What is it that the Rat Grinders actually want exactly? Or at least, what does Kipperlilly want since she's the one we know the most about.
At the top of the season it seemed like she wanted to Be The Best at school and Be Recognized in a very Tracy Flick/Sara Berry kind of way and was just going to crazy lengths to get there because this is a world where you help a dragon kidnap girls so you can be Prom Queen and life goes on. But now we know that the Rat Grinders are a part of Porter's larger plan and one of the major steps of that plan is completely abolishing Aguefort as an institution.
It's clear what Porter gets out of this. He gets to be a god and he gets to continue his imperialistic family legacy. And I would maybe get what Kipperlilly would get out of this is she were the Cleric/Paladin of the plan. She'd get to be the new god's champion, like she was gushing to Lucy. That's maybe worth something to an achievement hunting, Type A individual.
But she's not gonna get to be the best student at Aguefort if Aguefort doesn't exist anymore. Hell, Elmville won't really exist anymore. Is Porter planning on opening a new Adventuring School in Rage Elmville and she gets to be the god Principal's pet? Does she think he's gonna make things "fair" for her somehow? How? Retroactively killing her parents? Does she want to use the powers she cheesed from the easy XP he drip fed her to be a renown adventurer? Kinda hard to pull that off when everyone knows you were part of the plan that doomed the town. Maybe she thought they were going to get away with it without being implicated? Does she literally not want anything other than a chance to kill the Bad Kids? Or even pettier, to just to be stronger than Riz? Is that worth it to her? To damn the whole town just so she can say that she beat Riz once? Did she want something concrete at one point but at this point she's just lost in the sauce and doing whatever the next task is without knowing what she'd even do with a victory if she got it? Did she already get what she wanted in the free XP and now she's just paying her end of the bargain?
I'm just very unsure about what her version of a happy ending is here.
#dimension 20#d20#fantasy high#kipperlilly copperkettle#i was gonna save this for a recap but I may do the last 2 recaps put together bc they're battle eps#so we'll see#if porter was literally just like do you want a chance to kill her rivals and they were like boy do I! that'd be nuts#I have to assume there was more to it than that but idk man#even if the RG's have rage stars I think that means they're influenced not mind controlled puppets#I assume she has goals and desires#I just have no idea what they could be at this point in the story#and if it's just to be stronger then woof#crazy reason to damn your town to being rage city#in her mind what is her place in the endgame?#and what would be 'fair' to her?#even before she ended up in this plot what did she want that she wasn't getting?#like in her world what should they do to compensate for her not having a dead dad?#curve her grade?#kill her dad?#like practically what did she want?#i think it would have made sense if kipperlilly was doing a kind of syndrome thing#making up threats to defeat#inventing her own plot hooks#but this plan doesn't seem very mastermind rogue of her#I guess blind rage isn't great for evil plans#also for that matter what's up with jace

8 dec 2023 pirates smp lore recap
aka im distraught
obvious spoiler + roleplay disclaimers as per usual
cw: death, fire, self-sacrifice
acho + scott
scott finds acho's last note and gold and decides to go after star
he tracks down acho's location at the cave
the brothers reunite and find some old city ruins further into the cavern, but can't find any of the lost treasure
they sit down and acho talks about stars time away from the isles, trying to find a home before running into and joining the rogue crew
star made friends and found a home in one of those rogues, mahara
they were trying to track down kishi's treasure, or lack thereof as they found, in the middle of a storm when mahara insisted to keep going but acho thought it was too risky
mahara said that he had nothing holding him back as a rogue and in a moment of anger, told acho to just go back to stars "perfect family" on the isles
acho left on their tattered boat and meager supplies, and never saw mahara again
with the recap over, scott finds a hidden room near the roof of the cave
inside the hidden room is spike pit and a note, saying that only one of them can escape alive
scott is fully prepared to sacrifice himself and makes a grand ol' speech to drive it in… but then acho pushes him out of the way at the last second, falling into the spike pit in the process
acho recalls one last memory with mahara and talks to the stars/mahara one last time in the afterlife, which mahara is finally able to respond to
meanwhile, 1 week after all that went down, scott holds a small funeral at the nightingale base and adopts dipper
eret
spends the stream finishing xeir star fort and logs out; no lore and not showing up for the finale
martyn
martyn does everything he can to recharge the sunset stone and gain doc's attention from the datastream
eventually, he resorts to climbing into the volcano at the heart of the isles, and rigging ros' castle to blow with tnt in her attic and ringing the town bell as a distraction
martyn ends up finding the loot shard inside the volcano
he gives the sunset stone back to the sun god in exchange for help destroying the loot shard
since doing so is will deplete their entire power (which will then take at least a couple of centuries to recharge), the sun god makes martyn promise to keep the other pirates safe; martyn claims to be crossing two fingers behind his back for this
the volcano erupts as the loot shard is destroyed; martyn lands in the ocean and survives, but it's still radio silence on doc's end
ros
ros holds a slumber party with water, shep, the sun god, and several of the npcs
they are interrupted by martyn ringing the bell in town, where ros and water rush to check if anything is going down
after a visit to the casino, ros finds that her castle has burnt down while she was away, and water reveals she found tnt in the attic that presumably blew up, igniting the wooden parts of the castle
ros is in denial of all this and decides to just go back to bed and think about it another time
conclusion
scott tracks down acho in the kishi quest, acho backstory drop
only 1 brother can make it out of the quest alive. acho dies trying to stop scott from sacrificing himself
martyn finds the loot shard in the volcano and convinces the sun god to help him destroy it in exchange for giving the sunset stone back
the volcano erupts on the island as a result but martyn still cannot contact doc in the datastream
ros' castle burns down after her slumber party because martyn rigged tnt to blow there while looking for the loot shard

The entity, affectionately called the “Patron”, assigns often vague tasks to the group with an enigmatic greater goal. Will the selfish intentions of the individuals get in the way of progress, or will they come together for success?
Will it be worth it?

Unlike Hoid Þáme saw Karthor as a dumb baby brother, seeing as he was a prince of sorts being the son of a guild leader. He frustrated her but not in a spiteful way, just as a dumbass being dumb and she genuinely cared for him.

DM: Yeah, so there's the ledger book that's open on the desk and there's this map that's sort of set aside somewhere. Tark (OOC): [in chat] check for traps Hunt: Alright, I put the map in the Bag of Holding. DM: And then you find a lot of other trinkets and things like that, you find a chest of these amethysts, you know the raw amethysts and things like that. Moriarty (OOC): Hunt, you gotta pull back. You gotta resist. Hunt (OOC): Oh but the temptation is there though! Tark (OOC): Please take one. You know you wanna. Hunt (OOC): Oh I really do wanna. Moriarty (OOC): L-Listen, I would much rather you steal the entire ledger. Tark (OOC): Yeah, that is true. DM: It is up to you Hunt. Tark (OOC): None of us are here. DM: If you're quick enough, you can get both. No one else is there, you can imagine what your friends would say to you, in the end. Marigold (OOC): Do both! Do it! Do it! Hunt: I'm gonna pocket the ledger and I'm gonna take two amethysts. DM: Okay. Moriarty (OOC): Oh my god. DM: Easily enough, it is a pretty full chest, so yeah. Marigold (OOC): Two shinies. DM: So you take the ledger, you close it, it's open on this desk. Hunt: Hmm. DM: It's like open on top of a table. Hunt: Is there any other book-like object that I can put it in its place so that at first glance it's gonna look like it's still there? DM: There are lots of books, there's a small shelf that have a couple books on them. Hunt: Okay, I'm gonna find one that matches similar to the ledger and just open it and place it where the ledger used to be. DM: Okay yeah, can easily do that. Looks to be boring thing about, it's a herbology book and you just crack it and leave it. It's got pretty much the same bindings so and you're able to, I'm gonna have one more stealth check as you leave and I'm gonna have everybody else do one more stealth check as they're waiting for Hunt. Hunt: *rolls* Okay. Nathaniel: Is that still with advantage? DM: Yes 'cause you are still invisible and technically you are still within Pass Without Trace? Tark (OOC): yes. DM: 'Kay. Tark (OOC): As long as an hour hasn't... DM: Right, so you do get +10 and the advantage. Tark: [in chat] 25 Hunt: 32 DM: Jesus Christ. Tark (OOC): God damnit. I'm really thankful for the advantage though because I'm, i would not, this would not be good.

February 2024 Reading Recap
Thank goodness this year is a leap year, as that meant an extra day of reading for February! And I used that to my advantage to squeeze in one last read for the month. Overall, February was a decent reading month as I finished 7 books – including a beast of a book. While I’m trending a bit behind my reading goal for 2024, I’m still feeling pretty confident I can hit it as I’m back on my…

Give it up for the Bad Kids at level 14!
After acing the Last Stand and their junior year, the Bad Kids have gotten a well-deserved level up to 14! Let's see what's in store for them. (As always, my previous recaps for levels 11, 12, and 13 can be found at these links!)
Adaine: Wizard 14. Adaine learns two new 1st-7th level spells (in addition to whatever she's learned from her downtime rolls, which as of this episode is MANY new spells). She also gets her final subclass feature, Greater Portent, which lets her roll 3 portents every long rest (improved from 2). She can also now prepare 19 spells a day (previously 18).
Fabian: Fighter 6/Bard 8 (was Fighter 6/Bard 7). Fabian gets a second 4th-level spell slot and learns a new 1st-4th level spell. In addition, he's increased his charisma by 2, taking it to 20--he is now the most dexterous and most charismatic you can be without magical help! Maximum Legend indeed. With this increase, his modifier goes up to +5, and his spell save DC, attack bonus, and all CHA-based skills (Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion) go up by one. He can also now use Bardic Inspiration 5 times per short rest, improved from 4.
Fig: Bard 10/Paladin 3/Warlock 1 (was Bard 10/Paladin 2/Warlock 1). Fig has reached her paladin Sacred Oath subclass! We don't know which it is yet (although many people have speculated Devotion), but it will include access to two new spells specific to her oath and two Channel Divinity options, which she can use once per short or long rest. I believe her spell slots remain the same due to multiclass shenanigans, but please correct me if I got that wrong. She also gets Divine Health, which makes her immune to disease.
Gorgug: Barbarian 5/Artificer 9 (was Barbarian 6/Artificer 7). Gorgug continues to swap around barbarian and artificer levels! With this change, he loses Mindless Rage (so he can now be charmed or frightened while raging) and gains an unknown feat, access to 3rd level spells and two 3rd-level spell slots, and an unknown Barbificer subclass feature. (EDIT: I had forgotten he's not a Battle Smith anymore; thanks to @lookin-reproachfully for reminding me!)
Kristen: Cleric 14. Her Destroy Undead ability can now destroy undead creatures of CR3 or lower on a failed save, which includes ghasts, ghouls, poltergeists, and skeletons, although there are a lot of undead Brennan could throw at them. She can also now prepare 19 spells a day (previously 18).
Riz: Rogue 14. We saw Riz put his new feature, Blindsense, to great use this episode! He is now aware of any hidden or invisible creatures within 10 feet of him, as long as he can hear. (Hopefully he can use that against Kipperlilly too…) He also learns one new 1st-3rd level spell, which can be a Wizard spell from any school.
And across the board, everyone's HP goes up and they get another hit die!
One little bonus--this episode, we discovered Kipperlilly is a Mastermind Rogue. An ability of hers that might come in handy is Master of Intrigue--if she has observed a creature for 1 minute, she can "unerringly mimic" their speech patterns and accent. I'll let you all speculate on what she might do with that, and I'll see you all if/when we hit level 15.

I'm writing this up for the second time since Tumblr ate my post :( so this probably won't be as much detail this time around.
The darker side of Darkwick
There's been a lot of allusions to shady stuff and harsh punishments at Darkwick since the very beginning, and it was so satisfying to see it come together this chapter. Quick recap of what's happened so far—
Haku gives some omimous warnings about harsh punishments when MC is trying to run away. He mentions Articles 77 and 78 (which are more fully explained in the Hotarubi chapter) and that ghouls can be punished for taking any actions outside of their missions.
This is constantly backed up since the very beginning. MC not being allowed to go home even briefly. Permits are required to leave campus and it's not unusual for recreational permits to be denied. Even with a permit, you can't be out at night unless it's for a mission. Stopping to get a snack while on a mission is potentially grounds for punishment. Entire Houses get punished for the misbehavior of a few people, and a House can be blanket banned from leaving campus.
When MC returns after that escape attempt, Kaito is upset as he's just now realized that he could be punished as an accomplice. Up until this point, he's been sympathetic to MC wanting to go home.
Haku also reminds Rui of the dangers of deviating from the mission and it seems that Rui is subject to particular restriction and surveillance. He says that a punishment would be particularly bad if Rui was involved.
Haku makes an odd comment like "since there's a chance we'll go home after graduation." Combined with Ritsu's comment about the Laurel Crown being the best way to get independence from Darkwick... I have a lot of thoughts about this and will write up a separate post later.
Budgets are fucked up, with Haru personally responsible for funding repairs to Jabberwock. (I'm also gonna write a separate post about this later.)
On to the new stuff from Hotarubi chapter—
We learn that Darkwick has a secret prison which was run by Ultio, one of the defunct houses. Lyca is being held there due to prejudice about him being part werewolf. He was imprisoned while being investigated for murder, but despite the discovery that he is innocent, he is still locked up because he could potentially be dangerous.
Articles 77 and 78 are explained. They allow for the imprisonment of ghouls who deviate from their missions and anomalies that are deemed too dangerous to society. Lyca is being held as a dangerous anomaly because he is part werewolf.
Subaru's first mission at Darkwick was to kill Lyca. He apparently decided to investigate instead and attempt to prove Lyca's innocence. He has been petitioning for Lyca's release, to no effect.
(This makes me wonder if Subaru was always in Hotarubi? The facility was being run by Ultio at the time, and why would they bring in someone from another house to kill a prisoner? If the initial mission was investigation using Subaru's unique stigma, it would make sense to bring him in from outside. But Lyca says that he knew Subaru had been sent to kill him from their first meeting. Related, Subaru also says that he and Zenji have been in the same house since first year, but he does not say that they were always in Hotarubi.)
We also get confirmation that there were multiple fatalities during the Clash. Zenji, who was killed by a rogue anomaly and is now back as a ghost, wasn't the only one who went "past the point of no return."
Finally, when MC and Haku go to the Chancellor and Moby to ask for Lyca's release, they are both very against it. The Chancellor starts to say, "What if we have another case of a ghoul—" but is silenced by Moby. Moby also seems like he's kinda threatening Haku in this scene.

You don't have to read the comics.
I think one of the reasons a lot of people in the batfandom don't read the comics is that you never know where to start. You want to start at the first issue, but there's always more context of other stories, and you don't want to be missing out on things.
That's ok, and I understand that some people don't want to be confused when the character references an event that they weren't there for. Literally zero judgement here.
But I will ask you to at least get involved with some of the content in other ways, so that you fully understand the characters and their stories.
Honestly, there are hundreds of videos out there that are full-length recaps of the comics and what happens. They add in the context of the other stories, and they tell you what you need to know so that you're aren't lost (This is actually how I got into the fandom in the first place, so it's potato approved).
My favorite channel is Comicstorian, but there's plenty of others out there.
And it's fun, too! You get to meet all these new characters, and see all their plot lines. Sure, you'll get plenty of content about the main 4 robins, but maybe you'll fall down a rabbit hole and fall in love with Stephanie! or Cass! Or Duke! Or any of the thirty people that Batman has collected into a little family!
Maybe you'll watch a couple videos and then go out to buy all the comics with Carrie! Or, I dunno, Terry! Or you'll abandon the bats all together when you meet Roy Harper (for real this time)!
PLEASE. I am now begging on my hands and knees for the fandom to interact with some of the canon content so I don't have to see any more posts about Dick "golden retriever" Grayson and Jason "eternal rogue arc" Todd.
