Top 10 albums of 2017
Ever since saw some fellow peeps do their top 10 albums of the year, I’ve been thinking about what mine would be ever since. So, these are my top 10 favorite albums of the past year. These aren’t ranked in any order because that would be too hard.
1.) The Unforgettable Fire by U2 –This might be one of my favorite albums of all time. For my sake, I’m going to include The Unforgettable Fire EP too (because I LOVE The Three Sunrises, Bass Trap, and Love Comes Tumbling). A couple facts some of you may not know is that my dad sung this album to me as a baby. “Bad” was also the first song that made me “click” with U2 and start the obsession
2.) The Joshua Tree by U2 –Definitely this album because it’s been such a highlight in the past year. It was incredible seeing U2 live for the first time, let alone see them perform one of my favorite albums and songs.
3.) Tommy (Live @ The Isle of Wight) by The Who –I picked up this vinyl/album at Barnes & Nobles one day and I immediately fell in love with it. Tommy live is so. much. better. than the studio version. The studio version is so tame and eh, but the it live is incredible and rocks so hard.
4.) Dreamboat Annie by Heart –Sam lent me Dreamboat Annie and I went “oooooooo” as soon as “Magic Man” stopped playing. Ann Wilson has the soft voice of an angel, but also the pipes of a rock goddess. They’re like a female Led Zeppelin and I 100% recommend this album.
5.) Ocean Rain by Echo & The Bunnymen –Been obsessed with this album for more about 2 years now lol. I like Ian’s low, somber voice and the overall feel of the album. There’s a lot of good memories with this album. One of my favorites to sing too, along with The Unforgettable Fire.
6.) Abbey Road by The Beatles –I always kinda thought “yeah, Abbey Road, whatever.” Then one night I listened to it all the way through and really dug the whole feel. I originally only liked the last third of the album, but now I like it from start to finish. Pretty stellar album.
7.) This Old Dog by Mac DeMarco –As you can guess by the previous top albums, I tend to like older music. That’s why I was skeptical when I heard Mac DeMarco, a fairly new artist, was coming out with a new album. Turns out I really enjoyed it because it’s not as jangly as his other albums. It has wavy, melodic synth riffs, gentle acoustics, and somber vocals.
8.) Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones Ltd. by The Monkees –Some of you may know I’m a zodiac ho. I also love the aesthetic and music of the 60′s, so it only makes sense I enjoy this album a lot. I didn’t listen to the Monkees for a while until a couple years ago and I gotta say they’re in my top 15 bands now.
9.) Meddle by Pink Floyd –I like this album because it starts off jamming with a bass and echo pedal. Then it smoothly turns into a calming acoustic album with gentle vocals and music. The last track, “Echoes”, is lengthy, but I love it all except for the random 3 minutes of high-pitched space squeeling (?) in the middle. I would like a tattoo of this alum but there’s nothing really that goes with it.
10.) Heaven Up Here by Echo & The Bunnymen –I’m not sure why but this album climbed to the top as one of my most listened to Echo albums. It was my least favorite for a while but there’s something about the first 3 tracks playing in order (Show of Strength –> With a Hip –> Over the Wall). No Dark Things is also cool, but I’ve found myself listening to the beginning nowadays. I’ve got to say that their Porcupine is probably more solid and winter-y
10.5) Porcupine by Echo & The Bunnymen (lol) –Porcupine is a solid winter-feel album; with songs like The Cutter, Clay, Higher Hell, In Bluer Skies, and Fuel. I also like Echo’s “Crocodiles” album for nostalgic reasons
10.7) Crocodiles by Echo & The Bunnymen (last one, I promise) –I like a good majority of the tracks on here like Going Up, Stars Are Stars, Crocodiles, Rescue, Pictures On My Wall, All That Jazz, and Happy Death Men. I usually jump between these 4 Echo albums because I enjoy the content and it’s pleasuring to see how their sound changed and evolved from start to finish. That’s the cool things about short-lived bands too (but also SUCKS), their discography is like a story.
That’s it folks. There’s my top 10 (12) albums of 2017. I don’t expect much to change next year lol but I look forward new, old music I discover. I always tend to listen to older music because I’m a nostalgic ho and I daydream about how times were back then and how classic rock or alternative rock was new at the time. I always look at the past, so that’s why I tend to willingly drown in the 60′s and 80′s.
Anywho, Happy New Years guys! Stay warm!
#This list probably wont even change next year lol#I listen to the same thing all the time#Disintegration by the Cure is also one#but I have been listening to that for 4 years so#Power coruption and lies by new order was one too#thank you to anyone who read this#Its been on my mind for a couple weeks now#I'll probably remember a crucial one after i post this so oops

Evolution of Indian Food
by Swati Saha, Lic. R.E. Salesperson in our Eastside Office
Indian food is not just curry….There is a lot more to Indian food than chicken tikka masala and saag paneer. With 23 different official languages Indian food cannot be represented by a single cuisine. There are distinct regional differences which lend itself to a diverse variety of dishes. With the advent of globalization, the world is now more open to trying the vast array of flavors that are available under the broad moniker of Indian cuisine. New York City has seen an exciting new generation of creative Indian restaurants pop up in the last year. Even the most jaded New York palate will get a sensory pop from these culinary artistes.
Indian Accent, the only restaurant from India to make it to the 2016 World’s 50 Best Restaurant List now has an outpost in New York. I visited the original one in Delhi to celebrate a special birthday and was bowled over by the chefs’ creativity. What Manish Mehrotra has done for Indian cuisine can be compared to the achievements of Ferran Adria. In New York, the menu is highly creative (but a little more grounded in India). The chef uses a deft hand and scribes onto a global palimpsest a mélange of Indian spices and techniques. An example is the kulcha stuffed with pastrami and mustard, a riff on the pastrami sandwich…Katz deli…watch out. My favorites from the current menu are the phulka (superthin Indian flatbread) with pulled jackfruit and soft shell koliwada crabs served with a dried shimp pulao. If you have a sweet tooth, you must try the kesar mango with almond shrikhand.
Paowala in Soho, the latest restaurant from Floyd Cardoz of Tabla fame takes you where Tabla left off and beyond. I did my culinary school internship at Tabla and was sad when it was shut down. But now with the opening of Paowala, some of my favorites at Tabla Bread bar appear on this menu. The breads here are as good as Tabla with a few more twists. I was entertaining a friend visiting New York and we ended up in Soho. Fortunately, we got two seats without a reservation and were delighted after a long shopping spree. We decided to make a meal out of the breads and small plates. Tingmo, the Tibetan bread was new and delicious and black-pepper prawns….thank God for Vasco da Gama’s misadventures.
Heading uptown, Chaiwali, located in a lovely townhouse in Harlem, infuses everyday home cooking (if your home was cordon bleu!), with whimsical touches. Try the kale burger with chutney or the savory rice batter waffles, which is a twist on the traditional dosa. The samosas, a quintessential Indian snack at Chaiwali (best with masala chai) was rated as one of the top 100 foods to eat in Manhattan.
Pondicheri (through Houston) in Flatiron is a wonderful new casual loft like space open for all day dining. Breakfast starts at 7:30 am with goodies from the chef’s ‘bake lab’ as well as some really creative hot options like grits cooked south Indian style! The street food menu is wonderful for a quick bite with all-time Indian favorites like vada pav and frankies, which I ate growing up in Mumbai. Pondicheri does a great rendition of both. Thalis (sampler platter) are a great way to try many dishes at once and Pondicheri has many options to choose from. The ocean themed thali is yummy with the squid ink utthapam (think spicy rice crepes al nero di sepia) being the piece de resistance.
Junoon in the Flatiron district is the perfect place to eat traditional Indian cuisine in a refined setting. The food is authentic and modern at the same time and the presentation is extremely contemporary. The 3-course extensive dinner menu has a wide variety. I am partial to their seafood choices.
Tulsi, the midtown gem is a Michelin star restaurant that serves the best goat biryani slow cooked in a clay pot. This is a great place for corporate entertaining and an excellent choice if you are looking to cater Indian food for your next event.
Tamarind, in Tribeca (a veteran of the Manhattan dining scene) is situated in an art deco building spread over two levels in a 11,000 square foot space. A great choice to savor traditional Indian cuisine that showcases dishes from various parts of India. Their tandoori offerings are really good and hearty. The lamb marinated in malt vinegar and the chicken with basil are melt in your mouth good!
