Not to game art graduate my way in here but I think I have an explanation. If the sunrises aren’t deliberately green, they might be incidentally green based on the art assets and how the graphics engine displays them, much like a semi-famous problem painters run into with sunrises.
It makes sense if you think of it that way; orange or yellow assets/lighting/textures, when overlaid with blue ones, mix to green after the computer does the math. To achieve the gradients we see in a sunrise, like in the image below, totally different methods often have to be used like applying a custom color ramp or levels adjustments, or baking a skybox animation with the specific colors you want and not letting the computer interpolate between them at its own whims.
[Caption; sunrise in Seattle, with the space needle and city skyline visible. The sky is a rich peach at the bottom, moving to a golden orange, then a pale beige, and finally sky blue.]
It’s a challenge a lot of traditional painters encounter, too; painting sunrises without creating “green” requires not letting any of the blue or orange paints mix. But mixing wet paint is often the only way to create soft gradients. So you see a lot of green sunrises there. It might be that the same thing is happening in both mediums, since colors have the same relationships whether it’s additive or subtractive mixing.
[Caption; four classical paintings of sunrises that each feature green skies, or gradients that include them, with colors visibly different than the sunrise photograph. Individual paintings and artists listed at end of post.]
Why the sky actually looks like those colors specifically in real life is probably a really interesting thing I learned from a James Gurney book at one point, and then forgot, but I do notice the gradients look a lot more like a light kelvin scale; going from warm, to neutral, to cool.
Without knowing if that has anything to do with it, I know painters have managed to make it work by painting the transitions from orange to neutral, and blue to neutral, separately. I’ve been out of the game enough that I wonder exactly what techniques digital artists are doing to avoid the problem in skyboxes. I’d be curious to know what the Rockstar devs were doing for RDD2, for example, since those sunrises look perfect.
[Caption; a sunrise from the game Red Dead Redemption. The colors more closely match the first photograph from Seattle.]
Anyway, those are my best guesses. Hoping someone can confirm, expand upon, or debunk any elements of this post as required.
[Paintings from earlier in clockwise order;
Evening, Owens Lake, California by Albert Bierstadt
A Mountainous Landscape with a Waterfall, Sunrise by Jens Juel
Sunrise, Atlantic City by William Trost Richards
Sunrise by Albert Bierstadt]
Why does nintendo games portray early sunrise as green?
I have never in my life seen a sunrise in these colors. I used to witness them a lot during college by doing all-nighters and they always had the same colors as a sunset. But in ACNH as well as both BOTW and TOTK the early sunrise has this green tint to it? Is this a thing?

Some questions: 1) Have we seen 65!verse Elektra, and if no, how would you want her to be?; 2) Have you read 'What if... Iron Man sold out?' (a.k.a. What if...? vol 2 #64)? Would like to know what you think of its DD; 3) If Matt ever went back to his LA outfit (or an AU version of him appeared) should he be maskless, combining it with his classick headcovering, or some new kind of mask?
Hi!
1) To my memory, we still have not seen Earth-65 Elektra yet. Back when Spider-Gwen and her universe were first introduced and none of us knew much about them yet, I was obsessed with the idea that since this version of Matt was a Hand assassin, Elektra would be a superhero. Maybe her father survived, maybe he still died but she had enough of a support system to work through it. Maybe she roomed with her pre-law best friend Becky Blake in college, and after graduation used her degrees and martial arts skills to protect the people of New York. Maybe she would even get to have Matt bleed to death in her arms! I was really pumped about the whole idea, and still am. While Earth-65 has proven itself to not just be based around simple role-swaps, I love the way Matt and Elektra’s life trajectories parallel each other, and it would be fun to see that reflected in this new context. I would enjoy seeing Elektra as a superhero-- not just grudgingly filling a role, as she currently is in the main universe, but on her own terms, with her own motivations, as a result of slightly altered events in her life.
In terms of the existing story, on one of my Spider-Gwen rereads, I picked up on a detail which may or may not be relevant:
[ID: A panel showing Matt’s head from the back. In front of him, out a window, is a view of the lit up windows of high rise office buildings.]
Matt: “A family sitcom of endless torture and trial...where siblings fight to the death for a dog’s scraps...and a warrior’s worth was based on the ease with which he could kill his first lover.”
Spider-Gwen vol. 2 #28 by Jason Latour, Robbi Rodriguez, and Rico Renzi
For anyone who hasn’t read the issue/series, this is Earth-65 Matt describing his experience being raised/trained by the Hand. We don’t know for sure that he’s using examples from his own life here, and we don’t know if Elektra was his first lover in this universe as she was in 616... but this does suggest that there’s a chance he and Elektra were forced into some kind of duel to the death, and that he killed her. It’s a vague, tiny enough comment that even if Jason Latour intended it to be interpreted that way, it might not have been noticed by Seanan McGuire and other future Spider-Gwen writers. Or even if it was, bringing people back to life is the Hand’s main thing, so it doesn’t mean we could never see Elektra. Regardless, I think it’s an intriguing detail.
2) I had not read this, thank you for pointing me toward it! Every time I think I’ve read all of Matt’s appearances, I find another cameo somewhere, and I really enjoyed this issue. It’s a compelling concept for a What If? and I loved its emotionally rich treatment of Tony and Rhodey’s relationship. And seeing Matt and Elektra together was fun.
[ID: A circular panel with a jagged orange border, showing Matt and Elektra standing arm-in-arm on a moonlit beach. Matt is wearing a brown jacket and black pants, and Elektra is wearing a red shirt over a short black dress.]
Caption: “The Greek island of Kos, where Matthew Murdock-- once Daredevil-- lives with his wife, Elektra Natchios.”
What If? vol. 2 #64 by Simon Furman, Geoff Senior, Sarra Mossoff, and Richard Starkings
It isn’t the only hypothetical world to show them retired from adventuring and living together in Greece, and I tend to be skeptical of the idea that Matt would ever stop superheroing for good, because that’s just not how I interpret his character, but it’s great to see versions of continuity in which he and Elektra are together and happy. (I’m more torn on whether Elektra would ever quit being an assassin-- I think a part of her wants to, but I’m also not sure she could.) It’s also noteworthy that this came out in the 90s, at a time when Elektra was trying to stop being an assassin-- which is reflected in her being presented as a superhero in this story. There are two little details I want to single out:
[ID: A panel showing Elektra, in-costume, kicking Fabian Cortez in the jaw.]
Elektra: “Cortez, your mutant ability allows you to enhance your foe’s parahuman power to such an extent it can no longer be controlled, is that correct? Quite useless, I should think, against one whose combat skills stem from years of rigorous training!”
My knowledge of the mutant side of the Marvel Universe is a little sparse, and I wasn’t familiar with Cortez. It’s a good thing Elektra took care of him here, because with that power-set, he would have destroyed Matt. Also, the Marvel Wiki tells me he plays the banjo. Can we get him in a Daredevil comic, please?
And secondly, I love this panel:
[ID: A panel with a green background, showing Daredevil and Elektra fighting Magneto. Elektra is punching up to hit Magneto in the head, and Daredevil is driving an elbow down into his head from the other side.]
Caption: “They are no match for Magneto, frail flesh and blood... and yet they will not yield.”
3) I adore Matt’s public identity suit and I don’t think I would change anything (in fact, years ago my co-blogger and I wrote a post about how much we liked it). I love how it looks, the way it combines the visuals of both sides of Matt’s life, and I love the significance of it being maskless. That said, it was a costume for a very specific period in Matt’s life: an optimistic new start with a public identity. If he were to ever put it back on (and I hope he does!), whether or not it included a mask would have to depend on both his identity status and his state of mind at the time. I think it would look neat with the regular red Daredevil mask, which would give it a strikingly different, more mysterious feel.
Thanks for the great questions!

____________________________________
What follows that night is a feverish dream. The following months flow in a haze as days blend into each other. New York, my apartment...all is familiar yet ever distant. As if I'm back home and somewhere far away simultaneously. I'm here and I'm not here.
Moving on is tougher than I could have possibly imagined. Sabine and Richard take care of me with tender compassion, doubling their usual efforts: it's heartwarming, truly. It leaves me wondering what I have ever done right in my life to deserve such adoration and, most importantly, affection because it's genuine concerned affection what I see in their eyes when our eyes meet. Sabine immediately added a newfound touch of sweetness to her proverbial efficiency and joins me at the breakfast table more often these days: sometimes it happens that I am not in the mood for talking and we sit together in complete silence. At first it made me nervous but my little Napoleon doesn't seem to mind: she would offer me a smile and gesture to the coffee pot or the plate filled with slices of my favourite bread and my nervousness melts away replaced by a sense of comfort. Richard visits me more than usual and invites me to join him for a walk at Central Park: "you always say how much you love that place, let's go together...it will do you good" he suggests, smiling sheepishly and offering me his arm. Just like Sabine, he doesn't mind that at times I fall quiet and melancholy takes over me. He would gently stroke my hand resting on his arm and keep walking at my side. One day, as I took a seat on a bench, he picked a flower, a gorgeous little daisy, and pinned it to my hat. He smiled at me and gave my hand an encouraging squeeze before taking a seat beside me. He's surprisingly sweet, sweeter than I deserve, and more mature than I thought when we first met. Richard never once mentioned nor complained about James. He would have every reason and right to question me about him after the secret letters my nephew sent him, asking for money. He never did: the day after our arrival, he even asked his friend John to make sure Mr. Eisler and his valet were safe in their New York apartment. Richard is probably waiting for the moment I'm ready to have that conversation. How could I never be ready for it? Yet, I must, I must confront my nephew: what he did is too hurtful and serious not to come with harsh consequences. Before I send a note to James, I share with Richard my decision: as much as I have little desire to see him now, he's still family and I have at least a moral obligation to him, the old oath I made to Theresa, so I will grant him a generous monthly income. I will set a few conditions, which include no more letters or inappropriate requested to Richard and no more interferences with the marriage under the treat of a legal action from my lawyers. I explain my fiancée the hideous scheme my nephew planned, omitting some details, and I assure him that I was in the dark about the letters: I knew nothing about them and I'm deeply ashamed and sorry he went this far. Richard listens to me carefully and gives me a painful smile as he take my hand into his. "I knew, Zetta. I always knew and I didn't suspect you when I received them, not even for a split second" he sighs. "I trust you, my darling". He just worried about me and he is still concerned because as much as it pains him to say that, my nephew seems dangerous and he has no sympathy for him. I assure him we won't see him anytime soon: after what he did, the things between James and I will never be the same. I don't even know if I will ever be able to forgive him. I repeat the same words to Jaime a few days later and having such a conversation with him is one of the toughest thing in my whole life. I'm angry and disappointed as I speak, wounded in the deep yet tortured by the familiar affection refusing to die inside me. When he close the door behind him, full knowing I don't know when we will see each other again, my heart breaks and I fall sobbing on my knees. My little prince is gone. There is a big fuss in town about the Titanic hearings: American and British authorities are investigating the disaster and the White Star Line company is covered with shame. The hearings are held in New York at Waldorf-Astoria Hotel so I try to keep updated. I spoke to a committing magistrate too: he asked questions about that night to see if I could provide valuable information for the official investigation. It turned out I had none or at least very little to offer him, aside from reporting the questionable decision of lowering half-empty lifeboats and the stubborn refusal to go against it of many officers, like the one I yelled at on the deck. I sign my deposition, which adds up to many others he gathered since the inquiry started. I don't need to testimony at court, he said, he has tons of other witnesses reporting the same issue and he will just add my deposition to the documents to be sent to the judge. "You can go, thank you for your time, Miss Serda" he smiles, vigorously shaking my hand. He praises my heroism but I don't know what he's talking about. Apparently, other witnesses claimed that they owe me their life or saw me protesting on the deck. I'm no hero, I think as my mind runs to the young steward who stayed behind, down in the belly of the sinking ship to keep the light on and give us all a chance to survive. I think his name was Charlie. A few weeks after the beginning of the hearings, about the end of May, I receive a letter from Lucille. She hadn't hear from me since our arrival and she's worried about me, she writes. She had sent me letters but I answered none. She profusely apologises for not waiting for me as she promised but "they had no choice, the chaos was mounting": she hopes this won't be the end of our friendship. Hoping so, she renews her invitation: Richard and I will be her most welcome guests if we fancy joining her and Cosmo for dinner at their apartment whenever it suits us. I don't know how to feel about this. Under different circumstances, it would have filled with joy, maybe relief after all we've been through, now...now things are more complicated than that. Unlike me, Lucille and Cosmo were asked to appear at court during the hearings to verify certain details. They had been all over the press ever since the news spread and I wonder if I'm being a bad friend "abandoning" her in a time like this. The press predictably feasted and is still feasting over the disaster: tragic stories, eye catching headlines, shocking revelations, heartwarming and heartbreaking pictures from the pier: ça vien sans dire, the touching embrace between me and Richard - "reunited lovers" as the caption said - made it to the front page. As weeks went by, my brief appearance was replaced by the new scandal involving nothing less than the Duff-Gordons, not only my personal friends but also a couple of incredibly famous socialites. When I first read it, my heart sank while Richard declared himself disgusted by what journalists write these days. Rumor has it that Lucille, sitting with her husband and secretary on Lifeboat No. 1, commented to her Laura something like, "There is your beautiful nightdress gone" in the aftermath of the sinking. When the Titanic disappeared to the bottom of the sea and poor souls were freezing to death in the ocean, begging us on the lifeboats to come back and save them. I still hear their screams in my nightmares. There's more though: reportedly Cosmo had bribed the lifeboat's crew not to return to save swimmers out of fear the vessel would capsize; he handed checks to them on board of the Carpathia. But Lifeboat No. 1 was designed to carry 40 passengers. Only 12 people were on board when it was lowered unlike the one I was on, filled beyond its capacity. How could an half-empty boat capsize? They could have saved so many lives that night! The thought made my stomach turn to the point that I feel almost nothing when I see the pictures of them during the inquiry: Cosmo looking grim and tensed in his seat and Lucile dressed in black, a mourning dress with a veiled hats, entering the court. I know better than to trust rumours blindly...but I know them. I've known her for ages and, as much as it hurts to say, I can't completely rule out the possibility that for once the press was right. Maybe I'm wrong but I can't vouch for them this time. And doubt is an uncomfortable thing... The final report by the inquiry is more generous than me and clear their names, even if - I'm sure - the general public will be less forgiving. Anyway, Richard is quite fond of the couple, we will surely go visit them... I do not pretend to be fine after what happened on my birthday's night -the sinking, James' betrayal, but I can conceal. I know how to conceal, if need be, in public, in front of people who cannot understand. I'm an actress, a great actress after all. But I feel numb, a ghost of my usual self. During the day I try to keep myself busy. My renaissance requires hard work and commitment as well as a good plan. Sabine and Richard are excellent helpers: I need new projects to work on to make my comeback and an efficient daily schedule to prevent me from drowning in my sorrow. I may conceal it but I dread the time when I have nowhere to run and my mind races back to that memory that fills me with excruciating sadness and guilt. My sweet revolutionary. At night I drink sherry and write letters to Adele. They're passionate, melancholic, tearful. I throw them away in the morning: my words flow on the paper but they ring hollow in the daylight. I don't know what I am supposed to write her. What should I tell her? What could possibly excuse my silence as times go by? I wish I could speak freely what's inside my mind but it's unbelievably difficult. More than she deserves, probably. For some time I tried to convince myself that our little romance on the Titanic was mere attraction, a secret affair favoured by the circumstances: two women growing close, Adele's protectiveness, my heart susceptible to women's beauty and charm just like hers. We found each other and it happened. That's all. But her memory lingers, it never fades away. Never. She always finds a way back to me. At night or during the day, by accident. She's everywhere even if this isn't a place she belongs to. She's in the announcement of a referendum for women's suffrage in Michigan: I read the news and think how excited she must be about it. Maybe she knows it already but I feel a silly urgency to send her the page of the newspaper: your dream may come true after all, see, my love? She's in a gorgeous dress I see hanging on a mannequin in a boutique and I know would fit her perfectly. I have to refrain myself not to buy it and send it to her with a sweet note because I don't care if she needs it, I just want her to have it. She needs beautiful things in her life too. She's in a witty joke I hear in a fancy cafe: I laugh and turn towards Sabine to say "Oh Adele would love this humour" but words die in my throat. When I turn, my cheer has turned into a grimace. Adele isn't here. I don't even know her address here. The thought pains me. I could ask Sabine to find it, I could visit her...but I find myself wondering if it would be the better judgement. I'd give up half my fortune or even more to know about her, even just a quick update. Is she fine? Is she still hurting? Did she and her sister settle down safely? Does she have nightmares at night? She looked so defeated and forlorn on the Carpathia, it pains me to remember seeing the light in her eyes flicker. But maybe this way it will be easier for her to move on. To forget me, if that's what we must get to, no matter how much it hurts. Sometimes I drink myself to a stupor to break the spiral of such thoughts and I'm quite ashamed of myself when Sabine finds me like that in the morning. I mutter nonsense excuses I don't owe her - but I feel like do, she's not a maid, she's my friend - as I hold onto her since I can barely stand on my feet at times and I burst into tears whenever she says: "You have nothing to apologise for, Madam" I do, though. I should - no I must apologise to Adele and Hileni too for disappearing and abandoning them on that pier. I must tell Adele how things really are, how I miss her, it's unbearable... So it's no surprise then that when Richard announces me his idea to postpone the grifter story project I've been working on in favour of a new one, "an homage to the Titanic tragedy", my mind comes find her once again. The project is a wise mix of ambitious opportunism - the sinking is still the talk of the town and people will love it - and genuine concerns. He says I'll not only play the main heroine but also pick the subject, he will just help assessing the script but he wants me to be the one calling the shots on the story to tell. I believe he feels it might be somehow therapeutic for me, aside from the alluring detail of having the star Zetta Serda co-writing an announced success. I consider it for a while, but in the end I write down the Carrem sisters story. I'm fully aware that the picture will hardly be able to bring back to life what it truly happened, the grandeur and the terror. I'm experienced enough to know that the audience can take only that much of the tragedy: they wanna cry and say that they felt as if they were there but they would scream and leave the room if I showed them the truth. A giant ship collapsing in front of you, officers shooting to maintain orders, stewards stubbornly denying desperate passengers their only chance to jump on a lifeboat and to survive, the screams of those who floated in the chilly waters and the dreading silence that followed their unmerciful death. They will never take that much. On the contrary, they will likely enjoy the story of two sisters separated and reunited, prevailing over the impending tragedy threatening to kill them both. It's an heartwarming story with an happy ending and the right amount of pathos and hope. It's also the story of my love that I'm writing down on paper and hand to the posterity. When I present it to Richard, he loves it. He himself couldn't have found a better story, he says, barely containing his excitement. I explain quietly that it's a true story, I just changed the names in respect of the real protagonists of this story. I can only hope Adele won't hate me for this when she sees it. Hate me even more than she's probably doing right now, I frown. I can only hope she will understand.

Hello hello hello! A week has passed and I am back from my mini break. I am going to indulge in a little travel report here, so those of you who have no interest in sitting through someone else’s holiday pictures – no offense taken, I totally understand! – please just scroll down to where you see the header for the round-up. All your tumblr Armitage needs will be satisfied down there 😉.
Tbh, it was lovely to leave the confines of my home town and finally venture out a little bit farther afield. In fact, it only occurred to me as we were on the road, that I hadn’t left Dublin at all since mid-January 😱. Ireland is not really that big – it reaches about 500 km (300m) from top to bottom – but the terrain here is characterised by rocks and hills, which makes for small, windy roads, especially as the infrastructure does not need to be as car-friendly as in other, more populated countries in the world. So don’t be surprised if you see the estimated travel time in the map below.
Yes, it takes more than 4 hours to travel 287km (178m) in Ireland. 😁 If you look really closely at the map you will actually notice a black jagged line running through the land. That is the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. Our route this time took us the Northern Irish way, crossing into NI near Belturbet and then exiting again via Pettigo. The border is still “green”, i.e. there is no visible sign that you have actually moved from one jurisdiction to another. (I can usually only tell by the difference in road surface 😂 and the fact that the speed signs are suddenly in miles/h and not in kilometer/h any more. It’ll be interesting to see the Brexit regulation work out the issue of the United Kingdom’s *only* land border while keeping both EU customs rules as well as inner-Irish peace…) This is the shortest way of getting up from Dublin in the centre of the East coast, into the Northwestern corner of Ireland, which is part of the Republic and called County Donegal.
Our journey took us even longer than the estimated 4 hours, but then we also had to switch drivers in order to relieve my mother-in-law (77) and take a lunch break. We eventually arrived in Dunfanaghy in the late afternoon where my father-in-law had specifically booked rooms with a view in the plush Arnold’s Hotel. At first I was a bit taken aback at the layer of dust in our otherwise lovely room but then I realised that it meant the room had not been used in months and we were the first occupants since reopening the day prior, i.e. no lingering viruses there… From our luxurious king-size bed we had views out to the beach. (Click all images to enlarge!)

I have to say I was a bit skeptical as regards the attitude of the holiday makers towards keeping safe from the virus, though. Dunfanaghy was packed to the gills with tourists, particularly from Northern Ireland. (The weekend actually coincided with the traditional, Protestant celebrations of the Battle of the Boyne on the 12th of July every year. This is a significant date in NI, marking the victory of Protestant king William III over Catholic king James II, celebrated with drums, huge bonfires and marches by the Orange Order. It continues to be a controversial tradition within NI, with (some) Catholics offended by the celebration of this victory, while (some) Protestants insist on their right to express their traditions.) As part of the UK, NI has had a different approach to the Covid crisis than the Republic, and tbh I was not really that impressed with the general lack of social distancing displayed last week. (It goes without saying that it was *not only* NI people who were far too close for my comfort; there obviously were also plenty of Irish holiday makers there, too.) Within the hotel, there were hand-sanitisers at all exits and corridors, so it was easy to keep hands clean. In the restaurant, the staff wore PPE masks and the guests were seated well apart as fewer tables than normal were set up. So I felt relatively safe in there. But I hardly saw any face masks worn in the village, people were congregating in big groups outside pubs and shops, and it felt as if there were no covid restrictions at all. All that made me very angry. On our walks, particularly in the very busy Glenveagh National Park, people would not keep distance even though the paths were more than 2 meters wide, and on the parking lot, cars parked directly side-by-side. But then again, at least we were outside, and Glenveagh is an absolutely stunning place.

I have been to Glenveagh a good few times before. It’s a stunning valley with a 19th century hunting lodge castle at the centre. There is a formal garden through which you enter the castle grounds, but what I had not see until now was the amazing kitchen garden. The little gardener’s cottage under the large tree somehow reminded me of Bag End.
The best thing, of course, is the beaches and dunes and the mighty North Atlantic.

I was thinking of Squirrel/Radagast who had commented about wild flowers before I left for the North, and I took a good few photos of flowers.

The weather was – Irish. We had two days that were predominantly dry, with only a little bit of drizzle here and there. Only on our last day the weather really turned against us, which was annoying as we had planned to go walking with my in-laws a bit. But well, a bit of wet doesn’t deter my hardy in-laws. There is no bad weather – only inappropriate clothing. So we trudged off on a two-hour walk in the Ards Forest. I think I was the only who got drenched to the skin. Yep, even after 20 years I still haven’t learnt… or bought the right equipment.
Typical family picnic. In the rain. Sharing 1 bottle of Guinness, 2 apples and 2 sandwiches. No lie.
However, we did also get a bit of sunset in, and so the trip’s best memory is this – a sundowner from Horn Head with the ragged shape of Tory Island in the background.
So, that was my summer holiday 2020. Four nights away with family. It was actually really lovely, especially as my f-i-l is now getting really old. This may have been his last trip up to Donegal. It was lovely to spend time with him and my m-i-l who are still very active and who are interesting to chat to. I was especially delighted that Little Miss Guylty came along, too – not just for myself but also for the grandparents for whom her presence is particularly special. And I had four nights of sound sleep that really recharged my batteries. So much so that I can now jump energetically into this week’s tumblr round-up:
Badtennantwolf has put together a set of icons. I am including the set here for the first four pictures of RA at SDCC in 2015 as we recently had a chat about that occasion (and the famous dragon beanie throw) elsewhere

There we go. Sorry for the whole long holiday crap. I can faithfully promise that that is it for this year *sardonic laugh*.
However, before I go and more importantly, just a quick reminder:
It’ll be August soon and that means… RA birthday auction time!!! Donations of items have been coming in and it is high time for me to start organising and promoting, soon. Watch this space for more info!
Have a lovely weekend,

Zombie Movie: I Am Legend (2007)
“Here’s Karen at the health desk.”
Karen from the health desk. (Picture: A female news anchor, Karen from the health desk.)
Language warning (sorry kids, but this is an MA15+ movie).
I shit you not, that’s one of the opening quotes of the movies. So, friends and enemies, welcome to the longest review I’ve done of a zombie movie yet. It’s 1:35am here in Australia and I’ve just finished rewatching I Am Legend, everything’s fresh in my mind and I’m hyped up on chocolate.
This movie has incredible tension, a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse, and it’s based on the 1954 novel by Richard Matherson, which inspired the modern day vampire and zombie movies. Why you may ask? Because it popularised the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to a disease... now I’m beginning to realise that watching zombie movies during a global pandemic maybe wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had. Any who.
YouTube rewind made me forget how bloody good of an actor Will Smith is, and boy does he deliver in this movie. Robert’s (that his character, btw, though I will probably end up just referring to the character as Will Smith) interactions with Sam the goodest girl in the world (she’s a dog) and the mannequins is incredible.
The goodest girl in the world. (Picture: A dog (I’m sorry - I don’t know dog breeds! I’m 99% sure she’s a German Shepard) being given a bath and head scratches by Will Smith.)
Now: three things to look forward to in this “review” (assuming you read the spoilery section below). One: how realistic is this apocalypse? Two: there’s a dog. Three: zombie vampires. Vampire zombies?
Backgrounds details! (Picture: Will Smith opened the fridge. On the fridge door are photos of his wife and daughter, a calendar dated for December, a drawing with “Marley” written in kids handwriting, post-it notes, a pamphlet with the heading “Quarantine”, and a Time Magazine cover of Robert Neville (Will Smith). The title reads (heading) “Saviour?” (sub-heading) “Soldier, Scientist” (body of text) “In a Battle that Could Save Thousands of Lives, Lt. Col. Robert Neville Takes on the XV Virus.”
Also, there’s banging in my house at the moment and when I say I’m peaking. I’m going to need to listen to some music while I write this.
Read on for a fun time! Spoilers ahoy!
Realism (the really relevant part. Yikes)
Okay, so what’s this fresh take on the apocalypse? Basically, this doctor cures cancer and it all goes to shit from there. I’m not 100% on the logistical jump from “destroying cancer cells” to “humans (and animals) becoming bloodthirsty mutants that burn in the sun” - for instance, this is just my sci-fi high-school biology and physics brain working here, cancer is basically a rogue cell that mutates other cells and destroys them in the process, yeah? So if the doctor, like she said, uses these cancer cells to work for the body and in the process “cures” cancer, wouldn’t the humans just... infect each other and the virus would kill the host if it went south? Given, that did happen in like 90% of cases as Will Smith explains, but where does the sunlight allergy come in? Is cancer afraid of UV? Confused, but I digress.
... Is that my queen, Missy, from Umbrella Academy? (Picture: A woman with blood leaking from her eyes, holding a child and shouting for help.)
The scene where they’re listening to the radio and the guy is like we’re “issuing a military quarantine of New York City” I’m like bitch you wish. Unrealistic. The USA currently (9/10/2020) has the highest cases of COVID-19 in the world (for future historians and poor school children, it’s at 7.68 MILLION cases, no statistic for recovered cases for some weird ass reason, and sadly, 212,000 deaths. For reference, here in Australia we’ve had as of today 27,206 cases, 24,807 recovered and 897 deaths. New Zealand, who went into hard lockdown, had as of today, 1,864 cases, 1,800 recovered, and 25 deaths, with a period where there were 0 new cases for several days.)
Though, with that in mind, everyone going outside and gathering in large crowds? Realistic.
The actual movie part
Praises time! Will Smith has a stockpile of food. Also, him getting Sam (the dog) to eat her vegetables like she’s a little kid? Cutest thing ever.
Stockpilesss. (Picture: Will Smith wearing an apron and preparing a meal in a kitchen chock full of food items, including things like Pringles and spaghetti sauce.)
Setting alarms on his watch for sunset? Brilliant, smart idea, fantastic. Re-enforced windows and door, AND booby-trapped house? Incredible, genius. Setting traps to catch the zomvamps? (like the dumb name I just came up with? Don’t worry, I’ll reveal the stupid arbitrary name they ACTUALLY came up with later) Talent, intelligence.
Dude, why wouldn’t you restrain the head/chest? You know, the part that can bite you? (Picture: Will Smith in a lab coat standing over a female zombie-vampire who’s been secured to a metal bench by the wrists and ankles. Medical monitors are connected to her.)
Now, Will Smith is out here looking for a cure. And by looking, I mean actively creating. In a lab. He washes his hands before going in - *chef’s kiss* follow his example - and unlike other zombie movies where it’s super dramatic in the hunt for a cure, this is a lot more chill considering it’s a) been 3 years and b) is more like how science actually works. Trials, tests, animal test-subjects (there is a debate about the ethics of this which I won’t go into here) (I mean a debate in real life not in the zombie movie haha) and human test-subjects.
“Did you kidnap my girlfriend, bro?” (Picture: bald, pale muscular dude-bro-looking zombie-vampire roaring in rage.)
The mother-fracking zombies
I have to say it: these are the most dumbass looking vampire-zombies. I say vampire-zombies (zomvamps) because they avoid sunlight but also eat people?
Now, unlike most zombie movies, these are really bloody intelligent zomvamps. At one point, after setting a booby trap and catching a zomvamp after stumbling into a nest of them, Robert says “They’re not showing any human social behaviour.” Hahahaha. Okay bitch first of all dude bro screamed when you kidnapped his mate, secondly dude bro has pet dogs, thirdly dude bro fucking caught you in a trap. He took revenge on you there, love. He followed you home!
The zomvamps are apex predators, can climb, run, hunt in packs, communicate with each other, set booby traps, make coordinated attacks, follow you home, learn where you live and remember it, and holy fuck humans had no chance.
Thank you for clarifying, because I actually found this quite funny. Like, look at him! (Picture: dude-bro zombie-vampire from earlier growling in front of a flaming car. The zombie-vampires are very CGI, pale, fish-person looking things with pale skin and completely bald of hair. This guy is wearing ripped clothes. The caption reads “Growls menacingly”.)
Random things I have in my notes but haven’t mentioned yet (yes I took notes)
What’s with the apocalypse and mannequins? Looking at you, Five (Umbrella Academy).
(Picture: Will Smith looking at a “female” mannequin, who is dressed in a coat and black bob wig. They’re in a movie store. Funnily enough, behind the mannequin is the “Adult” section of the films.)
I agree with the fuck-that-shit sentiment when you see a mannequin suddenly appear in a different part of the city - like how in the hell??
(Picture: Will Smith aiming a rifle at a mannequin in an orange jumper. Mannequin is usually located outside of the movie store, yet here it is randomly in the middle of the street at the end of a T-section. There are tall glass windows behind the mannequin, and the window to the right has a giant, gaping pitch black hole in it. It’s presumed that there is a nest of zombie-vampires in there.)
... so is this a booby trap for humans or for zomvamps? Because the former makes sense if that dude bro zomvamp analysed Will Smith’s trap from earlier and remade it (hence dropped the car off a bridge to string him up), and the latter doesn’t really make sense because a) you’ll only catch (and probably kill) one zomvamp and why would you want only one unless you’re Robert and two why tf aren’t you meeting up with Robert he’s been broadcasting and racing around town hunting deer (elk?) in a sports car.
I’d like to know how hard it actually is to do like a weird sit-up and get yourself free of one of these kinds of traps. Am I dumb for thinking it’s not that hard? (Picture: Will Smith is suspended in the air by a rope tied around his ankle, the result of a booby-trap. He’s struggling to free himself.)
Come on, you’re literally a doctor and a soldier. Don’t tell me you’re actually considering pulling that out? (Picture: Will Smith has been impaled in the leg by something. It looks like he’s about to attempt to pull it out. He’s in the middle of the street as the sun sets, and Sam is right next to him.)
Sam is a queen. Here are some photos of her.
(Picture: Robert Neville’s wife carrying a baby Sam - Sam is a puppy, by the way, and very adorable. Neville’s young daughter is walking out of the gate to their house behind her mother.)
(Picture: Will Smith in a flashback saying goodbye to his wife and daughter and crying. Sam is licking away his tears.)
Sometimes I hate foreshadowing. (Picture: Will Smith searching a house. He opens a cupboard and there’s a newspaper article with a picture of a zombie-vampire dog. The article reads “Infected dogs can come out at dusk. Stay in the light.” There’s a number to call for questions.)
Worst birthday ever. Now I’m sad and there’s still half the movie left.
(Picture: Will Smith sitting on the floor of his lab, hugging Sam, who’s just been bitten by infected dogs.)
Get Shrek’d.
(Picture: The ‘Shrek’ movie playing on the TV in Neville’s house.)
Ma’am, do you not know how to ration? That is such a waste of food. (Picture: the woman and kid who rescued Will Smith have cooked breakfast. She’s cooked way too many scrambled eggs for two adults and a kid, and all the of the bacon for literally no reason.)
Oh yeah, wanna know what they call the zombies in this movie?
Dark Seekers. They dropped that one on us well into the final half of the movie. Dark Seekers? Really? I won’t get into how dumb that sounds when you had two options to choose from - vampires and zombies. Hell, go with my suggestion of zomvamps, even vampzoms. Dark Seekers? Sorry, I get hung up on dumb zombie-alternative names. Sure, I get the atmosphere might be ruined by calling them vampires or zombies, but not even lying I didn’t realise she said “Dark Seekers” until I turned the CC on to grab a quote. I thought she said “Dog Keepers” hahahaha. “The dog keepers got them.” My defence is that the dude bro did keep dogs.
Finally, wrapping this up at 2:15 before I add in pictures, you’re telling me approximately 100 zomvamps made a coordinated attack on Will Smith’s house to eat... 3 people? That’s like me and a hundred mates descending on the pentagon for a fucking snickers bar. We’d get like an atom each.
Oh, what’s that? They’re here to rescue one person? Really? Really? How in the fuck are they even zombies if their primary purpose isn’t to eat humans. I’m disappointed. But points for a fresh take, at least.
Now one of the things I remember about this movie is that is has an alternate ending. The actual ending (huge spoilers but then again, you’re in the spoiler section) has Will Smith sacrifice himself (read: blow himself and the zomvamps up with a grenade) to defend the cure and save his new friends. The alternate ending, which was scrapped due to negative audience reaction, has Will Smith communicate with the zomvamps who like actually calm down and listen to him. He gives the dude bro back his friend, and... no one dies.
I’m sorry, how is an ending where, sure, a cure isn’t found YET, but, the “villains” of the movie are humanised and a new side of them is seen that shows, hey, maybe there’s another way through this apocalypse, better than an ending where Will Smith dies? Make it make sense test audience. Because, remember, there’s still a whole bunch of immune people living out here, and three of them are currently in the same room. Robert’s only been working on the cure for 3 years. How many years do you reckon it takes to cure cancer? Hint: it’s ongoing in real life. Just because the cure isn’t found in the movie doesn’t mean it won’t be found. Ughhhh. I digress again.
I have more random photos but I am very tired. If anyone’s interested in hearing me roast butterflies, the world not actually ending in 2012, and a missed pun about Until Dawn (even though it was made like ten years after this), and a quick analysis on Robert Neville and God, let me know :)
Have a great day everyone, wash your hands, social distance if possible, and quarantine. Just because the COVID-19 virus isn’t turning us into zombies doesn’t mean it isn’t hurting us.
Worldwide statistics, 9/10/2020: 36.2M total cases, 25.3M recovered, 1.06M deaths.
(Picture: Will Smith saying “I like ‘Shrek’ after just quoting an entire scene of it to win a kid’s trust.)

JESSE JO STARK: I’M DOING MY BEST TO GIVE FANS A SAFE PLACE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES
We call up the LA singer-songwriter to talk about working with Yungblud, challenging music industry toxicity and the hidden meaning behind new track “Tangerine”.
When you think the words “indie rock” what comes to mind? If it’s exclusively scruffy Brits (guilty as charged!) then broaden your horizons with Jesse Jo Stark. The godchild of Cher and daughter of Richard and Laurie Stark, the duo behind rock n’ roll outfitters Chrome Hearts, she’s been steeped in art, music and fashion from a young age – and it shows.
Now, she’s all grown-up and a bonafide Malibu dream girl penning introspective, seventies-tinged songs of longing and loss that you can’t help but sing along to. A Stevie Nicks for the iPhone Generation, she’s honed a femme fatale persona for both the stage and IG, where she enjoys a 300,000 strong following of fans who eagerly hang on to every one of her cryptic captions.
Curious to get to know the woman behind the mystique, we call Jesse up to talk all about her musical origins, working with Youngblud and latest track “Tangerine”.
Lovely to meet you Jesse! Let’s talk about your beginnings as a musician: when did you first start making music?
I used to think that songs just came into existence and spilled through the radio speakers like magic. as soon as I realised that someone actually wrote them and made an idea into something real, I’ve been making records. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing or writing words or playing guitar.
And who are your main musical inspirations?
The Cramps, Linda Ronstadt, Merle Haggard, The Clash… I also love when artists that I respect make playlists introducing me to new types of music. I’ve recently fallen in love with Sharon Van Etten, Blood Orange, Big Thief, and The National. I’m an obsessive person with the things I love so when I like a song I listen to every song by that artist and that always leads me to another.
So how would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
I never know how to answer this question but I love how my band describes it: “it’s like romance, ‘70s AM radio with your lover’s head on your shoulder, but it’s also eerie like the Devil’s wind.
What’s been the biggest moment of your career so far?
Touring. I love playing every night and looking into different people’s eyeballs while I sing to them. I miss visiting new cities and meeting new people. When I walk on stage and my band starts playing and I see a room full of people take their time to fall into me. When they start to dance and wrap themselves around each other it makes me believe in magic again. It feels like we are all under the same spell.
And outside of music, what are you passionate about?
My family and friends, my clothing line Deadly Doll, driving, cooking, arts and crafts, my dog Billie, reading, writing and the beach… I’m a little bit Cali.
Yeah, I hear you’re LA born and bred, which must have been great! How has living in the city impacted your sound?
It’s impossible to know what a city does to a person’s taste, but the people I’ve had around me have had everything to do with it: music is God in my family… Plus, I’m sure being dipped in sunshine does something to a girl’s voice.
I’m sure! What’s something you wished people knew about you?
That I’ve been playing and writing music my entire life! I don’t think people really realise that writing songs and making records is the main thing that I do and something I have always done.
Your parents are well known as the founders of legendary brand Chrome Hearts — have they influenced your decision to pursue a creative career?
My parents are my favourite legends. I’ve watched them work tirelessly my entire life and build and support the other people in their community. It’s all about connection with them, making honest pieces that add to the world. That’s what I want to carry on.
Coming from such a fashion-conscious background, is style an important form of self-expression for you?
I have an anxious reaction to style and art that manifests in endless strings of ideas on how to make it more interesting to me. The reinventing and refining process is what creativity is to me. I never like to follow another mood board: it’s all about making your own.
Here’s one for the Yungblud stans out there. What was working with Dom on the “Strawberry Lipstick” video like?
It was just a really fun day! I was stoked to be a part of it, aesthetically it felt right at home for me. I fully understand the Dom craze now and I’m into it
I hear you’ve also been busy with an exciting music project of your own: tell me about your new track “Tangerine”.
“Tangerine” is a transformation about a complex character living with different moods and shedding layers. Once you peel back that skin you get the sweetness.
Love that metaphor! I’m also loving the video that’s coming out for it too, what were you trying to express there?
This video is so important to me because it was filmed in Malibu, where I grew up. I was so embarrassed about that for so long because everyone has such a weird vibe about the westside and LA. But I grew up here, my friends and family are from here. I was a misfit by the beach and just like the tune being about what’s underneath the face, this video highlights where I grew up. It’s me, just lipstick, denim and my Camino, driving past places I used to smoke, make out, swim and fall over and over again to learn about myself.
On a heavier note, there’s recently been a round of high-profile sexual misconduct allegations about men in the rock and indie scenes. What steps do you think the music industry needs to take to make it a safer and less toxic environment for women, people of colour and queer people?
Hearing allegations about sexual misconduct is always disappointing. The toxic masculinity women have to endure on a day to day basis is unsettling, but it doesn’t end there, because we are also dealing with diversity issues as well. People are being judged for their unique differences — be it race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities or religious beliefs. We are obviously not doing enough to educate people.
I think the best thing we can do is to talk about it and keep talking about it until bolder solutions are being presented. Personally, I’m trying to do my best to be a strong woman and give my fans a safe place to express themselves.
Education is definitely an important one, I don’t think we can ever overstate that. So what’s the biggest thing you’ve learned in 2020?
Being grounded, love, patience and letting go. The world is so silly sometimes and we forget to inspire each other. Nothing really matters except those moments when you feel the life you’re living. We need to slow down, clean up, live true and lead with love.
Finally, what are your hopes for the next year?
I hope for love and continued change. I hope, in the US, that we find ourselves in the hands of a real leader that leads with kindness and empathy. I hope we all can reflect on the current conditions and act gracefully by supporting each other, hearing each other and respecting each other.

Rob Zombie's 31 (2015) arrives on Blu-ray + Digital Steelbook from Lionsgate, exclusively at Target 10/26
From beloved cult director Rob Zombie comes the new re-release of his spine-tingling carnival of horrors, 31, arriving October 26th on Blu-ray + Digital Steelbook from Lionsgate, exclusively at Target. Written, directed, and produced by Zombie, 31 is a fiendish Halloween horror-gore romp set in 1976, in which five happy-go-lucky carnies on a cross-country road trip are kidnapped and hunted by murderous clowns in an escape room-style hideaway in the middle of nowhere. With an ensemble cast that includes Sheri Moon Zombie, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Richard Brake, Jane Carr, and Malcolm McDowell, 31 is tailor-made for diehard horror fans and Rob Zombie acolytes. Featuring brand-new reconceived artwork from award-winning graphic artist Vance Kelly, 31 will be available on Blu-ray + Digital Steelbook at Target for the suggested retail price of $21.99.
On Halloween, five carnival employees are kidnapped and held hostage in an isolated compound known as "Murderworld." They are thrown into a sadistic game called “31” where they must survive 12 hours against a gang of maniacs dressed like clowns. However, the clowns aren't the only ones they need to worry about — a grand scheme of satanic rituals and a much more sadistic plot awakens.

Image above [not mine]: Macro shot of an LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor showing the red, green and blue elements
LCD screens
White light is made up of all colours because it contains all wavelengths
White objects appear white because they reflect all colours, black objects absorb all colours so no light is reflected
The primary colours of light are Red, Green and Blue. Mixing these can make all the colours of the light we see eg. TV, computer
Each pixel contains Red, Green and Blue
Screen manufacturers use the way our brain composes colour to trick our brain into seeing colours that are not there
Mixing paints eg. each colour of paint is absorbing certain colours and reflecting others. Each time another colour of paint is mixed in, there are more colours absorbed and less are reflected
1890 — the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) was invented by Karl Ferdinand Braun. his device was able to produce images via electron beams bombarding a phosphorescent surface. This technology was developed and first commercialised in the 1920s as it became the dominant form of display for many devices
1907 — the natural phenomena of Electroluminescence was discovered by H. J. round. This later lead to the first LED (light emitting diodes) being developed by Oleg Lossev in 1927
1950s — Solari or Flip-Flap boards were electromechanical display devices capable of displaying alphanumerical text and/or graphics. commonly found in transport stations and airports (now mostly replaced with digital monitors)
— Vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) was first introduced by Philips in their single indication DM160 (voltage indicator I think?). it is still a common sight on things like car stereos today
1960s — the first monochrome plasma display was first described in the 1930s and the first practical example was developed in the 1960s. It provided a rather “garish” orange/black and white monochrome colour due to the orange colour of the neon gas in the lamps used in the first TV sets
— Stroboscopic displays were first used in the Russian RASA calculator and worked by a spinning cylinder using a motor to display a number of transparent numerals, and using a brief flash of a backlight when in position
— Richard Williams had research of nematic liquid crystals, so experimented with various compounds and tin-oxide electrodes to find a strong electric field across the setup to yield stripped patterns, and eventually RCA Labs was able to show the world the first LCDs in 1968
— the idea of touchscreen technology first suggested by Eric Johnson in 1965, appeared in the 1980s and 90s and introduced to the market from companies like Fujitsu, SEGA, IBM, Microsoft, Apple and HP
— an interesting aspect — “In 1967, it was our own BBC who pioneered the first colour broadcasting anywhere in Europe. However, the standard selected, PAL, which stands for Phase Alternating Line, was in fact a German improvement of the mid-50s American colour system. PAL was developed at Telefunken under Walter Bruch between 1962 and 1965.
Colour broadcasts began on BBC2 in 1967, arriving on ITV and BBC1 in 1969. To support the costs, colour TV licences were introduced on 1st January 1968, costing £10—twice the price of the standard £5 black and white TV license. Today, the colour license costs £145.50—three times the price of the black and white license at £49.”
1970s — electronic paper or e-paper became popular in the early 2000s, it mimicked the appliance of ordinary ink on paper. Like OLED (organic EL diode, is a light-emitting diode in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current), electronic paper is able to generate its own visible light yet can maintain the ouster of traditional paper, ideal e-paper displays are those that can be read in direct sunlight without the image fading
— another interesting aspect — for decades, the hearing-impaired were left with no way to adequately watch television. In 1971, developers at a conference provided a successful demonstration of a captioning system. Occasionally described as subtitles, it’s actually different in that subtitles simply transcribe the action via Teletext. Captioning goes into greater detail, attempting to describe all audio cues for the deaf viewer. Originally implemented slowly, legislation required closed captioning by 1993
— Electroluminescent Displays (ELDs) are flat panel displays that consist of layered of electroluminescent material sandwiched between two conductors. As current flows, the layer of luminescent material emits radiation in the form of visible light. Used in industrial instrumentation and transportation applications (cars), and tend to be monochromatic
1980s — Super-twisted nematic field effect (STN) was invented in 1983. a later development of colour STN was developed in the 1990s which wer colour forms of passive matrix LCD and begin to appear in early mobile phones like Nokia
— Thin film transistor LCDs are variants of LCDs the integrate thin-film-transistor technology to improve image quality. this form of display uses an active matrix LCD, in contrast to passive or direct-driven LCDs like its ancestors. For comparison, an examples of direct-driven LCDs are the displays of calculators. today these are commonly found in many devices form TVs to computer monitors
1990s — the worlds first 107cm plasma display, thanks to Fujitsu, was introduced in 1995. it had an impressive 852 x 480 resolution and was progressively scanned. Philips followed suit in 1997 with their own version. Plasma TVs at this time had an average price of $15k. Advantages of LCD screens are that they usually have better resolution, they're more energy efficient (sometimes using half the power of a plasma screen), and they're lighter, making them more portable than plasma screens. In addition, if an image remains on a plasma screen for a relatively long period of time, it can get burned onto the plasma screen, and it can take a few days until the image fades away, something that rarely affects LCD screens. The advantages of plasma screens are that the colors are more vibrant, the blacks are deeper, and even viewers sitting at extreme angles can still see a decent picture. While plasma screens used to do better than LCDs in terms of fast-moving images not producing a blur, it seems that LCDs are starting to improve in this area.

The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Sunday 28th January 2018
Hello, Good Morning and Welcome…. I’ll let you guess what Sunday was named after. No, go ahead; I’ll wait. Come on…it’s big, gassy, and orange; and it’s not your uncle on Halloween.
GLASGOW PRIMARK SELLING BASEBALL CAPS EMBLAZONED WITH THE WORD ‘HUN’…. A branch of Primark in Glasgow is attracting attention on social media - because of a three-letter word on hats for sale in the store. A tweet by Glasgow-based journalist Aoife-Grace Moore showed a picture of a grey baseball cap with the word ‘Hun’ on the front of it. Ms Moore accompanied her photo with the caption: “Dear Primark Glasgow: This is a very very bad idea.” Although the word is ordinarily recognised as a shortened version of the word ‘honey’, it has an alternative meaning in Glasgow, having been used as a derogatory slur against Protestants and Rangers supporters. In June 2016, fans of the Ibrox club lobbied to make the use of the word in a footballing context a hate crime, and viewed in the same light as ‘fenian’, a derogatory term for Catholics. Research carried out by communications regulator Ofcom later that year deemed ‘hun’ to be inoffensive, describing it as: “Mild language, generally of little concern. However, seen as less acceptable by those familiar with the history and use of the term as a sectarian insult.” However, in 2015, then Celtic striker John Guidetti was charged by the Scottish FA over a TV interview he conducted with a Dutch broadcaster, in which he repeated the words of a song that Celtic supporters had sung which included the term.

Mr Ward charges a base fee of £125 for a men’s cut and finish, his website states. According to The Sun, the cut was reportedly carried out by Joey Wheeler, one of Mr Ward’s deputies, during a private session at Kensington Palace. Younger brother Prince Harry, 33, has openly joked about William’s receding hairline and once said: “I think he definitely is brainier than I am - but we established that at school, along with his baldness.”
CALLS FOR RETHINK AS HOLYROOD PIGEONS NOW ‘WISE’ TO BIRDS OF PREY…. HOLYROOD bosses have been urged to think again about their decision to spend £80,000 on using birds of prey to scare pigeons away from the Scottish Parliament building over the next five years. Hawks and falcons are brought in regularly to fly over the parliament in a bid to deter pigeons from making it their home – but MSPs claim the pigeons have got wise to the practice and now just wait for the birds to be driven off by their handler before settling back on the roofs and ledges of the £414 million building. The parliament has renewed its maintenance contract – of which the birds of prey are now a part – for another five years with a possible two-year extension. Overall pigeon numbers are thought to have been reduced as far as they are likely to go, but the parliament believes the hawks and falcons are necessary to stop them increasing again. However, Lothian Tory MSP Miles Briggs, a member of the cross-party animal welfare group at Holyrood, said it was time to reconsider spending so much money on a bird handler coming to Holyrood and flying birds of prey. “I don’t think they have looked at how effective it is actually being,” he said. “For a lot of building users it has become a bit of a joke. The pigeons are sitting up on Arthur’s Seat waiting for him to go away. “The pigeons seem to be quite bright. The effectiveness of him turning up now and again is questionable at least.”
SCOTTISH RESEARCHERS ISSUE QUIDDITCH HEALTH WARNING…. It’s the biggest sport in the wizarding world, but now muggles have been issued with a safety warning. Quidditch, the fictional sport played on broomsticks in the Harry Potter series has found a following among non magic folk (muggles) across the world. They may not be able to take to the skies like their literary counterparts but the past time is still fraught with hazards, a health study has found. The research - led by Edinburgh University’s medical school - issued a warning about the competitive nature of the game. A paper in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy found it can lead to high rates of concussion among players, prompting experts to draft guidelines to improve the game’s safety. In the fictional version players use flying broomsticks. Quidditch is a fast growing, physically intense, full-contact sport. Originally adapted from JK Rowling’s novels, quidditch was first played in 2005 in the USA but is now played worldwide. Two teams attempt to get a ball, the ‘quaffle’, through tall standing hoops. The game only ends when ends if another ball, the ‘snitch’ is caught. A total of 348 participants of 684 eligible quidditch players responded to the health study. There were 315 injuries reported by 180 athletes in total, an overall incidence of 4.06 injuries per 1,000 hours of play. A statistically significantly different rate of concussion was observed with female athletes in the mixed gender sport sustaining more concussion than males. Over 20 per cent of quidditch injuries reported were described as ‘concussion’.
PETER PAN HOUSE PROJECT FUNDING BID BACKED…. A council has endorsed a bid for a final slice of funding to help create a national centre for children's literature in Dumfries. It has applied for £600,000 to help complete the last phase of conversion work on the Moat Brae mansion. The gardens of the building were credited by JM Barrie for helping to inspire him to write Peter Pan. Dumfries and Galloway Council has already given £500,000 towards the scheme but is seeking further funds. A report to the local authority said £7.4m was now in place towards the major overhaul of the site. However, the additional £600,000 is needed to complete the project. The Scottish government's Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) has been identified as a potential source of funding but it is only open to local authority applications. The council has submitted a bid with the outcome expected to be known by March. If it is successful, the local authority will be required to monitor the project and submit a post-completion evaluation of the scheme. It has therefore agreed to update its service level agreement with the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust should the funding bid be approved.
