Waiting... (2005)
My rating: 2/10
Another one of those workplace "comedies" that basically consist of the worst characters ever conceived by human or any other minds having mind-numbingly inane conversations. And because it's 2005, these conversations are liberally peppered with slurs.
Kevin Smith seems like a nice guy, but he has a lot to answer for.

Tag (2018)
I went to see Tag again to ensure I was in my right mind the first time. Yes, this comedy, based around a children’s playground game really is that funny. A picture that will endure the ages? Probably not, and it isn’t as good as Game Night from earlier this year, but it's a blast while it lasts.
Based on a true story, best friends Hoagie (Ed Helms), Bob (Jon Hamm), Chilli (Jake Johnson), Kevin (Hannibal Buress), and Jerry (Jeremy Renner) have been playing the same game of tag for thirty years. Every May, they do whatever it takes to make each other 'it' but despite the others’ best efforts, Jerry has never been tagged. When they learn he's getting married, and that this will be his last year playing, his friends decide the wedding will be the perfect opportunity (and their last chance) to get him.
It sounds as if the boys are about to ruin Jerry's wedding, but that's because you don't understand the stakes. Much of the film's comedy comes from how seriously everybody takes the game. They’re dressing up in costumes, hiding in bushes, setting up traps, carefully planning their schedules to ambush their target, etc. These friends take Tag to a level children only dream of, which is hilarious... particularly when their efforts fall flat and they wind up injuring themselves. Even when you think you've seen it all, you haven't seen how far Jerry will go to avoid being tagged. His end of May wedding? it REALLY feels like a dare.
That’s only partially what this vulgar, R-Rated comedy is about. Throughout the story, the friends catch up on what's happened since they last saw each other, joke around, and reminisce about the good times. You or I may not play with them, but we all have that one thing, that ritual, game or activity that forms a bond between longtime friends. If you're not in the circle, you just don't get it. That's what Tag is really about. If Jerry quits, it means firstly that he is better than them, which is embarrassing enough, but also that there won't be anything to keep them together anymore. It'd be a shame too, as these actors play off each other very well. You can feel their friendship even in the nasty remarks they toss at each other.
When they're not taking things way too far (it happens more than once), every character (even the sides) are so emotionally invested in their traditional game, it becomes contagious. And.. sometimes you just want to see people get unexpectedly but deservedly hit on the head. You'll be hard-pressed to keep yourself from wanting to join into this game of Tag. If you do, stick around for the end credits, which feature an amusing music video by the leads. (Theatrical version on the big screen, June 20, 2018)

MOVIE REVIEW: Tag
For years a group of friends having been playing the longest game of Tag ever, as they grow into their forties they keep up the game during the month of May. One friend has never been tagged, he’s the ninja of the friends and is determined in the year he’s finally getting married to keep his perfect marriage. The four other members agree that they won’t spoil his wedding but will tag him. This…

#TagMovie - Recap/ Review (with Spoilers)
Tag is probably one of the few comedy movies, this year anyway, which isn’t just about the jokes but also about the genuine friendship between its leads. (more…)

The Burnt City continues to evolve
I’m now six shows in and the show is definitely growing on me, with provisos. I’m not sure how much more I can say without spoilers, so proceed at your own risk if you haven’t seen the show or only part of it. [Might be spoilers from here on]
My sixth show was something of a turning point. Apart from having Miranda’s 1:1 as the border guard (I did want to see her in this role and she doesn't disappoint, moving between fierce military loyalty and painful anguish at what she's participated in), I also finally found a loop I think I can fall in love with and it’s not at all the one I expected. Then I brained myself coming out of one of the greenhouses, which is probably karma. I do think there are some serious safety issues to be addressed in the building, but I thought the same about Sleep No More and I doubt anything will change until there’s a major incident.
Anyway, much to my surprise the character I found myself drawn to was Penthesilea Macaria* (Polyxena’s lover). Leal was playing her last night (what an expressive face she has!), so I can’t comment on how other performers approach the role, but Leal managed to capture the sincerity of her affection for her lover (at one point indulging in a tender solo sequence in which she folded over some fabric reciting, “she loves me, she loves me not”). There’s an almost childlike tenderness between her and Polyxena, and the agony and pain she feels after her lover’s death is utterly heartbreaking. Just as it is with Hecuba, but in a different way. Unfortunately Leal, like most of the PD newcomers, didn't do the 1:1 so I was unable to get any further insight into the depth of her character. But perhaps it wouldn’t have added anything - Iphigenia’s didn’t. I also caught a brief glimpse of a couple of characters I would want to prioritise in future visits. Dafni’s Campe looks delightfully mischievous (shades perhaps of the PA in TDM), Stephanie’s maid is an enticing combination of distressed and self-indulgent, according to the situation, and Artemis, Cronos and Persephone are loops that will definitely be worth returning to. I’ve already tried to follow Artemis and Persephone but my goodness, are they slippery.
In addition, the Troy area is starting to have the same vibe as the McKittrick or even parts of Temple Studios. The network of rooms and corridors is no longer entirely confusing and I’m starting to have a better feel for the different mini-biomes in the area (however I still think they could do with more separation from each other, one disadvantage of the space being on only two floors). It’s easy to move from one part to another, and the production design is starting to feel holistic, especially now a few elements have been added.
There seems to be much more to Troy than Mycenae, which continues to disappoint. The space is way too broad, the ‘hedgehogs’ (though well used in the sacrifice sequence) dominate the area, robbing it of the detail which is so uniquely PD. The Schliemann area is under-used, the forest too small (unlike the forest in SNM which is also small but feels like a space you can get lost in), the sandy area has no obvious purpose, and even the large table area (I refuse to reference P*tin) seems bare and under-decorated. Iphigenia’s dressing room is exactly the sort of thing we would expect from PD and the shower area works well too. Couldn’t they have filled the intervening space with something more than a big table? This is not to take away from the fine performances that happen on that table, it’s just that there was surely some way to divide up the space so it was just more... well, interesting. There’s obviously some kind of creative decision going into this that I can’t fathom, but it’s put me right off Mycenae. Which is a shame, as there are a lot of things to like performance-wise, like ‘Sing Sing Sing’ and Agamemnon’s death.
(Incidentally, I’ve noticed the main hall in Mycenae is carpeted. This robs it of much of the sensation that it’s a battlefield. It feels like an exhibition centre or an airport lounge. A barer floor would have been more congruent with the intention, surely? Even plastic linoleum would have been better. I also think the main staircase and the upper balcony feel too plain - in the previous productions the bare stairwells didn’t matter because they were out of sight of the main set, and generally only used briefly.)
I suppose the TLDR is that Troy feels like a ‘world’ and Mycenae doesn’t. To me, at least.
But enough negativity, except perhaps to note that the eye-watering ticket prices discourage much further attendance. I certainly don’t have any more shows booked at the moment. But at least I now feel I have something that I yearn to go back to, unlike Kabeiroi which just made me want to walk away in disgust. At last this is actually feeling like the Punchdrunk shows which have given me weird dreams, happy memories and aching nostalgia.
[*Edit: there was no official cast/character list when I wrote this post. We were guessing who was who and Penthesilea seemed the most likely choice. Then the list was published and the mystery solved. (We also thought the Watchman was Odysseus.)]

“Waiting” (2005)
R, 94 minutes, directed by Rob MCkittrick, written by Rob McKittrick
Stream on Netflix as of 27 November 2020 or rent digitally on YouTube.
Notable performers: This movie has Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, Justin Long. Wendie Malick shows up! David Koechner!
Why you should watch it in general: You need a workplace comedy to breakup the monotony of your months and months of working from home.
Why you should watch it while you’re stuck at home: It’ll make you glad you haven’ been to a restaurant in like 9 months.
Is it part of a franchise: No.
Have I seen it before: Yes, once (and I didn’t re-watch it before posting about it, but it has linger in my brain as one fo those weird raunchy comedies that is still so weirdly relatable).
Does the trailer do it justice: Yeah.
This movie is definitely not for everybody. But, if you’re the kind of person who appreciated mid-00s comedy, particularly the kind that incorporate super-gross-out raunchy stuff (the trailer will definitely tell you what you’re in for in that category), maybe break up your long weekend with “Waiting”.

Welcome back, suckers, and by suckers I mean me. I skipped writing a recap of my last post, and figured I’d be away for a while with the fall price hike due to kick in soon. But all it takes is the notification that Emily Terndrup has been spotted as Agnes, and Mia Mountain as the matron, and all my feeble self-control goes to hell.
I got hosed, which serves me right. Insane audience, not many of my favorites around. I think I’m gonna swear off Mondays for a while, since the tourists were the most aggressive, clueless, and downright belligerent I’ve ever experienced.
Ingrid/Danvers again, and I stuck with her through a full loop. I’m so glad she’s back. The more I do this the more I realize that very often the 1:1 is among the least interesting parts of each character’s story. I’ve been thinking a lot about Danvers, in her book, film, and show iterations. She’s terrified of change, and of time passing. That’s why she covers the clocks and sets up the metronome. Lady Macbeth is definitely the sexual aggressor in their scene together, coercing her to drug Duncan’s drink the same way she uses sex to coerce her husband. I think Danvers’ obsession with Rebecca/Lady MB isn’t so much an obsession with the woman as it is with the past. I guess that might also be why she reacts so negatively to Lady Macduff - pregnancy is about the biggest change there is, and as Peter Griffin once said, THE WORLD’S CHANGING AROUND ME AND I’M MAD AND SCARED. I have more sympathy for the old girl than I used to.
I followed the taxidermist for a while, and watching him interact with Fulton and the barman, especially coming off a loop with Danvers who is so obsessed with precision and order, I realized that none of the McKittrick characters are particularly good at their jobs, are they? Fulton leaves his store in the middle of the day and gets robbed, the barman lets someone get killed in his speakeasy, the nurse eats chalk, the porter gets bullied, and the taxidermist spends twenty minutes stacking what looked like crocodile skulls on his counter.
Assaf is a very friendly taxidermist - waves hello to the barman every time he sees him.
Is it a new thing for the taxidermist to have a fifth floor solo, or have I just been so stuck in my ways all these years that there’s still stuff I haven’t seen?!
He has a piece of paper with MACDUFF, LADY MACDUFF, AND MACDUFF HEIR all crossed out, but who knows what the fuck that portends.
Pinwheels and peppermints are emphatically NOT the same thing. Be smarter than I was.
I hung around with Danvers and the porter at the end of the show, which I loved to do. She broke a piece of toast into tiny pieces and threw them at him like George throwing snapdragons at Martha. They have a very interesting relationship - like Kronk and Yzma.
God save us from straight couples seeing the show for the first time, and that’s all I have to say about that.
xoxo
