I was literally thinking this as I made dinner. I wish I had added it in as I wrote this.

Yeah, Battler is absolutely the definition of 'hot-blooded'. I guess it comes with the territory of being red-headed. But in all seriousness, this relates back to how shockingly innocent he is- he's a guy who openly wears his heart on his sleeve for all to see. But as we already know with Beatrice- innocence doesn't make it good.

While I could go on about how this affects him in a negative way, I think a recent small example I saw demonstrates this the best. In Episode 5, Battler openly disses and clashes with Berkanstel who, despite her actions and desires, is still nominally on his side simply because she acts in ways that hurt Beatrice. He tries to justify this by saying that he doesn't want to desecrate Natushi's own belief but his focus is on alleviating Beatrice's pain.

By all rights, he should not be doing this. And Berkanstel even calls him out on this- that he was all gutsy about returning to his sister and defeating Beatrice and yet here he is, basically acting like her caretaker. And how his indecisiveness born from letting his emotions guide him is basically just prolonging Beatrice's suffering. And this stubborn man is forced to accept that she's right, at least about how he shouldn't hesitate to end her.

Though in this case, it's very odd because Battler's emotions are also arguably his greatest strength. Every time he's broken, it's his emotions that revive his will to fight. It's why Beatrice's sadism basically ensured she'd be trapped in an endless battle against him- her actions would always enrage and thus revitialize him. Hence how her best shot was trying to appeal to those emotions. And how Ange ended up being a trump card- because her death would ensure that the loving brotherly love he had for her would motivate him so thoroughly.

Not to mention the implication of Ange's statement that magic is fueled by things like sadness, love, anger and happiness and how Battler's emotions seem to influence his abilities. Not to say that his emotions are good but rather that for every ounce of strength he gains from them, they inflict the same amount of pain.

 So…let’s talk about Battler Ushiromiya.

If I were to describe Battler in a word, ‘innocent’ is probably the best word. It’s not like the kind of innocence that Beatrice shows, manifesting as geniune joy in seeing the pain of others or in her conflict with Battler in the earlier episodes. Rather, Battler seems to be innocent in the way a child takes everything at face value and dislikes doubting others. 

Despite knowing he’s fighting a game of deception, Battler still approaches his fights early on as fair combat even though Beatrice shows as early as the second game’s first kills that she’s willing to play dirty. He tries to explain how the killer manages to do what they did rather than provide a theory and end it there because Battler is acting as though he is engaging in good faith debate rather than the game of doubt he’s actually playing. 

Not to mention that Battler is completely unwilling to throw his family members under the bus during the game, even though he wouldn’t be arguing their actual guilt nor would it affect them. He avoids arguing their guilt for two whole games, making things infinitely harder on himself even as just winning would free him and his family.

And this extends to the people he’s fighting against- he really should not be acting so chummy around Ronove who has nothing to gain from helping Battler. He trust Virgillia instantly to be his assistant despite knowing she was Beatrice’s mentor just because she says she’s opposing her. And he sides with and trusts Beatrice as she plays the part of the repentant witch, even though his whole conflict is about denying her for killing his family.

Now, Battler does grow out of one of his flaws. He’s more willing to use dirty, underhanded tactics against Beatrice in their final confrontation. Going as far as to argue that the crime scene in Episode 2′s first twilight was caused by small bombs in food, a patiently ridiculous argument that Battler knows is likely wrong but does so anyway to win. In a game such as this, this is an essential skill to have. But the other of his flaws, his desire to trust people at face value, is still in play. Despite all his talk of killing Beatrice and his rage at Ange’s death- he still listens to and is now fighting for her last wish to die and end her suffering. Even though by all rights- he won their game.

It’s just an interesting look into a man that is said to be so utterly determined to reach impossible levels of magic resistance acts so innocently.

The Sylvari are an excellent race to begin a fae court with. GW2 Customization is also really good on them. My friend once made four Sylvari based on every season. Rambling aside, I agree UNSEELIE OR BUST! Indeed it is harder to do in XIV...cause people just naturally gravitate towards Elezen because Tolkien made them like super connected to the forest. Which compared to the Sylvari...who are like plant people who are better suit for fae overtones. Uhh...I had a point then lost. In any case may Jak someone revitialize a fae court.

Keyword Tumblr Unit 6 (The Immobile Body): Securitization

I got this keyword/term from the Gonzalez reading (Tourism Mobilities, Indigenous Claims, and the Securitization of the Beach by Vernadette Vicuna Gonzalez). I think that it also applies well to the video “Walking While Black” by Vox, because, in order for society to be secure from poor people and black people, and more nuanced, poor black people, our ‘security forces’ must enforce absurd laws on this population to ensure streets look nice, and clean, and free from poor black people. I believe in this sense securitization and gentrification are simultaneous and interrelated concepts and processes done by the white supremacist settler-colonial racist state. This concept is important because it is one way how people become dispossessed from their land and from the mobility of their body, become oppressed, etc. 

My understanding of securitization is the act of acquiring and maintaining a space by a powerful force/group of people for their own interests. The Gonzalez article uses securitization in the context of securitizing beaches for tourist interests/tourism industry interests (from indigenous/local/native people). It can also be used in the context of gentrification, as I tried to outline above. Borders of all kinds are securitized--the mediterranean sea border, the mexico-US border, etc. etc. Someone is ‘made secure’ at the expense of other peoples immobility. 

Example: sex workers being arrested on Third Street in order to ‘clean up the neighborhood’ for future gentrification aka revitialization and development in that predominantly POC (black) and poor/lower class neighborhood. Securitizing certain streets and spaces for future (non-grassroots/local/community-owned) real estate developers and business owners.
