do you ever think about how in the static shock show, there was a sequence where this girl named madelyn used her powers to get into richie's mind and literally all richie had was virgil in his head which lead to virgil's secret identity being exposed? and richie hated it when virgil would hang out with his girls? and richie was wearing an earring? like ik they confirmed it + richie was gay in comics but this had more gay subtext than 90% of modern cartoons nowadays IDCCC

DP x DC Prompt #26
Tucker hadn't heard from his cousin, Richie, in a while. It wasn't the biggest deal, Tucker has lots of cousins he doesn't necessarily talk to. But, well, when he sees someone who looks a lot like Richie in the news. Well, it was concerning.
Since when did Richie have superpowers?

this is quite possibly the funniest way I’ve ever seen a cartoon “subtly” hint at a character being gay to beat network censorship bc oh my fucking god

Richie's face has been giving me some trouble still, but his suit is getting easier.

I can't be the only one who thought that in "A League Of Their Own" (Static Shock S03, E06 & E07) the show insinuated that Richie is, at least partly, like a computer, right? Or that he is partly a computer.
After the fight at the Watchtower, Brainiac infects Backpack and then Richie. Except, I'm not sure if Brainiac actually used Richie as a host. In order to defeat him, Static had to shut down Backpack, which also freed Gear, so that meant he was in the Backpack. Brainiac used thought controlling discs on the League members, but not on Richie. His controlling device was different and seemed to be integrated with him, like if the virus infected him, not just controlled his thoughts.

Later on, Brainiac basically fuses with Richie, turning him temporarily into, em, this. Some cyborg looking form. I'm not sure what purpose was this supposed to serve.

And then there's this. Not only is he describing Richie similarly to how he described himself, it's also interesting how he is still using Richie as his host. He could use backpack or just download itself into the robotic body, but no, he choses to say inside the body of the super smart teenager.
It does make sense for Brainiac to do that. After all, Gear's meta abilities basically turned him into a living computer. I just think it's fun to think about it more literally.

If the Static Shock episode sons and fathers came out today it would be labeled woke nonsense and people would be writing essays defending Richie’s father calling him a hard working family man and his hatred in hip hop definitely isn’t rooted in his racism he probably just likes good ol fashion country music and that doesn’t make him racist he just likes different music and that Richie was too sensitive and shouldn’t have told his dad he hated him or some shit

This isn't the best image of it, but here are Virgil, Richie, and Daisy realizing that there are thefts happening at the mall at the beginning of "Replay".
The titular metahuman villain of the episode is Johnny Morrow, who starred in a show when younger and isn't coping well with the loss of the spotlight. This is highlighted by having Neil Patrick Harris voice him. Due to an incident in his first clash with Static, Replay/Johnny gains access to a 'copy' of Static that he orders to commit crimes to ruin the superhero's reputation.
The narrative timing for this works out- it's far enough into the show that the 'broken pedestal' element for Richie and the civilians feels earned, but not so far into the show that they don't seem foolish for not considering superpowered shenanigan as an explanation for Static's apparent turn to the villains.
I don't think the show meant to have any special meaning to having a white guy frame Virgil for crimes, particularly as the police chief is also African-American. The writers probably just wanted to touch on what happens when a child star stops being a child and/or somebody had access to Neil Patrick Harris as a talent and the storyline spun out from there. There's also the fact that a villain framing a hero for crimes (with the variant for brainwashing or blackmailing them into committing crimes) is a staple in the superhero genre.
Richie ends up believing Virgil's claim of there being an 'evil twin' and following him to the TV station, broadcasting Static's confrontation with Replay that proves the former's innocence.
With that wrapped up, up next to watch & review is the first season finale!
