Whatta Man Masterlist | Rick’s Party Playlist
as a reminder my blog is 18 +
Sheer curtains sway with a pink glow from the flashing sign outside your apartment, the nip in the October air makes goosebump dance across your exposed skin from the crack in your bedroom window. The summer heat came and went like it always does but not the cute bouncer you took home the first warm night of the year.
Weckx-N-Effect’s ‘Rump Shaker’ spills through the boombox in your living room where Steve stands in front of your long mirror, dressed as John Dalton from Road House, you hear the pitch in his voice deepen,
“Take the biggest guy in the world, shatter his knee and he’ll drop like a stone.”
Rolling your eyes at the line you’ve heard both him and Patrick Swayze deliver all week long, you adjust the white and blue trimmed high waisted basketball shorts that hug your curves before tugging down the cropped Tune Squad mesh tank that matches. Straightening your bunny ears, you turn around to inspect your tail, bubble gum pink glossed lips turning up into a pleased smirk with the height the white platform sneakers on your feet give you. Humming in approval because you know Baby Spice would be proud, your shoulders wiggle in excitement as you apply another layer of gloss before smacking your lips loudly.
“Hey Doc, you got the goods earlier right?” The bouncer calls out.
His boots sound heavy on your shag rug making his way towards the bathroom and even though you saw his outfit earlier, when Steve’s handsome face appears next to yours in the mirror with a wide grin, you still flutter around nothing. Dark emerald eyes turn black as they drink in your costume, and you're almost positive yours look the same admiring the thick patch of hair on full display in his white loose fitting button up. Long sleeves rolled up to his elbows with the top three undone just like Dalton’s.
The extra button reveals more than usual, including the silver chain that dangles from his neck. It shines under the dark curls that cover his chest when it hits the bright lights above you, matching the belt buckle attached to the black leather that holds his tight fitting jeans to his waist. The ivory of his shirt makes his permanently sunkissed skin glow, thighs pressing together when he licks his full lips, moles moving with his cheeks when he grins.
“Jesus, you look - fuck, why’s the tail doing it for me?” Finally breaking character, he runs a hand through his hair, the ring wrapped around his middle finger catching your eye in his reflection.
“Stop calling me that or everyone is going to think I’m Bugs Bunny.” You huff and his lips twitch at your pout, “and if by goods you mean, the Roadhouse soundtrack, yes I picked it up from your friend Robin.”
Turning around, you lean against the sink, the reminder of your promise to recreate the sex scene with him tonight has you giving him an extra exaggerated roll of your eyes, a smile lighting up your face despite yourself. Steve’s big black boots cross the threshold, thick rubber soles squeaking against the rose colored tile, he closes the small distance to stand in front of you.
The warm smell of his Calvin Klein CK One cologne lingers fresh on the cotton of his shirt, along with the faint hint of your hairspray when he stole a spritz when he first got to your apartment. The cinnamon from his Big Red is hot on his breath, the whites of his teeth showing in a grin as he pushes the gum to the other side of his mouth with a tongue that was between your thighs just a few hours ago.
“I’m sorry baby, I’ll stop. I can’t help it when I’m in character you know?” One of his big hands comes up to your face, long fingers spreading across your jaw tilting your mouth towards his. The bouncer takes in your done up features in the light, and the pucker of your glittery lips, looking at him like you needed to be kissed. “No one is going to think a pretty thing like you is anything other than hot.”
“Good.” You try to say it with more conviction, but the way he keeps looking at you like he wants to eat you alive makes it come out quiet.
“Oh yeah?” He questions with a quirked brow, his boots moving the one step left to stand in the space you made for him between your legs. The tip of his nose runs along the bridge of yours, his other hand finding a new home on the plush curve of your hip to pull you even closer. The denim doing nothing to hide just how much your outfit was affecting him.
“I’m gonna have to follow you around all night aren’t I? Gonna make me abuse my power and kick anyone out who even looks at my girl like they got a chance huh?” Steve mutters his threat against your lips, the tips of his fingers digging into the dip in your cheeks bringing your mouth to his.
The strawberry of your gloss is sweeter than it was thirty minutes ago and it makes him groan when his kiss turns possessive, tongues meeting in the middle when he licks into your mouth. Your hands find their way to his chest, your palms finding the warm skin of his chest, the blunt ends of your nails dragging through the dark thatch of hair. He nips at your bottom lip when he lets you go. Pink glitter staining his when he pulls away sticky, eyes blown wide feeling the way your leg starts to lift over his hip, daring him to come back for more.
He tuts at you with whatever self control he has left, letting his hungry gaze drop down to drink up every dip and soft curve on display for him. Your back arches under the heat of it and Steve catches the puffy tail resting perfectly on the curve of your ass in the reflection. His responsibility to get downstairs in five minutes doesn’t seem so important anymore.
“I’m not going to be able to keep my hands off you.” He sounds almost angry, and pride swells in your chest.
His hand slides from your waist, fingertips tips dragging down the soft dough of your thigh making the hem of your shorts bunch up when he hooks them under your knee. He accepts your dare with a roll of his hips, his grin turning salacious when you gasp.
“That’s kinda the point, duh” the giggle that leaves your mouth is breathy as he ducks his head down to the crook of your neck to suck a fresh bruise where the previous one he left last week is almost healed, “oh my godddd.”
His lips curve against you, the hint of stubble along his jaw tickles as he makes his way with greedy lips to all the sensitive spots he’s discovered over the last few months, including the new one he found the other night right below your ear. He nips at the soft skin when your fingers tangle themselves into his hair with a harsh tug at his roots, the back of your calf pressing against his ass encouraging him more.
“Earlier wasn’t enough, my girl needs more attention doesn’t she?” His taunting comes out next to the shell of your ear, the deep baritone making you shiver. “It’s only been a few hours and you want me that bad again, huh?”
Your eyes hit the back of your head when he rolls your earlobe between his teeth. Another tug to his hair, a whine pushing past your pink lips trying to get more of anything he’ll give you.
“Come on baby, don’t be shy.” He hums pulling away from your neck, finally letting go of your face to squeeze at the fat of your ass propped on the sink, long fingers playing with your tail. “Tell me, I wanna hear it.”
The song on the radio changes, and Mase’s ‘What You Want’ encourages the next grind of your hips.
“Gonna make me beg for it Steve?” You pout looking up at him from under your lashes, relishing in the way you feel him twitch in his jeans at the thought. One of your hands trails down the muscles of his stomach, biting your lip when they twitch under your fingertips, adding more to the growing problem in your underwear.
The incessant high pitch beeping of both your tamagotchi’s cuts through the tension like a knife, making both of you freeze and you catch the way his eyes widen, the color coming back at the realization of their need to be fed.
“Steve, I swear to god-“ Your disbelief is quickly cut off by the bellowing voice of a certain bartender from outside your window.
“Hey! Asshole! I know you’re up there. Get your dick in your pants and get down here and help! It’s fucking Halloween!”
Eddie sounds like he’s already at his wits end, and you swear you hear him say ‘before I fuckin’ kill Rick’ as the bar door creaks open before slamming shut behind him.

The Quentin Tarantino Connection
When he was a teenager in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Quentin Tarantino was by his own admission way into ‘50s rockabilly music. “I was like the second coming of Elvis Presley. I dyed my hair black. I wore it in a big ole pompadour”, he said in an interview. In his recent book Cinema Speculation, he writes about discussing cinema with his mom’s black friend Floyd, who was into blaxploitation. He loved hearing Floyd’s first-hand accounts of being a black Elvis fan back in the 1950s, also rebuking claims that the King of Rock ‘n Roll was racist. He even included “Elvis impersonator” in his early résumé and it must have paid out because he was cast as one in an episode of the sit-com The Golden Girls in 1988. Incidentally, Tarantino was born in Elvis’ home state of Tennessee, where his mother is from, and as a kid was even left there for a year, describing his family as “hillbilly alcoholics”.
Tumblr media
Elvis often comes up in his movies. For example in a deleted scene of his now classic film Pulp Fiction (1994), Mia Wallace uses a hand-held video camera to interview Vincent Vega with either/or questions. She explains the game as follows: “There are only two kinds of people in the world, Beatles people and Elvis people”. Mia has no doubts about Vincent’s allegiance. With his swagger, callback to “Grease” and dance moves, John Travolta is an Elvis man through and through.
Tumblr media
Of course, Mia and Vincent later go a to ‘50s themed diner called Jack Rabbit Slim’s, where they have the famous twist contest dancing to Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell”. The waiters are all dressed like dead stars from the 1950s, such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Buddy Holly. Even though, as Vincent would put it, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll must have had the night off, in Mia’s words “an Elvis man should love it”. Tarantino said that the design for the diner, where the guests sit in booths made like ‘50s vintage cars and the dance floor looks like a tachometer, was partially inspired by the nightclub with race car motifs in one of Elvis’ movies, Speedway (1968).
Tumblr media
Tarantino references Elvis here and there in his work. In the novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that he wrote, for example, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie) is described by his agent Marvin (Al Pacino) as having spent all his career “running pocket combs through his pompadour”, which by 1969 not even Elvis has anymore.
His biggest Elvis homage came very early on in his career, though. As a matter of fact, to finance what would become his first movie, Reservoir Dogs (1992), Tarantino auctioned a script that he had written, True Romance. It was made into a movie by Tony Scott and it ultimately came out in 1993. True Romance begins with a casual conversation about pop culture in the style of Mr. Brown with his infamous “Like a Virgin” theory in Reservoir Dogs. Clarence (Christian Slater) is at a bar, chatting up a girl. Like Tarantino, Clarence prefers ‘50s Elvis and praises Jailhouse Rock (the movie not the song) where Elvis was everything that rockabilly was about: “Mean, surly, nasty, rude”. And then, obviously interested in picking up the girl, he continues: “Elvis looked good. I mean, I ain’t no fag, but Elvis was prettier than most women, you know. Most women. You know, I always said if I had to fuck a guy – you know, I mean, had to – if my life depended on it, I’d fuck Elvis”. Tarantino establishes the rules for his story right away: just like you have fantasies where you wish you were Elvis or as cool as Elvis, or you wish you could fuck him, this movie is a whole fantasy where you wish you were a hero who had a crazy adventure and passionate love story involving pimps, drugs and guns.
Tumblr media
Clarence, an alter ego for the author, falls madly in love with Alabama (Patricia Arquette), a call girl. Clarence loves martial arts movies, comic books, hamburgers and Elvis, just like the film director. He also wears Elvis glasses and drives a purple Cadillac. Throughout the movie, Elvis pops up several times, in magazines, on T-shirts and on furniture or posters. The most striking appearance is obviously when Clarence sees Elvis (Val Kilmer) in the bathroom mirror, dressed in his gold lamé suit but anachronistically sporting his ‘70s big glasses. Elvis tells Clarence that he has to kill Alabama’s pimp, and there the adventure begins.
Tumblr media
In Cinema Speculation, which sits halfway between film criticism and memoir, Tarantino goes back to Elvis several times. He writes that Elvis could have been the biggest movie star of the 1960s, if it weren’t for Colonel Parker’s greediness and for the weight of his own enormous success in the music business. He even mentions excitedly that Elvis was considered for the role of Sundance in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) opposite Warren Beatty, before the roles went to Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
Tarantino has always took a liking for B movies, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that he’s not dismissive of Elvis movies as a whole and writes about a few of them in detail. He considers Flaming Star (1960), for instance, to be “a truly great fifties Western, and maybe the most brutally violent American western of its era.” According to him, the film director, Don Siegel, who would go on to direct Dirty Harry (1971), was a master when it came to film fistfights and chase sequences. This was because of his background in editing and his penchant for violence. Tarantino also praises Don Siegel’s unexpected use of shocking bouts of violence, of which there are several in Flaming Star. His protagonists, including Elvis’ Pacer, were often at odds with the society they lived in, which reflected the way Siegel felt around film executives and producers. “Pod people” is how he called them, in reference to his movie The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and in this category he included Elvis’ nefarious manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Tumblr media
Tarantino recognizes that Elvis movies weren’t real movies but “ElvIs movies”, but he’s a fan of Roustabout (1964) nevertheless. He describes it as: “a pretty entertaining little picture chock-full of cool elements, Elvis entering the movie on a motorcycle—dressed head to toe in black leather […], a strong Big Valley era Barbara Stanwyck as his colead, a one-line bit at the beginning by Raquel Welch, the best soundtrack of any of Elvis’ color films, including a rarity for the King on film—Elvis singing a cover of somebody else’s hit, the Coasters’ Little Egypt, and the only film where Elvis gets to demonstrate his Ed Parker-taught karate moves.” Because of course Tarantino loves martial arts movies, just like Elvis did. And blaxploitation, hamburgers, comic books and being over the top. They would have been great friends.
Read here my previous posts on Elvis connections. So far I’ve written about Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol/Bob Dylan, the Clash and Jim Morrison.

Hollywood Party
Cliff Booth x reader
Word Count: 1.2k
Warnings: talks of drugs
Author’s Note: Hi darling! I hope this was what you were looking for, I’m always down for some good old Cliff.
Requested: by anon, Hello my love! I am back to request another Cliff Booth x reader because I am obsessed (and I have an idea this time yay) with your writing! Could you write one where the reader drags Cliff to a party with a lot of dancing (similar to the dance scene at Playboy Mansion) and although he is hesitant at first, he is eventually persuaded to dance and there is a lot of fluff? Thanks 💖
Summary: the request
Genre: fluff
I don’t own these characters. They belong to author/director
(not my gif)
Tumblr media
Cliff wasn’t invited to plenty of parties. He was in the Hollywood scene after all and he had to say that Rick was much more popular than Cliff gave him credit for. There was often a party that he was invited to that he blew off but every once in a while there was a chance that Rick was in the mood for a good drunk party.
Like today.
“I’m just saying Cliff that i-it would be perfect,” Rick said, following his friend through set. Cliff had a scene to film today and so did Rick. They were both in full costume which was an odd look if everyone didn’t understand what was going on.
“Perfect for what?” Cliff asked, fixing the watch on his wrist.
“Getting Y/N to a d-date!” Rick shoved his friend and Cliff shook his head.
“I don’t think I need your help with that.”
“Yes you do. Come on, it’ll be f-fun. It’s a Hollywood party she’s never been to one.” “Oh so it’ll be fun to see her idols doing coke off each other?” Rick snorted.
“Of course.”
Cliff was of course hesitant to invite you at all. He didn’t think it would be quite your scene so he pushed the thought of his head but the next time he saw you he brought it up and you were clearly interested. Maybe it was just that it was a Hollywood party. He’d like to think it was because you liked him but there was also an inkling that you wanted to see Rick Dalton from Bounty Law. He was never that sure.
“Are you sure you wanna go?” Cliff asked, looking at you through the driver's window of Rick's car.
“I will drag you if I gotta Booth,” you said with a smile. You got into the backseat of the car and Rick looked you up and down, much more obviously then Cliff had when he was pretending not to. You looked amazing. Like a regular sixties queen, someone who you would see in the magazines and billboards and big screen.
You weren’t an actress quite yet but you were aspiring. You were a couple years younger than Rick and Cliff but a lot of years but you were of age and not young enough to raise any flags. It had of course crossed Cliffs mind you were using him to get to Rick to get to jobs but you didn’t seem like that type of girl.
“You look a-amazing,” Rick said with a flirtatious smile. You smiled proudly.
“Thank you very much Rick.”
“You look great doll,” Cliff said, glancing at you through the rear view mirror as he started to drive away. That caused you to blush.
“Thanks Cliff.”
You walked in with the two of them at your arm but everyone could tell you were leaning into Cliff.
The party was amazing. You had never seen anything like it. You knew each face that passed you but they didn’t know you. Audrey Hepburn walked beside you in an intense conversation with Anthony Perkins. You saw Elizabeth Taylor in the corner and Sharon Tate was sitting by the pool, flirting.
“Oh my Lord, Cliff is that Gregory Peck?” He nudged you.
“Yes. It is.”
You felt your knees go weak and Rick and Cliff were just barely able to catch you.
“I wanna go talk to Sharon alright, maybe I can get in a Polanski movie,” Rick said and you nodded as he walked away. You smiled, watching him approach a movie star with such ease. Granted he was a star so he had no problem with it like you did.
“This is groovy!” you screamed and let go of Cliff, walking over to where the drinks were. You poured yourself and Cliff one each and then walked back over to him, handing him the cup.
“Are you enjoying yourself?” he asked and you nodded quickly.
“I’m pretty sure I bumped into James Garner on the way over to you,” you whispered. He laughed and shook your head.
“I think maybe you’re a little in over your head.” You looked around and saw the dancing going on outside which Sharon and Rick had gotten caught up in.
“We should dance,” you stated. He shook his head quickly, raising his free hand in surrender.
“No.”
“Cliff we should dance!” You disgarded your now empty drink onto a table and tugged on his arm. He placed his drink beside yours and shook his head.
“Go dance with Anthony Perkins.”
“I don’t want to dance with Anthony Perkins, I wanna dance with you.” He felt that skip of his heart beat. The early days when he was married he felt it. You reminded him of those days every day you were around him.
“Really?” You paused.
“Okay maybe I’ll dance with Tony after you but I wanna give you the first dance.” He chuckled and allowed you to move his feet to the dance floor.
Just as you got there and started to move (you caught the eye of not only Cliff but many other movie stars if they were being honest) the upbeat song turned to a slower ballad which was odd for a party but not unheard of. You slowed down and looked around, catching the eyes of the couples dancing together all of the sudden. You cleared your throat and extended a hand to Cliff.
He raised an eyebrow and you shrugged.
He took your hand and then his hands were on your hips and he was dancing with you like he had never danced before.
“I like you,” you whispered.
“Be quiet, Tony will hear.” You shook your head and smiled up at him, edging him to say it back. He let out a sigh.
“I like you too.” You smiled.
“If you’ll excuse me I now have to go say the same thing to Anthony-” but before you could finish your sentence he was kissing you and you weren’t complaining.

A playlist dedicated to Seblaine
For seblaine week, day 3 @seblaineaffairs
I choose songs with lyrics that reminded me of seblaine and wrote a drabble with them.
1. I knew I loved you - Savage Garden
I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
Sebastian loved Blaine before he even met him at Dalton. He saw his performances with the warblers through videos and fell in love with him. He was hoping to meet him one day. Praying he'd come back to Dalton. When Blaine came back to Dalton it was too good to be true.
2. Whenever you need somebody - Rick Astley
When you're all alone and if you're feeling down
Call me, I'll be around
Whenever you need somebody
I'll bring my love to you
You don't have to say you love me
I just want to be with you
Lost inside your love is where I want to be
I'm just asking you to spend some time with me
Time and time you say you want to be free
And you can have some fun that's okay with me
Sebastian took his chance and invited Blaine for a drink. He told Blaine about him being a legend and that he regreted he missed him. Blaine was happy someone actually appreciated his talent. He was feeling down because he wasn't performing anything at McKinley. Sebastian was a fun and wild loving person. He told Blaine about his life in Paris. Blaine felt happy with Sebastian. Like he finally found someone warm and accepting. Blaine opened up to Sebastian and told him about the hardships he faces at McKinley. Sebastian told him he can call him anytime he wants and he'll listen to him. He can even meet him up anytime he likes.
3. I want you - Joseph Tilley
We can take it slow
They don't gotta know
Focus on my lovin baby let it take control
Dance the night away
Nothing left to say
You and me together baby that ain't no mistake
Blaine told Sebastian that if the warblers know that he's meeting with sebastian alone they'd be hurt because they're all like a big family. Sebastian told him that the warblers shouldn't know about them meeting so no one gets hurt.
4. Pay my rent - DNCE
When you love so good
Wanna give you every hour
If you said you could
I would give you all the power
Blaine and Sebastian started texting each other. The two of them got along so well. they texted every hour and almost every minute of each day. They also hung out together a lot. Blaine was so happy with Sebastian as if he found his soulmate. Sebastian was always flirty with Blaine so Blaine took it that Sebastian likes him. Blaine told Sebastian about his feelings and Sebastian kissed him in the middle of his confession. Sebastian promised him that he'll always make him happy.
5. Love me less - Max
I got too much dirt to come clean
Closets full of skeletons that you don't wanna see
Will you judge me? All my ugly?
I won't blame you if you do
No lies, don't wanna keep no secrets
Even if what I'ma say will leave speechless
No secrets
If I introduce you to my demons, tell me, baby
Would you love me less?
Sebastian and Blaine were happily dating but one time they met a group of boys who were from another school. they approached Sebastian. They seemed to know him. Sebastian just greeted them back and left while pulling Blaine's hand. Sebastian knew that his past would hunt him now and he should come clean to Blaine. He didn't want to keep any secrets away from him but he was worried Blaine would love him less. He gathered his courage and told him he used to date these boys. Blaine was surprised that Sebastian had a lot of ex boyfriends when he is just in highschool. Sebastian told him that he was ashamed of himself.
6. I Believe - Jonas Brothers
Every night, every day, how about every lifetime?
Yeah, I know what they say, and that's fine
'Cause I'm here to stay through the good and the bad times
Babe, you send me to space and you're mine, yeah
Blaine told him that he shouldn't be worried or ashamed. Having dated a lot of people doesn't make him bad in any way. Blaine told him that he'll never leave him ever for a stupid reason like that and he'll always stay by his side. Blaine told him that he believes in him.
7. Don't talk to me that way - Dayon
Say that you will change the way you walk,
The way you talk,
The way you wear your hair.
Change the way you dress, the way you kiss,
Everything cause you are scared that i'm might leave you
Oh why should I leave you
Blaine tries not to let Sebastian exs get into his head but he couldn't. They were all so handsome and attractive. So Blaine decides to change how he looks to impress Sebastian. He puts gel and wears tight clothes. Sebastian got confused by the sudden makeover and realizes that Blaine was insecure. So he tells Blaine that he shouldn't change anything. He loves Blaine the way he is. There is a reason why an ex is an ex it's because Sebastian wasn't into them.
8. Because you live - Jesse mcartney
Because you live and breathe
Because you make me believe in myself
When nobody else can help
Because you live girl
My world
Has everything I need to survive
Because you live, I live
Ever since Blaine started dating Sebastian he felt more confident. Sebastian always supported him and cheered him on. He always was the first to attend Blaine's performances. And he always took Blaine to celebrate after each performance. Blaine felt fortunate to have Sebastian by his side. Blaine told Sebastian that he loves him. Sebastian told him that he loves him more.
9. 5:32 pm- the deli
Everyday at five thirty two pm Sebastian makes Blaine a cup of coffee at his house. They sit on the balcony while hugging each other and watch the sunset together.
10. Do you remember the first time we met- 316
Blaine plays this song on the piano for Sebastian. He dedicates this song for him. His life has been from good to better because of him.
Blaine and Sebastian graduate highschool and enter the same college. They live together in the same dorm room. They spend their days studying together and cheering each other on. Sebastian decides to surprise Blaine on their college graduation day. He comes with a plan to propose to Blaine.
11. Never gonna give you up- Rick Astley
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Sebastian leaves the ring box on their desk so Blaine sees it and assume that Sebastian would propose to him today. He takes Blaine to a fancy restaurant. Blaine expects Sebastian to pop the question but Sebastian doesn't. Sebastian then goes to the mini stage they had for performers and announces to everyone that he's dedicating this song to his precious person. Blaine was sure that Sebastian would propose to him now but Sebastian sings Rick Astley's never gonna give you up the whole time then sits down and eats the rest of his food. Blaine was dumbfounded. Was he just rickrolled? Blaine was upset he told Sebastian he saw the ringbox and he thought Sebastian would propose to him. Sebastian told him that wasnt a ringbox for him it was a gift for his mom. Blaine felt embarrassed.
12. I do - 98 degrees
I do Cherish you
For the rest of my life
You don't have to think twice
I will love you still
From the depths of my soul
It's beyond my control
I've waited so long to say this to you
If you're asking do I love you this much
I do
On their graduation day. Sebastian puts the ring in his pocket. Him and Blaine wear their graduation robes and hats. They sit waiting for their turn to get their diplomas. When they got their diplomas they posed for pictures. A lot of their friends came and they were taking a picture of both Blaine and Sebastian. In one of the poses Sebastian kneeled down. Blaine was shocked he looked at Sebastian. In Sebastian's hand was the ring. Sebastian opened it. " Blaine Anderson. In These past few years we had the best times together. So will you continue living the best life with me together as my husband? I'll love you and cherish you until I die"
Their friends were taking a lot of photos and cheering them.
" omg of course, of course I do" Blaine's tears rolled down.
Sebastian put the ring around Blaine's finger and they kiss.

The Intern (CliffxReader Pt. 2)
Pt. 1 :)
Requested by @perawuat
@tealaquinn
Let me know if you wanna be added to either the basterds or OUATIH taglist :)
You grinned widely as you reached for your diploma. You looked out into the crowd, your radiant smile reminiscent of a sunflower as you looked to the cameras and did a peace sign with your left hand as you raised your diploma with your right.
You finally graduated.
You had a big job in a hotshot Hollywood production to show for all your hard work.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...
You looked out at the crowd, spotting dozens of familiar faces.
You found your family among the sea of pride.
And by them, two empty seats.
Rick and Cliff couldn't make it. They were in Italy...
You sighed softly. It as a bittersweet moment. They were doing the best they could, you couldn’t be mad at them.
The next few days your family kept you fairly busy. They’d flown in from out of state. You didn’t mind the company. Especially since the summer felt a little empty without Rick and Cliff to deal with.
But as the summer wound down, so did your work.
You moved out of your old apartment, leaving Ziggy, Rowan, and Odie...
You moved into a high-rise apartment in west Hollywood.
It was your first time ever living completely alone. You had a place all to yourself, no brothers barging in or bathroom hogging sisters. No roomates.
And still...
....no Cliff and Rick...
Nothing....
You sighed, and muttered a despondent, “Groovy...” As you looked up at your new building.
You took a breath, and took the elevator to the fifteenth floor, and walked down the long hall to your apartment.
You stopped, seeing a bouquet of red roses at the doorstep. You wondered if it was from the apartments landlady... She seemed like an old fashioned person.
You picked up a card that came with it, expecting it to be complimentary.
But...you knew that writing.
You smiled a little, and sighed a little more cheerfully, "oh Cliff..."
You sighed, flopping onto the second hand couch from a garage sale that you’d hastily strewn in the middle of the empty living room.
Your living room.
You read the card.
Cliff apologized for missing your graduation and not being there to help with the boxes. He also added a million little things to make you blush.
You held the letter against your chest as you presided over the rows of brown boxes scattered around the room.
You smiled a little as you looked through the first box. The first thing you picked out was a framed picture of you and Cliff.
You smiled, knowing you'd finally made a life of your own, and that he was part of it.
And you knew you really had it together a few months later, when you were invited to a party. A big Hollywood party.
The movie you'd worked on had been nominated for a few Academy Awards, including for best cinematography...which you'd had a big hand in.
You met a few big names at the party, and a few familiar faces. The night was young, and you danced there with the stars and the writers that gave Hollywood it's lights. After a while you stepped aside to grab a drink. You looked at the scene, your new friends, and future.
Rick had been rigth all along... You were going to make it big.
As you took a sip of your drink, you overheard something behind a nearby table.
There were a few older and frankly snobby producers talking, and avoiding the younger crowd. They'd been talking about some projects they had been looking into.
The name Rick Dalton came up, and you raised your eyebrow in curiosity.
"Rick Dalton is an old, washed up chain smoking alcoholic has-been who's still waiting to happen!" The group of producers broke out laughing as he went on, "Won't be long till he drinks himself into a grave!"
Your blood boiled...
You'd been trying to get Rick to get help. You'd been making progress, until he had to go to Italy.
The producer went on, "Or worse. Lets himself go, gets a beer belly, and lets those pothead hippies melt his brain! And that pal of his, Cliff Boot."
One of the other producers corrected him. "Booth."
He nodded, "Booth. Killed his woman, didn't he? What's he still doing on sets? Bad luck. Don't want Dalton or that scumbag anywhere near me."
Another man stood between you and the circle of snobs. He smiled, "Say, aren't you that talented young lady what worked on that western?"
You nodded, "Yes, sir."
He smiled, "Say, O'Mara, this is the young lady that worked on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!"
The producer that had been ripping on Rick and Cliff turned around, with a wide, yellow, broken grin, reached his hand out to shake yours, but you stepped away in disgust, maybe hurting your relatively young and vulnerable career.
But to you  it was worth every second seeing those snob's blood boiling.
"Don't get too cocky, O'Mara. You wrote Rick Dalton's first check, and then ripped him off when he got too big for you. Of course he's having a rough time, you all turned your backs on someone that made every single one of you a pretty goddamn penny, while he and Cliff are scratching and barely surviving. You should all be ashamed of yourselves, listening to that fucking rumor like a bunch of teenagers listening to Paul Anka. The man's a war hero, for crying out loud, and you're a fucking draft dodger. So no. Don't ask me to shake the hand of a man who turned his back on people he owes everything to."
Before things escalated, the man that had attemtped to introduce you to the producers stepped in, spoke fast, made them laugh, and ordererd drinks all around.
As the producers picked up gossip about other 'has beens,' the mystery man took you aside, "I like your work, and I like your spunk, you're a good kid."
You smiled a little, and he went on, "How about I let you in on a little secret, kid? All those old boys back there? Tearing apart actors because they’re jealous. And when they’re not with each other, they tear each other apart, because they all want this." He raised up a briefcase.
"What's that?" You laughed a little, seeing the quirky, odd character gripping the case as if it were worth the world..
He smiled, "Well, kid, this here's the next big thing in Hollywood what's gon' get somebody an Oscar, or an Academy Award round this time next year."
"So you're a writer?"
He nodded with glee, "Writer, director, as of now sole producer. But I still need my crew, and my stars. And kid, I seen the wonders you've done down at NBC and for that picture. So, once I get this show on the road, are you willing to get in on it?"
You could not have felt happier, "Absolutely!"
He smiled, "Well then, I need some stars, don't I? How about I talk to your friends about this, huh?"
"M-my friends?"
He nodded, "Mr. Dalton, and his stuntman, I hear they're a damn good team!"
Tumblr media
You nodded, proud that some people still knew them as what they were, "That's right, sir."
He smiled, "I pictured Rick in this role. It's not exactly his regular western character, but, it's new, its fresh! It'll give him a new face, a new chance! I see him as...." He grinned, looking into the distance as he waved his hands, as if the name was appearing in front of you on a screen, "Hudson Murdock! International spy!" He sighed in satisfaction, "We’ll knock Bond out  of the water! And probably knock that guy, Cliff into the water!"
You both chuckled, and he asked, "Think they'll be interested?"
"I think so, sir."
He smiled, "Please, kid, call me Rudy!" He handed you a business card, and then a pen and a paper so you could write your number, Rick, and Cliff's down for him.
He took the paper after you were done, and hid it away safely with the script he guarded with his life, "Be in touch soon, will ya kid? They'll be home from Italy, soon I'll bet."
You nodded, "Yes, sir."
He titled his head, "Come on, kid."
You sighed and smiled a little, "Rudy."
He smiled, "Alright, that's better, kid." He gestured to the growing crowd of young party goers, "Go on, have fun before the real work starts!"
Despite the rocky moments with producers, and the inevitable burning of a bridge or two, you couldn't get over the fact that you'd just gotten Rick and Cliff a new big shot in Hollywood...
Still, the adrenaline and fun started to wash down the more the night went on. By the time you were home that night, you were a little more than just uneasy.
Cliff was supposed to call you and let you know he'd made it home safe with Rick.
You were sure they wre going to get blind drunk together, 'one last time,' thinking it was the end of the line...
Of course, they didnt' know about your development...and you'd let them have their fun for the night.
You could wait a million years for Cliff.
Or...you thought...
It just wasn't like him
Even in Italy, he called you every single night. Now that he was home, there was no excuse.
You spent the next half hours or so debating and reasoning with yourself....
Maybe they knocked out because of jet lag? Maybe they were drunk because they drank on the plane? Maybe the phones weren't working? Maybe he went straight to get Brandy? Maybe he wasn on his way to yours?
The possibilities were endless....
Still, there was that constant, nagging, feeling wringing your heart...
Ringing...
The phone was rining.
On the third ring, you picked up.
It was Rick.
You glanced up at the clock.
12:55 AM...
Your eyes went wide as Rick quickly and calmly tried to explain every thing that happened in the last half hour without giving you a panic attack.
12:56 AM...
"HE WHAT?!"
Rick replied, "H-he's o-k, don't w-worry! He-"
"He got stabbed! And-"
"He-He'll be ok, Y/n, everything's fine!"
"And you? Are you ok?!"
He chuckled a little out of tension, but mostly because he just missed hearing from a friend like you, "I'm uh...I'm actually at the neighbor's right now. Everything's ok, Y/n, don’t worry."
Tumblr media
"The Polanski's?" You felt a little ease in your shoulders, knowing Rick finally got what he'd been wishing for for months.
"Yeah..." You could practically hear the smile, "But I'll meet you and Cliff bright and early tomorrow. We're ok, honey, don't worry. Get some sleep, he's ok."
"Ok..."
Rick sighed, knowing you better than you gave him credit for, "Oh, and Y/n?"
"Yeah, Rick?" You held the phone between your shoulder and your cheek as you reached between the couch cushions for your car keys.
Rick chuckled, "Drive safe."
You smiled a little and shook your head once.
You practically raced to the hospital, giving Cliff and every other stunt  double in Hollywood a run for their moeny.
Your heart skipped a beat, stopped, and broke al at once when you saw Cliff again... After six months...t felt like a lifetime,
And it felt like even longer seeing him like that.
You knew he was going to be alright. Rick told you so. The doctors told you. The nurses told you...
But you didn't believe it until you saw him for yourself.
"Cliff..."
He looked up at you, clearly tired. Of course, the acid, the fight, the stabbing, and the morphine were behind that. Still, he shifted trying to get up to get to you.
"No, no, stay down, it's ok..." You sat by him, rested your hands in his and smiled softly.
To him you were nothing less than an angel...
Especially with the drugs (legal and illegal) and the bright white hospital lights behind you. "Y/n....you...you came? Told Rick to tell ya to get some sleep I-"
"That's crazy talk."
He took your hand and pulled it up slowly to his lips, and kissed your hand softly. He looked up with soft eyes, "I'm sorry, baby...I should've gone home, should've gone to see ya..."
You shook your head, "If you had, there's no telling what would've happened...Best not to think of that, not now."
"I'm sorry I missed it."
You shook your head, and rested your hadn against hisncheek, "Best is yet to come, Cliff." You smiled cheekily.... you'd tell him about the party the next day.
Until then... You gave him  a kiss, and said, "Get some rest, Cliff."
"Only if you do, baby..."
Tumblr media
You nodded, "I will, I will."
He chuckled a little, through the meds and drugs, and mumbled and hummed "Dream a little dream of me..." as he fell asleep, holding onto you desparately.
Somewhere deep in his mind, he was scared you were a hallucination...He wanted to hold you enar and dear. He wished Italy and that night never happened. He wanted nothing more than to be by your side.
When you woke  up, it was nearly noon, and the sunlight was streaming through the blinds. You'd fallen asleep on the chair by Cliff's bed, with your head against his chest. His arm was around you still. And you could hear the warm hum of his voice through his chest as you woke up slowly.
You could hear Rick too.
"Goddamn, Y/n and Francesca are gonna get along, they sleep like logs."
You smiled a little as you stood up to hug Rick.
He smiled at you, and shook his head, "You wanna tell me how the hell you managed to save me and Cliff's careers in one night?"
You shrugged, and playfully "Hey, when you got it, you got it."
Cliff guffawed, but then immediately held his wound, "Shit, Y/n, you oughta be the one carryin' Rick's load then!"
You rolled you reyes with a cheaky smile and sighed, "Anyone would've done the same."
Rick sighed, "Oh, honey, you don't know Hollywood just yet."
Cliff said, "What we're tryna say baby is thank you."
"Ah, it's nothing." "You got us some work!" Cliff looked at Rick, and they were both relieved, knowing it wasn't quite the end of the line. "We knew you'd make it far..." Rick saw the way Cliff smiled and looked at you. It was all clearer now that Cliff wasn't wearing sunglasses. Rick smirked a little, as he chuckled, "I'll go ahead an' leave you two alone for a while." You covered your face as your rubbed your eyes, "Oh, come on Rick!" Cliff chuckled, "I wIsH!" You looked to Cliff, "Cliff!" He laughed a little as he reached out for you. You heard Rick closing the door as he left. You sat by Cliff again, and he kissed you. "Told you everything would be ok, kid." "Yeah?" "Yeah..." He nodded. "Rick was right. You made it. You're not just an intern anymore...and me and Rick are gonna be ok, and you n me are more than ok." You smirked a little, looking down a tthe ground for a moment, then back at Cliff, "Yeah, we are..." He rested his hands on the sides of your face, his thumbs pressed against your cheek. It wasn't something he did often, but you weren't complaining. Because in that moment, everything mattered. The past six months had been hell, and the past night was a nightmarish trip. His blue eyes were wide open then. Everything realy was ok... And you could see that in his eyes: The hope and love the 'washed up' stuntman hadn't felt in a decade or two. And he owed it all to you, the intern.

A Year in Review: The 25 Best Films of 2019
This list may seem a few months late from the rest of the media, but I consider the movie season to stretch 14 months, from the start of the Sundance Film Festival in January through the end of the Oscars ceremony in February. This year's movie season was shortened as the 92nd Academy Awards were held about three weeks earlier than usual, commencing on Feb. 9. Of course, South Korean director Bong Jon-ho's "Parasite" took home the Best Picture prize making history as the Academy's first-ever non-English language film to take home the top award.
Now that the Oscars have officially wrapped up, and the 2020 movie season is revving up (to a weak start), I feel comfortable with sharing my favorite 25 films of 2019. From box office hits to smaller gems, below is a breakdown of the top films that debuted last year.
25. “The Beach Bum,” directed by Harmony Korine
Tumblr media
24. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” directed by Marielle Heller
Tumblr media
23. “Toy Story 4,” directed Josh Cooley
Tumblr media
22. “Alita: Battle Angel,” directed by Robert Rodriguez
Tumblr media
21. “The Lighthouse,” directed by Robert Eggers
Tumblr media
20. “A Long Day’s Journey into Night,” directed by Bi Gan
Tumblr media
19. “Doctor Sleep,” directed by Mike Flanagan
Tumblr media
18. “6 Underground,” directed by Michael Bay
Tumblr media
17. “Uncut Gems,” directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie
Tumblr media
16. “The Nightingale,” directed by Jennifer Kent
Tumblr media
15. “Hustlers,” directed by Lorene Scafaria
Tumblr media
Lorene Scafaria's "Hustlers" might be the most fun film of 2019, composed of brilliant shots and serving as a spotlight to showcase Jennifer Lopez's talents. Mostly set during the 2008 recession, the film is a condemnation of late stage capitalism while following a group of strippers, played by Lopez as well as Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart and more, who drug wealthy men and steal from them — until their crimes catch up with them.
14. “The Farewell,” directed by Lulu Wang
Tumblr media
An impressive debut feature from Lulu Wang, "The Farewell" is a special kind of family tale, featuring a breakout performance from comedian Awkwafina. Rooted from Wang's true story (which was first turned into an episode of "This American Life"), "The Farewell" is unlike any kind of family drama you've seen; a deeply personal, sad but ultimately uplifting film about the things we choose to tell (and not tell) those closest to us.
13. "Asako I & II," directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi
Tumblr media
Following up his six-hour film "Happy Hour," Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "Asako I & II" clocks in at just two hours but still manages to pack in a number of the same themes. Here, a young woman named Asako (Erika Karata) briefly falls in love with a handsome boy named Baku (Masahiro Higashide) in her hometown in rural Japan before he suddenly vanishes. After moving to Tokyo a few years later, Asako spots Baku — but he tells her his name is Ryohei (also played by Higashide). From there, a relationship blooms and unravels. Similar to "Happy Hour," Hamaguchi's effortless ability to draw an emotional response from the ebbs and flows of deep, personal relationships (between friends, family, lovers) is unparalleled.
12. "Climax," directed by Gasper Noé
Tumblr media
Gasper Noé is often hit-or-miss with most movie audiences. His films are always provocative and his latest feature "Climax" is no exception. Set in the 90s, a French dance troupe rehearses a routine ("Climax" opens with the single best scene of 2019) before celebrating for the night with some snacks and sangria — which someone has spiked with LSD. The rest of the film plays out like a perverse whodunnit while the group, led by Sofia Boutella, tries to figure out what's going on before losing their minds and allowing deep secrets ruin their lives.
11. "The Irishman," directed by Martin Scorsese
Tumblr media
Martin Scorsese's long-awaited return to the gangster flick resulted in a three-and-a-half-hour epic. "The Irishman," which reunites Marty with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, also stars Al Pacino (the first time the actor appeared in a film by the acclaimed director), as Jimmy Hoffa. The film is Scorsese's most meditative work outside his films about religion. There is as much subtext to the film as there is text, making "The Irishman" a dazzling feat of filmmaking and storytelling, featuring outstanding performances from its three leads.
10. "Gloria Bell," directed by Sebastián Lelio
Tumblr media
Since his 2017 breakout film "A Fantastic Woman," Sebastián Lelio's career has been quite quiet. Nevertheless, the English-language remake of his own Chilean-Spanish film "Gloria," re-titled "Gloria Bell," is a stunning piece of filmmaking. Starring Julianne Moore as the titular character, the film follows the middle age single woman through the ups and downs of her dating and family life. It's an unassumingly beautiful film that is gorgeous and features one of Moore's best performances to date.
09. "Her Smell," directed by Alex Ross Perry
Tumblr media
Alex Ross Perry's career has dramatically shifted since working with Elisabeth Moss on the 2015 thriller "Queen of Earth." Instead of making quirky New York City centric love stories (a la Noah Baumbach and Woody Allen before him), Perry once again teams up with Moss for "Her Smell." Structured like a five-act play, the film follows Becky Something (Moss), the leader of an all-girl punk group. In what is Moss's best performance to date, Becky is an addict and downright evil at times as she manipulates those around her. It's a dizzying feat of filmmaking that puts Moss to the test.
08. "Ad Astra," directed by James Gray
Tumblr media
Brad Pitt won the Oscar for his performance in "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood," but "Ad Astra" was his best performance in 2019. Following up his 2016 masterpiece "The Lost City of Z," director James Gray continues on his path of making ambitious epics, moving from the Amazon to the depths of our solar system. Here Pitt's Roy McBride is on a mission to find his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who is literally lost in space. Roy has to confront his issues with his father as he battles moon pirates, rabid baboons and his inner demons. "Ad Astra" is not only an impressive film for Grey, but Pitt's turn as the sad spaceman is nuanced and shows how much range the Hollywood icon actually has.
07. "Honeyland," directed by Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska
Tumblr media
"Honeyland" made Oscars history when it became the first film to be nominated in both Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature — and for good reason. Clocking in at just 85 minutes, Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska's stunningly beautiful film follows Hatidže Muratova, a beekeeper living in a remote village in North Macedonia. But "Honeyland" is so much more than that; it's a universal story about our delicate ecosystem, fickle Mother Nature, taking care of our family and having bad neighbors. In what may seem like a specific tale turns out to be incredibly relatable, with Stefanov and Kotevska achieving some of the best nonfiction filmmaking in years.
06. "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood," directed by Quentin Tarantino
Tumblr media
Quentin Tarantino's penultimate film "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" is a love letter to Tinseltown. Here, he honors the summer of 1969 as the film industry is thriving with newcomers like Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and aging stars like Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio in his best performance ever). Rick is a TV villain and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is along for the ride. "OUATIH" is more of a hangout movie than something one would expect from QT; it's more in line with the sophistication of "Jackie Brown" than the over-the-top cartoon violence found in "Django Unchained." Like Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," "OUATIH" is a contemplative and meditative look at aging, youth culture and America through the prism that is Tarantino.
05. "Midsommar," directed by Ari Aster
Tumblr media
Following up his horror masterpiece "Hereditary" just one year later, Ari Aster returned with the daylight gonzo vacation nightmare "Midsommar." Like with "Hereditary" and its star Toni Collette, Ari gets a stunning performance out of rising star Florence Pugh, who plays Dani. She just suffered a major tragedy and is decides to go on a trip to a remote village in Sweden with her aloof boyfriend (Jack Reynor) and his college pals. The trip, of course, is worse than anyone could have imagined and plays out in complete sunlight, making Aster's daytime nightmare incredibly upsetting and one of the most vibrant horror films ever made.
04. "Pain and Glory," directed by Pedro Almodóvar
Tumblr media
Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar returned last year with "Pain and Glory," unlike any movie he's made in his nearly 40-year career. It's a deeply personal film and one of his most quiet and contemplative. It also reunites the filmmaker with Antonio Banderas — in his best role ever — who starred in Almodóvar's earlier films and his 2011 horror film "The Skin I Live in." Despite it being far removed from Almodóvar's oeuvre, it still fits in snugly with his work, resulting in a beautiful and self-reflexive film about age, lost love and the past.
03. "Little Women," directed by Greta Gerwig
Tumblr media
On paper, remaking "Little Women" in 2019 might have seemed like a fool's errand. But Greta Gerwig's take on the classic story, and her follow up to her breakthrough film "Lady Bird," gave a new purpose to Louisa May Alcott's centuries old story about the March sisters living in Concord, Mass. During the Civil War. Here, Gerwig assembles the hottest cast of 2019 (Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Eliza Scanlen, Bob Odenkirk, Louis Garrel, Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep), enlists Alexander Displat for the score and Yorick Le Saux to carry out luscious cinematography. But it's Gerwig's breakdown of the story and her daring changes to the novel that make her rendition of "Little Women" vital and beautiful. She manages to retain the Alcott's tone and vibrance while bringing something wholly original to a story we've seen time and time again, proving Gerwig is a master storyteller.
02. "Parasite," directed by Bong Joon-ho
Tumblr media
Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" took the world by storm. A true tour de force, the South Korean film started hot out of the gate, winning the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, blazing its way to win Best Picture at the Oscars earlier this month. And rightfully so — "Parasite" is a relatable tale about class struggle unlike any other film in its genre. Joon-ho, who has other masterpieces under his belt ("Mother," "Memories of Murder"), is in total control of his film; a true craftsman and storyteller, who knows how to build tension, introduce bits of comedy and create compelling characters. The film is complex yet fully understandable; a truly accomplished piece of filmmaking that will become a gateway for world cinema.
01. "Marriage Story," directed by Noah Baumbach
Tumblr media
Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story" is his most sophisticated and considered film to date. Following a couple (Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson) going through a divorce, Baumbach crafts a personal story with a raw script that is executed by astonishing performances from its two leads and its wonderful supporting cast (Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Merritt Wever). For so many films about finding love, there are few that are directly about the end of a relationship or divorce and Baumbach's intimate tale is a dazzling feat of not only writing, but acting and understanding of how all the moving pieces of a movie can coalesce into a breathtaking piece of art.

Ocean Eyes pt.1 (Cliff Booth)
Summary: It seems like Cliff Booth was the love of your life. However, the relationship didn't work out and all you're left with are painful memories.
Author's Note: I'm not sure if I'm gonna make a second part to this. Let me know if you want it! Hope you enjoy ♡
No, it was all wrong and she knew it. She should just forget already and stop drowning in the past. But it wasn't that easy.
•••
Maybe Cliff wasn't just this type of guy, maybe he wasn't meant to be but he made her feel in a certain way no one had ever made her feel. She felt flowers growing inside her when he just smiled at her. His eyes were like the deepest ocean - full of secrets, unexpected moves and love.
He was just like the spring. Every time he was with her, she felt every single piece of her alive. He made her fall in love with the world again.
•••
Summer 1969 was definitely a life-changing experience. She met Cliff at one of the pool parties her friend Rick usually threw to get blind drunk not with just Cliff or her.
She was sitting on a garden bench between Rick and her new friend Steve McQueen. They all smoked their cigarettes as they shared one bottle of vodka. She and Rick usually drank margaritas or beer but they decided that today is the day to try new things.
"You didn't!" she laughed and touched Steve's shoulder to make sure he heard it as well. They were already quite drunk so the story Rick just told them was even funnier than it actually was.
"Oh, I so did! I-i was so drunk i forgot all the l-lines right at t-the filming! You wouldn't like my caravan after t-that scene. I-i was so damn a-angry at myself!" Rick cheerfully reassured her and laughed along even though back in time, it wasn't funny at all. He felt miserable, down and basically was having an existential crisis. But now, after the era was long behind him, he felt better than ever.
"I feel sorry for you, man but at the same time it's really a great story." Steve joined the conversation and indulged himself a huge gulp of their drink. "By the way, where's your stuntman, Rick? It's a shame you haven't introduced me yet!" she frowned at her friend but thanks to the alcohol she was giggling again in the next second. He took her around her shoulders and almost whispered, "C-can't wait to meet h-him, right b-baby?" She pushed him away gently and laughed, "Shut up, you Hollywood star and come dance with me, will ya?"
They left Steve behind them but she managed to sent him a goodbye smile and whispered: "See you later!" He just raised the bottle and gave her a cheeky wink.
She didn't know how long they had been dancing but none of them cared. Rick somehow got a brand new bottle of vodka and already drank a little. "This is amazing, sweetheart! No fucking hippies, just great people!" he shouted, picked her up and spinned around. She just laughed at his behaviour and shook her head. Her favourite Rick was this kind of drunk Rick. He was the best friend she had ever had.
"I think I'm gonna have a little break. I'll smoke and come back, okay?" she gave him a soft kiss on a cheek and quickly disappeared from the "dance floor" to the garden. She breathed out and brushed her hair.
The night was comfortably warm, there was a slight breeze and she could even see some stars. She smiled to herself, put a cigarette between her lips and lighted it.
"Ehm, excuse me. I'm Rick Dalton's stuntman. Do you know where I can find him?"
•••
It all started with this innocent question and she knew she was fucked up the moment she saw him. Even though it was night, his eyes were hidden behind a pair of sunglasses but as soon as he took them off, she could promise these were the most beautiful eyes she'd ever seen. He surely didn't fit in the regular Hollywood crowd either - Hawaiian shirt, regular jeans and moccasins were definitely a something. And that's maybe what she liked about Cliff Booth the most - eyes and his different personality.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
I mostly like Quentin Tarantino's movies, but when I saw this in the theater I considered it one of his worst. But I still liked some stuff about it. I liked the thick atmosphere of late-sixties Los Angeles, and I liked Leonardo DiCaprio's character's arc & his performance, and I liked some of the playful touches, even though some of them feel indulgent. "Indulgence" is a big concern when it comes to evaluating QT's movies. Sometimes his indulgences are charming and sometimes not so much. I'm kind of hoping a second viewing will make me like this movie a bit more. Okay, here goes…
Vintage Columbia logo. That kind of thing always works well on me.
First five minutes or so are cinematic in a familiar way, not much to note. But at about 0:06:15 there's a jarring little interruption where a narrator tells us LD just lied. The only moment of narration at all.
Then Al Pacino is reflecting on some of the movies he's been watching, and we see some clips. They look kind of vintage, but also kind of Tarantino-y. Like, that scene where LD torches Nazis doesn't actually look like it could be from the 60s.
"Bounty Law! Starring Rick Dalton!" Then a cut to a dorky TV musical sketch. Kind of funny. Not subtle. I love that announcer voice that says "Bounty Law!"
One thing that often works well in QT movies is when he has an actor deliver, and savor delivering, a weighty minute or so of dialogue that really sets up a situation. Think Christopher Walken's monologue in Pulp Fiction or the first scene with Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds. This AP conversation where he talks to LD about where to take his career is like a mini version of one of those but doesn't last as long.
0:15:10 - First really nice period shot of LA. Very nice to look at.
I think the intended audience for this movie knows details about the Manson murders that most moviegoers don't actually know. For example, the ominous close-up of the sign for Cielo Drive. I don't think it's a mistake; I think he's knowingly alienating some viewers so he can give a better experience to those who do know about them. So I can't imagine recommending this movie without also strongly suggesting studying the Manson murders first.
Brad Pitt speeds down a boulevard in West Hollywood, a filming location which has been very lovingly decorated in the style of the period. The production design of this movie was rightly heralded.
Sequence with BP in his trailer making dinner for himself and his dog. Vivid; at one point they cut to a closeup of a pinup poster. Doesn't seem to be a reason for that except for "I'm Quentin Tarantino and I do whatever I feel like". Indulgent, is what I'm saying.
Also indulgent is this minute we're spending watching Roman Polanski drive to this party at the Playboy mansion.
I don't remember noticing this before, but that's Damian Lewis playing Steve McQueen and that's kind of perfect.
Scene where Kurt Russell is telling LD that BP has a creepy vibe and killed his wife, then we cut abruptly to apparently a scene of BP having a mundane argument with his wife maybe… okay, leaves the audience wanting more info, but maybe in kind of an irritating way.
Now this scene with Bruce Lee holding forth. Bruce Lee probably didn't generally speak in arrogant, bullying Quentin Tarantino monologues. Entertaining scene though.
But the left-me-wanting conversation from the previous scene helps this scene with Bruce Lee be more tense. Also the not-ringing-true snottiness of Bruce Lee makes it funny how that fight goes down.
0:52:30 - Okay, LD is in costume as a bad guy on a show, and he's got the long hippy hair that was spoken of in the AP scene. Just saying, I like that it was described and now we're seeing what I'd pictured.
And now this memorable conversation between LD and the little girl actress. The kid acts so grown up. This could have failed because of course no eight year old talks like this girl. But this scene is awesome. And without movies by QT, there aren't scenes like this.
Now Margot Robbie. We've seen her in a few scenes so far as Sharon Tate, but she's only been depicted as a dancing starlet bopping around town. For those of us that know she's a Manson victim, it works in a certain way. But does it work otherwise?
Okay, this is a peculiar part of the movie, it's pretty fun but kind of insider-y. LD is talking about being in the running for Steve McQueen's role in The Great Escape, and they edit in some outstanding CGI scenes of LD in the actual movie of The Great Escape. Playful, but just a weird bit of color…
…but then here's this next scene where MR, playing Sharon Tate, happens upon a cinema playing a movie she's in, and after a leisurely-paced interaction with the cinema workers, she goes in and watches the movie. Unlike the CGI trickery demonstrated in the last scene with LD, we watch actual Sharon Tate on screen. MR is visibly delighted to see "herself", and to hear the audience reacting to her performance. It all works, maybe more in spite of than because of QT's ever-present choice-broadcasting (which is also why we get a good look at MR's feet in this scene).
This is followed immediately by the sequence of the TV show LD is shooting. More playful indulgence. We see the scene edited as it probably would have been edited in 1969, but shot with modern cinematography, and interrupted by LD calling for his line, then backing up and redoing some of the scene. Can it be justified beyond just the undeniable fact that it's pretty interesting? Maybe that's enough. Maybe I'm being a snob, but also, what, was I not supposed to acknowledge it at least?
Stuff now starting with BP picking up Margaret Qualley's dirty hippy flirty cultist character. Before she even has any lines, the screen is practically bulging from the force of MQ's personality. It's entertaining.
1:28:30 - More of the TV show. We get to see LD's character be a good actor, and impress the director and the kid actor, which touches him, it's nice.
It's an hour and 38 minutes into the movie, and now we're to the scene on Spahn's Movie Ranch. I'm already thinking that by now we should be deeper into some kind of story than we are, and now this scene that I remember vividly. Not totally in a bad way, but for all the good things about it, it is stretched way out. Suspense is built up, skillfully, but without the kind of payoff we'd probably like. I mean, it's like a horror movie, with the rat squirming in the trap and the tense music and the "HE MAY BE TIRED" line from Dakota Fanning, but then it's back to not being a horror movie….
…in fact, it's on to this charismatic-tough-guy scene that feels Pulp-Fiction-y. Our MINDS are BLOWN that he hit the guy so hard and made the cultists so mad, it's a fantasy come to life, but just in a movie!!! This stuff is long, but not THAT boring, but maybe it could have been a little less boring, plus more relevant to later events.
LD and BP are now watching an episode of a show he'd done. Way more violent than TV shows probably were in 1969. They like watching his little "heavy" role and chuckling about it.
Then a SIX MONTHS LATER card, and some narration for the first time since that little jokey bit in the beginning. Also jokey is the fact that this new section is narrated, VERY narrated, and is the fact that Kurt Russell is the narrator also jokey?
2:02:50 - "…going back to Missouri." LD's character is from Missouri? With that accent? Is this also an in-joke?
The aforementioned narration persists for a long time. Seems gratuitous. QT was clearly like "We'll do the first two hours of the picture without a narrator, and then suddenly there will be a whole bunch of stupid narration hahahahahahaha! No one else would do that!!! That's reason enough for me to do it!!!!"
Finale is going on now with the Manson cultist killer people approaching the house. If you know what really happened, you're freaking out. But if you know what really happened and you already know how this movie changes that story… it's entertaining. What I'm saying is that it's funny this second time through, without the worry about seeing what really transpired.
"And you were on a horsie!" "Nah something dumber than that" Hahaha BP is super funny in this scene.
Dang, the dog just mutilates Tex, and it's funny!
He violences that woman very very very much, it's nuts, kind of funny but so disturbing.
LD flamethrowers that girl in the pool. She's in the pool. But still dies from being on fire. /shrug
We never did get the whole story about BP killing his wife.
The last scene, MR talks to LD, inviting him up for a friendly drink with her friends. It ends with us thinking how nice it would be if she and her friends hadn't been the victims of a cruel slaughter just moments earlier. That's not a bad way to end a movie. But it's a long movie, and I'll say this again: indulgent. You might not feel that in on the jokes, and even if you do, you might not have as much time for them as this movie requires.
