PAPER MOON
"Well, don't the world have a wild imagination."
ROAD MOVIES ARC movie 3
PAPER MOON (1973)
SEPTEMBER 15, 2024
I've never managed to see this apparently beloved Peter Bogdanovich movie, made only two years after his breakthrough second film, The Last Picture Show, mostly because it seemed like it might be just a little too... cute? Starring real life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neal (who became the youngest-ever Oscar winner for this performance) in the tale of two con artists hustling during the Great Depression, it has the trappings of a movie that might substitute sentimentality for substance. But the Criterion Collection (whose endorsement carries great weight for me) is releasing it in November, and Time Out's review says "Modern cynicism and efficient acting hold the potential mushiness at bay, and the pair's picaresque odyssey through the Kansas dustbowl, during which they vie for control over their increasingly bizarre partnership, is admirably served by Laszlo Kovacs' marvellous monochrome camerawork. After Targets and The Last Picture Show, Bogdanovich's best movie." Okay... sold. Let's give it a look on Sunday!
"I wonder how many moviegoers will be prepared for the astonishing confidence and depth that Tatum [O'Neal] brings to what’s really the starring role. I’d heard about how good she was supposed to be, but I nevertheless expected a kind of clever cuteness, like we got from Shirley Temple or young Elizabeth Taylor. Not at all... [she] creates a character out of thin air, makes us watch her every moment." -Roger Ebert [4 stars]
"A charming mixture of Hawksian comedy and Fordian lyricism imbues Bogdanovich's not-too-sentimental meeting-cute between a conman (Ryan O'Neal) busy bamboozling widows into buying bibles during the Depression, and the 9-year-old wily brat who may or may not be his daughter." -Time Out
7:30 trailers 7:35 short film 7:45 - 9:27 Paper Moon

The constant use of Eddie as a vessel for their violent fantasies just feels kinda racist but in a vague way that I can’t quite articulate but like we live in a time when one of the major candidates for the US presidency and his goons are constantly talking about the inherent violence of Latino men so something about the constant jokes about Eddie beating up or killing Tommy when that’s not really in line with Eddie’s character is just… 🚩🚩🚩
#disk horse#just beyond it being a disrespect to his character#and how the fight club arc actually affected him#for people that fixate on a single line during the Daniel arc they sure did forget ‘I’ve been down that road before don’t recommend it’

lloyd 'survived on one meal per day for years' frontera would absolutely see sharing food as a love language and javier 'lived in the streets for months as a child' asrahan would be fluent in it
i do believe there is a point in their lives where they both heal from the trauma of going through severe food insecurity but neither of them ever quite really forget just how important food can be. and when the other shares their food with them, they appreciate it as the show of affection it was meant to be
#i talk a lot <3#tged#the greatest estate developer#lloyd frontera#javier asrahan#i've talked before about food as a love language in tged which mostly affects the relationship between marbella and lloyd#but i do think it would bleed over to other aspects in lloyd's life#and there's a scene in the hell arc where javier figures out something is wrong because lloyd complains about the food#something javier notes he never does. no matter the quality of the food how plain or unpleasant it is lloyd never complains about it#and he explicitly calls it out as the way someone that had been starving for years and knew the preciousness of food would act#which if you then take into account that this is been said by a person that survived on his own as a five year old child in the streets#in the middle of winter... well. it sounds less like speculation and more like someone speaking from experience.#anyway. all this to say lloyd would peel an orange and then give half of it to javier and javier would absolutely swoon#and when they're on the road and they sit down to eat javier will always give the fuller plate to lloyd#and lloyd will have to swallow the knot in his throat before he can start eating#llojavi#yeah fine i'll tag it

Perfect 10 Liners knows why I'm showing up every week: color-coded boys in love, Pond x Sand being everything, Fluke Gawin being sexy fine, and Pipo being Pipo.
So I'm glad episode four started with Orange Oddity Pond trying very hard not to be his usual openly honest self, so he doesn't scare Sand away.
But it's very clear he is love with his Blue Boy.
And even though Sand is not as open, his little pink milk shows the feelings are mutual.
So it's no surprise that Pond couldn't even be properly upset at Sand.
Pond is in love and orange is warmth. It would take a lot for Pond to be cold toward Sand.
Unlike these two who are just explosives ready to go off on each other at any given moment.
Therefore, Arc needs his color-coded buddies to keep him level-headed.
Especially the hot one . . . you know, cause his name is Warm. Yeah.
Because as a Red Rascal, Arc is prone to run hot in multiple ways.
Sidenote: I'm so thrilled that Director New is giving me TWO Red Rascals who are true to their color at the same time.
Which everyone is well aware of Arc's hot-hotheadedness as Arc bullies his way to love, causes car accidents, and is ready to throw down at the slightest hint that he or his people have been disrespected.
But fun fact, in science, blue and purple and are hotter than red, so I think Purple Person Cop and Blue Boy Warm should see how hot is too hot. You feel me? Do you see the vision?
But back to the point I was making about a hot man Warm. He is stability for Arc because normally, Thailand likes to pair the Blue Boy with the Red Rascal since they do provide a good balance to each other, but this show understands that they would make even better friends because Blue Boys will call out Red Rascals.
But they will also be the first ones to help each other while still being a bit petty about it.
And Arm also has a great friend crew because even though Green Guy Pipo is a chill guy, he is always there for his friends, and Sand always gives a level-headed perspective because that's what Blue Boys do.
Basically, both of these color-coded boys in love need a Blue Boy in their corner to rein them in.
While Red Rascals are hot-headed, Yellow Yals are impatient. They want everything at once, so having to wait for anything or anyone is truly a test of their restraint.
So it is a great accomplishment that Arc got Arm to wear his color before an actual confession happened.
But then again, Red Rascals are very passionate people and one way or another, he was giving Arm his color.
So even though Arm didn't realize Arc liked him, it's been obvious to everyone else that Arc is very much in love with Arm.
Because just like when a Red Rascals is angry, when he is love, it's easy to see.
Since they make it everyone's problem.
#perfect 10 liners#color coded boys in love#the colors mean things#I love these colors so much#a red rascal would have road rage and beat people up without hesitation#they have so much rage about everything else#arc is the epitome of a red rascal#I want to speak to the manager#and tell them that this person deserves a promotion#and pond not even trying to scold sand is excellent#episode four#I'm having a great time here

ok ok but jayroytim😏
this feels especially funny if brudick happens in the background and oliver hates the fact he's now in-laws with bruce
so i have to regretfully admit i'm not really a fan of JayRoy, or at least i'm not a fan of the popular version of JayRoy. i think JayRoy could work and would be a lot of fun! but i have *zero* interest in New-52!JayRoy (or New-52!Roy in general) or rlly any version of Jason and Roy on the Outlaws together. both bc i'm a pre-Flashpoint stan at heart. usually i can stand newer content for ship fodder but for these two oh man it grinds my gears how badly Roy got fucked over-
BUT BUT. that doesn't mean i think the ship has *no* merit. because Jason and Roy *do* have some fodder in pre-Flashpoint. they meet briefly when Jason is Robin, and then again when Jason is Red Hood during that Outsiders arc where Black Lightning is in prison. so! there's definitely material to work with. especially playing into the more fucked up nature of Roy knowing Jason when he was Robin. i think it's cute if Jason had a childhood crush on Roy. and maybe Roy even thought Jason was kind of cute, a spunky kid with a lot of energy and passion. then with Jason as Red Hood, Roy openly doesn't trust him and doesn't like that they're working with him. Jason is just a run-of-the-mill villain with a nasty kill count. and sure, Roy's got a record of tangling with people more on the villain side of things, but even going near the Red Hood feels like a step too far.
adding Tim to the mix is really fun. bc honestly it gives Roy some kind of a fetish for guys who have been Robin and i find that to be delightful. like, even if Roy just sees Jason as the Red Hood, he can't *quite* let go of the image of Jason as Robin. like it just won't get out of Roy's system ever since Jason came back. i think, if i were to write these three together, i'd have Roy and Tim get together first of all people, just because Roy is trying really hard to stop thinking about Jason as Robin, especially now that Jason is older and a little meaner. he's full of guilt about it, and he can't talk to Dick because he's still not sure where Dick's feelings fall about the whole Jason thing so. he goes to Tim instead, thinking if he fucks a different Robin, maybe he'll get it out of his system. Tim's pretty and he's just old enough that it's not *too* morally questionable for Roy to seek him out. it takes a while for Roy to work up the nerves because he and Tim aren't particularly close, so how do you even approach that conversation to make it look organic. it's awkward and Tim can definitely tell something is up but hey, who's going to say no to Roy Harper offering sex? one of Dick's best friends? especially if we put this right after Kon and Bart's death where Tim is just. sort of lonely and seeking companionship. in some ways,, Roy would remind him of Kon, just a little. that sort of cocky attitude and snarky smile.
i would add Jason in by having JayTim happen alongside RoyTim. it's not like Roy and Tim are serious enough to be exclusive and Tim knows Roy is sleeping around, so Tim ends up in a weird hatefucking situation with Jason, which definitely was not supposed to happen. Jason just has a damning way of getting under Tim's skin and won't stop bothering Tim until he gets some kind of attention from Tim. and somehow Jason is interesting enough for Tim to cave. and he doesn't even think about the two relationships he's balancing until he happens to sleep with Jason after being with Roy the night before and there are still marks all over him and Jason does *not* like sharing. so when he interrogates Tim and gets nothing, he does the reasonable thing of stalking Tim to figure out who it is. and it just happens to be the guy Jason had a crush on as a kid.
i think Roy finding out he tried so hard to avoid Jason that he accidentally ended up with the same fuck buddy as Jason would be the funniest thing in the world. like it's not something he can run from anymore and he has to accept that. he tries to awkwardly ask what Tim even sees in the guy bc well, Jason's a killer and not known for being mentally stable. but he's also the guy who exonerated Black Lightning with no real motive besides just helping out. he's complicated and Roy doesn't know how to react. Tim just sort of shrugs bc how do you even explain Jason Todd and well, one thing leads to another and Tim ends up in the middle of the most emotionally charged threesome he's ever been in. love the idea of Jason and Roy using Tim as a toy while they work out their feelings for each other. to me that's the peak dynamic. Jason and Roy are pissed about liking each other and somehow, Tim got roped into things. their relationship is not healthy or normal whatsoever, but somehow, they end up balancing each other out nicely.
background BruDick is also hilarious tho. bc there is no one who hates Bruce more than Oliver and he'd be so annoyed that not only did Roy get tangled up with the Bats, but now everything is so weird their families are pretty tangled together and Oliver has to deal with Bruce a lot more than he wants to. and he's glaring daggers about it the whole time.
#necrotic answerings#jayroytim#jayroy#jaytim#roytim#brudick#i know melody-atlas has some great jayroytim stuff!!#and like to be clear i like the idea of jayroy.#i just don't like outlaws or red hood/arsenal. or any canon where roy is in a ten mile radius of jason except that outsiders arc#for me jayroy is fun bc of the fucked up angle of roy knowing jason as robin#but since most jayroy content is catered to new-52 characterizations i have a neutral leaning negative opinion on it#but that is *not* your fault anon this is a fun ship i totally get it!#i just don't think i'll ever write or read jayroy#so if anyone else wants to use this idea. feel free it's up for adoption idc#this shit has a “free” sign and is sitting on the side of my road for you to come pick up#the idea is super fun and i'm mildly tempted by it but yeah just not for me#but sometimes that's the fun! brainstorming for ships you don't ship bc you get to think outside the box#like shipping is just silly fun vibes and this was fun to think about how i would do this ship#bc it's a fun lil challenge#there are plenty of things i don't ship but i *could* enjoy if written write and that's where jayroy falls for me#usually not for me but the perfect fic could absolutely convert me

hello! in the most recent chapters, the viz translation switches between sanji using “plans” to nami and unnamed giant guy using “schematics” to describe whatever drafting/map/sketch nami found of the cage. does oda make that distinction too?
nah, it's the same word in japanese. 計図/sekkeizu, meaning 'plans/blueprints.'

FIVE EASY PIECES
"I mean, I move around a lot because things tend to get bad when I stay."
ROAD MOVIES ARC movie 2
FIVE EASY PIECES (1970)
APRIL 14, 2024
Not just a Road Trip movie, but an I-5 Road Trip movie, perfect for us Oregonians! Filmed partly in Oregon (including the famous diner scene, which was filmed at a Denny's in Eugene), this classic 1970 tale of blue-collar alienation and discontent, directed by Bob Rafelson, gave Jack Nicholson his first major lead role, a year after his Oscar-nominated supporting turn in another great American road movie, Easy Rider. Nicholson plays a classically trained pianist who rejected his upper crust family and is working the California oilfields, when he decides to return home to visit his ailing father. Five Easy Pieces comes from the heart of the American road movie era, with Easy Rider, Vanishing Point, Two-Lane Blacktop, Badlands, and Duel all coming out between 1969 & 1973.
"The movie is joyously alive to the road life of its hero. We follow him through bars and bowling alleys, motels and mobile homes, and we find him rebelling against lower-middle-class values even as he embraces them... Robert Eroica Dupea is one of the most unforgettable characters in American movies" -Roger Ebert (four stars)
"It's not a particularly subtle film, but it is a magnificently insightful and engaging one, flipping effortlessly from icy realism to heated melodrama while always maintaining a darkly comic, at times quietly satirical undercurrent." -Time Out
7:30 trailers 7:35 short film 7:45 - 9:21 Five Easy Pieces

Kind of bummed out that The Batman's successors will likely focus more on "grounded" villains instead of the likes of Pamela Isley, Basil Karlo, Waylon Jones, or Victor Fries (or if they are present, they'll likely have some kind of symbolic association to their powers rather than outright), just because in my opinion, the first movie would have established in the background if sentient plant powers or any kind of abilities were even in the realm of possibility for Gotham.
#It should be said I have an arc for how I think the movies should go#that I think works with Batman's key traits and themes#and I shall happily give it to DC because I don't trust them#but The Batman is very street-level focused#lots of emphasis on the mob/systematic corruption/good intentions paving the road to hell#I think the street level crime shall predominate unfortunately#batman#bruce wayne#the batman 2022#battinson#dc comics

RAYLLUM S6 MEME: touches [6/9] 6x05, “moonless night”
Then those are… Quasar diamonds! The only thing that can bring back your family. You knew. You knew this was the reward. Why didn’t you tell me? ‘Cause I know you, Rayla. If I’d told you, you would’ve refused to go, 'cause you never do anything for yourself.
