Richie: Isn't it weird that people kill mosquitoes just because they're annoying?
Paul: Damn, if people did that to each other, Ted would've killed me years ago.

❛ The most important thing here is we need to stay together. ❜ @fcdcdmcmories
Tumblr media
it was beginning to get to easy to be this close to him again. not that she could even afford to think like that right now. richie was her final surprise to bailey and she needed him. if this was ever going to work, if they were very going to be free of bailey then she needed him on her side. “i was always with you… until i was given no choice but not to be.” moving forward she took his hand in both of her own, clutching her hands around his. “if we screw this up richie? we’re both dead. he’ll get to us both. i am with you.” squeezing his hand. “i need to know that you’re with me?”@fcdcdmcmories

what is ur opinion on the mtf trans richie headcanon? its kind of gay erasing isnt it?
personally, i love a trans Richie headcanon. usually i like fics with gay ftm richie or sapphic mtf richie. i dont read a lot of fic where Richie is a straight trans woman exclusively interested in men if that’s what you mean by gay erasing (bi Richie is my beloved but that’s a different conversation), partly because I’ve never seen a fic like that (im sure they’re out there though) and partly because it would feel too ooc for me if Richie of any gender identity wasn’t also queer in his sexuality. to actually answer your question, it doesn’t bother me that other people make that content if they’re just sharing their hcs respectfully like the rest of us, and hcs/fanfiction are more reflections of the creators than the characters anyway so i assume they have a personal attachment to that hc the same way im personally attached to mine.
tldr unless someone swerves into my lane im not gonna assume there’s any ill intent in making mtf Richie content, they can do their thing i just won’t read it if i don’t want to

really luv pondering the duality of my oc ships bc both amber and richie pulled the cute but weird girl w little to no real connections outside of them who had literally never been w anybody else.
n yet amber wound up w the most obsessive bitch to walk woodsboro’s 2 streets and 1 cornfield who would need the jaws of life just to be kept away from her bc she will NOT leave her tf alone BUUUUT she is down bad enough to be willing to kill for her. even after getting broken up w and stabbed in the shoulder.
meanwhile richard is out here fighting for his LIFE just tryna get his bitch back bc it turns out his detached from others to a clinical level shawty (who didn’t even date him out of any romantic interest. she saw him as like a brother she just didn’t know how to turn him down w/o being and/or feeling mean abt it 💀) surprise surprise could also just detach herself from him w relative ease 😭 and he only cheated ONE TIME!!! (that she knows of 😭)

every time i rewatch the bear i think about how sydney (often) actively resists opening up emotionally to/getting closer to carmy - more under the cut
moments that immediately come to mind:
when carm asks syd about her dad in s2 e2: she interrupts him and brings the convo back to food.
when carmy asks syd about her new place and how her dad is feeling about the move in s3: i don't remember the actual episode but she interrupts him again to talk about work. what was the reason!!!
when carmy initially asks about syd's mom in s2: she has shown that talking about her mom is difficult (see: her convo with marcus at her place when she made him a beautiful meal), so this could be ambiguous but i think still worth mentioning.
WHEN CARMY TELLS HER SHE LOOKS NICE IN S3: she immediately takes off her bow???? i havent been able to stop thinking about this beat because why does she do that. does she not want to be perceived by him that way? does she feel guilty because she just got back from meeting with another chef for another position (thereby potentially dissolving her and carmy's partnership)? WHY WHY WHY (also she's so real for this because i think it's at least partially meant to signal that she's uncomfortable with his attention if he's not going to accompany it with meaningful communication). yes she favors scarves in the kitchen and she was getting ready for work but i think there's something else going on and have been rotating this scene in my head like it's a rotisserie chicken.
the fact that she half-lied about why she came to work at the bear in the first place, and, relatedly, that he made the best meal she ever had: maybe carm caught onto this one but she doesn't ever openly tell him that she's a fan of his work (and that he made the best meal she ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) i say half-lied because she almost immediately tells him that she knows who he is. so.
i've been thinking a lot about syd's feelings for carmy and how she likely fears emotional intimacy with him. it's a stark contrast to how easily she opens up to marcus or asks richie questions about his daughter or even mentors/becomes friends with tina.
carmy is deeply interested in syd as a person and SHOWS it - in fact the few times in s3 that he's civil to her is when they are not working in the stresses of the kitchen and he's asking her about her life.
i can't think of a time where syd asks CARMY about his family (remember - she asks richie about michael), and when he opens up (without prompting from her!!!) about michael being an addict to her she lightens the mood with a joke, and when he opens up about how donna was a nightmare and he's trying to reclaim cannolis, all she says is "whoa." (btw i actually love sydney because she's so emotionally stunted like that's my girl <3)
she will open up about sheridan road, and her fear of failure (so inherent to who she is and her motivations in the show!), but not so much about HERself and her personal life. it's fascinating.
an exception to this is when syd tells carmy to call richie and apologize - even then it's not syd "asking" per se, but it is her taking a step and knowing what's best for carmy (and the kitchen) in that moment.
i think this is meant to indicate how carmy is different from everyone else in syd's life - almost like he doesn't "fit" into any of the other boxes she has for people.
now, i personally read this as romantic. there's something BIG blocking sydney from accepting that, though, and i think it's that carmy is so tied to her passion, her profession, her LIFE'S WORK, and she will not, cannot, fuck that up. we all talk about claire being an obstacle to a potential romantic connection between the two - and she is - but i truly think sydney's unwillingness to confront her interest in carmy is a bigger, more substantial hurdle (though not at all impossible to overcome!)

i really love how the bear isn't afraid to do huge character shifts based on single moments of time. like tina coming to respect syd over the course of essentially one day & that sparking a belief in what she herself could be and what the beef could be. and most notably richie during forks (and specifically after one convo: "it's about respect"). i've really noticed anecdotally that people often change in sudden moments like that, eureka points that allow them to let go of old narratives they hold about themselves. and i think it's the same shift that happens for both tina & richie ("oh shit. i am good. i can be good. i do not have to cling for dear life to a version of myself in which i am 'bad' and do everything to justify that self's existence because of fear).
g-d and it makes carmy's stuckness and lack of growth all the more painful. trauma forreal does that. he wants so badly to change but can't. we know he's trying. like the effort is notable. but he really can't let go of a traumatically held belief that perfection/goodness = pain & abuse (even if intellectually he understands that's not the case. that shit is too in his body and he can't let go!).

❝ i don’t give a shit! you threw me under the bus! ❞
Tumblr media
sam wasn't sure why she was still having to deal with his shit after what he had pulled on her. sure, trying to kill her and tara was reason to never speak to him again but before that. the fact that he had used her? pretended to love her? he was lucky they weren't having a repeat of what she did to him that night. "you have some nerve saying that to me? richie, you fucking used me and i let that happen. i let you." she scoffed but it was more at herself for ever being that stupid to think he cared. even for a second. "what did you think was going to happen?" @fcdcdmcmories

VIOLET tried to give richie opportunities to prove she wasn't a narc loser, really she did. but it seemed like they were too busy managing violet's fun ideas! so when violet had extended an olive brach in the form of a position as spotter, she should've known it wasn't going to play out the way she wanted.
"c'mon, richie, grass is basically nature's padding!" violet said, her voice borderline a whine. "first you tell me i can't do a front flip over my drum set during gigs and now i can't even do recreational flips?" it was also kinda fun as hell to antagonize richie, violet had found. unstoppable force vs. immovable object etc. except violet's unstoppable force was just pure obnoxious behaviour.
Tumblr media
Richie watched the scene unfolding from their perch on the front porch, perfectly rolled cigarette dangling from their lips. Her resolution of the night was firmly to not get involved. Richie was serious about the music, about the band's potential, which was the whole reason for even taking this gig in the first place. If Richie wanted to babysit adults, she would've become an executive assistant for some bigwig asshole. Instead, she was leaning against the railing on Major's majorly bare porch, debating the merits of intervening with Violet's antics versus letting her go for the gold.
On the one hand, Violet was the quickest to give Richie shit for trying to 'dull her sparkle' or whatever. On the other hand, what the fuck was Richie going to do if their drummer busted her hands?
So, begrudgingly, Richie put out their cigarette and pushed themself off the porch, taking long strides towards Violet. She put her hands up, showing she meant no harm, "Alright, Carly Patterson, give it a rest." Richie sighed, "You do know gymnasts use, like, padded floors for a reason? Ground's a hell of a lot less forgiving."

The restaurant could be good.
Why did Syd call herself an accomplice in 3x05 Children?
Tumblr media
I was re-reading @yannaryartside's fantastic meta about this (and you should too) and it got me thinking. In their meta, OP asks:
Is Syd (or her leaving) supposed to be a wake-up call to Carmy? That he fucked up something that brought him genuine joy and connection because Syd knew the real him, while Claire liked Logan and Carmy's brokenness? The way Claire would enable him in his bad tendencies? How is he gonna realize all that?
Honestly, I don't know what these writers have planned for how Carmy comes to the realisation that season 3 Carmy is not it lol. But I have one suspicion about how it might go, and it has less to do with Carmy and more to do with Syd.
We have to go back to season 1 where it all started. Where Sydney met Carmy and articulated within the first three episodes of the show, her hopes for her future and the future of The Beef.
Recall 1x02 Hands and the convo between her and Richie in Richie's car:
Sydney: You know the restaurant could be good. Like I know you know that. Like it doesn't have to be a place where the food is shitty, and where everybody acts shitty and feels shitty. Like it could be a good legit spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cut to season 3, after Syd and Carmy have overhauled the restaurant and everyone is...well...acting shitty, feeling shitty and the food is looking like a damn mess:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also recall the alley chat in 1x03 Brigade:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sydney: You know, I think this place could be so different from all the other places we've been at. But in order for that to be true, we need to run things different.
Then cut to season 3 where we have EC Carmy decidedly not running things different at The Bear. Instead, he repeats toxic communication and management styles from his past:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recall 1x05 Sheridan and Sydney's vulnerability with Carmy about why she started her catering business, Sheridan Road, after leaving the restaurant scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sydney: Like it was the first time I didn't have a complete and utter psychopath behind me screaming, and pushing and yelling, and I thought I wanted that, you know?
Cut to season 3 and, well, you know the drill: behold our fav Executive Jeff acting like an utter psychopath and partaking in some screaming, pushing and yelling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what happened in season 3? Why have things gone in almost the exact opposite direction of what Sydney hoped for in season 1?
To my mind, the answer to that question lies in season 2 and what both Syd and Carmy were doing during that season. Yes, Syd spent most of season 2 setting up the restaurant alone while Carmy played hooky with Claire. But what was more striking to me was the contrast in effort that both of them put into actually doing things different at the restaurant (as per their pledge to each other during the alley chat of 1x03 Brigade).
Breaking cycles
I agree with @yannaryartside: Carmy playing hooky with Claire in season 2 was him numbing himself (i.e. Claire is the drug that he was addicted to for this purpose). I also reckon he was using Claire as another way to keep Mikey in his life - a reverse-engineered haunt - particularly while the most obvious physical manifestation of Mikey in the present day (The Beef itself) was being transformed into something else entirely. That kind of change - that kind of loss - couldn't have been easy for Carmy, particularly as The Bear was something he had wanted to open with this brother in the first place. I get why Carmy would "self-medicate" with Claire to try and numb some of the pain he may have felt, I really do.
But while Carmy was spending so much of his time either avoiding or dulling his pain, it meant he had little time or energy for working through these things. We know that he has been making attempts at this particularly in relation to his familial trauma and grief (as evidenced by his attendance at Al-Anon meetings). But throughout seasons 1-3 we see almost no work on Carmy's part to address the abuse and trauma that he's experienced in professional kitchens. We do not see him trying to prepare himself for the task of leading an entire restaurant. The first and only time we see Carmy start this process is in the last episode of season 3, when he bravely confronts Chef David Fields at the funeral dinner for Ever.
Now admittedly, Sydney does not have the history of familial abuse that Carmy does. But as discussed above, she does share a history of professional abuse in the restaurant industry with him. Its why the two of them make that promise to each other to do things different in 1x03 Brigrade.
To this end, Sydney spends almost all of season 2 working to enhance her leadership skills to make herself better for the staff she'll be leading as CDC of The Bear. Recall her book, Leading with the Heart by Mike Krzyzewski (Chicago-born, Polish-American and hugely successful former basketball coach of the Duke University Blue Devils and the American national basketball team), gifted to her by her father, Emmanuel:
Tumblr media
In the beginning of 2x07 Forks, we follow Sydney as she surveys The Bear during renovations and while she works on a menu idea. This opening sequence features the following narration from an interview with Krzyzewski (which reiterates the show's ongoing message that none of us are alone, particularly when we take the time to listen to one another):
The other thing is that you're not gonna get there alone. You know, be on a team. You know, surround yourself with good people and learn how to listen.
You're not gonna learn with you just talking.
And when you do talk, converse. Don't make excuses. Figure out the solution. And you don't have to figure it out yourself.
I always wanted to be part of a team and obviously I wanted to lead that team. You know, [...] what an interesting life it is to be a leader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The advice Coach K gives in the above monologue is also mirrored in Marcus' eulogy for his mother where he spoke about the importance of listening. It's also gold advice for how to be consistent in relationship to others. I've spoken here about the themes of chaos and consistency on this show and how one of Carmy's battles is understanding that,
[C]onsistency in terms of a product (e.g. a clean kitchen every night or immaculately plated dishes each service) and consistency in terms of relationships are two different things. You can strive for consistent products but destroy all your relationships in the pursuit of them. Conversely, if you strive for consistency in your relationships, you may not always make consistent products (and quite frankly, that's OK - is a perfectly plated agnolotti dish worth Carmy's relationship with Tina? Is driving Syd to a panic attack worth Carmy's pursuit of a star? I think not on both counts).
Sydney took the time throughout season 2 to learn how to be consistent and effective as a leader. She knew - and knows - that simply being an excellent chef is not going to cut it when it comes to running a restaurant and leading a team. This took time and effort on her part but she was committed to making The Bear different to all the other places she'd been at, so she did it. I should also note that Syd did this internal work while menu-planning and trying to push herself culinarily. She was doing so much lifting. Jealousy of Claire aside, I am surprised Syd didn't rip Carmy a new one when he talked about rejigging the menu while at his girl-who's-a-friend's house lmao.
Cut to season 3 though, and Syd is running The Bear with Carmy who has spent the entire season not having put in the work to change the chemistry in their restaurant. Of course Syd tries to counter this as best she can. She runs interference with the team and gently tries to steer the ship. But as she says in 3x09 Apologies, things have been off at The Bear.
So when Syd tells us in 3x05 Children that she's an accomplice, I can't help but feel that in her heart, Sydney believes she's an accomplice in the betrayal of their vision - Sydney and Carmy's shared vision for The Bear - from season 1. The vision she worked so hard during season 2 to bring to fruition.
Tumblr media
By season 3, they've betrayed it and each other: family style is no where to be found and The Bear looks and feels like all the other places Syd and Carmy have been at. While exhausting for Carmy ("I'm so fucking sick of this"), this would have been devastating for Syd, given all she's done to try and avoid this outcome. You can understand why she'd consider an offer like Shapiro's (though we know she's not going to take it).
Given the events of 3x10, where Carmy confronts Chef David and has that heart-to-heart with Chef Terry, its clear his perspective on Michelin mode is starting to shift. I think the threat of losing Sydney will scare the shit out of him too. But what I think will prompt Carmy to actually change his behaviour in season 4 is the realisation that he too is an accomplice and has betrayed not just himself but Sydney and their team as well. Season 4 will necessarily need to be told, at least in part, from Syd's perspective so that the impact of this on Syd is made clear to the audience (Storer and Calo, are you listening? Its me, a desperate fan). And once Carmy recognises his role in continuing the traumatic professional legacy championed by Chef Fields, he can get into working through and breaking that cycle. I'll be seated and ready for it.

what i am looking forward to in the bear season 4:
Learning much more about Sydney and seeing her be joyful!
Marcus! I just want him to be happy.
I really want to know what that moment with Tina and her husband was in one of the teasers.
Syd and Emmanuel. They're so sweet, like I can't 😭
Tiff's wedding. There's definitely going to be some more intense shit going down anyway, but that's what's been mentioned since season 2.
Syd and Donna talking... Uh... Lots of potential for a really interesting convo.
Carmy and Richie reconciling. Long overdue.
Carmy and Donna talking. (I don't necessarily care for Donna to be redeemed, but I'm intrigued with how their discussion will go; Carmy isn't Nat).
Carmy and Syd. Um...? Obviously want to see how their dynamic will turn out. (As long as Sydney's arc is done well and she's happy and Carmy gets the help he needs and is happier, I'm good. Anything else is dead to me at this point lol).
The meals that are going to pop up! I do wonder if there's going to be a meal like Sydney's omelette, the beef sandwiches, Marcus's chocolate cake etc etc. There wasn't a point in S3 where food was really enjoyed either (or there was just a general lack of scenes like that?)
may add to this!

Nerd Headcanons because this post was only supposed to be about one but I went a little wild-
I headcannon Richie as Aroace(Asexual, Demi-romantic), so I like to imagine Grace befriending him due to his lack of interest, and then becoming borderline obsessed with him due to how completely abstinent he is, meanwhile he's just like, "Why are you even here? Go away"
I also headcannon that Ruth is the only reason Richie and Pete were even friends. The way I picture it is that Ruth and Pete had to do a math assignment together in middle school, and they weren't really working together, more like working around each other, and all the sudden Pete makes a dumb Star Wars reference and Ruth flips out. Like, she's so excited that she completely lights up and starts rambling to him about her headcannons and ships, and Pete just sits there kinda stunned until she brings up a headcannon that he actually thinks is interesting, So all the sudden the two are just having a conversation about the things that make the headcannon so good, and they get so invested in the conversation that they don't finish the assignment before the end of class, so Ruth invites Pete to sit with her a lunch the next day. So he goes to sit with her, and there's this blue haired weeb(idc if its not canon, Richie had a blue hair phase) who's arguing with her, when the weeb notices Pete and shoots him the nastiest, bitchiest look on the planet, and Pete's just like "i^i". And Ruth introduces Pete as her math buddy and starts talking about their Star Wars convo, and Richie goes on a rant about how Star Wars is stupid and Pete starts arguing his points, and is turns into an actual fight. And then later Ruth is talking to Pete later in class and Pete's like "Hey, Your friend sucks-" and Ruth is like "Yeah, he's such a bitch. Don't worry, I put pickle juice in his monster this morning" and Pete's just like "Wtf bro, what is your friendship-"
And the reason that Richie and Ruth are friends is because in elementary school, Ruth used to eat glue and Richie used to doodle girls in pretty dresses so he got picked on. So Ruth just kind of adopted him as her friend, and they just naturally developed a sibling like bond over time.
I also headcannon that Ruth's parents were also nerds, and they like nerdy shit things and are super supportive(Ruth and Esther would totally get along. They're Cousins or siblings, take your pick), But Richie has a weird dynamic with his family, where he's not really understood by them so he gets more territorial over his interests, and Ruth understands that so she lets him ramble about whatever he wants, even if he's kind of being a dick about it. I also Headcannon that Richie was actually on the swim team for a while(I grabbed that headcannona from someone else), and was way more chill being able to connect with others, but Max saw Kyle talking to Richie after swim practice before a football game, and he started spreading rumors that Richie was gay, and eventually he dropped out due to harassment.
Pete and Riche would've gotten along way better while Richie was on the swim team, and they probably considered themselves actual friends, but as Richie lost his feeling of belonging on the Swim team, their relationship would've deteriorated again, but Pete would've realized that he's just abd angst fucking bitch and hated him less for it.
Ruth totally looked into swimming the minute Richie said he was into it, and she totally helped him practice outside of school. She was the one cheering the loudest for him at meets, and she'd yell at him like a coach when they practiced together.
Ruth probably has people telling her to shut up all the time, so she's a fiesty little shit when it comes to clapbacks. She can think of them fast and on point, and likes to make a game out of it. Unfortunately, you cant do that on stage, so she feels helpless to defend herself and thats why she has such bad stage fright. She's probably a really, really good actor, too. I imagine her being able to break down sobbing like her baby was hit by a car, only to smile and bow Meer seconds later. She's probably fucking wonderful.
