Love moved closer, their smile widening. “Because it’s your birthday. And no one should spend their birthday alone.”

He sighed, leaning back in his chair. “Love, we’ve talked about this. Birthdays are... irrelevant to me. I see no reason to celebrate something so trivial.”

Love’s expression softened, but they didn’t back down. Instead, they perched on the arm of his chair, leaning toward him. “Maybe you don’t see a reason, but I do. It’s a day that marks the beginning of you. And that’s worth celebrating.”

He chuckled, a low, rich sound. “I’ve been around for so long that the beginning feels like a myth. Besides, what would you even celebrate? My survival? My stubbornness?”

“Your existence,” Love said simply. “The fact that you’re here, with me, in this moment. That’s worth everything.”

Xanthus looked at them, his crimson eyes softening. “You’re relentless, aren’t you?”

“Always,” they replied with a grin. “Now, are you going to humor me, or am I going to have to drag you out of this chair myself?”

Before he could respond, Love revealed what they’d been hiding behind their back—a small, elegantly wrapped box tied with a ribbon. They held it out to him, their eyes bright with anticipation.

“I thought you didn’t care for material gifts,” Xanthus teased, though he took the box from their hands with care.

“I don’t,” they said, “but this isn’t just a gift. It’s something I thought you might actually appreciate.”

Intrigued, he pulled the ribbon loose and lifted the lid. Inside was a leather-bound journal, its cover engraved with intricate patterns of roses and vines. His initials were embossed in the corner, and when he opened it, he found the first page filled with Love’s handwriting.

“For Xanthus, whose presence makes eternity bearable. May this be a place to hold your thoughts, your stories, and your memories.”

He traced the words with his fingertips, his expression unreadable. After a long moment, he looked up at them. “This is... thoughtful. Far more than I deserve.”

“Don’t say that,” Love said firmly. “You deserve everything, Xanthus. And more.”

He set the journal down and stood, pulling them into a gentle embrace. “You have an uncanny way of making me feel human again, Love.”

They wrapped their arms around him, pressing their cheek against his chest. “That’s because you are, in so many ways. And you deserve to be celebrated, even if you don’t think so.”

He rested his chin on their head, holding them close as a rare warmth spread through him. For the first time in centuries, the weight of time felt lighter, the day brighter.

“Thank you,” he murmured, his voice low but sincere. “For reminding me that some things are still worth marking, even after all this time.”

They pulled back just enough to look up at him, their smile radiant. “So, does that mean you’ll let me celebrate your birthday every year?”

He chuckled, shaking his head. “We’ll see.”

But as Love led him out of the study, chattering excitedly about the cake they’d made and the quiet celebration they had planned, Xanthus couldn’t help but feel that maybe—just maybe—birthdays weren’t so pointless after all.

I have a question, but it may be already have been answered in the story (my brain is just not the best with memory).

Since vampirism symbolises for you chronical illness (which, omg, that is a hot take I've never thought off before and love from now on), does Steve count as chronical ill, too, with the whole halfvampire thing going on? So, would his uncontrollable time jumping each month be a symptom of that chronical illness?

not in the story, no worries! Just a possible interpretation and my personal intent when writing.

As a small aside I personally don't like to think of chronic illness as something that people "count" as, so to speak, it's an extremely personal label and incredibly varied between individuals and as with all disability there is never such thing as hard lines or black and white... but I understand why you worded it that way and I understand what you're asking.

So, yes, Steve is also chronically ill within this framework. The entire comic is sort of shaped around this, to be honest! I mean he canonically has some pretty extreme memory issues... He's also canonically homeless (not that this is an illness but I just mean it's something I think most people forget about him when discussing him). And, yes, his condition is uncontrollable and is severely impacting his ability to live the life he wants to live.

He has just been barely coping up to the point we meet him, and has been very desperate which is what led him to creating that list of deviations. He has periods where his body is out of his control, he is unable to form relationships, he hurts others without meaning or wanting to... Yeah. He's metaphorically relating to a lot of things, really.

So, yknow, you're welcome to interpret him as you'd like! for me I relate a lot with my various issues and conditions and thus that's why I've projected on him the way I have, but of course I would understand entirely different interpretations of what is inherently metaphorical.

They leaned into his touch, their eyes searching his. “Xanthus, I’m not afraid. I’ve made up my mind. I want to be with you, for however long forever is.”

He closed his eyes briefly, as if waging an internal battle. When he opened them again, they were filled with a mixture of sorrow and longing. “This isn’t a decision you can take lightly. I won’t do it unless I’m certain you truly understand what you’re asking for.”

“I do,” they insisted. “I’ve thought about it for so long. Please, Xanthus. Trust me.”

He pulled them into a gentle embrace, his arms wrapping around them as if shielding them from the weight of their choice. “This isn’t about trust. It’s about protecting you—from the pain, the regret, the endlessness of it all.”

rewatched half of dirk gently's holistic detective agency with a friend last night it's literally soooo good it's such a shame no one's watched it. big fan of manic pixie dream guy psychic detectives who escaped from a secret government facility, elijah wood playing the most confused pathetic man alive, punk girls with disabilities and the energy vampires who help her with it, bodyguards with way too much anxiety 5 seconds away from a breakdown, kitten sharks, assassins who are practically immortal whose targets are dictated by the universe itself and their sopping wet cat of a boyfriend who's secretly a criminal mastermind, ex rockstars body swapping rich girls with dogs, and shapeshifters who almost exclusively shapeshift into inanimate objects

When I was with my native friends or alone by myself I bartered aggressively with the boat shuttle guy to go from Panajachel to any of the other lake-side villages and had been accustomed to paying a certain rate.

The like…3rd(?) time I went there I met and befriended some english-speaking expats and one day that friend group and I went to hop on the boat and they just walked through paying MORE THAN SIX TIMES the amount I had ever paid. (It was still like maybe 7 bucks CAD for a very long boat trip but it’s the principle of the thing) and I tried to do my normal barter but because they lumped me in with the other expats they WOULD NOT BUDGE and to this day I’m grumpy about it. Next time I made sure I was first in line and negotiated for our entire group and it worked.

I’m picking up way more Norwegian than i expected watching Skam. I fully expected that I’d watch the entire series once through understanding practically nothing of the audio and then in subsequent rewatches after having really picked up my studies (I’m at zero studies rn) start picking up words and phrases.

I’ve already got the days of the week, quite a few personal pronouns, several variations of hello and goodbye, some numbers, variations of yes and no, please and thank you, sorry, and a few short phrases (it’s all right, are you ok. Are you sure- that kind of thing) that I can understand while having looked away from the screen and missed the subtitle, and I’m only in episode 7.
