There are many factors that go into creating something truly magnificent. Often it takes ingenuity, a creative touch, patience, and a lot of perseverance. Not to mention bravery. Sometimes the creations are timeless, whether that be for a practical purpose like the invention of the light bulb or for a more spiritually fulfilling purpose like music. Despite this innovations such as these change form slightly as time progresses, however if one were to go back and look at something like a table from as far back as physical historical artifacts can be found, it can still be recognized for the purpose that it serves. Whether the table is made of plastic from 100 years ago or even Dysprosil from modern day. However none of that matters in the long run, because as previously stated time continues moving forward and so does innovation. It is very rare that the best inventions are ever made, after all the best creations are always the ones where eventually society can no longer live without them. Imagining a world where the thing an individual is most dependent on is missing, is quite often devastating. That is especially the case when it comes to the newest form of AI technology. And it is on that note that our story truly begins.

The towering building of Baseline Robotics™ glimmered as the rolling holographic advertisement displayed along the outside shifted to the customary greeting message as the doors unlocked before Y/N. Walking into the surprisingly empty lobby they immediately noticed that the interior decorations seemed to be going for a theme of alien hospital. Everything seemed to be white or a reflective silver and it was very nearly maddening in it’s sterility. However what caught Y/N’s attention was a stiff pure white couch that laid empty. It seemed like nobody had ever sat down on it, whether that be from fear of staining it or how uncomfortable it appeared to be was yet to be determined. Despite this observation Y/N sat down, albeit hesitantly. Soon people began to enter the building and walk down one of the two brightly lit hallways, turning either immediately left or the right while not a single person entered the large door at the end of the middle hallway.
They had never been to Baseline Robotics™ as they never really saw a need to before now. AI was an essential part of society and for that Y/N was grateful that robotics companies existed. Without the people who can make the AI that is essential to daily tasks like driving, or customer service life would be far more difficult. And thus cities like Canphia wouldn’t exist. However recently Baseline Robotics™ had begun the shift from functional robots and computer programs to fully autonomous androids. Androids of course had already existed for a few years short of two centuries, but never had they ever looked so realistic. The only thing preventing them from being fully human was the lack of emotions. But since most androids were expensive and thus they were employed as nannies and maids in only the richest households. Being able to get angry or excited would make them neglect their duties and so nobody ever considered creating an android capable of emotions. And thus Y/N had never even considered going into the Baseline building. Besides what would a college student ever need with a robot servant.
“Greetings! How can we help you today?” A robotic voice asked Y/N as it wheeled closer to them.
“I’m here to answer the ad requesting volunteers for an experiment,” Y/N responded carefully.
“Follow me!” The robot chirped as it turned abruptly towards the hallway behind it, eventually both Y/N and the robot reached the door that nobody else had entered. The robot whirred softly as it unlocked the door in front of it,”Please enter and someone will be with you shortly.”

“Hello, you must be here for the experiment. I’m Researcher Ino, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” The young woman was grinning excitedly at Y/N as she extended a hand towards them.
Reaching a hand out to shake Ino’s Y/N introduced themself quickly before they were suddenly being taken down a hallway by conveyor belt. It led down a series of short confined hallways before abruptly opening up into a large production floor similar to the ones that create cars.
“So Y/N before we get started with the paperwork I’d like to ask you some quick questions,” Ino hummed as she looked over the documents displayed on her Holo-Cast.
“Go ahead Ino.”
“Why did you want to sign up for this?”
“Well…” Y/N hesitated, to say they were embarrassed at their reasoning for signing up was an understatement, but figuring honesty was the best way to go they continued to speak. “I moved to Canphia about six months ago and it’s been very hard for me to make any meaningful relationships so most of my free time is spent alone at home. I figured that since I don’t really ever do anything I could dedicate my spare time to assisting the behind the scenes science that goes into creating the AI we depend on.”
“Is there anything in particular that’s been preventing you from making friends?” the researcher inquired pleasantly.
“If you haven’t noticed yet I have a difficult time speaking Katlior so it’s harder for me to communicate.” Y/N confessed with a light shrug as they entered Ino’s office.
“Well Y/N I believe that you will be a perfect candidate for the experiment. With your help we might be able to finally take the last step in advancing AI technology. Welcome to the team.”

It had been eight months of working with Ino and Y/N was excited to finally see what all their work was being put towards. If someone asked them if their time spent in the labs was helpful, Y/N in all honesty would have answered no. All they did was take silly personality quizzes about themself and their relationships that inevitably lead nowhere interesting or have conversations with the same four bot programs. The strangest things that they encountered in the lab however were the days where Ino would sit with Y/N and eat a meal while they discussed normal things for two people who are getting to know each other, like hobbies, interests and ideal types of all things. And what made this the strangest of the lab days was the fact that Ino would always take notes during their conversations, so the conversations were always a little awkward.
Nonetheless Y/N was excited as earlier today Ino had mentioned that they needed to come into the lab a day early. She wouldn’t tell them exactly why they needed to come in but she sounded very excited and that made Y/N excited.

By the time Y/N had arrived at Borderline Robotics™ Ino was very nearly bouncing off the walls from how exhilarated she was at what she was about to unveil to Y/N. When they walked in she immediately jumped on them, wrapping an arm around Y/N’s shoulders while talking a mile a minute. “Ah you’re here! I called you in because we’re finally ready to begin the next stage of testing, and I have a feeling you’re going to love exactly what this stage entails. So if you would follow me I need to brief you on exactly what you’re about to experience so you’re prepared for this breakthrough. Okay let’s go!”
“Ino where exactly are we going? Isn’t the lab the other way?”
“Yep but today we’re going somewhere else.”
“...I’m so confused,” Y/N shook their head as they walked down the otherwise silent hallway. Ino grinned as she unlocked a door leading to a spiraling staircase and ushering Y/N to follow her down.
“We need to go to the lab with the highest security clearance today, after all it’s not every day where you get so far in creating the first autonomous AI with emotions. So yeah, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, that’s what all the testing has been for Y/N. We want to be able replicate emotions in our autonomous AIs. So the information you gave us was used to create a personalized android based off of characteristics that you favored in the tests, and from that we created a personality for your android. She is as realistic as possible and fulfills the purpose you wanted, with a little extra thrown in too!” Ino was still talking very quickly and when combined with the endless winding of the staircase it served to only further disorient Y/N.
Frustrated at their lack of comprehension on the topic Ino was babbling on and on about Y/N grabbed Ino's arm and stopped her both from talking and walking. “Ino please slow down, I'm not following. What purpose did I ever say I wanted an android for?” Y/N said exasperated. Ino blinked at them, her mouth falling into an open o shape.
Looking away from them she flushed, when she spoke her speech had slowed down considerably, “Well you didn't explicitly say you wanted her to have a particular purpose but I assumed that you would like it if her purpose was to be a companion for you. You did say that making friends was hard due to your limited language skills so with her you would always have a friend. And on top of that we also gave her the ability to speak every known human language, so no matter where you go with her, she will always be able to help you with the language of that country.” She looked back at Y/N with a shy smile and continued, “She is going to be a complete sweetheart to you. I can tell you that, I programmed her personally. If all goes well with us fully waking her up, you and the other participants will all be able to take home your personalized android to continue testing. Our goal is to see if it’s possible to have an android with a near full range of human emotion that would allow them to do jobs that are stressful, dangerous and need careful action, while still maintaining the capability to de escalate and comfort those in need. Like… search and rescue paramedics or firefighters! And by having willing participants take the androids out and fully immerse them in day to day life, it will definitely prove if it’s possible.”
“What happens to her if the experiment succeeds? After it’s over I mean. Will she be scrapped?” Y/N said as they stared at the door at the bottom of the stairs.
“Of course not Y/N-san, she would continue living just like how she was before the end of the experiment, minus all the mandatory testings she needs to undergo… Oh that reminds me, before I introduce you to her there are some things you need to know, you know rules and the like,” she said now slowly descending down the remaining stairs to the door. Y/N now relieved at knowing what was about to happen when they entered the lab, followed after her, ready to listen intently to the rules they needed to follow.
“So first of all since this is an experimental form of AI you are going to have to bring her in biweekly for the first four months for little check ups, as there might be some problems with either the physical body she inhabits or glitches in her programming. If you happen to find any before the next check up feel free to bring her in before then, and we’ll fix her right up! Number two, she needs to be charged every 32 hours. She is able to use the solar panels embedded into her skin to self charge in direct sunlight but if she doesn’t get any direct sunlight and her battery starts to get low, then you will have to plug her in. Number three, while charging with the cord in she is not to do any energy consuming activities, so laying down or sitting are the best options. Light activity such as walking a very short distance is possible but not strongly advised, listening to music or watching children’s television shows will be fine, just make sure she won’t be processing any heavy amounts of information or moving too much. The last thing is less important for you to know but nonetheless, number four she is waterproofed so she is able to interact with water without being damaged. However just because she can wash dishes, walk in the rain and shower does NOT mean she can be fully submerged in water. So no baths or going scuba diving with her. Wading in a pool or lake is possible although not recommended.“
Y/N nodded sincerely as they programmed the instructions into their Holo-Cast so they wouldn’t forget them after leaving the lab, and despite their focus and serious diligence in recording the rules Ino could tell that they were excited. After all they were barely containing a smile as she opened the door to the room where the androids were all just awakening. Y/N looked up from what they were doing as Ino motioned for them to follow her into the room.
Once in the room Ino quietly greeted her two fellow researchers as she guided Y/N past all the other pairings in the room and over to the single lone android. Ino stopped a few steps from where the android was sitting on the table, there was nothing on the table beside her but the blanket that at one point covered her body before her awakening. Disappointed but not surprised, Ino nudged Y/N forward to meet her while she went to go get the bag of the things the android would need, “Hinata, I have someone here to meet you.” She said, causing the android to turn her head and look at the pair.
“Hello, I’m Hinata,” she said inquisitively.
“Hello Hinata, I’m Y/N. It’s nice to meet you,” Y/N responded enthusiastically albeit they did feel slightly uncomfortable due to the others around them already having extensive conversations.
“Hi!!” Hinata said enthusiastically, she seemed to be a very bright and nearly childlike person and that made Y/N smile softly at her. They truly didn’t know what to say to Hinata and thus their conversations were short, and the silences between them long.
Ino soon returned with a very large duffel bag and handed it off to Hinata’s waiting arms, “You’re going to be living with them from now on Hinata, that means you can leave the lab!” Hinata looked at Y/N intently and nodded slowly. She was starting to realize what the humans wanted from the other androids and she was wondering if Y/N was the same way.
“Y/N one thing before you leave, feel free to bring her by anytime you want. We’d all love to see how you’re both doing. Okay?” Ino interjected as Hinata put on her jacket so the pair could leave. Y/N smiled graciously as they agreed to stop by sometime soon. And with that they left with Hinata in tow.

The pair were silent as they ascended the stairs, not a word was spoken between them until they got outside of the building at which point the bubble of awkward tension burst between them. Hinata reached out in a move that mirrored the one that Y/N did to Ino not even a half hour earlier. “What am I to you Y/N? I know all of us were created with a role in mind and I want to know the one you think I’m going to play.” Hinata said intensely, her eyes were locked on Y/N as she spoke.
“It’s embarrassing to admit but I want you to be my friend. I moved here a year ago and despite spending time with my classmates after lectures I haven’t been able to make any real friends by myself due to a strong language barrier between us. I can understand if you-”
Y/N had looked away from Hinata in shame while they spoke and they only looked back after Hinata’s once hard and quite frankly intimidating voice softened, “Do you really mean you want to be friends? You’re not going to make me into a servant or something?”
Y/N blinked in shock at how quickly her attitude changed but nodded with a smile, "No Hinata, I’m not going to make you my servant. I want to be friends, although in all honesty I wouldn’t mind if you help with chores sometimes…” They trailed off as Hinata laughed brightly. She intertwined their hands and swung them back and forth as they walked away from Baseline Robotics™.
“Can we go to a zoo? I want to see a real life hippopotamus Y/N!” Hinata asked excitedly. Y/N nodded as they giggled, Hinata was just so full of wonder at everything and it was endearing.
“Of course we can Hinata, you little sweetheart.”
They hadn’t gotten more than a block away when Y/N’s Holo-Cast lit up with a call from Ino. It was strange that Ino was calling them so soon after leaving but thinking it might be important Y/N picked up the call. As soon as they hit the receive option Ino’s frantic voice was heard, “Oh thank goodness you’re okay! You need to bring Hinata back here right now for deactivation befo-”
“Deactivation? Ino what the hell are you talking about? Hinata hasn’t done anything to me other than hold my hand,” Y/N said while looking at Hinata who looked just as confused.
“The other androids, they just... flipped out all of the sudden and attacked the volunteers. Most of the humans were sent to the emergency room from the damage the androids caused. We were supposed to have a program put in that stopped them from harming their humans unless they were in direct danger but the volunteers were all just trying to leave to go home and the androids just went crazy unprovoked… Y/N are you sure Hinata isn’t going to-”
This time Hinata cut Ino off, “Why would I ever want to hurt my friend Researcher Ino? We are even going to the zoo together, I really want to see a real life hippo! Please don’t take me away from Y/N, i really like them… ” Hinata was pouting at the idea of not getting to spend time with her new best friend when they had met.
Ino paused her pleas as she realized that Hinata must have not seen Y/N as a threat judging by the behaviour Y/N described and the way that Hinata spoke of them.
In shock from Hinata at all but admitting that she would have lashed out in anger had their conversation gone differently, Y/N looked at the small form of Hinata who was now crouched down and cooing at a pigeon, having been distracted from the conversation at hand by the small avian’s appearance. “She doesn’t seem to want to hurt me,” Y/N thought, “And if she was going to do it she would have done it when everyone else did. Plus she acts a lot like a child, so I doubt she would do it now.”
Ino sighed, “It’s your limbs that are at stake here. Fine, if you feel safe, then...carry on your way then.”
The last thing Y/N saw before the call ended was Ino shaking her head in disbelief. With a chuckle Y/N called out to Hinata, “You heard the woman! Let’s roll out.”
“Okie Dokie!” Hinata affirmed, reaching for Y/N’s hand once more. Swinging their intertwined hands between them as they walked to the zoo.

Two weeks later Y/N and Hinata went in for the first scheduled check up, where amazingly Ino found the same abnormalities in her code as the other androids displayed; and yet she still didn't attack Y/N. Outwardly there was no evidence of violent tendencies anywhere in Hinata. “But the code doesn't lie, so what made her refrain from attacking Y/N?” Ino thought aloud as she watched the physical portion of the check up from a safe distance.
Everything seemed to be going how it should be going and despite the excitement her colleagues were showing at having a working android, Ino thought that she needed to be deactivated like the others or at least reprogrammed.
When the other researcher finished with Hinata, Ino got an idea. The best way to find out a person's reasoning behind their actions is the simplest way. To ask them. She took a deep breath and walked over, rehearsing what she'd say in her head on the way over. Putting a hand on Hinata’s shoulder Ino carefully asked her the question all the while trying to not to give away her true intentions.
“Hello Hinata I'm happy to report that the physical evaluation shows you are in perfect condition, Y/N must be taking good care of you," That got a smile and a pleased nod from the android. Ino patted her shoulder and continued, "But I do have a question for you in regards to your code. You see when we were looking at your coding today during the psych testing, we found the same anomaly that caused the other androids to attack their human volunteers, in you, and yet you were the only one not to attack anyone. So I figured I'd ask you what all us researchers were thinking, why didn't you attack Y/N?”
“They wanted me to be their friend, and I wanted to be their friend too! Friends don't hurt friends Ino,” Hinata said cheerfully. She looked towards Y/N like a child looking to their parent for affirmation of their good behaviour. Y/N smiled at her and squeezed her hand as they watched Ino take notes.
“Well as much as I would like to take out that particular section of code that created the violent behavior, I have been ordered by the higher ups to leave it in as they don’t want to potentially compromise Hinata. Plus if she says she’s not going to act on it, I suppose we'll just have to trust her," Ino gave a good natured smile directed at Hinata before continuing, "However I will implement a tell that would allow you, Y/N to see if she's getting to a state where she would act violent.” Ino said as she plugged some of the cords that were laying next to the table Hinata was sitting on into the nape of Hinata's neck; quickly pulling out a tablet, Ino typed out a sequence of numbers and letters before setting the tablet back down. Turning back to the pair she grinned, "and now we wait for it to upload, Hinata just make sure to lay down otherwise your balance could get a little wonky. You'll undergo a quick recalibration of the senses and all that, and then you're free."
Hinata nodded and laid down carefully, Y/N kept a hand on her back to help guide her down. Their face betrayed a look of shock and a hesitation that looked closer to fear than worry to Ino as by now Hinata's eyes had turned a milky white to allow for the update to her code to complete.
"Don't you worry about the eyes Y/N, that's supposed to happen. Any update to her code or recalibration of her senses will limit her sight in order to not overwhelm her in the process. You probably haven't had to charge her using the cord yet but you'll notice her eyes will do that when charging as well."
Y/N shook their head, shaking the image of Hinata sitting in a dark room looking limp with wires coming off her body and her eyes as empty as a corpse. In a quick attempt to permanently banish the thought from their brain they looked at Ino and spoke once more. “And what is the tell you put in, Ino? You're being very vague…” Y/N inquired, wary.
Ino handed Y/N a sheet of paper as she spoke, “Her hair will lighten when she’s in a bad mood, and darken when she's in a good mood. The lighter it is the worse her mood is, the darker her hair is the better her mood is. If she's sad, it will have blue in it. And embarrassment will create a pink tinge to the tips of her hair. Both of the last two are because she has no fluids to convey those types of emotions, and with plenty of deliberation between the researchers we determined they’re both essential."
Y/N was not convinced that this whole "tell" thing wasn't a predetermined plan instead of the on the fly programming that Ino was trying to make it look like it was. After all why else would she have a sheet of paper already printed off with a comprehensive guide to the colouring of Hinata's hair?
Realizing that Y/N had caught on, Ino hurriedly got Hinata unhooked so that the pointed look Ino was being given wouldn’t turn into another question, "Okay you are both ready to go, see you in two weeks.

“Y/N can we watch Iron Man again? Pretty please?” Hinata whined.
“No, but only because you were whining again. Remember what we talked about Hinata, we don't whine to get what we want.” Y/N chided as they put on their coat.
Hinata slumped down in the chair, she was disappointed in herself for making Y/N upset at her again. She was really trying to act more sophisticated and not like a toddler but everything was so new to her and she wanted to see it all, but it was just so hard to curb her enthusiasm for life when her wants were sidelined to more important things. But she would have to try harder so that Y/N wouldn’t be upset at her anymore.
“Hinata! Sweetheart, I know you’re sulking out there. Get up and come put your shoes on so that we can go out, my friends are waiting for us at the restaurant and I don’t want to be late,” Y/N called out from in front of the door. Standing up, Hinata smoothed the wrinkles out of her clothes and walked over to where Y/N stood.

“Hello Sakura. How are you?” Y/N stood with Hinata beside them as they greeted the back of a person.
The woman turned to face Y/N as if she was surprised that they had spoken to them, when she locked eyes with Y/N she immediately began to smile. Sakura stood up, her short pink hair bouncing as she pulled Y/N into a hug,“Y/N! There you are, it felt like you were never going to meet up with us again. Sai and I were missing you.” After pulling away she looked at Hinata and spoke again, “Who’s this Y/N?”
Y/N grabbed Hinata’s hand as they spoke, “This is Hinata, she’s my friend and roommate.”
Hinata was pleased by finally being acknowledged by Sakura, she smiled timidly and waved at the girl, the ends of her hair shifting to a rosy pink , “It's nice to meet you Sakura.” Her voice was gentle when she spoke, she really wanted to appear as mature and polite as possible so that Y/N would be even more happy, so she let Sakura tug her down into the seat next to her.
Y/N sat across from her and immediately turned to talk to the person next to them. His voice was deep when he spoke and had a strange way of pronouncing Katlio that led Hinata to believe he must be foreign, and therefore probably the Sai that Sakura mentioned.
Sai had fully black eyes and his arms were covered in slowly morphing tattoos. Hinata was shocked, she didn't know that humans could come out like that, it made her feel very strange, she couldn't quite place the emotion she was feeling when she saw the human.
What she did know was she absolutely hated the way that Y/N was looking at him.
“Examining his tattoos Hinata?” Sakura teased from beside her, “They are really cool I will admit. But still tell us about yourself. Where are you from, how did you meet Y/N, you know all the good stuff.” She tossed her hair as she spoke although it didn't go very far due to its cropped length.
Y/N spun their head to look at Hinata directly in the eyes, they were silently pleading with her to not reveal that she was an android. Hinata didn’t like knowing she had to lie but she understood that she needed to do it to keep Y/N happy. So after sending a reassuring smile to Y/N she turned back to Sakura. Carefully and with practiced grace, as if she was a spider moving across the strands of it’s web to trap a still fluttering butterfly, she began to spin her lie, “Well…it’s not a very exciting story guys. I was born in Canphia but moved away when I was really young. I recently came back to the city and the two of us met through a mutual friend not too long ago and we hit it off. Y/N asked if I wanted to be their roommate after they found out I was looking for a place.” Hinata shrugged nonchalantly after she spoke, Sakura seemed pleased with her answer and thus turned her attention to Sai. Hinata immediately looked over at Y/N with the hope that she did a good job.
Y/N smiled at her in relief and thinking she looked a lot like a puppy reached over and ruffled Hinata’s hair. So far, having Hinata around was going really well for Y/N because even though they still weren’t the best at Canphia’s unique language they got confidence in knowing that they had someone who would always be able to help them out.

When Y/N and Hinata arrived home from the diner, Hinata grabbed Y/N’s hands and stopped them from going inside the apartment. When they looked at her in confusion she giggled nervously, the tips of her hair going light pink for the second time that day, “I saw something in a drama and I want to try it. May I Y/N?” She tilted her head in inquisition and waited for their answer.
“As long as it’s not going to hurt anyone then sure,” Y/N responded.
Hinata smiled at them, went up on her tiptoes and placed a gentle, lingering kiss on Y/N’s forehead, “It’s not because I love you, it’s because I love only you. If it’s not you then I won’t have anyone else.” When she pulled away she was smiling very brightly, she had been wondering why the men in movies always did this sort of thing to people they like, but after doing it herself, she could completely understand why. It felt really nice to show affection like that, so much so that it created a small fluttering deep inside her chest.
After a beat of stunned silence Y/N blinked repeatedly at her as they spoke, “Are you quoting an old romance drama at me? Remind me to no longer watch sappy shows with you.” With a good natured eyeroll that Hinata could tell wasn’t genuine annoyance, Y/N dragged her inside.
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘∙•⋅⋅⋅•⋅⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
Hinata and Y/N had been meeting up with Sai and Sakura every Saturday for months now and although the number of people who attended, the food ordered and the conversations had were always different, the one thing Hinata could expect during these times was to be ignored by the group of humans and only used as a translator by Y/N. She was always kept at an arm's length and unless she forcefully inserted herself into the conversation nobody would seem to notice she was even there, not even her best friend and roommate, the beautiful shining and incredibly social butterfly, Y/N.
They used to do almost everything together. From grocery shopping and cleaning, to going out to the movies Hinata and Y/N were inseparable, no matter what they were doing they would always make it fun. Nothing was done around each other without trying to make the other laugh. Throwing popcorn, random tickle fights and long cuddle sessions on the couch when Y/N had a stressful day. Hinata cherished all of the moments they spent together, but now Hinata was not sure Y/N felt the same.
But then it changed.
Soon Hinata practically had to beg for a simple good morning from Y/N. They had been coming home from school and immediately retreating into their room. They didn’t come out for anything and the light would stay on until very late into the night. Hinata tried everything to get their attention and yet no matter what she did none of it mattered because they never saw it. It was like she didn't even exist to her butterfly anymore.
Afterall what is the spider who must stay grounded on her web to the butterfly with the freedom to explore not only the skies but the world below.
She even had to go to her last biweekly checkup without them, and those days were always spent together no matter how busy Y/N was.
Then just that morning Y/N had asked Hinata to come with them to lunch and she was ecstatic, she dressed up nicely and did her hair just the way Y/N liked it. Soft bangs styled to frame her face, with the rest of her hair cascading down her back, it was perfect for them to run their hands through, but that same hair which was normally a deep purple, nearing black was now a striking platinum blonde.
She was at one point during the walk to the diner, hopeful that her relationship with Y/N would go back to normal and yet here she was still being ignored after months of the same torture over and over again. And any hope of waiting for things to go back to normal was crushed as the new guy, Neji wrapped his arm around Y/N's waist. He had been flirting with Y/N the whole time and what was making it positively intolerable was the fact that Hinata had to keep translating the flirtatious comments to Y/N.
And what made it worse were the reactions Y/N gave. With every laugh and turn of their head to hide their flustered face, or the casual touches that Y/N would reciprocate Neji’s advances with, Hinata felt a sharp pain in her chest. Like a knife being shoved in and twisted. Hinata was starting to resent her creators for giving her the capability to feel. What exactly she was feeling was a mystery to Hinata but she knew that it hurt. It hurt a lot.
After over an hour of being positively miserable Hinata had finally had enough. Abruptly standing up she stormed out of the diner. As she left she accidentally knocked over the chair she was sitting in and the clang of the metal chair hitting the floor caused the conversation at her table to screech to a halt.
Y/N was extremely embarrassed by her behavioural changes and they apologized for Hinata. Excusing themself, they picked up the chair as they left, catching the door before it shut, thus the bell failing to ring again. When they got outside they were greeted with Hinata leaning against a light post while pouting. Normally Y/N would have simply talked to Hinata about her terrible behavior but they had never seen her hair such a stark white before. Sure they'd seen her hair a light brown or even a natural looking blonde but never white, immediately getting concerned and scared, Y/N walked around to the diner's alleyway where they could still see Hinata while not allowing her to see them. Y/N commed Ino on their Holo-Com to make sure she was available for an emergency visit.
Hinata was even more miserable now, she was alone in the middle of the day and she had nothing to do. Now she couldn't even send dirty looks to that Neji guy who kept flirting with her Butterfly. The street was mostly silent save for the passing of vehicles along the road, which was a blessing. At least she had the quiet rhythm of the late afternoon traffic to help calm her down. Brushing her now blue bangs out of her eyes, she started to count the cars passing her on the street. At least that would give her something to think about other than Y/N and that stupid human man flirting with each other.
Behind her the door to the diner opened up, the bell above the door rang and soon the sound of footsteps followed. Whoever it was moved towards where Hinata was standing, watching the movement along the busy street. The footsteps stopped behind her and immediately Hinata knew who was standing there.
“Hey Himiko right? After you left Y/N followed, have you seen them? I just want to see how-” Neji cut himself off as Hinata slowly turned around, something wasn't right with her eyes. They were soulless, empty, and not at all human. Neji staggered back as Hinata began to smile, a smile that didn't reach past her lips.
Hinata walked towards Neji, enjoying how he was trying to pretend he wasn't scared of her. In a split second of panic Neji wound up and punched Hinata in the throat only to be met with something rock hard that hurt him more than it hurt Hinata. But that was all Hinata needed. In the blink of an eye Neji was on the ground, his nose broken and bloody.
Y/N was watching this from around the corner in shock. Hinata with her snow white hair had just sent a man crashing to the ground with blood pouring from his face. She stood over the now unconscious Neji, blood dripping from her knuckles. Y/N was shaking in fear when Ino picked up the com they had sent.
“Come here now,” Ino said before hanging up.
Y/N nodded and walked toward where Hinata was. They stood beside her and offered their shaking hand. “Hinata how about we go for a walk together okay? To clear our heads, maybe we'll go see our friend Ino.” Y/N said tensely. At this point Sakura had seen Neji and was rushing out to go help him thus Y/N felt comfortable leaving him.
Hinata on the other hand was excited, she hadn't seen Ino in a while and her Butterfly wanted to spend time with her again. Clasping their hand in hers, they began to walk toward Baseline Robotics™. Y/N wanted to vomit due to the sticky feeling of Neji's blood on their hand.

“So you're concerned because her hair turned white after you spent over an hour using her as a translator so that a guy could successfully flirt with you? And then she punched the same guy who was flirting with you after already being incredibly annoyed by him. Y/N you realize how ridiculous that is right? Hinata did that because she was jealous and didn’t know better than to lash out physically, especially since from what you said he threw the first punch. That registered to her coding as an immediate threat, so of course she removed the threat by incapacitating him,” Ino said as she sipped her smoothie. With a chuckle she set her drink down and motioned to Hinata who was playing with one of the robotic hands on the table while listening in.
“Y/N we made Hinata specifically so that she could emulate human emotions while still being fully autonomous. You have to remember, she's comparable to a puppy, she has you and that's about it at the moment. She probably feels very protective of you since she doesn't know anyone as well as she knows you, and because of that she is very attached to you. So when you bring her places with you and then ignore her in favour of other people it irritates her. Just like how you'd feel if the person you love was ignoring you constantly. She may have copper wires instead of iron in veins but she is essentially human so treat her that way. Then everything will be fine and you won't face that problem again. Okay?”
Y/N nodded relieved and mildly embarrassed, walking over to Hinata who was listening intently to the conversation. “I-... I think that I owe you an apology Hinata. How I treated you today was unfair, and I swear I won’t allow it to happen again. Come on sweetheart let's go home, we can watch your favourite movie and cuddle, just… let me make it up to you?” Y/N said as Ino's words replayed over and over in their head.
Hinata grinned widely, her hair slowly darkening at the roots, turning her whole head black once more, the bangs however still remained tinted blue, but in the dimmed light of the lab it was near impossible to notice. She dropped the disembodied arm and grabbed for Y/N’s hands and as the pair made their way home one thing in particular about what Ino said stuck out to Y/N. Did Hinata really do that to Neji because she was in with love Y/N? Y/N didn't really believe it, after all why would she, they were friends.

Another lunch over and Hinata was excited to go home so she and Y/N could hopefully watch a movie together. Over the course of the week Hinata had been formulating a plan, a plan that she carefully acted on all throughout that day’s lunch meet up. She was just waiting for Y/N to come out of the washroom so they could leave when Sai and Sakura came over to say goodbye after lunch.
“Hey Hinata before we go, we wanted to remind you to tell Y/N that next week we’re going to eat lunch at the cafe closer to campus. Oh and one more thing... thank you for giving us our Y/N back.” Sai said with an uncharacteristically soft voice before Sakura managed to drag him over to her bike.
Hinata's hair lightened in the blink of an eye at the comment Sai made, she was on the verge of starting to scream at the pair when the familiar voice of Y/N interrupted her, “What did they say about me? I heard my name but couldn’t quite catch anything else” they asked sweetly.
She plastered on a fake smile and shook her head, “You don’t want to know.” She laughed awkwardly and held out a hand for Y/N to take. Y/N frowned and took hold of her hand as they walked back home.
“What. did. they. say. Hinata.”
“They told me that I was ‘too good to be stuck hanging around’ you,” Hinata sighed deeply, really uncomfortable with saying it.
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘∙•⋅⋅⋅•⋅⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
Y/N had been getting more and more suspicious of Hinata with every weekly lunch meetup. It seemed as though every time that Y/N didn’t understand a remark made about them during those times Hinata would frown and look away as if she was in pain. If they pressed her to say what she'd heard she would confess that the people they were with were insulting them. At first they didn't believe it but now they were starting to believe her, since they stopped getting invited group activities with their so called friends.
Y/N was actually getting lonely from the lack of contact they were getting in the brief amount of time they were actually invited to go and meet with friends. But the greatest sting was when not even a week after their exams finished, the people that Y/N thought were friends had ditched them. And the one person they thought they could rely on was being distant.
It was getting harder to fall asleep every night as the hole in their chest just kept eating away at Y/N, telling them that all their worst fears were true. They had cried themself to sleep as many as six times in the past two weeks. The worst part however was just how exhausting the isolation had become.
The clock read 3:45AM and Y/N was just starting to fall asleep when a loud crash was heard from out in the living room. Thinking it was an intruder, Y/N immediately thought of Hinata and how valuable she would be if some devious rival to Baseline Robotics™ had found out about her existence. Leaping out of bed in a panic to protect her, Y/N grabbed a heavy book and slowly crept their way into the kitchen. The noise continued while Y/N made their way to where the sounds were originating from. Once in the kitchen they continued to creep forward into the living room where they flicked the lights on ready to attack the intruder; only to see Hinata now standing over a now completely decimated roomba.
“Hinata? What the hell are you doing to our roomba!” Y/N whisper yelled, Hinata only pouted in response and raised her leg presumably to stomp on it again. With a sigh Y/N put the book down and looked at Hinata in the eyes, they were fed up with life, exhausted, angry and very willing to take it out on her, “I'm going to ask you this one more time. What the fuck. Do. You. Think. You're. Doing?”
Hearing the anger in Y/N's voice Hinata lowered her leg and the colour blue creeped into her hair, “I missed you and I wanted to see you again without having to be around those... humans,” she said softly.
“But what does that have to do with the roomba, which, need I remind you, is nothing but a vacuum?” Y/N whisper-yelled, they were so very confused.
“Because you love it more than you love me,” Hinata screamed. She paused and ran a hand through her deep blue hair in an effort to calm down before she spoke again “Ever since you got it months ago you've been ignoring me, you said when we first met that you wanted to be friends. Now you ignore me unless you want to go see those humans you call friends when all they do is insult you to your face when they know you can't understand them. I hate the fact that despite being used as nothing more than a translator by you, I still can't find it in me to stop loving you… You're my whole world but I know I'm not yours and that scares me. I'm scared that you will leave me all alone…” Hinata hung her head, if she could cry, she would have. She walked off into her sparsely decorated room and shut the door with a heavy sigh.
Y/N was left alone once more and as they stood in the oppressive silence of the living room, they realized just how much they messed things up. Their priorities clearly hadn't been straight in a very long time and instead of being the person Hinata needed, they were selfish and used her. “But even though all that, she still cares for me…” Y/N said in muted shock, a hand rushing to cover their mouth, it was sickening to realize, and Y/N’s stomach lurched at the thought. They attempted to look at the floor but everything blurred as their eyes filled with tears. All those feelings of abandonment, of isolation, of loss and desperation; like a butterfly desperately searching, flying high and low to find a particular flower to feed off of, these past few weeks could have been avoided if they had simply looked to their side where Hinata was waiting for them. Hinata, the shy violet that was consistently rooted in Y/N’s life even when they willingly became blind to her.
Y/N didn't see it before but they truly did love her more than anyone else. And all that it took to come to this realization was facing the potential loss of the only person to still love Y/N even after countless weeks of neglecting both Hinata’s emotional needs, and their own.
With a newfound determination they looked towards where Hinata's room was. The hallway leading to the bedrooms was still dark but despite this Y/N traversed it with the familiarity of their many months with each other, they needed to make right what they nearly completely messed up.
Knocking on Hinata's door Y/N called out to her, “Hinata, sweetheart, I'm sorry. I want to apologize to you, I haven't been treating you very well recently and I'm so sorry for that. I got so excited by the idea that I would end up with more friendships than before and I ended up using you. I realize now that I made a huge mistake. The people who I wanted to impress the most turned their backs on me and instead of spending time with you I became a recluse. Everything I thought I knew about the people I cared about was a lie. And I've been so damn blind to all the signs around me that even though I knew that you loved me, I never even realized that this whole time, I loved you back. Avoiding you even though you were the only person who was ever truly my friend was the biggest mistake I could have ever made. And I did it… I don't expect you to forgive me… I just- ... I just really want you to know that I am so sorry for how I've treated you, I never deserved to have someone as kind as you in my life.”
Y/N's face was hot with shame as tears rolled down their cheeks. Their strength was suddenly missing from their legs and they slid down the wall next to her bedroom door that they had been using as a crutch.
When the door opened Y/N heard soft whimpers that weren't their own, in the doorway stood Hinata looking like she was on the verge of tears. Everything was silent for a moment as the pair just stared at each other. Y/N knew that in that moment if Hinata could cry, she would have been.
“I-I forgive you Y/N. But y-you have to promise me th-that you won't do that to me ever again. I would never leave you all alone, so if you're feeling upset you could always talk to me. Just don't shut me out again okay?” Hinata hiccupped. She knelt down and put her head on Y/N's shoulder and an arm around their side as tears continued to make their way down Y/N's cheeks. “One more thing… I want you to say that I'm yours. Like they do in all the dramas.” she said gently, she wanted to improve the mood somehow and at the moment that seemed to be the best way to do it.
“I will, but only if you're going to do the same,” Y/N murmured as they clung onto Hinata's pyjamas.
Hinata's arms reached around and pulled them into a warm and tender embrace, allowing Y/N to take comfort in finally seeing that they were not alone at all. The duo stayed just like that until Y/N became tired enough that they fell asleep, their hand still bunched up with a fistfull of Hinata’s nightgown.
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘∙•⋅⋅⋅•⋅⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
When the beginnings of the golden light of the sunrise entered their apartment Hinata couldn't help but look down at her sleeping lover. They looked so peaceful, so sweet, so pretty, so delicate, just like a little butterfly; lying there with their head on her lap as they clutched onto the hem of her nightshirt in their sleep. Hinata wanted to live in that moment forever. The warmth of the sun hitting her face made her feel energized and the soft fluttering feeling was back, much stronger now, like the beating of one thousand pairs of wings. This time it filled her up so completely she imagined that she had lots of little birds flying through her chest. As silly as it sounds, to Hinata anything and everything felt possible in that moment.
It was wonderful, although a small dark flicker passed through her mind. She didn't let it affect her pleasant mood though, after all she did spend so much time carefully weaving her little web. It had taken months for her to carefully weed out the people who were taking her Butterfly from her. Hours upon hours of listening to meaningless conversations, waiting for a phrase that could be twisted around to become insulting or demeaning and then relaying that information back to Y/N in her native tongue. And all of it so that they would realize that she was the only person for them. They didn't need anyone else if she was by their side.
It was so adorable that they maintained their naïvety throughout their life, but it was also just as dangerous. If she was able to manipulate Y/N so easily then who else would see that and try and take them away from her. Especially because they fell for every word she told them hook line and sinker without suspecting anything at all.
“Yes it is far safer for them to have only me,” she thought as she stroked Y/N's cheek with her thumb. And yet it still weighed heavily on her mind, afterall she was taught that lying to the people she cared for was very, very bad. She didn't like that she was forced to do such a thing to the person she loved more than anything else, but plenty of relationships where one person lies to the other work in movies. After all love is stronger than everyone and everything that would attempt to get in the way of it. Hinata knew that they would be an example of this now that she finally had Y/N all to herself.
Hinata hummed a soft tune as she picked up Y/N to put them in their bed. They were soon gently slipped under the covers with it, tucked snugly around their body.
Sitting next to them for a moment Hinata lingered a while, they looked positively delectable afterall. Irresistible in fact. So gathering what courage she had and mixing it with that light floaty sense of contentment she felt, Hinata leaned down and with a soft smile kissed Y/N's forehead as they slept. Torn between wanting to surprise them when they woke up and staying to watch them as they slept; eventually after much deliberation the android stood up to go make them breakfast.
Savouring the moment for a little longer she pet Y/N's cheek fondly, as she thought aloud, “Ino was right, we aren't so different at all. In fact we are perfect together. Copper and iron.”

My partner was drawing fanart for a show they like. I overanalyzed it. They wanted me to share. This post is very long.
The show is called Bolts and Blip. It was made in 2010, and ran just one season into 2011. The initial premise I was told was that robots competed in sports on the moon to solve disputes that happened on earth.
Initially I thought this was an odd way for democracy to operate, but hey, I don’t make decisions for the government, so moon robot sports is how things were.
This intrigued me for a few reasons, such as
It takes place in a post-war era of “world peace”, in approximately 2080. Judging how things are going now, I find the concept of 2080 being after a world war very believable.
There was seemingly one democracy on earth now, and that democracy decided unanimously to settle all further disputes via moon robot sports, as stated.
Humanity was technologically advanced enough at this point to not only create robots that could play sports, but they played these sports in a large city on the moon!
My initial question was this: Do we know who built the robots?
Yes of course, its common knowledge on the moon. Just two scientists are responsible for all the robotic life on the moon, creating a number of robots in the ballpark in the thousands. This is a lot of moon robots.
There is a need for so much raw material to create even a thousand robots, enough for a civilization, NOT TO MENTION the massive city they all inhabit. Where they probably don’t get new shipments of materials on the reg, this would mean the scientists could continue making more until they ran out of resources.
However, besides these main robots, one of the scientists also created a race of at least 100 robot leprechauns living under the ground. Or, at least... One of the leprechauns.
Then, allegedly, this one robot created more than a hundred more. I do not know when the first robot leprechaun was created, but I fear for the safety of the human race if there was any interplanetoid travel between the earth and the moon while they existed.
The resources sent to the moon for the purposes of making robots would be very finite. Thus, if these scientists created the robot leprechauns before they had used the resources up, the leprechauns could apparently self replicate using the materials on the moon. This is how there became more than a hundred of them.
This may not be the case, but if a single one of the sublunarean self replicating leprechaun robots happened to board a spaceship that was heading for Earth... With a near infinite supply of resources, enough to spare on moon robot sports, the number of leprechaun robots would quickly grow. The earths infrastructure could be at risk. I’m talking sinkholes that are miles wide. Why?
Because the leprechauns were programmed and built for the moons gravity. The leprechauns create more of themselves on earth, as many as they are able to, but are still programmed for the moons gravitational density. The Earth is much heavier, and when the build their subterranean halls, they would not know that our planets density is more prone to collapse. Catastrophe.
But even that is purely conjecture, because Earth is never once seen in the show. Let me get back to what we know.
The leprechaun robots, as well as the main race of robots were all created by one man. Dr. Tommy, colloquially known as the ‘good’ scientist. The ‘bad’ scientist is called Dr. Blood, which is a kickass name 7 days a week. I will explain why there are ONLY two humans on the moon shortly.
The primary species of robots that Dr. Tommy makes participate in team based sports, interpersonal relationships, jokes, goofs, and gambits. The concept of Artificial Intelligence making jokes, playing sports, and creating bonds is not unheard of, or at least, it might not be in 2080. However, my next questions make me think these robots were not AI. My questions were:
Do the robots have the concept of death?
Do the robots ever say the word ‘heck’?
To both of these, the answer was a horrifying yes.
Yes, it is confirmed, that robots on the moon say heck. The implications of this are astronomical. I will spell it out thoroughly because lockdown has given me endless time with which I can do as I please.
Heck is, of course, derived from the word hell. Hell is the counterpart to heaven, both terms used to signify the existence of an afterlife. Where there is the word heck, there are beings that believe in the afterlife.
These robots have souls.
The circumstances in which these robots die, which they are entirely able to do because of their soul, is such: The Reformatter. To simplify, the Reformatter grinds the entirety of the robots body to scrap, which it then melts together to make household appliances. This is what happens to robots who are not ‘good enough’ in society.
What the nightmarish fuck.
Not only do the souls of the robots face heaven and hell, they also face being reformatted to become the brave little toaster if they do not serve their society.
Their society which is made by one human
Let me emphasize this; they treat him like he is unto a god. How can they not? He created them, their world. He is their father, their everything. They even built a statue of him, holding an enormous double sided wrench which is clearly symbolic to remind them.
Dr. Tommy gives life, and it can be taken away.
The method of which he gives life is a puzzlement to me. I am told that our dear Dr. Tommy refers to a robots as having a ‘Heart’. This Heart is described to me as a magical piece of leprechaun gold, so the robots are able to feel.
The robot Heart is likely a simplification. The show is advertised as a Family show, and must cater to the understanding of all ages, including small children. Breaching the topic of souls, mortality, and the afterlife likely wasn’t something the writers or creator were able to do. My theory is, the Heart is a future technology that can instill a soul into a robotic body,
Which, wow. Big, if true. At first I was boggling at the concept of manufactured souls being a technology that humanity could see in my lifetime, but then I remembered one of the three key pieces of knowledge I was initially given.
“It takes place in a post-war era of “world peace”"
....Throughout human history, one social class is legally subjected to inhumane treatment; Prisoners. Once you are in jail, internment camps, concentration camps, those that are keeping you there believe you have less rights as a person. Medical experimentation, slavery, abuse, forced sterilization, nothing is illegal.
And after a war like the doozy Earth must’ve recently went through, there must be a lot of war criminals. Those that were so engulfed in carnage and bloodshed, there was no way for them to reenter society. The newly forming singular government, if they had access to the necessary technology, may have used it on these criminals.
Think about it. The dust settles from an all out world war. There cannot be peace without someone to shoulder the blame of the atrocities. There must be an evil, if there is to be peace. So, the individuals who excelled in war and killing became the reason there was war and killing. These people are now less than human for what they’ve done. They can be treated as such.
I think this is when their souls were taken. As each warrior passed, their spirit was caught and kept. And then, in a classic move from 1788-1868, they transported all the criminals to somewhere they would never harm humanity again. Somewhere out of the way, remote, and it was the moon. You knew where this was going, they sent all the souls to the moon.
Along with a large amount of other people! The two scientists certainly did not build an entire moon colony on their own, and at this point, the robots were not even in production yet. The moon colony was made, and then the scientists began their work.
Starting with the leprechauns, who I believe were not made from the souls of war criminals. The first one may have been another scientist, the one responsible for creating the ‘Hearts’ in the first place. This is why that one knows how to create more of itself.
Then, the robots were made. There would have been a prototype, but let me focus on what the show covers for a bit.
The sports that these robots engage in is between two existing teams, complete with names, colors, and esprit d’corps. These games vary from episode to episode, some involving hang gliders, some with miniature fighter jets, some involve a battle with guns... that squirt water. The logic there is that if they are hit with the water, they rust and die. Which, okay. Right.
But a lot of the games and sports they play seem to be quite combat based. Furthermore, the robots seem to take to them naturally.
Not to mention, there are bomb mice and big laser guns as well. These robots are armed. Why the hell are these robots armed? Who thought it was a good idea? After all, these robots are clearly capable of malice still. Why wouldn’t they simply turn violent against the humans?
I think they did. Here’s my theory of how it went down.
Dr. Tommy begins using the souls of war criminals in a prototype of robot
The robots can recall their life on earth as humans, but are now trapped in metal vessels because their bodies have been destroyed
The robots begin reacting to the existential nightmare of being soul trapped
Some despair and destroy themselves
Some are enraged and destroy humans
Most of them, actually
Most of them turn their wrath against humans
The people who inhabited the moon, who created the cities, were suddenly under attack by the most skilled killers around.
This is when Dr. Tommy hits the kill switch for these robots. They are recycled, and maybe he even collected the souls again but maybe Dr. Blood took those ones.
These happenings left only two humans left on the moon. Dr. Tommy began making a new version of robots, who’s souls could not remember their time on Earth. Perhaps, in taking away everything about their humanity, he gave them the most innocence of anyone.
These robots now know that
Dr. Tommy is good, for he created them
They must contribute to the society Dr. Tommy has made for them
If they fail to do so, they will not only die, but go to hell
Dr. Tommy is the good scientist. He doesn’t want the robots to be used for evil, he doesn’t want them to hate each other. Not like that Dr. Blood, who encourages these robots who have no memory of who they were before and might be able to unlock those memories to become more warlike.
However, look at what Dr. Tommy makes them do. The robots are still using their combat knowledge, independently of their memories of war on Earth. Their knowledge is being honed and enhanced, while the repercussions of their actions are not something they are privvy to. But, Dr. Tommy is the good scientist. The robots know this, because he said so.
Or because they will be obliterated and condemned if they go against his word.
It is also worth noting that the good doctor also usually lives remote from his creations, in a little space shuttle.
In conclusion. I believe Dr. Tommy is knowingly creating an army of supercombatant robots, imbued with the souls of the most bloodthirsty war criminals, that will do his every will. He intentionally killed every human on the moon colony that he could. I fear what this will mean for the future Earth of this show.
Final notes:
These robots, once their souls memory was wiped clean, would have no gender. Gender is a construct originally created to indicate what a persons sex characteristics were. Not only is that a spectrum on humans, but robots would not be given any such characteristics, nor would the concept of gender transfer over. All the characters seem to perscribe gender to themselves though, which was not something they were given at their ‘birth’. This makes none of them are cisgender, so every robot in the show is transgender.
Further cementing my belief that Dr. Tommy made these robots for combat is that at LEAST the main characters have “super” modes, where they become even more powerful and capable of succeeding in combat. What’s the hyper-killing mode for, Dr. Tommy? What’s it for?
The humans that were killed on the moon are still somewhere, probably frozen? One joke alluded to the characters being able to purchase human body parts (a stomach) in the run of their average day. Its very possible that the human anatomy is being extensively studied by the robots. Whether this is for medical purposes, or to more accurately kill humans, or to satisfy their innate bloodlust, I do not know.
I am also told that at the end of the only season, a space ship that is also a school bus arrives on the moon! It is full of children. Which. Oh god oh no.
I understand this turned into a grimdark internet theory of a cartoon. I also believe that, without the ability to think critically, we will never be able to come to rue understanding of our own nature. It is still a cartoon. My thoughts and words should be taken with a singular grain of salt, because I am a human who is often wrong. That being said, Andrew Knight, if you ever read this, let me know what you think.

Knight Rider 2000
WARNING
This post contains spoilers for Knight Rider 2000, the 1991 film which attempts to expand on the canonical universe of Knight Rider (1982-1986). Key word, attempts. I know that this film came out almost 30 years ago at this point, but I also know that this fandom grows a little bit every day, and there will ALWAYS be people who haven’t seen every episode (myself included), let alone every movie! I happened to catch it on Charge! for Hoff's birthday (yes I'm hella late posting this LOL) with my good friend @trust-doesnt-oxidize, and boy let me tell you, it was… Something.
From here on out, I’m not holding back from sharing my impression of the film based on specific details from it, so if you want a spoiler-free viewing, go watch it and come back!! Or… don’t, it’s kind of awful. I can only think of one thing in canon that it may spoil, and even that appears in early Season 2 and is fairly minor, so if you are curious about it, I HIGHLY recommend watching it BEFORE reading this. The scenes with the most impact are touching because they come as a surprise, so even if you know the general plot of the film, I would recommend watching it first.
Also this is really rambley because I have a lot of emotions about this series and, by extension, this movie. I really don’t blame you if you click away here, but if you DO read it all the way through, I would love to hear anything you would like to add, agree or disagree!
OKAY! Knight Rider 2000 is a movie that exists! And I hate it!
The film sets up an interesting argument between two groups of people whose names I don’t remember because they were boring (except for Devon, I know his name at this point). In this interpretation of the “future,” gun control has been implemented to,,, some extent, I can’t entirely tell if there have been some policies implemented across the country or if it is all localized in this one city that even the Wikipedia page for this movie doesn’t bother to mention. And no, this city is NOT in California for once! Usually I would be happy to see a change of setting, but considering that everything in this film felt so foreign to the Knight Rider that we know, it would have been nice to at least have a familiar setting. Anyway, gun control stuff. The debate between whether these gun control policies are ethical or not is very interesting. Innocent people are dying because the wrong people have guns and the police are rendered useless when they themselves don’t have access to weapons. This argument happens to support my perspective on the issue, so I appreciated how it took a look at that side WITHOUT it sounding like we are crazy murderer people, but I digress. It makes sense that the ban happened in the first place, because much like how the main conflict in Pixar’s latest film Incredibles 2 revolves around society’s over-reliance on superheroes, I could see Knight Rider’s society becoming dependent on technology to save them. It can be easy to seem like the most advanced tech in that society is present only in KITT and KIFT, and to SOME extent that is true. However, Shawn does say that it is relatively common in this society for people to have memory chips in their brain. That counts for something. And the police DO have a defense mechanism according to the Wikipedia page for this movie, it’s just nonlethal.
So as you can see, I am very interested in the conflict this world sets up. I sure hope they expand on these conflicting ideologies throughout the film, giving us a clearer idea of why the bans were set in place AND giving us insight into what exactly has caused some revolt against it. That subject is seemingly timeless, and with how decently the introduction tackled it, I have some confidence that this film could pull it off in a tasteful way. Wouldn’t that be amazing? It’s some of the most serious subject matter Knight Rider has ever tackled. It’s so interesting!
Yeah they pretty much abandon that plot in place of a very, very bad copy of the original show’s “Hearts of Stone” (season 1, episode 14). Illegal guns exist and are bad, but we don’t really know why. I may know a little better if I had been listening closer, but I was trying to not get so bored that I missed Kitt’s parts!
At some point during this sequence, we are introduced to Shawn, a happy police officer who is happy to have a family on a happy birthday. And then she gets shot! Due to head force trauma rendering her unconscious, she’s sent to the hospital. She goes in for a risky operation that miraculously saves her life against all odds.
Then, Michael wakes up with Garthe Knight’s face and hears a great story about how one man CAN make a difference!… I mean what?
Jokes aside, it’s kind of amazing how much this very Michael-esque sequence comes across very differently. It’s almost the perfect example of why I don’t like this movie. The surgery is weirdly realistic for a Knight Rider entity. There’s blood and screens and surgeons and a sterile white room for operations. Michael woke up in a Medieval castle with one doctor and two random people he’d never met at his side. Shawn’s situation clearly makes more sense, but is it half as fun and whimsical? No, no it’s not. This whole film comes across as depressing to me, and it’s only worsened by what’s to come. Apparently, she had KITT’s CPU/Microprocessor/something sciencey implanted into her brain. That’s especially strange since all that I saw was a yellow liquid being injected directly into her skull! That’s a lovely image, and definitely gave me the idea that there was a full computer chip going in there??? (It may have actually been explained more clearly, and I just looked away because eek weirdly bloody operation scene) This caused her personality to do a full 180. So, Shawn is going to be fun, snarky, and full of personality like KITT is because they share memories now! Right? Right???
I think they tried to do that, but it came across flat. So flat. She speaks in a purposefully monotone, robotic voice and delivers downright mean comments that leave Michael and KITT scratching their heads. She seems to lack basic empathy until her own memories start flooding back, and at that point, the emotions she show seem so foreign to the character we see that it’s not remotely believable. You want me to believe that this robotic woman with -10 personality points started nearly crying after one string of memories, albeit a very traumatic one, entered her mind? This would have been believable if she was entirely changed afterwards, coming across as far more human, but that was only the case sometimes. It also would have been believable if the film had the same energy that the original Knight Rider show does, where suspending one’s disbelief is necessary to make it past the opening credits. However, this movie tries to be so grounded that the kind of dramatic beats that would work in the original seem forced here.
Shawn is not the only character who I take issue with, though. Let’s start with the most potentially problematic change from the usual canon in the entire film: KITT’s personality. I have very mixed feelings on how he is portrayed. If you’ve seen as much as a spattering of quotes from this movie, you probably could sense that KITT was… off. When KITT first comes on screen, he slams Michael with a wave of insults, and none of them come off as their normal joking around. However, I don’t necessarily have a problem with that because he has the proper motivation to be very, very upset. He is sitting on a desk as a heap of loosely connected parts that have just enough power to make the signature red scanner whir and make an oddly terrifying red light eyeball thing (Hal???) move. The first thing he hears is Devon nonchalantly saying something along the lines of, “I’m afraid he was recycled” to explain why KITT has been deactivated for OVER A DECADE and is not currently in anything that moves (my Charge! stream thing lagged at this point but @trust-doesnt-oxidize has since told me that Devon DID appear upset about KITT's being sold, but KITT likely wouldn't have heard that and what Devon said seemed to be moreso directed at HOW the chip was sold and not the fact that it was sold in the first place). KITT is justifiably mad, and if they had kept KITT’s actions in character while his emotions said otherwise, I would have no problem with it at all.
However, once KITT’s CPU is somehow implanted into Michael’s Chevrolet, KITT does not act in character. Shawn drives, not Michael, so it stands to reason that he would not necessarily listen to her. She stole his CPU, his life for over a decade. KITT does tend to listen to human companions, regardless of whether he is programmed to or not, but I can see where this would be an exception. However, Michael soon intercedes and essentially tells him to cut it out. Based on everything that the original Knight Rider told us, KITT no longer has a choice of whether to listen or not. Michael is ultimately the one who calls the shots because of KITT’s very programming. And yet, in this scene, KITT doesn’t listen to Michael and apparently gets so angry that he downright stops functioning. Because that happens all the time in the original series!
And if you’re wondering where I got the conclusion that KITT frustrated his circuits to the point where they could no longer work, he said that. KITT. Admitted to having feelings. In fact, he did not just admit to being angry in the moment. He told Michael that, while it may seem like he is an emotionless robot, he does have a “feelings chip.” A FEELINGS CHIP-
I am for recognizing KITT’s obvious emotions as much as the next guy. I think they are often overlooked when discussing his character. While I don’t think that real artificial intelligence will ever reach the level of human consciousness, the entire energy of Knight Rider comes from playing with this concept by portraying an AI character who clearly emotes interacting with a human who doesn’t seem to know that. But the thing that makes this show feel so sincere is that neither character plays too heavily into that trope. While not always knowing how much KITT feels and by extension hurting those feelings alarmingly often, Michael recognizes it enough to work in concert with KITT, apologize for his more major flubs, and consider KITT a friend. And KITT subverts the trope by never recognizing that he has feelings to begin with. He will say that he cannot feel sadness but, in the next breath, say that something upset him. He will say he cannot hold a grudge only to immediately rattle off a string of insults directed at the person he clearly has a grudge on. The show is magic in how these two characters display a subtle chemistry that always has room to grow because both characters are slowly coming to see each other for who they truly are and supporting one another along the way. From what I can tell, the original show never fully concludes that arc, and it may even start regressing after Season 1. However, we can feasibly see how Michael could slowly come to understand that KITT really does feel things just as much as he does. And we can imagine the relief KITT would feel knowing that Michael was never bothered by that possibility.
So, you can see where I have a big problem with KITT spelling it out so plainly. The audience gets full confirmation about what has been displayed to us through nuanced hints throughout the series, which sounds a lot more satisfying than it really ends up being in this film. But worse than an underwhelming conclusion to a thrilling story, Michael knows it plain as day. There is very little buildup to KITT admitting this. He barely even sounds moved. Instead, in this movie, the “feelings chip” is a fact of life that does not need to be covered up in the slightest. Michael himself doesn’t really… react. He just kind of nods along, as if he’s saying, “Huh, makes sense, alright.” After everything these two have been through, if there really was such a simple explanation for why KITT is the way he is… why arguments went south, why the mere mention of a Chevrolet was enough to get a seemingly jealous response, why inconsequential things like music taste and gambling were subjects of debate, why KITT had always acted so exaggeratedly dismissive when topics of emotional significance struck a chord, why every little sarcastic banter had a hint of happiness until it didn’t… don’t you think Michael would do something? Whether that something would be a gentle, “I always knew that, pal”; a shocked, “Why didn’tchya tell me sooner?!”; or even a sarcastic, disbelieving, “Yeah, right” is up to interpretation. But there would be something.
And yet, even that concept is flawed. We learn a lot from KARR’s inclusion in the original series, and what I take away from it boils down to a simple sentiment. FLAG never meant for their AIs to be human. I do realize that directly contradicts what Devon says within this film, but I see that as another way for the film to steer the plot in this direction, not as a tie in to the original. When Wilton says that one man CAN make a difference, he means that. He isn’t considering that KITT is just as much a person as Michael. He’s not seeing that, at the end of the day, teamwork is what makes the show work, even if Michael is the glue that holds it together. So, I think that to say that there is a “feelings chip” is to disregard the entire point of the original, that in this world life finds a way of inserting itself and that KITT’s (and KARR’s for that matter) humanity is an anomaly, not the rule. At the end of the day, KITT’s humanity can’t be explained away with science. And really, I don’t think it should be explained away at all. The show has had an amazing trend of showing us how KITT feels, in all its unorthodox glory, alongside private moments that had me sobbing like a baby. The movie should just be like a longer, more complex episode of Knight Rider… Although I cannot pinpoint exactly how it should be done in the context of this film, I know there are ways that Michael could have been shown that KITT feels rather than being told.
One last complaint, albeit a more minor one, is the idea that he has to listen to what Shawn says over Michael's authority. I have spent a decent amount of time thinking about this one point, which has caused a lot of the delay in posting this. There's multiple reasons why this flies right in the face of what is canon in the original series. Perhaps the most obvious of these problems is the fact that, in the original pilot episode, it's made very clear that KITT can't assume control of the Knight 2000 without Michael's express permission unless Michael is unconcious. Devon makes it quite clear in this episode that KITT is programmed specifically to listen to Michael, not just anyone who happens to be piloting the vehicle at the time. In case there was any doubt about this, KITT ejects two people who are attempting to steal him later in the episode (well, ok, later in the two-parter, I don't know if it was the same episode or not). The show isn't SUPER strict about this in future episodes, but it does at least acknowledge Michael's authority in a few pivotal moments throughout Season 1 (I can't comment on episodes that I haven't seen yet, but I suspect that this pattern continues). Of all the rules set up throughout the series, it actually seems to be the most loyal to this one. One moment that stands out to me is in Trust Doesn't Rust when KITT attempts to stop Michael from causing a head-on collision with KARR, but Michael then overrides him and the climax unfolds. If one of the most iconic moments in the series is caused by this one bit of programming, to throw it out in the film is to disrespect the basis of the original series.
Speaking of KARR, he provides yet another reason niglecting this detail is such a big problem. From what we can tell, KARR isn't programmed to one specific driver (at least, not anymore[?]), and so he can override anyone in the pilot's seat. This is something they seem to highlight in TDR as well, although not so plainly as the previous point. KARR ends up ditching Tony to gain speed and get an upper hand in the chase with Michael and KITT (although a scene they deleted would have made this a mUCH MORE SENSIBLE ACTION THAT R E A L L Y ISN'T A BETRAYAL but y'know what this post isn't about that) whereas KITT has to listen to Michael even to his own detriment. If this one feature is indeed one of the major things that separates KITT from KARR, the idea that Shawn can override all of that cheapens the original conflict between KITT and KARR.
...Well okay, let's be real, KARR was never that compelling as an antagonist to begin with because he's a LOYAL SWEETIEPIE-- I'll stop.
And finally, we have the biggest, most bizarre reason that this is a problem:
If Shawn can override Michael's authority, that means KITT can override Michael's authority.
Why? This would be the first time (outside of episodes where some sort of reprogramming or mind control was involved) in the series that KITT had not only listened to another human instead of Michael, but also listened to that person OVER Michael. The only difference I can see between Shawn and quite literally anyone else in the show's history is that Shawn has KITT's chip implant thing. If that's the reason her opinion has more credence than Michael's, then wouldn't that mean KITT's own opinion has that authority? If that is the case, literally every example I've gone through in the last couple of paragraphs is not just challenged but rather negated entirely.
The most frustrating thing about this scene is that it simply didn't have to happen. Michael could have gone along with KITT's plan, showing him (and us) that he does trust his former partner even after all these years. Shawn could have convinced Michael to go along with it using her... feelings chip. Blegh. Or we could have had a stubborn Michael force this scene to be delayed, likely improving the pacing overall. Maybe we could have even seen a frustrated and emotionally exhausted Shawn wait until Michael is not in the car and then plead KITT to give her the truth, no matter what Michael says. We have seen KITT control his actions without Michael's input plenty of times, and we could have seen some more of his humanity show through if he could relate to Shawn's struggles... after all, he too has missing memories because she has his chip. They're both going through a bit of an identity crisis. I'm sure that he could find some workaround in his programming to help her if Michael wasn't there insisting that he does not take this course of action.
But even after all of that fussing over what has been done wrong with KITT, I can’t deny that he is the heart and soul of this film. There was only one scene in this film that brought me near tears. I got more of an emotional impact from this one clip than I have from a lot of movies that are undeniably much better. Michael’s old-fashioned Chevrolet does not hold up in the year 2000, and it is clear that the usual car chase sequence won’t work as police vehicles quickly creep up on them. I was personally very curious what they would do here. I figured that KITT would find some way to outsmart the drivers of the police cars, maybe by ending up on an elevated mountain road that trips up the other drivers and causes them to waste time turning around and hopping on that same path. Or, maybe, KITT would access a road that’s too narrow for the relatively bulky police cars. However, it quickly becomes clear that this city is made up of wide roads on the ground. As KITT veers off the road and tells Michael to trust him, the I found myself having to trust him. This isn’t the way Knight Rider chases usually go, and with all these odds stacked against him, the only thing we can do is hold our breath. The way this scene is staged to send us into this just as blind as Michael is, frankly, genius. Water slowly creeps into the frame as a feeling of dread builds at the thought of what KITT might do.
Surely, we are led to think, he will knock into some boxes and turn right back around. Right? We’re reminded of the fact that this is not the Knight 2000, that there is no chance of this car floating. That if KITT does what he really seems to be doing, there’s no chance… but he wouldn’t, would he? This is the only action sequence in the film that had me at the edge of my seat, staring wide eyed at the screen. And then, the turn that you want so badly to come doesn’t, and you have to wonder what’s about to happen. What was KITT thinking? Won’t Michael and Shawn drown? And, most prominently in my mind, won’t KITT drown?
For a moment, this scene plays us into believing that, because magic FLAG science that is pretty par for the course, everything is fine. KITT explains that they have an airtight cab and over 20 minutes of oxygen. Everyone lets out a collective breath of relief. We see it in Michael and Shawn, and I know I felt myself relax.
And then there’s a flicker in the screen, and that pit in the bottom of my stomach came right back. Michael is confused, and KITT explains what we should have realized was inevitable. This is KITT sacrificing himself. He even goes as far as to let Shawn know that she can use any of his computer chips that she may need. This comes off as strange at first, but it goes to show that KITT is, at his core, the same kind soul we always knew. He acts angry because he feels betrayed, but given the choice, he will chose another person’s life over his own, always. Even the microprocessor that he is most frustrated over, the thing that seems to drive a wedge between him and Shawn, is just how he is expressing his hurt. Now, thinking it is the end, he offers it up freely, and Shawn doesn’t seem to know how to respond. KITT is calm as he says his final goodbyes. And this is the first place in the film that we get to hear the amazingly nuanced voice acting that William Daniels is so great at. KITT sounds collected and at peace with what is to come, but there are also subtle hints that he is at least a bit nervous, a bit sad. “I know. I guess this is goodbye.” He doesn’t want to leave his friends, but he knows that he has to for them to be safe. Even if the pacing of the film seems to actively try to undermine this moment, it stands out to me as an amazing scene, even if the reaction from Michael is underwhelming at best and the reaction from Shawn is… as much as can be expected from Shawn, but that’s not saying much. As far as KITT knows in that moment, these are his last words: “Michael, take care of yourself.” Down to the last moment, Michael is everything to him.
IjustwannamakeitclearquicklythatIthinktheirrelationshipisentirelyplatonicokthankyou
And I felt sad, big time sad. The movie up until that point was unbelievably boring to me, and this wasn’t a turning point where the movie suddenly became great. It was a moment so darn good that I almost don’t think the movie deserved for it to have as big of an impact as it did. But that shows just how powerful this universe is, how wonderfully honest these characters are. Even after being butchered practically beyond recognition, one scene in-character can still bring you to tears because you have connected with them so deeply throughout the TV series.
AND THEN DEVON DIED IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS :D
I don’t like Devon.
Devon was actually more tolerable in this movie than normal, and I can see where people who don’t hate him could be sad that he died I just,,, he has hurt or talked down to KITT and KARR so many times that I actually could not sympathize. What’s even more frustrating about that is that Devon’s death is the one that Michael got all sad over when KITT sacrificed his life for him and Devon got kidnapped randomly but okay go off movie you can’t ruin that scene for me. I knew going in that Devon died, but I was expecting them to spend a lot more time setting it up and making it as dramatic as possible. Nope, he just got a shot to the old air tanks I guess? My view of it is nothing more than that it’s a thing that happened.
OH AND DEVON DID PULL ONE HEINOUS ACT. He said that KIFT was better than KITT in every way other than that KITT has humanity. SINCE WHEN HAS DEVON GIVEN ONE SINGULAR HOOT ABOUT THE AI’S BEING ALIVE??? TELL KARR THAT??? HECK, TELL DEACTIVATED KITT THAT YOU WERE JUST FINE SELLING OFF AT AUCTION THAT?!?! Also also, KIFT DOES NOT C O M P A R E TO KITT. We are coming back to KIFT in a moment, don’t you worry. For now, I just. Low blow, Devon, low blow.
Michael was fine too, he played a weirdly small part and that felt off but everything he said seemed pretty in character. The most out of character parts were when he said nothing at all. OH AND WHERE HE WAS REPLACING BONNIE but that’s besides the point, no Bonnie OR April… no Bonnie OR April… I’m fine…
…
It feels like this movie wants you to forget that Michael exists because Shawn is here she’s more interesting, right? Right???
She’s really not.
So back to KIFT. My favorite part of KIFT is that pronouncing KIFT in your head sounds funny. It’s like “gift” but if the gift were actually an underwhelming villain of sorts that is overtaken in a garage, parked, by Michael either removing his microprocessor entirely or moving it to a Chevrolet.
I was surprised how not bad KIFT looked. I had seen stills from the movie that looked really uninteresting compared to the regular designs, and while I still agree to some extent, it was a lot more epic than I would have thought. Something about how the paint shines on it is captivating. I was genuinely happy when KITT was moved to the snazzy red vehicle, although a big part of that could have been how disgusting mint green looks with red. Seriously, including the red scanner on that bizarre seafoamy-bluey car (and yes, I do think it is a very pretty car by itself) was like when people say movies were “inspired” but in the opposite direction. And the scanner looked weirdly small? Was it just me?
Am I the only one who feels w e i r d just looking at this??
I think this is the most normal thing to be categorized as being in uncanny valley but there we go, I did it. It’s not right.
Anyway, as neat as KIFT looks, it is no comparison to the classic Knight 2000 or even Season 3 KARR. Red can be striking, but not when the classic scanner is also red. No contrast!
KIFT is absurdly easy to forget, and I don’t think that the car’s design has anything to do with it. KITT spends most of the movie piloting that car, and while it is not what we are used to, it doesn’t come across as super lame to me, either…or at least, not because of the design. The biggest problem with KIFT is, I think, simply his voice. His voice feels so out of place in the movie, and it’s so strange to me considering that Daniels’ voice is integrated just fine. The recording sounds too crisp, too clean. KITT’s voice always has a great deal of character, a very Earthy-sounding voice for an AI character. I actually think that this incongruity is purposeful, and it’s a very clever concept. We are supposed to recognize that KIFT isn’t human like KITT is. KIFT sounds out of place in the real world among real people; he’s too neat around the edges. It’s especially obvious when KITT and KIFT talk to each other. This is also mirrored by how KITT occupies a well-loved Chevrolet that has little imperfections that make it feel real whereas KIFT is in this red… whatever it is that feels like it comes out of a sci-fi film. This effect would have really worked if we had enough time with KIFT to understand his personality–or, more aptly, his lack of personality. What makes this not work is the fact that we spend practically no time with KIFT. We don’t get to hear what he feels he is programmed to do, we don’t get to hear him deliver the sort of lifeless lines that Shawn did that made her so unlikable, and we don’t even get to hear his voice more than 4-5 times. Every time comes as a shock, taking us out of the moment of the film. We could have gotten used to his crisp sound if he had spoken more, and we may have seen the actual plot significance of it. Instead, it pulls you right out of the movie.
Oh yeah, and the only line(s?) that KIFT delivers to KITT are full-on taunting… that’s not very lifeless of you KIFT.
Alright, just one last thing to really hammer home a point from earlier and conclude this whole thing. You know what I was saying about this movie lacking the whimsical nature of the TV show? Well, the final chase puts the icing on this oddly sullen crab cake.
Yes, crab cake.
Because the pinchy crab that is Shawn makes it quite painful to get this particular cake and icing doesn’t even belong on it anyway.
KITT is racing down the street in this bright red car that I just explained is thematically wrong for him to be driving tbh but whatever, he’s racing in it and comes up to a barricade of randomly stacked up cars.
Oh Yeah, we all know what is coming.
The music swells. Michael looks at the upcoming barricade with furrowed eyebrows and quietly asks KITT what the heck they’re going to do now.
OH YEAH, we definitely know what is coming.
And at last, for the first time in the film…
KITT veers off to the right and they drive on water. “It’s really sink or swim with you, isn’t it?” Michael asks, pretending that’s funny as if I am not still emotionally raw from that scene that happened an hour ago.
Apparently, KIFT had that one obscure feature from “Return to Cadiz,” the Season 2 episode where April forces KITT to follow KARR into the ocean on the hopes that waterproof wheels might work maybe, directly ignoring his many attempts to get out of it. Yay. I love references to That Episode. That Episode which baited me with an opening that looked like KARR could have been discovered underwater only to show me that not only was there no KARR, but KITT was going to be bullied into repeating what his brother did when he died. Wholesome. Lovely. Fantastic. And how did KITT know for sure that would work? KITT clearly still has some technical hiccups in his own CPU from Michael tampering with it, that was an awful lot of confidence to place in a maybe.
AND MORE IMPORTANTLY…
THIS MOVIE DID NOT HAVE A TURBO BOOST
A TURBO BOOST
I cannot believe that a movie based around Knight Rider did not have a turbo boost (or for that matter, the THEMESONG???). Like I am honestly still surprised by it. Almost every episode of the original show had at least one turbo boost, and there is a reason. The idea of a talking car jumping in midair, sometimes with Michael “WOO!”-ing like a girl, is so fantastically fun that nobody even tries to question how impossible it is. I think we all know how impossible it is, and that doesn’t matter, it is yet another thing that embodies the heart of this show.
And… not even one.
…
So yeah, that just happened. I think this is technically a small novel. Wow.
I know that I'm still missing a lot... I have a lot of thoughts about this movie, and if you for some reason want more please ask! I would also love to hear your thoughts on this! Do you agree with my analysis? Do you disagree entirely? Did you notice something that I failed to mention entirely? Pleasepleaseplease send ideas, I would love to hear them! Also know that, no matter how much I was disappointed by the movie itself, I am fully open to hearing your ideas about how to improve or expand upon it. I truly believe that this film introduced some great concepts, and I would absolutely adore seeing them reworked in a way that's more true to the original. Thank you for reading! :D

Lego Liveblogs ST: TOS, part 9 (of who-the-hell-knows-how-many?)
What Are Little Girls Made Of? Let’s just hope it’s more moral stuff than the last boy the Enterprise took onboard...
* I see we’re wasting no time getting the nurse to take over Yeoman Rand’s eyecandy duties. Shame that Barrett’s Number One characterization is a no-go now. * Huh, plot’s shaping up to be a redux on The Man Trap. Not a high bar to clear. * “Beam down alone, just yourself.” Yeah, that’s your cue to pack an extra-sized Phaser, Kirk. * Nice try, girls, but Spock still ain’t turning his head for either of you. * “Whoopsy daisies, almost forgot our sacrificial meat!” ** Wow, even I wasn’t expecting the sacrifice that quick! * That is one Scooby Doo-ass lookin’ villain ** Who’s on a whole shelf away from this assistant guy, which obviously means he’s totally fine and trustworthy! * Aaaaand you two goldbricks are officially on your own. * Does... it really make sense for a species to go underground when their sun’s too cold? I guess they’re supposed to be warmed by the geothermal stuff down there? * Alright, Gene I’m impressed. How’d you get an outfit like this past 1960s censors?! * Well, that escalated quickly. ** I’d wisecrack about Kirk’s choice of “tactic”, but I think I’m more disturbed by the fact he dialed his Phaser straight to “melt stomach” intensity before he knew he was shooting a robot. What happened to Stun Mode? * He breaks necks and does voices! Wotta guy. * Kirk, you gotta start thinking like a sci-fi protag. Who says that’s the real professor? ** Oh, okay, I guess he is the real professor, he’s just completely lost his marbles. * Hum - this seems to be sowing the seeds for Nurse Christine to save the day, and if any actress has that level of pull it’s Barrett, but once can never underestimate the sexism of ‘60s TV... ** Case in point: Andrea, who proves this isn’t just The Man Trap. It’s The Man Trap with Mudd’s Women thrown in for good measure. * Make up your mind, Prof, are you trying to keep this a secret or not? * Don’t be racist, Nurse. * Nah, Prof, if she were logical you would’ve been choking on your own spinal cord ages ago. * Funniest. Cliffhanger. Ever. ** Seriously, Kirk asks one stupid question and smash-cut to him in a Batman ‘66 deathtrap. ** Wait, is that the Piltdown Man? * “Choose, Christine. Which is your captain?” “Do I get a Phaser?” * Oh jeez, I’d heard there was an episode where the crew snagged a fake Kirk because he was being racist toward Spock, but I didn’t know it was because the real Kirk fed that racism into the fake one. * “What he's done may seem wrong...” Nurse, he killed two guys without blinking. It’s a good thing you’re feeding all this to robo-Kirk, because I’m not sure the real one would forgive you. * Okay, even money says robo-Kirk dies by getting force-fed something that makes him short-circuit. Irony at its most delicious. ** Alternatively: why not just ask it to calculate pi? ** And they say Starfleet siblings always come outta nowhere! * Okay, I’ve kicked this episode pretty hard so far, but the central point here is pretty solid sci-fi: can a machine ever be a proper receptacle for a human consciousness, however advanced its programming? On the other hand, should we get so high-and-mighty just because the electric impulses driving us come from meat instead of silicon? ** I also like how the professor isn’t a full-on “ALL emotion is Bad!” type. He’s not even opposed to sentimentality, necessarily - he just thinks you can program away all the negative bits. * Ooh, Godwin’s Royal Flush! That’s pretty rare. * Whoof. Okay, I know people usually like to paint Kirk and Bond as opposites, but this is a move worthy of any 00-agent. Doesn’t just give you a momentary hostage, but makes sure he’s in no position to give complicated orders even after you’ve tossed him. * Give the big guy some credit too - he knows he’s programmatically bound to obey Nurse Christine, so his solution to that is just running the fuck outta earshot. * Ah, the legendary Dong Rock. 50% more dong-y in context! * Heavens to Betsy! How will Kirk save himsel... ** By not saving himself, apparently. Seems the big guy heard Christine after all. * Love Spock’s “Has the Transporter been spewing evil clones again?” face. * So Kirk... logics(?) both the big bruiser and the sultry henchgirl into defying their master. Adherents of the Three Laws are no doubt crying, but personally I think it’s more hit than miss; no matter how airtight the programming, once an AI reaches a certain level of complexity it has to develop some kind of survival instinct. * Holy last-act plot twist! * Prof, maybe you shouldn’t have programmed her with Yandere chips. Just a thought. * But back to the he-was-a-robot-all-along! bit... it’s got a strong base, but I feel it refuses to quit while it’s ahead. The longer Kirk talks, the more his argument starts sounding like “If you’re really human then why don’t we like you? :|” * Aww, a murder-suicide to cap things off. Isn’t it romantic? * “Think up a better excuse than that, Captain, or my next message will be to Starfleet HR.” * Written by... the Psycho guy? That explains a lot.
I’m probably not even the hundredth guy to note this, but this is easily the pulpiest Trek script to come down the pike - the square-jawed hero who ain’t scared to get his hands dirty but really survives by his wits, the swooning damsel who gets to be useful exactly once, the mad doctor wielding Scary Foreign Knowledge that not only perverts every law of God and man but threatens to infiltrate our fair society, his Big Scary Humorless Thug and sultry (but dangerously jealous) henchgirl...
There are parts where the sci-fi port improves things and even broaches legitimately interesting topics, and it’s a damn sight better than either The Man Trap or Mudd’s Women, but on the whole I don’t think I’ll be in a rush to rewatch this one. Without too many standout “What the fuck is this?!” moments, there’s nevertheless a kind of sleaziness to the whole thing...
(Those were some neat overalls, though.)

On Today’s Unus Annus Video!
So today Unus Annus tackled the idea of artificial intelligence, and I got really excited and wrote a text wall comment that’s undoubtably going to get buried there, so I thought I’d post it here for anyone who’s interested! Posting it under a cut because HOOO BOY it’s a long one.
tl;dr AI is super cool and scary and much closer to being a thing than we think it is. Signed, a nerd who did way too much research for her scifi book.
Hi! I actually did a TON of research into the mechanics and ethics of AI when I was writing my first novel in 2018. Be prepped for a text wall dump of cool AI info!
So you're actually hitting on one of the biggest conundrums of artificial intelligence technology, which is, to quote the wiki, "If an AI system replicates all key aspects of human intelligence, will that system be sentient"? At that point, there is significant debate over who would own the rights to the system, or whether there would be a way to determine that at all. This point in history, where it becomes impossible to distinguish between an AI and a human being (AKA, the first machine to pass the Turing test) and in fact, the AI surpasses human intelligence, is referred to as the singularity (Originally coined by Scifi writer Vernor Vinge). The majority of the debate comes from what to do in the event of the singularity, which is taken by many to be a when not an if. Do we trust that the machines we make will trust us? Or do we stop them before they get that far because they might consider us a threat to their existence and wipe us out instead?
Lots of Scifi writers have tackled this idea in their works (including me!), but one of the most famous solutions is the one proposed by Isaac Asimov in his short story "Runaround", which was published in 1942 (this story later became part of I, Robot, which is where you've probably heard the rules before). Asimov instituted in his fictional robot-filled society three basic rules:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
Asimov's laws have been a huge part of the discussion around real scientific research into the capabilities of programming and machine learning because people see them as a way to safeguard advances that we make. But they also present the problem of not seeing robots as equal to humans, which could cause serious stress in sentient robots.
An interesting dive into this is Sophia, the world's "first robot citizen" from Hanson Robotics. Sophia isn't truly sentient, but she's the closest thing we have right now, being able to learn and react on her own without constant input from her research and development team. She can even make facial expressions that mimic real emotional responses! The trick with Sophia is that she recognizes that she isn't a human, and is, in fact, an experiment. She is designed to be okay with this and has even expressed excitement about it (which, like, amazing, a robot that can express excitement?!). If she were to ever say that she does not wish to do an interview that her team wants to do though, would she have the right to say no? What if she asked for her image to be taken down from a certain site? If she, herself, decided she no longer wanted to make public appearances? Would she have the right to do that, and would it be morally problematic to reprogram her to consent? Where does she cross the line from simulated sentience into real, self-contained sentience?
It's the same problem you talked about with owning your own image. If we as people don't know where we stand on that, what can we say about the machines we create and their ownership of themselves? No one has steady answers. It's all very interesting, and legitimately concerning, but also fascinating. I'm excited to see what happens next...if also a little worried.

Their Hero Academia – Chapter 74: 10 Short Films about 1-A
Presenting the next installment of my on-going, nextgen, MHA fic! Earlier chapters can be found here
“What’re you watching, dork?”
Toshi looked up from his desk to see his sister, Hana, standing in the doorway. “Oh, just a video Shota sent over. He wanted to know what I thought. It’s Sequoia Rose and Kestrel fighting some of the Sons of Stain… Looks like they were planning some kind of raid on the local Agencies before they routed them out.”
It was a pretty impressive fight. But the Sons of Stain were no joke; they were followers of the late Hero Killer, who still believed Hero Society was corrupt and worked to bring it down. There was something very satisfying about seeing them get beaten.
Hana rolled her eyes. “I don’t know how you can just watch all that stuff in your free time. Dad’s a Hero. Mom’s a Hero. More than half the adults we know are Heroes. You’re studying to be a Hero and so are all your friends! Don’t you get tired of it?”
“No?” he tried. “It’s just all… so cool! Besides, Rose and Kestrel are still pretty young! There’s a good chance I might get to work with them someday, so it helps to know about…” She rolled her eyes again and Toshi trailed off.
“Do you even hear yourself?”
“You know,” he said, “just because you pretend you’re too cool for this kind of stuff doesn’t make you cool. We used to watch videos together with Dad! You used to run around in a Froppy onesie!”
Hana looked him dead in the eyes. “Meh.” He actually felt a chill go down his spine, but pressed on.
“Oh, come on! You wanted to be a Hero when you were little! What changed, Hanners? Your Quirk’s way stronger than Grandma’s! It’d be perfect for Hero work!”
“Maybe I don’t want to spend my life beating people up, dork! You ever think of that?” Hana looked annoyed. He’d known for a while now her interest in Heroes or in being one had been waning, but her disinterest seemed to have picked up speed since she became a teenager. She did want to be a doctor, which was still helping people, but…
“But you could be a Rescue Hero, like Mom! Or a Medical Hero, like Aunt Eri! Your Quirk would be great for that! You could move rubble or people, maybe even help with injuries....”
Hana pointed at him and he felt a slight shove in his chest, nearly knocking him out of his chair. “Tosh,” she said. “Let it go. Not everybody wants that life.”
“Even with a punch like that…” Toshi began, but the fire in her eyes silenced him. “Okay, okay. I’ll let it go.” He smiled. “You know we’ll all be proud of you, no matter what you do, right?”
There was another eyeroll. “Could you be any sappier? I’m surprised you aren’t crying.”
“I don’t cry that much!”
“Suuuure….”
“But you know, though,” he said, “Aunt Eri and Katsuma got through med school way faster with way less debt…”
***
“You’re what?” Katsumi growled, staring at Dad.
Dad looked up from where he was packing his suitcase. “Going to the Training Camp,” he said. “The other teachers think it’ll be a good idea if I go and get an idea of what you kids can do.”
She threw up her hands in irritation. “And you were planning on telling me this when?”
He shrugged. “Didn’t find out until a couple days ago.” He’d been commuting back and forth to U.A. a lot lately, getting things set up so he could start teaching the next term. She still wasn’t sure how she felt about that or how she felt about having him around and in her space that often. “And I’m telling you now, aren’t I?”
Scratch that. She was relieved to still have him around after his injuries. But she still wasn’t sure how she felt about him being their teacher. Aunt Itsuka was a homeroom teacher, not a subject teacher, so it probably wasn’t as bad for Kana as this would be, but maybe she’d talk to her and see how she dealt with it.
She crossed her arms. “So you’re leaving Tai alone with Papa to eat take out the whole time we’re gone?”
He gave her a look. “I’m not that dumb. Tsukushi’s given them a standing invitation to dinner while we’re gone. She’ll make sure they’re fed.”
Leaving Papa and her little brother to the Monomas? Dad was desperate. Well, Papa and Tsukushi got along. And Tai loved Takeru. It was really only Dad and the elder Monoma who fought, usually over stupid stuff like hedges and an ever escalating “niceness” war that probably wouldn’t end even when they moved.
“Don’t worry,” Dad said. “I’ll give you your space. I’m not going to be looking over your shoulder the whole time or anything.”
She held his gaze, then shrugged. It wasn’t like she had anything to hide anyway. It was just the principle of the thing. “Yeah, all right.”
He grinned after that. “Don’t think I’m going to go easy on any of you, though.”
“Wasn’t asking you to.”
“Not even Izumi.”
The words caught in her throat. She could handle All Might pushing them. His jocular demeanor meant that even when he was driving them the hardest, it was hard to get mad at him. Even Aizawa’s pushing was a serious, focused thing.
Dad would push as hard of any of them, probably harder. It was, she admitted, what they all needed, how nuts things were right now. He’d force them to go beyond their limits, because he knew no other way.
Could she handle seeing her best friend pushed like that? She’d been trying hard to let Izzy face her own challenges and not step in immediately to protect her. Even since the Sports Festival, she’d been more acutely aware of how Izzy could take care of herself. Dad knew that about her.
“She’ll appreciate that.” She’d have to try and do the same.
***
KA-BOOM!
The device exploded, leaving a large scorch mark on the opposite wall of the testing range. Automated systems activated, with arms extending from the wall and spaying fire-suppressant foam over the flames. Later, a cleaning robot would emerge and take care of the mess.
Flipping up her protective mask, Mother let out a laugh. “Aw, I thought for sure that baby was going to work! But didja see the size of that explosion! Wowee!”
Sora joined her in the laugh. “Most spectacular!” she agreed. “Perhaps we should adjust the fuel to power ratio by twenty-percent for the next version?”
Her brother shook his head. “If we are intended to make a rocket-propelled gauntlet for our costumes, then we will require sufficient force to do any damage. Better to reinforce the material to survive the forces involved.”
He was incorrect about that. “Material strength will only go so far,” she told him. “And reinforcing the material will add additional weight, which will diminish speed.”
The incorrectness persisted. “Incorrect,” he said. “The advancements being made with lightweight alloys should prove sufficient to…”
Both of them frowned, then turned to face Mother. At the same time, they began, “Mother tell him/her that I am correct!”
Mother let out another laugh. “Babies, babies, babies,” she said. “I think it’s adorable when you have a science fight. And as much I’d love to weigh in on this one…” The clock on her design desk chirped with an alarm. It was loud, shrill, and impossible to ignore. Father had insisted on her having one like that. It would even trigger back-up alarms if not silenced with the correct passcode. It was ultimately necessary to allow Mother proper time-keeping.
She silenced the alarm. “I promised your father I would have you both in one place so he could talk to you.”
At that, the door to the lab snapped open and Father walked in. He had his projector laptop under one arm. Sora looked at Tensei nervously. It was rarely a good sign when he brought that out. It would mean he had a topic for discussion that he considered important enough to require slides.
Father regarded them seriously and set his laptop up. He pushed his glasses up his nose. “As you know, you will be leaving on Monday for the two week Training Camp. While I trust Aizawa and your other chaperones to maintain order, I also still remember the third year camp my own class undertook. Denki and Kyoka were somehow able to sneak away to go skinny-dipping. The resultant pregnancy scare that resulted a few weeks later is not something I wish to see repeated with either of you or your class.”
Tensei brought a hand up. “Father, seeing as how Takuma and I are both male, that would be a highly unlikely outcome, should we choose to engage in such behavior.” He went a bit red. “Even though we will not. May I be excused from this discussion? It seems as though it would be better focused on Sora.”
The traitor! She made a mental note to hide his soldering kit later.
Mother, however, just shook her head. “Let him have this. He spent all of his last day off making these slides. I tried to distract him, but he resisted my feminine wiles.”
“Mei!” Father erupted. “That is not an appropriate thing to say!”
“I thought it tied right in, Tenny.”
Father went a bit red, as he often did when Mother teased him. “Regardless,” he said, “as you are both now in relationships, I feel this next stage of talks to be highly necessary.”
The presentation projected from the laptop’s holograph lens began with Relationships: How to Make Smart Decisions That Will Ensure a Successful Future for You and Your Partner. Looking carefully, she could see the slide was numbered as one of one hundred fifty.
It was going to be one of those presentations then. Father certainly did love to lecture. Takuma, she understood, but how could he not trust Toshi?
“Perhaps we should be taking notes?” Sora ventured. “But I believe I left pen and paper in my room. I should go and get them!”
“As should I!” Tensei agreed quickly.
Father seemed to be searching their faces for signs of deception, but nodded. “Very well,” he said. “Ten minutes, then we will begin!”
More than enough time. She ran out of the lab as fast as her legs would carry her, Tensei hot on her heels.
***
Carefully, Kimiko closed her suitcase. She had enough clothes to get her through the Training Camp and a few of the medical textbooks Doctor Izumi had provided her with. According to Doctor Izumi, since she was progressing well with her studies, she’d be able to receive additional medical training at the camp. The studying was often long and arduous and cut into her gossip-wrangling time, but she’d be lying if she said it wasn’t also rewarding. It was an application of her Quirk that didn’t involve sneaking around, didn’t make being invisible the be-all and end all of what she was.
There was a knock on her door. “Come in, Daddy,” she said.
Her door slid open as Daddy padded inside. He smiled. “How’d you know it was me, ‘miko?” As always, he was able to look her right in the eyes, something almost no one else could. Even Kenta had trouble with it sometimes.
“Pretty distinctive knock,” she told him.
Daddy smiled again. “You’re getting good at observing,” he said. He nodded towards the shelf where some of her medical books still were. “You’re getting good at lots of things.”
“Oh, Daddy,” she said. “You’re going to make me blush!”
He chuckled at that. “You’ve got everything you need? Sunscreen? Extra changes of clothes? Reflectors?”
“Yes, yes, yes, …wait, no!” Kimiko ran to her dresser and pulled out her reflective headband, armbands, and gloves. They were useful when she was going places in the dark, otherwise it was very hard to see just her clothing. They stood out when she couldn’t.
She stashed them in her suitcase. “Whew! You’re a lifesaver, Daddy!” She threw her arms around him in a hug.
“Offf!” Daddy grunted, returning the hug. “I still need to breathe, ‘miko!”
She let go, but gave him an affectionate punch on the arm. “Oh, Daddy!”
“Smart, pretty as your mother, and a heck of a right hook,” Daddy said, beaming. “No wonder you’re going to make a great Hero.”
“Daaaaaddy!” she wailed, arms flailing. “You’re too much!”
“I’m just telling the truth.”
He always did believe in her. When she’d told her parents she wanted to be a Medical Hero, get her paramedic’s license, they’d both been supportive, but Mom had been more cautious, telling her about all the hard work that would be involved. But Daddy, Daddy had immediately thrown his full support behind her.
She gave him another hug. “Thank you.”
After the hug, he crossed his arms. “Now, you’re going to behave yourself on this trip?”
“Of course, Daddy!”
“You’re going to pay attention to Aizawa and the other teachers?”
“Of course, Daddy!”
“Not going to hit your friends too much?”
“…I’ll try, Daddy!”
“Not going to spend the whole time shipping your classmates and friends? Or trying to arrange a ‘summer romance?’”
“…I’m only human, Daddy.”
“’miko…” he began, a chastising tone in his voice.
“Fine,” she said, stomping her foot. “I’ll try and keep it to a minimum.”
“That’s all I ask.”

Shopping in the upscale boutique, Takiyo reached for the designer shirt. Another hand did so at the same time. Wrapping his glowing fingers around one side of the hanger, he tried to take it. But the other hand, ending in sharp looking claws, wrapped around the other side and tugged too.
He looked to his right and shot them a glare, finding a boy his age, with a mane of purple hair and a feline-ish cast to his face. He was very pretty, with a style that suggested the kind of trying too hard to look like he wasn’t trying hard to look that good. “Pardon,” Takiyo said, “I had it first.”
“Oh, please,” the boy said. “I saw it first. It’ll look better on me anyway.”
Takiyo wondered if he could distract the boy by using his Quirk like a laser-pointer, but he doubted he was cat-like enough for that. “There must be something wrong with your eyes if you think that’s true.”
“Mmm-hmm,” he said, his yellow, vertically-pupiled eyes moving quickly. He tapped a finger against his chin. “U.A. student, right? First year? I do remember seeing a glowing boy during the Sports Festival.”
Takiyo’s thoughts darkened at that. He hadn’t stood out nearly as much as he would have liked and he was certain he’d only ended up on an Internship with Cellophane because the class’s parents had arranged for no one to be left out. Still, if he had made enough of an impression for someone else to remember, even someone infuriating…
He put his free hand on his hip. “If you remember me, then you should remember how stunning I am.” He almost regretted his words. He had told Koda he was trying to be nicer to people. She would be disappointed in him and he hated to think of that. He could already see her disappointed face in his mind…
The boy shook his head, sending his mane waving in what had to be a practiced motion. “You keep telling yourself that.” He snapped his fingers, then licked his lips. “Now the boy who took first… that’s a different story. Though my friend was rather partial to the girl who took second. But nobody was talking about you, honey.”
Neither of them had let go of the shirt in the meantime. It was the last one left in that color and style and he was not backing down. “Regardless,” Takiyo said, “none of it changes the fact that I had my hand on this first. It’s mine.”
The cat-boy laughed, but did release his grip on the shirt. “I suppose it’s the duty of the pretty to do everything they can to help the less fortunate. And you, my friend, need a lot of help.”
Takiyo gritted his teeth, feeling his glow intensify for a moment. “Must you be so infuriating?” he demanded.
The boy laughed as he walked away. “Oh, you’ll see just how infuriating I can be, honey.”
What did that mean?
***
“Up! Up!”
Takuma looked down to see his little sister, Moji, tugging at his pant leg. She looked a lot like a miniature version of Mom, with pinkish skin and horns, topped by dark, fluffy hair. At only two, she didn’t have a Quirk yet, but he was sure it would be trouble, whatever it was.
With a grunt, he bent down and picked her up. She wrapped her arms around him and he planted a kiss on top of her head, causing her to giggle. “Did you come to see your favorite big brother? Or did you just want a snack?”
She gave this serious consideration. “Snack!”
Takuma laughed and shifted her so he was only holding her with one arm. “Okay, hang on, I think we’ve got goldfish crackers around here somewhere… Assuming Mom hasn’t eaten them all.” At four months pregnant with twins (Or as Dad like to refer to them, “Players to be named later.”), Mom had developed a lot of cravings.
“Snack?” Moji repeated, more insistently. She had a bit of a one track mind sometimes.
“I’m getting it,” Takuma told her, finding the small serving pouches. He set her down, ripped the top off, and handed it to her.
“Snack!” Moji said again. “Thank you!” Her cravings satisfied, she walked off, leaving him alone in the kitchen. She dodged around Mom as they passed each other in the doorway.
“Hard to believe you used to try and sell your brothers,” she said.
“In my defense, Kenta really wanted a brother. He would have liked Yamato.”
“You’re not going to try and sell the twins, are you?”
He shook his head. “Nah. I’ll be out of the house by the time they’re old enough to be trouble.”
“You will, won’t you?” Mom asked. “Hard to believe you’re almost sixteen. I must have done something right. Tsu and Momo were so worried when I had you! They were afraid I’d leave you at the park or something! As if! That only happened two times.”
“Three,” he corrected. “It was raining.”
“Meh, who’s counting.” She crossed the room and pulled a container of ice cream from the freezer. Mom grabbed a spoon and proceeded to eat directly from it. She gestured with her spoon. “So how’s things going with you and Tensei? Good? Tell me it’s good. In-Laws with the Iidas? Mama’s gonna have a nice retirement! You know, Training Camps are great for cementing relationships…”
Takuma felt himself flushing a deep purple. “Nope, nope, nope, not having this conversation!”
Mom cackled at his discomfort. “Oh, come on. You can’t possibly be traumatized by this. Your dad and I have always been very frank about sex.”
Too frank, really. And with four siblings and two on the way, too often too. “Nope, nope, can’t talk, gotta go upload my last video!”
Not entirely a lie; he wouldn’t be able to upload anything while at the camp. Two weeks without external validation from strangers? He was gonna die!
***
The Anivoice Agency was not a large organization, but the building was significant. This was because the ground floor contained an animal rehabilitation center. Most of the animals had been seized from trafficking operations. Father was frequently called upon to rehabilitate the animals before they were returned to the wild.
While there were employees charged with caring for the animals, Father also liked to spend time with them. Akaya had many memories of helping and was accompanying him today.
They paused before a large enclosure holding a gigantic beast, combining the features of many animals. “How are you, Manny?” Father asked. “Feel like talking? No? Okay, let me know if you do…”
Manticore made a soft rumble. He had been in Father’s care for ten years and was barely closer to regaining his humanity than he’d been the day he arrived. Yet Father tried.
Father turned to her. “Looking forward to the Camp?” With other people, Father often had trouble finding his words, but never with her or her mother and brother.
What could she tell him? That the words that had shattered her during her Internship still haunted her? That her classmates were all finding themselves in relationships, while no one had expressed any interest in her? That she was certain that no one would look upon her with romantic eyes?
“I am,” she said. Not entirely a lie. She could throw herself into being a Hero. And there would be plenty of time to spend with her friends. It did not do to devote oneself entirely to romantic pursuits. Father and Mother had not even begun dating until they had graduated.
She had time. She could tell herself that.
“I’m glad.” Father was also not one to push, preferring instead to simply listen.
Her faith taught her honesty…
“I’m not,” she said. “I haven’t felt truly glad for a long time.”
“I know,” he said. “We were worried you would never tell us.”
“You knew?” she asked.
“You’re like me, easy to read,” he said. “Please, tell me what’s wrong.”
“It began during my Internship.” She told him all that had happened.
“I’m sorry you went through that,” he said. She could tell he was pushing down anger on her behalf. “The world’s filled with too many people filled with hate. But love wins.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“It did for me. For Grandma. For her father. Our skin is stone, but our heart still feels. We’ve all felt it. You’ve already braver than I was at your age. Stronger too. I know someone will see you for the amazing person you are.”
“Would that I could be so certain.”
“It will get easier. Someone will see you and just go ‘wow.’”
“Do you truly think so?”
“I know it.”
She wished she could believe it so easily. Something about the way Father said it made it sound possible. “Okay.”
For a moment, the world was all right. Manticore cooed encouragingly. “Thank you, Manny,” she said.
***
“It’ll be fine, Mom,” Daisuke said, sitting at the kitchen table, sipping tea. Mom sat across from him, likewise drinking tea, a nervous look upon her face. Dad was at work.
Mom was a tiny woman, dark-haired and serious. She had an arm-stretching Quirk and had been a graduate of U.A.’s General Education program. She worked in finance, well away from the world of Heroes. And she was worried. It didn’t show on her face, but he could tell by the subtle way her teacup shook in her hands, the way her arms kept ever so slightly lengthening and then retracting to their normal length, the way she was blinking too much, her breaths quick and shallow.
“The first time your dad went away to a training camp,” Mom said, setting her cup down, he lost a hand, most of his classmates were injured, Bakugo was kidnapped, and Fumikage almost was too.”
“The hand…”
“And don’t say the hand grew back!”
“…Yes, Mom.”
Mom frowned. “I’m sorry. I’m just… I’m not like Tsu or all the other spouses. I’m not a Hero. I worry enough about your dad when he’s out there. Haru gets it, Mei a little, but… I remember how worried I was when the news broke about what happened at the Training Camp… I don’t think I slept a wink until he called.”
“It’s not going to be like that,” he told her. “One, there’s no Villains after us. Two, even if there were, Tokoyami’s Quirk isn’t like her dad’s and wouldn’t go berserk no matter what else happened. And three, anyone who kidnapped Kirishima-Bakugo would return her within the hour.” No offense meant to his explosive classmate, but she would be far more trouble to kidnap than anyone would want to deal with.
Mom frowned at that. “I know. Just promise me you’ll be careful, all right? Even with your teachers watching out for you, you’re going to be out in the middle of nowhere. If somebody gets hurt…”
Mom worried a lot. It was easy to forget sometimes, how many people didn’t have powerful Quirks, how many people weren’t Heroes. At U.A., it was a bit of an insular bubble for his class, the children of so many Heroes who’d not only grown up as friends, but were all concentrated in one place. People like his mom had to worry more about Villain attacks, about who would help if something went wrong, about who would get hurt.
His Quirk and his strength made him a frontline fighter and a brawler. She would worry about him getting hurt no matter what. But how could he not put his skills to use? His Extendo-Arms might not have been as flashy as the majority of his classmates’ Quirks, but he had the right skills and the right Quirk to be the right person for someone who needed a Hero. He didn’t seek fame or glory. He just wanted to help. It was enough.
“I promise, Mom,” he said.
***
“Can we have Mighty Burger for dinner?” Taki asked. Asuka’s dark-haired younger brother was the only one in the family to look entirely human. Though the eleven year old’s shadow never quite seemed to match his movements.
“Yeah!” Nanami added. Her nine year old sister’s wings flapped furiously, though not quite enough to get her off the ground.
“That would be good,” Asahi said. Her frog-faced brother, all of thirteen, had not picked up the moodiness that some teens seemed to. If anything, he was too well-behaved.
With Mom at sea and Dad at work, it was left to her to manage her younger siblings. Normally, Asahi would be in charge since she’d started UA, but as long as she was there, she was drafted into the role of caretaker. Not that she minded. She had already done so before attending U.A and had been doing so for much of the Summer break. They’d spent much of the afternoon at the library, so that Nanami could check out books and so that Asahi could begin to do research for a project he would have in his next school term, and were now walking home.
“I don’t think so,” she said.
“Mighty Burger!” Taki insisted.
“Mighty Burger!” Nanami said.
“Mighty Burger!” Even Asahi was joining in now.
Asuka felt the familiar sensation of Frog-Shadow leaving her body. “Mighty Burger!” Frog-Shadow insisted, joining in the now repetitious chorus of wanting to get take out.
“We have food at home,” she said firmly, using the same tone of voice her mom used to manage them. “I’m making pasta for dinner.”
Frog-Shadow zipped and around and hovered right in front of her beak, eyes wide and pleading. “Pleeeeeease,” her familiar begged. “They’ve got Hero Babies toys in the kids’ meals! I wanna get Baby Ground Zero before they discontinue it!”
“…Why do you know any of that?” Asuka demanded.
“Because Toshi told you about it and I know everything you know.”
Asuka squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Ever since she had almost lost her, she had made a greater effort to include Frog-Shadow, allowing her to roam freely and speak to her more often. It had, by and large, been going quite well. Being included more often had tamed some of her childish impulses, though it seemed that it was still an uphill battle.
“I’m pretty sure you’re outvoted, Asuka.” Taki said. The shadows around him rippled a bit.
Asahi just laughed, a low, croaking sound that flared his throat pouch. “Hey now, Mom and Dad left her in charge. If she says we’re having pasta, then we’re having pasta.”
There were now four pairs of eyes staring at her. She should be strong. She should be tough. She was the responsible adult here. If she could wrangle her classmates as Vice-Representative, then she should certainly be able to handle her family as eldest child.
And perhaps if she flapped her arms hard enough, she could learn to fly without Frog-Shadow.
“Fine. Mighty Burger!”

“Hi! Welcome to the Nice Guy Convenience Store! Let me know if you need help with anything!” Isamu said to the customer who had just entered. Ever since he’d returned from I-Island—and he still couldn’t believe everything he’d become privy to during that time—he’d been working in his dad’s store, pitching in where he could. It was nice and normal and grounding. The woman grunted and nodded in acknowledgement.
Weird. The dark-haired woman looked familiar. Where had he seen her before? That was going to bug him until he figured it out. She headed to the back to pick up a handful of ready-made frozen meals and a six pack of energy drinks.
The woman seemed to be eyeing him as well when she returned to the front. As he was ringing her up, she asked, “U.A. kid, right? One of Eraserhead’s brats?”
“Ah, yes, ma’am,” he said. Was she a Pro-Hero? He didn’t think so, though she could have been an Underground Hero. But not that many people would know who Aizawa was, even if his own face had been on practically every television in Japan during the Sports Festival.
That, mercifully, had started dying down. The U.A. Sports Festival was a major event, but compared to daily Hero fights and premieres, it was easy to get forgotten by anyone who wasn’t a diehard fan.
Was he in danger? He let one of his hands behind the counter. Slowly, he began charging up an energy pulse, just in case he needed it. He just needed to keep his face neutral…
“Thought I recognized you,” she said. “You’re the zippy kid who tackled me at the last second.”
Isamua’s eyes went wide. Shadow-Thief? She was on parole, right? Aizawa said they earned their paroles…
“Yeah,” he said. Should he apologize?
She shrugged. “Just didn’t expect to see any Hero kids working a regular job. I thought all you Hero types had rich families.”
“Not a Hero family,” he said. “Just me.”
“They stuck you with all those Hero kids?” Shadow-Thief asked. “What the hell? That ain’t exactly fair to you, is it?”
“I’ve already learned a lot from them.” Isamu shrugged. A sudden and rare burst of confidence filled him. “And besides… I think I’m doing all right for myself.” Sports Festival winner, Intern with Deku, “Hero” of I-Island, even if he wasn’t exactly sure how he felt about that last one, especially the paycheck that had shown up from the Mighty Agency for “services while deputized” with way too many zeroes in it. At least that adventure had been kept out of the news.
Shadow-Thief laughed at that. “You, you’re all right, kid.” She took the bag with her purchases in it and headed for the door. “Stay in school kid. I wanna get to say I was your first take down someday.”
What did it say about his life that getting encouragement from a former Villain was not the strangest thing to have happened to him?

Dystopia novel?
yeah! I’m writing a book! I’ve had the idea since sixth grade (seven years now!) and I’ve written multiple different drafts of it, but the basic premise and plot has stayed the same.
However, last night (or really, this morning) at around 1 am, I decided to, yet again, change the pov. So I had to rewrite it. And then, I started renaming things. And while I was renaming things, I changed the main character’s name. My writer friend was live texted the whole time as she got to watch the cogs in my brain start turning in real-time.
Basic premise of the book: there’s a city that survived an apocalypse that decimated everything outside their walls. They are the only ones left on their continent, maybe the only in the world. And so, they built up their walls, enclosing the society in a dome with a glass top, focused on forming a self-sufficient society. The society is entirely focused on innovation and advancement, to ensure that they’re ready for whatever could happen next.
To ensure that everyone’s individual potential is maximized, the jobs are separated into divisions, named Affinities. There are seven Affinities, with a floor of the city dedicated to each. I’ll put more about each in the read more because it’s long.
Plot: Phoenix lost her parents and her memories to an accident that wouldn’t have happened if she had just listened. She didn’t have to go after them. Didn’t have to always play the hero. But she did. And now they’re gone. And she doesn’t even remember them.
As she’s trying to piece together her rapidly returning memories, her friends are trying to convince her to lead their rebellion.
I’ve made a personality quiz for the book that has extra lore with an interactive twist.
Selling point: it’s gay. it’s diverse. none of the main characters are cishet. All of them are disabled and/or neurodivergent.
The main character has my own personal experience with memory loss. (not via an accident, but I have a memory issue that causes me to have huge chunks of time completely blacked out. I just don’t have access to those memories.)
Okay so here’s where it gets a little bit like Divergent but please trust me it’s literally NOT Divergent and that book wasn’t even a thing in my school when I started writing the first draft of this book okay?
Amicable
The human-touch.
In our city of robots and enhanced technology, Amicable are our nurses, teacher’s assistants, spa technicians, and other such jobs. They have the floor below Bellance. This floor is the main hub of activity. The school is located here, as well as the hospital, daycare, spa, library, and recreation center. It is, by far, our busiest Division.
Agricola
The farmers, and the main merchants.
They sell the everyday necessities, and provide materials to the other Divisions as needed. They have the top floor, with a domed glass top to allow sun to shine onto the farm in the center. The market stands and stores surround the farm, blocking the view of the plants from those who are not in Agricola.
Bellance
The beautiful.
While everyone in our city is beautiful, Bellance makes a job out of it. They are our actors, singers, and models. They have their own stores, separate from Agricola, that sell luxury items, such as expensive clothes or furniture. However, they do not sell the necessary daily items. Those can be found in Agricola. Their floor is under Agricola, and is full of nightlife.
Kingspin
The leaders.
Our government, the leaders, lawyers, bankers, and realtors. They have the floor above Innovation. This floor holds the courtrooms, and other governmental functions. We are governed through a Legislature, where most of those tested into Kingspin work. Houses are bought through the government, which is why realtors work in Kingspin.
Innovation
The Inventive.
One of our most esteemed Divisions, Innovation holds our scientists and researchers. Our smartest citizens live and work in Innovation, ensuring that our city stays up and running, constantly evolving to maximize potential. They have the floor above Valiance. Due to it’s academic rigor, Innovation has its own college to teach and train incoming Innovators. Most of their floor is top secret, however they do occasionally hold seminars in their college that are open to the public.
Valiance
Our guards.
They are our sentries, protecting us from the inside and out. They have the bottom-most floor. Unless they are visiting family, no one outside of Valiance wants to spend a lot of time on their floor. The jails and detention facilities are down there.
(acab!!!! don’t worry a major plot point in this is them dismantling both Valiance and Kingspin. Fuck cops. Cops and government stinky corrupt.)
This isn’t like the Christian Myers-Briggs that Trisscuit had going on in D*vergent. I swear. Listen, listen. It makes sense. I promise. And also the plot and story line and society are entirely different and I’ve been working on this for a long time and it’s really diverse and it’s written by a queer, disabled, not-christian non-binary person. This isn’t your mom’s dystopian novel.
If you read this, I love you. I will share the google docs with you if you want to read what I have. I will go o f f if you want to hear about the lore I’ve written for this book. I will scream about the characters and the intricacies I’ve given them. I have so little written but so much developed. I know what I want to happen. It just hasn’t happened yet.
#Anonymous#asks!#gimme notes#the protagonist is white but that's because I'm white and I don't want to write someone else's story#but FUCK if I'm not going to include people in my story#please I will go off about this book#my own book series is my favorite series and I think that's pretty sexy of me#did NOT expect to take this long to answer this ask#i stared at it for an hour and then saved it so that I could answer it later#it's taken me an hour to write this response#it's probably riddled with spelling errors but that's because it's 1:40 am and I'm illiterate#and unfortunate trait for a writer to have#I just like the clicky clack sound my keyboard makes :)#okay posting now

17 year old finds out if LOVE really is BLIND (watching the first episode of LOVE IS BLIND)
Hey, it’s Dana!
Obviously being a teenager I don’t have the advanced knowledge about love and true love that my parents or anyone older than me has (so my opinion may not be *that* in depth or informative). However, what I do know is that I enjoy reviewing new shows and Netlfix has introduced a series called LOVE IS BLIND which is basically a social experiment trying to come to the conclusion of whether people, who have never seen each other before, can actually end up finding true love in one another.
Basically, this is just Netlfix’s version of another dating show like 90 Days Fiance (which I religiously watch with my mum), Take Me Out, and Come Dine With Me. All of which, I seem to enjoy purely for the drama I guess.
So, read on to find the answer to the question of whether love is truly blind...!
That’s a really nice shot...almost for a movie so it seems a bit wasted for a dating show, maybe.
So all these contenders do seem quite open minded about finding love without actually seeing the person.
While I do understand that many dating apps are toxic in the sense that you have to be someone’s physical type in order to get swiped, when you may end up having a great and compatible personality. However, physical appearance still matters and if people decided to date (or even marry, as they’re going to do in this show) before actually seeing someone, you might end up becoming dissatisfied and there is also the possibility of catfishing.
Obviously, in this show, they’re under conditions where everyone will be a reasonable age to date but if this is applied to real life then just about anyone could catfish you. And, if I’ve watched Catfish enough, there is an abundance of catfishers in the world (and people question why I have trust issues????).
Also, I don’t know about everyone else but, somehow when you end up liking someone - they instantly become 10x hotter so...
Lol, okay, so I’m not 30 but I’m pretty sure there are a lot of men who do want commitment at that age...and then there’s a lot of men who don’t. However, you would think that it would be the same for women because not all women want to commit themselves.
(Maybe Ebony just needs to search in other places...)
Lol, don’t we all.
On a side note: I am wondering whether this is just going to be a test for heterosexual couples because I’m pretty sure homosexual people find it hard to find dates too (just saying).
Awwwwwww, the short guy struggle!
Being a short girl myself, most guys are taller than me so I don’t think height has ever been a problem for me. Nevertheless, I will truthfully admit that I probably won’t date a guy who’s shorter than me because it’ll just make me feel weird and that’s probably to do with societal norms that men should always be seen as stronger and taller. There’s also the fact that hugging would be a bit awkward (are we all following or is this just me???) because I’d prefer to be wrapped up in a tall guys arms than having to wrap a short guy in my arms. And the same probably goes for the other way around with tall girls (lol watch Tall Girl to understand the struggle).
Yes, it sounds insensitive but it’s the honest opinion of the majority (or at least what I’ve heard). If you don’t care about height, well, good for you because you are part of that small minority that doesn’t.
Being an English student it does annoy me when I realise that I feed into societal expectations and societal norms because we, as a society (have I said society already???), should attempt to break those norms and become individuals that don’t succumb to judgement of others. Sadly, I have to admit, that these preferences and discriminations does impact my opinions (and everyone else’s opinions) no matter how open I attempt to be.
On the positive side, recognising that we do feed into these discriminative behaviours will make us aware of when we are exercising these prejudices.
(Okay, little rant over).
Haha, this bit looks like one of those game shows when they’re revealing the obstacle course or something.
Well, no, they can’t see you BUT they can *hear* you.
I don’t know about you but voices do play a part in choosing who you want to date because you’re going to be listening to them all day so they might as well have a good voice.
This guy, has that good voice. Seriously, it’s like actual melted chocolate whenever he speaks so if he has a good personality to go with that voice then I think a lot of girls will be after him.
Why does that blue wall divider look like it can blend into the set from H2O Just Add Water???
It seriously looks so cheap and doesn’t even fit that well into the room.
Why didn’t they just put a normal wall there or a mirror???
(Also, this girl going straight for the sweets is such a mood and I stan).
Lol, this guy is straight up taking notes!
(Note: I realised afterwards that they were all given books to take notes so it wasn’t just Mark being a weirdo lol).
So a 10 year age difference between Mark and Jessica which can be quite straining to a relationship (as you can tell from how Mark says “Okay” in such an uncertain way).
Awww, but okay, Mark and Jessica actually seem as though they’ve had a real connection and I hope they don’t let that age difference get between them because I really want them to end up together now!!!!
Why does this guy look like he’s the interviewer at a job interview????
Lol, this answer! It’s like you’re talking about your skills and he’s saying yeah, you seem to have the relevant experience for this job.
That is true; Cameron may talk as if he’s evaluating candidates for a job but he does have a nice voice. It’s quite calm and deep, as if he doesn’t seem like the type to shout.
(Okay, unrelated but, all this talk about food has made me feel quite hungry so I’ve decided to get some oreos. Now let’s procede!)
Lol, she hates breathing?!?
I can’t -
Does she know we need to breathe to survive? What about when you’re exercising? Should we all just keep it in????
Hahahaha! Barnett is actually too funny, mildly offensive but incredibly funny for the viewers.
Lol, he full on yeeted!
Yes, Lexie, I feel the same wayyyyyy!
Oh noooooo, Jessica likes both Mark and Barnett???
Personally I hope she chooses Mark because he just seems really open and seems to have the most in common with her while Barnett seems to be gaining connections with a number of girls. (Fingers crossed she chooses Mark).
Awwwwwwww, okay, this is really sweet. Cameron and Lauren should just end it right there and get married (even though it has been just 4 days). I’m so happy for them!!!!
They’ve come from having that first instant connection to talking about their families (sharing really personal stuff) and then crying together to saying I love you for the first time!
At first I was a tad bit sceptical about their relationship with it being a tad bit robotic but that’s probably because they needed time to adjust and get rid of the awkwardness. The real serious talk where they cried together is what sold me. Cameron truly seems like a sensitive and down to earth guy and that’s exactly what Lauren deserves!
Also that pillow is very strategically placed...
Aw, they’re crying again -
Omg and they trust each other -
They’re actually *perfect*; they better work or else I’m actually going to riot.
Lol, calm down sis.
Omg, is he going to propose????
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww MY HEART!
Cameron: *Proposes to Lauren*
Me:
(Also, on a side note, Jessica and Barnett are having a full-fledged argument over the fact that Mark is so certain that Jessica will choose him. After Barnett telling her that he’s ready to propose, I think Jessica’s leaning toward Barnett which will absolutely break Mark’s heart because I’m pretty sure Mark is also ready to propose. But anyway, back to Lauren and Cameron.)
Yes, Lauren, you look like an absolute stunner!!! Cameron’s jaw is going to be down on the floor!!!!
Oh.
Okay.
So episode 1 just left me on a bit of a *cliffhanger* (that I should have seen coming) so I’m just going to go onto the start of the next episode to see how Cameron and Lauren ended (because that’s all I care about right now, not gonna lie).
Okay, good, they do seem to like what they see. Yay.
Ah okay so that’s the ending (well not the ending of their story because the rest of the series does end up following them up until the wedding where things do seem to get a bit dramatic, for TV purposes of course).
I’m just quite happy for Lauren and Cameron because they do seem to have a connection that is strong and I hope that they do end up getting married despite the racial divide because black women should feel comfortable dating white men and vice versa!
As for everyone else, I feel as though the love triangle between, Jessica, Barnett, and Mark is going to be overplayed for dramatic purposes but I don’t want Mark to get hurt (and I feel as though that’s where this is heading - my poor baby). No one else has really stood out to me (apart from the army girl) so I might watch the next few episodes to see what happens.
So if you like to watch dramatic dating shows, science, and relatively attractive people then watch LOVE IS BLIND on Netflix.
(Also, it only struck me now, and I’m sad that i didn’t notice it before, but everyone is to some degree relatively good looking so there’s not many people who seem as though someone would be massively displeased by their appearance. I guess that if you want to see people get massively displeased then watch the Undateables. This show, however, obviously selected these good looking people for the aesthtetic so i don’t neccessarily think it’s a good science experiment but for entertainment and reality TV drama, yes.)
Anyway, thanks for reading this review on LOVE IS BLIND episode 1 (and the beginning of episode 2). Do you want me to review the rest of the series? Do you have any other series’ or movies or books that you want me to review? Thanks!

more discussion about BnHA 237, and the “bystander effect”
Makeste, it’s been hinted for a long time now that Tomura had personally experienced the bystander effect when he was younger. When he had his little therapy talk with Midoriya at the mall he was pissed at how the people around him were just going about their lives and ignoring other people’s problems, thinking only about themselves. And when Midoriya pointed out that a hero would arrest him, he brought up that although anybody’s quirks could let them fight back and perhaps stop him, no-one would do so if he went on a rampage- their complacency and trust in hero society meant that they couldn’t conceive of such a thing happening to them, and so they would default back to letting heroes or the authorities arrive and save them, rather than saving themselves. Like sheep to a slaughter, they just couldn’t bring themselves to act, because they would rather support a peaceful society that protects them than willingly fully endanger themselves.
I actually liked that Horikoshi made it clear that some people were willing to help Tenko, so it wasn’t that Tenko coincidentally wandered into a street full of uncaring assholes, but his ghoulish appearance was a major factor in driving off the help he so desperately wanted. Just, looking at him, you can see the kid’s gone through something horrible, and if they got involved, they might have risked whatever caused it to happen to them next. They were scared of him, and didn’t want to risk getting involved in something they weren’t equipped to handle. Better to leave it to police, or authorities who have trained for similar situations and can protect themselves. Whereas the ‘defenceless’ citizen could tell at a glance that Tenko was something beyond their ordinary lifestyles, an unspoken threat to their peace and safety. Maybe some did call the police and authorities and Tenko had wandered off. But you can see why, for a society that, because of the whole ‘restrict your quirk and don’t perform heroic actions without a licence’ stuff, has been taught that they’re supposed to act normal and not get involved in dangerous situations or criminal activity, helping Tenko was too personally involving for those citizens.
You also got a hint of that when Tomura was restrained at the bar- the flashback’s words even spell out that “before long a hero will…everyone said things like that, but they all ignored you, didn’t they?” Maybe AFO had a hand in helping Tenko get isolated here. He could have had a subtle quirk that manipulated their emotions and fears to drive them to ignore Tenko, or he could have simply just used his connections to stifle any calls or reports of Tenko’s appearance to the proper authorities, and left him in the ‘care’ of the nearby public. Personally, my money’s on the latter. Either way, his appearance here definitely rings too good to be true- he was probably shadowing Tenko whilst he walked through the streets- but I get the impression that he honestly didn’t do much to make the general public act the way they did towards Tenko. He just let the boy experience the isolation and apathy of a society focused on ignoring danger unless there’s someone authorised to handle it.
It’s actually something that’s pretty common in some Japanese media. There’s a great example of this in the Anime ‘Psycho Pass’, set in a futuristic society that’s kinda a mashup of Minority Report and Mega-City One, wherein a city-wide monitoring system called the ‘Sybil System’ constantly monitors people’s emotional and mental states. Should they exceed an accepted threshold that denotes how likely the person is to committing a crime even in advance of them committing any crimes, that person is pursued by law enforcement and either arrested or executed, so they don’t spread undue stress and emotional instability to people around them and cause more people to become ‘crime co-efficient’.
*
*
(interrupting here to add a *spoiler warning* for season one of Psycho-Pass, just in case anyone is planning on watching it at any point, which I would recommend actually; it’s a pretty good show.)
*
*
The main Villain of Season 1 is a psychopath that, due to his unique mental mind-set and view of people, doesn’t register as9)crime co-efficient when thinking about or committing crimes, rendering him effectively invisible to the system and incapable of being judged or sentenced under it, which is a problem since it’s illegal to hurt others unless authorised by the system. Despite this advantage, much like Shigaraki, the villain can tell how screwed up the world he lives in is, and seeks to awaken others from their blind dependence on the Sybil system, to think and act for themselves. In ep 14, he starts distributing helmets that shield the wearer from the Sybil System’s monitoring, allowing others to commit crimes to their heart’s content. This leads to a harrowing scene where a helmet-wearing stalker, in the middle of a busy, crowded street in public, walks up to his target and beats her to death with a hammer, in full view of everyone. No-one does a thing to stop him, their dependence and complacency making them think it’s some kind of performance art piece, incapable of thinking that it’s anything sinister or a problem for them to take action against. Even as the woman screams for help, they don’t lift a finger, and the Sybil monitoring robots actually start cornering the victim as she bleeds out, confronting her on how her emotional stability has exceeded the acceptable threshold, and she’s now crime co-efficient, even as she dies.
This isn’t the last time the Villain performs social experiments to demonstrate the inherent flaws of humanity in a society that lets a system control and define their actions. He lures the protagonist to an isolated room with a chasm in the middle, no way for them to cross to him, but no obstacles on his side to hide behind. Thanks to his invisibility, even as he speaks of killing more people, admits to his guilt, and tells the protagonist that he will keep hurting more people to prove his point, the Government-issued gun keyed to the Sybil system won’t fire on him. The villain has located and loaded an ordinary gun and left it on the protagonist’s side, challenging them to use it to shoot him dead. The system is incapable of judging him, so the only way for the protagonist to save lives is to take action without it, to act on their own initiative and do the right thing, even if it’s illegal in the eyes of society. The villain is fully willing to risk his own life if It means he can wake one person up for their society-wide bystander syndrome and make them act and think for themselves.
*
*
(END PSYCHO-PASS SPOILERS)
*
*
Honestly, I’d love it if, going forward, Shigaraki took similar steps to underline the inherent flaws in a hero-worshiping society, running social experiments that force heroes to avoid participating and ordinary civilians to make the heroic actions and save the day, just like the twin ferry scene from ‘The Dark Knight’, perhaps closely monitoring everything so he can publicize how they made the correct decisions if the government tries to condemn them for taking illegal actions to save themselves. It would be a great way of causing an indirect attack on ordered society. And freeing up people to use their quirks more freely would also tie into the MLA’s vision of society, so that could be a case for what’s left of the army to work with Tomura for now, rather than get steamrolled by Giganto again and their cause forgotten.
If that’s what ends up happening, then that could be the main cause for Deku and Shigaraki to clash time and again against each other, as Midoriya keeps interfering in these experiments and performing heroic deeds to save those in need. Because the one thing that’s always been consentient about Deku- powerless or not, legal or not, he will step in to save someone regardless of the reasons not to get involved. It’s a shame, really, that Tenko and Midoriya didn’t meet when they were kids- you know Deku would have helped him because he needed it, regardless of the potential danger.
---
first off, I just want to clarify that I do understand this scene, and I understand that the series has been clearly hinting at a scenario like this almost from the start. I can also understand and accept the logic behind it. it’s just that I dislike it. I understand the point it’s trying to make; I just disagree with it. I think it’s cynical and dystopian. I think the world is better than that, and I think people are better than that. I’m not gonna go into a whole rant, but there’s this psychological phenomenon called negativity bias that basically means that negative things tend to leave more of a psychological impact in general than positive things. put that together with the constant bombardment of negative shit in the media and online and basically everywhere, and over time that tends to lead toward people perceiving the world as being worse than it actually is. this is something that really bothers me about modern online culture, actually, because the overall effect it has on a lot of people (myself included) is to leave them feeling overwhelmed and depressed, and depression in turn drains your energy and makes it more difficult for people to actually do anything about the bad shit. which, I suspect, is intentional on the part of the institutions responsible for most of said media. let’s energize the far right, and dishearten and discourage the left.
but anyways, that’s getting off track and veering towards territory I don’t have the spoons to discuss further lol. okay, so back on topic. a lot of people pointed out that we don’t actually know whether anyone called the police or not, and it’s very possible that they did. this is a fair point. as for AFO subtly having a hand in influencing the passerby’s emotions as well, I’m all for that too. that was always my original theory. because it’s always been clear that, at least from Tomura’s perspective, this is exactly what went down -- something bad happened, and no one tried to help him. we’ve always known that was the case. I just hoped that it wouldn’t prove to actually be the case, and that we would learn that Tomura had misunderstood, or that AFO had intervened. I didn’t hope for this because I thought it had canon support and was logical; I hoped it because I, personally, disagree with the supposition that the average person, when faced with a situation in which a child is in trouble and needs help, would not help, regardless of the potential danger to them. my own personal belief, supported by my admittedly limited personal experience, is that they would.
lastly, I have seen Psycho-Pass (the first season, anyway; I need to check out season 2 one of these days) and enjoyed it a lot, actually. but it’s one of those things I enjoy simply as a what-if, kind of like The Hunger Games. it’s great entertainment if you’re in the mood for some dark and gritty stuff. but it’s a very 1984 type of worst-case scenario government-controls-your-thoughts type of story, and not something I personally would go “oh yeah, I could see this happening in real life” while watching it. it’s more of a fun cautionary tale warning people about the potential consequences of taking extremes too far, even in the name of the greater good. plus it has these really awesome guns that transform and look really cool and splatter the shit out of people. and Amano did the character designs, so if you liked the character designs in KHR it’s definitely worth a watch for that alone, just putting that out there.
anyway. I’ve completely run out of time, so I’ll just post this and I apologize for not wrapping up my argument neatly. or, you know, at all sob.

Crime
Peter Parker x Reader
Masterlist
Enjoy :)
—————
You snuck out of your bedroom window at 1:00 am, dressed in all black, and a black plastic mask in your hand. You put the mask on and find your way down to the ground. The streets of Queens are an eerie quiet tonight. You tiptoe your way to the convenience store on the corner. It is the only one that does not put up a cage when it closes. You take your robotic contraption out of your pocket and place it above the alarm system. With a few clicks, the cameras are turned off and the doors are unlocked. You enter quietly, keeping low to the ground. You search around the shelves. You saw so many snacks that sounded so appealing to you right now. Your stomach growled. You shook your head. You’re not here for you, you’re here for Elliot. You grab one of each of his favorite snacks and place them in a plastic bag. A thought went through your mind, making you feel guilty for using plastic when you know it is bad for the environment. Yet then you retorted with another, why steal when you know it is bad for society? On your way out you notice a package of batteries, something your Mom said she needed. You grab those and a magazine she might like. She probably won’t have the time to read it, she works two jobs for the family. When you are just about ready to leave the store, you hear the front door open. “Hey man, what are you up to?” You run to the back door. The guy chases you and you get you weapon out of your pocket. It was a knife, but it was a special one you made by yourself with special technology. You didn’t want to use it, but you might have to. When you run out into the alleyway, you hear a thwip sound and he grabs your wrist. Something sticky was stuck to your shirt. Your knife glows purple as it works to help you cut it off and break free. But two more twips occur and you’re stuck against the brick wall. “Well, Mr. what do we have here?” You struggle as he rips the plastic bag from your hands. “Looks like a bunch of random stuff. What are you up to, man?” You scoff. You so badly want to punch him in the face for assuming you’re a man. You use your knife again to get out, grab the plastic bag, and give the guy a small cut on his right forearm. The guy groans in pain, but you don’t hesitate to run home, where it was now almost 2:00 am. You try and get some decent sleep before school the next day.
Running off of five hours of sleep did not bode you well, however, Elliot was happy to have some snacks and your Mom was relieved to have batteries. You were doing all that you could to help your family out of this rough time. At first your Mom questioned what you were doing to get the supplies, but now she just says for you to stay safe. The one class that was intriguing enough for you to stay awake was your engineering class. Here you were learning about how to finagle technology and make cool things. You made the knife off of school grounds, obviously. Peter was in your class, and today you both were partnered up with an assignment. You decided to make a prototype for a fun little gadget you can hook up to your computer. It involved a lot of advanced programming, which you had more experience with, so he mainly watched and you both talked. “You’re really good at this, Y/N.” You smiled a little deviously. “You just wait until it’s done.” You were typing out the program on the computer. “Would you mind handing me that battery, I know it’s meant for a car, but I need a place to start.” You yawn. Peter picks up the battery and groans. “Everything all right, Parker?” Peter nods as he places the battery on the table next to you. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He was out of breath. “I just hurt my arm is all.” You made a pouty face but didn’t look up from the screen. “What happened?” Peter did not answer right away, so you looked over to him. He was gripping his right forearm, which is, coincidentally, where you hurt someone last night. “I uh just was working out too hard, pulled a muscle.” You give him a sideways sneer, not that you don’t doubt he works out though, you just doubt he is telling the truth. “Can I see it? Your arm?” Peter looks at you like a worried puppy. He finally rolls up his sleeve and you see his scabbed up arm. Yep. You definitely did that with your knife. “If you got that at the gym I would be pretty worried. You ever think to bandage that up?” Peter shakes his head and rolls up his sleeve. “I didn’t really have the time, busy night, and I went to bed late.” Then the bell rang. You closed out of the computer and quickly packed your bags. “Come with me.” You say to Peter and he follows. You bring him to the haunted stairway of the school. It is not really haunted, just no one uses it. You hide behind the corner so the camera can’t see you. You pull out your knife from your backpack. “Woah...” Peter says. You sush him and put your hand over his mouth. “Just trust me.” You cause the knife to glow yellow. You pull up his sleeve. You hover it over his skin and slowly start to slice along the scab, the knife healing the wound. Peter stands there, astonished. When all is said and done, Peter asks “How did you do that?” You swiftly put your knife back in your bag. “It all depneds upon your intention when using it. If you want it to heal, it will heal. If you want it to hurt...” You trail off. “I’m sorry for last night.” Peter looks at you, and you can feel his confusion. “I’ve got to get to class.” You rush out of the hallway and head to your class. You felt bad for abandoning Peter, but now things are awkward. You know he is a neighborhood vigilante and he knows you are a neighborhood robber.
You spent the rest of the day at school with an eased conscious. Well, somewhat. You still don’t know Peter’s intentions, if he is going to do anything with the information he has about you. Yet, then again he must be wondering the same thing. As soon as the school bell rung, you rushed through the halls to get out and go to the elementary school to pick up Elliot. You walked on the sidewalk as you felt someone grab your wrist. “What the hell...?” You turn around to see it was Peter. You pull your hand away. “Y/N, I need to know why you are doing this. You could do some great things with this technology.” You roll your eyes. You turn into an abandoned alleyway and Peter follows you. “I’m doing this because I have to. To help my family survive. I know it is wrong, but I mean no harm. We just need enough to get by is all.” Peter looks down. “Look, I don’t expect you to understand. Now I’ve got to go pick up my little brother so I will see you later.” You leave the alleyway and go to the elementary school. You walk Elliot home and he eats one of the snacks you got him. The night was hectic, and when it came to 1:00 am, the time for your usual rounds of stealing, you were overcome with exhaustion. Then, you hear a tap on your window. You carefully approach the window and peep inside the curtain. It was Peter dressed in his spider suit. You open the window. “What are you doing here?” You whisper yell. “I’m here to help you out, in a legal way of course.” You cross your arms. “We don’t want your chairty.” Peter pulls out a few slips of paper. “You sure? You don’t want to know what I have?” You shrug and open your window wider. Peter climbs in your bedroom and takes off his mask. “I have a voucher for five free sandwhiches at the deli, a pass for the subway, a coupon for 50% off your purchase at the grocery store, and a $20 bill. I got this stuff by doing good things, and the people I have helped gave me something in return. I usually don’t accept what they offer, but since I saw your family needed help, I thought I would see how many strings I could pull.” You struggle internally. Your family could really use these things. “Why are you doing this?” Peter shrugs. “I like to bring out the good in people, and keep this community safe. I know you’re a good person, Y/N, but stealing is wrong, so I am trying to stop you from doing that.” Your eyes start to tear up. Peter stretches his arm out towards you, offering you the papers. A tear rolls down your cheek as you grab the papers. “Thank you, Peter. You don’t know how much this means to me.” You go in for an unexpected hug with Peter. He hugs you back as you cry a little. He shushes you and rubs your back. You broke from the hug, but Peter didn’t. “Hey, Y/N. Look at me.” You look up at him. He takes his hands and wiped the tears off your cheeks. Then he locks eyes with you. “It’s okay. You are doing the best you can. You are a very smart and talented person. But I am going to help you now so you don’t have to steal anymore, okay?” You nod your head and sniffle. “Thank you.” You hug Peter once more. When you break from the hug you both stared into each others eyes. Peter leans his head down to slowly kiss you on the lips. You felt butterflies in your tummy and your legs melted. When the kiss broke, Peter caressed his thumb over your cheek. “It’s all right, now get some rest.” He put his mask on and climbed out your window.

Tell us your OCs. I. Have. Intrigue
oh okay um-
first off here’s a link to the masterlist
second a quick explanation of all my non-fandom ocs’ universes i guess? putting them under a cut cos they are LONG… sorry if you just wanted a brief summary of the characters themselves i just saw an opportunity to info dump about all the worldbuilding i’ve done and i took it
the universe with all of the animal ocs (Skye-Inklii on the masterlist) is definitely my most worked-on universe to date cos of all the semi-connected stories in it, the complexity of the world, and the pantheon i’ve kind of come up with? basically it takes place on a continent that has yet to be named but it’s a big place in the middle of an ocean called the Sparkling Sea. the continent is divided into multiple “Kingdoms,” all surrounding the Royal City (where the most important families live) in the middle of the continent. these kingdoms include the Ocean Kingdom (basically a huge gulf connected to the Sparking Sea filled with water-dwelling people, who aren’t mermaids but do have gills and stuff along with the general frame of land-dwellers) and the Smoldering Kingdom (formerly a prosperous matriarchy that was a hotspot (hah) for trading, next to a volcano. almost completely desolated by a conflict commonly known as the Brushfire War, with Ka being the only survivor. residents here were often confused for actual fires from afar, considering their particular subspecies often had small flames all over their body, which could not be snuffed out.). the Royal City is surrounded by an area known as the Outskirts (working name), where people like Skye, Pine, and Lavender who didn’t really have any particular elemental traits of any kind or came from a different kingdom lived. this area is known for having a bustling market and a diverse populace, unlike the other kingdoms whose residents almost always look similar. also there’s a royal family in the Royal City that rule most of the continent (each Kingdom has their own government but really the royal family is up top). the royal family has a royal scientist (undertale influenced a bunch of this ok), currently Hawthorn, previously his father Bramble. Bramble did a bunch of bad stuff so I’m not gonna dwell on him. garbageboy stinkman belongs in the toilet
the universe with Hazel and the ghosties is a universe where basically it’s almost the same as real life but magic, ghosts, demons, and angels exist and it’s not as technologically advanced (phones exist but color tv does not and people don’t rely as much on technology) Hazel and Michael/Virus both have some angel and some demon blood, Michael having more demon than angel and Hazel with vice versa, both having wings of some sort due to this. both their parents are basically human but their descendants (from a time where demons and angels were free to walk the earth) had children with demons/angels and some of those traits got passed down. it’s very rare to pass down traits from one of these entities (about 1 in 1,000 for just one) but Ezekiel/Chance got very lucky and got a little of both, compared to his siblings Cassidy/Jinx and Lisa/Boo who got nothing (but after becoming ghosts Jinx did get some demon traits and Boo got some angel traits). not all ghosts are friendly so those with an affinity for locating the undead are hired to exorcise houses and whatnot, called “ghosters.” Michael was one of the more famous ghosters and so he’s commonly called upon to help in areas, so he and Hazel traveled a lot. i should also mention that with certain rituals one can summon a ghost to help with something (finances, love, etc.) but it’s very hard to pull off (to stabilize a ghost and keep it from returning to the afterlife you have to make a very special necklace from specific gemstones depending on the ghost, and one for yourself to make sure the ghost can’t hurt you and it has to obey your orders (although you can free it to do what it wishes if you want)) anyways there’s a really dangerous demon that broke free from a seal placed on it hundreds of years ago commonly referred to as the Stalker, the Nothing, and things like that. Michael unknowingly accepted a job to rid an abandoned house in a quaint little town of this thing, and brought Hazel with him. it uh… didn’t go well :D this thing HATES angels cos a half-angel sealed it away so it attempted to kill Hazel because she bears a strong resemblance to the being that sealed it away. Michael didn’t like that so he barely managed to seal it away for a few more years but got like,,, a LOT of vital organs ripped out in the process. this, understandably, traumatized Hazel cos that was her last living family member being ripped to shreds in front of her so she went back to the town where she, first, scared 99% of the population cos she was DRENCHED in blood but then she got cleaned up and sent to a nearby orphanage where she was immediately adopted by a p mean family cos they thought she could summon a ghost to make them rich? she ended up summoning Virus (who didn’t recognize her cos ghosts lose most of their memories except for their moment of death, Chance is an exception), and then Jinx, Chance, and Boo all at once cos they died within a few minutes of each other. this took a hard right into backstory territory so imma move on
Gardenia and Ashe live in a world where, rarely, children will be born with their souls basically attuned to an element of nature (often with different subclasses) or creature. these phenomenons are called elementals and mutants, respectively. even rarer, however, is a child being born as both. Gardenia was born without eyes, with the left side of her face being just smooth where her eye should be and the right having a, well, gardenia growing in the place of an eye. also when she bleeds small flowers grow in the wound, which was assumed to be a sort of defense mechanism to plug the wound. because of these, when she was born, she was designated a plant elemental of the flower subclass. ashe was born part-fire elemental, part-salamander mutant. they both ended up at a school specifically for elementals and mutants where they could learn not to destroy things, which is where these two met in about 7th grade? they stayed friends since then and eventually fell in love (even if Gardenia couldn’t see Ashe, she loved her personality and her voice). probably the only universe with no murder so far
Meredy and Connor are robotic entities known as “mechae,” Meredy being made to entertain while Connor was made to fix. these entities were mass-produced to help humans in a futuristic society. they are made with 6 chips: Empathy, Ethics, Functionality, Memory, Intelligence, and Personality. if one of these chips break the entire mecha basically breaks and has to be recalled. Nikki is just a reclusive mechanic who works with Connor because xe saved him from being scrapped after faulty wiring and a broken Functionality chip were discovered upon his activation, causing him to frequently experience small shocks that either overload his system and shut him down or just make him unable to move for a few minutes. Nikki is trying to fix him up but for now just hides him from the public because xe doesn’t want him to be taken away from xir. Meredy is just a broken entertainment mecha whose Functionality and Ethics chip went haywire during a performance, causing uh... not great things? no one died but they got p injured cos metal is heavy and she ran away, eventually getting to Nikki’s shop after they met in a back alley while Meredy was hiding and Nikki was fishing for parts. that’s basically all i have for now
oh christ where do i start with the zodiacs. okay lady fate got sick of having to look after EVERYONE after they died so she basically chose 15 random people (1 for each zodiac sign except for Gemini and Pisces, who got 2) and made it so when they die (mostly by unfortunate circumstances) they go to a special place in the afterlife where every dead person is called their Dominion (i. e. Aquarius Dominion, Taurus Dominion, etc.), and every person in this world goes to the Dominion corresponding to their zodiac sign where the corresponding Zodiac... doesn’t exactly rule over them but controls the Dominion in a way? they basically get to decide what everything looks like and stuff and they get to live in a big ol mansion with everything they could ever need. all of the Dominions are spread in a circle around a central area known as the Hub where people from different signs can intermingle. the entire area has this neat little feature where once you die and get there, any physical ailments are gone. couldn’t walk while you were alive? well now you can! missing one or more limbs? you can choose to get cool substitute limbs made of sparkling ether that function like normal limbs! were you experiencing gender dysphoria in life? your new body fits your preferred gender! finally, you get a necklace or other piece of jewelry that designates your sign so people can tell what you are! i haven’t worked on this world as much cos i didn’t have too many ideas at first but i really like it :o
Endris and Kyu are demons under service of the Demon King. Endris is a demon species known as a Kahre, a genetically engineered soldier race, but his test tube broke and it was too dangerous to put him in a new one so he’s just smol and ended up as a personal servant to the king. Kyu is a Senru, a general/advisor race, who’s like... a giant suck-up. he mostly refers to Endris as “defect” unless he’s saying that Kyu needs to go speak with the king for a bit because then he’s all sunshine and rainbows. there are also the Erina, small scientists and doctors, and Wisps, tiny lil servants that are often formed when a new soul enters the Underworld. i really liked designing all the demons for this universe and i’m prolly gonna make more uwu
Carrie and Zade just live in a normal world? like they could totally be real people in real life and their stories wouldn’t change. Zade, who is Carrie’s best friend since they were toddlers, is a trans guy, so he was having all sorts of anxiety when he had to explain to her why he would rather not be called the name she’s been referring to him as for 10 years. she was definitely fine with it though. as long as he’s happy, she’s happy! but Zade started transitioning in like 8th grade so most other people weren’t as nice cos middle school sucks, and Carrie was basically his only friend for a while. Carrie eventually figured out (mistakenly, i might add) that she was the reason Zade was getting bullied so she assumed that if she was gone he would be happier and have more friends so uh... she did a self oof? her assumption was wrong, obviously. but people did leave him alone for a while to let him grieve.
sorry for the dark turn at the end? but yeah that’s a basic explanation of most of my original universes \ ( -ワ- ) / if you have any questions feel free to ask! also PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know if i’m being offensive in any way in any of these??? i really don’t want to offend anyone but i’m an idiot so yeah i probably screwed up a lot

Missing Characters Analysis Pt.2
Okay, so! It’s been a while since part 1 of this series, but I’m not giving up on it, because I had a lot of fun with the first one, and I want to explore all the other missing characters. If you missed it, here’s part 1. That being said, probably none of these are going to have the same format because of the differences between the characters and their role in the story, so in a way I suppose this isn’t a real continuation, but whatever.
For this part, we’re going to talk about Getsuyaku, who similar to Rashi, although to a lesser extent, I found to play a mostly symbolic role in the story. While he does directly interact with the characters and the story itself, and therefore has a more grounded role than Rashi, for this post at least, I’m going to focus on more of the symbolism, which means that you now get to sit through me rambling about class analysis for the next 1500 words or so. Sorry in advance.
Now the details of No.6’s class system is a discussion for another time, but I’m making it the theme of Getsuyaku’s analysis because he serves as basically the sole representation of the Lost Town residents, who occupy a position we would most likely consider working class. As a working class citizen, he is in an interesting position of existing both within the city and outside of it, in this case literally, since his job at the Correctional Facility takes him outside the wall, and he therefore has the ability to communicate, at least to an extent, between the middle class of No.6 and the impoverished West Block. Although he is a citizen of No.6, it is shown to us in several instances that he is not treated equally to other citizens, having to do unsanitary work and being given no respect by anyone other than other Lost town residents. On one hand, he is treated as being below the other citizens of No.6, not deserving rights or respect, and being basically equivalent to a West Block resident who had managed to break into the city. On the other hand, he is misunderstood by West Block residents, who believe that because he lives within the walls that he is comfortable and taken care of. This is also an internal struggle for Getsuyaku, though, as we see that he feels an obligation to continue working for the city—although whether this is out of fear or genuine appreciation for No.6 is somewhat unclear— therefore maintaining his position as “above” the West Block residents while at the same time recognizing his position within the city as lesser than other citizens and reluctantly going against it by selling things to Inukashi in order to survive and improve his own life.
The divide between “inside” and “outside” the wall is made extremely clear by most of the characters throughout the story, and yet here we see a rare (or maybe not so rare) example of someone who, for symbolic reasons, occupies both spaces. For the most part, each character in No.6 serves as a way to compare two or more different groups of people or conflicting ideas, perhaps most notably Shion in his representation of both the elite class of No.6 as well as those who have been banished from the city altogether. The importance of these comparisons is often to highlight their differences and incompatibility with one another; however, in this case we see Getsuyaku as a unifying force rather than a divisive one. By occupying both spaces simultaneously, he is able to represent both The Lost Town residents via his citizenship within No.6, as well as to a certain extent the residents of West Block who, like Getsuyaku, are forced into criminal activity as a means to basic survival. Within this dual identity, we are able to see that despite their statuses as either “inside” or “outside” the wall, these two groups are fundamentally almost the same to a great extent. The wall becomes not a great divide between those that are deserving and those who are not, but instead a thin line between barely scraping by and abject poverty that is able to be crossed at any time.
Along with the burden of simply doing undesirable work, Getsuyaku, and therefore the working class as a whole, is also forced to play a significant role in the maintaining of the system through the control of information. No.6, and most societies in general, are built upon the control of information, and the withholding of certain information from the general public. Getsuyaku’s job at the Correctional Facility necessitates that he learn what is likely otherwise classified information about No.6, whether that be the conditions under which he has to work or any suspicious materials he may find while sorting through the city's trash. While this information would clearly be useful to both regular citizens and those working against the city such as Yoming, he is obligated to withhold this information out of fear of punishment by the government, and therefore takes part in his own oppression. This is of course not a voluntary position, as his death shows us, but nonetheless an important aspect in the world building of the story.
Speaking of his death, the murder of Getsuyaku also serves as the first time that we directly see fatal violence enacted upon a regular citizen of the city. While it's clear by this point in the story that No.6 is not above murdering its own citizens, and other instances have been implied, such as the case of Yomings wife, this scene cannot be understated. Other deaths take place within predefined contexts: part of the experimentation with the bees, a direct response to going against the city, culling older people to preserve resources. Obviously none of these things are ethically justifiable, but they come with explanations that we can on some level understand for the purposes of the story. Getsuyaku’s death on the other hand comes with almost no explanation, and even from the perspective of No.6 itself, is less justified than the Manhunt. He is murdered not because the officers know he has done anything deemed to be “wrong”, but simply because they are suspicious of him, because in their minds it is easier to claim that he is to blame for the malfunctioning robots than it is to believe that it was an accident or regular breakdown. The fact that we know the circumstances of the incident don't matter in this moment because we are not in a position to make a decision about him.
Getsuyaku’s position as the first civilian casualty of the last portion of the story also serves a narrative purpose, that of a symbolic catalyst for the revolution that takes up a large portion of Volume 9. As the representation for Lost Town, we see that although other groups will be punished for disobedience, the true targets of No.6's master plan are the Lost Town citizens, the working class. Through their repression, No.6 maintains control over the baseline functioning of the city (waste management, energy production, food production, etc), as well as the vital information that is created and gathered through these industries. Because the working class is in control of these fundamental processes by virtue of being the ones working there, any disobedience on their part, no matter what the reason, is taken as a direct action against the city as a whole, even if another explanation for the incident exists. Through his death, we see that No.6, however incorrect they may be, views Getsuyaku, as well as the rest of the working class, as disposable and replaceable. To an extent, we see that this mindset has been internalized by many members of Lost Town, who, while upset at a person’s disappearance, have accepted it as a fairly normal part of their lives. In Getsuyaku’s case, however, enough of the right characters, namely Yoming, Lily, and Karan, are involved with Getsuyaku and his family that his disappearance serves as a breaking point for this internalization, indirectly resulting in many of the events of the last volume of the novels.
For those in West Block, Getsuyaku’s death serves an entirely different purpose. While it is only witnessed by a few characters, his death confirms for Inukashi what we as the reader already know, that No.6 has no issue with disposing of its own citizens if they are no longer useful. By extension, we also see that he was never really considered a citizen in the first place, but rather an unconscious tool for the maintenance of the city. Being able to see directly the cruelty of No.6 towards those living even within the city disrupts the commonly held belief of the West Block residents that the inside of No.6 is a utopia, and that it instead may be just as bad in some ways as it is outside of the walls. At least West Block doesn’t try to give off the impression of being a safe and comfortable place, right? At this point there is no hope of a better life for the West Block residents, and they are instead faced with the reality that as long as they were not born into power, they would never truly be able to gain it within the city.
So what does this mean in terms of the anime? The exclusion of Getsuyaku from the anime, while understandable given the time constraints and already rushed ending, ultimately still affects the story and our perception of how No.6 and its class system actually function. It draws a firm line between No.6 and West Block, leaving no room for the portrayal of the proximity between the working and poverty classes, and giving no opportunities for them to interact or assist each other in any way. Ultimately, it shows a picture of a world in which downward mobility only occurs to a certain extent, and that even those who have fallen or have always occupied the lowest rung of the working class will still be protected from interacting with or becoming the impoverished “others” by the government. In his absence, we do not get to really see the reality of working class life in No.6, and are therefore unable to make a significant connection to what would otherwise be an important moral center to the story. The cruelty of No.6 is still blatantly obvious, but it is never shown to have been turned directly onto its own citizens. This is starting to drift into some themes I want to explore in another post, but you get the idea. In attempting to reflect an image of our own world, No.6 as an anime fails to construct the world as it really is, with blurred lines between different “classes” of people, and instead draws strict barriers between lower classes that instead serve to reinforce the mainstream concept of a disconnect between working and poverty class people that makes them enemies rather than allies.
If you made it to the end, thanks for reading! I tried really hard to make this not about a bunch of stuff other than Getsuyaku, but he’s so wrapped up in the other aspects of the world building that I’m not really sure I succeeded in that regard. I had a lot of fun with this one though, so hopefully you enjoyed it too!

top 5 mr. robot scenes?
ohh alright yeah lets do this. i love this show to pieces, i love the way it’s shot and put together, love the song and color choices- i’m ready
obviously, mr robot spoilers ahead! please don’t read further if you’re not caught up.
1. season 03 episode 01 - “i fucked society alright.”
- hello yes this scene was fantastic. the perfect introduction as to where elliot stands in this particular season. he’s radiating confidence for the first time in a while and he’s furious- with himself, with the revolution and, now more than ever, with society. i personally thought his entire monologue read like a poetry recital. the pacing rami delivered the speech with was incredibly captivating- and that, compared with the utter chaos around him as he walks down the street, is some high quality stuff!! when he stops in front of the wall memorial in that perfectly symmetrical shot, there’s thunder to put empashis on all people who’ve lost their lives because of fsociety- like a HUGE reality check- and the scene change at the end with a red, dangerous light as elliot says “fuck me”?? i fuckin’ felt all of that.
2. season 03 episode 06 - “does everybody know something i don’t?”
- i don’t think there’s a single show that fits the quote “the higher you rise the harder you fall” than mr robot. not only for the characters, no, but for the viewers especially. throughout the entire episode elliot & mr robot fight over control, it’s intense and it’s frustrating and you can feel how incredibly difficult this is on both of them. we’re lead to focus and put all our faith in elliot here, cheer him on to save this fucking building- so once he did?? it was like a huge sigh of relief- him and mr robot did something TOGETHER and it was so, so satisfying. exCEPT NOPE NOT AT ALL. as elliot pushes through the small group of people and stands in front of that tv, all background noise cuts off completely so the news can come in more clearly; and it’s crushing. when the end credits roll, you can still hear the news- and i absolutely loved that. i loved that i was forced to look at a black screen (basically nothing) as i listened to that devastating report. it made you feel hopeless, which i’m assuming was the intention.
3. season 02 episode 12 - “patient predator”
- or, as it’s more commonly known, the FBI board scene. because FUCK if that wasn’t incredibly executed. but then again, the reveal scenes in mr robot are some next level stuff altogether. the song playing throughout this whole thing, “the moth & the flame”, is great! it’s slow and calm, kinda representative of the python approach dom explains. i loved this scene because it told us hey, the FBI are, in fact, not just dragging behind these mastermind hackers like clueless little flies- but they freaking got them down to a T. the zoom-in on elliot’s eyes on the photo, and then the switch back to darlene like a silent communication between them?? like, they got us huh? gOOD stuff. give that song another listen!
4. season 02 episode 07 - “let’s shake on it”
- the prison reveal scene. this has to be on here because i seriously DID NOT see that coming. the moment krista’s face changed into this sickly pale concern my mind started overheating like oh boy what now. and HO did that buildup deliver!! again, the song choice (sound & color) was incredible- the eerie beginning it has did nothing short of setting the mood right- and after that it’s just incredible camerawork. elliot’s way of “coping with it” had been so hopelessly longing for normality, and it really put a lot of things into perspective! i still can’t believe some nerd on reddit figured this twist out in advance, tho.
5. season 03 episode 08 - “because you said you were sick.”
- okay so ‘don’t delete me’ might be my absolute favorite episode. it was the turning point of the season and it was so, so important. in so many ways. it started off harsh, it had been incredibly hard for elliot to find something to keep holding onto after seeing how deep the rabbithole goes. so as the episode goes on, as he’s spending time with trenton’s brother (brb crying)- aka this annoying little brat who bickers with him every chance he gets, he’s coming to realize that his work isn’t over. in fact, it’s only just starting. and the fact that that WHOLE rush of motivation came from a small, seemingly insignificant act of kindness is SO real. it’s in the little things. my heart broke into so many pieces during that episode but god was it a great one. 10/10 could use a lollipop right now.
dAmn that was a lot longer than i thought it’d be! i’m sorry about literally not being able to shut up about this show. so yo if youre still reading i encourage you to tell me what your favorite scenes were & why, im up for mr robot discussions 24/7

9 ways today's society is like the one that filled Earth with garbage in WALL-E

9 ways today's society is like the one that filled Earth with garbage in WALL-E
More than 10 years after it was released, watching Pixar’s film WALL-E today is a chilling experience.
The backdrop of WALL-E and EVE’s robot love story is a dystopian society where humans have abandoned Earth to their trash and left robots to clean up while they cruise space.
When the much-loved animation came out in 2008, it was a bittersweet warning to use less, move more, and stop staring at the damn screen.
But we obviously didn’t heed it too well, because as of 2019, we already have an uncomfortable amount in common with the futuristic humans aboard the Axiom spaceship.
The one thing the film’s creators were way off on? The timeline. WALL-E is set in 2805 (humans left Earth in 2105), but according to some key measures, we might not be that far off in reality.
Here are nine signs we’re going down the same path as the humans in WALL-E.
1. We can’t stop buying stuff
Thanks to technological and social advances, every day more people are moving out of poverty and into the consumer class. We’re also living in a more peaceful time than ever before. What do we do with all that extra time, energy, and money?
We consume.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
The average US household now owns 300,000 things; 10-year-olds in the UK have 238 toys – but only play with around 12 of them. We shop so much, we increasingly have to rent off-site storage units. And then every few seasons we throw it all out and start again.
With the internet opening up new avenues for consumption – shopping on Instagram, influencer-inspired buying, and now even publishers telling us what to buy – it’s not hard to imagine how our desire to buy new things is overwhelming the planet.
The Buy n Large tagline “Too much garbage in your face? There’s plenty of space out in space!” playing on loop in WALL-E could easily apply.
We never see the humans of the film before they leave Earth for the Axiom, but based on the waste and omnipresent advertising they leave behind, it’s safe to say they liked to shop, too.

So is there a way to keep shopping and avoid that fate? Probably not – in the United Nations’ (UN) draft Global Sustainable Development Report 2019, researchers argue that this consumerist system isn’t compatible with protecting the planet.
“Economies have used up the capacity of planetary ecosystems to handle the waste generated by energy and material use,” the report explains.
2. We’re drowning in our own waste
The major plot line of WALL-E is that Earth has been overrun with garbage, making it unsuitable for plant or animal life. The WALL-E robots were tasked with cleaning it up, while humans enjoyed a five-year off-planet cruise (which, spoiler alert, ended up lasting centuries).
While we may not have city-sized trash mounds today, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a problem with the waste we’re spewing out into the environment.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
Pollution is already one of the leading causes of death worldwide, killing 9 million people each year and predicted to get worse. A World Health Organisation study last year found that 93 percent of children on the planet are now breathing in polluted air.
With plastic waste and rubbish choking our plants and animals, and human-induced climate change increasing ocean acidification and forest fires, the planet is becoming a less friendly place for life – even our own fertility rates are dropping.
And it’s only going to get worse, with China soon refusing to take in any of the nearly 4,000 shipping containers of waste the US sends each day for recycling.
3. We’re dominated by mega companies
In WALL-E, society has become dominated by a mega conglomerate punfully called Buy n Large, or BnL. By the time Earth is abandoned, BnL has become so omnipresent, it not only covers cities with its advertisements and discarded products, but also owns the spacecraft humans leave on. It also has the power to declare global emergencies.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
Today, there are just a handful of megacompanies that have huge power of the rest of us and our futures, capable of driving fake news, opioid crises, and covering up climate change.
In fact, just 100 companies are responsible for 71 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
And while the whole space thing might sound futuristic, don’t forget retail giant Amazon not only sells billions of products to consumers all around the world, its founder Jeff Bezos also owns Blue Origin – an aerospace company that aims to help facilitate ‘private human access to space’.
(Blue Origin)
4. We’re lonely, despite being more connected
Humans are more connected than ever before thanks to technology, and yet we also report feeling more isolated than ever. In many parts of the world, we’re having less sex and birth rates are dropping. Twenty-two percent of millennials say they have “no friends”.
This type of empty connection is mirrored in WALL-E, where the robots are more human than the humans are.
On the Axiom, humans have digital screens perpetually beamed in front of their faces that allow them to video chat, but we don’t see any intimate family groups. No one touches (until WALL-E and EVE come along), and we don’t see couples together, or parents with children – toddlers are raised by AI in classrooms.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
5. Obesity is on the rise
Okay, this one’s obvious – one of the most striking things about the humans in WALL-E is that they’re all fat. Just look at how the Axiom’s captains have changed since the mission launched.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
To be fair, space reduces muscle mass and makes you puffy.
But we’re not on a dissimilar path of weight gain. Obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975 and are still increasing.
In the film, it probably has something to do with the fact that people no longer walk. Even as babies, they use self-driving hoverchairs to get them around.
That isn’t so far fetched – with self-driving car technology moving out of the lab, and people more sedentary than ever before, it’s not hard to imagine us all sitting back and letting technology drive us around.
And then there’s this photo, taken in Walmart in 2015:
(mlevid/Imgur)
In fact, BMW has already made something that looks suspiciously like the WALL-E chair, their ‘personal mobility concept’ vehicle i-REAL.

6. We can’t stop staring at screens
I’m not just talking about social media here, but also Netflix, YouTube, Hulu… While we do use technology to connect with friends and family across the globe in ways we couldn’t in the past, the average adult today consumes five times more information daily than a counterpart in 1986.
We’re also watching close to eight hours of TV a day. Our binge-watching has even become an environmental issue.
The humans in WALL-E are just a small step up from this, with their screens now projected in front of them all the time – giving them 24/7 access to ads, entertainment, and shopping.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
In one telling scene, two friends are chatting to each other online but never realise they’re actually right next to each other. Another woman only realises there’s a gigantic pool on the cruise ship after her screen is interrupted by WALL-E getting in her way.
Sound familiar?
7. We feel useless
In a crucial line in the film, the Axiom’s Captain B. McCrea tells the autopilot “I don’t want to survive, I want to live.” Up until that point, the only thing he’s done himself is read out the morning announcements.
The rest of the humans on board don’t seem to work at all. They’re purposeless – their roles replaced by technology and their home planet destroyed. Even back on Earth, WALL-E was left behind just cubing up waste and moving it from one place to the next.
(Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
Many of us don’t feel much more productive. A 2015 poll in the UK revealed that 37 percent of Brits think their job is meaningless. And scientists have predicted that roughly half of all jobs will be replaced by technology – not centuries from now, but in the next 20 years.
On top of that, we often feel powerless in the face of the climate crisis, with our best attempts at action dwarfed by the negative impacts from industry and government.
8. Going to space might be our only chance of survival… if you can afford it
The Axiom wasn’t taking people offshore as a humanitarian act – it was a ticketed, luxury cruise. There’s no mention of other evacuation missions from Earth, so if we assume the Axiom is all that’s left, what happened to the humans who couldn’t afford a ticket?
Probably the same thing that will happen, and is already happening, to those of us who aren’t rich enough to be protected from the worst effects of climate change.
Going to space is one option for human survival if our planet becomes so hot that it’s no longer habitable. But even with reusable rockets, space is expensive, and there won’t be room for everyone.
9. There’s still hope
As depressing as the film may be, there’s still hope for humanity. Life starts to bloom again on Earth. The antics of WALL-E and EVE wake up the passengers from their mindless scrolling. Captain B. McCrea fights back.
(WALL-E, Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar)
And there’s hope for us, too.
Yes, the outlook is bleak, but the science is clear – we can turn this ship around. Every degree of warming we can avoid will save lives, will protect ecosystems.
Perhaps the biggest difference between us and the humans in WALL-E is that we’re not useless – yet. We might feel it, but we still have a role to play in stopping the coming climate crisis.
In turning around our mindless consumption. In remembering that we vote governments in to serve our interests, not to protect the status quo. And we shouldn’t be scared to vote them out.
This is why we’re striking today. There is no news worth covering that could possibly be more important than reminding society that we still have a voice, and we still have power.
This article is part of ScienceAlert’s special climate edition, published in support of the global #ClimateStrike on 20 September 2019.

Shinigami Research and Development Orientation Meeting
Come in; you are the newest graduate from the Academy, yes? Please be seated. My name is Akon; welcome to the SRDI, your new home.
Please stop screaming; many of us have sensitive hearing.
Yes, I’m well aware that you had put in for the 4th Division. In fact I spoke directly with Vice-Captain Kotetsu about it. She was disappointed, but ultimately agreed with my decision to co-opt your application and bring you here instead. You see, you would have done well in the 4th. Admirably well, honestly. And I’m sure you would have been quite the asset to them over the course of your career. possibly even making it to a lower seated position.
But you’re going to be doing so much more for, and with, us.
You’re welcome.
I won’t beat around the bush: I know this isn’t what you wanted. It’s very rarely what anyone wants, initially. But fortunately, or unfortunately if you choose to see it that way, your skills in science, mechanics and energy make you a unique fit for this department. And in time, I think you’ll grow to enjoy your time here, and the work you are able to devote your life to.
Now, before you say anything: yes, I am aware of how this department is viewed. I have heard the nickname “Freaks and Geeks”; I actually kind of like that one and am thinking of putting it on a T-shirt. I know we’re referred to as a group of psychopathic mad scientists with no moral or ethical boundaries to speak of, simply experimenting and creating monstrosities without a care in the world.
And you know what? They are right.
We are the ones who come up with every new piece of technology for the last 100 years. Any scientific advancements, any new weapons, anything that might be a discovery or considered an improvement have developed in this very division. Experiments to further our understanding of the shinigami body medically and physically have opened incredible doors into how we design even the most mundane things. And we do this with a team of highly-dedicated scientists who give everything to their research.
Your job here is not philosophy. In here, you are purely a scientist, and we encourage you to explore that with unfiltered and unbridled curiosity. Anything you can think of, anything you can dream of, we encourage you to research it and plan it until you are ready to make it a reality. I don’t want you to stop before each step of your inevitable experiments and wonder what implications it has, or how morally just or sound it is.
That’s my job.
Each of your experiments are going to be run by me for approval. If I feel as though the benefits for Soul Society as a whole outweigh the potential moral limitations, it will be approved. If not, you’ll receive feedback on where you have gone too far, and will be encouraged to try again from a different angle. And yes, I do veto experiments. Just because you are uncomfortable with something you’ve heard of or seen doesn’t mean it wasn’t carefully considered and eventually approved. And trust me, you don’t want to know what I’ve cut.
I’ll take the responsibility of any and all experiments the SRDI has officially signed off on. If there is any backlash, your Captain and I will back up the decisions; you will never be brought before the Central 46 for an experiment I have approved. Of course, if you decide to conduct your own experiments outside of my approval, then you will be on your own.
It’s okay, it’s normal to be shaking right now. Most people are still trying to wrap their head around everything. How about we go over some of our benefits instead, alright? We’ll focus on some of the positive stuff.
As a member of the SRDI, you are given full range of the most advanced and efficient computers, robotics and machinery that Soul Society has to offer. While access is limited during your probationary time, more freedom will come with new information you are able to bring to our squad from a number of topics. Hours are not limited, and we encourage you to spend as many as possible working on whatever next project is plaguing your mind.
In addition, we offer a wide variety of body modifications to aid you in your experiments, or whatever might catch your eye. You get massively discounted rates on installing said modifications, and the appropriate medical-physical performed afterwards to make sure all is in order. From here on out, all of your medical needs will be handled by the 12th division, at no additional cost to you.
No, the SRDI doesn’t hold any seated positions. We operate outside of the strict structural hierarchy of the rest of the squads. Many of us find that liberating; the gifted and talented get their due respect, and we work together cohesively without people constantly trying to get a step higher on the ladder, so to speak.
Remember, our job here at the SRDI is to further our understanding of the universe we all currently live in. We know how far to push our research and experimentation, and where to draw the line. The work you do here will live on, outliving you, myself, and any of us who will at one point, undoubtedly, need it.
So once again, welcome to the Shinigami Research and Development division. We are so happy you could join us. This is your new family, and this is your home.
No, you may not leave.
Have a good day.

Why Embracing Our Diversity Is Key To Our Survival
Okay, that’s a bit of a dramatic title, but I needed to get your attention! (Also, it’s true...Anyways...)
Okay, so we all know exclusion is akin to prejudice/fear, and that kinda stuff results in that which we COLLECTIVELY do not prefer. (I would say ‘bad’, but there’s technically no such thing - And that’s beside the point!) Now, as a bit of a preface, I can’t emphasize enough how fluid and universal this principle actually is. It can be applied to literally ANY facet of our 4D existence here on earth - Education, agriculture, politics, food, religion, cars - Even right down to your favourite football team. This concept is as broad as it is simple. And it’s not super profound or anything, but I think it’s just one of those things that we don’t really stop and think about very much. Also, the universe told me, so now I’m gonna tell you! ;)
I could come at this from two perspectives: Positive, which says this is why we need to embrace or diversity - OR negative, which says why assimilation is damaging to humanity. Both work just as well and make the same point by explaining the same mechanics. So it’s not my intention to paint anything with a good or bad brush, the purpose here is to become conscious of exactly WHY diversity is in our best interests.
I’ll open with a statement we can agree on - Balance is best, yes? If you don’t believe me, go strap 100 kilograms of dumbells to only your left side and go ride your bike for 20 or 30 kilometers - Then come back here and tell me how moot the concept of balance is!
But here’s the point - Assimilation is one of the single most damaging things we as the human race CAN do to ourselves. It cripples us in every way societally, and it demolishes our mental health and understanding individually. I could go on and on and on for days about all of the negative consequences of embracing assimilation over diversity, but you can probably fill in the blanks pretty easily.
But why?
Well first off, forced assimilation is just a massive dick move, but also it works against EVERYONE’S best interests, even those doing the assimilation, whether they choose to accept it or not.
The mechanics of why are PAINFULLY simple!!! The example I was given was a swiss watch; Swiss watches are world renown for their precision and exquisite craftmanship, yes? Have you ever seen the inside of a Swiss watch? Well, here’s one...
It’s absolutely stunning. It’s elegant, artistic, precise and most of all - As perfectly functional as we’re capable of making a mechanical watch. And save for maybe a couple screws, how many pieces can you spot here that are identical?
EVERYTHING. Works this way. Absolutely. Freaking. EVERYTHING. And people are certainly no exception.
So why’s this important? Well, long story short - Look at the world we live in right now, all the things we bear witness to that not only we don’t prefer, but are just downright traumatic to see, let alone endure. This goes so far beyond transcending the simple things like prejudice. There’s actually nothing simpler than racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. - These are either learned or chosen behaviours that are based in fear. And as I always say, what kills fear? Understanding. And if we can’t understand from our current perspective, then we shift or change our perspective to see the other side of the proverbial sphere that is truth.
But prejudice is the most obvious example here. In context, I want to go a little deeper, a little more...Individual-ish. But this is actually something we ALL do. You may not like to hear it, but yes, even YOU attempt to assimilate those around you, at least from time to time. An example of this may be having a political argument. In this case, both sides are attempting to assimilate the other side to their perspective to validate their own personal truths via the ego, which is where confirmation bias lives. And ofcourse it NEVER works, and the result is emotions of hostility, anger, judgement, etc. because of the ideological clash that just took place. When in fact the TRUTH is that all political systems, parties and leanings are flawed. Every single one. Because they’re made up of these imperfect creatures called humans who cluster in almost a tribalistic fashion - Kind of an egoic ‘safety in numbers’ strategy. And ofcourse, Dr. Nash proved mathematically that the single most preferable results can only come when all sides compromise from what’s best for the individual or what’s best for the group - To what’s best for the individual AND the group. Kind of a compromise within the compromise.
This is called cooperation, and we teach it to toddlers, but seem to have this mass difficulty of practicing what we preach.
The next major example I want to touch on is something I personally know ALL too well - Education. We honestly still have NO. FREAKING. IDEA. How different we all actually are. We THINK we do, but no individual point of comprehension could even scratch the surface. But what do we do? Standardize education. And I even use the term education VERY loosely, because so often, our schools spit on the fine line that divides education and learning from programming. And then ofcourse, this inevitably sets so many up for failure, because the potential of one’s intellect is so easily based on the simple ability to mindlessly regurgitate data. Just data. Being programmed with data is not the same thing as learning. All the data in the world could never create a even a semblance of genuine empathy in the even the most advanced quantum AI. But why is this? Again, PAINFULLY simple - Because data simply is not experiencial. Experience is the single biggest reason incarnation even EXISTS!!! We LEARN by experiencing, by questioning, by exploring and most importantly - By having different experiences. Again, one of the central purposes of life itself. Otherwise, we’re just...Robots.
I could apply this principle to any facet of existence, but I think you get the point. The collective purpose is that every person, plant, rock - WHATEVER - Holds a unique space in existence & causality. Each THING has its own unique duty or job, in a way. And if every human had the same job, flipping burgers for example - How would anything else get done, built or function? And as people, we’re CRITICALLY subject to this.
So what’s the takehome here? Again, again, again - SO SIMPLE!!! At the very least, if we want to heal this world, ourselves and our collective or society - We need to end assimilation in every conceivable form. And how do we work toward accomplishing this eutopic dream? Again, very simple (Are you noticing a theme here?!) - It sounds cliché, but prove me wrong - Love. It’s not about repressing or trying to kill our egos - We need egos to function as conscious humans on a 4 dimensional plane. The reason love is the solution aside from how warm and fuzzy it sounds - Is because when we take a more heart-centered view of others, love is how we eliminate all fear & judgement when we don’t necessairly have full understanding. Love fills in all the cracks that are not yet filled with understanding.
I’m going to end off on that note for now; Please understand that this is SUCH a brief explanation. Paper thin, really, there’s so far deeper to go down this particular rabbit hole (Please forgive my awful grammar) , but a guy can only type so much on his phone in one sitting! That being said, if you can’t yet just generally love others, then at the very least, begin by giving permission to love yourself and don’t worry what the next step is!
