I say this as a huge Caleb fan - one of the things I hope the M9 animated show doesn’t tone down is how prickly and shady and unlikable he is at the start of the story.
In fact, ramp it up even! There are no players who are actual friends to get in the way of giving us abrasive and off-putting Caleb!

I suppose the most important, burning animation question is this:
How progressively fucked up are they going to make Sprinkle look as time goes by in the show. Because let's be real, that poor weasel was kept alive by the power of Artagan and plot armor because he was just a pet and didn't go into combat (where he could then get hurt/ die fair and square like Trinket). So he was always "hiding in Jester's armor" lol.
Now here's the dilemma I think they're going to run across. The "Sprinkle longing for death" gag is one of the funniest things ever, but it is highly dependent on Travis and the rest giving voice to Sprinkle's woes as meta commentary. Without that, in a visual medium, unless they strike the balance just right, I think visual animal abuse just isn't that funny. In fact, I think done poorly it could very quickly turn the audience against Jester. Objectively, if you look at the situation stripped of comedy, Jester is a neglectful, abusive pet owner and should feel bad. But obviously that's missing some of the context of the show. And I think that somewhat intangible context is going to be difficult to translate to a visual medium. They could maybe play into the "are we SURE Sprinkle isn't undead? Gag with Fjord asking Caduceus to just double check or something. They could try to translate some bits of the meta into the character's mouths.
I think there's a good chance they'll skip it altogether and just have her be competent at pet care which is really too bad considering a good chunk of the audience already infantilizes Jester and ignores all of her flaws. Keeping one of the funny yet terrible things she did as a running gag would be good. And it's just so funny. Poor Sprinkle.

Artist’s Parents: wow, you’re working on an animated series? that’s great, hun. do you have a particular part you’re drawing?
Artist hired specifically to draw all the balls and cocks Jester paints upon any surface she passes: yeah background art

One of my personal hopes for whenever Mighty Nein Animated comes out is that, similar to how they cranked up the dial on Vox Machina being kind of underestimated loser mercenaries at the beginning to make their rise to legendary status more satisfying, I hope they really place notable emphasis on just how fucking shady the Nein are. Like, Vox Machina are crass dumbasses who aren’t above a little pickpocketing or B&E on occasion, but the Nein are on a whole other level. They will have done absolutely nothing wrong and they still act like they’re hiding a body under their floorboards. One of their first adventures together was framing a political figure for sedition and attempted murder. They stole a beacon just because they felt like it. Beau casually committed mail fraud in like episode 4. They have worked for the mob and have committed piracy. These guys are straight up criminals and I would like that to be made very clear.

A snippet of animation for the new Mighty Nein series was previewed and I need everyone to remember that Fjord used his real voice in front of Jester before they ran into Beauregard. Jester mentions in-game how Fjord was speaking differently. (Just pointing this out for those confused or disappointed he wasn’t using his texblade voice.)

have been thinking about the recent interview about the mighty nein animated series where it was mentioned that the series as a whole would be more of a departure and that vox machina s3 is a similar change versus the more canon retelling they started with in s1 and i’ve seen some negative reactions to it but honestly i’m Psyched to hear that is a change they’ve committed to in their writing and storytelling for the animated series because like. we have the campaigns. and for me the moments in the animation that have fallen the most flat or haven’t felt as fulfilling is when the show has tried to capture the Same Thing as the campaign without having the hundreds of hours of context that supported the moment in the campaign that made it Significant. and it is much much more exciting for me to have a changed story that is changed because it is now. a episodic television show and not a recording of actors playing dnd. like . yes actually Please change the storylines to be storylines and not the whims of game players. yes actually please make a good story in the medium it’s being told in.
#these r just thoughts i’ve been ruminating on#because while i love tlovm . i don’t think i really consider it a super great show in terms of storytelling#it’s great to me because . blorbos from my shows#but there are some dynamics and characters that go under developed simply because . 7 characters is a large ensemble in any work.#in a 12 ep season w 30 minute episodes ? truly like. there’s no way to have both story and character depth#the way that it’s had in the campaigns#and that’s uh. good actually#that’s why different mediums and different stories get told in different ways#tlovm#mighty nein animated#critical role

now that I've had two years to think on it (and 3 lovm seasons to reflect on): here's some mighty nein moments that I would love to see in m9 animated that I think will actually have a shot at making it in:
- Caleb's and Fjord's conflict over the scroll in the High Richter Heist (Fjord holding a sword at Caleb's neck), or something adjacent, likely put in in a different fight scene
- Fjord, Jester and Yasha being kidnapped
- Caduceus's creepy eye-butterfly dream the night before the fab 4 arrive at the grove
- Beau's underground brawlery backstory scenes
- Yasha's scream at Molly's grave (still)
- Finding the beacon for the first time
- Walking through the worm tunnel
- Avantika and Fjord..
- Caleb holding up the beacon in the Bright Queen's court
- Cupcake scene (obviously)
- The King's Cage (Beau and Fjord barely making it out, Jester screaming for Yasha)
- Fjord throwing the Falchion into the lava, and then gaining the Star Razor
- Nott to Veth transformation scene
- Fjord's last stand on the ship + being killed (Dark Waters ep)
- Ruby performance
- Jester's giant lollypop

Can we please stop asking if Sam will not voice Veth/Nott in M9 Animated instead of a Female Voice Actor? It's unimaginative at best and transphobic/bioessentialist at worst. Literally the only reason why he might not is if he no longer physically can because of his cancer treatment/recovery, or some other unavoidable such reason.
She is *his character*, he is a talented voice actor with a personal connection to her backstory and motivations. This shouldn't even be a thing.

We all know Taliesin made the poor life choice to treat C2 as a learning opportunity to work on his Irish accent, right? And we all know what happened to Molly and everything to do with Lucien. If you don't that's your cue to stop reading this and go finish campaign 2. So, for the Mighty Nein animated show, I have several questions.
Is Taliesin going to voice Molly? I assume yes but he might give it to Matt considering he never gets to play main characters, and Tal has Caduceus and irish pains him so. That's almost certainly not going to happen, but it's a fun thought and they're all pretty generous with the spotlight and their characters so you never know.
Is Molly going to have an irish accent? Again I assume yes but not necessarily lol. Taliesin has had years to work on it and he'll be in a recording studio not a live situation so it's totally doable, he'll be fine, the others will only roast him a little bit if and when he fucks it up.
When the story eventually gets to Lucien is it going to be voiced by Taliesin or Matt? Here's the one I'm genuinely not sure about, I can see great arguments for either choice honestly. Taliesin because it's the same body and the same voice box so people will recognize the character's voice, Matt, because come on, it's Matt! Fun, give him something to play with! Though I suppose he's probably going to be Essek so at least there's that for the Aeor arc. (And his accent is better sorry Taliesin love you!) I'm leaning towards it probably being Taliesin just for logical narrative consistency reasons more than anything else. It would be a little weird if it went Taliesin as Molly then Matt as Lucien then Back to Taliesin for Kingsley lol. But Matt's a good mimic so who knows!
