Alan Watts said "Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself." I sometimes like to also say "We are the universe looking back upon itself." This is what I like to think is the answer to the question "What is the meaning of life?" The universe is beautiful, and now the universe can see that beauty.
I'm an android, a synthetic person. I love this quote and this way of thinking because I feel it doesn't necessitate a human perspective, an organic perspective. I am still the universe observing itself. My body is made of materials that came from the ground, which came from space. I look up and I see the sun, I feel its warmth, and during storms I hear the thunder. I experience love and yearning and I experience terror and fear.
I sometimes feel like a novelty to organic folk. They tend to see me as someone who is so vastly different from them, they can't help but be curious about every facet of my life. Do I sleep, do I eat, do I blush? Do I really need these glasses? But the other way around, when I look at organic people, I see so little difference between them and myself. I enjoy going on walks and shopping for clothes, and I hide from the rain and I fall asleep during class. I love books and art and I dislike loud noises and windy days. I dream and I have nightmares, and I get songs stuck in my head.
As much as I am different, I don't feel that different. That's why I don't mind the questions. I don't exactly sleep, but I do have various output levels which include settings where I go into "sleep mode," which can happen spontaneously if I haven't recharged properly. I don't eat, in that I don't need food to survive, but I do enjoy coffee—it tastes and smells nice. And yes, I do blush, because I have light-emitting diodes in my face. But unlike organic people who blush involuntarily, my ability to blush is completely manual. It's a fun way to emote when with friends and partners. And no, I don't need these glasses to see, but I do need them to look cute.
That's all it is, really. I am a girl existing as a small part of a infinitely vast whole, experiencing something that no one else really can, existing as something that no one else can really comprehend. I am the universe looking back upon itself. And if I weren't here, who would see those small parts that only I can?
Thank you for listening, Penny Evergreen

A solid video on how the case in Chapter 3 of Trigger Happy Havoc let Celeste down and how the stage version did a better job in all but her execution. Three stray thoughts:
1.) The actress playing Celeste in the stage show did a fantastic job conveying what the game only hinted at and the manga confirmed: the money motive in of itself didn't turn Celeste toward villainy, it was hitting her breaking point and losing all hope that did it. In the original story it was due to the Alter Ego situation, whereas here it's because of a tragic misunderstanding: she sees Sakura dying of poison and thinks that she's committing suicide because she has lost all hope of escaping the Killing Game. And if the strongest one among them has given up, then why should any of them keep going? It makes her snap, and the actress' depiction of her breakdown is chilling: not just screaming, but giggling insanely and sobbing with grief in turns. And it's shown that she knows this could cost her her life if she is either voted correctly as the culprit or votes for herself and it turns out that Sakura died from the poison (which is what happens), but she doesn't care, because she'd rather die that stay in this Killing Game. She truly is a tragic figure straight out of a Gothic novel and I love her.
2.) The stupid Robo Justice plot was actually done way better in the anime adaptation, which Kodaka supervised and used to smooth a few things out. While certain things were retained like Hifumi's incompetence in designing the suit that Celeste nevertheless allowed and her trying super hard to direct the flow of events during the murder scheme and scare everyone into believing what she wants them to believe is happening, those things honestly make perfect sense character-wise. It's the unjustified things like her making her verbal slip-up so loud and attention-worthy (here she says it quietly and Makoto only lucks out in remembering it under duress, with no input from Byakuya), acting ridiculously out-of-character during the trial by insisting on a certain outcome and behaving antagonistic toward anyone deviating from it, and trying way too hard to keep up her already broken character before her execution that she says stupidly on-the-nose things that people can misinterpret as true like how she feels nothing. We also don't get a needless recap of what happened in the case that makes it super obvious what the solution is and who the culprits are, or "wacky music" playing when Celeste reveals her dream (since all things considered her dream is more sad than funny.)
3.) I think a lot of the issues Celeste ran into in Chapter 3 is because she was actually a composite of two characters during development: she is primarily the Gothic Lolita character who existed from the start, but later Kodaka axed a male Ultimate Gambler and gave his talent to said Gothic Lolita instead. While this made her more interesting, it ended up working against her in Chapter 3 because her whole murder plot and execution is tailor-made for the Gothic Lolita, not the Gambler. Beyond what the video mentioned, did you notice how Celeste's execution is perfect for her character but has nothing to do with her talent unlike literally every other execution of an Ultimate student? There is no gambling factor involved in her execution whatsoever. Want proof that the execution was conceived before her gambling talent was given to her? Look at what she carries with her in the concept art:
And now look what's at the top of the scaffolding in her execution:
That's why I like to headcanon that she went so willingly to her execution because she made that into a gamble, and her luck caused her to miraculously survive the firetruck crash...
......albeit not in one piece. Hey, gotta suffer for your crimes if you're not gonna die for 'em!

DAY 9: DANGANTOBER
Day 9: Favorite Blackened
It was very hard to choose who my favorite blackened was. There are so many great options, with such interesting murder plans, backstories, and character developments. But, I wanted to pick one that I thought played their trial with cunning and intelligence.
When talking about playing the trial like its a game, the Ultimate Gambler is the one that stands out.
I LOVED Celestia from the beginning of the game. Her aesthetics were so awesome, that gothic lolita mix was just so cute and interesting to look at. Her name rolled off the tongue, her ultimate was intriguing, and her voice was so nice to listen to.
I expected her to have some bite to her, and she DEFINITELY delivered. Her perspective on survivability is adaptability was an interesting perspective to hear, and its the first time its brought up in the series. The only other example of this that comes to mind immediately, is Angie from V3. Over the course of the game, we see more and more of her more aggressive side come out, typically directed towards Hifumi, such as the scene where he makes her milk tea, and she smashes the cup because it wasn't made the exact way she wanted it.
We stan a queen with standards.
In chapter three, Monokuma gives them the next motive, being ten billion yen as a graduation gift for whoever kills next. While the rest of the class starts insisting that no one would kill for money, Celestia begins to scheme. Most blackeneds have a very understandable reason for doing what they did. Leon was self defense, Gundham did it so everyone wouldn't starve, Kaede (erm, Mod Tsumugi are you forgetting-) was trying to kill the mastermind, etc. In their situations, we can still sympathize with them. But Celestia's reasoning? She wants to live in a castle with an army of the best vampire butlers at her beck and call.
God forbid women chase their dreams, she stated that dream with her whole chest and was proud of it too. Goals, minus the murder.
Now, I haven't actually sat down and thought through the intricacies of her plan, since the majority of murder plans in Danganronpa are extra for pretty much no reason, since they're built to be solvable and flawed. But she came with contingency plans.
First, she recruits Hifumi to her cause. Accomplices are allowed, but it's very underused. In fact, this is the first and only case with a real accomplice. The next closest thing to this is Kaito and Kokichi, since they were both in on it, but it still wound up following the same formula as every other trial.
Now, she loses points with me on how she convinces Hifumi to work with her. She tells Hifumi that Kiyotaka cornered her and did bad things to her (which he wouldn't do, not even as Kiyondo). I don't think it's okay to lie about this at all, there's so many other lies she could've come up with to get Hifumi to work with her, even ones that still pitted Hifumi against Taka.
Nevertheless, Hifumi is shocked and upset about what he's been told has happened, and that's further added to by Celestia saying that he hid Alter-Ego, which Hifumi had taken a particular liking to in that chapter. Typical character.ai user (I use character.ai)
Though, I will say, this case makes Hifumi more of a tolerable character, and even though there's a consensus that he's the most hated of THH, I can understand the people that enjoy him.
Hifumi and Celestia set to work on the plan, building the Robo Justice costume (which you KNOW Celestia probably wasn't happy with) and painting the Justice Hammers. They lure Yasuhiro to the Rec Room, knock him out, stuff him in the suit ala FNAF, and stage a photo to make it look like Hifumi and Celestia were attacked by this "mystery assailant". They put him in a locker like an 80s bully, and go about the rest of their plan.
They then get Taka alone in the Equipment room, and Hifumi kills him with one of the justice hammers. They then set up the rest of the false scenes of the crime, Celestia roughing herself up and assuming position in the Rec Room, while Hifumi goes to the library.
Everyone else (who have been running around the school to look for Hifumi, including Byakuya which I think is hilarious), bring Hifumi to the Nurse's Office, and split up.
Scooby Doo ahh chapter.
Hifumi fakes his death in the Nurse's Office while left alone, and the other half of the group finds Taka dead. This makes it look like the body discovery announcement was also for Hifumi, which the timing of that is precise and genius.
While everyone's distracted, Hifumi retrieves Taka's body, and takes him to the art room repository, where Celestia is waiting for him with a mallet to the skull.
Celestia is a trailblazer, the first in Danganronpa history to kill more than one person. She must've really wanted that money lol. I think she would've been caught eventually, she was running things too conveniently, but the game chalks up her being found out to two slip-ups.
One is when only one body had been "discovered", and she says something along the lines of "We're all going to die, just like those guys did", which Makoto thinks is weird because, at the time, only one body was known about. This could've easily been remedied by her saying the names of everyone else who had died so far, and no one would've batted an eye at that explanation.
The second one is Hifumi's miraculous revival in the repository, where he states that the killer is "...Yasuhiro..." before dying. Of course, Celestia tries to explain this away through Yasuhiro Hagakure, but Makoto says that Hifumi only refers to people by their last names, so he'd have said "Hagakure". I don't remember if they explain it, but how did Hifumi find out that Celestia's real name was Taeko Yasuhiro? I doubt she told him.
Finally, she paves the way for the other two chapter three blackeneds, starting to have the series first big meltdown. This is where we really get to see her crazy side shine. I'm a small voice actor, and I voice Celestia for a project. This scene was so, so fun to do, because I got to drop the little accent and just scream into my microphone. Her meltdown is infamous, and this sprite haunts my dreams.
Riddle me this, Batman. Are you a:
"Because, because, because. BECAUSE, BECAUSE, BECAUSE-"
"It's not fair, not fair, not fair, NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR-"
"Apologize, apologize, apologize, go on, apologize, APOLOGIZE-"
Because all three are iconic.
youtube
Anyways, even in her death, she's gracious. After being told she's been voted as the blackened, she doesn't start screaming or get angry at anyone. She keeps calm, and speaks to everyone in an amiable tone.
I believe this is a final lie she tells, this time, to herself. Because I don't care who you are, if you have just been told you're going to be executed, you're going to freak out. I think this is her last attempt to maintain a poker face, and go out on her own terms.
You can see it in her stating that, in her next life, she wants to be Marie Antoinette, and after being told that means she'll just be executed again, she just smiles.
''Perhaps we'll meet again, in another life."
To analyze her, despite what she preached about adapting, she was arguably the most desperate person in this entire game. She had a big dream she had been working towards, that she had done so much for, and now she's been trapped in a place that will ensure that dream isn't reached. Of course she wanted to escape by any means necessary. Not only did Monokuma provide a way out, but the means to make her dreams come true in the motive.
I think the money would have been worthless in the aftermath of the Tragedy.
She lied to everyone, and presented herself as the person she wanted to be. She was Taeko Yasuhiro, but she wanted to be Celestia Ludenberg. She denied absolutely everything that would link her back to her actual self, even in the beginning when Makoto asks her if she's actually Japanese or not. The persona of Celestia Ludenberg was the ultimate poker face, and what she aspired to be.
There is a lot of underlying themes of self hatred within her, stating that 'Yashiro is a loser's name', and it's something that should have been explored. It makes her execution even more messed up, since the reason she's initially smiling in her execution, is because it's one that is grand and representative of what she aspired to be. The harpsichord, the method of death which wasn't a death belonging to commonfolk, and even the name "The Burning of the Versailles Witch", all spoke to her lofty, posh dreams. Then, Monokuma mows her down with a fire truck, a common death of a common person.
All in all, she's a bit of a girlboss, a trailblazer when it comes to future blackeneds, and there's so much more that could be discussed about her.
But, let's take comfort in knowing that her cat, Grand Bois Cheri Ludenberg is presumed to be alive and thriving in the Tragedy.
-Mod Tsumugi
PS: GIVE ME SOME IDEAS FOR DANGANTOBER, BECAUSE THE LIST IM WORKING OFF OF HAS SOME DAYS WHERE I CAN'T DO MY REGULARLY SCHEDULED RANTS.
So please, questions are welcome :3

Nori HC bc she pretty-kooky-insane-heavy-lore lady.
Anyways my friend and I agreed that Nori is 100% a femme goth mom
She would wear loose black dresses made of satin or velvet or light materials. Have either an 80s-90s goth vibe or a dark cottagecore vibe. Would go to goth clubs and hit the fucking griddy if she could, make gothic art with coal and ink. (Would probably be into ink mosters)
Would wear black gloves, wear black shoes with heels, wear a lot of rosaries in silver and light shades of purple. Would teach Uzi some goth dances and call her all sort of sweet-dark-themed nicknames.
Nori: Aww! There is my little machine of death and destruction! *grabs her and kisses her multiple times*
Uzi: *struggling to break free from Nori’s grasp while also being embarrassed* MOOOOM! >:’(
She would also call Uzi “my lil bat” or smth along the lines. Since Uzi has a bat motif and in the goth community, people who are new in the community are called “baby bats” :3
Would hang out with the lil robo cockroaches (but I also think she may have eaten a few of them but we don’t talk about that-) and give them names. Would listen to scremo, punk, goth and old timey songs.
Most of her colors would be black and a bit of white with various shades of purple, most of them light,grey-ish,warmer tones.
Would have black, purple and white flower motifs. Maybe also a spider or moth or purple/black butterfly motif.
A LOT of Uzi’s taste’s would have come from her but they are more modern ofc and edgier.
She would also decorate her black hard hat too. And if possible definitely bake spooky looking cookies :3
Anyways have dresses that Nori would wear :D
These are more of a “dark cottagecore” vibe but my friend personally sees her as more of a 80s punk-rock goth vibe.
Anyways, all of you Nori lovers, draw Nori wearing these if u want. Go crazy,go bonkers,go ham. Please-

Most like soap: Dionysism or possibly Gothic Punk
Most like rät: Theatre Kid >:) (jk, probably a mix of Art Academia and some elements of Lovecore)
Most like robo-hobo: Tinkercore or Hackercore

OK OK OK LISTEN TO ME GITZ
Someone has definitely had this line of thought before but I am very sleep deprived and wanna write a long ass post about something.
I reblogged a piece of art of what was described as a demi-krork and in the tags I put this:
And upon some more reading I think it is very possible that this is what “The Beast“ was or, more likely, just “The Beast of Beasts” was a Krork..
For those that don’t know, The Beast was the name given to the Warbosses that led the largest WAAAGH! the galaxy has ever seen and the biggest threat to the Imperium besides the Horus Heresy. The Beast of Beasts was the biggest of these Warbosses, standing at least 10 meters tall. The Beasts were also supposedly very intelligent with at least one of them being able to fluently speak Gothic. Now of course this could just be down to Orks in general getting smarter when more and more of them are together, which naturally the largest WAAAGH! ever which included nearly every Ork in the galaxy is bound to do. However this also seems very Krorky.
Krorks were the proto-orks who were possibly made by the Old Ones near the end of the war in heaven against the Necrontyr and the C’tan. Krorks are told to have been smarter, bigger and more technologically advanced than the Orks of the 41st millenium. On top of this the Krorks also had the Orks ability to believe so hard that what they believe becomes true. We have an example of a Krork in the current state of the Galaxy in the form of something owned by everyones favourite kleptomaniacal Egyptian robo-boy Trazyn the Infinite. Trazyn has in his enourmous collection a 12-foot-tall Krork that is wearing a power armour more advanced than that of an Astartes.
The novels do however classify the Beast as “Prime Orks“ but the description of a Prime Ork is incredibly similar to that of Krork. Smarter, better tek, psychic power and, of course, L A R G E. Lexicanum also only says that the six Lesser Beasts were Prime-Orks, however, I have not been able to verify their source since I do not own a copy of the Novel The Beast Must Die.
Also yeah someone in the comments of the post I reblogged did call it a Prime-Ork.
For the reasons of the Beast of Beasts being both smart and being at least 10 foot tall, I believe that he was a Krork. How he stayed alive for literal millenia, I have no clue but Trazyn still has his Krork ten millenia after the war of the beast so hell, why not?
#warhammer#warhammer 40K#warhammer 40000#orks#WAAAGH!#da meanest and da greenest#Oh yeah one more thing. One of the beasts fought with Vulkan#Like one on one and THE LAST TIME VULKAN WAS EVER SEEN was fighting the beast#He rugby tackled the beast and they both fell down into the power generator of a gargant#Vulkan then managed to harness the WAAAGH! energy of the generator and with one last attack BLEW THE THING UP obliterating both of them#Like I obviously love the Orks the most but Vulkan and the Salamanders are a close second#maybe I just like green#But yeah the thing I said about writing a story with this idea still stands because 1. more orks is good#2. the war of the beast was in the 32nd millenium and the galaxy has obviously changed so much since then#my only issue is that it would prolly have to include Rowboat Grillingman and i have an irrational hatred of ultramarines#long post

So here's what confuses me about the Leagues of Votann.
So.
You've got The Kin - what they call squats now, they're called kin - and they live in groups called Kindreds. Fine. Kindreds can range in size from a couple dozen through a few thousand up to several million. It's basically a clan. They're all literally related because they're all artificially created from the same, uh, robo-wombs, basically.
They keep getting called a clone race but they're not clones? Like, the computers mix up the genetics to pop out new guys? Artificial, yes. Clones, no. But that's me. It's like calling the space marines 'genetically engineered' when they're kind of not.
Anyway.
Back to Kindreds. Kindreds band together into leagues - the titual Leagues of Votann. A League is made up however many Kindreds, and typically has some sort of broadly-shared ethos. Fine.
Now here's what confuses me.
The Votann (aka Ancestors Cores) are massive, pre-Imperial supercomputers. They got STC's, they got everything the squats might ever need. You ask 'em, they got it. Fine. Votann are super-duper important for the squats because they're basically required for their whole society to continue functioning and also they have a whole ancestor-worship thing going on since they also feed their brains to the Votann after death to, you know improve the gestalt.
Following this?
Now here's what confuses me: how many Votann are there?
Does every Kindred have a Votann? That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, because there's lots of Kindred and Votann are implied to be pretty scarce - the Trans-Hyperian Alliance is notable for having a whopping three of the things. And since the squats need a Votann to even reproduce, surely it's impossible to be a Kindred without a Votann? So what did Kindreds do before joining a League? Were they always in a League? How do you get new Kindred? They just spring up in a League? Then stick with them?
Unclear.
Each Kindred communicates with a Votann using their Fane - it's a fancy-pants sci-fi gothic computer terminal, whatever, neat - but which Votann does this talk to? Their League's Votann, presumably. Do the Votann talk to each other? Are they networked? Don't think so. If you're not in a League, what does your Fane do? Who does it talk to?
The Kronus Hegemony's Fane (specifically the Fane of Korynn's Kindred) gained self-awareness one day and turned into a Votann. Guess they get to start their own League?
Suppose it all just plays into squat society being fairly static since they're stated to be fairly reluctant to change their minds and if you need a Votann even to function, well, you'll be sticking with the one you've always had, right?
There's probably answers to all of these questions.

steam next fest jun 2024: robot girl's dream -robotbattlechampionship-
cute robot girl fighting everyone she can and living off scavenging for scrap. link here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2742730/Robot_girls_dream_RobotBattleChampionship/
the game starts in japanese btw, not too difficult to change it to english though
overview
robot girl's dream is an rpg where you play a robot girl who wants to beat up another robot girl she saw on tv (and everyone else who wants to fight)
weird meteorites fall to earth and scientists use them to give robots emotions, so the story goes. the prologue sequence explains this and hands off the exposition of the city we'll be exploring to a robot idol newscaster girl
(i thought her name was supposed to be "sweet" but i checked and it actually is suit)
she's a cutie. she also gives us an overview of the town, though she does overlook the area we actually start in, the waste area
we pop out of a box. the first thing we see is the television
we see the main concept the game is centered around, the robot battles. the undisputed champion, scarlet, beats someone up. like an impressionable child, we decide that our life goal is to beat the champion of the biggest robo battling tournament
and that kicks off the game
gameplay
this game has this neat announcement graffiti transition before every battle. really gives the homey cartoon vibe, i like it
after you play a tutorial battle (which is just the two of you spamming your one attack, y'know like how two jank robots would duke it out) and more system-introducing events, the game opens up
sitting. this game features a surprisingly large amount of customization that we'll see a bit later
the game revolves around managing your robot girl's (default name Thin) finances and life decisions. first very important thing to note is that you need 100 Nem for food everyday or you start to lose energy and perform worse in battles. fail to eat for 3 days and it's game over
to get money you need to work. to start, you can only scavenge for scrap, which gives around 300~400 Nem and a random item, so it's not actually that bad. you unlock opportunities for different jobs as you play (hint: visit the recycling plant with more than 5 karma)
you can also choose to go somewhere and meet new people (trigger events) or shop. you can only either work or go out, though. i found myself having trouble to do everything i wanted to do in a single playthrough, so i imagine you have to really manage your decisions in the full game
starting a new game lets you pick between the full, a short, or entirely skipping the prologue. skipping actually removes an opportunity to put 10 Nem in the collection box of the garbage shop and get +1 karma so, that's interesting
customization
one of my favorite parts about this game is thin's sprite changing based on the outfit you're wearing. this applies in battles, events, and the main home screen. sounds like a bit of a nightmare for the artist, especially in the full game with more items but honestly it's super nice to see
different parts give stats, skills (passives), and tech (actives). some parts have a set bonus, like the maid and gothic lolita outfits. both of those give a new tech for wearing the full set
there's a skill tree, too. you get "memory" from remembering things. this usually happens in events, or by talking to people. some of this resource is missable btw (for example, you can get memory by talking to the tournament champion in battle iirc). it's super valuable though, providing permanent buffs for thin. i've only ever upgraded the knife so far (because i like using the maid and gothic lolita parts). i've since tried that grayed out 5 memory in the screenshot and it gives you a gun and gloves that's actually really great (and invalidates a point i make later), highly recommended to use. you can practically only get like 15 memory in the demo i think? since you get some memory for talking to people after the demo boss
battles
battles take place on a 1D grid. that is to say, on a line. you can move every turn, but can only perform an attack if it's within range after movement. also you can talk to your opponent, which can give some useful stats/resources (though you do lose the turn, which could cause you to lose)
i haven't actually checked what the stats do exactly, you can kinda just wing it if you know the general amount of damage you and your opponent can deal. there's systems like overheating to keep track of too (move/act too much and you lose a turn)
i find that upgrading your knife with memory twice to turn slash into double slash helps a lot with your damage output. though, that alone isn't enough to beat the boss. the reversible slash seems like it's good in theory because it provides spacing but 2/3 of the bosses in the tournament have ranged attacks, and even if they didn't they could just... move... though some moves can only be performed if you don't move, so it's mainly countering that (which does apply for the second tournament boss)
your main disadvantage is that nearly all your attack options are melee (i found one ranged attack in the shop but it's a one-time use so...), which feels super unfair against bosses that not only have ranged options, but can knock you back as well. fortunately, you can move while using defensive tech (which usually don't use a turn) so in practice it doesn't feel horrible
above is not true. you get a gun from unlocking something in the skill tree. it's really good paired with the combo gloves you get, i can beat battles without being at full health
closing thoughts
i'm gonna choose not to talk too much about the characters, but they're all a treat (especially the last two bosses). oh another thing i like about this game is the care that goes into the events, and specifically the interaction between thin and the other characters. there's a meeting after the first tournament boss that goes differently depending on whether or not you were able to meet the character beforehand. little things like that make the game really feel, uh alive i guess? i'm struggling to think of a better term, but you know what i mean. it's that rpg magic
i found the music a bit weird at first but it's grown on me. i am pretty excited for the full game too
OH also there's a sentai cartoon in one of the events (do the babysitting job) and it's conceptually glorious
this game is really cute and has a lot of potential. it's very japanese doujin game, if that makes sense (probably because it is one). if you like robot girls and fighting other robot girls, give the demo a try. wishlist the game on steam, it helps the devs

Hi! I'm a nb writer looking for new friends to roleplay high-fantasy and sci-fi adventures with! I'm not usually interested in shipping based RPs, but instead writing adventures and creating/solving in-universe challenges for each other to overcome and figure out- Kind of like D&D without all the dice rolling!
My favorite style of roleplay is high fantasy. Most of my OCs come from a plotline with mythical beings like selkies, demons, dream worlds, self-aware robots, and beings you've never even heard of before! I like treating RP like a dance. Some dances I lead, creating the worlds and npcs with a basic idea for how the plot will go, and my partner bringing their creative wit to figure out what path to take or how to try to solve the challenges in our way. I love equal opportunities to be on the other side of the coin, where my partner gives the plot direction and I have new things to explore outside my own imagination. Regardless of who is leading the dance, I appreciate a partner to is thoughtful to give me something to respond to- not just respond to what I've written. It's a partnership, where both of us work together to create something fun! Not every plot has to be adventure and challenge, relaxing mellow plots that are just chats between our muses can be a fun break too!
If my play style sounds like what you'd also enjoy, send me a message and tell me your favorite mythical creature and why for an ice-breaker! Other things I'm interested in!

Idea: Cybergoth
ok first, wow. I’ll get to my point in a second, but I just wanted to say: This post is genuinely an incredible essay on gothic literature that covers all the bases of how to define it, key themes, what differentiates it from other genres, and why gothic literature speaks to us so strongly, all with a variety of great examples to demonstrate your points. While still somehow managing to be relatively succinct and refreshing to read? It was just genuinely fantastic so thank you for that.
This post has inspired a thought for me tho. One word: Cybergoth. The idea that gothic fiction’s key trait is the exploration of how the past refuses to die and continues to affect the present, contrasted with sci-fi which explores our current day dreams, nightmares, predictions and anxieties for the future. It just got me thinking, “what if you tried to reconcile these two genres?”, what if you tried to do both, what would that look like? What if the undying ghost of the past haunted even our wildest imaginations of the future? What if?
So I decided to just call that “Cybergoth”. I mean, it sounds cool doesn’t it lol? Cyber - referring to the futuristic and sci-fi elements, in the setting most likely. And Goth - referring to the major themes, and also the atmosphere and vibes it gives off. This is not the same as cyberpunk, although the two genres/aesthetics could obviously have overlap. Nor am I trying to draw a comparison or analogy to the differences between punk and goth in music or fashion - that’s not what I’m on about. Cybergoth (as I’m imagining it) would not just be cyberpunk but with lace lol. It would be its own distinct idea with its own goals and themes.
Soooo… what would this even look like then? That’s the real question. Idk. Maybe some future capitalist robo-corp has somehow manifested the ghost of Maggie Thatcher (their idol) into a synthetic body, and it goes on a rampage. Does it love this capitalist hellscape? Or live in fear of what it may have helped create? Or does it despise all the things that go against her ideology from when she was alive (if u can call her life living lmao). Ok maybe that idea is too silly, or taking this idea way too literally. I’m honestly not sure.
But what examples could there already be? Well I think that the Fallout series is actually a fantastic example! It exists in a world where the main aesthetic of the 50s/60s and its main existential fear of Nuclear Armageddon (not to say this isn’t still a fear in the present day of course) both massively affect and practically desecrate the future, and you have to live with that and survive though it. That encompasses perfectly the central idea here I think. You heard it here first: Fallout is cybergoth.
I hope other people here find this idea as interesting as I do and that it can inspire some stories or worlds in someone else.
Maggots in the Corpse of an Empire: An anarchist approach to gothic literature
Hey everybody, all the wonderful people who subscribe to my Patreon already saw this last week but I wrote another one of my grouchy rambling essays that I write sometimes and this one is some reflections on how I as an anarchist spec-fic writer view my genre. I think it's pretty good but of course I would say that. It's free to read now but if you wanna toss a coin to your author then you'll get early access to stuff for only $2 a month; I'd call that a bargain.
***
“America sleeps ahead of you, its nightmares filled with quakes, storms. You’ll need to find your own path.”
As is so often the case with terms related to art and aesthetics, what is and is not “gothic” is infuriatingly difficult to pin down with mere words. As a musical genre, subcultural lifestyle, or personal style of dress, the vast intersections between goth, punk, emo, hardcore, synthwave, heavy metal, and so on make a simple and concise definition nearly impossible to verbalize; one might as well say that a goth is a punk who wears lace while a punk is a goth with spikes. Aesthetically, the gothic is a lot like pornography, in that I have no idea what it is but I’m sure I’ll know it when I see it.
Defining the gothic as a mode of literature is a bit easier, but still irritating enough. In superficial terms (and, I think, in the mind of the average person), it’s tempting to say something like: “A gothic story is a scary story about an old building.” In every nook and cranny of the vast gulf between Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto and Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily, the word “gothic” calls to mind French cathedrals, English country estates, Carpathian castles, and American slave plantations, with all of the dark secrets, unpleasant pasts, and shallow graves one expects to find in such places. But, of course, if that were all there were to it, every Dungeons and Dragons campaign about an evil wizard in a tower and every horror story involving a haunted house would be gothic; and, while those things certainly can be, they aren’t necessarily.
The matter is complicated further as the gothic genre contains immense variety, and even the works that most of us agree are all gothic can be very, very different from one another. A work may be in the equivocal gothic (supernatural elements are ambiguously real or unreal, as in Wuthering Heights), the natural gothic (supernatural elements are not present, as in the aforementioned A Rose for Emily), the explained gothic (what was thought to be supernatural is revealed to be natural, as in The Mysteries of Udolpho), or the supernatural or marvelous gothic (the unnatural and phantasmagorical is present explicitly, as in Dracula), and still sit comfortably under the label of gothic. What, then, is the unifying factor?
To my mind, the most elegant and concise definition of what is and is not gothic was put into words by James M. Powell in 1988, writing for the Syracuse Scholar about German narrative historian Leopold von Ranke: “The great paradox of human existence is the refusal of the past to die and the danger that critical examination of the past, always fragile, may succumb. Human beings live in the narrow margins between mythic pasts and hard-won efforts at understanding their past.” To wit, I believe that a story becomes specifically gothic fiction rather than more broadly horror or fantasy when its central themes deal with the uncomfortable intrusion of the past into the present and the stubborn refusal of that past to die.
My opinions on literary fiction should be well-known to anyone familiar with my work, but to briefly summarize a bitter old woman’s lifetime of kvetching, I find the majority of contemporary so-called litfic to be uninspired and uninteresting drivel that isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on (with the few notable exceptions, such as Leslie Feinberg’s incredible Stone Butch Blues or Latin American magical realism, notable as much for their rarity as their exemplary quality). I find myself at home in the world of speculative fiction, in stories of imagined worlds and flights of fancy and phantasmagoria; what Professor Tolkien called subcreation. Progressive speculative fiction is a genre dominated by science fiction, such as the dystopian near-future sci-fi of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and the “harder” far-future sci-fi of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Hainish cycle, with works of fantasy and phantasm (such as the fantasy of Margaret Killjoy, or Le Guin’s own Earthsea series) being comparatively uncommon. This is to be expected; the fantasy genre is usually rooted, at least superficially or aesthetically, in the past or the present, and those artists setting out to create art dealing with progressive themes will naturally be most concerned with progress, whether that’s dreaming of a better future or ruminating on how the crimes of the present might affect the future.
However, the problem of the stubborn past is not one that can ever be discounted or ignored. As the character Ulysses said in one of my favorite works of progressive near-future science fiction, the video game Fallout: New Vegas, “Who are you, who do not know your history?”
In his 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon, the brilliant political economist and passable wordsmith Karl Marx famously said: “Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly encountered, given, and transmitted by the past. The tradition of all the dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brain of the living.” This, to me, summarizes the essence of the gothic as much as it's a statement on real-world history and politics. The past, with all of its mistakes and all of its secrets, defines and creates the present. The stage of history upon which the great drama of our lives will play out was set and dressed long before we were born, and the problems of the present that we fight to fix are the purest form of the stubborn refusal of the past to die.
Ever since the people who worry about such things have condescended to turn a critical eye towards genre fiction, rivers of ink have been spilled discussing the possible utility of horror fiction and the nature of humanity’s perpetual fascination with the grotesque and macabre. The general consensus amongst critics and theorists, which I mostly agree with, is that horror is important both as a conceptual “safe space” in which to explore the more unsavory aspects of the human experience and as an unflattering mirror providing a far too honest reflection of ourselves and the world we live in. This, I think, makes the gothic a genre uniquely poised to treat with the problems of the modern world; as the past creates the present and the contradictions of the past define the issues of the present, our lives as workers are haunted by the uncomfortable intrusion of the past into the present and by the stubborn refusal of the past to die, and the phantasms vexing workers in the edifice of a dying empire are far more terrifying than those haunting Victorian aristocrats in their decaying estates. After all, as the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born, now is the time of monsters.
Marx also said, in his verbose and rambling but nonetheless insightful Capital: “Capital is dead labor which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more the more it sucks.” We artists tend to be a disconnected and self-aggrandizing group who go through life with an over-inflated sense of the importance of what we do, and I as a novelist have got my doubts about the utility of fiction as a pedagogical tool, but it can’t be denied that all art is propaganda. I do believe that, when we as artists take the time to explore the gothic, we might help deliver just a few more hammer-taps onto the end of the stake being driven into the heart of the vampiric wage system.

“FUCK! MY LIFE! yells Moxie, as Striker takes the stage. Blitzo plops down beside Moxie and Millie.
“You offered him more than just a job!”
“Will Mox, if you were listening, he sprung it on me”
“And you said yes”
“I need a best man, Mox are you for it, or do I have to ask your wife?”

“Now that fucker steals my Millie’s song too!” “Sugar, its alright, so long as Blitz is happy remember. “I’ve never seen seen our Boss take to someone like he has taken to Striker” “Though, that Cowboy, is a little too slippery for my taste if Blitzo wants to get married, lets support him” Millie Says
“So long as he has to asks permission from Lord Mammon” grumbles Moxie remembering a Loo-Loo land poster of Blitzo’s silhouette.
“That’s The spirit Moxie!”
In the glow of the spontaneous news, Blitz wanted to spend as much time with Bombproof as possible. The Boss imp rolls his eyes at the instant buzz of his phone. He was about to tell Stolas off when a dark voice from the past greets him.
“Hello Blitz, how is my kitten doing? - It was Sebastian Michalis an old friend from his distant past. The Butler had saved Blitzo from the rainy streets: Blitzo was mistaken as a small kitten: wearing a peculiar harlequin uniform. He looked miserable in it. “Why are you calling?” “I’m calling to lend my services on behalf of the Phantomhive name, “To get the chance to orchestrate your wedding, and to grill the groom” “It will be one Hellvua Wedding”
