RETROZINE: A 70s-INSPIRED DIGITAL ART
“And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad. The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had.”  —Mad World, Tears for Fears
The idea for this art piece sparked when I revisited my numerous 70s and 80s hits playlists on the streaming service Spotify. I always had a soft spot for everything retro-themed as if I lived the decades myself. While I do have somewhat of an old soul in me, I still very much appreciate what we have today and how post-postmodern pop culture is now.
“Panzu” is a digital self-portrait that combines the art styles of the 70s with current meme culture humor. The picture I used was actually a selfie, which is one of the more recent trends in photography. I then took inspiration from the packaging for the UNO card 1970s as well as magazine covers from the 70s and the 80s.
The fake headlines on the magazine cover represent tidbits of my interests and favorites. I referenced another digital artwork I made, which was the Neon Genesis Evangelion parody. I also hinted about my hobbies which include journaling and memory keeping (looking at camera prices). The form of humor used involves self-deprecation, also called a self-roast by today’s generation.
Aesthetics-wise, I focused on using only a few fonts and a few colors while also maximizing their use. I stuck with system fonts such as Cooper Black which was similar to the font used in the UNO 1970s box. The color palette includes variants of the primary colors and a green to compliment the colors used on the header.
For the final touches, I decided to add a crease texture and grain effect on the final product to elevate the vintage look I was going for. Overall, I think it was an accurate representation of the part of my personality that loves art. It is humorous, self-aware and also very conscious of the art styles it is trying to replicate.

Going through my box of memories tonight and found my old friend Derek's exaggerated account of our legendary summer of 2002. We didn't know at the time but this is definitely a zine.

3/5/02 - Need Some Inspiration
I gotta fond some music that's gonna inspire me. Some movie that'll get me off my ass and doing something with my talents. A writer that opens my eyes like RetroZine used to. I'm at a lull right now. The things I listen to, read, watch, etc seem all prepackaged and stale. Where are the artists that keep it consistently fresh? That never fail to disappoint? That keep me begging for more? Maybe this is just a cry for myself to get motivated again. But I realized something. In order to truly express yourself, you need money. I need to get an instrument if I want to play something, for example. Blah, I'm spent. Fuck it.

August 2000: Now, after reading that RetroZine column
I DO feel better. He always gives me the whole picture. It's like, I'm looking at something with a little pen light, and he comes along with a giant fucking spotlight, so I can see just how insignificant (credible, but insignificant nonetheless) what I was looking at was. There is absolutely no shame in not liking (or liking) something someone else doesn't. The thing is, be honest about it. Don't try to hide your life and only show what they want to see and say what they want to hear. Honesty with open-mindedness is the only way to live. Otherwise, it's simply living a lie. Now, what DO I like? Well, I like punk because it's an alternative to big-business oriented and produced music. No, that's why I'm proud of liking punk. Bluegrass is an alternative to big business produced music, but I don't like that. I guess it's the variety of music within the scene that keeps me interested. I can't listen to one genre of music religiously. If punk was only NOFX and Rancid, I'd have been out of the scene a while ago. It presents a great diversity though, from the Weakerthans to the Bad Brains. From the Adjusters to Boy Sets Fire. That diversity speaks to me in a way words can't. And when I say punk, I mean everything from crust to emo to hardcore, to poppy-punk to ska/reggae, mod, soul, oi, grind--everything underground. So, as a form of entertainment, it does not disappoint. However, as a form of political epicenter and dramatically radical views, it does disappoint, in some regards. Now, bands with an introspective/political or even personal focus are my favorite to HEAR (not necessarily listen to--or is it vice versa). No, vice versa. My favorite to listen to, but not to hear. I love listening to what they have to say because every once in a while, I can connect with them and it makes me feel genuinely good. Bands with a good sound are the ones I like to HEAR. I don't necessarily agree, understand, or connect with the lyrics in any way, but the overall sound might be what I want to hear. So, I buy CDs for 2 reasons as a result of this way of thinking. Why is this important? Well, it's not, really. I just like to try to understand why I do things or why I say things. This whole thought process came as a result of the Warped Tour. While I did have fun, at some points, I felt like I didn't belong there. Because I know I think much differently than most people there, and I just couldn't bring myself to chant with them or sing along (most of the time) with them. I'm different. And it seemed completely unnatural to pretend to be part of the crowd. I might say RetroZine ruined the whole punk rock experience. But I won't. He couldn't have. He simply dropped a shit load of knowledge on me regarding the scene, and life in general. It's up to me whether I wanted to listen or shut it out and just go along blindly, and I chose to become enlightened. And I'm sure this way of thinking will help me in the future.

August 2000: Shit, politics and personal thoughts are in full force
My ezine's doing pretty well, especially after being advertised on Retrozine. I'm getting feedback and perhaps opening new minds, so that's great. Heidi and I are pretty comfortable. After giving her pics back, we had a good comfy talk. I love those. No nervousness, just enjoying each others company. "Fight Club" really opened me up to even more thought. Just that, it's MY life. I want to go to college to educate myself in what I have interest in, namely--political and social sciences. What I do with that is irrelevant. I'm NOT gonna become a wage slave. I cannot let that happen. Also, I want to join MOVE, ARA, Food Not Bombs, Habitat, or any other activist organization. This is far, far beyond proving how punk I can be. No, I want to fight to spread this knowledge and get others involved. Politics affects everyone. I want to make sure it works out the right way. Ok, I'm very tired and delirious. I'm gonna try to finish the Mumia book, then possibly start the other, but if I get too tired, I'll sleep.

December 1999: That retrozine site
means a hell of a lot to me. It opens up my mind to ideas that I’ve always thought of in the back of my mind, yet never questioned. It always takes someone else to get me into anything. Just thinking about all of my interests and things I enjoy in life. These are all from other people. I just wonder if everyone else is like that. Do people always think for themselves and like their own things? Or is it all based on influence and convincing others? With this open mind, though, I’m happier and easier to get along with. I’m pretty strict in my views, but I can talk with most people in the life I lead with an open mind. I’m just thinking of people at Shop Rite which shows just how many people there really are in this world. There’s just so many different personalities and each with their own values that it makes me feel like I’m on the outside for some reason. Everyone has their own backgrounds and sets of values, but I don’t seem to fit. I can fit easily, but I don’t think anyone really does. It all is in the head of these people. Just like a good buzz as described to me by Bill. If you think you’re not high, then you’re not. Which I guess in a way is parallel to: if you think you’re an outsider, you are. So, in turn, everyone is part yet everyone is separate. We all lead lives which most people can consider phony and “from pt. A to pt. B” but its how we live and we all look for the same things. So I’m beginning to think (I won’t use the term “realize”) that there’s not a certain way to live or act in any situation. There’s not just one door leading to the future. There’s a million ways to react. Can’t think “what would he/she do”. Judge—use common sense—justify—act. It’s that simple. And in awkward moments, laugh and try to talk and exchange ideas or learn from them, gain knowledge & share it. Get in deep conversations w/ people, let them have an open mind. Breathe. “I’ll try and do it”, no. That’s not what I’m thinking. It’s out of boredom & not wanting to work for Patricia. Where did that come from? I’ll tell you. Always the biggest problem stands out in my mind. What I HATE to think about and what I don’t want to think about. Right now, it’s James Br., work, Patricia, and a little Mary and what do I do with this family & her. Since that’s what’s on my mind, that’s what I write about. I feel different since I can’t feel like I’m not the one who’s wrong all the time. Sometimes, but I always feel at fault for things when I’m in trouble. When I think “maybe it’s my fault, how can I stand up for myself if I might be wrong?” I should think, it doesn’t feel right—and weigh both options. Why is my employer wrong to act phony to me then go talk behind my back? Why cant I hold a decent conversation with her knowing she thinks of me as a poor-man’s Eric and not a separate entity and personality altogether? She sees a different side when interacting with others of a closer age to me. It is because I’m courteous to her, yet semi-uninhibited with them that she thinks of me as phony. And that may be my fault! But I have to weigh my options again. Is it me to be rude to my boss, & possibly get fired? No. So from the beginning I was very passively nice and courteous to her while she expressed the same to me. So in a way we both did the same thing to each other. So why is it my fault? Why not hers? And can I—just like that—change my personality? No, not until hers is changed. I tend to sort of emulate who it is I’m with. And that’s why I feel uncomfortable when 2 different people I know are talking with me. Who do I emulate? Don’t emulate anyone, just be yourself. Oh, that would be easy IF I KNEW WHO I WAS! But I really haven’t quite figured it out. So I’ll go on and be me to the best of my ability and see where it gets me.
