It annoys me that Rhaenys the Queen Who Never Was gets dismissed so steadily. She was third in line for the throne until her father's death. Than whoops Succession Crisis What About Rhalla and Aerea!?! That problem would have still been there if Aemon lived and taken the throne. So why is Jaehaerys betraying his granddaughter so applauded? The Great Councils did nothing but kick the problem down the generations.
First thing I want to point out here is that I don’t think that Jaehaerys passing over Rhaenys in succession is applauded, at least not from what I’ve seen? What I’ve seen is explanations that offer a more nuanced reasoning beyond Jaehaerys simply being a misogynistic jerk who thought women shouldn’t rule. It might be that Jaehaerys’ decision did derive from a degree of misogyny - Queen Alysanne certainly seemed to think if the Second Quarrel is anything to judge by, but I personally like to think there is a deeper reason because this move shows uncustomary behavior from Jaehaerys. Certainly the guy who made policy changes on the recommendation of his queen and who actively demonstrated political trust in her to where it was said that she ruled the realm as much as he did doesn’t seem likely to pass over his granddaughter simply due to her gender. It also stands to reason that the political partnership of Jaehaerys and Alysanne was likely informed by the crucial political role their mother Alyssa Velaryon and their eldest sister Rhaena played in saving the Targrayen dynasty after Aenys’ weak rule and Maegor’s brutality threatened to do it in, and in winning Jaehaerys his throne in the first place. It is only by the action, bravery and (personal and political) sacrifice of two women that Jaehaerys was coronated in the first place, and Queen Alyssa then held the realm together in the aftermath of war and huge instability for two years till Jaehaerys reached his majority. That the three most prominent women in Jaehaerys’ life were all such active and astute political actors who not only shaped his life but also his reign makes me think there has to be more to his decision to pass over Rhaenys than just prejudice. I also think there could be thematic resonance to Jaehaerys’ decision to bypass his grandaughter’s rights to stave off instability paralleling his sister’s Rhaena’s own decision to bypass her daughters’ rights for a similar reason, and how that juxtaposes against the rampant selfishness of the two sides of the Dance of the Dragons.
Another point of discussion is why concerns about Rhalla and Aerea’s lines only emerged after Aemon’s death and why hadn’t Jaehaerys acted before. That part is a bit hard to discern because we don’t know what Prince Aemon and Jocelyn Baratheon’s fertility history was like. Rhaenys was their only daughter but it is possible that they had either conceived again or at least were trying to since producing a male heir was widely seen as securing the line of succession in a way that a female heir wasn’t. If Aemon and Jocelyn conceived again after Rhaenys or even had children who died in infancy, the issue of the claim of Rhalla and Aerea’s line might not have seemed as dire since there was still hope that Aemon, who was only in his thirties when he died, would have a son, something that was soundly lost with his death. So it might not be necessarily true that concern about his nieces’ lines only came to Jaehaerys’ mind after Aemon’s death as much as that Aemon’s death made Rhaenys’ succession a matter of course which in turn made the possibility of conflicting rival claims to the throne more real prompting Jaehaerys to take action to settle the matter.
As for the Great Council, certainly it is one of the dark ironies of the series that Jaehaerys’ speculated attempt to get ahead of a possible succession debate and war ends up being used to inspire the biggest civil war in Targaryen history. But that’s to blame on Viserys I’s laziness and refusal to deal with the complicated legalities of the succession during his reign rather than on the efficiency of a Great Council. The purpose of a Great Council was to put succession debates to a majority vote rather than the arbitrary choice of the king which is a pretty sound political and legal move all things considered. That’s a solid solution since it decides succession by the will of the vassals over whom the king claimed the right to rule while establishing a body of authority to decide matters of succession allowing for such debates to be settled peacefully and curtailing possible wars. That Viserys I chose to overcomplicate succession by not only ignoring the legal argument that put him in power in the first place when naming his daughter heiress but also by refusing to settle a painfully obvious succession debate in which the two legal precedents clashed is to be blamed on him rather than the Great Council or Jaehaerys I. Viserys set the stage for the Dance by unnecessarily making an already complicated legal matter worse, ignoring the blatant bad blood between the blacks and the greens then stupidly setting the greens up with all the authority they needed to force the issue. Viserys is the one who kicked the problem down a generation while offering no alternate solution and taking no decisive action to settle the matter peacefully. Putting the blame of that on either Jaehaerys or the Great Council exonerates Viserys from much of his ineptitude and willful inaction.

Valyrian Translator
Tumblr media
So what if you do actually want to learn Dothraki or Valyrian? Of course, the ideal scenario would be to have an actual language exchange with a Dothraki warrior or a nobleman from Essos for Valyrian. High Valyrian is the language of the old Valyrian Freehold which was located on the eastern continent of Essos. Much of Essos was once dominated by the Valyrians for thousands of years, stretching from the Free Cities in the west, to Slaver's Bay in the east. The Valyrians forced the peoples they subjugated to speak in (or at least be able to converse in) their language. After the Doom of.

High Valyrian is a language originating from Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold. Corrupted dialects known as bastard Valyrian are spoken in the Free Cities(1) and Slaver's Bay.(2)

2High Valyrian
3Bastard Valyrian
History
Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)
High Valyrian is no longer widely spoken due to the Doom of Valyria,(5) and most Valyrian records were destroyed in the catastrophe.(6) The tongues of the Free Cities have continued to evolve from the original High Valyrian.(5)
Queen Alysanne Targaryen is said to have begun learning how to read from Valyrian scrolls while still at the breast of her mother, Queen Alyssa Velaryon.(7) Alysanne's husband, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, was fascinated with the Old Valyrian scrolls in the library of Dragonstone.(8)
How to lead jo owen ebook reader. Racallio Ryndoon is said to have spoken a dozen dialects of Valyrian.(9) Lord Alyn Velaryon studied Valyrian treaties about warship design and sea tactics when he visited the Citadel.(9)Larra Rogare, the wife of Prince Viserys Targaryen, was fluent in High Valyrian and the dialects of Lys, Myr, Tyrosh, and Volantis.(10)
Some highborn children of Westeros are still taught Valyrian as a sign of their noble education.(11)(12) Songs(13) and scrolls(14)(15) are still sung and read in High Valyrian, although by 300 AC most Westerosi nobles cannot understand the language.(13)
High Valyrian
Language
The High Valyrian phrase valar morghulis‎(16) is translated as 'all men must die.'(17) A counterpart phrase, valar dohaeris,(18) is translated as 'all men must serve.'(19)
The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)
The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)
Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)
Names
House Targaryen came from Valyria and thus most of its members can be considered to have High Valyrian names. These include:
Aegon
Aelor
Aelora
Aelyx
Aemon
Aemond
Aenar
Aenys

Houses Baratheon, Celtigar, Qoherys, and Velaryon are of Valyrian descent, and thus these names are possibly Valyrian as well.(34)(35)
Velaryon first names include:
Aethan
Corlys
Daenaera
Jacaerys
Laena
Laenor
Lucerys
Monterys
Vaemond
Valaena
Jaenara Belaerys was a Valyrian explorer(36) and Aurion was a would-be emperor.(37)
The Valyrians most likely gave Valyrian names to their dragons, as the dragons Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar, and Syrax were named after Valyrian gods and goddesses.(38)(39) However, not all dragons of House Targaryen had Valyrian names (e.g., Queen Alysanne Targaryen's dragon, Silverwing(31)).
Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:
Tumblr media
Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)
Bastard Valyrian
Free Cities
Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)
The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)
Slaver Cities
Valyrian Translations Season 4
The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)
Valyrian Voice Translator
Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)
Some slavers speak a mongrel tongue,(46) a blend of Old Ghiscari and High Valyrian.(47)

Quotes
Each of the Free Cities has its own history and character, and each has come to have its own tongue. These are all corruptions of the original, pure form of High Valyrian, dialects that drift further from their origin with each new century since the Doom befell the Freehold.(5)Download counter strike condition zero full.
Behind the Scenes
According to George R. R. Martin,
Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)
David J. Peterson further developed High Valyrian for the television adaptation Game of Thrones.

Note
I've seen several writers talk about Aenys breaking the contract by his extra-judicial killings and thereby losing his authority as justification for Roberts rebellion. But that doesn't seem to justify ousting Aenys's other children from succession? Especially considering that Robert's claim is somewhat based on his Targaryan heritage. Thoughts on this? Wasn't the exile and hunting of Viserys and Daenerys and killing of little Aegon and Rhaenyra clearly illegal?
First, Viserys and Daenerys weren’t hunted; that was an invention of Viserys’s mind. Robert explicitly mentions that Jon Arryn convinced him never to send anyone after either of the two of them. This is an idea that is simply wrong from a factual point of view.
Robert had listened to Jon Arryn and left them alone and after that, Viserys declared that he was marrying Daenerys off to a Dothraki warlord for the explicit purpose of installing himself at the rightful King of Westeros, pretty much a declaration of war and renewed hostility. This isn’t a perception matter, those are the course of events as they happened.
Simple blood succession isn’t the be-all and end-all of medieval succession. As Martin explains, “claims are people,” and feudalism is a politics of a person. There’s the claim that derives from the succession philosophy, and acclaim, the willingness of the vassals to serve the overlord and acknowledge their right to rule as king. While certainly not the same thing as the more modern concept of the consent of the governed, there are limits to the conduct of a king built into the system of feudalism, hence why it’s not absolute monarchy. Feudalism is a two-way street. You owe service, but are promised protection when you swear that oath. These oaths are continually repeated to stress the rights and protections of the monarch.
When Aerys violated the feudal contract so blatantly, it’s not enough to simply say: “Okay, next king down the line,” especially when the next king down the line, Rhaegar, is also violating the feudal contract. Contracts do not work when there is no faith that they get fulfilled, and House Targaryen had so transgressed the very foundations of the feudal contract in rapid succession that it was no longer a simple “whoopsie-doodle,” it was an assault on the very social constructs that formed their society, and that needed to be actively restored and protected against.
Then you have the fact that the rebels acclaimed Robert as their new king. They looked to Robert to protect them from the armies of House Targaryen, and for Robert to refuse them is to say that he won’t protect his people from the depredations of House Targaryen. Daughters could be kidnapped, sons and fathers executed for demanding an accounting, and the people looked to Robert to stop the Iron Throne from doing this. Much like Robb during the War of the Five Kings, refusing that meant turning his back on the people that he had led. This is also important, because the fact that Robert had Targaryen blood wasn’t the reason that he was the king, the acclaim of his vassals was. The Targaryen blood was one of the reasons they chose him (as was his popularity, his leadership, and the fact he was wronged by the crown), but it didn’t necessarily have to be because of that. The Targaryen blood happens to be a fig leaf fiction of continuity, but even those fig leaves are useful to protect against all against all. The monarchs of history knew this, hence why genealogy trees and ancestor lists were so important, why Henry Tudor took great pains to stress the Yorkist ties, and why a new English king or dynasty didn’t just abolish Parliament and say: “Doing it my way, new feudal contract lol.” Continuity gives an implication of stability, and governments need to preserve faith that their institutions and mechanisms won’t just up and vanish.
So….no, Robert had plenty of justification for removing the Targaryens from succession by virtue of the Targaryens invalidating the central concepts of their monarchy. As we see in the series, the right to Westeorsi kingship is not automatic. The right to rule is both claimed by the monarch and acclaimed by the vassal. This right to rule can be withdrawn in the event of tyranny, and when it’s withdrawn, it does not necessarily have to go to the next person down the line, especially if said person down the line can’t enforce the stability and proper behavior needed to restore the faith of the monarchy (this is why Aegon V exiled Bloodraven, to prove the validity and good faith of the Targaryen regime). Often, it can go to the person whom the vassals acclaim and who fights the violating monarch in the name of restoring those values. Hence, King Jaehaerys I, Aenys’s third son, ascends over Aerea or Rhalla daughters of Aenys’s first son, and why Robert is acclaimed over Aegon the Infant before the battle of the Trident, after Rhaegar declared that he would fight for the right for House Targaryen to continue acting as they had before.
Thanks for the question, Troken.

After one last look back at the Red Keep, Rhaena climbs on top of Dreamfyre and sets off to join her brother. In addition to her loyal support and Maegor’s claimed heir, she delivers the sword, Blackfyre, to Jaehaerys. Alongside the Queen, several of Maegor's own men abandon their service in the Kingsguard to swear their swords to Jaehaerys.
