May 12th
Good morning beauties 🥰
My sister brought her basil and apple mint home! It's been a very eventful 2-3 months growing them up from seed, and we've enjoyed a few harvests from them. They're all grown up now and hopefully will be unproblematic for her in their forever home.
With the extra space and my new bag of soil coming in, I finally got around to repotting my basil into bigger, separate pots, as well as transplant all four of my mints from the SG3 units into self-watering pots outdoors.
Spent two hours doing all that yesterday - got done an hour before sunset and hoped the lack of sunlight right after transplanting wouldn't shock the mints too much. Fortunately they are looking very happy this morning and are settling into their new environment well! I'll still keep a close eye on them for the next week, just in case. 🥰
My outdoor calendula pot sprouted a weed. PictureThis tells me it's creeping woodsorrel. I'm not gonna get rid of it - might repot it and keep it indoors as a houseplant. It looks pretty so yay free plant! 🥰✨
My little oasis indoors is now quite barren. 🥲 I decided not to click in new pods aside from the calendula a week ago. I'll be staying over at my sister's for a couple weeks later this month due to some scheduled renovation works, so I figure it'll be better to wait until I return next month to plant some new babies. (I've got my eye on painted nettle and polka dot plant~)
Besides, one of the plant cups developed a weird red stain and I don't understand how or why that happened. One of the wicks also had roots and weird black mold growing inside them that I couldn't pull out or wash off. So I tossed both. I'll get new ones next month when I'm back home.

"Agatha, Mirrak, Josephine- Zev did you name your sourdoughs?"
"You name your plants, I figured it was fitting. By the way, Larry is still wilting."
"Gods damnit Larry."
Housewife Zevlor definitely has multiple types of sourdough starters he tends to with diligence and a cutsey print apron with pockets.
Yes. He loves sourdough and also does a lot of food preservation. So he makes good pickles too!
In winter they're very well prepared because he thinks ahead. And he has an array of aprons for different purposes.
He's a good wife

a very autumnal gardening update || 11/08/2024
happy autumn everyone!!! here's a very very big gardening update as i've been hoarding photos to share since a couple days before halloween yippee!!
to begin, i've got progress photos of lots of different fall crops that i planted from seeds!
if you'd like to know what plant something is, read the image description for plant name and usually where i bought it from!
up above are pictures of my crops that have sprouted or long since sprouted and are now growing growing (i have a lot more that i'm not consistently taking photos of tbh). i'm really excited for everything to start being a lot bigger so the raised beds will look much more filled in.
i recently did a round of fertilizer water too! i make my own fertilizer and then add it to my watering can after straining out the big bits. my fertilizer water recipe is to put eggshells, used coffee grounds, used teabags, and banana peels to this big container i have and let it sit all in water for a couple days; then i strain it and put the water into my watering can and fill the watering can the rest of the way with regular water from my tap (i don't have a hose unfortunately and i live in a rental).
i also harvested a bunch of lil tomatillos recently, i wasn't expecting them to actually finish growing at this point, but somehow it was successful!
here's a bunch of photos from the greenhouse box too! most of the lil seedlings are doing really well, and i'm eager to get to transplant them soon (and those that don't get transplanted will go to friends as gifts or be given away on fb marketplace).
i'm also pleasantly surprised that my basil plant and coleus plant are doing well still in the greenhouse! after all, the greenhouse box isn't properly sealed and isn't fully insulated, it's mostly just a cold sun box. but somehow, they're doing pretty damn well, yay!!
i also repotted a few plants: my butterfly bush, my dieffenbachia, and one of my basil plants! my poor dieffenbachia was really going through it, so i figured he really needed a repotting. here's to hoping he starts recovering!
also... the table on my back deck finally gave out lmaoooo! i was repotted my butterfly bush on it and i was pushing down on the dirt in the pot onto the table and... perfectly pot-shaped hole was born! i have stuck an identical pot into the hole and i might seal up the drainage holes on it so i can collect a bit of rainwater?? maybe?? idk for sure yet to be honest, but i'll figure it out! :)
and that's all for this update!! i really hope you all enjoyed, it's been a bit tedious typing all of this out admittedly lol, so thank you for sticking around! lmk in the replies what you think and if you've got any ideas on what to do next! :)

31 Days of Productivity Reading もう一回!: Day 8
Before: After a week solid of reading nothing but manga, I am feeling like picking up a novel, but alas, the wheel chose another manga (we were one off from 地球星人!). Luckily everything on my tbr this month was handpicked by me and so I'm really excited to read them all! Today I'll be reading 気になってる人が男じゃなかった volume two. I have read a few of the earlier chapters on Twitter but I'm just so bad at reading things online, so most of this volume is completely new to me.
If I have the time and desire after reading this volume, I might pick up a novel to read. The smartest thing to do would be to start one of my Japanese books, but what might end up happening is I start A Psalm for the Wild-Built since I have it checked out from the library. I always like sending books back early if people have them on hold after me. Also, I'm not much of a sci-fi or fantasy reader, but the premise of this book reminds me just a bit of キノの旅 so of course I have to read it.
After: Today was mostly a day of little tasks around the house, so I didn’t start reading until late. I (finally) built an extra shelf for my English bookcase, repotted two basil plants, and watered the gardens. Even with my day full of tasks, I managed to finish this volume! I had read a lot more of it online than I expected (at least half I think) but it was still enjoyable to revisit and, as always, I can’t wait for the next volume. Also, it was kind of shocking going from reading so many volumes of BASARA to immediately reading series like 光が死んだ夏 and 気になってる人が男じゃなかった, both of which are published online. You can really tell the difference between series that were made to be read physically and those that are designed to be read on smaller screens like phones!
I read 158 pages of manga today to finish my seventh volume of the month!
#langblr#studyblr#benkyou posting#booklr#30 days of productivity#and next I have to reorganize my English bookcase#I’m excited though

What we once were. Part 1.
(Set after the Prisoner of Azkaban)
After Buckbeak landed deep in the forbidden forest, Sirius dismounted the magnificent creature, approached his hiding spot, and waited for Remus to appear. To take him home.
Remus told him via owl to wait in their hidden spot, a hidden cave tucked deep inside the forbidden forest. A place they had frequented then they initially began…whatever their relationship had been back then. A relationship full of secret touches, stolen kisses and midnight visits.
He waited anxiously for Remus to come, night turned to day, and then to night again. Just when he began to fear Remus would not come, there it was, the crack in the night air to announce Remus’ arrival through apparition. Their reunion was brief, Remus scanning his face searching for something, he must have found what he was looking for as he confidently stated “come on Pads, let’s take you somewhere safe.”
He tentatively took Sirius’ hand, and with a crack, both men stood outside a small cottage nestled in a rolling set of green hills. The smell of grass and something distinctly earthy rolled over the pair, the wind creating a sharp chill in the evening air and the sound of long blades of grass rustling due to the weather surrounded the men. Remus pulled his cloak tighter around himself and quickly glanced at Sirius, concern evident on his face due to the temperature and him being dressed in tattered prison robes.
Remus opened the door of the cottage and both stepped into a small hallway, immediately Remus flicked his wrist, using his wand to alight the candles in the hallway.
To the right of them, a small front sitting room in brown and red hues, the walls covered in bookcases. A small brown sofa along the far wall, with a maroon armchair to the left of the door. On the wall on the right, a small window with old brown curtains and a pinboard adorned with photographs.
To the left of the hallway a small staircase led upstairs, Remus hung his old cloak over the end of the stair banister.
Remus led Sirius to the end of the corridor, into the small yellow kitchen. White cupboards that needed a fresh lick of paint ran to the left and straight from the kitchen door. Plants littered the windowsill, upon closer inspection Sirius realised they must be used for cooking? Basil, Thyme, Mint and many others where the neat, handwritten labels had worn off through watering and repotting. A pair of pink scissors sat in a small metal pot at the end of the windowsill, he remembered buying them for Remus over a decade ago, he thinks?
“Tea?” Questioned Remus.
With alarm, Sirius turned to face Remus, surprised at the question that had pulled him out of his thoughts. Memories of happier times he had so carefully shoved deep down suddenly were at risk of bubbling to the surface.
“Of course, I haven’t changed that much Moons” Sirius retorted, anything to force a sense of normalcy between the two.
God he had missed his Moony. His beautiful, kind, compassionate and caring Moony.
Remus carefully set two steaming mugs of tea on two mats, on the blue wooden table in the centre of the kitchen. He waved his arm encouraging Sirius to sit next to him. Sirius’ stomach began to churn, he realised then that all he had eaten on the run were small mammals his animagus form had caught. And that was days ago.
“Small sips darling,” Remus murmured, his hand on Sirius’ right arm. Remus turned a deep shade of red as he pulled his arm back in embarrassment.
The warm liquid rolled across his tongue, heating him from the inside out. Sirius took this time surveying his Moony, although 12 years older, he was as beautiful as ever. A constellation of freckles across his face, warm reddish-brown curls across his head and silver scars across his face and neck disappearing below his collar. New lines, new freckles, new scars, new signs of ageing. But the same old Moony, his warm and comforting Moony.
“Pads, you need to eat. I have chicken soup or…”
“Soup sounds amazing Moons, Merlins beard I’d eat that plant on the windowsill if you’d let me!” Sirius moaned.
As the soup bubbled away on the hob, Remus swayed his hips listening to a slow, classical song on the muggle radio and rain that was pattering on the rattling windows. “Eat Pads,” Remus stated as he thrust a bowl of the steaming liquid in front of Sirius, before taking one for himself.
Once the soup had gone, and both men were fed and full Remus looked Sirius in the eye and sniffed. “Pads, you need a wash. The smell is repulsive!” Sirius rolled his eyes aghast, “Rem you have always found me irresistible don’t deny it” before shooting Remus a wink.
Remus took his hand, guided him up the wooden creaking stairs and guided him into the bathroom upstairs opposite the top step. “In” Remus stated before shooting him into the room and closing the door behind him.
Sirius turned on the shower, and stripped off his tattered, grotesque prison uniform. He shot himself a tentative glance in the mirror. Tattoos littering his body, matted black hair tumbling from his head and Merlin’s beard his physique. His arms thinner than ever before, his stomach concave inwards with ribs sticking out of the side. Collar bones pushing forcefully out of his skin and the muscle that once bulked his body out long wasted away.
Sirius stepped under the warm spray and watched years of grime disappear down the plug hole, the water ran black, then brown and finally, clear. The minty smell of his Moony’s body wash surrounded him as he scrubbed until his skin felt raw. Uncapping the pineapple scented shampoo, he massaged the foam into his scalp. Finally, he stepped out of the shower, wrapping himself in a navy fluffy towel revelling in the comfort of the fabric. Remus must have slipped the door ajar as he was washing, a neat set of flannel pyjamas lay just inside the door, under the pile was the large knit jumper Sirius used to wear on the cold winter evenings up in the dorm tower.
The clean, warm fabric clung to his body providing well-needed comfort. It almost made Sirius want to cry, bile filled his mouth and his heart began to race. Sirius wiped his eyes and took a deep breath deciding to search for something to wash his mouth out, he found a new blue toothbrush under the sink and used Remus’ toothpaste, the mint assaulted his tastebuds, revelling in the cleanliness Sirius washed his teeth again before placing the toothbrush next to Remus’ in the pot.
Finally, he pulled on a pair of blue fluffy socks that he must have missed when changing and, with a deep breath, went to open the bathroom door.

Sooooo recently I was seized by the ghost of cottage core future and I bought a basil plant from the grocery. I've looked up how to prune it, and I've determined that it needs water twice a day with how hot it gets on my balcony (sometimes around 120°F). I give it kisses and whisper to it how good it's doing. But I need to repot it and I have no idea what I'm doing. I am not a gardener. I have the brownest of thumbs. I have managed to kill both a rosemary plant AND a mint plant. Rosemary and mint!! I once killed a succulent!!! I cannot kill this plant, you have to understand. If I can't grow a plant what the fuck kind of witch am I?!? So I'm putting my whole herbussy into this damn basil but I still need help. What kind of soil is best? Do I need "plant food" for basil? How big should the pot be, and is draining best? Would the plant be better off inside than on the hot balcony? How often do I prune it? Do I only prune the top or do I remove browning leaves too? Someone, please. I need all the help I can get.
#help me please#basil#gardening#herbs#witchcraft#witch#witchblr#baby witch#please reblog this because i have a life depending on me and i need all the possible input

i was repotting basil earlier today and, as i was thinking to myself about the smell of dirt... well, this is a stretch of a headcanon (actually it's a headcanon on fanon, as we don't even know if regis canonically likes gardening, but it's just presumed that, he's got to get the herbs from somewhere, right?)
anyways, i wonder if regis has any particular relationship to plants, and gardening, and things with roots, or that are roots (like mandrake) owing to how he was buried in the ground for half a century. because, you know. when you plant a seed or a bulb, or plant propagated stems, you're also burying something in the dirt... in the darkness... to soon sprout in life anew...
#regis: so they buried me in the ground | angouleme: like a potato | regis: ...... like a potato.....#my biggest question continues to be if he came back from his bodyless head or his headless body. i have a headcanon but i'll never know#c: regis#the elbow-high diaries

This might come out a little bit late because my wrist is KILLING me but it's time for new garden update!!
I am, in fact, looking for advice for Spider Plant, African Violet, and random thing attached to my plants. This is a long post but if you are knowledgeable in any of those and would be willing to skip down to the section about those problems I would super appreciate it <3
First of all the spider plant is STILL flowering and making many new babies. I'm thinking about starting a plant section of my art business (which is usually inactive but I've been thinking of booting up again) so this is great news.
The two babies I propogated recently are doing well, for the most part. I didn't propogate them at the same time, so they are at different stages of progress. The first one went into a head-shaped pot with pebbles at the bottom for extra drainage and has found its home at the foot of my bed so that I can feel like I have some form of life in here besides Rookie sneaking in to take naps on my pillow or in my clean laundry when I'm not looking. The bedroom baby seems to have taken root, actually, judging by the fact that just now I pulled gently at it from the base and it didn't budge an inch from the soil, whereas when I first potted it it was looser than a 1900s social pariah (feminine). The leaves are also seeming to stand up straighter.
The second one however is just in a plastic container with no special drainage. The only reason I propogated it at all is because I was sitting watching My Hero Academia with my roommate and one of our friends when I looked Slightly to the right and had The Urge to Repot. I tried so hard to resist, I really did. I fought The Urge for at least 30 mins before finally, in the middle of an episode, i just stood up, went out on the balcony at 10.30 at night and propogated it without warning.
I'm pretty sure the only words I offered as explanation in the moment were "The plant was calling." I looked like a madman shoveling dirt into a cup in the middle of the night when previously I had shown zero indication that I would be leaving the couch until bedtime.
It's doing alright, the soil seems overly wet but that is probably because the plant is new enough that it hasn't yet developed the roots to drink up. I just need to give it time while I find a proper pot for it. I think I have one in my bedroom actually, I just need to paint it.
On the OTHER hand, the main spider plant is also turning brown at the ends which is kind of concerning. I don't know if it's the stem from the baby I just took off, drawing nutrients away (see blurry photo of long stem turning brown and dying) or if it's some kind of consequence of me accidentally overwatering her last week because I thought a water stake was a good idea (I'm never using water stakes again). If anyone has any insight on that, i would be thrilled to hear it. It's indoors so unless some nasty bug has gotten in, it's unlikely to be bug eating it.
One thing that I DO know bugs are eating is my BASIL!!!!!! I don't know if you guys are familiar with spotted lanternflies, but they're super invasive here in the US and in my state are actually considered "Under Quarantine" which means that affected counties/cities are kept track of and, if you live in one, you need a permit & training course on finding and eliminating spotted lanternflies before you can sell any kind of organic matter outside of the quarantine area. They eat grapevines like mad which is threatening to VA's economy (they're all big wine people)
Their main source of food is Tree of Heaven, which coincidentally is ALSO an invasive species from Asia. Including kudzu, bamboo and asian pear trees this is 4 plants and 1 HORRIBLE little bug that are wreaking havoc on Virginia's ecosystem because of being DELIBERATELY!!! introduced as an ornamental (Decorative!) plant. (bug hitched a ride) Unbelievable.
Anyway they also like to eat basil and I have my basil outside so that it can get a sufficient amount of sun to keep from wilting all the time, so guess what I find every time I go outside! This little PECKERHEAD (or his brothers) just hanging out on my basil sitting perfectly still just like I'm his dad and I just walked into the room and he's trying to pretend he wasn't just on his phone. Anyway today I went to get some leaves for cooking and like half of them were just absolutely emacerated with brown/black spots and holes because the lanternfly nymphs have been nibbling on them. Varmints.
Spotted lanternflies are vulnerable to neem oil (So are brown marmorated stinkbugs btw), tea tree oil, and peppermint oil. I mean to purchase whichever one is harmless to my other plants to spray the lanternflies with to kill them. They're also wildly attracted to milkweed, but it's actually toxic to them, so management strategies for spotted lanternflies often suggest planting milkweed on your property so that they will drink the sap and then die.
I intend to, once I am not struggling to pay bills, purchase a native milkweed plant and stick it allll the way on the end of the balcony AWAY from my other plants in order to draw the lanternflies away and hopefully kill them.
I'm not looking forward to cleaning up the bodies. In fact, a couple minutes before taking the above photo I actually leaned over to take a pic of another one and got a dead one in my hair. I was mortified when I sat up and realized. I'm really, really, really going to hate it when they start reaching maturity, because mature spotted lanternflies are HUGE. They're like 2 inches long, 1 inch wide, and fat-looking. I saw one smeared on the pavement last fall and wanted to throw up. I don't know if I have the strength to kill them myself, which is why I'm hoping neem oil spray and milkweed will kill them for me without having to deal with smashed moth remains,
Here are the life stages of spotted lanternfly, map of their invaded areas, and pictures of the Tree of Heaven for your information to kill/manage them <3
PEsTS aside, I have really good news! My wildflowers have all sprouted!!!!!!
Looking back, I wish I'd verified whether they were native or not. I hope I don't poison the landscape when they go to seed. Once they start flowering, I'll try to identify any invasive or harmful species and weed them out, I suppose.
They first started showing green on a day when i was feeling especially depressed about my recent breakup, so it was HUGE mood boost. It honestly felt like God was like "Yeah ya'll it's time to go green. Right now go go go go go!!"
Don't mind the plant water stakes, they're empty I just don't have a great place to put them right now. I intend to keep them only so I can use them when I go out of town for a few days at a time, so that I don't need to ask my roommates to water my basil daily, or whatever. The first two pictures I took when I first noticed the seedlings, and the third one is from today, along with most of the other photos.
One thing that I am concerned about is that I'm noticing these little banana-shaped things (pods? eggs? seeds?) that look like they've been clamped/clipped onto the leaves of many of the wildflower seedlings, especially the ones on the left end of the planter. They almost look like hairclips that have been shut onto the leaves? I'm really confused. They're pretty dry looking, and my friend James broke one apart and it just kinda disintegrated. (I was too wigged out to touch it) They can't have been there very long, a couple days before I noticed at least.
If anyone has ANY idea what these are, I'd really appreciate it. I'm worried that they're bug eggs. I really hate interacting with/looking at bugs, especially bug eggs, so I tried looking it up myself and had to stop because uhh... pictures of bug eggs. But they definitely don't look like part of the plant, especially since this planter is a mixture of different species and they're showing up on multiple types.
The beeblossom, which I've learned is also called a Whirling Butterflies or a Wand Flower much more commonly than it's called a beeblossom, is doing quite well! The leaves and stems have shifted completely from red to green, and it's showing signs that it might possibly flower for a second time. I really hope it does, the flowers last time only lasted a couple days and I don't remember if I got any good pictures but they were really pretty. I've repotted it into a neat woven-basket pot that I got at the local garden center (This garden center has a cat mascot! That lives at the store! I love him. He let me pet him.)
The lavender also went into a similar pot, to get it out of the rice pot that it was in before. Also at this garden center I found a catnip plant!!!! Rookie has been loving it whenever I give him a leaf, but surprisingly I don't think he's figured out the source plant because he doesn't go up to it and sniff it at all. I think he's more interested by the finches, cardinals, and robins that have (finally) found our birdfeeder. To give you an idea of how much the birds have been vibing, this feeder was full to the top only a week ago.
The Echinopsis babies are doing OK. Echinopsis generally do a terrible job of communicating how they are doing. They don't seem to be especially active in growing? Neither the babies nor the parent. I suspect know I repotted the parent into too-small of a pot, so I hope to remedy that at the next opportunity. Just.... large pots take up so much space!!! And they're much more expensive than small pots, especially since I'm so averse to plastic containers due to issues with overwatering plants in plastic containers.
The Echinopsis babies haven't been drinking as much as I'd like, but they HAVE been drinking, which is a sign that the roots are functioning just fine. They were each able to take a root or two from the parent when I propogated them about a month ago, so it's good to know that they're doing alright down under the soil. I'm thinking about selling each of them for $35, with the hand-painted pot, but I hate to part with them. I get so emotionally attached.
The Thyme, on the other hand, has shown ZERO signs of growth and it's been 12 days. I know they have a long germination time but between their complete silence and the fact that I planted them in the wrong soil (I should have used sandy loam but it's just Miracle Gro) and the soil has been wetter than a jellyfish since I planted, AND they're just from a dollar tree Herb Rocket, I'm starting to become suspicious that they're duds. I'll keep watering and watching them until after I hit the 28 days, but I'm definitely not feeling great about the thyme.
The herb rocket was supposed to be planted as just one roll, also, but because I was using a long container I took some scissors and just cut the rolled up seed tape in half lengthwise before rerolling and planting. The directions were also ambiguous as to whether I was supposed to leave the top of the rolls visible, level with the soil, or to cover them up with the 1/4 inch soil that I've begun to notice is typical of planting instructions.
The left roll you can see is a little bit messed up, because the other day in a fit of disappointment I pulled it out of the dirt and unrolled it to check for anything, ANYTHING, ANY!!! SIGNS OF GROWTH! I found nothing. But that, not before, is the point when I googled the germination time of thyme, then I felt like an idiot and did my best to stuff it back into the soaking wet soil.
God help me with this plant.
My roommate pulled out a little mushroom decoration (she loves mushrooms) for the garden, initially intended to go in the wildflower planter. It was there for about an hour before I took it out, because I didn't want it to kill any of the wildflower growth. Instead I put it between the two thyme rockets. Hopefully, when (if?) the thyme actually starts growing, it will look like there's a little mushroom home nestled between the two shrubs.
Another plant whose performance I am currently dissatisfied with is the African Violet. It's wilting again. At this point it's like, "What am I doing wrong now?" What makes it even worse is that this is the only plant that was given to me as like a, "nurture this plant as a metaphor for nurturing your spirit!" so it's even more depressing that I'm having difficulty keeping it alive. I feel like this plant's survival is tied to my success as a human being (Not really, but that's the vibe).
The leaves are just totally limp. Not really mushy, but I could see them getting that way if it weren't for the fact that they usually just dry up and wither away first. The soil is very wet, which I don't understand because I've been doing my best not to overwater it and it's been a week since it's last douse. The leaves have lost their yellow tinge from overwatering, but only on the topside. The bottomside of the leaves still look brownish, as if they're dried up (except that they arent) If there are any African Violet experts in the crowd, I would LOVE for you to lend me any advice you can give me from the picture <3 I love you.
I've been pruning off dead sections and kept it indoors with a stable temperature in a spot where it gets plenty of indirect light, so I don't understand what the issue is. I'm beginning to blame plastic containers for all of my problems due to all of my Problem Plants being in plastic. (Spider Plant momma, new baby Spider Plant, African Violet, Thyme, Basil in the early months, Beeblossom, probably the catnip soon too).
I desperately want to move all my plastic planted plants to ceramic/terracotta or woven containers, but the issue is just that plastic is the cheapest material for planters, and since I've been upsizing, I genuinely do not have the budget for terracotta right now. Maybe in 2 months, but by then the Basil & Echinopsis will already have had their growth stifled, the Thyme will be drowned, and the African Violet will be well and truly dead.
I wasn't able to get any good pictures of the snake plants in this lighting, but they are doing alright also. Their roots haven't quite put down in the new soil, but I think they're kind of growing anyways??? I dunno.
Finally, here is a photo of the Potted Plant Empire as it is today, excepting the indoor plants and the wildflower planter being cut off:
That little pot at the end is my roommate's rosemary, and the orange glass pot is her lavender. Mine is in the woven basket next to it.
I feel like that guy in the recent Drive Time app advertisement. "I FEEL STRONGG!!!"
