background: some people claim that “romance is boring” by los campesinos is an aromantic song due to the title and repeated lyric “romance is boring”, and this reading takes no account of the larger song or lyrics and is entirely an incomplete interpretation. i would also add that it is nowhere near the most aromantic song los campesinos ever wrote.

thesis: i just sighed. i just sighed, just so you know is the most aromantic song los campesinos ever wrote.

elaboration: it is, of course, strange to position a love song in which the speaker laments a romantic failure an aromantic song, however there are several idiosyncrasies within the text that lead me to this interpretation. the speaker demonstrates a level of derision for his love interest’s boyfriend, seemingly misunderstanding the entire concept of romantic attraction by framing the girl as something to be “won over”, lamenting the failure of pretty prose at doing such a thing, glossing entirely over the fact that a gift of love poems from your significant other is very different from love poetry of someone you’re not attracted to. these lyrics would almost lead to interpreting the speaker as an incel, however the song also demonstrates a level of self awareness and a willingness to step away from the object of desire that leads further from this reading.

the speaker also, notably, expresses desire for intimacy and closeness rather than a satisfaction of romantic or sexual needs. the song never describes why the object of desire is desirable, no dedications to the girl’s beauty or sexual appeal. the chorus’ pleading sentiment is “let me be the one that keeps tracks of the moles on your back”, a desire for companionship and care rather than a direct desire for romance or sex. the jealousy towards the boyfriend is ameliorated by knowledge of “keeping him on his toes”, expressions of care and ensuring that the actual closest companion of the romantic interest is delivering a sufficient amount of love to her.

the romantic gestures described are all indirect and dedicated to the poetry in the gestures, marriage proposals and eulogies being delivered to the girl through the hope that she will see them by chance, done for the sake of expressing the speaker’s feelings rather than for the sake of communication and actual flirting. the mourning is dedicated to the fact that the speaker will never be able to care for the object of his affections in the intimate and close way he desires.

the combination of these factors: misunderstanding of romantic attraction, never expressing an attraction beyond a desire for care and intimacy, the understanding that the speaker’s feelings cannot fit into the situation neatly and instead have to fumble around the edges, leads me to read this as an aromantic person struggling with his desire for closeness, intimacy and companionship in a world in which that position is filled by a romantic partner. he identifies this desire as romance, despite not grasping the idea of romantic attraction. he understands the closeness he wishes for is unwanted by the object of his wishes, and cares about her enough despite that to keep her in his life instead of stepping away, grappling with any way of expression of these feelings in a way that doesn’t mess up the relationship they do have.

it is a song of aromantic yearning for love in a world which synonymises love with romance.
