CANDLE IN THE WIND
An old abandoned candle factory is something you don't get to see very often. Especially one that has been abandoned many years ago, yet still shows no trace of vandalism; only natural decay...

When you see these two 19th century mansions located next to each other, you would not suspect that a gem of industrial heritage is hidden behind the protected rococo facades. Both houses, although empty, still offered some nice corners, but the real surprise lay in the small factory behind them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The brick building was originally used as a gin distillery, probably in the mid-19th century. However, around the turn of the century it was transformed into a candle factory.

Candles were mainly made for churches and chapels, such as Easter candles. The factory remained active until the mid-1980s and has been frozen in time ever since.

More than 40 years later, the entire building is threatened with demolition to make way for new apartment buildings. However, both houses were included in the inventory of architectural heritage. The permit to demolish all buildings was issued by the city, but was annulled after an appeal procedure before the Council for Permit Disputes. Two years have now passed and there appears to be no further movement in the demolition and construction...

Antoinette's most infamous beauty practice was cleansing with Eau Cosmetique de Pigeon, which, yes, was crafted using the bird itself. According to The Toilette of Health, Beauty, and Fashion, the recipe, popularized by Danish women, included the juice of water lilies, melons, cucumbers, and lemons, as well as the crumbs of French rolls, white whine, and stewed pigeons among other curiosities. After washing up with the concoction, she'd tone her skin with her choice astringent, Eau des Charmes, made of "drops exuded by grapevines in May." Finally, her signature face mask (which is still popular in France today) for a fresh, glowing complexion was made from two teaspoons of circulation-stimulating cognac, 1/3 cup of cell-renewing dry milk powder, brightening lemon juice, and one egg white.

Allegory of Peace and War
Artist: Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (Italian, 1708–1787)
Date: 1776
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Art Institute of Chicago
Pompeo Batoni’s grand portraits and numerous religious and historical commissions established him as the leading Roman painter of his day. He painted Peace and War on his own initiative, without a commission, attracting critical praise for the work’s graceful invention. It combines elements of Rococo softness and eroticism with the newly fashionable Neoclassical style. War, represented by the god Mars, is restrained by a personification of peace, who bears an olive branch.
