I tried drawing Meta Salmhofer and it came out… ok. And since I’ve been using @manquesit0 ‘s EC designs/headcanons as inspiration for mine, I thought I’d try to replicate his art style, and I think it turned out pretty good tbh
Tumblr media
It’s not perfect, and it kinda looks like Nemesis, but whatever, I’m pretty proud of it, and I think I might try to do some art studies after exams are over

First batch of @bug-oc bugs. This would've gotten finished sooner, but we've been sick as a dog for most of the tournament's runtime, so we're calling it a victory that we managed to get anything done - there are a lot fewer contestants this year, which means both less art to do and more ability to commit to trying to make some particularly unique creature designs - there are some in this batch that we REALLY want to do justice, and that is... unfortunately hard to do when we're barely functioning for two hours a day. This is our unofficial call to STAY HOME when you're sick! Even if you're feeling sturdy enough to go out and about, your actions can impact those around you very easily.
Design notes and owners below the cut with individual pictures - the middle one here is a beta design that we're still in the process of ironing out, so that one just has
Tumblr media
[This is the first time I've met someone who "worked in Snakemouth" since that one... weird encounter, with those roaches giving me a job offer. I didn't know that they had a security guard position. I... didn't know that they knew what a security guard even is, honestly. To have two bugs involved with the lab turn up is an incredible coincidence. I wonder if the time portal is actually open again, or if different universes just work on different timeframes?
Regardless, it's a good opportunity to advance my knowledge of partial transmutation and multi-organism transmutation. Whatever happened to that moth in the last tournament... my understanding of how to handle both symbiotes and parasitism is clearly incomplete, if running into multiple organisms can cause problems like that. I'll have to put some extra work into monitoring...]
Omelette from @tangleslime2 was one that felt... obvious, we suppose?Your work will one day consume you, and such - one way or another! More literal in this case. A lot of the work here, honestly, is toying with shapes and body language. Omelette has a LOVELY sillhouette with some extremely identifiable clothes, and translating it to a zombee design was Very fun. Maybe a bit plain on the design side, but the linework was incredibly fun to do - we got to do a whole lot of fur, which is always a fun time. This design was very quick and easy, as designs go, and we had a lot of fun doing the hat. Wildly askew, and held on by but a single antennae!
Tumblr media
Sundew and Nerine from @mizzle-moths are untransmuted, as requested - Sundew's pose was very fun to do - nice and fluid, though the wing markings were admittedly a bit funky to parse. We hope we got all the details correct here! Both of your bugs have gorgeous color palettes. Our usual marker set's dark gray marker's dried out by now, so we had to use an alternative, which... unfortunately bled clean through our sketchbook page. Lesson learned, we suppose. The scribble over the eyes used the same pen that we did our linework with - the "scribbling over the eyes of a dead character" trope is very well-worn, but cliche only becomes cliche because it inspires enough people to follow in the footsteps of a story, and we're very fond of the way it adds to the... hmm, visual language? We just think it's neat. Hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
[...working with spirits and more immaterial forms isn't my area of expertise, but it's something i dearly need experience in. My hope is that by advancing my knowledge in this field, I might be able to apply the knowledge to other fields that evade me - anything inanimate has proven to be my bane, and I'm fairly certain that a few of my attempts into this area have produced "hauntings", when they're not producing incredibly specialized organisms. Maybe if I know how to cause a haunting, I can figure out how to not cause one...?]
Moving on to our beta design - that is a VERY rough draft of Beera from @longeth-dayv. Given by the obvious Luigi's Mansion inspiration, we wanted to run with it by pulling our inspiration more directly from a Luigi's Mansion enemy - mostly, this meant tinkering with sillhouettes while trying to figure out what sort of design would match best to the character, and how to translate a design to something recognizable.
The pack, despite its significance character-wise, doesn't have quite as much weight in the balance of the design, which meant more tweaking for the transformation - though we briefly tried toying with the pack itself for this design, that particular page we felt would skew a bit too close to body horror for your personal comfort, so we scrapped the idea. Better safe than sorry, as they say. As such, we're aiming more towards using wire and body language to drive recognition.
The image here is a loose draft based on the bats enemy, used to test the fade and layering of the highlighter we were using - as it turns out, it doesn't layer very well! We started out looking for electric enemies, but we only really turned up the Electric Oozer, and that... was a bit too close to "normal boo" for our personal tastes, so we swapped to just primarily yellow enemies. Though we were previously considering taking the bat design to final draft, actually putting it out on paper convinced us to the contrary, so we went back to the... sketchboard. We'd bet there's a good chance you can already figure out where we're going with this one. A fun design challenge, for sure!
Tumblr media
Finally (at least for this particular evening), we offer you this: a look behind the scenes, (or at least, the scenes that don't involve "us being sick and struggling to communicate whether or not something is sorted with the other mod"). What we've been using to keep track of matches, as well as to draw lots. Not precisely a high-tech solution, but damn if it doesn't work - the ends here are split into two for the sake of a loser's bracket, which we... thought we had figured out, but then it turned out we've been having miscommunications on what the bracket setups even are, and, well...
...we're working on it, we'll say. It might still be integrated, but that'll have to wait 'til trying to do things doesn't require fighting for our life. We will probably rerandomize the brackets for it, we might use it for illustration practice if the contestants are cool with it, so on and so forth. As always, thank you for your patience - we hope that Round 2 encounters slightly less hitchups compared to Round 1.

Sundew
This came to me in that space where the alarm clock has bumped you awake and you can’t get a certain thing out of your head, but you’re not quite asleep or dreaming either? I suppose it’s sort of a half-dream. This is all you get, btw. I haven’t pinned down (and probably won’t) any of the rest like why they’re on Earth, why Zelda sent a giant sundew to the planet, WHERE it ended up, how it caught Mary, or anything.
Saw sundews on “Scotland: The New Wild” Sunday night which might have inspired it; I love carnivorous plants anyway (I have two growing on my kitchen windowsill) so it wasn’t a great leap to end up with this. Plus of course I wanted one where Hiro’s love of plants could be the bit that saves everyone! (Even in the episode where the plant was (essentially) the bad guy, AND it was all happening in their own home environment, these two idiots weren’t allowed to be the heroes without help. So. Yes I am biased.)
I am still working on all my other things. I'm about halfway to a new chapter of werekestrel, wahaha. I just needed to scribble this down.
-----
The plant looked like a giant sundew - easily taller than a human, the great spoon-shaped leaves covered in fleshy crimson spines, each tipped with a glistening globule of dew. Velvety, dusky-pink ribbons that could have been petals? or bracts? or... something... spiralled down from thickened, wrinkly bulbs like little brains at the top of the thickest stems.
The skeletonised remains of small animals and birds drooped from the upper leaves, like small treasures held in open palms to tempt in the unwary.
And at the top, wrapped in six or seven of the aggressive leaves, was Captain Falconer. It had already stolen her pistol and carried it far out of reach – not that she looked in any position to fight to get it back. Limbs slack, her head lolled backwards and her eyes were almost closed – she looked at very least unconscious, if she was even still alive.
“Oh, no, oh no no no!” 101 squeaked, alarmed. “Don’t you worry, ma’am, we’ll have you out of there in no time-!” He took up position just out of reach and drew his weapon.
“No, 101. Wait.” Hiro dropped into a hasty crouch next to him and mantled both hands over the gun. “No shooting.”
“What do you mean, no shooting?! It’s eating her!” the zeroid wailed. “We have to get her out of there!”
“And we shall do. But we will do it my way – with kindness and diplomacy.”
“Diplomacy? It’s a pla-ant!” 101 despaired. “What part of ‘it’s eating her’ did you miss, first time around? Did I not enunciate it properly?!”
“No, I understood you. I just think there may be a better solution than going straight into shooting it to pieces. Not to mention, we may injure the captain in the process.”
From her elevated vantage point, Captain Falconer watched with a sort of detached calm. The plant was obviously exuding some sort of sedative in its dew because in spite of the rash of itchy spots everywhere it had oozed through her clothing and made contact with her skin, she felt remarkably peaceful. Mostly comfortable. Not in any pain. She smiled at her two would-be rescuers and mouthed the greeting – hi – but no sound accompanied it.
101 looked up at her. “I’m really sorry, Captain! I don’t know what’s got into him, apart from it’s a plant so of course he’s having a freaking moment!”
Hiro shook his head, with a tired smile. “Would you stand watch, please? Just in case Zelda is monitoring all this and decides she needs to encourage a little more violence? I would prefer you were ready to defend us and not caught off-guard.”
“What?” 101 turned and immediately saw what the lieutenant was planning. “Oh, whoa, what? No!” His vocalisations grew steadily more frantic. “Hiro, what are you doing? What are you doing?! Oh, no, don’t you dare. Don’t you dare! You hear me?! Don’t! Oh please Hiro please don’t, I can’t rescue you both! I don’t even have hands-!”
But Hiro had already walked forwards, and with his hands up and palms out in a show of trust, stepped into the embrace of the leaves.
At first, the plant automatically grabbed him, with one of the enormous spatulate leaves covered in dewdrops, like an enormous sticky hand coming round behind his shoulders. Then-... it hesitated.
Hiro had picked out one of the long curling ribbonlike tendrils, with its coating of fine velvety red hairs. He held it in both hands, carefully, sandwiching it between both palms, before bringing it to his chest.
The other leaves that had been converging on his position suddenly all froze in place, trembling.
Hiro closed his eyes and concentrated. ~Hello, friend.~
The response was more of a series of vague impressions than actual words, but the meaning came across quite clearly. Confusion. A fading aggression. Surprise. Friend?
~I wish you no harm. I fear our first meeting has not been under best circumstances. I would like to rectify that...~
101 watched in jittery astonishment for a second or two. It... actually seemed like... maybe they were communicating?
Attempting to burn off a little of his agitation, the zeroid took to patrolling the perimeter, a slow fractious wobbly start-stop orbit. He’d do a quarter circuit, then stop, peer into the distance and check no-one was approaching, then spend just as long watching Hiro, worried. It was taking every ounce of willpower and trust in his best friend not to give into temptation and shoot the leaves off at the point they joined the plant’s thick trunk.
Hiro was still standing, though, and not because the leaf was holding him up. So it wasn’t eating him, 101 guessed. (Hoped.) Unless it had hypnotised him to be able to balance. 101 fidgeted, dismissed the thought before it could get itself too firmly established, and resumed his patrol.
He was on his sixteenth circuit when Hiro finally spoke out loud.
“Be ready to look after Captain Falconer,” the young man instructed, dreamily.
101 skidded to a halt. “What do you mean?”
“That plant is about to let her go. Please do not be in the way, but be ready to monitor her biosigns. I think she should be fine but she will probably not fully rouse for a little while.”
“What about you?”
“Well, I have successfully bargained for her release. Hopefully my new friend may be persuaded to let me go as well.”
“-hopefully?!-”
“...now, are you ready?”
“What?! Oh! Er? Right!”
The plant let Mary gracelessly down to the ground in a whispering rush of leaves; clumsy and probably uncomfortable but it managed not to let her head impact the ground as it did so. When it let her go, all the blobs of dew came away from the leaves, leaving her decorated with what looked like a thousand shimmering bubbles.
101 got round behind her and pushed her gently out of reach of the plant, then burrowed under her arm so her hand lay with the palm flat on his casing. Although any close contact was technically good enough, he could pick up her vital signs better that way; her heartbeat was slow, and soft, but steady – her breathing too. Like he imagined it would be if she’d been heavily sedated. Well, that all tallied. She was very sticky, too, but that would wash off. (He hoped it would wash off, seeing as it was all getting on him, as well. Ugh.)
Unexpectedly, a minute or two later the plant released Hiro, as well; he stumbled backwards, lost his balance, and landed with a wince on his backside.
“Are you all right?” 101 was immediately fussing around him. “Talk to me? Did it hurt you? Are you okay?”
“I am fine.” He tolerated the zeroid’s increasingly anxious (and slightly heavy-handed) checkup for only a few seconds before pressing both hands to him with an exasperated laugh. “Argh! Owun, I am FINE! Go look after Mary!”
“At least just tell me how you knew it wouldn’t eat you?” 101 wondered.
“Well, I... didn’t, for definite. But I was fairly confident.”
“Fairly conf-...” 101 butted into him, frustrated. “...you are gonna make me blow a fuse, one day, and NOT in the good way.”
Hiro patted his cowling, then grimaced at the long strands of sticky dew that came away on his fingers. “Come on. We still have a job to finish.” He gathered Mary carefully against him so she wasn’t sprawled out over the rocky ground, then ensured her palm was back against the zeroid’s exterior. “Have you raised the alarm with the others?”
“Yeah. I calculate they’re about forty-five minutes out.” 101 approximated a sigh. “Could Zelda not have at least found a plant that wasn’t gross and sticky? I am going to be completely covered in twigs and dirt by the time we get home and I KNOW Zero’ll make a big deal out of it for weeks.” He leaned against Hiro’s leg, and grumbled; “And people act like I’m weird when I say I prefer it up on my lovely clean spaceship.”
Hiro cleared his throat, delicately. “Whose lovely clean spaceship?”
“Um. The?”
Hiro’s eyebrows still hadn’t stopped their voyage to deep space.
A little huff. “Fine. Your lovely clean spaceship.”
Hiro laughed. “Our spaceship, I think? Cheer up, my friend. I will help you bathe when we get back. You will soon be your clean fashionable self again.”
The zeroid gave a satisfied little chirp and wiggled himself comfortable against his friend’s side while they waited for collection. Mary slept peacefully on, although she’d started very slightly to stir, so was obviously recovering nicely.
“So, uh. What are we gonna do with Sticky, anyway?” 101 kept looking back at the monster sundew, as if not totally convinced it wasn’t about to change its mind, get up on its roots, and come after them again.
“Oh, I think Sunny is a nicer name, do you not?” At the full-body eyeroll, Hiro smiled, and patted his sticky zeroid on the crown of his head. “It was already a terribly long way from home when Zelda found it, in a damaged, abandoned exploratory vessel. She promised to find it a new and better home. It had been alone for so long, in the cold and the dark, of course it agreed. She sent it to Earth as a spore on the side of a cargo vessel, which is how it evaded our attention.”
101 looked up at him, cocked exasperatedly to one side. -and?-
“I told it we would find a home for it, until we can work out where it belongs. It accepts that we may never be able to send it home, but... At least we can find it somewhere that we can care for it and feed it, and give it the company it desires.”
101 gave him a loaded glance. “Please don’t say you mean on Spacehawk-!”
----
Plot twist: it IS an Earth sundew, picked up in prehistory by aliens, experimented on and given sentience and size in an effort to make it some sort of ‘property defence organism’, then some disaster befell the crew before they finished and they abandoned it on their ship, just drifting, where Zelda finally found it. So it WAS far from home. It’s just... not far from home any more?

Love for The Artists
Updated; 21/01/2025
This is totally unprovoked, but I just wanted to openly appreciate the artists on this blog.
Because my talents do not include art and a lot of requested characters are from books or podcasts, I tend to ask a lot of people for permission to use their fanart on my blog; they could easily say no and I understand each time someone does. So I just want to say thank you to every artist that gives me their permission.
Trust me, if I had more disposable income, I'd happily commission every one of them

Chapter 5: Ivy - Helping Hand
Eyy, we finally get to see the human and frog duo in action! This is the longest chapter I've ever written so far, so I hope you all enjoy!
Summary: While out for adventure, Sasha and Ivy find themselves in more trouble than they bargained for.
Tags/Inspirations: @writingamongther0ses, @eclipsewarrior101, @d-blue02, @dawn-is-gay, @hughjidiot, @eeveearoace, @eeveearoace-creative, @sonofrose, @iamthelordoftime, @shikokiomi, @space-lynn, @astro-inthestars, @cynthiacoven, @skibs-scribbles, @casswithmywholeheart, @starsfic, @luna--dragon, @mira-blue, @thatonedorkthatdraws, @dodelidoo, @issabolical
“Oh, and I’ll also need you to take these backup first-aid kits in case you lose your other ones, and—”
“Mrs. Sundew,” Sasha interrupts. “We’ll be fine, I promise.”
It had been several days since the last Frobot ambush on Wartwood, and things around the town had gotten quiet. Way too quiet, apparently, for Ivy Sundew, a stealthy yellow little frog whose boredom knew no bounds. She managed to strike up a friendship with Sasha, and the two soon found that they had much in common. The topic of Toad Tower, of course, was still an awkward subject for them, but they would manage to get over it.
Today, Ivy had begged her mom to let her go out and explore outside of Wartwood, promising to stay safe, and Mrs. Sundew had finally relented, on the condition that Sasha goes with her. She was too worried to let her go alone, but Ivy didn’t mind, since that meant getting some quality time with her friend.
Mrs. Sundew huffs, folding her arms. “I’m just trying to make sure you two are prepared. You never know what could happen. I don’t want you two getting hurt, or worse.”
It feels strange to Sasha, having an adult figure care for her, making sure she was prepared and always stayed safe. She’d never known that type of love, as her parents were always neglectful of her and never cared whenever she was going out, not considering the likely idea that she could get injured, or killed, for that matter.
But this? The feeling of someone caring for you, someone trying to protect you, someone wanting you to stay safe whenever you went out, even if you would be fine?
It feels…odd.
In a good way, honestly.
“Relax,” Sasha insists. “I can handle whatever comes my way. Besides, you know I’m strong. Your daughter is in good hands.”
After a moment of hesitation, Mrs. Sundew finally relaxes. “Alright. But be careful, okay?”
Sasha nods, and exits the Sundew household, where an excited Ivy awaits her, tapping her foot impatiently.
“Finally you’re here!” Ivy exclaims. “Let me guess, Mom made you pack backup first-aid kits?”
“You know it,” Sasha replies with a chuckle. “Come on, let’s get going.”
The two make their way into the woods, wandering through the lush green forest, which is surprisingly still intact, given the current circumstances surrounding Amphibia, what with the Frobots setting up factories and destroying the environment for King Andrias’s selfish, twisted needs. They often stop to admire different aspects of the forest, or to rescue an endangered creature being held hostage by the Frobots, or to simply rest and chat for a bit.
Sasha finds herself having fun with her new froggy friend. The way she excitedly questions her about her achievements and strength, the way she tries to take on any enemy that comes near them, and the way she always has a snarky response for everything, it almost reminds her of when she was little, when she would pick a fight with anyone who came near her as well.
When her parents were still together, before forever splitting apart.
Sasha’s smile fades, and she tries to shake the thought out of her head. She didn’t come here to mope about the past, or what could have been. She came here to have a good time with Ivy and keep her safe, and she’s sure as hell not going to let her memories stop her.
After strolling through the forest for a bit longer, the pair decide to sit down on a log to rest, when Ivy suddenly asks a question that catches her off guard.
“What’s your home like?”
Sasha blinks, not sure how to respond. Her home life was never really ideal, given her history of being ignored and neglected, as well as struggling to keep them together and having to watch them bicker all the time, either her mother or father winning the argument with those three wretched words.
End. Of. Discussion.
Yeah, her home life is about as great as a cat’s capability of swimming.
“It’s, well…not the best,” she finally answers. “Truth is, my parents, uh, never really paid me any mind. They were always busy with work, attending important events and parties, or fighting. Like, verbally and physically.”
“Oh…” Ivy mutters quietly. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to—”
“No, no, it’s fine,” Sasha replies, heaving a sigh as she struggles to lift the weight from her chest. “Truth is, I’ve always been jealous of Anne because of how…stable her life is. She has friends, a community that loves her, and a proper, happy family. Something someone like me could never have. Not after my parents divorced…”
“What’s a divorce?” Ivy asks, more solemnly this time.
“Well…it’s when two people who are married decide they don’t love each other anymore and go their own separate ways.”
“Oh…so just like Mom and Dad, then.”
“Yeah—wait, what?”
Ivy crosses her legs, before responding. “My mom and dad didn’t really get along either. I don’t know the full details, but one day my mom had enough of dad always putting his reputation before our family, so she packed her stuff and left Ribbitvale, and we’ve been both living here ever since.”
“Oh,” is all Sasha can say because she didn’t expect Ivy to have that of all things in common with her too. Guess they really are both alike, the only difference being that Ivy has a loving parent. Heck, one could even mistake them for sisters, except that would be impossible because they’re entirely different species.
“Well, I think that’s enough moping for today,” Sasha decides, getting up and stretching her arms. “Come on, we should probably get back before—”
She doesn’t get the chance to finish before a large thud is heard, and when she and Ivy turn towards the source of the noise, their eyes widen in fear as they set sight on what might be the biggest Frobot ever made, its metallic yellow plates and red frog-like pupils glowing in the slowly darkening sky making it even more menacing.
“…that finds us.” The blonde concludes, grabbing her froggy friend and making a mad dash for it.
The pair race through the forest, maneuvering around trees that get cut by the metallic menace following them, dodging branches that threaten to slow them down, and jumping across bushes with a grunt, desperate to evade the looming threat over them.
Sadly, their luck soon begins to run out, as the yellow spheres on the elbow of the Frobot open up, popping out smaller, slender Frobots that land in front of the human and frog duo, causing them to cease their escape. The two turn around, trying to seek an alternate escape route, only to find themselves cornered.
“This is bad,” Sasha mutters. She’s only now starting to realize why Felicia was reluctant to let Ivy go out of Wartwood. “This is very bad.” She unsheathes her swords from her scabbards wrapped around her waists, and with a yell, charges at the Frobots, slicing them in half one by one. She ducks right underneath another, then stabs it from behind with a grunt. Ivy, meanwhile, flies towards a Fobot ninja style, and lands a kick on it, before hopping off of it, the force pushing the bot back, and landing on another Frobot, tearing one of its eyes out and causing it to short-circuit. Her celebration is short-lived, however, when another Frobot extends its arm and grabs her, placing it on the ground, wrapping its arms around her and keeping her bound, as she struggles to escape.
“Sasha!” Ivy calls out desperately, and the blonde turns around, her eyes widening in horror as she watches the large Frobot launch a missile from its stomach, zooming towards the helpless young frog. She tries to rush towards her, but the remaining Frobots block the path, overwhelming her, and all she can do is watch helplessly as the missile flies closer towards the frog, knowing that she let Felicia down and that she failed to protect Ivy just like she always fails to and now she’s going to die and it’s going to be all her fault-
Then, in the blink of an eye, a pink aura shines from within.
Sasha closes her eyes, and when she opens them, her blue irises are now a pink hue, burning with a desire. A desire to persist. A desire to protect.
She slowly stands up, holding up her sword, and sinks it into the ground, causing pink flames to rise up from it and burn the surrounding Frobots to ash.
The Frobots holding Ivy immediately pick up an energy signature from the Slavic girl and turn their heads towards her, who’s hair slowly lights up in a pink hue. She eyes the Frobots with a look of fury in her pink, glowing pupils, while Ivy watches in awe, temporarily forgetting about the missile homing in on her. When the blonde opens her mouth, her voice comes out with a deep echo to it.
“Let.”
She runs towards the Frobots holding Ivy captive, who drop her and try to defend, but get torn to pieces nonetheless.
“Her.”
Sasha turns her glowing eyes towards the incoming missile, and runs, no, flies, towards the projectile, stopping its course with her bare hands.
“GO!”
With a roar, she effortlessly lifts the missile and throws it at the large Frobot, which explodes upon contact with the bullet. Her breathing slows for a bit as she falls limp to the ground, exhausted, her eyes and hair returning to their natural color, and then it normalizes again.
“That was AWESOME!” Ivy squeals in excitement as she hops towards the blonde excitedly, the latter struggling to pick herself up. “How’d you do that?! Do you, like, have powers or something?”
“Seems to be the case,” Sasha responds as she manages to stand up, brushing her arms. “Anne had powers like those back at Newtopia, except hers were blue. Seems like they manifest in our favorite color.”
“Huh,” Ivy mused. “So if I had powers, would they be yellow? Cause yellow’s my thing.”
Sasha chuckles. “Yep. Probably.” She looks up and realizes how late it is. “Crud, we better head back. Your mom is so gonna punish me for keeping you out this long.”
——————————————————————————
”Where have you two been?!” Felicia demands as she opens the door to greet a tuckered-out Sasha and a still-hyperactive Ivy. “You two were gone for so long I figured you might have died or something!”
“We were attacked by Frobots,” Sasha answers. “But I managed to take care of them and keep your daughter safe. Just like I said I would.”
“It was so cool, Mom!” Ivy continues excitedly. “You should have been there! Her eyes and hair were all pink and she lifted a MISSLE that was heading RIGHT for me—” “Wait, WHAT?!” Felicia yelled, glaring at them, and Ivy’s excitement soon dies down. “A MISSLE?! Do you have any idea what could have happened to you both? You two could have gotten killed!”
“Sorry, Mom,” Ivy responds after a moment of silence, looking down at the floor. “I’ll try to be more careful.”
Eventually, Felicia’s gaze softens, and she sighs. “Well, having you both back safe and sound is all that matters. Now, why don’t you two wash your hands? Dinner’s almost ready. If you’re interested in staying, of course.” She adds, smiling at Sasha.
“Sure, I guess,” Sasha responds. “Better than whatever Grime’s gonna make me, I suppose.”
With a laugh, Felicia heads back into the kitchen to finish cooking, while Sasha and Ivy get their hands cleaned and help set the table. Eventually, Felicia comes out with a bowl of insect burritos along with a side of fly soup for dinner, the smell amplifying Sasha’s appetite. When they sit down to eat, Sasha is surprised at how similar the taste of fried insect is to chicken.
“Mmm, this is really good,” Sasha notes as she munches on a burrito.
“Glad you like it. It’s one of my mom’s favorite recipes,” Ivy responds with a spoonful of soup in her mouth.
“Girls, please don’t talk while you’re eating,” Felicia scolds. “I’m glad you appreciate my cooking, but could you save that for afterwards?”
“Sorry, mom,” Sasha and Ivy both respond in union.
The table suddenly goes quiet, as Ivy and Felicia stare at Sasha with wide eyes sharing a look of confusion.
“Um, I- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—” Sasha stammers, before Felicia bursts out laughing, followed by Ivy shortly after.
“Oh, don’t worry about it,” Felicia responds, wiping a tear from her eye. “Besides, I’m sure you’d make a lovely big sister for my daughter.”
“Wait, I get to have a sister?! That’s so cool!” Ivy exclaims. “If you’re ok with it, of course,” she adds, glancing at the blonde, who lets a small smile slip.
“Sure,” she replies, grateful to finally have a mother figure to look up to. “I’d like that.”

Sinday dare: give us an excerpt of the “background noise” the dictaquill picks up. No holds barred.
I mean, if nobody is talking it just tries to interpret whatever it hears as letters so you get a lot of things like, “skskjfobu2,c918dclsap!” which is usually how it reads Siegfried scratching at the door. A lot of noises get turned into random sets of letters, often without vowels. He sometimes makes other vocal noises, usually growls or squeaks--Siegfried, I mean--and those mostly get turned into “rrrrr” and various vowel combinations.
If it hears another quill writing that usually comes through as, “sk” for every nib scratch on parchment.  I think it started self-filtering the sound of rain, thunder and the lightning strikes, but it never did letters for those really, it looked more like a startled scribble cloud.
Or sometimes it thinks it’s heard a word where there hasn’t been anything said and you’ll sort of get a random word spit out by it. I recall one time, when I was trimming the sundew back with a small pair of scissors, it picked up the snipping sound and just wrote, “sink sink sink sink sink sink” until I was done.
It’s not going to narrate the background noise, if that’s what you’re asking about; it’s just going to try to interpret what it hears that aren’t necessarily words into words with varying degrees of success.
Reckon we could just move the conversation that was happening to Legilimency and see what it picks up. @absintheabsence you good with that?
