This is so real, especially considering Duke's themes with light/daytime.
A big part of Duke's arc when he first became The Signal is his mother's philosophy that people are their truest self in the morning. The idea of things being clearer in the light reoccurs multiple times and influences a lot of Duke's decisions.
It also connects with Duke's honesty. Duke has NEVER been afraid to speak his mind, even before he was "in the Batfamily" he would CONSTANTLY call out Batfamily members. He expects honesty from the people he's working with too.
Duke demystifying Batman and Robin, then spreading the Robin mantle throughout his community, really speaks to how different Duke's parallels to Batman's darkness are. He brings a lot to light, so to speak.
So many Duke Thomas thoughts and how he views Batman and Robin not as untouchable giants but as symbols of community. His first appearance in canon his family saved Bruce Wayne's life without knowing who he was simply because they were good people. The first time he's in a batman story Batman manages to defeat the Riddler and save the day. The second time they meet his parents get jokerized and Batman promises to do everything he can to save them but while he stops everyone from dying and stops the Joker he vanishes presumed dead with Duke's parents still jokerized. Batman failed and Duke doesn't hold it against him but he does end up forming a community of Robins because Batman is just one man. Duke has seen him win and Duke has seen him lose. He can't be everywhere and save everyone. But they can save each other.
On top of that there's the fact he's introduced at the time where Damian had died. Batman had already failed Robin for the third time, a child he was responsible for dead on his watch, and so when Duke takes up the Robin mantle it's not to do with Batman as a person needing him. It's that Gotham needs all the fighters it can get and Robin is a symbol for that, defiance against all odds. Kill one Robin and five more will join because you cannot outsource the safety of Gotham to a single man no matter how much he talks about standing alone in the darkness. He never was alone and he never will be. Robin will always be there too.

as someone who doesn't have the time, nor money, for the batman comics and is relying solely on AO3 for content;
who the fuck was going to tell me how the Titans Tower fight actually went down.
Jason "Still think you're that good?" Todd
Timothy "Yes." Drake (while he was dying)
THAT'S GOLD WHY ARE WE PORTRAYING HIM AS A WET KITTEN? give the boy his sass back i BEG

so I've been rewatching Static Shock because of @bearsspace 's Duke and Virgil art, and I'm not even a season in and its already so clear how good they'd get along.
Like Virgil's story focuses on not only actual racism and systemic issues, but the allegory of race within the bang babies/metahumans. Duke's story also does this with We Are Robin and Robin War; the robins are a group of mostly disenfranchised kids who rise up to protect themselves and their communities while being targeted by cops. WAR also makes direct comparisons to racism/systemic issues.
Besides their stories having some similar themes, they're also similar in the way they interact with their communities directly. (Let me mention here that Duke's mom and Virgil's dad are both social workers). Both Duke and Virgil are able to talk and connect with the people they're saving, and this includes the "villains" they encounter who really just need help (ohoho! another part of their stories connected to systemic issues).
Of course a lot of heroes do this but it's special for Virgil and Duke. Virgil's able to connect and help his foes not only because he's a bang baby, but because the standing he already has in his community. Like he spends a lot of time at the community centre and it means a lot to him. One of the things I really love about Virgil is that if he wants to get info on someone he starts knocking on doors and talking to people. It's special for Duke because not only does a big part of his story centre around bringing a community together to protect itself, but in contrast to the rest of the bats, his whole thing is LITERALLY being in the daylight. Like the whole premise of his character is being a beacon, Duke will always have a connection with the public the rest of the bats can't.
I also think it's really funny how both of them almost immediately become superheroes the first chance they got. Like Virgil's bestfriend is like, "You could be a superhero!" and he agrees instantaneously and does it. Duke's kinda just like, "Ugh, I GUESS I'll join this group of vigilantes if you REALLY want me to!" and "What? You want ME to lead this vigilante group? Aw shucks well SOMEONES gotta do it!" and "Not like being a vigilante is important to me or anything but I will literally let nothing including Batman's trained sidekicks stop me." then he jumps out of a moving cop car off a bridge.

@starlooove YOU'RE SO RIGHT ABOUT THIS I LOVE IT HAHHA
Everyone go read the full reblog bc its genius, but Duke is ABSOLUTELY a smooth talker. And part of it is just because he's so sure of himself and he's so fucking chill.
Like what @starlooove said, it's just how he thinks. It makes complete and total sense in Duke's mind and his conviction alone on the could convince someone. Duke's the typa guy who could make someone believe apples are blue just by talking enough. The kinda guy who has people nodding and saying "maybe he DOES have a point!" and then his point is that him getting stabbed is actually a good thing. (ik Duke has the CRAZIEST fan theories that somehow make sense at the end of the explanation)
But duke is also so casual about everything. Remember when he got shot and was "I GOT SHOT? Wait...this is cool asf" ?? cause I CERTAINLY do! Like Duke really is a true 6'5 nonchalant dreadhead. He approaches everything with this chillness and confidence no wonder people think he knows what he's doing.
Virgil, ofc, has been around long enough to know whats up. He gets to know Duke and is like, "Good job in convincing everyone you're not totally crazy-not me though, stay safe y'all!" But Virgil's chill with that, like Virgil DOES have good plans, but he also likes to zap shit.
In conclusion, the Duke and Virgil duo is stronger than ever, another win for black people across the globe

I think more people need to play around with Damian's speech. Don't get me wrong, I love the antiquated Victorian child style of speech, but also he's a teenager that swears plenty in the comics. We really need more scenes like:
Damian: Father, I regret to inform you that I have been assigned in-school suspension for the next three days.
Bruce: What, why?!
Damian: My classmate Kevin was disparaging a female classmate for turning him down, so I called him 'a rizz-less, basic-ass neckbeard bitch' and said I was going to fuck his mom and give her a son she'd actually love.
Bruce: *is completely speechless*
Damian: That is all I needed to tell you. If you will excuse me, I have homework to complete before dinner and patrol.
