The Lost Boys was as homoerotic a movie as they could make it back in the 80s! It’s not even subtle about it at all! Joel Schumacher knew what he was doing and pushed the envelope as far as he could in that regard at the time. There’s a reason this film still resonates so strongly in the LBGTQIA+ community to this day. That is a BIG part of it’s fanbase and it’s lasting appeal all these decades later.

It’s pretty obvious the real romance in the story is between David and Michael in the movie. They are the center and the focus of the film in many ways. Star was changed from a boy to a woman by Joel Schumacher, but it was the studio that kept demanding her part be made bigger so that the film came off less gay. He part was originally quite small and grew significantly with each draft and even during shooting the film.

Joel Schumacher, who wrote and directed the film was an out and proud gay man at a time when most gay men stayed closeted. 

Alex Winters, who played Marko, has mentioned how much he has admired and respected Joel. He also pointed out how Joel was unfairly criticized much more harshly then his fellow directors and how his being a gay man most likely played a big part in this. 

Corey Feldman has said how Joel Schumacher was one of the few people he worked with in Hollywood that truly seemed to care about his well being. Joel Schumacher was known for how much he looked out for his actors and actresses, especially the kid ones.

I find it unfortunate that some of the tributes to this amazing artists death have come off homophobic when addressing how he was openly gay. I’ve seen a few makes jokes about his Batman & Robin movie that seemed in really poor taste when addressing someone’s passing! I think him being openly gay made many critics think they could be crueler in reviewing his work than they would have been if he had been straight. 

He was a trailblazer who was just being himself. An openly gay man being successful in Hollywood is still threatening to many even today, back when he started, it was powerful statement! His visibility has meant so much to so many!

I just cosplayed Paul yesterday! It was my first photoshoot since before the quarantine started. I forget to take a selfie of it. We were outside social distancing and talked about Joel Schumacher. His movie The Lost Boys has brought me so much joy. He was such talented artist 💖 He was openly gay his whole career in Hollywood. He was always referred to as sweet and kind by people who worked with him. He really came off that way in interviews and on The Lost Boys director commentary.
