i thought my boy licorice was gonna get eliminated for some reason but his deviousness ended up helping him find the immunity necklace….. im so proud of him…. I’m sad for my milkyway fans tho they didn’t deserve this fate. actually now I’m mad. can we all rant about this?! that was very bad writing actually. there was no reason for her to get out this episode. let’s fight about it actually justice for milkyway. I’m not even kidding I’m very peeved abt that rn I’ll never forgive them for that it was so forced. whew… anyways. very cheeky how rye cookie got out bc of licorice that was funny…. but I think every fan who finds licorice annoying will be understandably mad at him lol. at least, by affogato’s words, he’s a true cookie of darkness after all 😈

also I like that we’re getting a crumb of licorice and cream uni, i want them to interact more they’d seem like good friends honestly 😼

oh yeah and here are the two that got out! technically milkyway wasn’t eliminated per se but she is no longer with us (sigh) so I will still put her here anyway

Ok so I’m fully in 6reeze hell (I became obsessed back when it was just 4nemo and here I am still)

I just really like thinking about what the dynamic would be like between all the anemo boys and how they would sync up with one another in an idol group so here are some headcannons! These are just my personal headcannons btw, I’m not sure if the fandom has collectively given this au lore or anything so don’t mind my ramblings I guess.

(This is mostly inspired by Scara becoming playable, if that wasn’t obvious)

In my mind, the anemo boys idol group kinda works like NCT in that every so often they add another member to the group

As such, I’m gonna think of the current iteration of the group name as more of an “era” name, and each era is defined by the addition of another member

(So 4NEMO was their first era with the original 4 members and 5WIRL was the era after Heizou was introduced)

So now, with the addition of Scara, the group has entered their 6REEZE era

In terms of an idol name, Scara didn’t really have a name he particularly wanted to go with.

The name “Scaramouche” was associated with his past too much for him to be comfortable using it, and he didn’t want to use his real name, Kunikuzushi like some of the other members.

(Venti, Xiao, and Aether have stage names, while Kazuha and Heizou chose to use their real names)

(Venti’s situation is odd. His real name is Barbatos, and he used to go by that as his idol name when he was a soloist, but after joining 4NEMO, he decided to go by Venti. He actually prefers to be addressed as Venti now, and has contemplated legally changing his name)

(Xiao goes by Alatus as his stage name, and Aether didn’t know what he wanted his stage name to be, so he just picked whatever the fans called him after their debut.)

Scara contemplated going the same route as Aether, but in an effort to be more transparent, he had the fans vote on his idol name.

In the meantime though, I like to think that every time a new member debuts, they have a solo feature debut song, where they are the center in terms of vocals or rapping.

Heizou probably had a fun, pop-ey song or something with heavy rap (I see him as a rapper)

But Scara would probably decide to go with a ballad as his debut song.

But not just any ballad… imagine him singing “Shirunoga E-wa” by Fujii Kaze

The other members would be backup vocals or instrumentals (almost Day6 style)

I like imagining Xiao on the drums, Kazuha on synth and Venti killing it on the piano.

Aether and Heizou providing the upper and lower register backup vocals, respectively.

And just. Scara. Absolutely in his own headspace singing this song. An ode to his rocky past and the love he has for his fans—the ones who love him despite what happened.

I feel like the other members would just look at him in awe during his debut performance

And right as he finished, Venti would grab the other members and they would all dogpile on top of him

In conclusion. I have a lot of thoughts about 4NEMO turned 5WIRL turned 6BREEZE.

i am having such a blast curating an ebook library tbh. there are 384 books. is it hoarding? yeah. am i gonna read them all? nah. but i am gonna read a lot of them and it's so cool.

so let me proselytize for just a sec

I'm sure you already know about Project Gutenberg where you can get Dracula, Little Women, any of your high school lit faves, Carmilla, Sherlock Holmes, and loads more. I just downloaded a copy of Oliver Twist bc I've always wanted to read it. Will I? Idk.

I also just found girlebooks which probably has lots of overlap with project gutenberg, but may be easier to browse. most are free and some are like $1-2ish. I have been wanting to read Willa Cather, whose writing my granny really liked. Also lots of Jane Austen, Virgina Woolf, idk, whatever you're into. Today I downloaded A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains which is a nonfiction collection of letters from a woman traveling solo through the rockies in 1873

When I pay for ebooks, I prefer them to be DRM free. but luckily, there's a website to help you find DRM-free sites. Personally I buy a lot of ebooks published by Tor, which are always DRM free (although you have to buy through major ebook retailers). (Murderbot would Hate DRM, obviously)

On the more technical side of things, I use calibre to organize my digital library. It took me a while to come around to it, but the level of customization is awesome!

All these things take a bit of learning (I am happy to help you) but here are some things I do with calibre: I always load in descriptions & make sure the book cover is the version I like. Then I set the tags to things that make sense to me. Once I click the "polish books" button, those changes get saved into the epub file

I use a Kobo ereader (btw i bought it on mercari - you don't need a new one!), and I have it set to automatically generate & update Kobo Collections based on my calibre tagging system. This is so helpful to have an "up next" list without having to make it on an e-ink screen

if you wanna get really hacky, look up some De-DRM and De-ASCM plugins for calibre. These can help you remove DRM from any .ascm files (such as, google ebooks you've bought in the past, or , ebooks you checked out from the library). It took me some trial and error to set up, but it took less than a day and the rewards have been infinite.

and finally, remember you can get a Seattle Public Library Card through their books unbanned project! I made sure to send a donation their way bc their collection is HUGE and has been great for me to find stuff I want to read. Don't forget your local library either

I still love physical books! But there are lots of benefits to curating an ebook library for yourself as well. If you want to give it a go, I hope some of these links get you on track <3

on the me side: things have been good! everything has picked up and got better since the whole diary fiasco, despite what i thought! i even made up with the girl who i said some awful thngs about. she's a swiftie, so it's easy XD (also she is machete's gf's bestie). she told me she got eras tour tickets, im so happy for her! her lit exam was literally on speak now tv. legend. i'm glad we're not fighting anymore. i made new friends, kept some of the old ones. if i could go back... i dont think i would change a single thing :") our finals are over, we're officially out for the summer (prom was amazing) ive been really really happy, and i hope you are, too ❤

on the sad beautiful tragic love life of sythe side: well, maybe not so sad or tragic, because... *drum roll* i have a boyfriend now! he is neither machete boy, or cranberry hehe. he's perfect and i adore him :D let's call him eli, but he sends me good morning messages, and has adorable nicknames for me, and makes me feel amazing ✨

it seems like machete and i have just magically cleared stuff up between us? he certainly doesnt seem to harbour any resentment towards me, or anything. we talk rarely when cranberry's with us, sort of like a mediator ? (cranberry is the unfortunate and accidental middleman lol, literally) although we do most of the talking without cranberry, sort of ignoring cranberry being there. we even have a snapstreak going. i've made peace with [the idea of] his girlfriend (she turns up in his snaps but it doesnt bother me anymore!) ; i found her tiktok and spotify a while back (not that i was looking for it). she has a playlist for machete with a bunch of swiftie songs too haha. it's different from mine. i think mine got really crazy because its sort of a mix between him and some other people, too, plus some songs are just there because i like them lmao

cranberry also has a girlfriend too now, i'm friends with her, but we're not close. it was sort of rocky between us for a while, and some weird stuff and some not cool stuff happened, but we stayed friends :) if i'm being honest, she's not the first person i would ship with him, but if he's happy, i'm happy!

another friend i might have dated is still around haha. let's call him han solo, because thats who he reminds me of. he's also cranberry's best friend! (he and cranberry insisted i write a fanfic for them hehe it was hilarious and caused chaos but everything's good!) he probably knows about eli by now. my friend, let's call her luna, is the captain of the sythe x han ship, but eli exists, and she knows it. but, she'll always ship me and han, i guess. he's nice, too. we only became friends in the period after everything with mchete and cranberry, so i don't think you've ever heard of him? but we had a blast towards the end of the year. we might even go to school together next year? i don't particularly want to make major life decisions over a guy who isn't even my boyfriend, but if we do, i would be really happy :)

all in all, i suppose it is a lovely end to a chaotic but perfect year ❤ i hope everyone gets all the love they deserve and live up to their full potential! it's made me realize that life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows, heartbreaks and falling in love, but in the end, everything always works out! i don't believe in luck, just hard work 💪

thanks for writing good arcs for your :female MC/, I have been seeing some posts about Grace lately where some people have the audacity to say Grace wasn’t in a worse situation than :Alastair: or //Matthew//, and meanwhile she is in a bad one she still kept apart James and Cordelia and hurted Matthew as part of the triangle, I thought this was all already covered and clear so here I am writing to thank you for not falling into these mindset and giving justice to Grace

Another anon sent me months ago an ask informing me of people saying that Alastair had less choice than Grace and I laughed because this user erased and denied Grace's canon traumas to give them to Alastair.

It's fun to see how people bend over backwards to headcanon Alastair as the victim of the situation when he literally never had a problem in his life (rocky relationship with Charles besides). In the books he is the bully, he and his friends attempt to murder James, and he repeats and helps to spread rumors about Gideon cheating on Sophie with Charlotte and Matt being the result of this affair; Alastair did everything of his own volition, he was never forced to do anything in his life and yet the fandom cries saying that he is a victim when in the whole trilogy + novellas he isn't even close to what Grace goes through in one (1) random of her flashback chapters in Chain of Iron.

I don’t even start with Matt. Of course, he the incredibly rich boy [guys be fucking for real: he can afford a car in 1903, Matt is super rich] who is always been free to do whatever he wanted, who has a loving family, a parabatai and a circle of supporting friends is worse than Grace.

Do you know the ironic thing, anon? These people send me and @fimproda hate anon asks claiming that we are "miserables who didn’t like ChoT" because our headcanons didn’t become true, but then they post bullshit like this that is contraddicted by the books and the novellas collections.

Also fun how the canon traumas of a female character are erased and denied to be given to two hot male characters, that’s not mysoginist at all!

Btw I'm not into that mindset because I can read, and it’s clear that Grace is a victim, unlike Alastair who needs to be painted as a victim by the fandom and Matt who is nowhere close to Grace’s situation, he isn’t even a real alcoholic since in canon his addiction just randomly disappears by travelling solo around Europe.

Also, don’t get me started with the fact that some people think Grace is worse than Zara, who proudly calls herself a f4sc1st (idk if Tumblr has a problem with this word, just in case I censor it), or Sebastian who is a child killer, slaughtered good part of the living Shadowhunters, tried to abuse Clary and is the reason why Julian had to become a parent to four younger siblings at 12.

Fuck-ups: Why its important that Darth Vader and Kylo Ren were unforgivable

So I’m gonna start with a few disclaimers: I’m a Reylo stan, a feminist, a long time Star Wars fan and I don’t think those things are in conflict. 

Let me explain.

Yes, I know. Rey and Kylo Ren got off to a very rocky start. He abused her mind, she split his face in two. We know the drill. But THEN they discovered that there was more to each other than enemies and that’s when things got interesting. 

It went pretty much the same way with Luke and Darth Vader. Their first actual meeting was far from a cozy father-son reunion. Vader chopped off his own son’s hand, and Luke ended up severely battered, bruised and traumatized by the sword of a man that already knew that he was his father. Kidnapping and torturing his best friends had been Darth Vader’s way of luring Luke out of Dagobah, into Cloud City. There, Vader welcomed Luke with the giving end of some good old Canon Typical Violence. Empire Strikes Back in its full glory. 

Considering the original trilogy, Darth Vader was an awful piece of shit father. He tortured his own daughter (and never apologized, wtf). He mutilated his son and then offered him to a godamn creep (GrandPalpie). He was also a mass murderer.

And that’s only after he had a name change. 

Before going by his stage name, Anakin Skywalker was a massive fuck up. Up from Attack of the Clones on to The Return of the Jedi, he just chugged down mild mistakes, egregious sins and outright crimes against humanity like tic-tacs. 

We, the audience, knew Ani, didn’t we? He started as an innocent and generous child-slave, and later found himself trapped between a dogmatic belief system and feelings too strong for him to handle. He was only 19 when he married Padmé, thus failing as a Jedi. He was just an angry, horny, misguided teen.

But still, as Darth Vader, he proceeded to further fucking up his life trough and thorough. And he had to remain accountable! He murdered his wife, for crying out loud.

But the thing is, Star Wars is hardly about accountability (it was briefly mentioned in TLJ, absolute brilliant script, btw) but about family and forgiveness. And that’s when Luke’s brilliant arc comes in: Luke basically forgave Anakin because FUCK THE DARK SIDE, that’s why. Luke mastered his own fear, rage and anxiety because he wanted to love his father and wouldn’t hold a (well deserved) grudge against him if that’s what it took to keep the Dark Side in check. 

And it was then when Darth Vader, who already knew that he was a monster and well beyond redeeming, finally turned against his master. When showed unrelented compassion, forgiveness and love, Anakin gathered enough strenght to go back to the light. But he was too far gone, had lived long enough in the darkness and all that was left for him to do was sacrifice himself for his son, upend the Rule of Two, and die in the light.

Then Luke and Ani went and partied with some Ewoks and shit. And Anakin still didn’t aknowledge his daughter, but that’s not my point. 

Thirty years or so later (in and out of universe), we came across Ben Solo. He was failed by his father, his mother and his uncle. He was groomed by a fucking telepathic monster. He felt alone and confused and of fucking course he wanted to go to the Dark Side to be finally free of the pain if that’s what the voices in his head kept saying. 

What good were the soothing words of Han Solo, who had disappointed him countless times? Of Leia, pleading him to go back home, from where she herself kicked him out? And don’t get me started on Luke, whom spectacularly undermined his very first Supreme Leader public appearence, instead of, you know, apologizing for trying to murder an innocent boy in his sleep? 

So here we had Ben Solo, aka Kylo Ren. Mass murderer. Kidnapper. War criminal. Awful piece of shit person. Dumpster fire heart. No control of his rage. No understanding of his grief. The ultimate family disappointment. Not good at the light, but also mediocre at the dark. Absolute, ultimate fuck-up.

And we have Luke Skywalker, the legend who ran to an island and hid in shame for years, after fucking up big time with his padawan and nephew. The Jedi who turned his back on the galaxy. Another, older, should-have-known-better fuck-up.

They fucked up. So. Fucking. Hard.

Kylo Ren couldn’t be brought back by the same people that pushed him over the edge. Luke was not going to listen to the very people he had failed.

I think that Rey, as a new, unbiased and untethered player in the Skywalker Family Drama Saga, was supposed to show forgiveness to Kylo Ren. Not acceptance of his Dark Side shennanigans (she didn’t join him, didn’t she? and she gave him that look when closing the Falcon’s hatch on him), but she was supposed to offer a trustworthy hand to help him back to the light. 

She wanted to bring him back just because she knew (the Force thingies told her) that there was still hope for him. If Kylo had found with her the way to forgive himself, and forgive Luke, and finally go back... How cool would’ve that been? How cathartic?

And that would only be a secondary narrative in Rey Nobody’s beautiful character arc. You know, a Nobody finding her way in a complicated galaxy, stirring up hope and kindness. Befriending a First Order desertor. Giving a son back to his mother. Outgrowing the trauma of being abandoned as a child. Finding herself.

Just as Luke, in her first two movies, Rey was personally victimized by the First Order/Empire, Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker/Vader. She went to “Master Skywalker”, the Dark Side cave and her own abuser and enemy for answers. Found none. She was constantly left confused, sad and alone. She had to find her place, not so much in others, but inside herself.

I believe that Star Wars is about heroes chosing to be kind, loving and hopeful. The very fucked up villains are not defeated: they find forgiveness and compassion at the hands of the heroes. Evil is destroyed by being outright rejected.

That's how we're gonna win. Not by fighting what we hate. But saving what we love. 

PS: The sequel trilogy could have been about Ben Solo learning to walk in the light, or about Rey forgiving herself for failing to bring him back (yeah, still an option for me, as long as it was well done). 

It could have been about what to do with no legacy, what to do with too much legacy, how to cope with your own legacy. 

We got TROS instead. A real fuck up. 

Are we going to bully producers and directors, are we going to wallow in our collective misery, or are we going to build a better, more creative, inclusive, loving, understanding, fandom?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Well, where to begin. After 42 years and 8 films we’ve finally come to number 9, the last film in the Skywalker Saga. Star Wars has probably been the most controversial film series in history, creating more anger and division than Brexit. Some fans prefer the originals, some fans prefer the prequels. Some fans love The Last Jedi, some fans hate The Last Jedi. It’s been a rocky road for these films, no matter how much us fans moan, we love Star Wars. Btw, you’re not a fan if you get annoyed about a black actor being a stormtrooper or give shit to Kelly Marie Tran, you’re a wanker. I personally, get annoyed about every one of the Star Wars films. The originals are too boring and not enough action, although the story is better and using practical effects. The prequels use way too much cgi, however they are much action-packed and they are different from the other films e.g. blowing up ANOTHER Death Star. I was always hoping that the sequels would mix the best things from both lots of films, yes boomers, there are good things about the prequels. Whilst they felt more like the old-school style of the films, they stuck to the same story plot and I was never blown away with the lightsaber/force battles. The Rise of Skywalker unfortunately follows suit. Whilst it’s a great film for fan satisfaction it’s a terrible film that lacks logic, story and imagination. 

So here’s the plot. Emperor Palpatine, you know that guy who died in Episode 6, he’s somehow alive in a weird half dead trance and has been controlling Snorke and every bad guy. He wants Kylo Ren to bring Rey to him. Palpatine shows Kylo the army he has been building for him, which is massive, and that he’ll gift Kylo this if he delivers. Rey has been mastering the force and she’s become a bit of bad-ass. The resistance find out about this super army and Rey decides to go and defeat Palpatine to save the world. Finn, Poe and Chewie go with her. Space adventures happen. Turns out Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter! What? Rey stabs Kylo and then heals him using the force. Cos that’s a thing. Rey goes to confront her grandad whilst Kylo casts aside his dark side ways to be Ben Solo and goes to join Rey. Palpatine doesn’t want to kill Rey but instead wants Rey to kill him so all the Sith, including himself can go inside her and be Empress Palpatine. She doesn’t agree but then sees that The Resistance (currently fighting the big army are being outnumbered). Kylo then turns up but Palpatine drains their life force bringing him back to life. Rey, after hearing the voices of previous Jedi masters, gets up and kills Palpatine, she dies. Ben finds her, he uses that weird force healing skill, she wakes up. THEY FUCKING KISS FOR SOME STUPID REASON. Ben dies and he becomes one with the force. The end.

I’ll start with the good points. Adam Driver was great and has been awfully underused in these films. The fight scene between Kylo and Rey was good and entertaining. Ian McDiarmid is a fantastic actor, and although I think it was such a batshit crazy idea having Palpatine back, it was great watching his performance. It was good to see Finn and Poe have that relationship that we saw in The Force Awakens. That was missing big time in The Last Jedi and I’m glad we saw them together again because it works really well. And it did have some great fan service, I can’t lie. I won’t spoil that bit just in case, but you can’t be a Star Wars fan and not get a bit giddy about that.

However, I do think fan service has been the biggest problem, not just with this film, but with these sequels. They keep bringing back dead characters and in Carrie Fisher’s case (rest her soul), dead actors. It need’s to move on. The characters Poe, Finn, Rey and Kylo are all really cool and interesting characters but I feel like their development and the films progression has been thwarted by this insistence of having the old characters being around. It was great for the first film. I think The Last Jedi had the perfect opportunity to kill them off, but they kept Leia in it. Her appearance in RoS looked dodgy and her death to me was disrespectful. It looked like they had just run out of unseen footage and had to do with what they didn’t have. Having her, and more importantly Palpatine back jut lacked the new characters being the main vocal point. Having Palpatine back as the main villain was a weird decision and shows any lack of planning from the writers/guys in charge. There’s been no hint that Rey was related to him, it’s just really outside the box that it becomes ridiculous. If we had seen hints, or gone ‘oh that makes sense because of that bit in The Force Awaken’ I’d be ok with it, but I don’t think that has happened. I think what has happened is because TLJ was so divisive, J.J Abrams has turned his back on all that the last film set out to do and gone back to a safe, boring and unimaginative film that forgets the previous events. It would be interesting to know what ideas Rian Johnson had for the ending of this saga. As good as it was seeing Finn and Poe back together, their story wasn’t that exciting, they just go from place to place without any real meaning or relevance. The kiss we all wanted was between these two men, their bromance has been used throughout the films and I think it is a shame we never saw that. Not just because it would have been a relevant to what the other films have done but because it’s such a huge moment in Star Wars history for young girls and boys seeing that. Instead they showed a lesbian kiss between two people who were basically extras. We know that will be cut it, it won’t mean anything. What was more annoying was that Zorii, Poe’s old friend, was basically there to make Poe look more straight and manly. You can be manly and gay, and his name is Poe Dameron. And that was a terrible thing about the kiss between Rey and Kylo. They had no sexual tension, yes there was always tension but never sexually. Why these two possible heterosexual characters got this key scene is beyond me, unless it’s society showing us that that is the norm. It wasn’t needed, at all. Also, why did the film try to make Chewie’s ‘death’ emotional, when 3 minutes later we saw him again? Either kill him for real, or pretend kill him and then bring him back at the end for a hero’s return. We didn’t see another transporter that took him away so that was a really odd choice that lacked emotion and sense. 

For those reading and probably think I’m a hater, I’m not. These aren’t silly little things like ‘Rey’s hair shouldn’t be that length’ or ‘Poe said that in The Last Jedi so that doesn’t make sense in canon’. These are real film and basic writing points. This film is similar to Avengers: Endgame. It doesn’t do anything new. It’s going back to old characters that will please the fans. And yes it does because it looks cool. But they’re taking the piss out of you, they’re making you look foolish because they’re just showing you lovable old characters without any risk or real emotion. 

And one last negative. 

THE STROBE LIGHTING RUINED THE MOST INTERESTING BITS OF THIS FILM. FUCK SAKE YOU COULDN’T EVEN MANAGE TO DO THAT RIGHT.

Seriously though, this was incredibly annoying, I had to keep looking away. I don’t know why it was done, it wasn’t needed. Strobe lighting can be a useful tool, but it just became frustrating doing most of the final third. If you guys have epilepsy, beware. 

p.s I’m not apologising for the slightly irrelevant baby yoda gifs, that guy is the cutest.

2/5 I went in to The Rise of Skywalker with the lowest possible expectations, I still came out disappointed. The story was ridiculous. Logically, it didn’t make any sense. Even though it did have good fan service and fans would be happy with the surprises that RoS has throughout, it was still massively frustrating.

⌠ BACKGROUND ⌡

so starting with her parents, where all stories begin, let’s just preface by saying these were awful people. they ran in similar circles during school, a very bad one at that, & fell in love after sharing a joint. in their high daze they saw what their mind was conjuring but not the truth about one another. but for them, it had been enough. thus, their story began. it was a very rocky road but they managed to stay together regardless. the bond they had created blossomed as they partook in illegal activities such as petty theft, vandalism, & it slowly evolved into larger problems. 

after hyeon’s mother, named jung eunbi, stole from her parents for the last time she was kicked out into the street with her boyfriend ( who had also been kicked out ) with no place to go. both dropped out of high school as it wasn’t their “””scene””” & took to the dirty streets of busan trying to turn tricks. they’d do anything they could to get some money to feed their addictions. in the midst of their scrambling for what they deemed as important, they never thought to buy protection. so one fateful night after a good steal, they made love on a dingy couch high as a kite & eunbi got pregnant.

she hid the pregnancy for as long as she could from her boyfriend, he only noticed when there was a rather apparent bump under her baggy clothing. with the weight of the realization they might have to force themselves to become a real family, the couple got hitched & attempted to find real jobs. in some miracle, they managed to find a house to live in & eventually “raise” their child in. 

hyeon was born on the 8th of june, on a dark morning with clouds hanging ove the sky & rain starting to pour. she was premature as her mother did drugs during the pregnancy ( which was really no shocker ) & almost was pronounced a still born before they heard the tiny being crying & gasping for air. her parents had assumed that once she was born, they’d feel that parental love that everyone claimed to have but it never came. they stayed in the hospital a total of two days & hardly let their newborn get the help she needed before they hauled ass out of there. 

the first 3 years of hyeon’s life were better than expected, her parents at least tried to take care of her but once she was able to do everything on her own they left her be to pursue their own happiness. honestly think of matilda but a lot more severe ok

she would often get locked in a closet while there were parties held & her parents were too strung out to remember their child. she could spend days in there before she was released. this was only the beginning.

at 8 years old, her father lost his job ( her mother stayed at home ) due to a random drug test & he of course failed. this triggered her parents to panic as they no longer could supply themselves with their so desired highs. so after a night of scheming, they came up with a plan so sinister not even the devil himself would agree.

random men & women began to arrive to their dingy home as hyeon would be ushered into quiet rooms with them where they would pay to do whatever they pleased with the young girl. this went on for 2 years before hyeon was pulled into the principals office at school with questions about where those bruises on her came from. her mom was picked up for possession & this prompted the police to raid their home to find many illegal substances throughout the place as well as evidence of abuse towards the child.

soon after her parents were placed in prison, hyeon was shipped off to seoul to the biggest orphanage in the country. there she stayed for 4 more years. the time there was quiet, nobody asked her about where she came from & she never spoke about it. in truth, she never knew how to as she was a blank mind essentially. 

luckily when she was 15, after a long & strenuous search, hyeon’s grandparents found her & adopted her into their home in daegu. they were absolutely appalled at this shell of a girl, but could only blame her trauma on their own children. it was here that hyeon was loved for the first time in her life ( & possibly the only time ) & taught how to feel something besids fear. she was still horribly inept at processing emotions or showing them.

two years spent with them & one night as hyeon & her grandfather were sat at the family piano, playing & singing a song as her grandmother recorded them in secret. that same video was sent to an entertainment company without hyeon’s knowledge but was thoroughly surprised & equally as excited when she was recruited. only a measly year in training with her 2 group members before they debuted & they were suddenly the biggest gg in sk.

the group debuted under the name of PTL, hyeon’s stagename was now Tink as she accompanied her members in the ride of a lifetime. they were extremely popular with their girl crush yet enticing vocals with miss tink as the main vocalist & maknae. even so successful as to have a world tour ! the group had their differences, hyeon being the medium for them as the other girls were rather opposing forces. often she was put in the middle of their arguing only to run away when conflict came up. during this time she would write & compose her own songs, bringing a heavy soul feeling to the group with her powerhouse vocals.

with all this being said ( which was a LOT ), there is still more. a year after debut while the group was climbing in popularity, hyeon began receiving texts from an unknown number. she soon found out that the people behind the mask were her parents, somehow having managed to be released from prison & found their new mission in life was to harass their daughter. on an october night, after an argument went down within the dorms between hyeon’s two members, the youngest set out by herself to meet those who hurt her for dinner. 

as expected, it went horribly. at this point in her life, she was extremely impressionable, & witnessed how her eonnie handled things which was with a liquor bottle in hand. so, like an idiot, she went to a club by herself to get fucked up. while sitting at the bar, a random man drugged her drink & took hyeon home with him. the night was a blur but when the young woman woke up she felt familiar bruises & a blanket of rage took over. the man was still passed out next to her.

so as she slipped out of his bed & found the nearest blunt object, hyeon managed to bash his skull in. she blacked out after that only to come to with clean hands & far away from the corpse. this was the reactant to lead her to go blind in rage & come to with blood on her hands. soon enough, she took a liking to the feeling & became two people within one while somehow managing to remain anonymous as a killer ran rampant.

earlier this year, after too much shit going on within the group, ptl disbanded & all went their own ways. which hyeon appreciated. the people she had once called her sisters had become like strangers & only cared about themselves, didn’t have the time to look after their maknae. 

to say that her already pre - existing depression & anxiety sky rocketed would be an understatement. she left music for a while, deciding to stream on twitch & youtube as a gamer. it made her happy for a short time but has been planning on returning to music with hints of a solo debut soon that has fans excited.

edit: i forgot to put this in here originally IGJFDKL but she moved to jeju after her group disbanded for a new start. plus, her address somehow got leaked so she uprooted all her shit & left for the secluded island.

The Last Jedi thoughts

It’s been a week and I’m still on the fence with this movie. Everytime I think I’m getting over the disappointment and starting to enjoy what was good there, I come across some review that’s like “THIS IS THE GREATEST STAR WARS MOVIE EVERRRR!!! ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING!” and it flares up again. I feel like I’m in the Gombrowicz’s tale, “how is it breathtaking, when it’s not breathtaking?! how is it beautiful, when it’s not beautiful? how is Rian Johnson a great director, when he’s the worst one since George Lucas?”. I need to get away from any discourse about this movie, or I’ll end up hating it. And it doesn’t deserve my hatred, because it’s not really a bad movie.

Bitter Me: *whispers* Luke Skywalker.

Me:

So I’ll just put my feelings here and move on. Under the cut, ‘cause lots of spoilers and overhelming bitterness, tho nothing new, others said all that already, so ignore as you wish.

“Star Wars: A New Hope” was the first movie I watched in cinema. No, I mean the remastered version from 1997, I’m not that old. But, yeah, Star Wars were the movies of my childhood, and are still among my favourite stories ever. After surviving the rocky Prequel Trilogy during my teenage years, I was excited to be brought back to the universe, and while The Force Awakens was redundant as far as the storyline goes, it won me over with the visuals. I made a conscious decision not to get attached to any of the new characters, because I felt there wasn’t enough to know about them. Besides, in the past Luke Skywalker didn’t became my favourite character until the second movie, so I figured I had the time to fall in love with them until I saw more.

Nice Me: Look at this one, he’s played by your favourite actor.

Bitter Me: That one is garbage.

Bitter Me: I’ll just wait to see the whole story. Maybe others will do something extra.

Nice Me: Like what? Blow up the Starkiller Base? Risk their life to save friends? Talk to Darth Vader’s helmet?

Bitter Me: Lose a limb.

(Btw, did you notice the advancement of the medical treatment in Last Jedi? The guy gets slashed through the back and wakes up mere days later just fine, other barely gets a scar…

Bitter Me: at least they are consistent with that.)

So, going in to see the Last Jedi, I had open mind, no expectations for the story, because Star Wars - aka the series that always makes it to the top of the lists of biggest plot twists ever - and I knew nothing besides what was shown in the trailer. And yet, I made one mistake. I saw someone’s tweet about how it’s the best Star Wars movie since the Empire…

Bitter Me: …and then I spent first hour trying to understand, where did this guy saw that greatness, because it just wasn’t there.

I’ve got the biggest gripes with the editing, cinematography, and directing in general. You see, this series, however bad the movies were, they at least were visually stunning. They had certain style and flow - despite all the action, there were always slower scenes, a bit more nostalgic, giving you time to soak up the visuals and feel the emotion. Johnson fails at that repeatedly. The edit at the beging is very rushed, the scenes chopped, and set-up of some could’ve been better. Even Ahch-too, which was amazingly shot in previous film, here becomes a more of clustered and claustrophobic set.

Nice Me: But there are some magnificient shots. The admiral Holdo launching into hyperspace - absolutely beautiful. The pretorian guards fight - one of the best lightsabers fights. The Crait scenes with crystals and everything.  

Bitter Me: which just angers me more, because if he’s capable of pulling of shots like that, why the whole movie isn’t equally beautiful???

Nice Me: But the Leia in vacuum scene starts beautiful too. I’m ecstatic that we finally have an undisputed proof that Leia is not only force sensitive, but she actually mastered the use of it. It would have been really interesting to see more of her in the next movie, might she have become a teacher Rey needs...

Nice Me:…but then the latter half of that scene is shot in such a way, it comes of as silly and utterly dumb. The guy is just bad at showing visions.

Nice Me: Breath. Just breath.

Bitter Me: …that one was horribly edited.

Nice Me: But the scene at dark place at AhchToo was impressive…

Bitter Me: …as a trick shot with no substance that leads to nowhere. He could have used some of that creative visuals for the Force Skype scenes, they were edited in such bland manner…

Nice Me: …you’re complaining about that because it reminded you of Alina and Darkling having identical force bond in Grisha, down to the shirtless scene…

Bitter Me:… as bad as that was, Bardugo at least gave a good explanation of how it was possible.

Nice Me: Snoke did it.

Bitter Me: I recognize the narrative need to create such connection between them, I just think it could have been done in a more artistic way visually.

Bitter Me: Rian is praised for the daring and innovative writing of this movie. And yet the main plot can be summed as: they are evacuating the rebel resistance base, escape - but not far, cause they can’t enter hyperspace, so they sneak into evil ship and try to turn off tracking beam, and then seek hidding on a nearby planet. Yep, I’ve never seen a star wars movie with a plot like that.

Bitter Me: So what’s so daring here? destroying all the symbols of the star wars franchise? Making Luke grumpy and acting against his very core?

Bitter Me: Look, I’m not so much against making Luke a space hobo hermit, who no longer wants to train Jedi, it‘s possible to have such turn after you tried and failed. But I have everything against Luke trying to murder Ben, because he’s too powerful and tempted to the dark side. Luke did everything he could to save his father, who was far deeper on the Dark side. Luke was himself tempted by it, and resisted it. Luke would have done everything to save Ben, but he would not draw a lightsaber on him…

Nice Me: But he says it was a flitting feeling, just a moment of weakness, he regrets deeply…

Bitter Me: What exactly young Ben Solo had done to lead Luke to even consider such an act? We are only told the dark side was rising in him, and that’s sounds vague as hell.

Look, The Star Wars at it’s core were a story about hope - that there’s good even in a bad person, about redemption, and unwavering familial love. Luke was the embodiment of that, and that scene goes directly against it.

If he so insist on having such a drastic turn for Luke, he should’ve made us understand, how did it happen. We should’ve seen more of young Ben Solo, and their dynamic prior to the break. It would serve both their characters and story overall better than this cheap shot for the shock value, so we, like Rey, would cry: You have created Kylo Ren???

But, honestly, if Rian is oh-so-clever and daring writer, he could’ve come up with a better, more complex backstory for Luke and Ben’s breakdown.

Bitter Me: and besides Luke’s arc here? The big lesson he learns? „the real great master let’s his students grow beyond him.” That’s such a simple one, so obvious, it’s dumb and annoying, not worthy to be Luke’s final arc. He was wiser than that. Luke was never about being great and powerful, he rejected offers to became such through dark side, he left his jedi training because his friends were more important to him. Why would he be afraid of his student becoming more powerful than him?

Nice Me: But Luke is great. Like when he says „what do you expect me to do? show up and wave my lightsaber, and they will all run off scared?”, he might be mocking the heroic ways and everyone’s expectations, but if you look back, he achieved his biggest win in the Original Trilogy by tossing asside the lightsaber and refusing to fight.

Bitter Me: …and then he goes and does excatly, what he mocked: shows up, wave the lightsaber and scare off the pesky First Order.

Nice Me: And it was EPIC! And the shoulder brush! hilarious!

Bitter Me: yeah, yeah. Btw, was that their first meeting since Luke tried to murder Ben? so he just like that, shows up, mocks Kylo’s powerlessness, fights him and then promises to forceghost hunt him for eternity?

Nice Me: What do you want him to do?

Bitter Me: …I don’t know, APOLOGIZE for trying to murder him?

Nice Me: fine, but this is still about redemption and love and hope. Rose says: That’s how we’re gonna win. Not fighting what we hate, saving what we love. It’s a great quote.

Bitter Me: Then who is saving Kylo? whose there left to love him? Rey, walking off on him, closing door on him? Leia, giving up on him, saying we need to kill him? What mother would say something like that? Leia would say something like that? The princess who was always compassionate, and hugging everyone around? Who spent all the previous film insisting on bringing Ben back?

Nice Me: She says it in a tone that suggests she’s not believing it herself. like she’s trying to convince herself, because others expect that of her, because he’s a threat to them all. And Luke counters it immedietly.

Bitter Me: …It’s still there.

Nice Me: …and there’s still third movie. The story is in progress.

Nice Me: At least Snoke is dead. That was GREAT. He always felt like this unnecessary ouside evil force, that people can conveniently blame for all the bad things done, just kill him and everythings gonna be bright and shiny again. By removing him so early, they made way and time to explore more complex evil inside us, err, characters, or harder to spot like the riches benefiting from the ongoing war. That’s a nice storytelling turn.

Nice Me: And Rey as a random nobody is a joy for my heart, because I’m a bit done with Chosen One trope, where hero’s been destinated for heroics on the qualms of being born a prince or noble or someone powerful. I’ve had hard times connecting with such characters, because I myself never felt born special.

(Bitter Me: Then how did you end up liking Luke, the very icon of Chosen One trope?

Nice Me: Loss of the limb.)

Bitter Me: okay, but that was only told to us, just like Rey’s vision of Kylo’s future. Told, not shown. I mean, given how bad Rian is at visions, it would be cringey, but still it’s a movie, use the visuals to convey the information. Not everything needs to be telegraphed, did we really need that guy liking the rocks on Crait to know it’s salt? Who cares it’s salt? That was distracting.

Nice Me: …that was to bring the attention to the footprint…

Bitter Me: …the big zoom on it did that just fine. The joke was unnecesary.

Bitter Me: Actually half the jokes were unnecessary. The humour was crude, often misplaced and under cutting the drama of the scenes. They say it was needed to balance out the dark themes this movie deals with, but in my opinion the previous movies dealt with the same dark drama, and yet used humour in a less forced nor cynical way. Some say it felt more like a Marvel movie, and true, that’s how it felt.

Nice Me:…but you loved Thor Ragnarok - for it’s humour exactly.

Bitter Me: one, Thor used humour with better placement and sense of purpose, didn’t try to undercut the emotional impact of the scenes with it. Two, it was a Marvel movie - you expect such humour, because that’s their style. Going to the Star Wars you expect Star Wars - great visuals, action scenes, emotions, feelings, not disgusting alien cow. It’s anti-climatic.

Besides, why are we so ashemed of pure emotions and drama, that we need to undercut it with gags and jokes? why there must be a wink, „yeah, we did this serious scene, but we’re not sure we got it good enough, people might mock us for it, better mock ourselves first.” For gods sake, dare to be honest. If it’s serious, heroic, epic, let it be such!

Nice Me: The latter half of the movie was great, tho. Rey using force in non-combat way to move rocks and save friends, nice way to turn joke around into something beautiful. All of them coming together on Millenium Falcon board. Luke’s death with the suns setting, making nice parallel to the sunset at Tatooine long ago at the begining of his journey. That last scene about the power of storytelling, I cried a little, it was so moving…

Bitter Me: … the storytelling about what? Self-righteous jedi deciding who is worthy of forgivness or chance for redemption, and who to finish off while they’re still a kid and asleep? About mothers giving up on their sons? About destroying everything that once was sacred, stripping it of the value? It’s all clever writting, but without understanding the soul of the Star Wars, without keeping it’s core sacred, it came of shallow.

Nice Me: shhh, calm down. It’s just a movie.

Bitter Me: How did we come to the Star Wars being just a movie? just a story? quite ironic, in the context of that ending scene.

Magic is gone.

Nice Me: Come on, Let’s watch it again, maybe you’ll like it better. There’s a cute orange murderball...

Bitter Me: …and my fave actor gets trashed around. Fine, let’s watch it again.

Lylla Masterpost

It’s been almost 3 years since GotG came out and Rocket Raccoon became hugely popular and I still keep seeing people wondering: Who’s Lylla?

You probably all know her as Rocket’s (ex) girlfriend, who is also an otter. She’s  appeared in VERY few stories, even less so than Blackjack O’Hare or Wal Russ. According to official sources, she’s coming back in the upcoming Rocket solo comic. 

So, to refresh some people’s memories of the character, or if you don’t know who she is, here’s a post with EVERY time she’s appeared in since Rocket’s debut to this day.

Lylla’s first appearance was in Rocket’s first appearance as well (not counting the Marvel Preview where he was called Rocky). She’s presented as Rocket’s girlfriend and Wal Russ’ (honorary?) niece, who named his ship, and a distressed damsel who gets kidnapped to lure Rocket into a trap. Of course, Rocket saves her and all is good...for the time. In general, she’s shown to be a weak, helpless individual who never gets to do anything on her own. She’s less a character and more a walking plot device. She barely has any dialogue, at that (I’m not posting every panel where she appears, btw). 

When she reappeared in the limited 4-issue Rocket Raccoon series, in 1985, Lylla’s character was expanded. She’s introduced as stripping, jumping into a waterfall and fooling around with Rocket.

Here, she is the heiress of Mayhem Mekaniks, the biggest toy-making industry in planet Halfworld. The toys are used to entertain the mentally ill humanoids living in the planet. However, her parents were killed when she was very young and the company was taken over by the mole Judson Jakes (who was the one who had her parents killed). Supposedly he’s only the owner of the company until “she comes of age” (Lylla was underage here?), so he’s forcing Lylla to marry him and thus get her company. Lylla refuses, of course.At the same time, rival toy company owner Lord Dyvyne also wants to marry Lylla in order to get her fortune, and she refuses as well. 

So Dyvyne sends the Black Bunny Brigade (lead by Blackjack O’Hare) to kidnap her and send her to him. Blackjack captured her (JUUUUST when she was holding a gun and about to fight to retrieve the Gideon’s Bible on her own, because she’s apparently not allowed to do that), but then decided HE wanted to marry her and get her fortune. Again, she refuses. He hits her, as well (for getting distracted looking at a mural, at that).

When Rocket and Wal Russ go to save her, she gets to punch a few bad guys, but then goes back to being a doormat when Blackjack becomes forceful. 

When Rocket arrives, Lylla...scolds him, for not being brave enough, even though he was in a hurry at the moment. When Blackjack joins Rocket’s group and they escape, she’s wary of him and he wants to get rid of her (because she’s the one the villains want).

Later, the scientist turtle Pyko explains what is the true nature of the planet: It was always meant to be a mental asylum and the animals are there to look after and entertain the patients, and everything the animals did was because of the original robot caretakers. Lylla, like Rocket, is surprised, but nowhere near to Rocket’s extent. 

Blackjack betrays the group and attempts to stab Lylla, but she (finally) fights back.

When they get to the toy-making factory (apparently the “real” one operated by robots, which makes the Toy Wars completely moot) they make special helmets  that can “cure” the mentally ill people (I’m making a whole different post about the ableism in Rocket’s backstory). When one is used on Rocket, he “realizes the depth of his love for Lylla” and smooches her, to her surprise (?). Lylla is also the first one to realize how quiet the patients got when the helmets are used on them. 

The villains strike back, and Lylla uses a gun alongside the main characters. She doesn’t fight directly though, and mainly hugs Rocket and swoons over his bravery. 

In the end, Rocket defeats the villains and Lylla leaves the planet with Rocket and the other animals in a giant spaceship, since they’re “no longer needed”. 

Something I noticed: thorough the story, Lylla NEVER does any work for her company at all. In fact, Jakes and Dyvyne fully believe that she’ll only manage the company with Rocket and then give all the toys away. This could be a good chance for a “villains underestimating a woman and then being proven wrong”, except that she NEVER does anything about it. She doesn’t even care about Rocket wanting to decipher the mysteries of Halfworld; she just wants to swim and have fun with her boyfriend. 

So basically: Lylla is a very passive, caring and sweet lady who nevertheless can fight and use a gun, doesn’t like working, has no authority over anybody, no ambitions and would rather have fun all day with no worries. That is, until Annihilators happened.

In this story, the entire “Toy Wars” thing got retconned into a holographic projection inserted in Rocket’s brain to keep him from going back to his planet. Here, Halfworld is portrayed as a maximum security psychiatric hospital/prison for the “incurably insane” (eeeeuuugh) attended by uplifted animals, and Rocket left to keep a powerful evil psychic from escaping by turning himself into the “key” that kept him prisoner (long story).

As for Lylla, she’s the head nurse and helps Rocket regain her memories using a special helmet (of course). She also used to be in a relationship with Rocket, but after he left, got married with Blackjack (who, in this version, was always a good guy and never hurt or kidnapped her). Rocket takes it all VERY well and wishes them for prosperity.

In this series, Lylla narrates what “truly” happened to Rocket and his planet, but NEVER does anything on her own, outside of shooting Rocket with a paralyzing gun when he got scared. Once the action starts, she gets shoved into the background, because she’s a woman or something. She also barely changes her expression and seems much more distant than how she was before.

it’s worth mentioning that here, none of the animals CHOSE to work in the hospital. They were just made to do so and nobody says anything about it. Rocket is the only one showing any interest of working in a completely different field. 

In the Free Comic Book Day 2014 comic, Rocket is accompanied by Wal Russ and fights against Blackjack (who is a mercenary again....?) and Dyvyne (who is alive...?!), and Pyko gets an appearance, but Lylla is nowhere to be found. Then there are the Skottie Young Rocket comics, which apparently negate Annihilators happened (and Lylla gets no mention at all, which I feel is for the better given the awful “Angry ex girlfriends” storyline). She doesn’t show up in the animated series episode involving Halfworld, either, even though most of the original characters appeared.

Ever since Annihilators, Lylla hasn’t appeared in ANYTHING, outside of getting her name dropped in a freeze-frame bonus in the GotG movie. Her name is included as one of Rocket’s allies along with Groot. Where is she and what did she do? Hasn’t been shown yet, and probably never will. 

According to official sources though, she IS coming back in the upcoming Rocket solo series, but given what happened with Blackjack O’Hare and how Rocket’s character has been getting increasingly more violent, self-centered, obnoxious, smarmy and petty, it wouldn’t be out of place for her to be completely derailed, turned evil, attempt to kill Rocket and/or get killed off. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

UPDATE: On May 2017, the latest Rocket solo series came out. One important character was Rocket’s “old flame” Otta Spice, an otter-like alien femme fatale who’s very clearly a stand-in for Lylla with a different personality. Lylla herself was alluded to during the story but didn’t show up until the last issue, in the form of a dream/hallucination. 

In this continuity, the events of the older comics happened BUT they kept the “Lylla married Blackjack” bit from Annihilators. Huh. Gotta keep her out of the way.

But the most notable reappareance of Lylla was on the Telltale GotG videogame, where she’s part of Rocket’s backstory. She’s voiced by Fryda Wolff and has a sweet, calm and playful personality, helping Rocket escape from Halfworld while gently teasing him. She’s also a skilled engineer and inventor. Unfortunately she dies to further Rocket’s angst, but she can be revived at the very end of the game.

So, after all this, I gotta ask: how would YOU save Lylla (from her narrative)?

Gotcha. I definitely go for lyric strength and unique sound over most other qualifications so here is a somewhat sorta vaguely categorized list of my faves. *on mobile, so sorry for formatting errors. *uh also I don't tend to listen to female vocalists much? So. Sorry.

Jams That May Not Be Overtly Worshipful But Are Christian Artists And Have Some Tracks That Make Me Break Down And Weep To Boot:

Needtobreathe (southern rock, my absolute favorite band, above all others anywhere. Songs like "Testify" and "Walking on Water" are just. I can't. I also have a very personal connection to "Washed by the Water" which was played on the radio back when I listened to Christian radio. But man. Their jams. "Hard Love" and "Hurricane" and "Let Us Love" asdfghjkl I could wax eloquent all day.)

House of Heroes (punk rock, such. good. punk. rock. "Constant" and "Salt in the Sea" are gorgeous, but my introduction was the driving ballad "Remember the Empire.")

Switchfoot (look I don't even know. Punk rock? With some beach aesthetic thrown in? "Vice Verses" is my fave album but I So Need To Listen To Their Latest.)

Skillet (hard rock, my first hard rock band. The albums Awake and Rise are tops.)

Superchic[k] (punk rock, absolutely excellent jams, start with the albums Rock What You Got and Beauty From Pain. Possibly the only female vocalist on this list.)

Thousand Foot Krutch (hard rock with a heavy dose of alternative punk something or other. Start with the album Masquerade.)

Marc Martel (Incredible vocalist. Canadian and therefore nice as can be. ;) Featured on that new Bohemian Rhapsody film because he is currently making a living off Queen tribute concerts as he has sounded like Freddie Mercury naturally and honed it. But. I love his original stuff. Check out his album The Impersonator.)

Decyfer Down (hard rock, start with the album Crash and just go through the tracklist. I got to meet TJ Harris at a solo show of his and I recommend his stuff too. Phenomenal rock vocals.)

Owl City (you probably know this one. Alternative folk? Maybe? Weird and whimsical but Good.)

Other, More Christ-Centered Rocky-Jam Stuff:

dcTalk (only the greatest thing to happen to Christian rock music in its entire history. Start with the Jesus Freak album.)

Newsboys (I don't mean the Newsboys on the radio right now, the writers aren't the same. Start with the album In The Hands Of God and work your way back in time, or start with their old Shine The Hits. You won't regret. Fun, driving, energetic, jams, lyrics to chew on, there is a lot of whistle tracks and they even have a song that talks about how everyone knows whistling makes for better mixes lol.)

Sanctus Real (their older stuff I think is better, especially The Face of Love and We Need Each Other, after that they still have some great music but it starts to sound like everything else.)

Downhere. (Asdfghjkl. Listen to the album Wide-Eyed and Mystified. Do it. Fave. Second favorite album is The Alter of Love.)

Daily Planet (one hit wonder, the band disbanded after their lead suffered an injury onstage and they couldn't finish their tour and lost their contract. Absolute music world tragedy. (He's ok now btw.) Listen to the song "Questioning the Notion" from their album "Hero" and then listen to the rest of the album. Best one album band I know about.)

-oh but speaking of 'heroes' this is my annual plug to listen to the concept album for Hero! The Rock Opera. Just do it. The first track is a little rough, but press past it and I think you'll thank me.

There's an old alternative soft rock band called The Waiting, and their album Blue Belly Sky is so great? Weird? But I love?

Tobymac (what a guy, honestly I need to bring him back to my playlist. If you haven't listened to him, may I suggest Welcome to Diverse City, Momentum, and Tonight)

Carrollton (like a modern blues/southern rock band doing hymns. All their albums are great, even if I can never remember how many double letters are in their name.)

Rhett Walker Band (very similar to the above. Let me make it clear I don't seek out southern rock on my own, but everyone who knows my love for Needtobreathe recommends bands that even remotely sound similar. None have topped Needtobreathe for me, but these guys are also fantastic.)

Solo Artists I Love More For Their Songwriting Than Their Sound But Their Sound Is Still Good:

Jimmy Needham (motown/jazz/alternative? I have seen this guy twice in concert, he is a clever and beautiful soul with a zeal for the Gospel like few people I know. Lots of variation in sound, he is just a fabulous musician, and is also one of those people I have said "can I marry your voice sir" so um. Start with Clear the Stage or Vice and Virtue maybe but I don't have a favorite of his, I love all his albums.)

Rich Mullins (So much of Christian music heritage we owe to this man. Folk/blues/soft rock/modern hymnity. He is my hero. His Ragamuffin band is the story behind my url. Start with his album simply titled Songs)

Andrew Peterson (takes a lot of creative inspiration from Rich. One of my favorite writers/creatives in general. His vocals are a little of an acquired taste maybe. He gave me storytelling advice one time. More folksy/bluegrassy in earlier years. I'd recommend the albums Counting Stars or Light for the Lost Boy to start)

Keith Green (between Keith and Rich, you have like 30% of the foundation of good Christian music. Do a quick google search of his songs and see if any look familiar - several are sung as hymns in churches across the nation...or were...in my childhood. Amazing lyricist and musician, don't let his hair fool you.)

Chris Rice (blues/folk/soft pop maybe? Idk, his music is like a rainy autumn afternoon, where the sun pokes through and reminds you that summer exists. Bless. What a Heart is Beating For is my favorite album.)

Steven Curtis Chapman. (A well-known legend, but his stuff is truly amazing. Start with his older albums like Declaration.)

Paul Colman/Paul Colman Trio (A weird one, kinda rock. Australian. Sharp guy, hysterical in person, not afraid to say things that need to be said. New Map of the World and From the Saltland to the River are both great albums.)

Jason Gray (more mainstream, but he deserves to be listened to. Amazing songwriter. Love Will Have the Final Word is my current go-to.)

Todd Agnew (used to get played a lot, but he is actually really great. Solid lyrics, good sound. Reflection of Something is my album of choice from him.)

Ross King (Good friend of Jimmy Needham's, and that's how I know of him. Not only does he write incredible songs like "Hallelujah for the Cross" but he also wrote a kids album with songs like "Lionmonkeybacondonkey" so check him out for sure.)

I don't listen to rap much, but I hear good things about Lecrae, Flame, and Trip Lee. I also tend not to listen to straight out gospel bands, or southern gospel bands for that matter lol, straight country, or straight pop. Alternative folkrock is probably the best way to describe 90% of my own tastes.

I know I'm leaving out a bunch of people I listen to, but there's a few.

5) Lyrics (be it meaningfulness, rhymeiness, creativity, or just generally being fun to sing)

6) Bonus points for dark humor, but I don’t necessarily expect that from a Christian song lol

Normally I’d rather keep whatever is bothering me to myself but if I’ve had a bad dream I’ve probably woken Beth up anyway. I feel bad about taking away any extra minutes of sleep from her but when she asks me what’s wrong with those big concerned eyes of hers, I pretty much have to tell her

Big spoon. Beth’s so little that I can just pull her in close

James Bay. Beth caught me humming one of his songs to her succulents once and she’ll never let me live it down

Not a very frequent one

As a boxer I’ve always had the advantages of having a team behind me but in the end it always comes down to me. I’m coming to realize how much I want to be part of a team now though

Probably a superhero when I was really young. There’s nothing better than running around in your underwear with a towel tied around your shoulders like a cap

Flowers. Beth always smells like plants and flowers even when she hasn’t been gardening or gone to a class in a greenhouse

2017 Superhero Movies

We have four big superhero releases coming this year, one entry from 20th Century Fox, two from Warner Bros for the DC Cinematic Universe (or 'Extended Universe' as it's apparently being called) and 2017 marks the first time we get three entries for the MCU.

So, what have we got?

LOGAN

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that Hugh Jackman is finally hanging up his claws.  Jackman has played Wolverine in every film to from the first X-MEN back in 2000, to the most recent X-MEN: APOCALYPSE.  He's only missed an appearance in DEADPOOL, which was a bit of shame, but in his 17th year of playing the cigar-chomping Canadian mutant, Jackman has decided enough is enough.  Director James Mangold returns from the last solo outing for the character (THE WOLVERINE), but this film looks like a very different beast. 

The trailers and pictures popping up here and there online, show something more arty, perhaps?  There's an aged tension there, with a beared Logan looking after a weakened Charles Xavier (played once again by Patrick Stewart, possibly in his last appearance for the franchise too).

For a simple explanation I'll now attach a poster, that Jackman himself put up on his twitter.

Whilst I completely understand Jackman's decision to retire (he's an aging actor that plays a character that's essentially immortal (*essentially*), but 20th Century Fox but realise they're about to suffer a huge loss.  Sure they've now got Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, but we don't know how effectively they can sync the 'merc with a mouth' in with the rest of the X-Men team.  They seem to be putting a few eggs in the Channing Tatum starring GAMBIT film (that was originally slated to debut in 2016 btw), and those rumours of Jennifer Lawrence making some solo turns as Mystique seem to have dissolved.  Let's hope Jackman's last swan song is a fitting tribute to his previous appearances.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2

I'll be straight up with this one - THIS is the film I'm looking forward to the most in 2017 (at least when it comes to the big SH franchises).  GOTG was a massively entertaining film and will certainly be a hard one to top.  Director James Gunn certainly seems up to the task, with the first couple of trailers showing little, but entertaining a lot.  Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista reprise their roles has Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax respectively.  Bradley Cooper also returns as the voice of Rocket Raccon, but already the star of the show looks to be Baby Groot (again voiced by Vin Diesel)

Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Karen Gillan (Nebula), both villains in the first one are reportedly to join the gang this time around, and we have lots of new characters to look forward to - Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha and Kurt Russell as Ego the living planet. (although, apparently we won't be seeing him as a planet?).  There are also rumours that fanboy favourite Nathan Fillion will appear as Wonder Man, and Sly Stallone has a role!  I, for one, cannot wait - and let's not forget, this is only the first of this year's MCU offerings! (Also remember, next year we finally get the team up we've all been waiting for, as the guardians appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, so it'll be very interesting to see when Gunn leaves these characters at the end of this film.  Exciting!)

WONDER WOMAN

Okay, let's be honest, BATMAN V SUPERMAN was not the film anyone hoped it would be.  One positive to come from the film though was Gal Gadot's turn as Diana Prince. 

The DC Extended Universe has got off to a rocky start so far, but WONDER WOMAN may turn that around.  It's certainly been a long time coming, but Gal Gadot does have the honour of releasing the first proper female-lead superflick.  It's fitting that it should be WW.  The trailer's look like we might be getting a sort of Captain America/Thor cross, with some dark and dank war-torn scenery contrasting some beautiful Amazonian imagery. STAR TREK actor Chris Pine gets to play Diana's love interest, and we have major roles for Robin Wright (HOUSE OF CARDS), Danny Huston (X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) with Connie Nielsen playing Diana's mother Queen Hippolyta. Comedy will be coming from Lucy Davis (THE OFFICE - the UK version).  With WONDER WOMAN the last entry before JUSTICE LEAGUE, it'll be interesting to see how direct a lead in it will be... and whether Ben Affleck has filmed any secret cameos?

Note: Director Patty Jenkins was originally meant to direct Marvel's THOR: THE DARK WORLD, but it didn't pan out for whatever reason. 

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Well, it's been a rocky road for our friendly neighbourhood webslinger, hasn't it?  First Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN 2 were loved by all, but then SPIDER-MAN 3 didn't live up to expectations.  Rather that soldier on, and make the best SPIDER-MAN 4 they could, Sony cut and run... running straight into an ill-advised reboot, with Andrew Garfield replacing Tobey Maguire in a much darker toned take.  If there's one good thing from it, it was the very workable onscreen chemistry between Peter Paker and Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy, but the dismal THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 shattered the studio's hopes of a 'shared universe' and the two sequels and possible spin-offs very all scrapped.  It was sad, but also... lead to the most famous Marvel character being allowed to play in the same sandbox as the majority of all the other Marvel characters (minus X-Men and Fantastic Four, of course). 

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will be the first co-adventure between Sony and Marvel Studios, with Tom Holland having had a little try out in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.  To prove that's a two-way process, Robert Downey Jr will be appearing as Iron Man (joined by Happy Hogan - Jon Favreau returning to the role for the first time since IRON MAN 3).  Marisa Tomei will continue to play the hottest Aunt May we've seen on film, and whilst little is known about the story, we do know that Michael Keaton (BATMAN) will be playing the main villain, Vulture. 

Of course, the main USP of the MCU's take on Spidey, is that they've actually cast a teenager as Parker, allowing for more school-time adventures... so it should come as no surprise a lot of the announced cast are 'young adults'.  There are plenty of known actors in the mix too - notably Bokeem Woodbine, who will be playing Shocker, and Donald Glover, perhaps a nod to the fact he voiced Miles Morales, the next Spider-Man! (Don't expect him to play that character though).  No sign of J Jonah Jameson yet, surely a character Marvel would wish to bring in asap.  Or maybe have they already?  They've been known to take liberties with race and gender (RE: Tilda Swinton in DOCTOR STRANGE), and let's be honest... we don't know who Tyne Daly is playing yet?  Just saying...

THOR: RAGNAROK

I really liked THOR, it was a nice surprised.  THOR: THE DARK WORLD, though... lacked something.  So far though, everything points to RAGNAROK as being the best of the trilogy... and an all round solid entry for the MCU.

'Ragnarok' is, essentially, known as the Asgardian apocalypse, where pretty much all the Asgardians are likely die... all except Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and possibly Loki (Tom Hiddleston).  That's a pretty big promise.  Another promise is that we're not likely to spend as much time on Earth as we have in the previous films. This is good.  It also means though we can expect no appearances from Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard or Kat Dennings on this occasion.

But don't be too upset, because who we're getting instead is far more impressive.  Thor's fellow Avenger Dr Bruce Banner aka The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will be featured heavily, in what very much sounds like a loose adaption of PLANET HULK, a popular story in the comics.  Yep, we're going to see Thor v Hulk in a gladiatorial style arena.  Brilliant.  Also brilliant, as hinted at in a previous film, Benedict Cumberbatch will be appearing as Doctor Strange!

Aside from returning actors Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins and Jaimie Alexander (Heimdall, Odin and Sif, respectively), we get new blood in Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster and Cate Blanchett as Hela!

Everything points to this film being epic, and a very important entry as we move closer to the epic AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.  Rumours continue that Blanchett's Hela may stand in for Death... ie, Thanos' true love, the one he wants to get the Infinity stones for etc... interesting.  Very interesting.

But on to our last Superhero entry for 2017...

JUSTICE LEAGUE

As I've already mentioned, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE was a bit of a disappointment.  Too dark for it's own good, little humour, and some silly plot devices.  Apparently director Zack Snyder and writer Chris Terrio have learnt their lessons and JUSTICE LEAGUE will be lighter in tone... but will still be BIG.  And so it should be!

For many, this is the big one.  This is the one Warner Bros and the DCEU need to get right.  Joss Whedon delivered one hell of a film when he turned in THE AVENGERS for MCU, and now Zack Snyder needs to do the same.  As you can see in the picture, we've got Ben Affleck returning as Batman, Gal Gadot back as Wonder Woman, and our first true looks at Ray Fisher's Cyborg, Ezra Miller's Flash and Jason Mamoa's Aquaman.

Let's not forget Henry Cavill's Superman will be back from the dead, and we've got a lot of other familiar faces returning too... Amy Adams' Lois Lane is likely to play a key role again, Jeremy Irons returns as Alfred, Diane Lane will be back as Martha Kent and Jesse Eisenberg is confirmed to return as Lex Luther (*grumble*, serious the worst casting it annoys me to even write it).  We have new characters too, such as Amber Heard's Mera, Ciaran Hinds' Steppenwolf and JK Simmons brings us Commissioner Gordon, amongst others. 

We don't really know the plot yet, but that's okay.  Fingers crossed they nail it.  Quite frankly, the rest of their film franchise may well be resting on it.
