1. Your first OC ever?

the oldest truly original OC i can really remember is named Aron, but she's been out of sight and out of mind for ages so i dug through some old files to see what her deal was. unfortunately i was like 10 and my writing was unorganized and cringe, but what i can gather here is that she was very headstrong, she had a minder/bodyguard, and her solution to most problems was punching them until they stopped being problems. kind of into it, might need to rework her and bring her to the modern age.

12. Name an OC that isn’t yours but who you like a lot

oh man. percy de riva (@/crossdressingdeath), my husband's special little guy Sauntar from DND (@/goldencruel), river becker OF COURSE (@/idlenight), amaris ingellvar (@/mournmage), WRYNN THORNE (@/jadeempire), etc etc. so many. i am blessed with many friends with many OCs to cherish.

answered before. im a romance writer at heart so all my guys come with guys who they fall stupidly in love with. of my purely original pairs, my big OTP is vali + davyn. they're literally made for each other but also they're just very good and i just keep coming back to them over and over.

spinning a wheel... DAVYN. okay lmao. davyn comes from a fantasy setting so social media is NOT a thing but if i were to pluck him out of his world and put him in a modern AU, davyn's blog would be a neutral beige + desaturated blue colour scheme and it'd be a super generic like, aesthetic/fashion blog. he'd follow discourse/politics/news blogs but he'd never reblog from them. he has a vent sideblog under a completely different url so it can't be traced back and every few weeks he goes on a posting spree where he just unloads the circumstances of his personal life to a near-doxxing himself level. the sideblog has more followers than his main blog because it's like watching a car crash in slow motion.

2. What does Rook think of the Lighthouse?

Asla's seen her share of impressive magical workings, growing up in Minrathous, so the floating bits are not quite as disorienting as they might be otherwise... but she's definitely never seen anything like the Fade, and the fact that the rooms can move and grow, spirits roam the halls, and there is never - ever - dawn or sunset, does disconcert her. She found the aquarium comforting because water was something she could understand a little better, even if she can't let herself think about it too hard.

Liesl finds it a tremendous feat of magical engineering, and often pokes about in the enchantments with Bellara or Emmrich, or follows the behaviors of the wisps with Neve. The Necropolis is such a focused realm of magic that she doesn't know exactly what to do with such a formless, boundless space, but she rather likes the difference.

4. Did they save Minrathous or Treviso from the dragons? Why that city?

Asla saved Minrathous. It was her home, dammit, and she knew from her time with the Shadow Dragons just how deep the rot went and how the Venatori were champing at the bit for any opportunity to surge. She made the decision in an instant, and would do it again a thousand times over... as much as she wept in private about Treviso and the foul blight choking its beautiful canals.

Liesl saved Treviso. She had heard of the fearsome defenses of Minrathrous, the way its mages held ultimate power compared to being consigned to Circles or the Mourn Watch in Nevarra. She was concerned for them but had all faith they would be able to repel a dragon, whereas she had seen how unfortified Treviso was and how the Antaam had simply taken the city with almost no fight. She chose Treviso to aid the civilians, and was horrified and shocked at how extreme the damage in Minrathrous was. Her nightmares now include bodies in the streets, hangings in the markets, Neve's still bruised and battered face staring back at her, cold as ice.

6. Which area of the map is Rook's favourite to visit?

Both Asla and Liesl love the beauty of Arlathan Forest. Asla focuses on the more natural aspects, loving the sound of flowing water, the slight hint of a chill in the breeze, the smells of the towering trees, the wildlife -- though the halla make her uneasy, as they only seem to find sick ones. The magic she finds offputting but feels safer with Bellara to handle the charms and Lace to tell her about the differences in Fereldan and Arlathan nature.

Liesl is entranced by the magic, and tries to wonder what it was when the ancient elves walked the city streets. The sheer amounts of raw magic that clearly were needed to maintain the city boggle her mind. She tries to imagine her magic working in such a way, instead of in the Necropolis, and it defies imagination. Still, it's an interesting thing to wonder, and she often catches her mind drifting to such thoughts beneath the sounds of the breeze in the trees and the flow of the streams and rivers.

8. Does Rook like the room that Harding and Neve assigned to them? Or are they jealous of one of the companions' spaces?

Asla has always liked animals, and the fish entrance her, making it easy to meditate and allow herself to slip into a space where she can speak to Solas. She had only a small flat in the fabrics district of Minrathous, a space cramped and shared with two seamstresses she barely ever saw, so having her own space now feels luxurious. She enjoys decorating it with little trinkets from her travels; little reasons to keep fighting.

Liesl likes her room, being used to staying in the dormitories of the Mourn Watch. Its color palette is similar to the ever-present gloom of the Necropolis, subtly feeling like home even though nothing could be further from the truth. She gets an Antivan coffeemaker for her room after her conversations with Lucanis, trying to get used to drinking coffee, though cioccolata calda remains her favorite; she winds up making her peace with coffee with loads of added cream and sugar, and she drinks it in the night when nightmares stalk her sleep.

two likes i'm gonna call that an interest check and tell you

so first of all i need to tell you how i've been "playing" veilguard in order to explain where this au came from. i finished inquisition back in late decemeber and immediately wanted to play veilguard. unfortunately, after about a week/week and a half of encountering every single technical difficulty possible (including my wifi router's power getting blown at one point and i'm not even joking), i found that i literally could not run the game. my xbox is too old and my laptop doesn't have a good enough graphics card. i was distraught, and my dear friend @redrobemerle swooped in to save me.

it was already planning on playing veilguard, so it downloaded the game for its own computer (which can run it) and ran two separate rooks, its own rook and mine. whenever we play as my rook, it plays the game and streams it to me over discord and i get to say "please make this decision thank you." since we're playing in a discord call together, we get a peanut gallery as well. specifically, two of our friends, one who's played ever da game and is a huge fan and all the things, and one who has literally never touched a da game. this makes for a truly beautiful peanut gallery as it is, but then it spiraled into an au.

as you might've guessed from the name, we have put all four of our chosen rooks into a pot and said "hey, what if they were all in the game at once." "four rooks? didn't you say once of you hasn't played da?" yeah it's true. we made him make a rook anyways.

those four rooks ARE:

alistair de riva (he/they), my rook. alistair is a mage crow and romancing lucanis.

arul mercar (they/it), my streaming friend's rook. arul is a mage shadow dragon and romancing emmrich.

alhellí ingellvar (she/her), my da afficiando friend's rook. alhellí is a warrior (may be changed to mage) mourn watcher and romancing neve.

and finally, astor laidir (they/them), my da blind friend's rook (i have basically no screenshots of them and i do not know why). astor is a warrior lord of fortune and romancing harding.

yes, all four of us have a names. it started as a coincidence and mostly stayed a coincidence but now it's a bit.

anyways i would like to share three of my favorite anecdotes of these three running around:

while playing through the coffee date scene on alistair's file, we had arul and astor's players watching over my shoulder (because alhellí's player had run to get some food) and constantly ragging on me, with the highlight from arul being "i feel like a fucking voyeur, should i even be here?"

while trying to solve that one puzzle in arlathan where the key to the puzzle is three elven glyphs, bright blue and huge, right above the door, arul's player went "oh, look at the letters above the door? cool can do" and looked ABOVE the bright blue letters to the random red runes that were unrelated to the puzzle. it read out what the shapes looked like to it (river, heart, stonks) and then tried to find them. it could not do that (past the first rune, which managed to somehow be the correct choice). it ran around like a chicken with it's head cut off for two-ish minutes straight until alhellí's player looked at the screen and went "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING". upon realizing what the mistake was the call was in absolute shambles for like 10 minutes. the slow turn to see the actual and extremely obvious key for the door was peak comedy.

infinite drowning glitch. this is technically unrelated to the au but since it was on arul's file i'm using this as an excuse to post the clip. the quality on the video kinda sucks but i think you can figure out what's happening in it regardless.

i have a few other videos of us playing through various side quests, and i wanna collect some of my favorite clips that i have (such as, while walking into the pantry to find a note and no lucanis, me going "I SWEAR TO GOD DO NOT PULL A BLACKWALL ON ME" and "COULD YOU PLEASE WALK UP STAIRS NORMALLY FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE") but yeah. everyone look at my sillies.

Edit: Comparing notes with friends and the differing factor seems to be gender/pronouns?? I'm so curious what the response to a she/her Rook is if that's the case

While I was making all my current/future Rooks in the standalone cc a little while ago, I ended up deciding to redo River's playthrough partly to respec him as a he/they nb (congrats on coming out a second time River lol) and partly to use my newly finished Adaar as his Inquisitor for qunari 🤝 qunari solidarity... 6: What companion are they platonically close with?

Aster de Riva: Bellara! I'm actually not sure what it was exactly but they really platonically gravitated towards her. I think it's a combo of her lightheartedness and analytical mind that they really connect with. I also remember having a moment where I was like "ooh I want to romance her" and Aster was like "not me tho."

River Ingellvar: He might end up the inverse of Aster's relationships because I think he and Lucanis are gonna platonically get along really well lol (I left off right before recruiting him so we'll see)

Adaia Laidir: I'm less sure with her but since she'll romance Neve I wanna say maybe Harding or Davrin.........

4: If your Rook was a companion, where would they be found?

Aster: They'd be a Crow contact Viago sends to you. His protégé. He's very serious and gives a lot of gravitas (Teia mercifully doesn't comment on it). You'd find Aster in a Treviso back alley feeding a cat and cooing over it while stitching its ears and you'd wonder if you found the right assassin... until trouble finds you, and they fire a lightning blast to take out a group of guys and brutally mage-knifes the last one standing before smiling and asking you to follow them to the mission.

13: What are their thoughts on killing? Is it a necessary evil or do they enjoy it?

Aster: Death is an inevitability and they're just the hand that brings it a little sooner for certain people. On a job they prefer clean kills and not to draw things out. However, they're a bit idealistic, and if they're not on a job, they're more likely to spare people in hopes of giving them a second chance (like they felt they got by joining the Crows).

14: What hobbies does your Rook have?

Aster: Puzzles!! They love puzzles and brain teasers. If they and Lucanis shared the newssheets in the morning he'd learn pretty quickly to pass them the crossword before trying to read anything lol. They also collect some kind of trinket that I haven't decided on yet and are not creatively inclined, though they appreciate the creative work of others.

9: Does your Rook get along with their chosen Faction?

River: Yes but I think he feels a little bit out of place as both a non-mage and a qunari.

Adaia: Yes but I think she's the comparatively quiet one among them. Same with her bio family, though, so it makes her feel at home.

11: Weapon of choice?

River: Sword and shield!! As the old adage goes, he protec and he also attac (but also omg it's so fun)

Adaia: Dual wielding daggers, like both her parents 🥺

18: What would your Rook be doing if they weren't recruited by Varric?

(I'm also removing the event where they meet for Reasons lol)

River: He'd probably take a job guarding a trade caravan or something. He likes to feel useful, but it'd also be fascinating for him to spend some time out in nature outside the Necropolis.

Adaia: She doesn't find treasure hunting as satisfying without the Lords so she'd probably dip into a city, feel homesick for Denerim, try to lay low, and then probably end up stirring up trouble for herself defending mistreated elves.

26: What animal best represents your Rook?

Aster de Riva: Picking a corvid might be a little on the nose BUT they can be both clever and playful and like puzzles, and I'd specifically say magpies for being known as thieves and collectors lol

Adaia Laidir: I'm thinking cat; she makes her own way, is self assured, a bit cautious, and she might not get attached too easily but if she finds a Favorite Person(s), she's ride or die

River Ingellvar: A big dog! He's a softhearted jock who does his best to protect all those nerdy goths around the Necropolis (affectionate) and is very excited to hear people talk about things they like even if he doesn't fully understand
