Speculative Design: A tool to address women’s safety in the public environment.
Third Year Final Project.
My project explores the relationship between the public environment and women’s safety, focusing largely on gender-based public sexual harassment. I developed a process of engagement to produce wild, speculative outputs that allow for different types of discussions. My hope is that these discussions will bring about ideas and alterations to the current social environment that would ultimately create a safer public environment for women. From carrying out this process, I have designed a range of outputs that span different forms to spark conversations, and each output resembles a different concern raised by separate women. My hope is that by addressing the issue from a range of different angles, this project will encourage conversations that can influence policy change, employment laws, architectural developments and all other areas where the issue of women’s safety permeates our society.

MANIFESTO
A manifesto I wrote to ensure my work didn’t become another ‘preventative’ measure for women. My manifesto evolved throughout this project as I learnt new things and understood my objective better.

‘ABTV’
The concept for this project came from my escapism, is people watching. I wanted to implement a tool for me to be nosy and for it to be a shared ‘guilty pleasure’ for all to indulge in. I designed a television production company, called ABTV, that has a variety of channels that share my nosy thoughts and observations as television channels. The proposal acts as a presentation for only a few of ABTV production’s shows and briefly outlines the process of the shows’ creation and a synopsis of it. The video acts a prototype for how the TV channels would appear if a viewer was flipping through ABTV channels.

‘Reclaim, Rework, Revive’
The UK Roundabout Appreciation Society (UKRAS) is a collection of individuals who visit, discuss, and appreciate roundabouts around the country. Kevin Beresford, the founder of UKRAS, speaks about these mundane and man-made structures that usually we take no interest in and glorifies them by declaring them beautiful and God-like. In this project we created responses to UKRAS in the format of a website, a proposal and two short films.

‘Upcycling for your vegetable garden’
A publication and website that lists methods to upcycle your household waste into a vegetable garden, in hope that individuals will be encouraged to do the same in order to better themselves as well as the environment. By following the process of collecting and archiving my household waste I was able to actualise my gardening research, proving that upcycling not only works but can provide greater value than its initial use. The website was designed for sharing, and by doing so I hope it will inspire people to be more innovative with their unwanted objects and materials.

‘The Seven Stages of Brief’
An ecology manifesto of ideas and experiences to consider when approaching a new brief. This zine follows our seven stages of grief for the planet we are killing. What should we be considering, in regards to the environment, when we work? How engaged are we with the outside world within our practice? What follows is a manifesto, looking at the climate crisis from many angles and with critical eyes.

‘For the love of Vintage Football shirts’
This publication shows the progressive journey we have taken, gathering a range of primary research in the field of vintage football shirts. Initially speaking to a shop keeper and interviewing collectors and fans of football, we deepened our understanding of why there is a market for vintage football shirts; what specific features dictate the value of a shirt, what makes shirts more desirable than others, and what sort of motivations led people to collect shirts. Discovering historical relevance and iconic moments that define specific kits inspired us to try and reproduce the emotions and feelings felt when observing and handling them. To execute this research concept, we transferred certain design elements into fashion garments. Exposing our garments to fans allowed us to reflect on how effective our work was.

‘Tea Ceremony’
My housemates and I all share a fondness for tea; this guided my decision to create a teapot. The teapot consists of elements from each of our preferred mugs to transform them into a set, intending for us to perform our variant of a tea ceremony. The ceremony's purpose is to encourage us to re-connect and open up about our individual experiences on a weekly basis. The aim of carrying out this inspiring routine is to strengthen our bonds, help support each other mentally, and to celebrate the wondrous simplicity of sharing a cup of tea with friends.

‘Deceptive Marketing’
A project exploring the how large cooperations produce and advertise popular products and how they are exploiting their consumers.

‘Building Blocks’
A project in which I create two new typefaces.
Typeface One: Using only wire tape and a scalpel I designed a new typeface and digitalised it using illustrator.
Typeface Two: I designed a new typeface from a found object (a stapler). By taking photos of the stapler from various angles I was able to play with its form to create a new form of typography.

‘The Journey of Greed’
These images represent a journey through vulnerability, vanity and greediness.
“Greed begins with emptiness and vulnerability, which describe the attributes of our character. The character tires to fill themselves with anything they can to make them feel safe. The character becomes materialistic and arrogant due to feeling desolate and worthless. This can only last so long. The character has been greedy for too long. They are blinded by their greed and have lost their dignity. Their life is no longer lavish or luxurious, instead it is cold, withered and once again, empty.”
