Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard in Pygmalion (Anthony Asquith, Leslie Howard, 1938) Cast: Leslie Howard, Wendy Hiller, Wilfrid Lawson, Marie Lohr, Scott Sunderland, Jean Cadell, David Tree. Screenplay: George Bernard Shaw, W.P. Lipscomb, Cecil Lewis, Bbased on a play by Shaw. Cinematography: Harry Stradling Sr. Art direction: John Bryan. Film editing: David Lean. Music: Arthur Honegger The perfect antidote for those who think Rex Harrison is the only Henry Higgins, as well as for those, like me, who usually find Leslie Howard a bland and uninteresting actor. He's wonderful in this film, and he's beautifully matched by Wendy Hiller as Eliza. Unlike other Elizas one has seen, Hiller does the flower girl Eliza without coyness or the sense that she has been coached to speak cockney as thoroughly as Eliza is coached by Higgins to speak "proper." It does seem to me that the cockney dialect in the film has been smoothed out a bit more than necessary -- even more than in My Fair Lady (George Cukor, 1964) -- for the sake of American audiences. I'm also struck by the fact that the word "damn" remains so prominent in Pygmalion when it caused such a flap with the censors only a year later in Gone With the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939), and that the reference to the fact that Alfred Doolittle never married Eliza's mother wasn't removed. Did the Production Code administration not have to approve this import?

MISSY’S SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING IN AN ALL-NEW EPISODE OF ‘RIDE’ PREMIERING APRIL 30, ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
STUDIO CITY, CA – April 24, 2023 – Shaken by a strange encounter at the Frontier BBQ, Missy (Tiera Skovbye, “Riverdale”) wonders if she ever really knew the men in her life in “Your Cheatin’ Heart” this week’s all-new episode of “Ride” premiering Sunday, April 30 (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel. Nancy Travis (“Last Man Standing”), Skovbye, Beau Mirchoff ("Good Trouble”), Sara Garcia (“The Flash”), Jake Foy (“Designated Survivor”) and Tyler Jacob Moore (“Shameless”) star.
Isabel (Travis) and Mayor Hank (Greg Lawson, “Wynonna Earp”) are ready to secure funding for their new business venture. They turn to Gus (Moore) for help and get a glimpse of the wealthy family he is trying to distance himself from. As Tuff (Foy) contemplates his evolving relationship with Julian, (Vasilios Filippakis, “Hudson & Rex”), he asks for advice from Valeria (Garcia), who is dealing with a romantic quandary of her own. Missy’s encounter with a strangely familiar woman (Holly Deveaux, “12 Monkeys”) at the Frontier BBQ has left her with doubts about how well she knew her late husband. She tries to arrange a meeting in hopes of getting to the truth, but things do not go quite as planned. When Gus apologizes to Missy for coming to blows with Cash (Mirchoff), she realizes that Cash kept it from her. To get her mind off the McMurray men and their secrets, she approaches Valeria with an idea that could make life on the ranch better for both of them. But Missy’s happiness could be short-lived when she learns some distressing news that could change everything for the McMurrays.

Ah! The Metaluna Mutant! This beloved Universal Monster stands proudly alongside the classics such as Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, and even the Creature from the Black Lagoon, while the film in which it is featured is often overlooked as being included as a Universal Monster movie. Regardless, it’s time for the Grue Crew to revisit this cherished 50s Sci-Fi landmark entry, This Island Earth (1955).  In the film, Rex Reason and Faith Domergue unwillingly follow high-browed, white-hair-domed alien Jeff Morrow to his distant home planet where they finally, in the last few minutes, encounter the Metaluna Mutant face-to-face. Fun, sometimes goofy, always entertaining, the film delivers! During the episode, the Classic Era crew debunk a Hollywood myth about the film and uncover some key behind-the-scenes contributions from the film’s crew.
At the time of this writing, a stray copy of This Island Earth might be found streaming from Dailymotion or YouTube. The film is currently available on disc as a Blu-ray from Shout! Factory.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Jeff, is Isle of the Dead (1945), a Val Lewton RKO film with an Oscar-nominated director starring Boris Karloff! Beware the vorvolaka!

Song of The Week 148
Let’s take it back. I think it’s a cool Wednesday to groove to Cardinal Jim Rex Lawson. Yes, indeed it is. “So Ala Temen” by Cardinal Rex is our favourite song this week. Short, sweet, groovy highlife is the way. You can play on repeat for hours. Mhmmm. 🎶 Cardinal Jim Rex Lawson is one of the best-known highlife musicians in Nigeria’s highlife music history, amongst the likes of Chief Stephen…

3: Mary Afi Usuah // Ekpenyong Abasi
Tumblr media
Ekpenyong Abasi Mary Afi Usuah 1975, SESCULT My collection of African music is barely 20 records strong, so be mindful of the source, but I’d recommend Mary Afi Usuah’s Ekpenyong Abasi to anyone looking to delve a little beyond the usual entry points like Fela Kuti and William Onyeabor. Usuah was a rare talent as a singer, having studied and toured internationally with top European and American stars. She was rarer still as a woman of her generation who composed her own music. Ekpenyong Abasi’s eight originals, seven of them written by Usuah alongside top Nigerian bandleader Dan “Satch” Asuquo, are a virtual sampler of the popular styles of the day. If there’s a track you like, it can help to direct your search.
youtube
The gentle, tropical sway of “Ekpe”? Try the early work of Miriam Makeba.
The archetypal high life of “Afia Mma (Hulalah)” with its lilting guitar and ebullient horns? Victor Uwaifo or Rex Lawson’s classic bands are good next steps.
The svelte, percolating funk of “Ima Mma Uyem”? The Lijadu Sisters make for a great bet.
Ekpenyong Abasi seems to have been obscure (even at the time of its release) before it was reissued internationally in 2015 by archival label Voodoo Funk. That’s a shame, because it is a fully realized piece of work marked by fantastic musicianship and real compositional daring. I love the way “From Me to You” continuously morphs back and forth between stark, solemn lament and sweat-soaked jazz workout until the two modes fuse into one. Or “Mma Ama Mbo,” where a drum-driven traditional chant gradually builds to a cardiac boogie to close out the first side of the LP.
youtube
The record still seems to be in print as of 2023, but Voodoo Funk hasn’t issued any new releases since 2016, so it might be worth snagging a copy now if you’re on the fence. As the original liner notes on the back cover say, “Take it. Listen to it. You’ll like it.”

XOXO Blood Droplets - Yandere Headcanons
Everett Gray
* Everett is an aggressive yandere. The littliest thing can set him off. You looking at someone else? You talking to someone else? You trying to meet with someone else? He hates the fact that you aren't only paying attention to him and he is going to do absolutely everything in his power to have you. * If you would reject Everett, he would end up probably killing you. I mean, you are someone that he loves, but if you don't love him, then what is your purpose in life?
Nate Lawson
* Nate is a controlling yandere. Nate is a huge control freak. From the way you talk to the way you study to the things you do in your everyday life, Nate will control everything and will get violent with you if you dare reject him or his advances. * If you would reject Nate, he would end up hurting you very badly, without a second thought. To him, you are his, so the thought of you daring to reject him is an insane thought for him.
JB
* JB is a self indulgent yandere. Your existence is to please her. She is selfish and will do absolutely everything in her power to try and keep you to herself, while also putting you in harms way if that means that she will get what she wants at the end of the day. * JB would not believe that you are rejecting her. But if you would keep doing that, she would most likely end up hurting you just to try and get you to love her.
Officer Gercy
* Gercy is a manipulative yandere. She is the type that would want to always have you in her eye sight, making sure you are not doing something that would embarrass her or give people the idea that you are open to dating someone. * If you would reject Gercy, she would end up strangling you without a second thought. She will not allow you to slip away from her.
Bae Pyoun
* Bae is a manipulative yandere. He would do everything to make you think everything is alright, maybe even make you fall in love, before ending up doing something drastic to lock you away and always keep you with himself. * If you reject Bae, he would simply murder you. He adores you and would rather have you in a ghost form, than not have you at all.
Jeremy King
* Jeremy is a controlling yandere. Jeremy will try to have control over everything in your life. He adores you but he also hates the fact that you are around other people that he deems as dirty. If you keep being around them, he will start thinking you are dirty too. * If you dare to try and leave him, he will be so enraged that he will kill you. You seem to have already been dirtied. He can't save you anymore, it looks.
Lynn
* Lynn is a sadistic yandere. He might try not to hurt you but he uses for his own entertainment and often, he bullies you just so he would bully someone. You probably haven't even realized that he loves you because of how he treats you. Lynn hides his love for you very well. * Lynn wouldn't be shocked that you rejected him. You probably think he is teasing you and is about to make fun of you. Looks like he will need to isolate you so you can't help but love him.
Waldo Wilson
* Waldo is a bizarre yandere. He is your absolute best friend and has been the one to try and keep you from the freaks around you, but he never realized how much he fell in love with you as he would spend more and more time with you. You're one of the greatest people that he knows, and he doesn't want to let you leave his side. * If you would reject Waldo, he would return to acting like a friend, but now, he is more jealous and a ticking bomb before he snaps and does something horrible.
Rex Eld
* Rex is a bizarre yandere. Rex adores you but he gets in trouble over the stupidest things for you. He knows that you are someone who people love and he wants to love you so much that he is willing to kill someone for your affection and attention. * If you would reject Rex, he would probably get so sad and think that you like someone else. He would challenge that someone else for your love, most likely ending up the one who dies.
Chand Gerges
* Chand is a harmless yandere. Or well, he is very much in love and obsessed with you, but because he saw what you have to deal with the other maniacs that like you, Chand doesn't want to scare you away and become like them. He is willing to try and become better for you, while his dark thoughts are deep in his mind, waiting to break out and cause trouble. * If you would reject Chand, he would be absolutely heartbroken. That would be probably one of the possible reasons how or why his dark side would come to the surface.
