Having a doctorate in history has led you to places you never thought possible. One of those places ended up being the University of California - Berkeley. You were given the opportunity to lecture there with some of the brightest minds in the country- one of them being physicist Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. Your disciplines differed but had the same solid foundation of facts, evidence, and logic. Needing to see things to believe it for yourself was one thing the two of you had in common, which brought you together. You were interested in his lectures and as he was yours. Both of you have learned a lot from each other and have become good friends. However, there were times when you would interact, and it felt intense. You’d grade papers together in comfortable silence, sometimes stealing glances at one another. Whenever you caught Robert staring, you’d give him a small, knowing smile. When he caught you staring, he’d hold your gaze, which made you nervous.
You enjoyed attending Robert’s political discussions after class to see how passionate he was about current issues. Dr. Lawrence, your other beloved colleague, often warned you to avoid them, but you ignored him. The energy you’d feel toward Robert every time he’d rant about how every person deserves the freedom and the right to choose was electric. It was the very basis of your beliefs as a historian and a professor. The two of you would often go for a cigarette in the courtyard between classes to enjoy the fresh air and discuss politics. Robert loved hearing your stance on things, especially since you knew your stuff about the history of politics and how things work with them. The tensions were high that day, and before you knew it, Robert leaned into you as you spoke. But before anything could happen, it was time for classes to resume. So you went your respective ways.
When you were contacted by the government to assist on a top-secret project, you were shocked. They needed your expertise in politics and history, as well as your reading and writing skills. You asked if Robert would be involved due to his talent in psychics, but you got no answer. You didn’t take long to learn of Dr. Lawrence’s involvement in the project, and you were ecstatic to have someone you knew tagging along. He was worried about Robert not being present for the Manhattan Project simply because of his mutual and close friends being communists. You insisted you’d speak to Robert about the matter, but Ernest objected. However, after a meeting about the Spanish Revolution that Robert had held, Ernest blew up on him. He mentioned there was a project and that Robert wasn’t allowed on it as long as he was sticking his nose in communist politics. So, Robert stopped the meetings, and sure enough, General Leslie Groves eventually poked his way into Robert’s office one afternoon to discuss the Project.
Now, the three of you were involved and had to leave Berkeley. Robert quickly assumed the position of Project leader and already had a location picked out for the Project headquarters. You had heard many stories of this location from him and demanded he take you to it before construction began. You and Robert left Berkeley and traveled to Los Alamos via horse, talking and laughing the whole time about your childhoods and times in school. You both decided to camp there overnight and enjoy the desert and its beautiful sky before dealing with the most significant project in human history. As you sat by the fire that night with Robert, you stared at the sky in wonder. Robert watched you with just as much wonder, enjoying seeing you smile. Because pretty soon, there wouldn’t be much to smile about.
By the time you had moved into Los Alamos and started getting to work, the tension between you and Robert was becoming impalpable. The camping trip solidified whatever was going on between you two- even if it was nothing at all as of right now. Robert ensured you were at every meeting so you could give your two cents if it was needed; you were the brains and the empathy of the project. Gen. Groves admired you for it because no matter how steep the project was getting, you never once panicked or got in over your head. He also admired how you managed to keep your hands off Robert despite how you looked at him. And one day, he mentioned it to you.
“What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get out of here?” Gen. Groves asked you one day during a field test.
“Oh, uh,” you hadn’t given it much thought, “I’m not sure. Probably continue lecturing.”
“No one special in your life you want to be with?” Groves asked, a kind smile on his face.
“Not really,” you mumbled sadly, your eyes glanced over at Robert, “Not yet, anyway.”
“Maybe once all of this is over, you can pursue them,” Groves suggested knowingly, “We’re so close now. It won’t be long.”
You nodded, seeing that he knew who was on your mind just by how he studied you, “Maybe.”
After all the hard work and growing sexual tension over the tedious years at Los Alamos, the bubble separating you and Robert finally burst the morning of the Trinity Test. The test was a success, and Robert was basking in the afterglow. Everything from getting his hand shaken to being carried by the crowd of excited and ecstatic workers- it brought him some relief. There’s always sunshine before the rain.
You invited Robert over to your quaint house on the outskirts of Los Alamos for your nightly glass of wine, but this time it was heavier. It was more meaningful because you finally accomplished what you’d been working so hard for. When Robert sat next to you on the chaise next to the fireplace, his leg touched yours. The sexual energy was like a thick, wet blanket. You took large gulps of your wine as Robert’s eyes stared into yours, his glass pressed to his lips with slower sips.
“I can’t believe it’s all over,” you shook your head.
“Me either.”
“What do we do now? What’s life after this going to be like?”
“I’m not sure about that,” Robert had set his wine down on the floor, “But I’m sure about something else.”
“And what’s that?” you asked, polishing off your drink.
“You.”
You slowly sat back up after putting your empty glass on the floor by your feet, “Me?”
“Yes,” Robert paused, “Ever since I met you, I’ve wanted you in ways I can’t explain. And I can usually explain anything.”
You chuckled at that, nodding in agreement, “That you can.”
Robert leaned in, and your smile faltered. His hand reached up to touch your cheek gently, his thumb pushing some of your hair out of the way. Your eyes fluttered shut as you waited with bated breath for Robert to finally, finally kiss you. It had been years of waiting now. And the second his lips pressed to yours, all that time seemed to drift away. There was an explosion in your chest at the feeling of Robert pressing against you on the chaise, pushing you down onto its cushions. His coat and tie have long since been discarded, so all you have to do is worry at the buttons of his shirt with your shaking fingers. Eventually, you get the shirt opened and off his slender frame as it hovered over you. Robert let his skillful tongue slip past your lips with ease, exploring every centimeter of your mouth. How you had longed for this moment.
“Need you, Robert,” you pulled away for air and sighed as his hands pushed up your legs and underneath your dress, “Always have.”
“I’m here, darling. I’m here now.”
Robert shoved the skirt of your dress over your hips and stomach, revealing your slowly soaking white and dainty underwear. He hummed in satisfaction when his finger circled the wet spot at your entrance, causing a moan to leave your lips.
“Eager, are we?” he teased, pulling down your underwear without hesitation.
“Yes,” you said bravely, “Now, nothing fancy tonight. We have plenty of time for other things, but for now, I need you inside me.”
“Alright then,” Robert chuckles, hastily unbuckling his slacks before pushing them far enough down his legs to be comfortable.
He glided his tip along your slickness, gathering all he could to push inside you with less friction. You whined at the contact, a wanton moan escaping you suddenly as he moved into you at a patient pace. But you were anything but patient, especially at this point. You pushed your hips, causing Robert to enter you further, to which he let out a delicious groan. His hands gripped your sides intensely, sure to leave bruises tomorrow. He buried his face in your neck, his teeth baring down into the skin as he felt you suck his cock in.
“Wanted- needed this for so long,” Robert whispered in your ear as his tip finally brushed against your insides.
“God, me too,” you cried out when he slowly pulled back out and then slammed back into you, “Fuck.”
“Such a dirty mouth,” Robert tutted playfully, to which you flashed him a smile, moving your hips to wiggle him further inside you.
Robert had thrust himself into you again, this time a little faster than the last. He kept doing this until he had a steady rhythm, lifting your legs to put on his shoulders to get a better angle. You growled at the sensation of him hitting your cervix, and your hands scratched down his back. Robert picked up speed, almost making the chaise scoot on the floor. He was fucking you like mad, and you were taking every second of it like his cock was water and you were thirsting in the desert. In this situation, the figure of speech wasn’t too far from the truth. The feeling of him repeatedly steering into your stomach made you nearly squeal from pleasure. Robert presses your thighs to your shoulders, the undersides of them against his chest. You were a mess, moaning like a whore and gripping Robert as if you blinked hard enough, he’d disappear.
“Taking me like such a good girl,” Robert grunted, moving a hand to your cunt to swipe at your clit in time with his thrusts.
You tossed your head back, crying out at the sensation. No one had ever fucked you with such vigor and passion. You felt that growing bubble in your gut, expecting it to burst any second.
“Cum in me,” you demanded, “Need to feel you.”
Robert laughed breathlessly at you, “Are you sure?”
“Certain.”
And as if he weren’t going fast enough, he pulled out, flipped you over, and took you from behind even faster than before. Robert pushed your cheek into the chaise cushion, watching you as you side-eyed him with utmost pleasure. You could feel yourself clenching around him, your orgasm creeping up. Robert pushed your lower back down as far as it’d go, your stomach flush with the material of the chaise underneath you. Your ass being in the air caused Robert to hit a new spot inside you, sending you reeling and spilling over the edge. As your cunt suffocated his cock with its walls, Robert followed your release with his own. His hot cum filled you up with warmth, your hips still bouncing against him. Robert panted from behind you, slowly pulling himself out of your now-dripping pussy.
You rolled back onto your back, now facing Robert, “That was… wow,” you exhaled.
“I concur,” Robert joked, sitting back and pulling you onto his lap.
You hummed in exhaustion, blissed out as you hung your head on his shoulder.
“Want to stay?” you asked tiredly, eyeing the now-spilled remainder of wine Robert had placed on the floor earlier. You’d worry about it tomorrow.
“I’d love to,” Robert muttered into your ear, kissing it before picking you up off his lap.
The rest of your night is spent watching Robert study you as you lay beside each other in bed. He took you in as if he was seeing you in a new perspective- and he was. Robert was as curious about you as he was about the world and how it worked. Except now, he had to worry about not destroying you like he had the world.

You mentioned Clark Ashton Smith. Which of his stories would you recommend? So far I've been underwhelmed.
Context for anyone who doesn't know: Clark Ashton Smith was one of the "Big Three" of Weird Tales (the other two being Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard) and is certainly the least famous. Even if you don't know who Lovecraft or Howard are, you've probably heard of Cthulu and Conan the Barbarian. Smith is also certainly the weirdest of them all by a good margin and the most inconsistent in his writing. You pick up a Lovecraft story and 90% of the time it's going to be at least competently written and you know the broad strokes of what the content will be (unnameable cosmic horrors, nervous breakdowns, and often very explicit racism). A Smith story is just as likely to feel like it was written by an accomplished poet as it is to feel like a teenager's drivel. And it could be about wizards at the end of time, or spacewrecked astronauts, or medieval French bishops. The only consistent thing about his work is that you'll need a dictionary by your side while you read it. Get ready for words like "mephitic," "hippocephalic," and "cyclopean" to be abused in ways that even Lovecraft probably found egregious. (Emperor of Dreams? More like Emperor of Purple Prose! Haha, good joke Logan.) The bizzarity and unevenness of his output are probably the qualities that I find so engaging about it and also the things that have kept him from being as beloved as his peers into the present day.
Anyway, I haven't done a deep-dive on Smith since I read his complete works all the way through. Some of his stories are pretty fresh in my mind, but most of them I haven't read in 5-6 years. Keep all that in mind and I'll put my recommendations below the break:
Tumblr media
"The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis": Definitely my personal favorite Smith story and probably one of his best. If you don't like this one, it's unlikely you'll be a fan. On its own a very good "ancient cosmic horror" story, what really makes it stand out is it's setting: a near-future (relative to the 1932 publication date) Mars that has been colonized (in a very 19th century sense of the word) by humans. The Martian city of Ignarh is apparently a hub for interplanetary commerce and the subaltern Martian indigenous population provide local guides for human archaeologists to study (and no doubt exploit) the ruins of ancient civilizations that abound on the planet. Smith wrote two other stories in the same setting, "The Dweller in the Gulf" and "Vulthoom" that re-tread the same plot beats but lend a little more color to the Martians themselves. A writer capable of viewing the Martians as sympathetic peoples rather than as "native savages" could've spun this setting into something truly great. Richard Corben also does a fantastic comic adaptation.
"The Abominations of Yondo": Didn't like the first recommendation? I'll take one more shot at making you a fan. "Abominations" is a very short read that manages to contain all the hallmarks of a classic Smith story. Nobody else does it like him and if you don't like it then you just don't like it.
"City of the Singing Flame": A story of inter-dimensional exploration that manages to weave together Smith's obvious love for his home state of California with his penchant for imaginary places beyond time and space. It has a sequel that I thought was okay but most people dislike. If you like this story, it's probably better to treat it as a standalone.
"A Night in Malnéant": A somber, dreary horror tale that I don't think gets enough love or at least isn't anthologized particularly often. Tones down the weirdness a bit, but in a good way.
"Isle of the Torturers": Far-future horror-fantasy that really sticks the ending. Also does the same thing as "Yoh-Vombis" where it has a setting that's only briefly introduced but could easily be spun into a full-on novel. Great Halloween read.
Off the top of my head, those are some of my personal favorites. "Return of the Sorcerer" gets anthologized a lot. It's not weird enough for me but I think it's considered one of his better stories. Similarly I'm not a big fan of his Averoigne cycle of stories (set in medieval France), but if you want some dark ages sword and sorcery, "Mother of Toads" and "The Colossus of Ylourgne" are the ones I liked best.
I'd also like to mention "The Great God Awto" which is a truly bad short story but notable for being one of the earliest pieces of anti-car fiction of which I'm aware. Predates Bradbury's "The Pedestrian" by more than a decade.
Also if you can't find any of Smith's work at your local library, check out eldritchdark.org. I believe all his fiction is available for free here as well as his visual art and other resources.

Today's compilation:
Baby Boomer Classics: Surfin' Sixties 1985 Surf Rock / Surf Pop / Instrumental Surf
Folks, we've finally done it! We've reached the end of the California-based JCI label's Baby Boomer Classics series! And to close this whole thing out, we've got some sweet tunes from one of the best musical phenomena that the 60s ever had to offer: those good ol' surfin' vibes, which presently seem to go well with the absolutely brutal heat that much of the US is having to endure right now, and also serve as JCI's fond remembrance of all this stuff that was emanating from their own idyllically depicted home state 🏄🌞.
Now, essentially there were two different sounds that ended up comprising surf music altogether. You had your instrumental stuff that was pioneered by people like Dick Dale, and came with this wet sound and thick and twangy guitar tone; and then you had your vocal pop stuff, which had those uniquely patented and super dreamy Beach Boys group harmonies. And the two of these sounds combined ended up forming a whole California myth, centered around endlessly youthful, carefree, beach blonde summer fun.
And while this short crop of a dozen surf classics contains neither Dick Dale nor The Beach Boys on it—probably because the licensing costs proved to be too expensive—this still serves as a pretty good surf comp. The only thing is that with a lot of these things, if you've heard one, you've pretty much heard most of them, because you'll definitely find the bulk of these tracks on plenty of other general surf comps too.
But be that as it may, as the title suggests, we do have a bunch of surf classics on here, both of the instrumental rock and vocal pop variety. Duo Jan & Dean, who weren't always surf musicians themselves, but ended up becoming close with the Beach Boys and then became the country's second foremost surf pop act as a result, bookend this album with a pair of their biggest hits: "Ride the Wild Surf" to open, and then their signature, Brian Wilson co-penned and missed opportunity, "Surf City," to close. And we also, of course, have the iconic "Wipe Out" from The Surfaris on the instrumental side of things, and then for something a bit more unique and progressive on that same front, we have the plaintive "Lonely Surfer" from constant Phil Spector arranger Jack Nitzsche, which tries to capture the sonic essence of a towering tidal wave by adding a 'Wall of Sound' production style by way of dramatic strings.
So, not much of a unique surf comp here by any means, but because I really do love any opportunity I get to listen to this old stuff, this is by far one of my favorite dispatches from the Baby Boomer Classics series as a whole. I have absolutely *no* coordination or balance to be able to stand on a surfboard, and I also despise sand in my shoe and a hot, beating sun, but goddamn do I still fucking adore these vibes here 😍.
And that's it! No more Baby Boomer Classics from me for a very long time! Overall, this was a great budget comp series that never allowed itself to give into the temptation of deceitfully filling out their releases with dreadful re-recordings, which is what a lot of labels like JCI succumbed to. Every song they ever selected for one of these comps used its master recording, and that should be applauded. And with the whole series taken together, what you end up having is a good foundation of a bunch of quality music from the 50s through 70s, making for a quick and dirty way for an eclectic listener to build what beloved music critic Robert Christgau has referred to as a 'basic record library.'
And a new series like this one is on the way (crowd boos), but not quite yet (crowd cheers), but it's going to be a lot longer than this one (crowd boos), but when I'm done ramming through it you'll never have to hear from me about it ever again and I can then go on to explore other stuff! (crowd goes into delirium)
Highlights:
Jan & Dean - "Ride the Wild Surf" The Sunrays - "I Live for the Sun" The Marketts - "Out of Limits" The Rivieras - "California Sun" The Surfaris - "Wipe Out" Ronny & the Daytonas - "G.T.O." The Surfaris - "Surfer Joe" The Routers - "Let's Go (Pony)" Jack Nitzsche - "The Lonely Surfer" Jan & Dean - "Surf City"

Fourteenth Week
Hi, my name is Robert Laskarzewski, and I am currently a sophomore at the Darla Moore School of Business studying International Business and Marketing. I’m a part of the International Business Responsible International Leadership (RIL) program and will spend the Spring and Fall semesters at the ESSEC Cergy campus. I was born and raised in California, about an hour away from San Francisco. I chose to attend the University of South Carolina specifically because of the RIL program and the amount of time abroad that was offered. Once I was accepted, it was an easy choice to choose to pursue my studies there.
Unsurprisingly, I started my Monday by going to the Paris Flea Market again. I realized that the market was far bigger than I had realized. There were two or three other sections that I had not stepped foot in until this week – I’ll be back in the coming weeks for sure. I also went to go get some of my film developed at a place called Negatif, an independent film developing studio in the center of Paris. I had found it on google and the place was really interesting and exactly what I expected of a film developing shop. Later whence I was back in Cergy, I visited the Église Saint-Christophe de Cergy, a church near the Cergy port area (construction beginning in the 12th century and finishing in the 13th century).
On Tuesday, I had my final for my E-business class which was taken in-person but online. On Wednesday, I did another long run to the Axe Majeur of Cergy where I could take in the nice weather we were having. I also had my last class session for my EU history class, one of my favorite classes that I’ve had so far. On Thursday, I had part of my French language final where we had to listen to several audio excerpts and answer some questions about them (I thought it was easier than the mid term that we had).
On Friday, I had my final Responsible Marketing class where my group had to present our final proposition for Longchamp (a recycled leather jewelry program) and a video along with it. Afterwards, I went to Paris to pick up my developed film but unfortunately, out of the 72 pictures I had taken, (2 rolls of 36 pictures) only 4 had been captured correctly a bleak 5% success rate. Although I was a little disappointed, I knew that this was just part of the learning process and that I can only hope to improve upon it. Either way, I received a refund from the store, so it wasn’t a complete loss. For dinner, I went to a restaurant in the port with some of my friends and I got a big hamburger.
On Saturday, the only thing on my agenda was attending the Paris F.C. game against Saint-Étienne – a team with lots of history and a successful past but now is stuck in the second division of French soccer. As soon as I arrived, my heart was in my stomach as I saw the crowds of green gathering outside the stadium (green being the color of Saint-Étienne). Although P.F.C. was technically ranked higher than Sainté, I knew that the number of supporters could be troublesome for my beloved Parisians. Less than a minute in, the visitors were a goal up – a nightmare scenario for the home team. I thought there was no way the team could get back into the game after being shocked by such an early goal, but they were somehow able to scrape back one goal. Then another. The home crowd was flying, the belief was there that a win was possible. Less than five minutes later, the visitors scored again, putting the Parisians back at square one. Two quick consecutive goals for the visitors in the second half meant that all hope was lost by the end of the game. The visitors’ end was roaring with their devoted fans, and it felt like the stadium was being dominated by green shirts in the stands. Despite the loss, the home fans (myself included) still clapped for the team as they left the field after the game to put in a valiant performance against a side with such huge support.
On Sunday, I was supposed to have an Easter brunch with several of the members of my cohort, but unfortunately the plans fell through. Instead, I ended up getting an early dinner with some of my friends at a small taco restaurant. It was good but could not compare to what I would be able to get in the states. Afterwards, we got ice cream and wandered throughout Parc Monceau, a pretty park that was filled with locals and tourists alike, soaking in the sunny weather.

Robert Downey Jr. AI warning aimed at Hollywood executives
Tumblr media
Robert Downey Jr. has issued a pointed warning to Hollywood executives and decision-makers about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate his likeness, particularly in relation to his beloved character Tony Stark/Iron Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Downey Jr., who has been a pivotal figure in the MCU, expressed his concerns during a recent podcast appearance, highlighting the significance of consent in the age of rapidly advancing technology.
Robert Downey Jr.'s Confidence in Current Marvel Leadership
Enduring Trust in Marvel Studios Having portrayed the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man in ten Marvel films from 2008 to 2019, Downey Jr. is confident that the existing leadership at Marvel Studios will not misuse AI technology to bring back his character without his authorization. He believes that the close-knit group of decision-makers at Marvel Studios would lie at the core of such decisions. "I am not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway, and they would never do that to me, with or without me," he stated. This trust underscores Downey's long-standing relationship with Marvel and his belief in their ethical approach to storytelling. Explicit Warning to Future Executives Despite his confidence in the current executives, Downey Jr. expressed serious concern over the intentions of future Hollywood executives regarding the use of AI. During his guest appearance on the On With Kara Swisher podcast, he made it clear that he intends to take preemptive legal action against anyone who attempts to recreate his likeness using AI without proper consent. "I would like to here state that I intend to sue all future executives just on spec," he declared, emphasizing the gravity of the situation as the industry begins to toy with AI capabilities.
The Legal Dimensions of AI Usage in Hollywood
Posthumous Legal Actions: Serious or Humorous? Downey Jr.'s remarks about potential legal actions posthumously have generated a mix of reaction, as he humorously asserted that even after his passing, his law firm would "still be very active." This statement sheds light on the often uncharted legal waters that AI usage presents in Hollywood. The efficacy of such legal action after a person's death brings forth discussions about intellectual property rights and what protections can be enforced in the digital age. Legal Precedents and Industry Trends Downey Jr.'s concerns are set against a backdrop of increasing dialogue around the ethics of AI in the entertainment sector. Recently, the SAG-AFTRA union, which represents actors, held a significant strike that raised concerns about the unauthorized use of AI clones, ultimately leading California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign two bills into law aimed at protecting actors and performers from such practices. As the industry grapples with these developments, Downey Jr.'s warnings highlight substantial legal implications and the need for safeguards in an evolving landscape.
Current Involvement with AI Themes
Downey Jr.'s Role in *McNeal* In his current endeavors, Downey Jr. is exploring themes related to AI in his role in the Broadway play *McNeal*. The production critiques corporate dominance in the realm of AI and scrutinizes the disruptions AI technologies are creating within creative industries. Through this role, Downey Jr. is not only showcasing his acting abilities but also engaging with pressing societal issues tied to technological advancements. The Broader Industry Context The landscape of Hollywood is currently rife with debate regarding the implications of AI technologies. As discussions around consent, representation, and ethical standards become more urgent, Downey Jr.'s warnings serve as part of a broader narrative concerning how technology intersects with artistry. The entertainment industry faces a pivotal moment, needing to establish boundaries that protect artists while balancing innovation.
Upcoming Projects Amid AI Concerns
Return to the MCU: *Avengers: Doomsday* as Doctor Doom Amid concerns about AI, Downey Jr. is set to make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026, taking on the role of the formidable villain Doctor Doom in the upcoming film *Avengers: Doomsday*. This return marks a new chapter for the actor, who has shaped the MCU as Iron Man. His upcoming portrayal of Doctor Doom contrasts with his pressing concerns over AI usage, striking a balance between legacy and innovation. Future Trajectories for AI in Film Looking ahead, the future of AI in Hollywood remains uncertain, as discussions continue regarding actors' rights and the ethical implications of digital likenesses. As more creators and decision-makers navigate this complex landscape, the industry's direction will be shaped by both legal frameworks and artistic freedoms. Downey Jr.'s outspoken concerns contribute significantly to an evolving dialogue about the future roles of technology and artistry in film. In summary, Robert Downey Jr. emphasizes the importance of protecting his likeness from unauthorized AI use, reflecting broader industry challenges surrounding ethical practices in entertainment. His proactive stance not only focuses attention on artists' rights but also invites a necessary dialogue about the responsibilities of today's creators and executives. As the conversation around AI continues to unfold, it is crucial for all stakeholders to remain engaged and informed on this critical issue. ADHD. impulsiveness, procrastination, *maybe* a bit of rejection sensitivity, AND you CANNOT tell me that all those repetitive story arcs where Tomo forces Todd to do a basic task DOESN'T resemble executive dysfunction. we all wanna kick ourselves for not doing the thing later on, but tomo has the power to actually do that.
...as for everything else, though...

Five Unforgettable Films by Randall Miller
Randall Miller, a longtime director, is thought for his off-kilter comedic fashion and character-driven films. As anyone who's got directed mainstream, big-budget Hollywood movies in addition to a amount of unbiased movies, Miller only normally takes on projects that connect a further meaning and will resonate with audiences all around the planet.
“I make films with heart,” reported Miller. “I want people to have the ability to connect with my movies and find the which means in them.”
Honoring Miller’s career, let’s take a seem back again at some of his most acclaimed tasks.
“Bottle Shock”
“Bottle Shock” stars Alan Rickman as being a snooty British sommelier who arrives to California wine country inside the 1970s to find what all the excitement is all about. The business in California is younger, as well as wine enterprise stays pretty snobby regarding the superiority of French wines. On the other hand, with Rickman on their own side, a father and son winemaking staff, played respectively by Bill Pullman and Chris Pine, proves the snobs erroneous. This feel-good movie which has a rocking 1970s soundtrack can be a beloved tale of the gatherings that place Napa wines to the map.
Tumblr media
“CBGB”
Another collaboration with Alan Rickman, “CBGB” catalogues the increase of the famed punk rock location in seventies Ny. Like “Bottle Shock,” the film is about an underdog going from the percentages and coming out on top rated. For virtually any music connoisseur, this film is often a must-see.
“Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School”
“Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School” stars an amazing cast - Marisa Tomei, Robert Carlyle, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, and Danny DeVito - in the touching film about love and loss. The movie follows widower Frank (Carlyle) who helps Steve (Goodman) fulfill his dying desire to reunite by using a former love interest, Marienne (Steenburgen). Simultaneously, Carlyle finds his own love: Meredith (Tomei). This love story may have you crying and rooting for the characters simultaneously.
“Nobel Son”
This dark comedy can be a third Rickman-Miller collaboration. In it, Rickman plays Eli Michaelson, a Nobel Prize winner who receives the award’s handsome payout. Having said that, everything goes incorrect when a criminal kidnaps his son and holds him for ransom for that prize money. This dysfunctional family is place to the test when things are on the line. “Rickman was always brilliant to work with, and Jody and I miss him dearly,” explained Miller. “’Nobel Son’ was some of the very best work of his occupation.”
“Class Act”
Miller’s first movie would be a prince-and-pauper tale of switched identity. The movie stars Kid N Play in this absurdist take on a high school comedy romp. Still in his twenties, Miller made his first film for Warner Bros. The film can be a love letter towards the steady diet of great John Hughes movies he was raised on. Repeatedly through the years, he has been approached about a remake.

A Mighty Triumph
“When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely He was the Son of God!” Matthew 27:54NIV
Roman soldiers ‘got’ what Pharisees couldn’t understand. They understood the manifestation of Christ.
The veil separating the ‘holy place’ from the ‘most holy place’ was torn in two from top to bottom. Finally, God could be with the mankind He'd made and loved. Historian Josephus reportedly wrote that the temple’s veil was 4 inches thick.
A major phenomena was the total solar eclipse for three hours, noon to three. I was in the solar eclipse in California back in 2017, it wasn’t three hours. Per Google— ‘The longest possible duration of a total solar eclipse is 7 minutes and 32 seconds.’ The earth stopped rotation and no one realized time literally stood still. God can accomplish anything He chooses to do.
Besides the strange events— Can you imagine the grief of Mary, Mary Magdalene, the apostles, His other beloved followers? I’ve comforted spouse’s grieving for their deceased mates, also parents grieving for their child. My best friend lost both son and husband within seven days. We leaned on each other and sobbed for days, she for years. Jesus’ followers didn’t lose a cherished friend, beloved son. No! They lost their hopes forever for their nation’s future, for they knew He was Messiah. They’d expected Him to save them from Rome then.
Rather than being dead, Jesus spent three days busy in the bowels of the earth. Ephesians 4:8-10NIV describes this time. “…When He ascended on high, He took many captives and gave gifts to His people.” (What does “He ascended” mean except that He also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)” — Colossians 2:15ESV adds to this description. “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him.” — Christ tells what He did in Hades in Revelation 1:18ESV. “And the Living One. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”
Jesus removed from satan forever the power over death, for every believer, when He took away satan’s keys. One experience I had almost took my life. I walked the hallway to death. I can tell you, the pain you can’t stand is the threshold to that hallway between life and the hereafter. After that— “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1Corinthians 15:54-56ESV. We’ll never experience more than that one unendurable pain. Glory to God. Some won’t even experience that pain.
Grief had to give way to exuberant joy. These followers of Christ had the most blessed resurrection Sunday. Joy unspeakable and full of glory. Mom shared in that joy. Every Resurrection Sunday Mom’s wonderful, alto voice awoke the family singing what Robert Lowry penned— “Up from the grave He arose; With a mighty triumph o’er His foes; He arose the Victor from the dark domain. And He lives forever, with His saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!”
What I want to tell you today is— no grief here: HALLELUJAH HE IS RISEN INDEED!
Do you know Him today? Don’t turn Him away? Choose Jesus the VICTOR. It’s your choice. You choose.
LET’S PRAY: Holy Yahweh, thank You for the wise plan You had to rescue humanity from hell. Thank You for paying the price of separation, and seeing Your only Son punished and murdered for us. Help us to appreciate this more and spread the gospel, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

girl let me name a few distinctly Canadian things
Nanaimo bars
Politeness Culture (a source of chagrin for those who dislike passive aggressiveness and Insinuation)
political party fun time (Conservative, Liberal, NDP, Green, etc.)
arguably some of the worst medical ethics arguments and policies in place (even worse than parts of the US, so I've heard, from especially incensed friends)
the Quebec-Canada hissy argument (is QC a part of Canada? they certainly don't consider themselves to be. Should we grant them independence? but why should we?? etc. etc. I don't think California or West Virginia are trying to be their own country)
the Alberta oil crisis thing was a pretty distinctly Canadian issue
I'm pretty sure the euthanasia debate is more heated in Canada right now due to MAID; we have a lot of doctors and pediatricians being very vocal against it at the moment
Canadian Christianity is SUCH a spectrum
maple syrup (it's in everything) (we use it in so many ways)
Anne of Green Gables. Y'all L.M. Montgomery is definitely not American
contemporary writers from Canada - Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Joseph Boyden, Thomas King, Robert Munsch, Malcolm Gladwell
not familiar with America's, but our Indigenous lit scene is growing rapidly, and Indigenous scholarship and Indigenous studies is on the rise in many departments (anthro, lit, linguistics, fine arts)
musicians from Canada: Shawn Mendes, Diana Krall, Feist, Arcade Fire, Joni Mitchell
Justin Bieber (alas he is Canadian)
Rupi Kaur (this is not a point of pride)
Michael Buble perpetually on the gosh darn radio every Christmas
Trans Mountain pipeline debate
there's a fair bit of heresy in the Catholic Church in QC, as far as I've heard
significantly less rioting and protesting, though that's on the rise in universities, I think
fewer homeschoolers
the Sarah McLachlan craze (every Canadian millenial has listened to her)
Emily St. John Mandel beloved!!!!
Yann Martel (of Life of Pi fame)
I'm pretty sure our Stella-Stella-Olla song is different
standard children's games in Canada: Stella-Stella-Olla, Concentration, Grounders
in-country flights more expensive than out of country flights
I don't think people are as keen to do a roadtrip across Canada as they are across the US
Hudson's Bay
more integration of Indigenous art and architecture(? I can't make any blanket statements about the US) we have a lot of totem poles, displays of Indigenous visual art and poetry, etc. also patterns and images woven into airport decor, etc.
our money is plastic. lol
LOONIES. TOONIES
currently movement towards supporting local farmers; it's a pretty prominent thing here to go to berry farms etc. during season; we also have organizations that help move and distribute produce from further north/harder to reach locations according to your monthly/yearly produce subscription
Newfoundland's a pretty unique place and subculture!
in my part of Canada, there's a pretty big craze over bubble tea, bubble waffles, Korean barbecue, sushi, poke bowls, laser tag, escape rooms, and hiking co-existing
lots of Asian, Black, and Middle-Eastern people on the West Coast; some on the East Coast, not a lot in between
Canada Day is not as explosive of a time as the fourth of July
FORCED TO COLOUR IN THE STUPID PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES IN SECOND GRADE. HAVE YOU TRIED TO COLOUR IN NUNAVUT AS A SECOND GRADER. HAVE YOU
Does Canada really count as non American though
Grace, how could you (wailing noises)

on another note i finished the secret history today (16th dec— this is actually been a draft for ages asdjfhd). screaming. it was very, very well-written. this'll be a long-form work in progress but i wanted to share my favourite parts of the book. feel free to gloss over this <3
(pg 38— absolutely made me laugh)
He pointed to me as if he were the host of a panel discussion on a talk show. "And you, what's-your-name, Robert? What sort of pens did they teach you to use in California?"
"Ball points," I said.
Bunny nodded deeply. "An honest man, gentlemen. Simple tastes. Lays his cards on the table. I like that."
(pg 40— richard's first glimpse of julian's discussions, which are glorified monologues and Brilliant. i adore the sentiment because it's so relatable, in a weird way)
"(...) It is a terrible thing to learn as a child that one is a being separate from all the world, that no one and no thing hurts along with one's burned tongues and skinned knees, that one's aches and pains are all one's own. Even more terrible, as we grow older, to learn that no person, no matter how beloved, can truly understand us. Our own selves make us most unhappy, and that's why we're so anxious to lose them, don't you think?"
(pg 45— henry being a weird-ass man from the get-go; Richard being awestruck but overall meh)
"(...) Are we, in this room, really very different from the Greeks or the Romans? Obsessed with duty, piety, loyalty, sacrifice? All those things which are to modern tastes so chilling?"
I looked around the table at the six faces. To modern tastes they were somewhat chilling. I imagine any other teacher would've been on the phone to Psychological Counselling in about five minutes had heard what Henry said about arming the Greek glass and marching into Hampden town.
(pg 47— beauty is terror. WHAT A LINE)
"Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it."
also pg 47 is this:
"If we are strong enough in our souls we can rip away the veil and look that naked, terrible beauty right in the face: let God consume us, devour us, unstring our bones. Then spit us out reborn."
(pg 50— donna tartt's descriptive writing strikes again!)
"He was, if possible, even a bigger windbag than Dr Roland. Together, they were like one of those superhero alliances in the comic books, invincible, an unconquerable confederation of boredom and confusion."
(pg 59— bunny being, at first, a lovable idiot. i thoroughly despise him but he is written Impeccably)
"(...) why don't you buy yourself some Berlitz records and brush up on your French. Find a little can-can girl or something. Voolay-voo coushay avec moi and all that."
(pg 61— i don't want to go into it, obviously, but this is where i begin to thoroughly despise bunny for his really shitty homophobia and anti-semitism that made me, for a split second, wonder whether this was being canonically condoned. man, this must read like a satire at times! /hj)
(pg 64— charles and camilla slowly becoming more suspicious with bunny's "but I wouldn't want to marry him, would I?" line)
(pg 72— the ravens' mild foreshadowing, which i quickly googled albeit belatedly)
"Three of them for three of us. That's an augury, I bet."
"An omen."
"Of what?" I said.
"Don't know," said Charles. "Henry's the ornithomantist. The bird-diviner."
(pg 75— henry's 'aesthetic objection' to standardised tests lmao)
(pg 82— richard being genuinely depressed by reading the great gatsby because they seemed to be too similar)
(pg 96— the first impression of closeness between henry and richard)
"You're not very happy where you come from, are you?" he said.
I was startled at this Holmes-like deduction. He smiled at my evident discomfiture.
"Don't worry. You hide it very cleverly," he said, going back to his book. Then he looked up again. "The others really don't understand that sort of thing, you know."
He said that without malice, without empathy, without even much in the way of interest. I was not even sure what he meant, but for the first time, I had a glimmer of something I had not previously understood: why the others were all so fond of him. (...)
I doubt if Milton himself could have impressed me more.
(pg 98— henry's surprise about the moon landing)
Once, over dinner, Henry was quite startled to learn from me that men had walked on the moon. "No," he said, putting down his fork.
"It's true," chorused the rest, who had somehow managed to pick this up along the way.
"I don't believe it."
"I saw it," said Bunny. "It was on television."
"How did they get there? When did this happen?").
(pg 101— marion and bunny being completely predictably chaotic)
It would be Marion, her little mouth tight, looking like a small, angry doll.
"Is Bunny there?" she would say, stretching up on tiptoe and craning to look past me into the room.
"He's not here."
"Are you sure?"
"He's not here, Marion."
"Bunny!" she would call ominously.
No answer.
"Bunny!"
And then, to my acute embarrassment, Bunny would emerge sheepishly in the doorway. "Hello, sweetie."
(pg 107— richard's life at francis's country house)
Everything, somehow, fit together; some sly and benevolent Providence was revealing itself by degrees and I felt myself trembling on the brink of a fabulous discovery, as though any morning it was all going to come together - my future, my past, the whole of my life - and I was going to sit up in bed like a thunderbolt and say oh! oh! oh!
(pg 109— the description of "launching merrily down the path of sin again.")
(pg 119— richard's sudden desire to just live at the country house forever; his lack of plans)
(pg 137— richard, liminal. ghost imagery.... so prevalent omw.)
It seemed my whole life was composed of these disjointed fractions of time, hanging around in one public place and then another, as if I were waiting for trains that never came. And, like one of those ghosts who are said to linger around depots late at night, asking passers-by for the timetable of the Midnight Express that derailed twenty years before, I wandered from light to light until that dreaded hour when all the doors closed and, stepping from the world of and warmth people and conversation overheard, I felt the old familiar cold twist through my bones again and then it was all forgotten, the warmth, the lights; I had never been warm in my life, ever.
(pg 139— dr roland and richard's incredibly chaotic relationship, even if they barely speak)
I was at Dr Roland's office every morning like clockwork. He, an alleged psychologist, noticed not one of the Ten Warning Signs of Nervous Collapse or whatever it was he was educated to see, and qualified to teach.
(pg 141— richard's hallucinations and me being very very worried)
(pg 146, 149— literally just henry being kind to richard in hospital and at his home)
(pg 176— hello i am very mad at bunny's anti-semitism)
(pg 196— i am forever terrified by henry's description of the ritual, thank you donna tartt /hj)
(pg 204— i don't even know, i was so perturbed by this at this point. it begun to sit awfully with me but.)
"(...) Scarcely an hour before, we'd all been really, truly out of our minds. And it may be a superhuman effort to lose oneself so completely, but that's nothing compared to the effort of getting oneself back again."
(pg 227— bunny's habit of leaving crumbs in notebooks.)
(pg 229— i am deeply worried about the fact that richard would rather have died than ask his rich friends for money. crying)
(pg 235— the entire page, solely for how richard feels so close to the greek class because they see the world so beautifully)
(pg 262— the culminating realisation that bunny was a shitty person and continued to mock and nip at them)
(pg 263— this one line.)
Love doesn't conquer everything. And whoever thinks it does is a fool.
(pg 264— bunny's misogyny. more blue angry noises)
(pg 266— suspicious camilla and charles........)
(pg 326— richard after bunny's death, reflecting)
Not that everything 'went black', nothing of the sort; only that the event itself is cloudy because of some primitive, numbing effect that obscured it at the time; the same effect, I suppose, that enables panicked mothers to swim icy rivers, or rush into burning houses, for a child; the effect that occasionally allows a deeply bereaved person to make it through a funeral without a single tear. Some things are too terrible to grasp at once. Other things — naked, sputtering, indelible in their horror — are too terrible to really ever grasp at all. It is only later, in solitude, in memory, that the realisation have departed; when one looks around and finds oneself — quite to one's surprise — in an entirely different world.
(pg 329— henry's insistence that the snow is 'just going to kill all the flowers')
(pg 335— richard, high, being so touched by someone offering him More shit)
(pg 347— richard hungover and terribly shaken)
It was almost dark. There was a horrible, erratic humping in my chest, as if a large bird were trapped inside my ribcage and beating itself to death. Gasping, I lay back on my bed. (...)
(pg 347 & 348— absolutely laughing over how richard is just so confused about him crying)
(pg 349— everyone being embarrassed about the movies they fake saw)
(pg 355— charles being near tears and.)
"But how," said Charles, who was close to tears, "how could you possibly justify cold-blooded murder?"
Henry lit a cigarette. "I prefer to think of it," he had said, "as redistribution of matter."
(pg 367— this absolutely funny line about uta/ursula)
Besides being a house chairperson and a vigorous member of the student council, she was also the president of a leftist group off campus, and was always trying to mobilise the youth of Hampden in the face of crushing indifference.
(pg 380— henry being so bored by the 'nonsense' following bunny's death)
"(...) Honestly. Two hours. I don't know if I could've made myself go through with this if I'd known what nonsense we were letting ourselves in for."
(pg 389— francis and henry content)
"Someone would have to dig pretty deep to find that."
"Someone would only have to make two or three well-placed phone calls."
Just then the telephone rang.
"Oh, God," Francis wailed.
"Don't answer it," said Henry.
But Francis picked it up anyway, as I knew he would.
(pg 393— MORE francis and henry content)
He was running the water and I was on my way out when the phone rang.
It was Henry. "Oh," he said. "I'm sorry. I thought I dialed Francis."
"You did. Hold on a second." I put down the phone and called for him.
He came in in his trousers and undershirt, his face half-lathered, a razor in his hand. "Who is it?"
"Henry."
"Tell him I'm in the bath."
"He's in the bath," I said.
"He is not in the bath," said Henry. "He is standing in the room with you. I can hear him."
(pg 400— julian out here doing it for the aesthetics. the ball has not yet dropped)
The business had upset him, that I knew, but I also knew that there was something about the operatic sweep of the search which could not fail to appeal to him and that he was pleased, however obscurely, with the aesthetics of the thing.
Henry saw it, too. "Like something from Tolstoy, isn't it?" he remarked.
Julian looked over his shoulder, and I was startled to see that there was real delight on his face.
"Yes," he said. "Isn't it, though?"
(pg 414— richard's burnt coffee but henry......)
They hadn't been twenty feet from where I said, were even drinking the same muddy coffee from the same pot I'd made in the teachers' lounge. "That's odd," said Henry. "The first thing I thought of when I tasted that coffee was you."
"What do you mean?"
"It tasted strange. Burnt. Like your coffee."
(pg 419— bunny's kleptomania vice)
(pg 424— more suspicious charles and camilla)
(pg 437— the reporters genuinely being afraid of henry)
(pg 441— camilla crying and sciola and davenport being like: this is all your fault.)
(pg 445— the increasingly chaotic hysteria of the aftermath of bunny's death and everyone's weird ideas of faux mourning and real mourning)
(pg 446— richard comparing hampden's grieving to small children acting)
(pg 448— bunny being an impression to so many people, and having "touched people's lives" as he fulfilled a specific role and this is such a Striking scene to me because bunny sucked but richard was willing to be so distraught even amid all that irked him)
(pg 450— the description of tracy and richard's fondness for detached people after bunny's death)
(pg 458— mr corcoran's outbursts of grief and then Sudden recoveries left me Reeling but they rocked storytelling-wise)
(pg 473— henry and mr corcoran's plane story chaos)
He rambled on with this fraudulent recollection while Henry, pale and ill, endured his prods and backslaps as a well-trained dog will tolerate the pummeling of a rough child.
(pg 475— cloke and richard teaming up to steal henry meds)
(pg 481— just..... henry freaky but aesthetically so)
For a moment his face, pale and watchful as a ghost's, would be caught in the headlights and then, very gradually, it would slide back into the dark.
(pg 484— richard having been high in primary school: aka the equivalent of john mulaney's "now we don't have time to unpack all of that")
(pg 486— "one time uncle bunny called me a bastard" and the very high boys having to talk to mrs corcoran)
(pg 489— oh my WORD the fkn funeral scene where francis is waving at the wasp, camilla is taking off her shoe then charles KILLS it, so loudly)
(pg 495— Bun, I thought, oh, Bun, I'm sorry. *weeps*)
(pg 509— henry gardening)
(pg 514— the frantic hypochondria of francis slowly starting to suggest.... you guessed it! anxiety!!)
(pg 520— the broken mirror had me SHAKE)
(pg 541— the puzzle pieces clicking into place for charles and camilla. the internalised biphobia of charles and poor, poor francis. i wish he and richard could have ended up together but then i don't think any of them would have felt any good at all after)
(pg 558— the kosher strawberry drink that richard offers charles who, just minutes prior, was asleep in a SNAIL)
(pg 559— the fact that charles saw bunny fkn Sitting on the edge of the bed. right there.)
(pg 566— this line julian says after they talk about bunny's death)
"It does not do to be frightened of things about which you know nothing," he said. "You are like children. Afraid of the dark."
(pg 569— them all being worried that something Happened to camilla when she left with henry.....)
(pg 577— richard piecing things together and wondering; did henry make him do all of this? 'the alarm bell, richard')
(pg 582— the way tartt describes henry and camilla specifically as pluto and persephone,,,,, goodness me)
(pg 583— you know exactly the line. also richard's surprise at saying it so Obviously)
"Nothing," he said. "Except that my life, for the most part, has been very stale and colourless. Dead, I mean. The world has always been an empty place to me. I was incapable of enjoying even the simplest things. I felt dead in everything I did." He brushed the dirt from his hands. "But then it changed," he said. "The night I killed that man."
(pg 590— the fact that they suddenly realise the letter julian received WAS bunny's)
(pg 602— henry trying and failing to explain to a Subtly horrified julian. a wrecking scene)
(pg 603— "It is always hard for me to talk about Julian without romanticising him." what a book. what an author.)
(pg 605— this line about beauty and art and how convoluted, i just... here)
"There is nothing wrong with the love of Beauty. But Beauty— unless she is wed to something more meaningful— is always superficial. It is not that your Julian chooses solely to concentrate on certain, exalted things, it is that he chooses to ignore others equally as important."
(pg 611— CHARLES being the shocking intrusion to reveal julian really is gone)
(pg 614— henry's accusing julian of being cowardly, of only wanting to keep his name out of it, and that he loved him more than his own father. broke my heart in a super super weird way)
(pg 616— henry not liking charles' use of the word 'fuck' is such a.... feeling..... and continuing onto page 617 where richard has in-depth made it akin to his own parents and realised: no one is in control here. no one is flying this plane.)
(pg 622— charles' insistent worry of henry wanting to kill him)
(pg 623— charles' cat being a 'mummified, hissing bundle' made me laugh, grateful for it amid all of this weight)
(pg 633— richard realising no one is looking at him while he's shot Gets me)
(pg 635— camilla being kissed between the eyes. and henry. henry henry henry.)
(pg 641— richard being able to get out of his exams with his 'excellent excuse' and his 'ride to the underworld lit by shell and burger king')
(pg 645— sophie dearbold being 'frightened' by richard's early morning looks,,,,, i do wonder.)
(pg 649— priscilla. that's it.)
(pg 653— this line and also the notion they're all wondering if henry faked his death even though he couldn't possibly have)
"Well, you know what Julian would say," said Francis. "There are such things as ghosts. People everywhere have always known that. And we believe in them every bit as much as Homer did. Only now, we call them by different names. Memory. The unconscious."
"Do you mind if we change the subject?" Camilla said, quite suddenly. "Please?"
(pg 654 & pg 655— richard wanting to move and marry camilla. but her still being very in love with henry)
(pg 657— the 'closing montage' of the epilogue; the revelation that marion and brady decided to nickname their daughter bunny.... got me)
(pg 660— henry. henry henry henry)
"Are you happy here?" I said at last.
He considered this for a moment. "Not particularly," he said. "But you're not very happy where you are, either."
St Basil's, in Moscow. Chartres. Salisbury and Amiens. He glanced at his watch.
He turned from me and walked away. I watched his back receding down the long, gleaming hall.
final note: this book ruined me. if you have the stomach for some of the heavier themes in this book, i highly suggest giving it a read. yes, donna tartt is impeccable, yes, her writing has improved, but it is nonetheless spectacular. bye bye now :]
(edit: i'm glad to see so many people are relating to my unhinged concern and love for this novel alfhahskf)
(edit as of 14/01/22: FINALLY BOUGHT MY OWN COPY. now to maths to figure out which page is which.)

I just want fancy people to stop lecturing us. I'm not the one listening to right-wing tech bro stuff or rubbing hands together about guns. I'm not fangirling any killers, no matter how tragic or even relatable, but I'm also not interested in the veneration of some rich guy who ran an company that makes people's lives miserable and shortens them.
I'm not the one saying I want violence, I'm the one warning people that others are planning violence that's not really being reported by the media - and I'd like it to be prevented. I'm writing my reps and telling other people to write their reps. And I do this and push through like I've been told, through decades of being shamed into never speaking up against the "job creators" and pushing through.
So these fancy people need to shut up and stop telling me I have to feel bad about some fancy person I never even knew. I'm just not going to tune into any of it. I already unsubscribed Wendell Potter's substack immediately after seeing the phrase "violence has no place in our society" - not just because it's clueless, it is clueless - but because frankly I don't need these lectures and Potter shouldn't insult his audience like that. I also tuned out on a lot of others who felt the need to keep repeating violence is not the answer or violence has no place etc etc.
I get that some of these people are doing CYA, but seriously guys. The altar of politeness is a weapon you're turning on yourself. This genuflected curtsy that everyone does like they've been brainwashed is really terrible. I see it everywhere on a number of issues - people feeling the need to pre-undermine anything they're going to say by first embracing the opposition's shitty framing. If you are required to state something before you make a comment, you're already making the opposition's case for them. Am I the only one who sees this undermining everywhere? Nobody needs to address some crime in order to speak about the horrors of the private health insurance system in the U.S.
And besides, it is really easy to say violence is never desirable, while allowing that it absolutely is a part of every day society, and all of human history. You don't have to gaslight yourself and others, you really don't.
I keep thinking about the unhoused widow who had her belongings rousted and authorities took her late husband's ashes and threw them away and now she doesn't know where her husband's remains are - they said maybe he was taken to the dump. I have the ashes of 4 beloved cats and I can't imagine that. That was the remains of her husband. And I am haunted by this woman's story and the idea of that woman and her late husband being disrespected by people given such power - it makes me feel like I need to vomit at the violence of such a thing - and in a civilized society? Really?
The violence that is considered in fact completely legal to bring upon random people from merely suffering misfortunes - that rarely gets highlighted by the media hype machine because homeless people and others disadvantaged don't have PR teams. And that reality means that to say that "violence has no place in society" is incredibly preposterous, because the people saying it would absolutely say that the police have the right to violently restrain someone, and that people have right to fight back against an invasion from foreign military forces. When someone doesn't pay their rent, someone with a gun shows up eventually. What is that if not violence? Violence is absolutely given a place in society.
I'm sick of hearing this nonsense doublespeak frankly.
At almost the same time as the health insurance CEO was gunned down 2 children were shot in a murder suicide in California, and the day after in New York City, a migrant teen was stabbed to death by a group of men on the street. I did not hear about these things in the mainstream media or even the general discourse. I heard about one on Brittany Page’s youtube and the other on Robert Evans’s podcast.
Leave me alone about who or how or if I should grieve anyone. I just lost my 19 year old cat and I'm grieving my cat, and I don't have to grieve some rich guy I never knew and who wasn't nice to a lot of people. Give me a break. I just don't have to do that. And neither do you.
I really don't need to be lectured by fancy people about who I should grieve and what I should care about. I also don't need to be lectured about how "violence has no place in our society" (... war, executions, home evictions, homeless encampment demolitions, law enforcement use of force, medical decisions...??)

WIP Wednesday
Well, I haven't been able to get 3x16 out of my head. So. As much as I didn't need to start a new fic. I started a new fic. This is going to be double whump (Owen and TK). It spun from a conversation with @marjansmarwani about how TK would react to having an uncle and all of this. Here is a long (sorry) preview (because I couldn't decide what section to post).
He slumped a little and let out a long breath. He wanted a break. Maybe that vacation he kept promising he’d take. Maybe a return to California. Visit some people again. Maybe not by himself this time. Maybe…
His phone buzzed with an incoming video call. He huffed as he saw the name.
“Speak of the devil,” he mumbled to himself. He glanced around, making sure no one was around, cursing his normally beloved glass walls. He shook his head, but couldn’t help the small smile that crossed his face as he accepted the call.
“Owen! Hey, I wasn’t sure if you’d be able to pick up.”
Owen smiled a bit. “Yeah. You had good timing, Robert. Just got back from a call.” He tried to stifle a yawn, plastering on a smile for his brother.
Robert furrowed his brow. “Looks like a rough one. You look exhausted.”
Owen shrugged. “Par for the course.” He glanced away, looking out at the crew. Judd was across the hall in Tommy’s office. TK was there with them, probably helping his Captain with the reports from their last scene. It had been a rough call.
“Here if you need to talk,” Rober interjected.
“I know. I appreciate it.”
“You just don’t take me up on it much,” he deadpanned in return, giving Owen a knowing smile. “Look, I know you haven’t known me long. And I probably don’t have the right to try but–”
“You do,” Owen added gently. “Not about you. Promise.” He chewed on his lip. “It was a water rescue. I don’t have the best history with those.” He let out a long breath, not wanting to explain. Not wanting to really talk about his other brother. The one Robert wouldn’t know. Never could have.
Robert nodded, letting out a matching sigh. “Tyler?”
For a moment, Owen couldn’t help but think of both the Tylers in his life. The brother the water took on a hot day in California, and the son who nearly died because of the ice water in Texas of all places.
He cleared his throat. “Dad told you about him?”
“Some. He spoke of you both. Not a lot. But some.”
Owen hadn’t expected that. Not about Tyler. He knew Walter had spoken some of him. Helen knew who he was. Robert mentioned stories from when he was a kid. But this…
“Owen?”
“Hmm? Sorry, what were you saying?”
Robert looked worried before continuing. “I asked what happened on the call?”
Owen nodded. “Had to send my crew out into a lake. Group of teenagers racing boats. Just being dumb kids.” Like he had been. “Had to send out some of my crew to get them out.” He left it at that. Not wanting to share how TK had been the medic to go out. How everyone watched him. How he couldn’t stop picturing his son with that damned tube down his throat a year ago. How he couldn’t breathe for a moment as his son dove under the water to help.
“Jesus,” Robert gasped. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Thanks.” Owen forced another smile on his face. “So, what’s up with you? I didn’t think you were going to call til next week?”
“Yeah, know I said that, but wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Shoot.” Owen tried to relax back in his seat.
“Well, I was going to ask how you’d feel about me coming to Texas?” Owen stiffened for a moment. “It’s okay if you don’t want me to. It’s not a big deal. I have a business trip in San Antonio next week. I thought maybe it could be nice to drive up to see you. Or meet half way. Or–”
“Yeah. Maybe,” Owen agreed. He glanced up again, seeing TK walking toward his office. “Hey, I’ve gotta go, Rob. Can you let me look at my schedule and give you a call back? I’ll see if I can find a day to come to San Antonio or a stop half way.” He tried to rush off the call. TK was stepping toward his office, knocking on the door and pushing it open out of habit. Owen never really cared if he just came in. But, he wasn’t ready to tell him about this. To dump all this onto his son.
“Sure, Owen. Just call.”
“I will. Talk soon.” He clicked off the call and turned his phone face down. “Hey son.” He forced that smile once again, pushing down the guilt he felt for both TK and his brother. Both his brothers.
“Hey dad,” TK smiled, much more genuinely that Owen and took a seat across from his desk. “Who was that on the phone? They sounded familiar.”
Owen sighed. “No one you know, buddy. Just an old friend.” He pushed back from his desk and walked around to TK, cupping the back of his neck. “Get warmed up after that last call?”
TK laughed. “Yeah. I think Nancy practically followed me around with towels and thermometers until Tommy finally came to my rescue.”
Owen huffed a laugh at that, patting TK on the back. He leaned back against his desk. “She worries about you.”
“I know.” TK shrugged and slumped into the chair.
“So, did you come in here to complain about your partner looking out for you health? Or…”
“I didn’t come in to bitch about, Nancy,” TK laughed. “Wanted to see if you were still good for dinner tomorrow? I know things have been so busy lately and we haven’t really had a chance to hang out. But I’d like to. If you can.”
“Of course, kid. I’ll drop you off back at yours once we’re done. We can go anywhere you want. After shift.”
“Seriously? Anywhere?” He raised an eyebrow. “Even places that have carbs and sodium and–”
“Okay, anywhere within reason.” Owen held his hands up in defeat, a real smile finally coming on his face.
God he loved his kid.

It saddens me to see the loss of such a positive influence in the designer toy world. I’ll never forget what you did for me & our fun conversations.🙏Rest in peace my friend! ………Yesterday’s repost from @lulubell_toys • The world lost a legend today. 🌹 With heavy heart I share that Connell Ray Little (@phuntsy) left our world early this morning peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by friends. He was 81 years young. ********************************Thank you to everyone who shared a photo, memory or left a comment for #phuntsyridesforever The sheer amount of love was surely a highlight in Connell’s final days. He was truly touched and grateful for everyone he’d come to meet in this world. Immense gratitude to @dollar_slice_bootlegs @iron_paw @uhohtoys @clearwithguts for driving out from California to join their beloved friend on his final journey. Your friendships and commpassion were a beautiful and inspiring thing to witness. I appreciate the moral support on this journey as well. You guys are all amazing humans. Thank you so much to @manic_1mag3s for being here to support Connell in his final days as well as tremendous personal hand holding throughout. To witness Robert capturing Connell so beautifully in one final shoot is a memory I will always treasure. Connell had very little energy that day, but sprang into life for the camera. Robert shot no more than 6 photos I believe, the entire scene was amazing to witness. I’ll let Robert share that story when he’s ready. Thank you @thedevilskaiju for being my rock, sleepover buddy, Mr. Mom, and therapist all in one. David and Connell shared many sofubi laughs over the last couple weeks that we will always treasure. And to @mydogeatspecans , thank you and @pricklynopales for being such guiding lights during such a difficult time. You brought so much grace and comfort to not only Connell but us all. All of these people and more were Connell’s family. He truly loved this community, thank you to all for being such a part of his life. Thank you @phuntsy for all you gave to all of ours. No one will ever fill those maroon velvet sneakers of yours. Until you ride again 🫶🏻 #phuntsyridesforever #rip #spaceknightconnell https://www.instagram.com/p/CnE8MzRr1TZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
