"Three ships who have contributed much to the history of the sea are seen together at adjoining berths in the Hudson River at New York City, U.S.A., on Nov. 9, 1945. They are left to right: RMS Queen Mary, holder of the Blue Riband of the Atlantic; the USS Missouri (BB-63), on whose quarterdeck the Japanese surrender was signed and USS Europa (AP-177), former German luxury liner and onetime holder of the Atlantic record now being used as an American troopship."

When A. Roquin designed this sleek Art Deco poster for the Cunard Lines' New York to Southampton route in 1938, he focused on New York skyscrapers: the Chanin, Chrysler, and New York Central buildings. Flanking them are the R.M.S. Queen Mary and the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth.

bro im going to see the united states in like two days im so glad the court stuff is taking a while i was so nervous lol
Omg, the pier she's docked at just got in trouble for trying to sell her for scrap behind the Conservancys back
Out of the thousands and thousands of ocean liners that were ever built, 14 remain. The SS United States is one of them, and an important one at that. Despite being constructed in 1951, she still holds the speed record to this day. With a top recorded speed of 38.32 knots (70.97 km/h; 44.10 mph) and a theoretical top speed of 42 knots, she was 1 nearly 10 knots faster than second place, the RMS Queen Mary. For reference, Titanic had a top speed of 22 knots, was 108 feet shorter than the SS United States, and 10,000 gross registered tons smaller. Going at 35.59 knots, she could cross the Atlantic in 3 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes. It's such a shame that one of mankinds greatest creations isn't being cherished like the work of art she is. Up until recently, a tour required a $1,000 donation. It was recently lowered to $250. If anyone is interested in donating:
If you're interested in a tour, send an email to [email protected]
(Her designer, William Francis Gibbs, looking on at his greatest creation)

I don't wanna talk about how long did it take me to finally get to her... but here she is, RMS Queen Mary, in all her glory!
Period accurate clothing my ass. I decided that for most Cunard queens I'm gonna go for more regal clothing because the worms in my brain CRAVE even more variety or else I will blow up on the spot

queen mary on war service, thousands of men on deck postcard ca. 1946-47
the mary was a crucial troop transport ship during wwii; she carried up to 15,000 troops on crossings, and could carry as many as 16,683 (the most passengers ever transported on a single ship, crew included). she received the nickname "the grey ghost" because of her wartime paint and sheer speed.

would u consider what happened to SS Normandie to be twink death
also WHY NO SS NORMANDIE
Hoooooooo boy. I assume you're referring to my top 25 list of ocean liners? So yeah... uh... i hate to say it, and I'm probably going to get crucified for this, buuuuut.....
I'm not a fan of the SS Normandie.
I know! I'm sorry! But of all my criteria that a ship needs to meet, she just doesn't hold up! First, her career. It was PATHETICALLY short. Only 1935 to 1939. She sat in New York for a few years until she burned down (as is the tradition of French liners cough cough). The most interesting part of her career was her rivalry with the Queen Mary, but personally, I just think that story is way more interesting from the Queen Mary's side. I think the story of her engineering is interesting, like her turboelectric engines, and her hydrodynamic hull, but I think the engineering of ships like the SS United States is just more interesting! People say she's the most beautiful ship ever engineered, buuuut....
Yeah, I just don't get it. ESPECIALLY compared to her younger fleetmate, the SS France
Or her OLDER fleetmate, the SS Île de France
Who had a MUCH more interesting career, by the way.
Anyway, people point to her interiors as an art deco masterpiece..... BUUUUUUT
Look, from an artistic standpoint, I would never argue that these interiors are gorgeous. But people often forget that this isn't an art museum. It's an ocean liner. People are expected to live in these spaces for at least 4 or 5 days. Would you feel comfortable staying in a hotel that looked like this? With all the metal and marble and stone? This cold, towering, imposing atmosphere? It feels like a goddamn palace, and not in a good way. I'd be afraid to touch anything. Like I said, it's pretty, I just dont think it serves it's purpose very well. And people from the 1930s generally agreed with me. Many people described it as being "too much" and bordering on gaudy. I vastly prefer the Queen Mary's, Queen Elizabeth's, and Caronias take on Art Deco.
They just feel so much more homey and warm and inviting. Personally, I'll always prefer the Edwardian decor, which was a more restrained version of the Victorian decor. The Olympic's grand staircase, first class lounge, and a la carte restaurant are my favorite examples.
So anyway, those are the reasons I'm not a fan of the SS Normandie. Her story is short and largely uninteresting, and the way it is interesting, other ships like the Mary and the Big U do those things better. Her exterior is weird looking and ugly, and her interiors are oppressive, gaudy, and downright uncomfortable. I just never understood the love for Normandie. Anyway, if you disagree with any of my points, PLEASE let me know! I love talking to people about this stuff ^ω^

Behold, the true monarch of the ocean: RMS Queen Mary! She may well be the world’s most beloved ocean liner barring, of course, Titanic; her existence has touched lives the world over and she continues to be a cultural staple today. She’s high up on my list of favorite ships, and as such I decided to draw her not as a gijinka, not in her current hotel-slash-attraction form, but as the record-breaking liner she was built to be. Here she is, thundering across the waves, racing the sky itself as she sets a new speed record for Britain and Cunard.
And, of course, here are the notes:
I started this drawing more than a year and a half ago, in the spring of my first year at college. For context, as of posting this it’s the fall semester of my third year, so quite a bit of time has passed. The piece was stalled for so long because coloring the hull was so daunting - I didn’t want to mess anything up, and I knew it would require a lot of graphite!
Originally, this was going to be a fully inked and colored piece. However, the way I shaded the hawsepipe and the top of the funnel just looked too nice to erase or color over, so I switched to making it a pencil-only piece instead.
Despite how realistic I made the drawing, there are some elements that are missing or otherwise incorrect. The horizonal poles (which I believe are cargo booms) attached to the foremast are absent; you should be able to see one of them from this angle, but I left it out because, when I first started the drawing, I wanted to simplify things slightly. I ultimately changed my mind, but by then it was too late in the process to add that in. That’s also the case with the simplified instruments on top of the bridge.
The rigging is simplified, but I tried to be accurate with the stuff I did add.
I made the smoke and water look like that by coloring them in normally and then smudging the pencil with my fingers. Then I added darker areas in the smoke for shading, and finally I used an eraser to make the lighter parts in both the smoke and water. Realistically, Queen Mary wouldn’t have actually produced such a dramatic smoke plume, as she was an oil-fired ship rather than a coal-fired one, but the bigger cloud looked cooler and more dynamic. Also, the smoke should be blowing backward, but it isn’t for similar artistic-license reasons; this, at least, can be explained by saying she must be sailing in some pretty strong wind!
I was originally planning to smudge the hull too in order to smooth out the coloring, but I changed my mind.
I based the drawing on this photograph!
