought to life by terrific performances - Allison Williams, in particular, is a standout. She gives so much humanity to a character that you could easily dislike because she sort of pawns off her niece to an A.I. that eventually learns to kill. Instead, you come to fully sympathize with her. The violence and gore are delightfully ghoulish. The action scenes are surprisingly well done - I wasn't surprised to hear that many who worked on Malignant also worked on this picture.

I've repeatedly said that M3GAN surprised me and it's worth saying again; I expected to have a good time but I did not expect to love it as much as I did. (April 26, 2023)

thinking very deeply about how Xavier is Jason coded with Ronnie personality and Dev is just Eliza if she DID want to be involved with family business. Like Eliza is gonna see them as a couple and go "oh... it was always both Ronnie and Jason in any lifetime"

This is so very true. Because everything is very interconnected in our verse.

And maybe a bit of insecurities come out for Ronnie, like he only sees Xavier's coolness at first. Not the flipping nerdiness there too.

But Eliza sees it. And it makes her feel better somehow that while she could always wonder what if she had picked Jason over Ronnie, she knows that that kinda choice doesn't matter as long as everyone ends up happy. Especially Megan.

MUSIC TIME! Gonna go ahead and use this to bring it to the attention to any Alice Cooper or Ronnie James Dio fans that weren’t aware Dio covered Alice Cooper’s Welcome to My Nightmare in this tribute album and personally I think it’s fantastic!

That “if the world was ending you’d come over, right?” song has nothing, NOTHING, on Riverdale cast’s rendition of The End of the World. Same concept, but one song has the vastly superior execution. After seasons of questionable musical performances on Riverdale, they suddenly bring out this unbelievable undeniable emotionally resonant BANGER that is never mentioned again after Bailey’s comet descends upon them… beautiful. Riveting, even.
