Ok so this all starts with THIS

FEAST YOUR EYES LADIES, LADS, AND GENTLEFOLK ON THE ONLY PIECE OF INFORMATION IN ALL OF HYRULE CONCERNING DISTANCE AND TIME.

Impa states that it would take you half a day, about 12 hours, to travel from Kakariko Village to the depicted 13th memory, which is at Ash Swamp by Fort Hateno.

Now here is where I took this information. I took it to

objmap.zeldamods.org

A fantastic online Botw map resource with tons of features like finding specific objects, and highlighting areas, and placing pins, and the basics of showing the locations of everything like shrines and korok seeds and all that.

BUT the thing that we care about today is this ability, here:

DRAW!

With those widgets on the right, I can specifically mark lines and shapes and the website will give me the distance of it in meters!

“But Kip, if the map already gives you the distance of anything you want then isn’t this entire post pointless?” Ashshshshshhshh no, shut the fuck up, shush shut, no, stop, silence, I am high on caffeine and I haven’t slept for two days. No.

As great as the map is, the exact ratio isn’t the best. Like, it tells me that the length of Hyrule is only 10km, or 6.2 miles.

I wager that realistically, Hyrule would be a bit bigger than that. And THAT, is where I come in. Or, more specifically, Impa.

Impa states that it takes 12 hours to travel from Kakariko to Fort Hateno. (I am saying Fort Hateno and not Ash Swamp because I am going of the nearest prominent landmark location near the 13th memory, and I highly doubt that Impa knew the exactly square foot patch of dirt that Link needed to stand on to activate his memory)

According to Google, it takes around 10 to 12 minutes to walk a kilometer. (I am assuming Impa was referring to walking and not riding, because I feel like she would have said, “You should be able to get there in half a day’s ride” or something of the sort. So, walking it is)

So:

12 hours divided by 12 minutes

(Which is 720 minutes / 12 minutes)

gives us

The distance between Fort Hateno and Kakariko village is 60 kilometers.

Badabing badaboom, great job! We did it. BUT NOW this is where our handy dandy online object map comes in.

So while this map doesn’t give me distances that are exactly to my liking, it DOES give me a measuring means that will stay consistent. SO! As you can see, the map says Kakariko to Fort Hateno is 1.89km. (And just to be safe, I also did the distance exactly to the point of the 13th memory as shown in Impa’s picture, which came out to 1.55km. But! It’s doesn’t matter anyhow, because) We’re going to round this to 2km for the sake of my sanity because surprise surprise! I actually suck at, and hate, math.

So the map says Kakariko to Fort Hateno is 2 kilometers, but we know that in real life, the distance is actually 60 kilometers. So, if you want to use this object map effectively, you have to make a means of converting the “false” measurements, (which I will be refering to as “zelda” (kilo)meters, or zm/zkm) from the actual ones.

So THIS is what I fucking did oh my god help me it took me way too long even though it was really simple in hindsight I was just stupid and spent two hours trying to get the ratio equations right when really all I had to do was divide, it was a whole thing, anyhow, read away.

The map of Hyrule measures roughly 10zkm (length) by 8zkm (height) [typo, I meant width] giving it an area of 80 square zkm.

SO ARMED WITH THIS NEW KNOWLEDGE, you can now use this map to measure whatever you want, and by converting 1zm to 30 meters, you can get accurate result as to what that distance is.

Chart the roads, measure the rivers, the map even gives area tools for polygons, squares, and circles! This entire post was born out of a desire to see how long the characters in my fic should rest for when travel between different stables.

Now before anyone asks, yes! 2400 square kilometers is fairly small. That’s around 930 square miles. I believe even Wales is more than three times bigger than that. BUT! Considering Hyrule is a medieval kingdom that’s actually pretty sizable considering the average size of a Kingdom was 100 to 900 square kilometers.

And juuuust to double check, I ran the size though a Medievil Demographics generator, and 2400 (under the conditions of Fertile Land with 64% of the land being arable since I figured roughly 46% for lakes, the ocean, plus unusable land was more than enough to cover the Hebra, Death Mountain, and the Gerudo Desert. Which honestly is even MORE generous considering there are races that occupy these areas, but I digress) This still gives Hyrule Kingdom a good population of 108,000 people! Before the Calamity when all of its villages were up and occupied, of course. So the area is definitely more than enough, and can still give Link a more realistic amount of time to travel between areas (when you add eating and rest of course. Don’t make my guy walk for 10 hours straight from the Great Plateau to Hebra D: plz)

TL;DR: Hyrule is 2400 square kilometers; use the map, plus the conversion 1 zelda meter to 30 meters to measure anything you want; I am tired

Quick Edit: Please note that this conversion is for the purposes of people out there who need more realistic means of measuring distances for larger scale travel and such, like for writing fic journeys, or dnd campaigns. This conversion isn’t the best for smaller scale measure like buildings and such (EX: I’ve checked with buildings in Castle Town and the Coliseum, and they come out much too big, just a symptom of game design ratios not being perfect since it’s hard to balance consistent measurements and the immersion and plan a creator has for their game world!) So if you are measuring those smaller entities using the linked map, just stick with the given zelda meters! (EX: The Coliseum radius in zelda meters matches up nicely with the real world Roman Colosseum, beating it out by a few dozen meters!)

Also if you are a true believer in the interpretation of Impa’s dialogue as “half the amount of daylight hours,” see the reblogs!

Ballad of the Prince and the Fox Spirit - what actually happened

Yesterday I have posted a Hualian AU ballad, telling the story from the pov of common folk.

But have you wondered what atually happened back them? How much of the ballad is truth, and how much of the story had gotten lost across the years?

Imagine, that long, long before the actual event of the ballad, little Lianlian had once found a lost an injured fox cub, that probably got lost from its family, or perhaps it just had no one left. Lianlian had brought it home and for a while he nurtured it, before his parents found out, and had the little fox carried out into the forest, bcs it's a wild animal after all, and who knows - it might even be a cunning fox spirit! Lianlian shouldn't be so reckless!

Many years after, when Xie Lian had long reached adulthood, people throughout the region begin to tell stories about a devious, malefic fox spirit, lurking in the forest, known as Crimson Rain Sought Flower, and he's said to be rich and immensely powerful.

Even though nobody would admit it outloud, many people actually seek the spirit out, making strange deals for riches, fortune, or influence, and amongst those people is also Xie Lian's father.

The pact with the fox demon had truly brought their family fortune beyond measure, yet just as the ballad says, when the day had come for him to pay up, that all had changed.

Nobody actually knows what the king had promised the spirit, but when the fox came to collect, the king hd become enraged and had the spirit thrown out, in front of the eyes of the whole court. An unwise decision.

Xie Lian was present to see everything that happened. He rushed after the spirit, and caught him just before the palace gate. There, at the mouth of the busy street, he fell to his knees in front of the spirit, and begged forgiveness for how his father treated him.

Hua Cheng was silent for a long time, actually at loss of words. When he regained his senses, he bent down, and caught the prince by his elbows, to bring him up.

"I don't want an apology from you," he said.

Not long after that, the kindgom was befallen by war and plague, and many had believed, that it's the wrath of the fox spirit.

The royal family had been reduced to live in poverty, and the only thing of value, that they had left was the prince himself. The only hope was to find a suitable spouse, a daughter of merchant or a nobleman, that would provide at least enough to ensure they have food to eat and a place to live. But which daughter would want a former prince of a fallen kingdom?

Yet, who would have thought that one day, a young man, donning red robes, wonders into the royal family's household to ask for the prince's hand, in return for enough riches to keep the royal provided for a lifetime.

Perhaps it was a test, perhaps Hua Cheng wanted to see, whether the king would give out his gracious into the hands of a stranger. But Xie Lian is willing to make a sacrifice for the good of his family, and willing to accept this arranged marriage, no matter if the stranger will treat him like no more than a concubine, a toy to his lustful whims... he would endure it, as long as his family is provided for.

And thus the prince's fate is sealed.

Yet, soon after they set on the way to the stranger's residence, Xie Lian realizes, that something isn't out right. Instead of traveling to the nearest kingdom by the main road, they soon make a turn and enter the forest. It is soon clear, that this stranger, San Lang, is not taking him to any faraway city, but instead somewhere, where no human ever ventured.

He turns towards San Lang with a question, but that question dies on his lips the moment he sees; the moment they entered the forest, the stranger had shed his disguise and now adorned a pair of pointy ears and a long red tail.

As if sensing his glence, San Lang slightly turned his head towards him. The thin lips spread into a smile, revealing a sharp fang.

It was now that the prince had finally recognized him.

In a way it made sense; Xie Lian originally came to the conclusion that this man wanted him for pleasure, yet now it seemed more likely it was out of spite, putting the king in the situation where he had to choose between his life and his son.

It would make sense, Xie Lian thought, and his heart grew heavier. With this new realization, it would be silly of him to expect anything more than ruthlessness and perhaps even cruelty from the hands of his now husband. Perhaps somewhere at the end of their path there's a dark, cold dungeon, awaiting him.

But who would have thought, that what lied beyond the trees, ar the very heart of the dark forest was the opposite.

The prince had expected the worst fate from the hands od the fox spirit. To his surprise, instead of a cold dungeon, he was greeted with lavish rooms and chambers at his disposal, and instead of ruthlessness and cruelty, he was met with nothing but gentleness and affection.

But that is of course something, that only a handful of people know about. In the eyes of public, that very day, the prince had vanished from the face of earth, leaving behind nothing but a ballad, telling the tale of his tragic fate...

KH-OC Week 2022 - Day 4 Package

I didn’t really have anything in mind for ‘Determination’; so I have decided to address the alphabet prompt of ‘Nobody’ instead.

The following written piece is another fiction (T1). Enjoy an alternate event timeline of KH-CoM where Karla’s nobody is used to try and drag Riku into the darkness by… You know who; think, “darkness”:

Start Writing

After the events of KH1, after Sora, Riku, Donald, Goofy and Mickey had sealed the Door to Darkness, Ansem was livid. He was livid that he could have neither Sora or Riku for the darkness, especially after all he had done under the act of possessing Riku for his own gain. It took a while for Ansem’s headache to wear off from being exposed to so much light, but when he was able to think clearly again, he was back to plotting and scheming.

The untold character that Kingdom Hearts never mentioned was Karla. She was Riku’s light, but she failed to keep Riku in the light as Ansem had separated them. Sora found her lying on the exterior front lower balcony of the Hollow Bastion castle as Riku was taken in by Ansem. So Karla remained with Sora for the rest of his adventure, and along with Donald and Goofy, helped Sora take out Ansem. In the end, she was reunited with Riku, and as her promise to ‘make it up’ to him, she chose to be on his side when Kindgom Hearts had been sealed. Riku warned her of the darkness she would be susceptible to, but this didn’t phase her.

This result is what Ansem was reeling over. “Curse that wretched girl”, Ansem remarked to himself. “If she hadn’t crossed paths with Sora, she wouldn’t have found her way back to the light. She would have been in darkness just like… Riku… He got away”. Ansem was now puffing and panting from his ow anger. “You are a difficult one to sway. And Riku… I almost had you to the darkness…”.

– Time skip –

With Riku having descended a few floors of Castle Oblivion, Ansem had failed to tempt him into the darkness. Mickey wasn’t yet present, but it was Karla that was the problem. Riku wasn’t alone, and so talking with Karla was a way to help him not be deceived by the false voices being Ansem… And the very own replica of Riku that was created. Every time Ansem would beg Riku to enter into the darkness, Karla would always say to him, “You’re not going to go down that road again, right?”, and sometimes also, “you swore not to”. She would always remind Riku of the consequences if he gave in, and what that would mean for Sora and Kairi as they were the most dear to Riku. Sometimes Riku accepted what Karla said, and other times she would be annoying about it. Riku would reassure her, “You don’t have to worry about me going down that path again. Mickey’s watching over us. And I’ve learnt my lesson”.

As Riku and Karla went to complete the seventh world, Ansem decided to go to Twilight Town to see if he could find a way to affect Karla’s ability to help Riku. Ansem was one version of Xehanort’s whole, but there was another version, being Xemnas, who was responsible for the nobodies and the formation of Organisation XIII. One of the backup members that Xemnas had recruited was in-fact Karla’s nobody, Xalkra. She was the version of Karla with vast amounts of depression, occasional temper tantrums, and a sneaky and cunning nature. Xemnas had arranged to meet Ansem outside the mansion. With the two crossed paths at the gate, Xemnas had responded to Ansem’s complaints about Riku. “I do have this one girl that I think may be the answer”, said Xemnas, as he pointed to Ansem’s heart. “Another pawn of the darkness?”, asked Ansem. “Potentially”, answered Xemnas. Xemnas continued, “If Riku has someone to always keep him in check and show unconditional loyalty, then perhaps you need someone of the same kind for our side”. Ansem growled as he snapped at Xemnas, “I don’t need to be kept in check”. Xemnas took a slight step back as he realised his verbal mistake. “I meant the part of loyalty. Someone who’s there for your beck and call, not to dissuade Riku, but to dissuade Karla and keep her away from him, or have her utterly destroyed for any usefulness towards that keyblade wielder”.

Ansem now have a one-sided smirk, and when he did so, Xemnas had signalled to the trees. Out of the forest came a figure in a black coat, but none of the features could be identified. “Are you the one that’s supposed to be helping me get rid of Riku’s companion?”. The coat lifted off to reveal a look-a-like of Karla, only her nose was more pointy, and her cheek bones were more sharp. As Karla had endless love for her nobody, she too could co-exist like Roxas with Sora, but Xalkra didn’t love Karla back, which is why Xalkra was in her position within the Organisations back up ranks.

“I mean I could do that, but I’m Xemnas’ apprentice, so that wouldn’t be happening, unless…”. Xemnas interrupted Xalkra, “You’re with Ansem now”. Ansem smirked again, “She’s definitely obedient. She’ll make for a great companion on the side of darkness, and hopefully she can teach Riku a thing or two about showing his loyalty to the darkness”. As Xalkra was slightly shorter than Xemnas and Ansem, she looked up at Ansem and screwed her nose at him. “What?”, asked Ansem. “I don’t like change”, responded Xalkra. “Oh you will like change when you find out who your somebody is paired with”, said Ansem. Just as Riku warmed up to Karla on the road to Castle Oblivion, Ansem became smitten with Xalkra, but at a much quicker pace, almost immediately really.

– Time Skip –

On a floor of Castle Oblivion where one of the main Organisation was to be expected, a hooded figure of a different size showed up. The figure was smaller and slightly more dainty. Riku got right in front of Karla and told her to stay back. Riku continued, “I smell darkness, but it’s not Ansem, or my replica”. I look at up at the back of Riku as I quietly said, “then…?”. And then the figure lifted its hood to reveal Xalkra to us. “Xalkra!? You look worse for wear than the last time. What happened?”. Xalkra gained an evil glint in her eye, paused, and then laughed. “What happened… What happened?!”, teased Xalkra, “I’ve stayed the same, it’s just that you’ve become soft and weak. You gave in to the darkness by going through that door with Riku. If you were of the light, you would have resisted temptation”. Karla responded, “Right… As if I would have allowed Riku to go alone again, and he would be susceptible to whatever tricks you and the rest of the Organisation had up their sleeves”. Xalkra blinked heavily and then spoke, “The Organisation? I’m taking a break from them for a little while”. Which caused Karla to ask the question, “Well if you’re having a break, then why are you here tormenting us? Are you perhaps simply jealous of the place Riku and I are at?”. Xalkra had her arms folded, and then shook her head. “Then what it is that you want!?”, interrupted Riku, beginning to get frustrated with Xalkra’s dodging and double-speak. “I just want my somebody and I to be at a meeting of the minds, and I’d say to for she and I to be at a meeting of the minds, we need to speak to each other in isolation… Without a third party getting involved”. Karla screwed up her face as Xalkra as she then reasoned, “You always want my help, but then when I’m ready to give it to you. You never accept it, and rather throw it back into my face”. Xalkra became outraged, “Your face!? You throw gestures back into my face! Out out of all the nobodies and their somebodies out there, I have the most ungrateful somebody of all time!”.

Karla continued, “The most ungrateful? I allowed you to be whole and remain alongside me, rather than banishing you back into nothing when I became one again. I suggest we finish this here, and you let Riku and I be on our way”. Xalkra resisted and became stroppy, “No! I want answers! Answers for why you refuse to see things my way! And Riku can’t help you this time”. That’s when Xalkra summoned her keyblade and created a barrier around me, which began to shrink and send me to the boss arena, leaving Riku behind in Castle Oblivion.

After the fight with Xalkra, both her and Karla had returned to the room in Castle Oblivion where they had departed from. At the sight of Karla walking back to Riku, Xalkra began crying. Through her blubbering, Xalkra stated, “No! It wasn’t meant to be this way! I wanted answers! Why am I always the victim!? Why are you the one to constantly break our union of friendship, Karla?”. As Xalkra opened a dark portal to leave, Riku said, “Because she doesn’t need ties to the darkness, and neither do I”. A slight sniffle from Xalkra was heard as the portal closed. With the portal finally gone, Riku asked Karla, “Is she always this unstable?”. Karla simply shrugged her shoulders in return. Riku added, “She doesn’t make for a convincing friend”.

Meanwhile, Xalkra’s face was flooded with tears as she came through the portal, into where Ansem was waiting for her return. “Was Karla’s light too strong for you?”, asked Ansem. “Yes…”, sniffled Xalkra, “She doesn’t see things my way at all”. At first, Ansem hit his head on the wall as he thought that Xalkra would be more of a hindrance then a help, but then it looked like he had an idea. Ansem proposed, “Keep showing up to those two and pestering them constantly. Expose Karla’s weaknesses by making her angry and volatile, and then maybe Riku will turn away from her and leave her behind, leaving him ripe for the taking”.

Ansem then put a finger on his chin, “However, we do need to teach you how to be stronger, and to be more immune the light”. Xalkra asked, “What do you have in mind?”. Ansem answered, “Our first date, a dinner in the depths of Traverse of Town… A banquet of Italian cuisine laced in darkness”.

As my packages usually contain more than 1 work, I was really struggling for Day 4. But then… I had this dream on AUG 3 (the night before last), and it literally showed me as a nobody, in Castle Oblivion, wielding a keyblade! I cannot remember anything else about this dream except the look of the keyblade itself, and the name of it.

The dream ended up calling the keyblade “Nobody’s Wrath“, but I thought that wrath was a bit of an extreme emotion for a nobody, and is more expected from a heartless enemy or someone like Xehanort. So when I woke up, I decided to change the name of this keyblade to “Nobody’s Envy“, which I think has a lot more meanings than one. I have drawn the keyblade to the best of my memory recall:

I've got some very exciting things lined up for Day 7. What I've noticed is that KH-OC Week has naturally caused some changes to my lore in-dream and therefore fictionally as well; so those changes will be listed as Special/Bonus Content on the last day.
