Matty lied, which was probably a mistake since he was a shit liar on a good day, and today wasn’t a good day. He was much better at just, not saying anything, even though his therapist had told him that was really just lying by omission. He couldn’t meet Jamie’s eyes, and knew he was sweating nervously. He was hyper aware that he could feel the wand in his back pocket.
.
Just like in the bathroom after the show, two parallel lines stared back at him, confirming deep down what he already knew. The test was positive.

you'll be alright (no one can hurt you now) chapter four
✰ 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: Lucy Chen & Tamara Colins, Tim Bradford & Lucy Chen, background Tim Bradford x Lucy Chen
✰ 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: Lucy goes on her first date since taking in Tamara. Tim nearly loses his mind when she doesn’t show up for her first scheduled shift back on time.
✰ 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: canon divergence, (eventually) autistic!Tamara, Tim Bradford would do anything for Lucy Chen, Lucy is a hardcore swiftie, Day Of Death (im so sorry) near death experience, kidnapping, hospitals, being buried alive, Caleb Wright, mentions of Rosalind Dyer, yknow the usual DOD warnings,
don’t forget to read and reblog, and i do not give permission for my works to be posted anywhere other than tumblr. thank you.
A/n: im so sorry for this I hate this episode so much, but it is important to Lucy’s character development and who she is as a person and a cop and I don’t want to change that so we’re going to have to suffer through DOD together. I won’t be going into detail about Lucy’s POV, so I will be doing the majority of this chapter from Tim’s perspective. There’s a bit of a time jump (4 weeks) but not much has changed in Lucy and Tamara’s world.
Tumblr media
Tim yawned as he adjusted his badge as he walked out of the locker room. He glanced at Nolan and West standing by the door to Grey’s office, talking to him with concerned looks on their faces. Tim thought it was weird, but then he remembered that Lucy was coming back to work today, and he promptly forgot. He made his way to the break room and poured himself a black coffee into his travel mug, before leaving and heading into the break room.
As he made his way down, he thought about Lucy and how excited he was for her to be back. The last5 4 weeks without her had been filled with nothing but silence and boredom. While Tim would never verbally admit it, he had missed Lucy. He missed her voice, how she ranted about things happening in her personal life, or about drama (or ‘tea’ as she called it) that was happening around the station. He missed the scent of her chai tea latte filling up the shop, he missed paying for that extra meal on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, his days to pay. He missed her immensely, more than he thought he would, and he was very glad that she was back.
Before he could open the door and wait for her, however, he was summoned into Grey’s office. He wrinkled his eyebrows and followed Grey into his office. He grew even more confused when he walked in, and saw Nolan and West sitting there, both looking uneasy and scared.
“Whats going on, sir?” Tim asked.
Grey looked at Nolan, who swallowed, and then spoke. “Lucy did not come home last night. She is not responding to texts or calls.”
“Where did she go?” Tim asked, and Jackson spoke up next.
“She went on a date. She was supposed to come to my apartment,” Jackson said, before side glancing at both Grey and Nolan. “She was going to spend the night with me and then we were going to come to work together, as I live closer. But when I woke up, she wasn’t there. Neither was her car, and I have been trying since 7:30 am to get a hold of her.”
Fear swirled in the bottom of Tim’s stomach. “Who did she go on a date with?”
“C-Caleb Wright.” Nolan said. “With a ‘W’.”
Tim nodded. “Okay.” He said, pondering possibilities in his head briefly. “Is it possible that she’s just running behind and her phone is dead?”
“Well, we thought of that but-“ Jackson said, but John cut him off.
“If she’s just running late and we ring the fire alarm, she’ll get dinged, but-“
“If we don’t, and something terrible happens…” Tim interjected, thoughts trailing off. He shook his head to clear his thoughts, his attention turning to Grey.  “What do we do?”
“Well, what do we know about this Caleb guy?”
“Nothing.” Jackson said, shaking his head. “No, he uh-, he said that he worked for a medical supply company. Lucy showed me a video of him playing with a puppy.”
Grey nodded. “Okay. Bradford, take West and run a background check. I want to know everything you can find on Caleb before we knock on his door.” He said. “And find Armstrong.”
Tim nodded. “Right. Come on,” He said, motioning for West to follow him.
He heard Grey talking to Nolan about having him and Nyla run a trace on Lucy’s phone, in order to get her into the MUPS and NaMos systems that the LAPD used.
As Tim and Jackson made it to Armstrongs office, where the detective was just settling in for the day, Grey walked out of his office, and called for everyones attention.
“Everyone listen up,” He said, and the room fell silent. “Officer Lucy Chen has not been seen for approximately 13 hours. Given the circumstance, we cannot rule out abduction,” He said, and Tim breathed deeply, trying to control the nausea that he was feeling.
His rookie was potentially missing. The person he was responsible for training, and for keeping safe while out on the streets. The person that was, even now, the best rookie he had ever trained, and ever will train. His Lucy could be missing, and he didn’t know what to do other than to focus, and do whatever Grey told him to do in order to find her.
“So stop whatever you’re doing.” Grey continued. “I want everyone on this until she’s located.” He said, before turning to an officer. “Notify S.O., see if they can shag calls for service.
Tim turned his focus to the computer that Armstrong was using as Nyla walked up to Grey. He overheard her say that the GPS on her phone was disabled, and he began to hyper focus on the words on the screen. He was no help to anyone, much less Lucy, if he was panicking. He had to remain calm, and get the background check like Grey had ordered him to.
“Caleb Wright doesn’t seem to exist.” Armstrong said, concern evident on his face.
Tim’s anxiety grew. What was going on? Tim shook his head and walked around the desk to look at the computer screen.
“That’s impossible,” He said. “I saw his social media page.”
“Well, it’s gone now, so he must have erased it.” Armstrong said. “But if he is our guy, then he’s already faked one identity.”
“Bryan Coleman,” West chimed in.
Armstrong nodded. “Exactly.” He agreed, pointing at Jackson. “He stole his life to gain access to the old zoo. Used it’s isolation to kill his victims,”
Tim nodded, understanding where Armstrong was leading. “But with that place burned, he’s gonna need new killing ground.” The though of Lucy being his next victim made his stomach churn, and his heart thud painfully in his chest. He couldn’t lose her. She had changed him so much already in their short time together, and he wasn’t ready for her 13 months with him to be up, much less to never see her again because she was murdered. He had to save her, but it angered him that he didn’t know how. He didn’t know the true identity of who took her, where she is, the state that she’s in, or if she’s even still alive. And that thought killed him.
Armstrong nodded at Tim. “My guess is that he already has one, and thats where Lucy is right now.” Armstrong picked up the phone, and Tim nodded at West, motioning to the door.
“Lets go.” He said, and Jackson lead them out of his office and towards the stairs.
“If we don’t find her-“ Jackson started, but Tim stopped, and turned to look at him.
“Don’t.” He said, cutting him off. “Don’t go there. If she was taken by him, the only way that you are good to her is if you are focused solely on saving her, not playing worst-case scenarios.”
Jackson nodded, gulping. “Right.” He said. “Sorry. I’m just worried.” Tim nodded.
“I know. I am too.” He admitted, and almost laughed at the shock evident on the rookie’s face. “But, we need to focus on her. This is not about us and how we’re feeling. This is about finding her, and saving her before it’s too late.”
Jackson nodded. “Okay. You’re right. What do we do now?” He asked, and they continued their journey down to the main floor.
“We go and tell Grey what we know, and wait for further instructions.”
“Okay. Is it okay if I just run to the bathroom quick?” Jackson asked, and Tim nodded. He could tell that Jackson was starting to panic, and needed a moment alone to collect himself.
“‘Course.” He said. “Meet me in his office when you’re done.” Jackson nodded, and Tim watched him walk towards the bathroom. Tim was about to turn to walk to Grey’s office, when he saw Jackson pull his phone out and make a call. He stopped, watched him for a moment, but decided not to eavesdrop on his call. If it was important to finding Lucy, he knew West would fill him in. If it wasn’t, it was personal, and Tim could honestly care less.
He walked into Greys office, and Grey immediately stopped what he was doing to look up at him. “What did you find out about Caleb?”
Tim shook his head, his hands on his hips. “He doesn’t exist. It seems to be an alias. And we figure that if he’s already faked one identity,” He said, and paused when the door opened. Jackson walked in and Tim looked at him, silently asking if he was good. Jackson nodded, and Tim continued speaking. “If he’s faked one identity already, then it has to be Bryan Coleman.”
Jackson picked up where Tim left off. “We speculate that he used his identity to gain access to the old zoo, and used to the isolation to his benefit to kill his victims, but since we’ve found that spot already, he has to find somewhere new.”
“And that’s where Lucy is.” Grey finished, his head nodded. “Alright. Nolan and Harper are on their way back to the hospital after talking to the victim we saved yesterday. Go take 5, and we’ll reconvene in the briefing room when they’re back.”
“Yes, sir.” Tim and Jackson said at the same time. They left the office, and Jackson headed left, towards the front door, presumably to wait for Nolan. Tim however, went and sat in the briefing room.
He didn’t want to take 5. He wanted to be on the streets, knocking on doors, finding out where Lucy was. He wanted to find her and bring her home. He wanted to find her, and make sure that she knew that no matter how tough he was with her; no matter how many Tim Tests he puts her through, he cared about her, and he wanted nothing more than for her to be safe. She needed to be home. She needed to be at the station with him, not being held somewhere unknown by a serial killer’s protege.
He blinked back tears in surprise as his foot tapped against the floor, watching the minutes slowly tick down. Why was he crying? Tim Bradford rarely cried, not because he didn’t find things sad, but because he didn’t allow himself to.  The last time he fully allowed himself to break down in tears was the drive home from serving Isabel with divorce papers. He couldn’t let himself cry over Lucy, especially now. If he did, it would mean revealing his weakness, and he wasn’t ready for that yet. He wasnt ready for the looks, the whispers, the questions. The higher ups asking his nature of his relationship with Lucy. He couldn’t do that. Not to himself, and especially not to Lucy, who wasn’t even a P2 yet. So, he swallowed the lump in his throat, and sniffed, blinking away the tears.
He had barely blinked away the last tear when Armstrong came into the room, and walked up to the whiteboard that had all of the important facts about Lucy and her disappearance.
“The bartender at Las Torres recognized Lucy and Caleb.” He said, and Tim sat up straighter, hope beginning to build in his chest. “The good news-“ he continued. “Theres a security camera in the parking lot, so we know that they left at 9:05. The bad news?” Armstrong clicked on the monitor in the room to reveal the footage of Caleb leading Lucy out of the bar by her upper arm. “The camera angles too steep to recognize faces.”
Tim sighed, shaking his head. All he wanted, all anyone in this room wanted was to find Lucy, but it seemed that at every turn so far, the universe was working against them. And Tim hated it with a passion. Tim let a breath out from his nose, attempting to calm the burning fury in his body. There wasn’t a lot that made Tim angry enough to feel the need to fight God, but someone he lo- no, cared about, being in any sort of pain was certainly enough.
“Two minutes later,” Armstrong resumed speaking. “This car drove by.” Tim watched as a grey car drove through the frame, and Tim sighed, knowing that Lucy was most likely inside of it.
“The licence plate on Caleb’s car was reported stolen earlier that day,” Grey said, looking between the room and the images on the monitor. “Officer Chen’s care was found in the alley where she left it last night. Which means, we believe that Caleb is Rosalind’s protege, and he took Officer Chen.”
Tim sighed in disappointment. He knew that what they were saying was the truth, but that didn’t make it hurt any less. Tim picked up the rapid breathing of his heart, and the anxiety fluttering in his stomach, a silent threat of the possible reappearance of his breakfast. But, before he could spiral fully, Grey caught his attention again.
“I know how upsetting this is, but we have to remain focused. She’s counting on us.” Tim heard Grey ask if there were any questions, but Tim didn’t stick around to find out. He walked out of the room, pulling his phone out as he walked.
He dialled Angela’s number, and breathed, knowing his best friend would be able to sense the shakiness of his voice no matter how hard he tried to hide it.
“What’s up?” She answered casually.
“Hey. Lucy’s been taken. I need you.” He said simply, and waited for her response. The line was silent for a moment before Angela spoke again.
“On my way.” Tim hung up the phone and stuffed it back into his pocket, walking back into the briefing room.
When he re-entered, Nolan was up at the front, relaying the information that he and Harper had gotten from the other victim at the hospital.
“Nora was abducted two nights ago.” He said. “We found her 18 hours later, already tattooed, and about to be put in a barrel to be suffocated. This makes Caleb’s timeline from abduction to death approximately 24 hours.” Tim’s hands shook listened.
“Which means we have less than 10 hours to find Lucy.” Jackson said, his face portraying everything Tim was feeling.
“Unless we’re wrong, and she’s dead already.” Armstrong stated casually, and Tim dug his nails into the palm of his hands to prevent himself from punching Armstrong for even thinking to suggest such a stupid idea. No, she was alive, but they needed to find her before she wasn’t anymore.
“No,” Harper interjected. “Look, I know I haven’t known Lucy as long as the rest of you, but I do know she is a fighter.” She said, glancing back at Tim briefly. “She’s gonna do everything she can to stay alive until we save her.” Tim nodded in agreement, watching as people filed out of the room, but Tim remained rooted to his spot, staring at her picture on the whiteboard.
He needed her safe. He needed her by his side, where he knew she was alive, and okay. He didn’t know how he was going to get through these next few hours, but he knew that he had to do it so that his rookie, his Lucy, would be safe.
He suddenly found himself sitting down next to Jackson, answering calls, when Angela walked into the station, Wesley trailing behind her.
“Hey,” he said, standing up to greet her. “Thanks for coming in.”
“Of course,” She said, looking to the side of her, and seeing the phones that him and Jackson, and two other officers were manning. “Grey’s got you on tip lines?”
Tim nodded. “Nothing says we got squat like listening to the public.” He looked up at Wesley. “Day off?”
Wesley nodded, not making eye contact with Tim. “Yeah, something like that.” Tim looked at him suspiciously, but let it go. “Can I help?”
Tim crossed his arms. “Whats your tolerance for cranks and asshats wasting your time?”
Wesley shrugged. “I’m a public defender.”
Tim nodded his head to the phones. “Have at it.”
“This is useless,” Tim said, turning to Angela as Jackson spoke to Wesley. “We should be on the streets kicking down doors.”
“Who’s doors?” Angela asked, a concerned look on her face.
“I don’t know,” He answered honestly. “But I-I can’t just sit here.” He stormed away, desperate to do something, anything, to bring Lucy home.
Of course, Angela being Angela, followed after him. “Wait up!”
Tim rolled his eyes. “I’m fine, just blowing off steam.”
“I get it,” Angela said, following after him. “But you got to get your head in the game.”
Frustrated, Tim turned around to face her. “I don’t need a pep talk.”
“Then why’d you call me?” She demanded. “Clearly, you need to get something off of your chest.”
Tim sighed. “This is my fault.” He answered, looking down at his shoes.
“What?” Angela asked. “How?”
“The day I came back from my leave, I went to her apartment after shift. No one would tell me anything about why she was off. I questioned her, but she wouldn’t tell me. Something was going on, and I should have pressed her more. I should have been there for her, I’m her training officer for gods sake. I should have known something was wrong.”
Angela took a step closer. “Tim, she didn’t tell anyone. All we know about her leave is what Jackson and John have been permitted to tell us. Something happened, and she needed time off to deal with it. That doesn’t make you a bad training officer. You did all you could.” She explained.
“I could have done more.” Tim stated, before turning to walk away.
“What is it about her?” Angela asked, making Tim stop in his tracks.
“What?” He asked, turning around, confusion all over his face.
“Look, I’ve known you since before you became a TO. You’re hard on your rookies, but you’re also fiercely protective over them. But with Lucy, you are more over protective than you have with any other rookie. You’ve honestly been quite lenient on her so far. So, what is it about Lucy that makes you feel like you should have prevented this? That you should have protected her better, or been there for her more? You’ve always said that you’re their training officer, not their friend. What is it about Lucy that changed that for you?”
Tim shook his head, before looking up at Angela. She’d been his best friend for years. He could never hide anything from her, even if he wanted to. He knew that she would instantly see through whatever bullshit answer he would give her, so he decided to be truthful. As much as he could be with himself, anyways.
“She turned around and smiled at me.” He said, his voice quiet and shaky. A crease formed on Angela’s forehead, showing her confusion. “Her first day, when Grey said she was paired with me, she turned around, and smiled at me. I don’t know what it was, but she’s got this grip on me, and I don’t know why. I don’t know how to not care about her this much.” He said, a stray tear, falling from his eye as he spoke.
“Tim…” Angela said quietly. “Tim, I think you know why.” Tim shook his head immediately, knowing what she was getting at.
“No,” he responded. “Thats not it. She’s my rookie, I would never cross that line.”
Angela smiled sadly. “I know you wouldn’t. That doesn’t mean your heart doesn’t still want her.”
Tim shook his head, trying to protest, but his face betrayed him, crumpling as he fought to stop the sob clawing its way out of his throat. Angela didn’t say anything, just pulled him into her arms, and held him as he cried.
“We’re going to find her,” She said eventually. “Whatever it takes.”
—-
An hour later, and Tim had calmed down. His sadness and anxiety was now replaced by anger. Anger that was stronger than before, and made him want to burn the world to ashes just to find her. And that’s exactly what he was going to do.
“Problem officer?”
Tim wasted no time in reaching through the open window, grabbing a fistful of the Benjamins hair, and slamming his face onto the steering wheel.
“You listen to me very carefully,” He spat. “Your name is Benjamin Lassie. You’re a mid level idiot who controls every illicit item that enters the Central California Women’s Facility. And today is your day of reckoning.” He squeezed tighter. “Now, I am responsible for a life that is in jeopardy, and I will do whatever I have to to save her. Do you understand?” He demanded.
“Theres a man who gives you items to smuggle onto death row for Rosalind Dyer. You are gonna give me that man.” He continued.
“Why would I do that?” Benjamin demanded.
Tim squeezed even tighter. “Because if you don’t, I will pull you inside out.” He threatened, and he then watched with a sickening satisfaction as Benjamin saw his life flash before his eyes, and spit out the name; Jerry Havel.
Tim smiled, released Benjamin, and sent him off with a threatening look that told him Tim would follow through with his threats if he said a word about what just happened to anyone.
Jackson then shakily followed him back to the shop, and as soon as he shut the door, Tim was speeding back to the station while Jackson typed his name into the computer to do a background check.
“Any information you get, you text it immediately to Lopez.” Tim said in a calm tone, feeling bad for scaring him.
“Yes, sir.”
—-
30 minutes later, Tim had managed to get a S.W.A.T. team and a no knock warrant together, ready to raid Jerry Havel’s place. Tim followed behind S.W.A.T. as they moved in on Havel’s place.
They paused briefly at the door, before busting it open, and running inside. “Go, go, go!” One of the S.W.A.T. member said as Jerry began to run. Another officer shot him in the right shoulder, and he fell to the ground on his face.
Tim ran up to him, Jackson following behind. He grabbed him, and turned him over. “Where’s Lucy?” His heart dropped into his stomach when he realized that the man he was faced with was not Caleb. “That’s not - that’s not Caleb.” He said, moving away from the man in front of him. “Damn it!” he yelled in frustration.
He tried to control his breathing as Jackson took over, yelling at the man about his name, and where he worked. Tim looked back at Jerry, who told them through stuttering that his name was in face Jerry Havel, but he had never worked at that prison, and had been on disability for the last five years after an inmate shivved him during a riot.
“Look, DOC clearly states that you work at that prison.” Jackson said.
Jerry sighed and looked down. “My identity was stolen.” He said. “Right around 3 years ago. Really screwed up my credit.”
Tim nodded, making the connections in his head. “Caleb used Jerry’s identity to get into prison, get close to Rosalind.”
“Just like he stole Bryan Coleman’s identity.” Jackson finished as he holstered his gun.
“Is this connected to the officer that was abducted?” Jerry asked.
Tim nodded. “Yeah.” He said, tears welling up in his eyes as he spoke. “And you were our last shot at saving her.”
Tim moved on auto pilot for the next hour. So much so, that he didn’t remember anything between leaving Jerry’s house, and arriving back at the station.  Once he arrived there, he was handing over a file that had a record of the credit card charges on the card that Caleb had used under Jerry’s name that Jackson had found.
“Hey, hey,” He said, getting Angela’s. Grey’s, and Wesleys attention. “We got something.” He said, dropping the file on the table. “Caleb used Jerry’s identity to rent a post office box in Kern County, near the prison. But, he kept it up after he quit.” He explained, as Angela opened the file, and began pouring through the contents. “Still pays for it. He must have a place close by.”
Angela grabbed a piece of paper, and read from it, comparing what was in the file with her own notes. “Rosalind’s family - her trust owns a farm in Kern County.” She handed him the paper that showed evidence of the farm.
Before he knew it, he was in the stations helicopter, racing to Kern county with Angela, Grey, Jackson, with Nyla and John on the ground in a shop.
When they landed on the farm in Kern County, Nolan told them that Caleb was dead, and that Lucy was buried somewhere on the property. Tim felt a sick sense of happiness knowing that Caleb was dead. He was gone, and now he could never touch a single hair on her head again. She was one step closer to being safe, and now all they had to do was dig her up before it was too late.
Nolan thrust a phone into Angela’s hands. Angela looked down, watching the video of Lucy inside the barrel. “I can’t even tell if she’s still breathing,” She said anxiously, looking up at Grey.
“Spread out.” Grey commanded. Tim looked around, trying to find a good place to start looking. “Airship, we have an officer buried alive.” The panic that Tim had been desperately trying to keep at bay came bubbling to the surface, and his chest started to constrict as he looked at the open fields. He swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to keep the tears at bay, but knowing at some point in the next few minutes, he would be crying. Either from relief, or grief.
He took a moment to calm himself, repeating the words he had said to Jackson earlier in the day to himself in his head. “The only way that you are good to her is if you are focused solely on saving her, not playing worst-case scenarios.”
He turned to look at the house briefly, before realizing that there was no way Caleb would have buried her close to the house. He turned to Jackson and explained, before summoning Jackson to follow him. He took off running as far as he could as fast as he could.
A few minutes later, they came to the top of a hill. “Lets split up,” He suggested to Jackson. “You go left, alright?” Jackson nodded, and took off to the left. Tim continued forward, looking around for any possible sight that Caleb could have buried her.
Then, as he was coming down the slope of another hill, something caught his eye. A sparkle, so bright it nearly blinded him briefly. He didn’t think anything of it at first, but then realized that there wasn’t much around there that could produce a sparkle like that. He took a step closer and looked again, finding the sparkle once more. He ran up to the spot the sparkle originated from, and fell to his knees in front of it.
He scooped up the source of the sparkle, and could have cried right then and there when he realized what it was.
Her ring. Her moonstone ring.
He stood up, and began looking around in the dirt for any indication that she could be close. He began kicking dirt around, and stomping, hoping to God that she had dropped it on purpose, and it wasn’t another one of Caleb’s tricks.
But, when he stomped again, and heard the unmistakable sound of rubber on metal, he knew it wasn’t a trick. Lucy had left him a clue, and she was right there.
He stomped two more times just to be sure, but once he heard the clanging two more times, he turned around and shouted. “I’VE GOT HER!” He then pocketed the ring, dropped to his knees, and began digging with his bare hands.
His hands ached after a few seconds, the sharp rocks in the sand cutting and digging into his skin, but his need to save Lucy, get her out of that barrel outweighed all of that. He was so close to her, he just needed to keep going.
A few moments later, Nyla, Jackson, and Angela joined him in the digging, with the rest of the officers headed their way. The local PD joined in moments later, bringing shovels, making the process move quicker. The metal of the shovels hit the metal of the barrel, and Tim choked out a sob.
“Guys,” He managed to say. “Right here.” He said as he reached forward for the latch on the barrel, pulling it towards him. It took two pulls, but on the second one the latch snapped, and the lid came off.
He threw it behind him, and looked into the barrel.
There she was, hunched over, her curled hair laying over her back, tangled with dirt and blood.
“Come on!” Tim yelled, and began pulling Lucy out of the barrel. Everyone joined in and helped him get her out and onto the ground.
He touched her head softly once she was laid on the ground, and leaned in, listening for breathing. He heard Grey ask if she was breathing, but didn’t answer. When he heard no breathing, he cupped her chin and her forehead, breathing two rescue breaths into her mouth to help her lungs inflate. He then moved his hands to her chest and started compressions, watching her face for any sign of life.
As he did the compressions, all he could focus on was her. He got to her, now all he could do was hope he could restart her heart in time. The more compressions he did, the more desperate he became. Why wasn’t her heart starting to beat? Why wasn’t she moving, breathing, crying? Was she-
Lucy gasped in a deep breath, her body starting to shake. Tim cried out in happiness as her eyes fluttered open. He reached behind her and helped sit her up, cradling her to his chest when she burst into tears, curling towards his chest.
“You’re okay,” He whispered to her, as he pulled her closer. As he held her, he noticed that all of the anger, pain, anxiety, and fear had disappeared. As soon as she took that gulping breath in, his body knew she was safe, that she was alive.
“You’re okay,” He whispered into her hair. Even after all that she went through, she still smelled like herself, and it calmed Tim down even further. “You’re safe. I’ve got you. He can’t hurt you anymore.” He whispered as he cradled her head to his chest.
He breathed deeply, letting the tears fall from his eyes. They got to her in time, and she was going to be okay. She was back in his arms, she was breathing, and was crying. All signs she was a survivor.
——
Tim rode with her in the ambulance. When the paramedics had arrived on scene, she refused to let go of Tim, starting to go into a panic attack whenever someone tried to separate her from him. Once they had gotten her into the ambulance, and had taken her vitals, they gave her a sedative, and she fell asleep within a minute, still holding tightly to Tim’s hand.
Tim held onto her hand the entire ambulance ride, and then helicopter ride back to St Stephens, his eyes locked onto the bleeding marks from where she had been bound at the wrists. He didn’t let go until they landed at St Stephens, and she was rushed into the back to be examined.
He was shown into a waiting room, where he was told that Dr Sawyer would come and get him when he could see her. He was about to sit down, when his phone began to ring. He fished it out of his pocket, and answered it, briefly seeing Nolan’s name flash across the screen.
“Tim,” John said as soon as he picked up. “Listen, I don’t want you to question what I’m about to ask you, I just need you to do it.” He said, and Tim, who was still in shock from everything, just agreed, and listened to what John had to say. “I need you to go to Mid Wilshire Childcare Centre. You need to go to the baby room and pick up Tamara Chen, and bring her to the hospital. Don’t forget your ID. You’re on the approved pick up list and I’ve called ahead, so don’t worry about any questions. There will be someone waiting for you at the front door to show you where to go, alright?” He said, and Tim, who was utterly confused now, nodded.
“Yeah,” he said. “Yeah, okay.” He said goodbye to John, and left the hospital immediately after informing the nurses that he would be back. He hopped in the shop, stopped by the station briefly to grab a carseat, and then hopped back in the shop.
He pulled into Mid Wilshire Childcare Centre, and grabbed his drivers licence out of his wallet, before making his way to the front door. There was a middle aged woman waiting for him, a smile on her face.
“Tim Bradford, I’m assuming?” She said, and Tim nodded.
“Yes, ma’am.”
The lady nodded. “I’m Martha, the chef here. If you follow me, I can show you to the baby room. I know you’re in a hurry.” She said. She turned, put a code into a key pad, and entered the building, Tim following behind her. As soon as they walked in, Martha turned right, and led him to the end of the hallway. They entered a small classroom with two educators, and 4 babies. 2 of the babies were playing in a water table, the other one was sitting at the table, eating banana, and a third one, who didn’t look older than a few weeks old,  being held in a rocking chair by another educator.
“Tim, this is Ella, and Cara. Ella is Tamara’s primary educator.” Martha said, and Tim nodded to her.
“Nice to meet you, Ella.”
Ella smiled. “You too, sir.” She said. “Tamara has had a really good day today. She slept well, drank both bottles, and enjoyed our walk we took them on.” She said, as she went over to the other educator, Cara, and took the small infant from her.
She carried her over, and Tim blinked quickly, realizing that the small infant must be Tamara. “Okay, thank you.” Tim said.
Ella smiled. “No problem. We will need some more wipes for her, probably in the next day or so.” Tim nodded.
“Okay perfect. Is there anything else?”
“Oh, yes.” Ella said, grabbing the binder off of the counter. “Could I just see your ID?”
Tim nodded and handed it over. Ella compared the names before smiling and handing it back.
“Thank you.” She said, putting the binder down. “If you follow me, I’ll show you Tamara’s things.”
Tim followed Ella as she showed him her cubby, and handed him her backpack.
“Okay, you’re all set, we’ll see you later.” Ella said and Tim thanked her again before following Martha out of the building.
“Have a good night,” Martha said, holding the door open for him.
“Thank you, you too,” He responded, looking down at the small infant in his arms that apparently belonged to Lucy.
“Okay, little one,” he said quietly, opening up the door to the shop, and buckling her in her carseat. “Let’s go see Mama, I guess.”
—-
When Tim walked back into the waiting room, he was greeted with Grey and Luna sitting together. They both turned to look at him when he walked in with the baby carrier, and Grey smiled.
“Oh good,” Grey said. “You didn’t have any issues picking up?” He asked, and Tim shook his head no.
“No, sir. I guess Nolan called ahead because she was ready to go when I got there.” He said.
Grey chuckled. “You look confused, son.”
Tim laughed quietly, sitting down, and placing the car seat at his feet. “I am very confused. When did Lucy have a baby?” He asked, as he bent down and got Tamara out. Tamara gazed up at him as he lifted her up, holding her head in one hand and bum in the other.
“She didn’t,” Grey said. Tim looked at him, confused. Grey sighed. “Look, I’m going to tell you this simply because you need to know why you’re holding a baby that shares a name with your rookie.” He said, and Tim nodded. “When you were on leave for your GSW, Lucy was on patrol with Wrigley. She found a mother OD’d, just hours after having given birth to her.” He said, pointing to Tamara. Tim’s eyes locked onto the tiny infant while Grey spoke.
“Lucy came with her to the hospital, and when DCFS showed up, Lucy asked to take her in, as she is an emergency foster parent. DCFS agreed, and that’s why Lucy went on leave.” He said, and Tim looked at him in shock.
“Oh,” He said, stunned.
Grey nodded. “Yep. Then, 4 weeks ago, she got a call from DCFS stating that they were unable to locate any of her family, and Lucy was given the option to adopt her.”
Tim smiled. “Which she took.” He said, running his thumb over her cheek.
Grey nodded, as Luna sat on the other side of Tim.
“Yes,” Luna said. “And she’s doing a terrific job as a single mother.”
Tim smiled again, moving Tamara closer to his chest. “I have no doubt about that.” He said. “Gosh, she’s so beautiful.” He commented, as Tamara’s eyes fluttered shut.
“That she is,” Grey said. “Look, please don’t be mad with Lucy over hiding this from you. She was just trying to protect Tamara.”
Tim nodded. “I know, and I’m not. But I am going to tell her that I am going to help her, in anyway she needs. I’m her training officer, but also her friend, and I’m going to help her through this.”

Charity Case - Yoongi
Not super edited, not sure if I love it, blah blah blah, please still enjoy...
I’ve been in such a Yoongi mood lately 😇
----------------------------------------------------
You stared at your bank statement, or more specifically, your savings account. You had saved up a decent amount of money, that was for sure, but it wasn’t enough. It wasn’t enough to kickstart your dream.
It all happened a few days ago on a Tuesday afternoon. You had just finished lunch with a friend who was from your home country. The two of you had found a restaurant specializing in the traditional food from there since you both were craving a taste of home. On your walk back to your apartment, you noticed the road you usually took was blocked off with construction (typical for the summertime in Seoul you were learning), so ultimately you had to take a detour, pulling out your Maps app. Although you lived in Hongdae, you really only took the same few roads daily. Therefore, you still did not quite know your way around.
The new directions had you weave down a side street, one you had never been on before. To your surprise, it was full of restaurants, shops, and cafes, and since Hongdae was known for homing many foreigners within the city of Seoul, many of them featured things you were very familiar with from back home.
Strolling down the block you made mental notes of places you wanted to try, places that were bustling with people, figuring they must be good if that’s the case.
All of a sudden, between an American grocery store and floral shop, you noticed a beautiful empty store front. You peered in the large windows and was met with a decent sized space, white walls, white tile floors, a lot of natural lighting. It was perfect. In the corner of the same window there was a sign that read “FOR LEASE” with the name of the agent and a phone number.
You took a picture of said sign before stuffing your phone back in your pocket. There was no harm in calling, right? Even just getting a feel for the space was harmless…right?
For ever since coming to Seoul from abroad, it was your dream to open your own bakery. To make desserts and breads and pastries fresh daily for the Seoulites to try and the foreigners to feel nostalgic for their home countries. You were currently working a boring office job as a translator, saving for the moment you could follow your true dream.
And maybe this was a sign… this was it.
So, you did call. You did get a feel for the space. And it was perfect. Turns out it had been a pizza shop that went under, (too much competition) so there were already ovens and freezers and refrigeration, all in great working condition. The agent informed you the floor could be ripped up and replaced, there were already light fixtures attached in the ceiling that could connect to chandeliers and you were already picturing plants hanging from macrame in front of the large windows.
But there was just one problem.
As you stared at your savings account and compared it to the down payment in the brochure the realtor had given you… they didn’t match. You were short about 1/3 of the cost, especially since there was still some work to be done inside to really make it your own.
You heart sunk. You mentally scolded yourself for getting your hopes up. It was in such a prime location; how could you have been so stupid to think it was in your price range!
Suddenly, instead of staring at your lack of funds, you were staring at your face in your phone’s front camera as you received a FaceTime call request. ‘Yoongi’ was the name at the top of the phone screen, accompanied by your favorite picture you had taken of him candidly making a gummy smile caused by a joke you had told. Right on time for the daily call you two always had.
You sighed. Did you really want to speak to him right now? You were great friends, you had (stupidly) told him about the place and he had been so incredibly excited for you. He was so supportive and encouraging… it was incredibly endearing. Reminding yourself of that you pressed the green accept button.
Immediately you were met with the handsome face and bleach blonde hair of Min Yoongi. He was resting his head back on his black leather sofa, his narrow eyes meeting yours between screens.
“Hi Yoongi-ah,” you gave him a small smile.
“Hey (y/n).” he responded, returning the smile.
You stood up and walked over to the couch in your small apartment, sitting down and curling your legs underneath you.
“What are you up to?” you asked.
He reached towards the screen and flipped it, so it was now looking forward. An NBA basketball game was playing on the large tv in his living room.
“Watching the game. It’s game 4 of the finals so if Pheonix wins this one they only have one more game to win before they win it all.”
He returned the screen to face him.
“Oh, that’s cool,” you replied, “Did you have a lot on your work schedule today?”
He ran a hand through his hair.
“It wasn’t too bad. Practiced PTD for a Japanese tv performance we have coming up. Worked on some music between rehearsals,” he shrugged, “the usual.”
You nodded.
“You?” he questioned, “how was your day?”
You looked down at the couch cushions and fiddled with the blanket that laid beside you. You bit your lip before responding.
“Fine. It was fine. I, uh, I had that appointment. With the agent in charge of that space I was interested in?”
Yoongi’s eyes got wide, and he perked his head up.
“Shit, I forgot that was today. How was it? Did you like it as much as you thought you would?”
A small grin appeared on your face remembering how picturesque it had been.
“It was even better than I thought it would be, Yoongs,” you told him.
He smiled wide.
“That’s incredible! So wh-what now? Did you put down the money for it? Or did you need me to come with you to look at it again, see if there’s anything that needs fixing that I can do??”
You closed your eyes tightly and shook your head. He was so sweet, and it broke your heart even more.
“Thank you, Yoongi, for offering, but that… won’t be necessary.”
You chewed the inside of your cheek, expecting his next question to make you feel uneasy.
He cocked his head and furrowed his eyebrows.
“What? Why not? I really don’t mind.”
You sighed, suddenly incredibly embarrassed to be admitting this to your friend.
“I just saw the statement of my bank account and, well, I don’t… I can’t afford the down payment. I don’t have enough saved up yet.”
You couldn’t help but look down in shame. Yoongi never talked about his money or how much he made being in BTS, but you weren’t stupid. He worked incredibly hard for everything he and his fellow members have achieved and you were nothing but proud of him. He deserved it all, even the unassumingly large income he was bringing in. He would never, ever flaunt it or make you feel inferior to him because of it, but you still felt slightly inefficient in your confession.
Yoongi’s face softened.
“Oh… I’m-I’m sorry, (y/n).”
You shrugged and gave him a small, hopeful smile.
“It’s alright. It just means it wasn’t meant to be, that’s all.”
He gave you a sympathetic frown.
“But you said it was perfect.” He reminded you.
You placed your fingers to the bridge of your nose.
“Because it is, Yoongi-ah. It’s bright and cozy and practically ready. Not to mention it’s an incredible location,” you rolled your eyes at yourself, “I really should have known it would be too much.”
“How much is it, if you don’t mind me asking?”
You looked away again and scrunched your nose, before telling him the exact amount required to put down in order for the space to be yours.
His mouth formed into that straight line he was known for when he was neither happy nor displeased by something.
“Could you get a loan? Like from a bank?”
You shook your head.
“I already looked into it,” you informed him, “it’s weird because my bank is home, but I’m abroad so there would be a lot of hoops to jump through and the chances of being approved are slim to none. Basically, it’s not worth putting a mark on my credit for.”
He nodded in understanding, looking away for a moment. His eyebrows knitted together in thought, and as much as you appreciated him trying to help you, you had already thought of all the possible solutions, and you didn’t really want to talk about it anymore.
“It’s okay, Yoongs, really, I’ll find someplace else.” You smiled reassuringly at him.
He looked back at you and hummed in agreement before you began talking about something else.
 -
The next day you had barely stepped out of your office building after a long day at work when your phone’s text message notification sound went off.
5:49pm from Yoongi: Are you off work yet?
5:49pm to Yoongi: Leaving now. What’s up?
5:50pm from Yoongi: Can you meet me here at the HYBE building ASAP?
You furrowed your eyebrows.
5:50pm to Yoongi: Sure. Is everything okay?
5:50pm from Yoongi: Yeah, everything is fine
5:51pm from Yoongi: Come to the Forum at the top floor when you get here, okay? I already told the front desk you’re coming
5:51pm to Yoongi: You’re being weird but okay
5:51pm from Yoongi: Don’t worry so much you pabo, it’s nothing bad
You rolled your eyes and locked your phone before hailing a taxi.
The ride to Yoongi’s work was longer than usual because of traffic, but eventually you made it, giving a wad of cash to the driver and stepping out of the cab. The tall, reflective HYBE building intimidated you a little bit, like you were going to get in trouble just for stepping foot on its grounds, but you confidently passed the transparent sign that read “HYBE We Believe in Music” and opened the doors to the main entrance. A woman at the front desk greeted you and asked to see your ID when you told her you were here to see Min Yoongi. When she confirmed your identity, she gestured toward the elevators.
“Yes, you may proceed to the Forum on the 19th floor, he is waiting near the café there.”
You nodded and thanked her before letting the elevator doors close in front of you.
The aroma of coffee wafted into your nose immediately upon stepping out of the elevators. It smelled heavenly. You walked past many groups of HYBE businessmen and women taking breaks or in small meetings before finally spotting Yoongi at a table in the corner near the large windows. He was fixated on his phone, an iced Americano on the table in front of him, and another iced drink sitting across. It had been a few weeks since you had seen him in person as his schedule was usually jam packed, but upon seeing him now your heart skipped a beat and a wide smile formed on your lips. You hadn’t seen his newly bleached hair in person yet and he looked even more handsome than you imagined. His pale skin glowed in the sunlight. It was good to see him again. You missed him.
“Hi,” you said, pulling out the chair and sitting down across from him, “the building is incredible.”
He glanced up at you and nodded in agreement.
“It’s nice. They did a great job. I don’t mind coming to work as much now.” He chuckled to himself, and you rolled your eyes.
He pointed to the beverage in front of you.
“The drinks are good, too, I got your favorite.”
You smiled at him and took a sip. He was right, it was delicious.
 “Thanks, Yoongs.”
He stared at you for a moment, a grin forming on his face. Your face felt hot, and you had to look away.
“Sooo… why did you need me here so urgently?” you quickly wondered.
“Urgently?” he retaliated, “it sure took you long enough.”
Oh, how you loved his bluntness.
You scoffed.
“Well, excuuuuse me, Mr. Min, normal people go home from work around this time, so traffic was absolutely horrendous! Could you have picked any other time of day?”
He smiled and looked down at his hands while shaking his head.
“This was literally the only open slot I had today, sorry,” he glanced at the time on his phone, “and I’m already almost out of time as it is.”
You waved your hands, urging him on.
“Well then, what is it that it couldn’t wait?”
He scratched the back of his neck and chuckled nervously.
“Aiisshh okay, please don’t be mad.”
You narrowed your eyes and cocked your head.
“Mad? What? What is it, Min Suga?”
He took a deep breath and reached into the front pocket of his jeans, pulling out a small piece of paper. Then he unfolded it carefully and placed it in the middle of the table facing you.
To your shock, it was a personal check. From Yoongi’s bank account. Written for the exact amount you had told him last night of the down payment for the perfect shop you couldn’t afford.
Your jaw dropped and your eyes left the rectangular paper to look into his. They were a little weary, maybe, but hopeful.
“Yoongi…” you started.
He held up his hand.
“Please. Just take it, (y/n).”
Your heart was pounding. There in front of you was the exact amount you needed to start your dream. Your very own bakery. And combined with the amount you had in your savings you could even add some extra touches!
But… you couldn’t do it. You knew you couldn’t. This was your dream, and even if that amount of money was nothing to someone like Yoongi, you wanted to be the one to earn it, like he had earned all his successes.
“I-I… I can’t, Yoongi.”
He sighed and closed his eyes.
“(y/n) …”
“Thank you, Yoongi, truly, it means so much.”
He shook his head and motioned to the check.
“Then just take it.”
“I don’t want it.”
“But you said so yourself that place is perfect! You were in love with it!”
You nodded, trying to keep your cool. Did he have to keep reminding you how great it was?
“Yes. But I cannot afford it. There will be other places.”
“You can afford it if you take this. Please, (y/n), this won’t hurt me in anyway financially, I’m good. I want you to be, too.”
“I am good, Yoongi. I work hard and I’m saving. This place is just not it and I have to accept that. Maybe a time will come where I can afford someplace like it, and when it does it will be just as perfect.”
He rolled his eyes.
“How do you know you’ll find another place?? Jesus, you’re so fucking stubborn sometimes, (y/n).”
Your hands balled up into fists. Okay that was it. Calling you stubborn because you wanted to be self sufficient had made you hit your boiling point.
“I’m stubborn? How about I just don’t want to be your charity case, idol Min Yoongi, hmm?” you whispered harshly to him, “I can take care of myself, okay? I don’t want your help; I don’t need your help. I’m a fucking adult, too, you know, just because I don’t make millions doesn’t mean I can’t make smart financial decisions. God, do you think I’m just that pathetic?”
You got up to leave, so over this conversation.
Yoongi squeezed his eyes shut.
“What? Fuck, (y/n), no I don’t think you’re pathetic. If anything… I-I’m the pathetic one.”
You scoffed and rolled your eyes before marching back toward the elevators and hitting the down arrow button.
Yoongi followed.
“Do you know why?” he asked, jumping into the elevator with you before the doors could close.
It was just the two of you as it began its long descent down 19 floors.
You narrowed your eyes at him.
“Why what? Why you’re pathetic?” you snorted, “Because you just offered your friend an obscene amount of money for something you have no part in?”
He looked down at the floor and took a deep breath.
Finally, he peered back up at you and his dark brown eyes met yours.
“Well, that, and because,” he paused, shuffling nervously on his feet, “because I’m having a really hard time telling that same friend how I truly feel about her.”
Your heart stopped and your mouth fell open again, in a different kind of shock.
“What?” you said softly.
“Fuck, I love you, (y/n)!” the pale skin of his face turned a bright red, and he took his gaze away again, “Aiiisshh, I’m sorry, I’m just horrible at showing my emotions and telling people how I feel. I guess I was hoping offering you the money would help you understand but I didn’t even think how it would come off, I just wanted you to know that I support you and I want to be apart of your decisions in life as more than a friend and- “
You cut off his worrisome rant by flinging yourself towards him and kissing him hard. It was his turn to be shocked, but he instantly got the memo and pushed you back against the wall of the elevator in passion. He wrapped his arms around your waist, his large hands grazing the bare skin of your lower back under your shirt. You gripped your hands in his blonde locks.
The elevator let out a ding signaling you had reached the first floor. You pulled away from each other, panting from the heat of the moment. You smiled.
“I love you, too, Yoongs. But I’m still not taking your money.”
He rolled his eyes and snorted.
Then you started to exit the elevator, but you felt him grab your wrist.
“Wait.”
You turned back toward him with confused eyes.
He grinned at you, his eyes suddenly full of lust.
“Do you maybe... want to see my new studio?”

Here’s a really informational text post explaining the explosion with additional resources to help. And if you have the means, here is the link to donate to the Lebanese Red Cross.
REQUEST: Going grocery shopping with your husband Shawn during corona and running into fans
Let’s Chat!! | MASTERLIST
Warnings: Coronavirus (please remember to wear your masks!!!)
Word Count: 2.3K
“Do you have the list?” You mumbled through your mask.
Shawn shut the driver’s side door close as he slipped the elastic strings of his mask around his ears, “I thought you had it?”
You looked at him in disbelief as the two of you walked toward the front of the grocery store, “You said and I quote,”  you cleared your throat to lower your voice, “Of course, I have the list Y/n, I’m not irresponsible.”
He rolled his eyes at the glare you sent him as he took out a clorox wipe from a ziplock bag to wipe down the handle of the shopping cart before he put his hands on it, “Tomato tomahto.”
“Shawn, we’re in the middle of a pandemic,” you glared at him again as the two of you entered through the automatic doors, “We need specific things and can’t keep running back and forth to the store.”
“I––Yeah, you’re right, sorry.”
For a second you forgot you were wearing a mask, so you just smiled at him as a response. But when you realized that all he could see were the crinkles at the corner of your eyes, you patted his bicep, “It’s alright, let’s just get what we need and then leave.”
Shawn nodded as he pushed the cart over toward the produce section.  You picked out some lettuce, peppers, apples, and other assortments of fruits and vegetables.  As you were tying a knot around a plastic bag you had put asparagus in, Shawn’s voice caused your head to turn his way.
“How do you pick out an avocado?”
“How do you––What?”
Shawn stared down at the avocados, eyebrows pulled together as he scratched his chin, “Like, I know there’s something about the color and feel of it, but I don’t wanna touch them and then put them back.”
He had a point, you thought.  There was a fear factor about touching a piece of fruit––of touching anything in the grocery store––and putting it back on the shelf that could potentially put someone at risk of getting sick.
“I guess just grab a few?” You pulled down another plastic bag from the dispenser, wiggling your hands inside to fully open it and holding it out to Shawn, “We’ll eat the softer one’s first and just keep an eye on the rest of them.”
Shawn nodded as he picked up a few avocados and placed them in the bag you held open for him.  Once Shawn had put six avocados in the bag you gave him a look silently asking him if he really needed all of the avocados.
“I like avocado toast,” he gave you a cheeky wink, “And it’s not like we can put them back.”
You let out an exasperated sigh, knowing full well he was grinning under his mask, as he pushed the cart forward, “What else do we need?”
“I would know if we had a list.”
“I said I was sorry!”
You tilted your head and gave him a deliberate look that showed you didn’t believe him.  You heard him let out a faux disgruntled sigh as he looked at you with nothing but love in his eyes.  Shawn continued to push the cart forward and you told him to jokingly get whatever he wanted since the list was long forgotten.
And he took your lighthearted joke to heart as the two of you went up and down the aisles.  Shawn grabbed various cereal boxes you didn’t even know he liked to eat, seven different kinds of pasta noodles––They’re on sale, Y/n––snacks ranging from potato chips to dried kale flakes, and spent more than enough time in the baking aisle.
You stood next to the cart that Shawn abandoned as you watched him walk up and down the aisle; front teeth biting down on his bottom lip in concentration as he leaned in close to the shelves with squinted eyes, reading the labels.
“You’re serious about this?” You warily looked at the way he was so concentrated.
“Of course,” he said unfazed as he turned his head over his shoulder to give you a duh look, “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“It’s just so…” Your words trailed off as he whipped his head back around and bent his knees to squint at the labels on the bottom shelf, “Unexpected.”
Shawn let out a little triumphant ah ha as he picked up bread flour from the bottom shelf.  He shrugged his shoulders at you as he dropped the bread flour in the cart, “Everyone seems to be making sourdough bread.”
For what felt like the millionth time since you stepped foot in the grocery store, you let out a sigh, “That doesn’t mean you should.”
Shawn glared at you, “My mom said she would FaceTime me to help.”
Your eyes crinkled as you laughed out loud and pushed the cart down to the cleaning supplies aisle.  You picked up the limit of two packs of paper towels, two packs of toilet paper, but the store was unfortunately out of clorox wipes.
After you picked up those essential supplies, you went down to pick up some bread, eggs, and then down to the milk.  You opened the fridge door, took a gallon of milk out, but before you could fully close the door, Shawn offered up his spaced-out thoughts.
“What’s the difference between one percent and two percent milk?”
“Shawn, I don’t know,” You turned around and saw his nose an inch away from the glass of the fridge, “And get your nose away––You don’t know who’s touched that surface.”
He moved his head back, but it was still too close then what you would’ve liked, “There’s so many types of milk…And like, non-milk’s…Have you ever tried pea milk?”
You now remembered why you always left Shawn at the house when you went food shopping.
“You usually like fat-free milk in your cereal–––”
“Shawn––Are you Shawn Mendes?”
Shawn pulled his head completely away from the glass and took a few steps toward you as to put some distance between the fans and him, “Uh––Yeah––Hi, how’s it going?”
Even with their masks on, you could tell that they were trying really hard to hold in their excitement.  While the three of them looked to be various ages, you could tell that they were sisters.
“We’re so good––”
“––As good as you can be in a pandemic––”
“Are you grocery shopping?”
The last question made you laugh because if being in a grocery store wasn’t obvious enough, you also had a cart full of food.  But you knew that they really admired Shawn’s music, that they were also probably nervous, and just trying to make conversation with him.
“Yeah,” Shawn smiled at them as he gestured to you, “Y/n forgot the list though––”
“You said you had it!” You cut him off and turned your attention to the fans, “He’s always so forgetful.”
“You guys are too cute––”
“––Yeah like your wedding pictures were to die for––”
“What song did you have your first dance to?”
Like how you directed your attention to the trio of girls, the youngest of the sisters directed this question at you.
“Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis was our first dance song,” you blushed at the memory that was just a little under a year ago, as you looked up at Shawn, who was already looking down at you with idolization shining bright his eyes for you, “He stepped on my dress a few times.”
Shawn scoffed and the idolization in his eyes turned into bewilderment, “You stepped on my shoes.”
“Tomato tomahto,” you shot his words back at him.
“That is really funny––”
“––That song is so romantic––”
“Can we get a picture?”
The two older sisters apologized and silently berated the youngest sister saying how they probably didn’t want to be bothered while out; especially in a pandemic.  But Shawn reassured her that it was fine.
“Okay, so let’s…” Shawn was trying to strategize the safest way to take a picture with fans, “Let’s do this as socially distant as possible…Hmm…Okay so how about I get behind you girls and you aim the camera up so you’re able to see me in the distance?”
They all agreed with wide eyes and vigorous nods of their head, verbalizing their gratitude toward Shawn and how he was being so compromising and careful with the current situation.  You stood by the cart as you witnessed the oldest sister stretch her arm out so she was able to get her sisters and Shawn, who was standing more than six feet behind them, all into the picture.
“I really appreciate you girls being so understanding with taking the picture and not having it be…normal.  We’ve––” Shawn gestured his hand between you and him, “––been quarantining pretty intensely, but I still don’t want to risk you all––or my wife––getting infected.”
Just like the picture, the sister’s understood his concerns.
“Really, thank you so much–––”
“––This has been the highlight of my quarantine––”
“When are you releasing new music?”
You let out a laugh that your mask, thankfully, muffled as all the sisters continued to talk over each other, but were interrupted when the youngest would blurt out a question.
Shawn’s laugh was more hearty and audible to the fans, “I’ve been writing more,” Shawn gave you a side glance, “I’ve had some good inspiration lately.”
Once they all thanked Shawn again, they were trotting off to wherever they came from.  Shawn was silent for the remaining of the shopping trip, only offering his opinion every now and then when you asked him a question.  Checking out was a breeze, and soon enough you were walking outside with the bags, placing them in the back of Shawn’s car.
The two of you opened your doors, stepped into the car, but before you buckled up, you held your hand out to Shawn who was already squeezing hand sanitizer into his hand.  You thanked him as you rubbed your hands together, the alcohol smell pungent in the car.
“Alright there?” You clicked your seatbelt in place as Shawn started the car.
He placed a hand on the back of your seat as he looked through the back windshield, “Yeah, just…It was nice seeing some fans…Almost forgot I was famous for a minute.”
“You might’ve forgotten that you’re famous, but your fans will never forget you.”
He tried to contain the growing smile by biting the corner of his bottom lip as he looked over at you.  You offered him a shining smile and with a shake of his head and a small chuckle, he placed a hand on your thigh and gave you a slight squeeze.
The rest of the ride was silent and you pulled out your phone to scroll through Twitter while Shawn sang along to the radio.  You were mindlessly scrolling, not really paying attention to your timeline, but then you saw an update account retweet the picture of Shawn at the grocery store with fans.  You clicked on the profile and saw that there was a link to the full Instagram post.
You were directed from Twitter to the Instagram app and smiled at the picture’s caption.
Ran into Y/n and Shawn Mendes at the store! They were very cute, but Shawn forgot their food list!  Y/n kept teasing him. And they were both wearing masks!  And before anyone says anything about the pic, Shawn was more than 6 ft away and stood behind us.  He also said that he and Y/n had been quarantining intensely!  We love our quarantine King and Queen Y/n and Shawn Mendes ✨ 💖💫
You decided to humor yourself and read the comments.  And while almost all of them were positive, there were still some people commenting on how they thought you and Shawn weren’t actually married and it was still just for PR.
Someone did comment: What supermarket? I’m tryna meet Shawn 👀
But the fan, the oldest sister, who you met just under an hour ago at the supermarket responded: Sorry! Not going to give out their private info just in case they live in that area!
You smiled at the thoughtfulness of her response and hearted the comment.
Before you knew it, you were back at your house washing your hands, and bringing in the grocery bags.  You unpacked the groceries one by one, putting vegetables in the fridge as Shawn put the sevendifferent kinds of pasta away in the pantry.
You walked back to where the grocery bags were on the floor, pulling out carrots and red peppers, when you saw a corner piece of white paper slightly sticking out from the top of your husband’s back pocket.
“Shawn?” You asked cautiously, not sure if your eyes were betraying you or not.
He peeked his head over his shoulder, “Yeah?”
Your eyes drifted down to his back pocket, “What’s that?”
Shawn followed your gaze and turned his head down to his backside, with a frown on his face, as he reached a hand into his pocket.  And just as you expected, he pulled out a crumpled white piece of scrap paper, the one you knew you wrote your food list on.
His eyebrows were scrunched together, reading over the list, and then his eyes widened when he realized what he was reading.  He looked up at you with an apologetic look, “Now also wouldn’t be the time to tell you that I forgot to buy pasta sauce?”
Your shoulders fell, just as fast as your mouth, as you looked at him with wild eyes, “You bought seven different kinds of pasta and didn’t buy any sauce?!”

It happened on a Tuesday. Not a special Tuesday—not a Holiday Tuesday—but a regular, 9-5 Tuesday morning. Tuesdays were when Richie and Eddie did their grocery shopping, because Eddie could work a half-day and because it didn’t cut into any potential weekend plans.
So Eddie had his jacket on, buttoned and zipped up, and was following Richie out of their apartment when Richie, already one foot out the door, stopped, mumbled “oh, almost forgot,” and turned around, bending at the knee. Eddie stared at him dumbly.
“What are you doing?” He asked.
“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m tying my shoe.”
But Richie’s hands were nowhere near his shoes; they were patting around his jeans and searching his jacket pockets. Eddie felt his throat closing up.
“Get up,” Eddie said, cheeks heating.
“What? Eddie—”
“Get up or I’m going to start crying.”
“You are not going to—woah, hey!” Richie exclaimed, startled by the tears that started forming in Eddie’s eyes. He reached out for Eddie’s hands and pulled him down, rather than getting up. “I’m sorry, I thought we talked about this?”
Eddie bit down on the inside of his cheek, feeling the sudden weight of a small, velvet box between he and Richie’s hands.
They had talked about it. Plenty. That didn’t make it any less overwhelming.
“But right here?” he said instead. Richie shrugged.
“You said you’d see it coming. I wanted to surprise you.”
“Well congratulations,” Eddie said, pulling one of his hands free to wipe a tear off his cheek. He laughed so Richie knew he wasn’t actually upset. “Can we get up now?”
Richie frowned at him. “But I have a whole speech! I worked very hard on it.”
Eddie groaned, already feeling lightheaded. His feelings in regards to all things Richie Tozier were always so close to the surface, and he hated how easily Richie could break them through.
“Are there jokes?” he asked hesitantly. Richie’s frown deepened and he cursed under his breath.
“Ben said to take out the jokes.”
“Ben!?” Eddie yelped. “Ben with the haiku love poems at age 12 Ben!? Who am I in love with again?”
“Geeze yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry.”
Eddie looked at Richie’s face, endearing and excited, and sighed.
“Alright,” he said. “Go ahead.”
“Okay.” Richie grinned, but his posture shifted, shoulders moving awkwardly, looking suddenly nervous.
“Eddie Kaspbrak, I love...grocery shopping with you.” He paused and Eddie tilted his head, curious and amused. Richie went on. “I’ve been doing it alone for the last twenty years and it’s, you know, it’s a chore, it’s a necessity. But you made it something to look forward to and now it’s... it’s the best part of my week. To get to have these day-to-day routines next to you, to know I’m not alone in those spaces... you don’t know what that means to me.
“Look, I don’t believe you can build a relationship on grand gestures. Marriage is all about the little things, and I think we do those well and I’d like to—to keep doing them. Maybe I love that you’re the man I carved my initials next to when I was a kid, and maybe I love that we overcame memory loss and found each other after decades of being lost, and yeah it’s pretty rad that we destroyed the god damn ‘eater of worlds’ together. But mostly I love that I can go grocery shopping with you. And that I can get regular Crest mint because your baking soda toothpaste burns my gums and it’s not the end of the world.”
Richie stopped like he was done, and silence stretched between them.
“Uh, Rich?” Eddie said when it didn’t seem like he was going to go on.
“Hm? Oh yeah! Eddie, I love you, you’re my best friend. Will you marry me? But there’s something you should know before you answer.”
Eddie raised an eyebrow at him warily.
“What is it?”
“I forgot to put milk on our grocery list, so you’ll have to remember. Also, I fucked your mom,” Richie added that second part like it was an afterthought.
Eddie rolled his eyes and shoved him, then pulled him back. He held his face in his hands and kissed him.
There was probably something to say about their positions on the floor, or Richie proposing with the door wide open—something really lovely, probably—but Eddie couldn’t feel his legs, or register the way Richie was watching him, and found that all he could really say was,
“Yeah, Richie. You big, dumb goof. I’ll marry you.”

wicked regrets
Tumblr media
request: “a seonghwa scenario in which he’s a “serious” looking boyfriend who doesn’t really celebrate Halloween but the reader does, so he gets jealous of her friends cuz she’s spending too much time with them decorating and shopping for costumes”
pairing: seonghwa x reader (gender neutral besides reader in a female character costume)
genre: angst + fluff ending
word count: 2.1k
✩ [author’s note] for those of you that aren’t familiar with the movie the nightmare before christmas, theseeeee are the characters/costumes i refer to in the story! :)
✩ masterlist
✩ requests : check bio or masterlist ♡
One afternoon in late September, you and your boyfriend were out shopping when you passed by a new Halloween store that immediately caught your attention. “Oh my god! Baby we have to go in, can we just look around inside really quick please?”
“Hmm okay love, but just really quick.” The lack of excitement in Seonghwa’s voice didn’t register with you as you were already halfway in the door before he he could finish replying. You were nearly bouncing off the walls that were filled with scary costumes and spooky decorations. You two had started dating last November so it was your first Halloween with Seonghwa as your boyfriend and he could honestly say he had never seen you this ecstatic.
"Baby look!!! They have the cutest decorations look at these pumpkins and these candles!! Oooh we can get these small skeletons for the living room! What do you think?"
"Uhm I guess if you want. I don’t really celebrate it...well not since I was like 9. Isn’t it really just for kids anyways?” His words made your smile falter a bit. Halloween was your absolute favorite time of the year, and there were already so many activities planned out in your head that you wanted to do with your boyfriend. However, from the looks of it, it didn’t seem like he’d be interested in the slightest.
“No of course not...Are you telling me you don’t think Halloween is fun as an adult?”
He shrugged his shoulders as his fingers grazed a large plastic butcher knife in front of him.
“No horror movies?”
“No.”
“Pumpkin carving?”
“Too messy.”
“Decorating?”
“Waste of money, we live in an apartment and if we decorate inside no one will even see it.”
You hated to admit how disappointed you were at his answers. You knew from the start that Seonghwa was a very serious person and you rarely ever had an issue with it. However, you were a couple and wanting to do couple things for your favorite holiday would’ve meant a lot to you.
“So, you wouldn’t even go with me to a haunted house?”
“I don’t see the appeal in literally paying someone to scare me. Aren’t your friends into all that stuff too? I say you should go with them.”
The fact that he wouldn’t even entertain the thought of having a little fun with you made you sad enough but for him to just pawn you off to your friends so he didn’t have to participate made you feel even more disappointed.
“Alright then Hwa, I guess I will.” You said sighing to yourself as you walked away from him.
----------
You decided that no matter how Seonghwa felt, you weren’t going to let his lack of excitement ruin your October. You even made sure he was aware of that the day you visited the Halloween store, leaving with nearly four bags full of decorations that he helped you carry home.
When October 1st arrived, your mind had already begun to wonder about what costume you wanted to get this year. Not wanting to hear Seonghwa shoot down your couple costume ideas you decided to not even mention it to him to save yourself the disappointment. Luckily, most of your friends were eager for the holiday just like you, one afternoon as you all hung out at a coffee shop, you vented to them about your problem with Seonghwa. You added in that you were a bit sad you couldn’t live out your couple costume dream with him by going as Jack and Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas, a movie even Seonghwa knew was your favorite.
“Well I don’t have a costume picked out yet and I know that movie, I wouldn’t mind dressing up with you if you want?” Your eyes lit up at your friend Hongjoong’s suggestion. He wasn’t as tall as your boyfriend to be able to fit the costume as good but he was taller than you and that was enough.
A few days later, Seonghwa had just gotten home, walking in as you were grabbing your keys. “Oh? Are you leaving?” He asked, you never left the house that late on a Tuesday night.
“Oh, yeah I forgot to tell you my friends and I are going costume shopping. Don’t worry I won’t be out long and your food is on the stove.” You placed a quick kiss on his cheek before walking out the door. He stood there a bit shocked by your exit, but brushed it off. It’s not like it was an everyday thing.
It wasn’t until the week before Halloween that Seonghwa had begun to get frustrated. You had spent nearly every weekend either inviting your friends over or going to their apartments for Halloween baking or scary movies while he kept to himself. The first few times you told him it would be nice if he tagged along but he refused and after the third rejection you stopped asking. But now, he felt left out. Seonghwa swore to himself if you asked him again, he would accept this time, he just missed spending time with you. But you never asked.
The day before Halloween, Seonghwa was scrolling through his feed when he saw an ad for a haunted house that was only open that night and Halloween and he remembered you asking him if he’d go to one, regretting his words, he decided he should be the one to ask you this time.
He walked into the bedroom where you were adjusting your red wig onto your head. “Hey baby”, he started, sitting on the edge of the bed as he watched you at your vanity. “I know you probably have plans with your friends but...I would like to take you somewhere tomorrow night...to make up for everything I’ve missed this past month.” You saw his reflection in the mirror in front of you and you could tell how bad he was feeling, he never looked that sad.
“Where did you want to go?” You asked, turning to look at him directly.
He began telling you about the haunted house he had found but when he noticed your expression change from curiosity to a pout he stopped, knowing you had something to say.
“I...I’m sorry baby but...my friends and I are actually going there tonight. That’s why I’m all dressed up.” You said, spreading your arms to display your Sally costume to him.
At that moment, Seonghwa felt even more embarrassed of himself realizing he never even bothered to ask you what costume you had chosen and what your plans were for that night. He sat there staring at you for a few minutes, not knowing what to say to you. Before he could find the words, there was a knock on your door. You stood up, looking down at your boyfriend as his head hung slightly. “Maybe, we can try again next year?” You said, placing a kiss on his head before walking to the door to let your friends in.
When Seonghwa finally joined he looked over all your friends in their costumes, the laughter that filled the room made him feel jealous that he wasn’t apart of it. He felt his heart nearly drop as his eyes landed on your friend dressed as your cinematic lover. Even with the round mask covering his face, he knew it was Hongjoong. He always trusted him as your friend and he knew you had every right to dress up with any of your friends that you wanted but never did he expect to see this. As you all begun to head out you noticed as your boyfriend silently retreated back to the bedroom without telling you goodbye.
“Baby...Are you okay?” You asked, slowly stepping into the room to see him sitting in his previous position. He could barely even look you in the eyes.
“I’m sorry I didn’t try harder, I knew how much all this meant to you and it’s my fault for not wanting to be apart of it. But...seeing you and Hongjoong made me realize how much I really missed out on.” You caressed his cheek as he spoke, you knew he meant his apology but you weren’t sure how to comfort him. You didn’t want to leave him home all alone to feel bad while you went out with your friends. But then you had an idea, your body shot up as Seonghwa looked at you in surprise.
“I think I may have an idea...wait here!” you said and before he could question you, you were gone. He could hear muffled exchanges as you and Hongjoong talked in the living room, right as he stood up to go check on you, you opened the door to reveal yourself and Hongjoong’s costume mask and jacket in your hands. “Try these on!” You said, extending the items to him.
“Is...is Hongjoong okay with this?” He asked, hesitating as he lifted up the jacket, inspecting it slightly.
“Mhhm.” You said, smiling back at him as you two heard Hongjoong’s voice coming down the hallway.
“Oh I’m fine with that.” He chimed. “It’s this I’m not too sure about.” He said, holding out his black and white striped costume pants to Seonghwa as he stood there in his white shirt and gray boxers.
“T...they may be too...short for me.” Seonghwa said, earning a small glare from your friend.
“I’m sure you can squeeze into them, my love. Now change quickly while I help Hongjoong with his new costume.” You said, pushing the smaller boy out as you closed the door behind you.
After fumbling with the other boy’s pants for a few minutes, (omfg that sentence did not come out right hjsjshdkhs) Seonghwa joined you two in the bathroom biting back a laugh as he looked over Hongjoong.
A large white bed sheet and a pair of Seonghwa’s white pants now adorned his body along with a thick velvet pink choker you had worn a few times that matched a dress you owned, and to top it all off, two small bathroom towels tied to his hair with your hair bands.
All Hongjoong could do was glare at the taller male, as he stood letting you adjust the costume around him. “I let you dress me as the dog to help your relationship, I just want you both to know that you owe me your lives.” You smiled as you placed the red clown nose that you had draw a jack-o-lantern face on, on his nose.
“Zero is the best character in the entire movie, it’s not that bad.” You laughed, clapping your hands together. “Anyways, now we can go!”
--------
As you three exited your car to meet up with your friends, you looked over the two boys standing in front of you, Seonghwa’s pants looking more like high waters and Hongjoong’s cuffed nearly three times over to reach his ankle. “Can I ask you guys something?” You smirked as they looked back at you expectantly.
“How does it feel to be wearing each other’s pants?” You laughed, tears nearly ruining your face paint as you dodged Hongjoong’s bedsheet clad arms that were swatting at you playfully.
Once you found your friends you all got in line together, you rested your head on Seonghwa’s arm as you waited, the feeling of having your boyfriend next to you tonight made you feel so happy and the feeling of you in Seonghwa’s arms made him even happier. The entire haunted house was exactly what you had expected. You nearly threw yourself into Seonghwa’s chest every time a zombie got too close to you. Your boyfriend on the other hand practically laughed throughout the entire thing, finding the setups and actors to be quite amusing.
As you walked back to your vehicles Hongjoong told you he was going to ride with your other friends to another haunted house if you two wanted to join but you declined, Seonghwa looking at you confused as you waved bye to your friends getting into your car instead.
“Love, why did you say no?” He asked, hoping he hadn’t ruined your night.
“Because, I want to spend tonight and Halloween night with my boyfriend... If he wants to...” You said your eyes moving to look at him slowly.
“O..Oh, of course I do! But, I don’t want you to miss out on anything with your-”
“I’m not missing out on anything.” You interrupted him. “I wanted to spend Halloween with you and that’s what we’re going to do. We can go home and watch scary movies while we make snacks and I can listen to you rant about the dumb characters and their bad choices.” You suggested as you two pulled out of the parking lot.
“Maybe we can even carve some pumpkins.” Seonghwa added making you giggle as he smiled at you, his gaze focusing back on the road as he drove you two home.
-------------------
the scariest part about this story is that seonghwa is driving yall home and he doesn’t even have a driver’s license

6000 years is slow enough
A little Incorrect Good Omens inspired by a few lines of writing prompt
It was easy to forget sometimes how adorably limited humans could be. One simple misstep and they got all uptight and upset. Now the Police had arrived and they were so excitable, but honestly, it was only a small fire and it was an accident.
Crowley rolled his eyes to Aziraphale. “Have you ever been handcuffed before?” he asked, forgetting conveniently the whole manacles in revolutionary France business because obviously, that did not count. His angel was far too innocent to get into trouble deliberately.
“Sexually or by law enforcement?”
The question alone was enough to make Crowley pause. Surely Aziraphale did not mean that.
“To be honest, I’ve been both. Although I'm not entirely sure which was which. The Policeman was a lovely chap, he runs a bakery now, I get a free cream cake every Tuesday.”
“Nnk.” Unable even articulate a single coherent thought, there was nothing sensible Crowley could say. By the time he was able to pull his mind into order, Aziraphale was talking pleasantly to the officer pressing him against the brick wall.
“Dear boy, please, this jacket it irreplaceable and I’d rather not have it damaged.”
“Name.”
“Fell. Mr Azira Fell.”
The officer paused halfway through putting on the handcuffs.
“Mr Fell? From the bookshop?”
“The very same.”
“Old Butty Bob’s special friend?”
“Ah,” Aziraphale smiled. “Bob, he’s such a wonderful fellow, very skilled hands.”
Crowley made a strange noise as he nearly swallowed his own tongue.
“His cake decoration is spectacular, and have you sampled his fudge brownies? Take my word for it, they are divine.”
The officer stepped back, putting the handcuffs away. “I’m so sorry, Mr Fell, this has to be mistaken identity, there’s no way you could have had anything to do with this. Bob brings a tray of cakes into the nick every weekend and if he found out I’d arrested you I’d never get another glazed doughnut. He’s always talking about how you saved him from police work and helped set him up with the bakery. Is this man with you?”
Aziraphale glanced across to the silent demon. “Yes, for my sins.”
There was little fuss as Crowley’s handcuffs were removed.
“Do you need a lift home or anything?” the officer was clearly worried about something.
“No, we’re fine, it’s a lovely night for a walk.”
“Right. Mind how you go.” he turned to walk back to the Police car, but turned back abruptly. “If you see Bob, I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t say anything about this, I don’t want him to think-”
“If I do mention you, I’m sure you know about it, you might even get an extra doughnut. You’re a splendid young man, I’m sure you’ll go far.”
The officer’s cheeks were red as he turned away.
“What the hell was that about?” Crowley demanded, his walk bouncy and uncoordinated beside the angel’s sedate glide.
“I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I go too fast but, no, handcuffs aren’t a problem. How can an angel know anything about the sexual use of handcuffs? You run a bookshop.”
Aziraphale allowed himself a smug little smile. “Precisely. I run a respectable bookshop so I won’t allow any second rate smut like that 50 shades nonsense on the shelves, but I do have some splendid early editions of the Kama Sutra. The illustrations are quite marvelous.”
Crowley could not stop staring, almost tripping over as he forgot himself and tried to slither away in his embarrassment.
Knowing precisely what he was doing to his demon friend, Aziraphale smiled sweetly. “We could peruse them over a bottle or two of wine if you’d like.”
“Ssss.” Crowley managed.
“Standards.” Aziraphale tutted softly.
Crowley trailed behind helplessly as they made their way through the busy evening streets to the bookshop, his yellow eyes never leaving the infuriating angel daintily sliding through the crowds.
The shop door was locked behind them, there was no need for customers who only made a mess and got in the way.
“Wine?”
“And a book?” Crowley hissed the question. He was not angry, he simply too confused to not revert to his natural state of being.
“If you’d rather not I’m sure I can remember it well enough.”
Once again, Crowley was frozen in place. He could barely believe this was his angel talking and he wondered if he was hallucinating or dreaming.
“I have lived in Soho for some time now, one does learn a thing or two.” Aziraphale was pouring wine as he spoke. “And I do think, perhaps, six thousand years is slow enough. Don’t you?” the question was asked as a glass was offered up.
“Angel, you’re a bastard.”
“Thank you, dear.”

lyra and john for the ship ask?
thank you lovely! 💕
Tumblr media
GENERAL
rate the ship awful | ew | no pics pls | i’m not comfortable | alright | i like it! | got pics? | let’s do it! | why is this not getting more attention?! | the otp to rule all other otps
how long will they last? as long as some part of either of them exists tbh
how quickly did/will they fall in love? when i say they have no chill and lyra moved into the ranch after living in hope county for two weeks i mean it
how was their first kiss? john’s nose bled, next question
WEDDING
who proposed? technically john. sort of. ( i’m sorry for this long answer but i haven’t really discussed it so ) lyra had already joined the project, lived with john, begun her training with jacob, and had taken up the rudimentary form of what would eventually become her role as the judge. it had only been a few months, but joseph believed he recognized her from his visions and wanted to bring her into the family Officially; at this point john and lyra were already 100% in it and he was straight up like if she’s going to become a seed it’s going to be through me, because, well, john. lyra just looked at him when he came to her with it and said “what of it? are you not my husband? am i not your wife?” and that was that; lyra doesn’t live by half-measures, she was married in every way that mattered to her the second she stepped across that threshold with her bags. ( well. shaggy carried the bags. but you get it. )
who is the best man/men? no one, but if you listened carefully you could hear shaggy sobbing outside the church. is he happy for them or crushed by the revelation he’s really stuck with both of them forever now? who can say!
who is the bride’s maid(s)? no one; faith was Not pleased when she heard lyra had gone and married her brother without telling her ( but it would have been her, if they’d had attendees. )
who did the most planning? there wasn’t much, but john ( and joseph, i suppose, since he officiated. )
who stressed the most? the only one who had any amount of stress was john.
how fancy was the ceremony? back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 ( i’ve been informed inflation adjustment was necessary by virtue of lyra’s aura ) | 4 | normal church wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big.
who was specifically not invited to the wedding? everyone, with the exception of joseph by necessity; while the significance of the two most extra drama fiends to ever step into the valley having the most understated ceremony in existence could be elaborated on with sentimentality — they can come as they are with each other, etc etc — it was partly a tactical move; lyra couldn’t fairly well maintain her cover with the locals if she publicly married john seed in an elaborate ceremony. they intend to have one officially in the new eden with all of the family and faithful; they never get that chance.
SEX
who is on top? either/or tbh
who is the one to instigate things? either/or
how healthy is their sex life? barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | once a couple weeks, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | they are humping each other on the couch right now
how kinky are they? straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head ( no horse head necessary in the sex dungeon. just kidding. they don’t have a sex dungeon they just hook up in the normal torture one )
how long do they normally last? before everything went to hell, as long as they want ( rip, get the ice packs ); after the reaping begins, as long as they have
do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? okay listen i’m going to be brutally honest, they fuck a lot, they’re not counting but they’re not complaining
how rough are they in bed? softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | the bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make dwayne johnson blush. also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it. ( their walls are premium )
how much cuddling/snuggling do they do? no touching after sex | 2 | 3 | 4 | a little spooning at night, or on the couch, but not in public | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | they snuggle and kiss more often than a teen couple on their fifth date to a pillow factory. ( lyra is actually the biggest offender but she blames his needy ass. also if she knows you know this she’ll commit homicide. this is not hyperbole )
CHILDREN
how many children will they have naturally? none. ( in aus they do; one in the cult wins verse because lyra’s iud expired but she was not willing to sacrifice her sex life, and fairbrookseed have three; the twins via wes and a younger son via john. )
how many children will they adopt? three at the beginning of the reaping — boomer, peaches & cheeseburger. ( john unwilling. )
who gets stuck with the most diapers? not applicable, but hypothetically shaggy
who is the stricter parent? it would have been john
who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? it would have been john; lyra would have taught them the dangerous stunts they’re doing after school
who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? it would have been shaggy
who is the more loved parent? the furbabies love lyra more. obviously.
who is more likely to attend the pta meetings? it wOULD HAVE BEEN JOHN
who cried the most at graduation? same answer; lyra would have waited until they got home and then cried in the shower for an hour
who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? either/both, but in practice probably john
COOKING
who does the most cooking? neither/shaggy; lyra if you count her Attempts when she staggers in at 3am after hunting sinners or gathering intel at the spread eagle
who is the most picky in their food choice? john; lyra behaves like she is but in fact thinks it will be a shame when casey’s non-testicle related recipes are lost when he burns in the collapse
who does the grocery shopping? neither; lyra’s the most likely to bring things back from town, but it’s usually liquor she swiped from the bar ( so that mary may can’t sell it, of course! )
how often do they bake desserts? they don’t bake
are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? whatever shaggy puts in front of them; it’s probably meat and it’s probably unfortunate
who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? john, but he’s only responsible for the theatrics; everything was 100% still prepared by the flock
who is more likely to suggest going out? for the truly exceptional hope county cuisine, served in businesses they definitely didn’t try to get shut down, in which they are most definitely both still welcome and could appear together without blowing her cover and/or getting shot on sight? neither. in a “let’s physically go out by the fire pit” sense, lyra.
who is more likely to burn the house down accidentally while cooking? honestly, both of them, because in the event they were cooking one of them probably decided to be distracting~ while they waited~ and oh no they forgot about it oh no everything’s on fire oh no shaggy put it out oh no shaggy how could you let this happen
CHORES
who cleans the room? shaggy
who is really against chores? both to an extent, but especially lyra
who cleans up after the pets? neither, but since john philosophically opposes their presence in the first place and tries to ship them off to jacob every tuesday, it sure as hell ain’t him
who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? if, inexplicably, they’re sweeping, it’s lyra, both proverbially and literally
who stresses the most when guests are coming over? if the guest is joseph ( or even jacob ), JOHN. otherwise they’re unconcerned.
who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? a dollar? one (1) dollar? john keeps literal stacks of thousands of dollars in cash just sitting around. the answer is hopefully not the resistance.
MISC
who takes the longer showers/baths? john ( but lyra usually joins. )
who takes the dog out for a walk? shaggy, boomer has almost taken his leg off on fifty separate occasions. ( it’s lyra. )
how often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? canonically they never have the opportunity, really, but lyra probably would have decorated for the winter holidays. some mistletoe on the antlers, a garland on that sinner corpse hanging out by the porch. beautiful.
what are their goals for the relationship? to make it to new eden, tbh. they found unconditional love in each other when that was an impossibility for them for most of their lives; they just want to keep what they have and prove themselves worthy.
who is most likely to sleep till noon? JOHN. lyra’s up before dawn every day ( and drags him out of bed to watch the sunrise with her; he’s very excited for the apocalypse. )
who plays the most pranks? pranks? lyra, but not the funny sort, it’s like...whoops, sorry, i forgot to mention i was roasting sinners out back, the grounds will smell like burning flesh for a bit! did you bring home any flayed skin today? <3 ( i jest, it’s more to the effect of “the sinners were terribly dull today so to amuse myself i told them i heard rumors about the judge and the reason they didn’t know you had a wife is because you kept her locked in a sex dungeon. also, adelaide wants you to spank her. how went the confessions?” )

hello!!! i missed talk shop tuesday but im assuming i can still come to chat :)
How long have you been a 1975 fan and when did you decide to become a fic writer for the fandom?
most played 1975 song of all time?
if you could choose any artist for a musical collaboration who would you want?
and lastly, just for fun what is your hottest take just in general not necessarily about the fandom?
You are ALWAYS welcome to come chat!! My inbox is ALWAYS open and I get so ridiculously excited that people even want to chat with me so THANK YOU!
I've been a fan of The 1975 for too long at this point 😂 I discovered them during the self titled era via Tumblr / Chocolate being played on the radio my senior year of high school. I thought Matty was super hot 😂 I actually still have the promotional Twitter DMs that they sent out during the ILIWYS era saved on my account because looking at them makes me laugh - wow have we come so far! (I also distinctly remember watching them on SNL the first time and the TRSMT festival performance with my college roommate and her being like whoa he is not okay) HOWEVER, I didn't get involved in the fic writing side of the Fandom until last year. I had done some lurking on AO3 over the years, but never fully committed to it. Then BFIAFL came out and holy crap did that album just like totally consume me, it also lined up with my life totally falling apart and so I dove extra head long into anything to do with the boys as a little bit of an escape / distraction a good IRL friend of mine was the one who encouraged me to actually start writing my own fic and posting it / making a fic Tumblr and now here we are 😂
Probably The City - I'm not actually entirely sure because I've been listening to this band for so flipping long that I had to listen to A PHYSICAL CD IN MY FIRST CAR and also this was like prespotify for me and I had to BUY THE SONG ON iTUNES and listen to it that way. So we're talking about me trying to pull and compile data from multiple places. I do however know that was my first favorite The 1975 song and I did listen to it on repeat obsessively for a while there.
Not to be controversial but I would KILL for that scrapped Taylor / The 1975 collab - think their voices would really complement each other as would their writing styles and George's production. I don't really enjoy a lot of the Taylor stuff that's been happening lately because as a football fan I hate Travis Kelce, and I hate how her fans treated Matty last spring and I don't want him to have to go through that again but WOW I feel like a song between them would be incredible.
Hottest take in general? Hmmm I am a wealth of hot takes... honestly my instinct was to say that I fucking hate bean sprouts they are little strings of evil but I think that's just because I got dinner with some friends tonight and I forgot to say no beansprouts in my pad thai and was just like traumatized by the pile of them on top. They all laughed at me because my hatred of bean sprouts is very well known. I'm sorry that's a very lame hot take. OH ALSO NOT ALL FUCKING HORSES CAN BE BAREFOOT AND NOT ALL HORSES SHOULD BE BAREFOOT REGARDLESS OF WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA WARRIORS SAY. I FUCKING WISH POP COULD BE BAREFOOT IT WOULD SAVE ME SO MUCH MONEY BUT ALAS HE LIKES HAVING PIECES OF STEEL NAILED TO HIS FEET EVERY FIVE WEEKS.
Thank you so much for sending this in!! Getting to chat and ramble on was so exciting!! Thank you so much! I hope you had a wonderful day and that you have the best rest of your week!
❤️Ally

Yandere prompt 21 with Kakyoin please?
Welp I just want to say before we start that the Yakuza scam that is mentioned is actually a true story that my Japanese teacher told the class about as a warning about all of the corruption that happens in Tokyo.
Anyway here's the fic
Foreign treasure
(Yandere Kakyoin X Female Reader)
Kakyoin couldn't help but stare at the new exchange student, her name was (Y/n) (L/n). He couldn't help but lose focus in his classes as he looked at her. Her soft (h/c) hair, her stunning (E/C) eyes that gleamed in the sun like jewels. She truely was a foreign treasure.
He wanted her to know he existed but was to shy to even give direct eye contact, little more actually speak to her.
🍒🍒🍒
"That'll be 1500 yen" the shop clerk said. Kakyoin looked through his wallet and picked out the notes and coins in his hand. 1155 yen, it wasn't enough to pay for his lunch and drink. He felt embarrassed and he didn't know what to say until a hand grazed against his as they placed a 1000 yen note in his hand.
"You can keep the change" a familiar soft voice said. He looked to his side to see the familiar (h/c)ed female, giving him a smile that was possibly sweeter then any candy.
"Uh... O, thanks" he stuttered in embarrassment.
"No problem, sorry if I scared you" she said as her smile grew.
"No you didn't" he said as he handed the clerk the money and grabbed the plastic bag.
"Your name's Kakyoin, right?" She asked him.
"Y... Yes" he stuttered.
"Well I'm (Y/n)" she said as she took his hand and shook it.
His heart skipped a beat as he felt her holding his hand and the butterflies grew in his stomach.
"Everytime I've seen that you've always been alone, what's up with that?" She asked as they both walked out.
"I just think that it's more important to study then socialise" he lied.
"Oh, I just thought you might've of been lonely..." You sighed.
"Thou that's nothing to be ashamed of, back in my country I'm pretty lonely at school" she said to him.
"It's so much nicer here. Everything's cleaner, the streets the houses, even the people" she said.
"Oh I'm sorry... I must rambling" she apologized.
"No, no it's perfectly fine, I enjoy listening to y- people" he said avoiding to say you to not sound creepy but it was the truth, he did enjoy listening to you. On many occasions he had used his stand to possess others just so he could hear her voice. He had even used a possessed to stalk you, but to his misfortune she had caught him and ran off too quickly for him to follow.
"What are you listening to?" He asked as he saw her headphones that were plugged into a cassette player, he could hear the tune ever so faintly.
"Oh... I'm not sure if you know him... Then again you Japanese sure do have a love of western music" she replied.
"Even if I don't I'm sure he's great"
"Well if you must know... I'm listening to Sting" she said. His eyes light up with suprise.
"You like Sting, He's my favourite musician" he said, trying so desperately to his his joy. Him and her were so much alike, he just knew that she had to have some feeling for him.
Over the weeks he seemed so much brighter, every week day he jumped out of bed excited to see you once more but one day you had to leave, this was only a exchange program. You had to go back.
"(Y/n) I just wanted to give you something before you go!" He yelled as he tried to catch up to catch up to her as he held an envelope in his hand.
"Yes?" She asked as she stopped.
"Here" he said as he put the envelope in her hand.
"Don't open it now, but please reply when you get back" he asked her.
"Of course" she said.
But she never did...
🍒🍒🍒
Several years had passed and the year was 1996 and the world was a different place, especially after the crusaders back in 85. They had all gone their separate ways. Polnareff had gone back to France, Joseph had gone back to America, Jotaro had left Japan shortly after graduating and was now a marine biologist as well as a husband and father.
And Kakyoin... He had decided that he would just stay in Japan and live a normal, quiet life. He had a office job in the heart of Tokyo, occasionally doing a bit of painting but over all the years he never forgot about the (h/C) haired female, he still had some delusional hope that he may one day get a response. He still remembered what he had written. A confession, a declaration and a promise of love for her.
🍒🍒🍒
It was like every Tuesday night. He was heading back to his apartment through a park when he saw two small children, a boy and girl around 5 and 7 playing around, he could tell they were foreigners.
One accidentally bumped into him and apologized before a woman ran towards them.
"I'm so sorry about that sir" a familiar voice said.
He felt the butterflies that had once been in his stomach as he saw her.
"(Y/n)..." Was all that came out of his mouth. The lady looked into his eyes. God he didn't think she could have gotten anymore beautiful but he had been proven wrong, she had aged so well.
"Kakyoin..." She softly replied before hugging him.
"God Kakyoin, it sure is a small world we live in" she said.
"Mommy who's this" the little girl asked. He felt his insides twist as he heard her say Mommy, had you really just forgotten him and just gotten with someone else.
"Oh he's a friend I made while I studied here years ago" she explained.
"Could you guys go on the play over there, I want to talk with with Kakyoin, if that's ok with you?" She said as she sat down on the small garden wall.
"Yes that's ok, I don't have any plans" he said as he sat next to her. The two children the ran around the park but always kept in her view.
"Wow I really can't believe you became a mother, where's the lucky man?" he sighed, he was truly horrified by this discovery.
"It's a long story" she sighed.
"I don't mind a long story" he said pulling a slightly amused voice in attempt to cheer you up.
"Well Paige and Matthew are actually my niece and nephew but their parents were involved in a horrific car crash, their father died instantly and their mother wasn't recovering in hospital. She knew that she wasn't going to make it... A few hours later she passed away as well, she told me she only wanted me to adopt them before she did, so for her dying wish I did, I've never been able to land a guy since then because let's be honest who wants to hustle with a single mom" she said before letting out a chuckle at the end. Relief washed over him,  she hadn't settled down. He still had hope.
She look at the time before telling him she needed to get the kids back to her friend's house that she was staying at before giving him her number.
"If your free maybe I could take you to a bar on Friday? I just really want some more time to catch up" he said.
"Sure, I think that could work, I could have the kids stay home with Natsuko and her kids" she replied.
"Then it's settled"
🍒🍒🍒
"Is this the place?" she asked.
"Yes" he replied as he brought her into the small bar, it wasn't much and it didn't have a lot of patrons either but that's what he liked about it. She took a seat before waving the bartender over.
"Could I please order a long island iced tea?" She asked which the bartender nodded.
"That's pretty strong..." He remarked as he sat next to her.
"Yeah, but it's nice" she replied.
"And I'd like a Cherry buzz" he said.
"Cherry buzz? I've never heard of a cocktail like that" she said.
"Yeah it's one of this bars signature drinks. Cherry brandy, milk, and a shot of coffee. I know it's not the manliest of drinks but I enjoy it" he explained.
"So tell me what you done with your life besides becoming an instant mother?" He asked her before the bartender handed them their drinks.
"Well prior to being a mom wasn't much, I had boring job as a waitress but awhile after adopting Paige and Matthew I decided to become a children's book writer and illustrator. That's actually one of the reasons I came back to Japan, to get some inspiration for a new book and also to show the kids how great this place is" she explained before taking a sip.
"Wow that great to hear" he said.
"But I will warn you that Tokyo is very different to the rest of Japan, the Yakuza have their firm grip over it and target foreigners often, even I got scammed by them once" he continued.
"Really how?"
"It's kind of embarrassing, shortly after moving into Tokyo I went to a bar to get something to drink, a few ladies asked if they could sit by me and I said yes... Turns out the bar was linked to a nearby brothel and they were prostitutes... I hadn't done anything with them but the bar charged me an absurd amount for them because I'd had a few conversations with them. They wouldn't let me leave until I paid up" he explained before sipping his drink.
"Wow it's pretty scary how easily it can happen" she replied.
"Yeah" he lightly chuckled.
"Hey could I ask you something?" She asked.
"Sure, go ahead"
"What happened to you eyes?"
"oh just some unfriendly locals in Egypt"
The night went on and on and on, she kept saying she'd stop drinking but Kakyoin would insist here to have another one and told her he'd pay until she was buzzed up enough.
He sighed as he could feel her arms wrap around him, her mobility wasn't the best and she was nearly staggering. He completely relished in the fact that he was the one she was relying on.
"(Y/n) I'll take you home, it's to dangerous for you to walk by yourself" he cooed as he tangled his fingers in her soft locks while walking her through the city until she spoke up.
"We were supposed to make a left turn..." She muttered, a sliver of worry in her voice.
"I'm taking you back to mine, I'm sure Natsuko will understand that you just got a little bit too drunk" he said.
Despite the seeming kind act that Kakyoin was displaying she couldn't help but have that gut feeling telling her something was up.
"No no, I want to go back to her's please I know it's a little extra to walk but I'd just feel a bit safer there" she said but he ignored her and continued to follow his intended path until she began to struggle.
He quickly used his stand to control her. Her body pressed against his own as he finally got into his apartment. She muttered loving nothing to him and told him how much she loved him, but just using his stand to make her say it wasn't enough... He wanted her to say them honestly to him.
He lauded her on the small couch before locking the door. Then he released her from his possession.
She looked at him in fear as she realised what happened.
"Y...you, what did you do to me?" She stuttered.
"I knew you would try to run at some stage if I didn't, you should have no reason to be afraid of me but you seem to believe there is" he said as he approached the female who stood up. As he tried to embrace her she pushed him away.
"Leave me alone!" She screamed.
"(Y/n) calm down your drunkenness is effecting your mind" he explained as he tried to approach her again but I was becoming a repeating cycle of being pushed away. Eventually he grew sick and tired of this stupid game of back and forward.
Her body stiffened and moved unnaturally, like she was struggling against restraints. She couldn't see the cause but he could.
"Why?! Why are you-?!" She yelled before another of limb of his stand covered her mouth.
"(Y/n) I missed you so much after you left... I've been waiting for all these years hoping you would reply to my letter, I can't bare the thought of you leaving me again" he said.
"All I want is you, all I've ever wanted was you... I just want you to never leave me, I don't care about the fact that your a mother... I just want you to stay with me forever" he explained, almost as if he was on the verge of tears but his face did not reflect that sadness in his voice, the blank piercing gaze on his face showed the twisted emotion that he believed was love.

I take it you like someone? If so, who do you like? Nope, you’re wrong.
Any sexual stuff happen in the past two months? Nope.
Is your phone right next to you, or at least close by? Yeah, it’s near me.
What windows are open on your computer right now? This one and YouTube.
Anything you would like to say to someone? Nah.
Last place you went besides your house? The doctor on Tuesday.
Have you ever wanted someone so bad, and then they completely stopped talking to you? Yes.
Who is the last person to call you? My mom just did to ask me about something I wanted at the store.
What was the last movie you watched? Wonder Woman 1984.
What are you doing tomorrow? Same ol’ thing.
Was 2013 a good year for you? That was the year I got super drunk and sick at my birthday and haven’t had a drop of alcohol since and also when Joseph ended things between us for good. Those are the things that stand out for me that year...
Do any of your friends dislike each other? I don’t have any friends.
Who knows your biggest secret? I don’t really have like a “big” secret.
Do you think anyone has feelings for you? Not romantic feelings, no.
Do you care if people hate you for no reason? I mean, I’d be curious as to why.
Are you in a good mood? I’m tired and annoyed. I saw there was a Fruity Pebbles creamer and as someone who loves Fruity Pebbles, I wanted to try it thinking obviously it was going to be good. Well, it was not. It was disgusting, 10/10 would NOT recommend. So disappointing. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any other creamer so I was SOL. That means I haven’t had coffee and that’s not good. Fortunately for me, my mom had to go back to the store for dinner so she’s getting me creamer. Now I’m just impatiently waiting for her to get back, ha.
Do you think ex’s can remain friends? It happens for some.
Were you single on your last birthday? Yes.
Are you starting to realize anything? Umm. Nothing new.
Are you currently looking forward to anything? I’m waiting for my mom to get back with the creamer.
Could you go a day without eating? It happens once in awhile. I have a messed up appetite and stomach issues and sometimes I don’t want to eat anything. Or when I’m really sick. I don’t often go full days without eating at least something, though.
How many bracelets do you have on your wrists right now? Zero.
What are you doing right now, besides this? That’s it.

You’re single, right? Correct.
How’s that going for you? It’s fine. Definitely for the best.
Has anyone laid on your bed besides you? Yes.
Who’s the first person you spoke to in 2014? I probably was at my friend’s house for New Year’s Eve that year.
Do you ever want to get married? No.
How was your Saturday night? It was fine.

Are there any words that you cannot pronounce or that you pronounce incorrectly? I can’t think of one at the moment.
After a long day at work or of doing something physical what tends to hurt more? Your back or your feet? After a day of doing nothing I’m in pain, so.

Who would you say is the overall best person you know, and why? My mom and brother. They just are.

When you need to remember something how do you usually go about doing so? I use my reminder or calendar app on my phone.
Have you recently accomplished anything that you are proud of yourself for? No.
Are you still friends with any of your exes? Do you still communicate with any of them at all? Nope. What is your opinion on people that shop at Sephora for makeup as opposed to buying makeup from the drugstore? I don’t care?
When you enter a store like Target or Walmart where is the first section you go? Walmart is where we do our grocery shopping and other household stuff and my mom and I have always start at the side with shampoo, soap, toothpaste, medicine, etc and work our way around to the food. As for Target, I just head straight in usually and walk around the store.
Do you live on your own or with your parents/a roommate? Do you think you'd like to live alone? I live with my parents, brother, and doggo. I have no desire to live alone.

What were you doing at 1 in the morning? Surveys and watching YouTube videos.
Are you a jealous person? I can be, but I honestly haven’t felt that in years.
What does your last text say? “Yes.”
Would you hug the last person you hugged again? Yes.
Do you like to cuddle? I don’t have much cuddling experience to be honest, but sure.
Has the last person you kissed ever made you cry? Yes.
Are you excited for anything? No.
How are you feeling right now? Tired and hungry.
What are you doing right now? Just this.
What should you be doing right now? I don’t have anything else I should be doing.
Are you worried about anything right now? Always.
Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone? My mom.
Do you have any drugs in your bedroom? I have prescription medication.
Do you know the person who's locker is next to yours? I’m not in school. I also never had a locker.
What is annoying you? Nothing really at this moment. I was annoyed about the creamer situation earlier and about not having coffee, but I’m finishing this at a later time and I’ve since had my coffee.
Do you like the color blue? Yeah.
Do you know anyone who is going through a hard time? Yeah, including myself.
Did you get to sleep in today? Well, I stayed up until 7AM so I could call my doctor first thing when they opened to cancel an appointment and then I fell asleep after that until 230PM.
Where will you be in 1 hour? Right here.
Who did you last talk to in person besides family? My doctor.
Anyone you were good friends with, that you no longer get along with? No. Like, I don’t have friends anymore but it’s not because we didn’t get along.
Has anyone let you down lately? Just myself.
Anyone you'd do anything for? My family.
What will you be doing tomorrow? My days are all the same.  Did you meet anybody new today? No.
What is your favorite TV show right now? I have many, but a new one my mom and I have gotten into is Dare Me on Netflix.
Do you make any art? I like to color. That’s about as artsy as it gets for me.
What colors go well with your eyes? *shrug*
Would you go out with somebody you just met or do you have to be friends? I like to get to know someone a little first.
Do you like any magazines in particular? I haven’t read a magazine in yearsss.

Things Change People Grow up Ch2
talk of sex
encounter with an old bully
I finally finished it even tho it’s still just ok

Tumblr media
I don’t know about you but writing makes me happy even when it’s crappy though sometimes it’s hard to write that’s why I read y’all a lot... like a lot.
Billy had gotten a job as a salesman at the local car dealership. I’ve stopped by to bring him lunch on days I had fewer classes or canceled class. I talked to his coworkers while waiting for him to wrap up a deal and it apparently was something he really excelled at. “Babe! Did your professor cancel class again?” He asked as he trotted up to me and wrapped his arms around me. He extended his arm out to a couple standing near a display car, “I’ll be right there, just give me a minute with my girl before we see about getting you into one of these fine cars.”
“It’s Finals week remember? I don’t have any today so I brought you lunch and was hoping we could talk but I can wait till you get home.” I babbled kissing his cheek and handing him the sack lunch. He placed a hand gingerly on my cheek before giving a quick peck on the lips and handing me the bag back, “Go ahead and wait in my office, we’ll eat lunch together. I still have the lunch that you packed for me this morning as you always do on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays.” Tuesdays and Thursdays were my lighter days so I could bring him lunch by riding the bus over like I did today but today was Wednesday and I only had two more tests to do tomorrow.
“Right... I forgot.”
“Do you remember where my office is?” He asks rubbing my cheek with his thumb.
“Yes, I do.” I sigh and leaned up to kiss him before we parted. I sat in his chair with one of my books sitting out in front of me on the desk. I studied as I waited for him to return.
Billy’s POV
I watched (y/n) bounce off before turning to the couple that I had waiting for me. The older woman who was waiting seemed delighted when she says, “What a lovely girl, I didn’t see a ring though.”
“No ma’am you didn’t, working on it though. I have been saving up so I can get her the ring she deserves. I have my mothers old family ring but its band is too small and when I resize it I’d like to have some modifications done first. But enough with that what are we looking for today?”
Y/N POV
As I was enraptured with my studying when I was picked up and set back down on a familiar lap. I look up to see Billy give me a charming, but apologetic smile, “I’m just going to close this deal real quick then we will have lunch. I got Twizzlers in the desk drawer if you would like to snack on that while you wait.” He asked while he dug out said Twizzlers.
“Mmmm Yeees!” I sang happily.
He gave me the Twizzlers before proceeding to close the deal he was in for another thirty-five minutes. He only picked me up so he could properly shake their hands and walk them out.
“Now baby, you ready for some lunch?” He hummed as he shut his office door.
I quickly put away my books and snagged the two lunches I had originally made for him and set them out before us.
He sat across from me where I sat, in the client's chair while I sat in his usual chair. He took a bite out of his sandwich before he asked, “So what was it you wanted to talk about?”
“Christmas break... My mom said you could stay in the guest room.” I state eating my own sandwich.
“Oh? Does she know about you and I are living together?”
“No, but you did fall asleep after thanksgiving on the couch and you know how much my mom loves you.”
He shook his head, “No honey, she loves that I’m dating you not me.”
I sigh, “True enough but if you stay in the guest room you won’t be alone for the holidays.”
“Babe...I swear I’ll drive over for Christmas, I’ll even spend the night before I head back, but I have work and I... I’m going to move into my own place. No more mooching.” He says eating the rest of his sandwich.
“You’re not mooching, you pay for the heating bill and all the food.” I pouted.
“Come on babe, I’ll just be in a house near the dealership and you’ll see me plenty.” He chuckled leaning in to kiss my temple. “Now you can have your parents over without them red-flagging my stuff.”
“But I’ll miss snuggling with you at night. and My classload is going to be crazy.” We shared a chuckle but we quickly changed the subject.
My Dad ended coming over to surprise me and take me home and on Christmas Billy had come down to join us for Christmas family dinner.
We were all eating and joking around. Billy who sat beside me suddenly stood up. “(y/n) you are the smartest, and strongest woman I know. I know we’ve only been going steady for a short while, but you’ve made me so happy and I want to do the same for you for the rest of our lives. (y/full/n),” He got down onto one knee and then pulled out a familiar box... the box that held his mothers ring, though the ring inside looked different. “Will you make me the happiest man for the rest of my life so that I can hopefully do the same for you.”
Mother’s squeals could be heard from behind me, and the look on Billy’s face was one of pure love my voice seemed lost, so I simply leaned down and smashed my lips against his. He reached a hand up and into my hair to deepen the kiss before pulling apart to give me a soft smile, “Tell me that was a yes.”
“Yes.” I breathed before smashing my lips into his once again.
... After returning to school I ended up finding a sub-leaser so I could move in with Billy in the house he bought for us. We planned to marry in the following summer.
I am back in school now with extra coarsest trying to get through my degree faster. I plan on taking summer courses too.
I am super busy and only see Billy at night and some weekend days. Billy works a lot now trying to help pay for my coarse load. My parents are still paying but Billy wants to help ease the weight. I wish I could work to help too but I have always taken a big coarse load only now I am taking as many as they will allow. I am struggling to keep up but I really want to be graduated by the time we marry. Billy tells me he is fine with whatever I decide with school he will make it work but he shouldn’t have to work so hard to provide for me. I want to help... he is such a giver now and I just want to give back.
“Babe, come to bed you’ve been studying for hours. You need a good nights sleep before you take that test.” He called as he plopped under the covers of our shared bed.
“I can’t... I will in an hour I swear. It’s the last test I need to study for. I’ll turn off the light and go into the other room so you can get some sleep.” I hummed tiredly.
He yawned “No baby you will be fine just come to bed, you look exhausted. Please come snuggle with me it’s been a long day for both of us. This is the only time I get to see you please.”
I finally gave in and get into bed, “Goodnight Billy...I love you.”
“I love you too baby doll.” He mumbled as he fell asleep.
... it’s hard to be away studying all the time which is why I decided to truly take spring break for a break and spend it with Billy.
“Baby girl what do you want to do with today?” Billy asked giving me a hug from behind as I made us breakfast for the first time since before the semester really started.
I conformed myself into him enjoying the feeling of being wrapped up in his arms.
“I just want to be with you, my love. I just want you to know just how much I love you.”
“I love you too. But do you want to drive down to Indianapolis for a few days and play around a little, see a movie, check out some potential venues for the wedding while we are at it? We’ll get a hotel and maybe visit Dave who moved down to Indy after we graduated.”
Dave was friends with Billy when they were in school but he was someone I had avoided. But then again I had avoided Billy then too but here we are engaged. So I gave him a smile “Okay let’s do it then.” I turned in his arms and hug him leaning up for a passionate kiss.
“Awesome I’ll call Dave and ask for a recommendation for a hotel.” He called Dave I plated and set up the table.
I sat at the table waiting for him to return before eating and he returned “Great news! Dave said there’s a good place near his apparent and would be happy to help us shop venues tomorrow. Do you want to drive down now or tomorrow?”
“Uh how about we pack after we eat and then decide after that huh?” I chuckled.
...
The drive down to Indy was a little over an hour. Some of the time we spent singing along to the radio together, “Billy?”
“Hmm... love?” He glanced at me before returning his eyes on the road.
“So... what kind of place were you wanting to get married.”
“I don’t know where you want to get married.”
“Oh no I asked first and you were the one who brought up venue shopping.” I giggled.
He let out a sighed, “Somewhere near the water... I miss California... I’m not saying I want to go back, your family is here... But I’d like to be near the water on our big day.”
“Billy!” I gasped, “That’s so beautiful. Let’s look into that. We should check out some museums, and maybe the Indiana Central Canal. The Canal is supposed to be quite beautiful. There are some other places we can look at too.”
He smirked, “Your cute when you get excited.”
“Really? You think I’m cute?” I hummed happily.
“I asked YOU to marry me remember?” He playfully messed my hair up.
We arrived and checked into the hotel, “Ok, so the things to do today Dave has suggested a few things. There’s the Indiana Art museum with the 100 Acre Woods. There’s the Indiana Zoo. We can swim in the hotel pool. What kind of activity are we feeling like my love.” He hummed as he brought me into his arms swaying us back and forth.
“Hmm... I think it would be nice to go see some art and then see the woods. It would make a nice day.” I chime as I give him a squeeze.
“Alright let’s ask the front desk for directions and then head over.”
We spent the whole day walking around the halls and in the gardens. I was so beautiful. It made the wedding venue possibility list.
Tomorrow came around and though awkward it was okay at first. We went to see the canal which Billy seemed to agree that he would like getting married there, then to the memorials and ending at a lake and clubhouse that would be also a lovely place to marry. When we went to dinner, that’s where the problems started. I was coming back from the bathroom when I caught part of there conversation. “What do you mean the two of you haven’t fucked?” Dave scoffed.  “The only reason to be with a girl that looks like that is if she’s a really good lay.” Now let me explain, we’ve shared a bed but with Billy being so experienced and I with well nothing because he’s the only person I have been with... anyway I never approached the subject and he never pushed.
“Dave... Don’t be an ass. She’s my girl and she’s beautiful ... I know what I said in high school and... oh, hey baby uh... I hope you don’t mind but I ordered for you.” He rambled nervously.
I kissed his temple before sitting beside him, “Oh? What did you order?”
“(your favorite pop and food) that’s what you would have wanted right?” He asked giving me a quick peck.
“Yeah, that’s right. So... What do you think? We going to get married at the canal or we still looking tomorrow?” I asked kissing at his nose as if the extra display of affection would mark my territory.
“We can talk about that tonight. Okay?” He smiled again nervously.
Later at the hotel, I ducked into the bathroom saying that I needed a shower. I stood under the water thinking about what I heard. Was he unhappy with me not giving it up yet? Did he feel neglected of his needs and wants? Should I just come out him forthright? A candid conversation about what he needed and what he could wait for after marriage...
A soft knock came from the door followed by Billy’s soft voice “Princess? Are you alright? You’ve been in there for quite some time.”
I took a breath and answered, “Billy come in... we need to talk and I’m not ready to get out.”
He slowly and hesitantly opened the door and sat on the toilet. “Alright love what do you have on your mind?”
“Does it bother you that we haven’t had sex yet?” I stuttered out.
“So you did hear our conversation.”  Even with the water going I could hear his leg shaking.
“Yeah, I did,”
“Well... I don’t mind that we don’t have sex if you’re not ready... doesn’t mean I don’t still want to... I just take care of it on my own.”
“Billy... I love you so much. So, So much. But...”
“You’re not ready, and that’s alright... I’m alright with that.”
I stuck my head out, “Billy?”
“Yeah?” His eyes wandered over what skin wasn’t hidden by the blurred door.
“Tomorrow... let's just elope.” I reached for him and he moved so my palm could perch on his cheek and pull him in for a kiss.
When we pull away, he hummed, “You really do have great breast.”

Chapters: 1
-----------
Percy hadn’t dressed for a date in a very long time.
In fact, when he thought about it, he didn’t think he ever had. He’d only ever had one relationship, back at boarding school, and he’d only had two outfit choices back then. School uniform or rugby kit. Somehow he didn’t think he’d still be able to pull that off at thirty.
He rifled through his wardrobe one more time, metal clacking reproachfully with each poor offering. Too boring…too stuffy…oil stains…oil stains…ripped…
With a noise of frustration he hiked his bath towel further up his hips, it had started to slip. The only clothes he seemed to own were either designed for a mansion’s ballroom or not fit to be seen outside his workshop. Maybe he had time to go into town and pick something new but even then, what sort of thing should he get?
Percy ran a hand through his hair. He probably wasn’t supposed to be thinking like this. This wasn’t a real date, it was a service. Why was he so concerned with looking good for Vax’ildan, when the half elf likely thought of this as work rather than anything recreational?
“This whole thing was supposed to help you relax a little,” he grumbled at his reflection, half visible in the full length mirror that hung on the back of the door, “Not stress you out more.”
His reflection didn’t seem to have an answer for that. It just stared back at him, eyes large and owlish without his glasses, hair sticking up after the shower. Living off takeaway food whenever he actually remembered he needed to eat clearly wasn’t doing him a lot of favours; where he wasn’t rail thin he was more round than he wanted to be. He was a very unhealthy kind of pale, everywhere except the very ill thought out tattoos he’d gotten when he was younger.
In short, he looked like no one’s dream date.
Part of Percy wanted so desperately to turn off the lights and crawl back under his blankets. Or maybe go to his workshop- the larger room in his penthouse that was really supposed to be the master bedroom- and lose himself in cogs and wires and screws. There would always be an answer there. There was always a way to make things fit, a solution he understood. He’d find no such certainty out there, stumbling awkwardly through a facsimile of a relationship.
That part of him was dangerously close to winning when he turned and saw his laptop, a sleek and black machine on his sleek and black sheets, still open, it’s glow reproving and impatient. Percy’s email was still open, the cursor blinking away on the still stubbornly blank message.
Cassandra had emailed him two days ago now. A short and to the point email, appearing cold to anyone who didn’t know his sister but Percy knew how to read the concern in those few words, asking how her brother was, what he was up to. He knew the words that weren’t written as plainly but were there nonetheless. I’m worried about you. Please tell me you’re at least a little bit okay.
She was halfway across the country now, studying at a good university though Percy could picture the horror on his father’s face if he ever heard his only remaining daughter had wandered outside of the Ivy League. But Cassandra hadn’t been concerned about prestige. She’d wanted distance.
She’d run from their parent’s city as quickly as Percy had become welded to it.
He hadn’t replied yet, hence the empty page. Because what the fuck was he supposed to say?
Hi Cassie, glad to hear you’re doing well and achieving all your dreams and making me so proud even though I’m too much of an emotionally constipated arse to show it. I’ve done absolutely nothing since you left, short of skipping counselling, talking to screwdrivers more than living things, moving like a robot through the activities I think our parents would want me to do and haunting our father’s penthouse like some depraved Phantom of the Opera. Keyleth’s still around though, I continue to be a shitty friend to her. Lots of love, your worthless brother.
Percy groaned and pinched the bridge of his nose, where there were always two perfect red indentations from his glasses.
Admittedly, hiring someone to have sex and play romance with you wasn’t the sort of thing that he was going to put in an email to his sister. But he’d be able to say he’d left the house. He was meeting new people. He was doing things.
He’d be able to say he was getting a little closer to being okay.
Decisively, Percy closed his laptop but reached for his phone, lying on the nightstand where it had woken him up a full five hours before his date. It took less than two minutes to send a text to Keyleth.
Want to go shopping with me? Need a date outfit.
Vax woke up, as he often did, with a mouthful of fur.
“Urgh,” he groaned, shoving against the great weight on his chest, “Trinket, get off, you’re disgusting.”
Of course it didn’t come out as coherent as that, seeing as his brain wasn’t fully awake. But that was what he’d intended to say.
The large dog whined, not enjoying being evicted from the nice warm bed, landing on the floor with a thump after a dedicated shove from Vax. Neither of them were sure what kind of dog the enormous, dark brown ball of fluff was but all he knew was that he was a hell of a lot bigger than the shelter and his sister had promised he’d be.
“Don’t be mean to my dog!” his sister yelled from the next room, hearing the thump.
“Then tell your horse to stop smothering me in my sleep! If you’re going to try and assassinate me, be a little more creative,” Vax shot back, though he was frowning. His sister was still here? What time was it?
He clawed around for his phone, eventually plucking it from his many blankets, though not until he’d come up with a lipstick, a sock and a chewed up tennis ball. According to the screen, still perfectly functioning even with the hairline crack through it, it was nearly eleven.
Not bad for Vax’ildan. He’d been averaging noon the last few weeks.
Still on his screen were the messages he’d been exchanging with Percy last night. Though it didn’t say Percy on the text windows, he’d decided to keep the name Orthax in a fit of romanticism and intrigue, with an emoji of a red flower beside it. It was very much a tulip and not a carnation but it was the closest he could get.
They’d been texting quite comfortably in the day since they’d first met up and had set their first proper date for that afternoon. Which, shit the bed, Vax now only had an hour and a half to get ready for.
Cursing, he jumped up, staggering a little when his legs momentarily forgot they were legs, surging forward into the room that was half their kitchen, half their living room and too small to be either. His sister was sitting on the sofa, not even dressed for work, reading a book while petting Trinket’s ear. The dog was whining and making himself look very hard done by, probably to get Vax even further in trouble.
“Why aren’t you at work?” Vax paused, “Did you burn the bakery down?”
Vex worked half a hundred odd jobs around the city, often going straight from one to the other, changing her uniforms in the subway bathrooms. But on Tuesdays and Thursdays she worked the early shifts at a bakery a few blocks away, putting in the morning bread and folding croissants. Often she’d come home with some misshapen goodies for supper, making that Vax’s favourite of her jobs.
Not that he really enjoyed seeing his sister run herself ragged, coming in at ridiculous hours to snatch what sleep she could and still struggling to make rent, rarely having the time to do the one thing she really enjoyed- volunteering at the animal shelter.
Though maybe if she did spend more time there, she’d come home with more dogs. Vax could live without that.
Vex wrinkled her nose and swatted at him, “They’re installing new ovens. I’m not the one who put a fork in the microwave last week.”
Vax tried to look offended as only someone entirely guilty of what they were being accused of could, “It was a rare lapse in judgement…”
After a very pointed eye roll, Vex jerked her thumb in the direction of the kitchen counter, “A package came for you, by the way.”
Knowing he still had very little time to get ready but curiosity piqued, Vax wandered over to see a small, brown paper package with his address inked in a very neat hand. He unwrapped it, thinking how he hadn’t had any post for so long, feeling that nostalgic rush of excitement like a little kid with a birthday present.
Inside he found a bag of coffee. The kind Caduceus made and sold at his café. And written on a little post it, right on the front was the same handwriting as the address and suddenly the neatness of the hand seemed so perfect, fitting the voice that accompanied it.
Good morning! See you soon xx P
“What are you doing, you goof?”
Vax had been grinning ridiculously wide for a long time before he even realised he was doing it and his sister’s remark made him suddenly grasp what an idiot he must seem. And how he definitely hadn’t been planning on explaining his new situation this soon. Or with foggy, just-woke-up brain.
“Uh…” he looked up, “Just…a present. From a friend.”
Vex narrowed her eyes, “A friend? What kind of friend?”
“The kind that sends me coffee,” Vax tried to look haughty, “Do you want some or not?”
“That seems very…niche.”
“And?” Vax could feel his voice getting higher and more defensive and entirely less convincing, “Look, no time, I have to get ready.”
“Ready for what?”
“Gods above, what’s with the third degree this morning? Tie me down and shine a line in my eyes, why don’t you?”
Vex’ahlia watched her brother storm off into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him as if he had anything to be incensed about. She sighed and turned back to Trinket as he heavily put his head in his mama’s lap.
“As long as it’s nothing illegal…” she murmured to him.
The dog blinked large brown eyes at her.
“You’re right, it probably is,” Vex groaned.
Vax reappeared a little while later, he never stayed in the shower for long. He marched past, towel cinched under his arms, going in front of the sofa so his sister couldn’t miss how he tossed his dripping wet hair and sniffed huffily. He slammed the door of his bedroom, leaving behind a scent that was unmistakably Vex’s favourite, treat day only shampoo.
She resolved to steal some of his coffee as soon as he was gone.
Vax had decided early on to meet always Percy somewhere other than his apartment.
There were a good long list of reasons for this. It would save Percy from being crushed to death under 250 pounds of affection starved dog. It would avoid him coming into contact with Vex, which would only lead to awkward questions and maybe Percy having an arrow fired at him if he startled her on her way to her archery class.
And, most importantly, Vax didn’t want him seeing his place. Not that he was ashamed or anything, he just didn’t want to feel like he had to defend it from someone who clearly lived in penthouses and country mansions. He and his sister had worked so hard to get the life they had now, earning their independence and freedom with tears and sleepless nights. It would always be sweet to them, even if it was poky, cluttered and had a damp problem they couldn’t get rid of.
Vax didn’t want to see everything they’d won look shabby and insignificant through someone else’s eyes; it would taste too much of Syldor. He didn’t think he’d be able to hold back his anger if that happened.
He’d never heard of the restaurant Percy offered to take him to, but he managed to find it and seated himself nice and obviously on the railings across the street. After two minutes of watching the place, Vax realised why he’d never been there. It was so far out of his price range, it may as well have been in a neighbouring galaxy.
He looked down at himself, his large boots and artfully ripped jeans (done by Vex after he put one of the knees through) and loose striped jumper in black and grey. His heart sank as he realised he really wasn’t dressed for this kind of place.
“Vax’ildan!”
His voice was full of warmth, he sounded genuinely delighted to see him. That alone would have caused the delicate, rosy blush on the tips of his pointed ears, if he hadn’t also looked drop dead gorgeous.
Their last meeting, there had definitely been handsomeness lurking under the exhaustion and nerves but this time Percy wasn’t hiding it, he was wearing it plain on his face. His hair was trimmed and smoothed over one side, everything underneath a white buzz that looked almost silver in the afternoon sun. His jaw was clean shaven however, taking years off him in an instant.
And he was wearing a suit. Vax suddenly realised he liked men in suits.
“Percy,” he stood, smiling, accepting the embrace that came his way. Gods, he even smelled expensive.
“I feared I’d imagined how handsome you were last time,” Percy dropped his voice to a more intimate volume as he pulled away, a smile pulling one side of his mouth up, “Apparently not.”
Vax’s ears coloured even more and he was suddenly glad he always styled his hair to cover them.
That’s how they were doing things, huh?
“Flattery will get you everywhere,” he smirked, resting a hand on Percy’s hip, “You look lovely, by the way.”
Percy’s confidence suddenly slipped and he gave a bashful smile, “My friend helped me choose it. She’s way better at that sort of stuff than me.”
Vax’s smile became warmer. He found he liked self-assured Percy and awkward nerd Percy. They were less two sides of a coin and more a changeable day of weather in the same sky.
“Well my compliments to her for choosing it and you for looking so good in it,” he grinned, sliding his arm through Percy’s, “Though you’re going to look even better next to me. I forgot who I was going to lunch with…”
Percy stopped, dismay crashing over his expression, “Oh…Vax, I’m so sorry, I didn’t…I didn’t think, I’m sorry if I made you feel like that…”
Vax grimaced, “Percy, no…bad joke, sorry. It’s fine. Though…if there’s a dress code, we might not be getting in…”
“I, um…” Percy coloured a little, “I don’t get turned away from places.”
“Of course not,” Vax looked down at his boots, drawing away from him.
“And…well,” Percy looked through the windows, into the warm exterior of the restaurant, “All those people in there are very well dressed. And I’d much rather spend an evening with you than any one of them. Funny, isn’t it?”
Vax lifted his eyes, so startled it took a few seconds for laughter kicked in, sudden and bright.
“Gods and I thought you were flattering me before…”
“There’s flattery and then there’s truth,” Percy smiled and for a moment, both kinds of weather could be seen in the sky like sun shining through drizzle. It was fairly beautiful.
Once enveloped in the warm, rustic Italian ambiance of the restaurant, the two of them began to talk, each of them surprised by how much they were sharing.
Vax learned that Percy also had a sister, though he didn’t live with her, younger than he was. Neither of them said a word about parents and both were happy with that arrangement. He learned Percy was thirty, had played rugby at his all boys school and would still like to but he didn’t know any teams nearby. He learned he had a mild addiction to video games, was allergic to shellfish and was kind to waitstaff.
Percy learned Vax’ildan preferred red wine to white, partly for the aesthetic which he happily confessed. He learned he’d been out as trans for three years, had been dancing since he was ten and thought tap was a criminally underrated art medium. He had just about every possible ear piercing going, which he shyly showed Percy after a little cajoling, always preferred the second act of a musical to the first and was a very fast eater.
“So…” Percy eventually broached, once he’d finished the last of his affogato, “What would you say to going back to my place after this?”
Vax stopped wondering if there was a subtle way to lick the last smears of chocolate off his plate and looked up, smiling easily, “Of course. Sounds lovely.”
He did a little internal check and found no lingering reservations. Have some probably average at best sex with a handsome, affable guy? He’d heard of worse ways to make rent.
As they walked to Percy’s car, Vax felt his phone buzz in his pocket, a message from his sister.
Are you okay? What do you want to do for dinner?
Vax felt a rush of guilt. He probably should have made sure there were leftovers to take home for her. That was the usual policy when one of them went on a date. The arancini had just tasted so damn good, he’d forgotten.
Sorry, I just ate with a friend. Don’t worry about me.
Less than two minutes later, a reply.
The same friend you mentioned this morning?
Vax narrowed his eyes.
None of your beeswax.
And yes.
“Okay, this is me.”
Vax knew nothing about cars but he could read luxury in the sleek lines of black metal, the silvered wink of axel and ridiculous hood ornament, “Woah…”
“Cars are kind of the one thing I let myself get a little crazy over,” Percy admitted, opening the passenger door for him, “Benefits of having money and being a bit of a nerd for engineering.”
“Yeah well,” Vax shrugged, “You should see my Metro card. It’s pretty swish.”
Percy laughed, sliding in behind the wheel and bringing the engine to life. Vax wondered quietly when the last time someone drove him somewhere was, when he wasn’t left to get wherever he wanted to go on his own two feet.
Of course it was impossible to get to any kind of speed, driving in a city as dense as this, though there was enough power in just the purr of the engine to make Vax anxious if Percy wasn’t such a methodical driver. His hands rarely left the wheel, flitting from here to there when they had to but always returning, blue eyes aware and fixed ahead.
He went to turn on the radio…though drew his hand back after a pause, “Actually…we should probably have a talk about this.”
“About what?” Vax tilted his head.
“Well…about what kind of things we like? About what we don’t like?” Percy bit his lip, “You know. In bed.”
“Oh right,” Vax waited for Percy to say more though none came and he assumed it was his turn first. Clearly Percy’s poised manner of speaking was struggling with talking about sex.
He thought for a moment, deciding to be a little more honest than he was anticipating, a little surer in getting a good reaction, “I don’t usually like being penetrated. Some days I’m down for it but they’re few and far between. Mouth down there is fine but if you’re careful about, you know, the words you use, nothing too specific…I’d appreciate that.”
Percy nodded, still watching the road carefully though he was clearly listening intently, “Okay. Well, that makes what I was going to ask you a lot simpler.”
Vax hummed curiously, prompting him with a look.
Cheeks now fully red, Percy managed to force out in a rush, “I was going to ask if you fancied fucking me?”
Vax gave a bark of delighted laughter, “Atta boy, that wasn’t so hard, huh?”
“Shut up,” Percy was still the colour of Vax’s wine but laughter was bubbling up, “Take this as a warning for the level of inexperience you’re dealing with. In fact, that’s part of the reason why I got in contact with you. Your job is to help me introduce a little bit of…variety into my bedroom. How does that sound?”
Vax grinned, tucking one leg up to his chest, “That sounds like something we can definitely do.”
Vax knew he should be impressed. How could he not be, after seeing the sheer size of the apartment block, a dizzying behemoth of glass and steel that warped perspective in a sickening way, and the opulence of the foyer, everything modern and styled with an effortless hand.
And he was, for a very brief moment. When the elevator doors slid open, right into Percy’s living room and he was shocked by the vista from the wrap around windows, the city wreathed in dusk like a watercolour painting that needed two glances to see was really real, he was too awestruck to speak.
And then all he could think was that this didn’t feel like a home. It felt unlived in. It was like an Ikea showroom, fun to imagine lounging around in but it was sterile and barren. Like a hotel room, like somewhere kept exclusively by a businessman for when he was in the city. Nowhere to really live.
And, as he took him on a tour that didn’t take very long because there was very little in the apartment, Percy looked so lonely. Everything around him seemed too big, making him look like a little kid playing at being his father. Vax watched him rattle around in the black leather, polished silver, exposed brickwork rooms, feeling a strange sense of pity that he couldn’t pin down.
“And this is the bedroom…” Percy pushed back the door, holding it for Vax.
Not my room. The bedroom.
It did have a little more life to it, a good amount of mess that had clearly been hurriedly tidied away that morning. Books, a small TV clearly only there for the benefit of the games console resting against it, half-finished projects of cogs and soldered pipes, blue prints tacked up on the walls that were so detailed and covered in scribbled notes they were incomprehensible to Vax. There was even something living, a plant on the windowsill with brilliant white blooms that were jug shaped and gave off a wonderful smell, kind of like a lily.
“What’s this?” Vax asked, stroking one of its wide, shiny green leaves.
“Oh,” Percy took off his suit jacket, hanging it idly on the door, “A present from my friend, Keyleth. She’s a druid, spends all her time minding the wildlife in the national park outside the city, breeds her own new strains when the mood takes her. She named that one after me as a bit of a joke.”
“What’s the joke?” Vax’s ears picked up with interest.
Percy stopped in the middle of taking off his tie, looking like he wished he hadn’t said anything, “Oh, it’s, um…kind of an inside thing…”
“You are not getting away with that, absolutely no chance,” Vax raised an eyebrow, folding his arms determinedly.
“Gods, I wanted to wait as long as possible before I had to tell you this,” Percy pinched the bridge of his nose, knocking his glasses askew, “We haven’t even had sex yet…”
“I promise I’ll still have sex with you!” Vax wheedled, kneeling on the bed, leaning towards him eagerly, “Tell me!”
“It’s…I’m going to murder Keyleth…it’s called the Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III Lilium…I mean, the lilium part isn’t in my name obviously…that’s the plant…”
Vax paused, carefully controlling his expression, “Oh…”
Percy winced, “Are you still willing to have sex with me?”
“You said you’d pay my rent, right?”
“Yes.”
“We can still have sex.”
Percy looked abashed for a moment until Vax couldn’t maintain his composure and burst out laughing, soon catching his riotous cackling in spite of himself.
Once they’d caught their breath, Percy found himself down to his shirt and pants, the next step in undressing rather a major one, “Mind if I…?”
Vax gave an encouraging gesture, perching on the sheets, eyes interested. The being watched, the sudden irrefutable presence of another heartbeat in the room, another set of eyes on him that hadn’t been there before, had something inside him stirring.
He couldn’t say any more than that yet. Just something. But he wanted to chase after it.
He took his shirt off slowly, methodically, not yanking it off and tossing it to one side like he normally would. He was suddenly so aware of everything, every single movement he made, every inch of newly revealed skin.
“Nice ink,” was the only comment Vax made as he abandoned shirt and trousers. But there was a spark of hunger in his almost black eyes and his pupils were widening by the second.
“Thank you,” Percy smirked, hooking his thumbs under the band of his boxer shorts, “I hate them. Relic of my misspent early twenties.”
“You’ll have to tell me about them one day,” the half elf returned easily, somehow the epicentre of the charged, wanton tension in the room despite being fully clothed down to the boots, “Now the underwear. Please.”
Percy swallowed hard, feeling something not unlike fireworks in his chest. He slid down the last bit of fabric preventing him from being completely and utterly naked (though he wasn’t sure if glasses counted) in front of another person in years.
“Well well…” Vax’s voice was a murmur though it hit Percy like electricity, “You’re a very handsome man, Percival.”
Percy didn’t want to admit how good those words made him feel, his body responding in kind, electricity gathering low in his stomach and between his legs, “Now you, please?”
Vax hopped up happily. Whereas Percy had been shy, methodical, aware of every move he made, his partner was haphazard and eager as if this was all very commonplace.
Though he stopped when Percy blurted, “That’s a little small, isn’t it?”
Vax froze, looking down at himself, only wearing his flesh coloured binder and his boxers. He didn’t enjoy this transition period and stopping still during it was jarring, “What?”
“Your…sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Percy bit his lip, “Your binder. It’s a little too small for you?”
“Well…” Vax shifted, “Yeah, I could do with the next size up but…this one still does the job, I guess. How do you even know that?”
“My boyfriend at boarding school was trans,” Percy explained quickly, “I did my research back then.”
“Oh,” Vax’s defensiveness drained away and he relaxed into the unfamiliar but welcome luxury of not feeling like a novelty, “Well remembered, then.”
It came off shortly after, anyway, along with his underwear. The look on Percy’s face was flattering to say the very least.
Oh yeah, both men had the exact same thought at the exact same time, unbeknownst to each other, I chose well.
“I ordered it on kind of a whim so I hope it’ll fit…”
Vax gave himself a long, indulgent look in the mirror. The harness was real leather and steel, the metal excitingly cold against his flesh, all of it cradling his hips perfectly. The toy itself was black, as if to match the straps that held it in place and married it to his body, black as Vax’s hair.
There was a lovely synergy to the whole look.
“Wicked,” he grinned, not really having heard a word Percy was saying.
He turned and gently pushed him back onto the bed, stopping his anxious muttering, turning it into soft gasp, so soft for such an angular man. Percy looked lovely against the black silk of his expansive bed, so startlingly pale, like he was negative space in the middle of the world.
Vax personally thought the best angle to view a lover from was while pinning them to the surface you were about to fuck them on. And Percy certainly didn’t disappoint, pupils as dilated as an excited cat, red flush spreading down from his cheeks across his chest like ink dropped in milk. Vax could watch as the breath caught in his throat.
A perfect time for a first kiss. And so that’s what he did.
He tasted of wine, white wine, but Vax thought he could learn to bear that t when it came from someone else’s lips. Percy’s hand came up and held him just right, resting right there on the nape of his neck, thumb close enough to feel his racing pulse. His own hand moved down and Percy’s long legs parted so easily for him, letting him feel that softer, warmer skin, the more tender parts of him.
The sweet man was hard enough to be steadily leaking pre already. It must have been a while since he’d had someone. Vax gave him a teasing squeeze but continued down, he had a job to do right now and was determined to do it well.
“Easy, sweetling, I just need to…” Vax gasped, their kiss having left his lungs burning around the edges. He snatched up the bottle of lube helpfully left on the nightstand, though with the immense size of the bed it was a bit of a reach. It was cool against his fingers, thick, the oddly scentless scent of it catapulting him back to other places, other bodies, other faces. To realising sex could be a lot of fun, to rediscovering himself under the hands of others.
He would always love it.
“Just get you good and ready…” he murmured, voice breathy and soft. All Percy could do was moan.
Turns out Percy was tight in more than just personality. But Vax’s fingers knew their business well and carefully, so carefully, he made the man underneath him yield. Percy whimpered as Vax’s fingers breached him, slick and cold, igniting everything inside him that had been waiting anxiously for the spark it needed.
“Vax’ildan…” he gasped, fingers tightening in the sheets and the tightly curled hair at the nape of his lover’s neck.
“It’s okay,” the whisper came in return, “Relax, deep breaths…”
Percy followed his instructions, feeling the thrill of giving himself over to someone else’s control. Evening had stolen away when neither of them were looking and the room had quickly become dark so everything was down to just shapes, devoid of detail.
He felt, rather than saw, Vax’s heart beat faster, teasing his own, beckoning for it to follow. He felt their skin pressed together, growing hot. He heard the smile in Vax’s voice, he felt the creeping cold of more lube running between his cheeks, he smelt sex and sweat and something amber sweet in Vax’s hair. He felt his muscles loosen, melting, becoming Vax’s to reshape as he chose.
“Ready for me?” the half elf whispered in his ear, the hand that wasn’t half buried in Percy resting delicately on his chest, almost chastely in bizarre contrast to the fingers that still rocked inside him, coming achingly close to his prostate but very deliberately not getting there.
“I need you,” Percy moaned, nerves prickling at the neediness in his own voice, the pleading.
Vax caught it too, teeth flashing in the gloom as he grinned, “Good boy.”
Not finishing in that moment took all of Percy’s brainpower, leaving him only enough to whimper, hoping that brought across how much he really, really liked that.
Vex shifted, pressing the rounded tip of the toy a breath into Percy, giving a feather soft groan as the pressure brought the other end of the toy flush against where he needed it. Percy himself swallowed back another whine, feeling the sweet stretch of his entrance. Obediently, he hooked his hands behind his knees and brought them to his chest, leaving himself even more open and exposed, offering himself completely.
He got exactly what he wanted. Vax moved further into him, hips finding a comfortable depth then rocking back and forth.
“Gods, that feels good…” Percy’s eyelids fluttered, his voice a smoky rasp, “Deeper…”
“I’m getting there,” Vax sounded delighted, “Let’s not walk before we can run or you’re not going to be able to do either tomorrow.”
But his thrusts were getting deeper, more deliberate, hitting both of their sweet spots at the same time. Percy began to keen at the apex of each one and soon Vax was grunting and gasping along with him, arms starting to shake and fingers starting to claw at the sheets.
“Can you come just from this? Just from having me in your ass?” Vax panted, whole body taut as a drawn bow.
Percy nodded, fingers leaving white marks in his own legs, “Yes, gods, I’m there, I’m coming…”
Vax grinned, timing it perfectly as he leaned in and kissed him deeply, hitting his prostate directly, swallowing Percy’s loud, shaky moan of release as he shuddered through his own.
It was a while before either of them could marshal words but Vax got there first, “And how was that, Percival Frankenstein von Whatever Lilypants?”
Percy made a sound that probably would have managed to be a laugh if he had any breath, “Damn that fucking plant…”
Giggling, Vax drew out of him and rolled onto his back, the whole room tipping around him and settling a little lopsided but he didn’t care.
“So…” Percy rolled over, lying on his stomach, probably getting the sheets filthy but that was already done, “I think this is going to work out?”
“Me too,” Vax smiled, “That was good.”
“I did set up the bank transfer, of course,” he added quickly, “I haven’t forgotten. Before the 15th, right?”
Vax hadn’t realised how heavy the stress of making that month’s rent had been, not until it disappeared in that moment.
“Thanks Percy. And the coffee was really sweet of you, by the way.”
Percy smiled and shrugged, though clearly pleased, “I thought it would be a nice way to start, at least until I get a few more ideas.”
Vax thought for a moment, letting himself actually want, trying to remember how that felt, “I like…oh, I like knives!”
As soon as it was out of his mouth he realised how that sounded and he clamped his jaw shut.
Percy looked at him, “Wait…what?”
“Are you absolutely, positively sure?” Vax asked for what must have been the fiftieth time, “It’s going to leave a hole, you know that?”
Sat on the couch in a loosely cinched blue robe, Percy waved a dismissive hand, “I’ll repair any damage. Go ahead.”
“You might have to wave goodbye to your security deposit…” Vax warned, tossing the kitchen knife lightly from hand to hand, getting a better feel for its weight. Not a throwing knife by any means, a lot heavier and clunkier than his own set, but it would do for a demonstration.
“Vax’ildan, my sweet, if I’d ever had one of those it would have been gone years ago,” Percy arched an eyebrow, “But the company owns the building. Let fly.”
Vax laughed, taking aim at the square white pillar, part of the partition between the kitchen and the living space, immaculately painted and polished. And ideal to plant a knife in. He focused, drew in a long slow breath and then released it as his hand flashed forward.
Half a heartbeat later, the knife was buried half to the hilt in the plaster, a disapproving puff of dust and the ghost of a loud thud settling around it.
“Holy shit,” Percy sounded awed and when Vax turned to look at him, he couldn’t help but notice a now familiar blush in his cheeks.
He’d already texted his sister, giving her a heads up that he was sleeping out at a friend’s. It was only half a lie, Percy could probably be considered a friend at this point.
They just wouldn’t be doing a lot of sleeping.

The Past | Zach Herron
Requested? Yup! Hope you like it :)
Warnings? Death, therapy, anxiety, crying, it’s a sad one friends
Word Count: 1,979
“I’m sorry but there’s nothing else we could do.” The words ring in your ears as the worst news of your life settles over you. You watch as your dad asks a million questions but it’s blocked out by the ringing in your ears.
Your mom couldn’t be gone. She couldn’t have been. She was supposed to go in for a quick back surgery. She was supposed to come out stronger and you were gonna get your old mom back. The one who could do amusement parks for hours and stand in line with you to concerts.
Your best friend and the one who raised you. She was supposed to come back and it didn’t make any sense that she wasn’t going to. You went through every stage of loss in about five seconds before going right back to being numb.
Everything happens in slow motion but also all at once. After your dad has finished asking all the questions he needs to, the doctor leaves and your left in the waiting room again. You hear your dad tell you that the doctor was going to come out with her remaining things and then you could go but it all sounds like static in your ears.
The drive home was only ten minutes but it was dead silent. It didn’t change when you got home or the next few days. You and your dad floated around each other like ghosts, only saying a few words to each other at a time.
The funeral is when it hits you the hardest. Your father asked you to sing for her because that’s what she always wanted. It took all of your willpower not to start bawling in the middle of her favorite song but you somehow made it through. You listened to people tell you stories about your mom and you smile but inside you were sobbing.
You didn’t break down until you got home. You shut the front door behind you and fall to your knees crying your eyes out. Your dad picked you up and helped you over to the couch and the two of you sat in silence for the longest time.
“She loved you so much.” He said eventually. “She was so sad whenever you’d have to go back to school because she couldn’t see you as much.”
“It’s only gonna get harder.” You said through thick tears.
“But it will always get better.” He reminds you.
Both of you ended up being right. It got worse for the both of you as time went on. But it eventually did get better too. After a few months and nothing getting better you decided to go to therapy. Since your mom’s death was pretty sudden it was taking longer to accept it.
You had also suffered from anxiety your entire life and found yourself riddled with panic attacks whenever you tried to talk about it. It was probably the hardest time of your life. So, when your dad suggested therapy to help you cope, you decided to give it a shot.
“How are you doing today?” Your best friend asks. She was the only one who really knew what was going on with you and helped you through the worst days.
“Better.” You say before taking a sip of your tea. “I’m seeing a lot of her today but it’s all good memories.”
“I’m glad. You deserve all good days.”
Just as you’re about to ask her how she’s doing, you’re interrupted by two boys walking up to the table. The blonde one stops in front of your best friend and her face lights up at the sight of him.
“Corbyn!!” She exclaims before standing and giving the unknown boy a hug.
“Hey! What are you doing on this side of town?”
“Oh (y/n) lives around here.” She says gesturing to you. You offer a half hearted wave and Corbyn smiles at you.
“I’m Corbyn and this is my friend Zach.” He says finally introducing you to the other boy still standing next to your table.
As cheesy as it was, when his eyes landed on you it was like the world slowed down. Your eyes connect in slow motion and you’re instantly entranced by his earthly colored ones. Your breath had been sucked out of you and it felt like you were floating.
“Hi.” You finally say and you giggle when Zach opens and closes his mouth trying to say something.
If soulmates were a thing, Zach was almost certain he just met his. He was also in the middle of making a fool of himself in front of her too. She was breathtaking in the most unconventional way. In the way that Zach would never get tired of looking at her.
“Hey.” He responds and instantly wants to smack a hand on his face. That’s all he could say?
“I’m gonna go grab another drink.” Your best friend says upon seeing you and Zach fall in love right before her eyes.
“I’ll come with.” Corbyn offers and the two head off, leaving you alone with the younger boy.
“Can I sit?” He asks and you nod your head, still not being able to find your voice completely. “So, you live around here?” He starts.
The two of you dive into the normal beginning of a friendship conversation, where you live, where you’re from, how old you were etc. As you start to hit it off you remember that you’re here with your best friend and you haven’t seen her in a minute.
“Have you seen Corbyn and (y/bff/n)?” You ask Zach and the two of you search the coffee shop.
“They must have left.” He says turning back to you and shrugging his shoulders.
“She was my ride.” You sigh.
“I can drive you home.”
After talking a little bit longer, you two throw out your remaining cups and head out. Zach leads you towards an all black jeep and when you get there he opens the door for you. You hop up into the car and he shuts the door before running around to his side.
The ride is mostly silent except for the soft sounds of music playing and you telling Zach how to get to your house. When he pulls up, you look at the empty house and sigh.
Just as you’re about to pull open the door, Zach speaks.
“Do you maybe uh possibly wanna hangout sometime?” He asks nervously and his smile shoots straight to your heart.
“Yeah that’d be fun.” You respond. He sighs in relief and you offer a tiny smile. The two of you swap phone numbers before finally heading inside.
It took another week for you to actually hangout with Zach alone though. You were mad that you were holding yourself back because just from the texts he sent you already liked him. However, you hadn’t let many people in since your mom passed which is something you and your therapist were working on.
So, as sad as it was, you weren’t only excited to hangout with Zach, you were also excited to tell your therapist how much you branched out. He ended up picking you up at 4 and you headed to the closest movie theater for a quick dinner at chick fil a before the movie.
Throughout the night, you and Zach had learned more and more about each other. For once, you felt truly happy and you forgot about the trillion thoughts that always seemed to be running through your brain.
When you got to the movies, the two of you had decided on the new annabelle movie. Normally, you hated horror movies but Zach begged you to see it and you found out quickly that it’s hard to say no to that face.
Throughout the movie you find yourself curling towards Zach and he smiles down at you before lifting the armrest and gesturing for you to come towards him. He wraps you up in his arms and your heart settles instantly.
The rest of the date goes extremely well and by the time Zach pulls up to your house you wish he didn’t have to go home. However, you two plan to hangout again tomorrow and end the night with the best kiss of your life.
After that night, and many more nights after that, you and Zach fell quickly for each other. You also became super close with all of his bandmates especially Daniel.
However, you still hadn’t told Zach about your mom. Every time he mentioned her or brought up family, you froze. You gave him vague details and begged to move on. The other issue was that he didn’t know about your therapy. While you weren’t exactly ashamed of going to therapy for help, you were nervous for Zach’s reaction.
“Shoot. I have to go.” You say before standing to grab your stuff that was randomly placed around Zach’s room.
“Where?” He asks and you falter for a second before grabbing your keys from his desk.
“I have to help my dad out with something. See you tomorrow?” Before he can respond you pecked his lips quickly and then turn to rush out the door.
Daniel walks in a few minutes later to Zach with a confused look appearing across his features. He tilts his head at the younger boy, noticing his girlfriend’s absence and the expression couldn’t be good.
“Hey man.” He greets the brunette. “Where’s (y/n)?”
“She dipped. Had to help her dad with something.”
“That’s all?” Daniel asks knowing there was definitely something wrong with Zach.
“I don't know man. She’s always leaving at this time, every Tuesday night. It seems kinda weird.” He says shrugging his shoulders.
“You see her tomorrow right? Tell her how you feel. It can’t hurt.”
The next day, Zach invites you over for brunch, your favorite type of food. You got to wake up late and eat breakfast? It truly was heaven. You headed over there around 10 and headed straight into the house.
You walk in to find Zach in the kitchen, pouring juice into glasses and setting them down next to your plate of food. He offers you a sweet smile before leading you over to the table and pulling out a chair for you.
The two of you begin to eat and make some small talk about the upcoming week and any future plans you have together. Throughout breakfast, you notice that Zach seemed a bit off and just as he’s about to get up and wash the dishes you stop him.
“What’s up?” He halts his actions and pulls a chair up to sit in front of you.
“Where do you go every Tuesday night?”
The question takes you by surprise but it makes sense that he would ask. Zach was smart and pretty observational so it’s understandable that he was wondering where you went. You also knew it was time to tell him.
“Therapy.” You respond and he cocks his head to the side in confusion. “My mom passed away about a year ago. It was sudden and I didn’t know how to deal with it. Along with my anxiety it got pretty bad.”
“(y/n) I’m so sorry I didn’t know.”
“It’s okay. I’m doing better, I can talk about her without crying which is a step forward.” You take his hand in yours and carefully run the tips of your fingers over his decorated rings. “I have you to thank. You’ve helped me a lot.”
“I have?” He asks and you nod.
“You were my light at the end of the tunnel.” His face breaks out in the smile that had your heart since day one. He leans forward and connects your lips, while placing a hand on your leg and giving it a light squeeze.
“And you’re mine.”

The Devil Wears Kevlar - Part 5
Tumblr media
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 6 Part 7
oh my god you guys we’re so close to shit finally going down it’s gonna rock your fucking worlds and I cannot WAIT for you to undergo it it’s gonna be so much fun. also i know jack shit about charity galas so like... watch out for that. or botanical gardens, for that matter. anyway enjoy! pls tell me what you think this is my baby
Calum invites Aspen to a gala and it’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to her.
Well, technically it’s a fundraiser for the Gotham City Children’s Organization. Also, she’s gonna be more of an employee, strictly speaking, than a guest. And Mr. Hood really only asked her to work there this Friday evening, she’s not, like, his date or anything. He kinda sprang this whole thing on her. To be completely honest, too, it’s probably only the most exciting thing to happen to her in, like, two months, because she’s cool, goddamnit.
Anyway, Aspen is going to be working overtime this Friday evening and she couldn’t be happier.
She’s been wound up about this since he told her Tuesday. She’s gonna dress up all nice, she’s gonna rub elbows with the Gotham elite, she’s gonna unhinge her jaw like a python and eat an entire tray of canapés - it’ll be good for her.
They’ve all been stressed.
For her, it’s just that it hasn’t been long since the Liam fiasco. That was rough. And for his part, Calum looks more and more worn down. The tabloids in the grocery store checkout line told her he’s not seeing that nurse or reporter or whoever it was anymore. He’s been stiff lately, with bags under his eyes despite whatever million-dollar face cream he’s doubtlessly using. If she wasn’t being very disciplined about their relationship she’d tease him to switch away from decaf. Maybe he’s sick, she thinks. Could be the flu. Compromised immune system and whatnot.
He’s under a lot of stress, now, after the murder.
Trident Incorporated was next, in the string of CEO attacks, and it was so much worse, this time around. The police found the Barton Mathis’ body shot in the head with hundred dollar bills stuffed in his mouth. Aspen knows because she made sure Mr. Hood got to the funeral on time.
It’s… worrying. Worrying because her pattern holds; they’d been just about to sign a big contract with Trident when the man was killed. She knows it’s crazy, Calum wouldn’t kill someone. No matter how cold he may come off. She hopes so, anyways. Sometimes his mood changes like that, and even if he didn’t pull the trigger, this is Gotham. There are any number of people who would do it for the right price. It’s the money down the victim’s throat, of all things, that makes her change her mind. She’s seen his car - money certainly doesn’t disgust him.
So Calum isn’t the killer, probably. But that still scares her.
Because he’s probably next.
He doesn’t get a bodyguard. He doesn’t amp up security, he doesn’t tell Aspen about a panic room or anything. It’s like he hasn’t fucking realized the danger he’s in. Aspen knows it’s not her job to stress about that, but that doesn’t mean that creeping horror hasn’t settled into her ribs. All she can do is keep her mouth shut and help him through the financial quarter ending, which is no fucking picnic either, in case you were wondering. She gets used to working late.
So, yeah, she could use a break. They all could.
Friday morning, she brings her dress with her, folded up in a plastic grocery bag. That morning, when she hands over the coffee, Alfred passes her a suit in a garment bag as soon as her hands are free. “Do try not to wrinkle it before the event, Master Calum.” He says, giving Aspen a little wink like he knows she’d never do such a thing.
Calum rolls his eyes at both of them, but he’s the closest to smiling he’s been in days.
“And you’ve got your outfit?” He ask her as they step into the elevator.
She nods and wiggles the plastic shopping bag hanging off her wrist. “Don’t worry, sir, I’m going to look very fiscally responsible.” She’s taking donations at the event, so she’s already wearing her most accountant-like cardigan, but she’s gonna class it up this evening. Her nails are painted, and they’re not chipped yet or anything.
Anyway, he smiles distinctly at that. She likes being able to do that. It’s like a magic trick. “It’s good to see you smiling again. Thought maybe you forgot how.” Aspen says, and this time she doesn’t even try to stop herself. She’s been very good for the past few weeks, and she needs a rest from acting soulless and polite. Really, she’s just being nice.
“What?” Mr. Hood turns to look at her. Maybe she’s been more serious than she thought, if he’s that surprised to hear her tease him.
“I mean, you’ve had some rough days. ‘M glad to see you looking a little more relaxed.” Aspen delicately refrains from making a joke, and just gives him a little shrug and the truth. It seems like this means a lot to him, anyway - it feels like the first time he’s looked at her and seen her in ages. That feeling comes back, the one she buried. “And, y’know, it makes my job a lot easier when you’re in a good mood. No offense. Sir.” She covers it again, hastily, and like a spell’s been broken the elevator doors open and she steps into the lobby.
“None taken,” she hears him murmur from behind her as she maneuvers herself and the bag through his office door. “You know when the car’s coming, right?”
“At three.” She slips easy into the day-to-day talk, like an old sweater. It’s welcome. She feels like she’s burning under her skin and from nothing. This is why it has to be so stiff; there’s so much she risks with too-kind words. “Guests start to arrive at four thirty, your talk is at five-thirty, and then at 8 there’s the after-gala at Note Bene.”
“You’re invited to that, too.” Aspen turns around from hanging up his garment bag. Mr. Hood is looking at her from behind his desk, adjusting his sleeves - maybe just so he has something to do with his hands. “You could come along. I didn’t know if you would want to but- you seem excited for this.”
Aspen tells herself he’s offering to be polite, which- he must be. She can’t fool herself like that. It’s the stupid chemistry, that’s all, it’s getting to her, and if she ignores it long enough it’ll go away. “Thank you, but that’s not really my scene, I think.” She smiles, shrugs. “Anything else I can help you with while I’m in here, sir?”
“No. Thank you for all you help with the event, though, Aspen. I’m glad to have someone I can trust in charge of donations.” He says. She remembers in her interview, only three weeks ago, how he had eyes that pinned her to the wall. She feels it in his gaze now, too.
She can’t linger.
“Just doing my job!” She chirps, darting out the door and closing it softly behind her.
She thought she was over this, what the fuck?
It’s not a great time for these feelings to resurface, since he’ll probably be looking real real good in his suit this afternoon. There’s isn’t really a good time to get a crush on your boss, though. Being so impersonal had been driving Aspen crazy, but the second she relaxes around that man she gets weak; maybe this time she’ll learn her lesson.
She gets to work. She’s sifting through emails when the first phone call of the day comes through, and she checks the clock - it’s not even nine yet. That’s interesting. She’s not suspicious, though, not yet.
“Hood Enterprises, how can I help you?” She asks in her very best secretary voice.
“Hello, Detective Gordon, GCPD. I need to talk to Mr. Hood.”
Aspen feels like a stutter. Shit. Does this mean - is her boss some kind of Patrick Bateman or - the lie comes to her in a split second. “Well, he usually doesn’t come in until nine, but I’ll see if I missed him coming in. Just one moment, alright?” She smiles, even though the man on the other end can’t see it, and as soon as he agrees she puts him on hold and transfers to call Calum.
Aspen’s been touched by Calum. She knows he’s not a killer. But if he’s mixed up in- if this is about Don Falcone, or- no matter how she tries to justify it, her first instinct was to protect him however she could. That’s foolish, she knows. But here she is.
Calum picks up before she can lose her liar’s nerve. “There’s a detective from the GCPD on the line for you.” She explains, praying she at least doesn't sound paranoid. “I was wondering if you were in.”
It's calculating, the silence on the other line. They're both careful not to say too much, even in normal situations, but this… it's a little more delicate.
“Did they mention their name?” He asks, which relaxes Aspen a little. It's not the worst answer he could have given.
“Ah, a Detective Gordon.” She says, which seems to be the right answer, because he asks her to connect him.
Aspen does, and then she has to hang up and live with what just happened, which is better than talking to a policeman. Only just, though.
She thinks Calum can't get mad at her for thinking he could have something to hide if he didn't want to talk on the phone.  Worst comes to worst, she'll say she wasn't sure if he'd want a lawyer or not. She knows he won't buy it, but it's a fair defence.
Now that she's got that figured out, she turns her attention to what her boss is hiding. Some offshore bank accounts? Or maybe Gordon is some cop he's paying off, to hide a secret double life. Maybe he's doing something wicked, just for the thrill of it. She’d say something related to escorts, but Aspen's pretty confident there's no one he couldn't have if he really wanted, so that's out.
Usually Aspen loves thinking up great and improbable theories for things she doesn't understand. It's different now, with Calum. She's got respect for him, and she doesn't want to lose that. It's probably healthy for her to drop her romanticized vision of him so she can get some fucking work done, if she's honest, but… god, she doesn't want to. Even after three weeks of being snapped at, she still sees a beauty in him, and that's rare. She kind of wants to chase that.
She keeps herself from thinking too much by listening to the phone messages that people left last night. Shit, she’s probably gonna have to come back in after the gala, isn’t she? Lots of emergencies and news happens at the end of the day, she should really- shit, no, this isn’t working, she can’t focus. She’s still turned upside down by what her boss might be involved in.
She tells herself she’s just worried for her job security. It doesn’t change anything.
She’s watching out of the corner of her eye and she sees when the line Calum’s being called on goes dead. How long is he going to wait before he called her in? He’s gonna want to talk about this, and ooh, who knew who could be listening? Wait, that’s a little cloak and dagger, even for her.
That’s what she thinks at the time, anyway. She has no idea.
He gives it only about a minute before he calls her and asks her to come into his office. It must be important, then. Aspen’s almost more curious than nervous; she’s pretty sure something is up, but she’s excited to see how Calum tries to brush it off. She steps in and smiles like she has no idea what to expect, like nothing’s wrong. “How can I help you?”
He’s writing something when she comes in, which she’s starting to think is a defence mechanism. He doesn’t make her wait, though, he puts his pen down as soon as she speaks up. “Oh, I just wanted to say that appreciate your discretion.” He says, face carefully controlled.
Very eloquent, he’s very good at this. She’s almost reassured. “Absolutely, sir. Should I do the same thing every time the police call, or-”
“You can transfer Gordon through directly, but otherwise… please. Yes.” He smiles stiffly, and Aspen can’t help it, she takes it as a challenge. She’s gonna find out what’s going on.
It’s like he can read her mind, because he says “None of that, Miss McMichael, don’t give me that look.” Aspen startles. Was it really that obvious? Does she have a look? She’s almost in trouble, judging by how he’s addressing her.
Her heart starts to pound despite herself. “A cat may look at a king, sir.” She tries to cover, but that asshole sees right through her.
“I don’t want you getting the wrong idea about this, alright? Detective Gordon was letting me know about the security at the fundraiser. After the- um, I think you understand why it’s essential for our guests to feel safe.”
Shit.
Okay, maybe Aspen was a little hasty. “Of course, sir.” She says, making her most sympathetic face. Fuck, one of his peers was just murdered, no wonder he’s in touch with the police. She’d be nervous and shifty, too.
...it doesn’t quite explain why he only wants to hear from Gordon, but she’ll save that for later.
She makes a quick exit, now, after mumbling updates about all the messages she’s sifted through. A lot of people want to talk to Calum this morning, and as soon as business hours start he’s kept on the line pretty solidly through the morning and afternoon. In the middle of one of his phone calls, around noon, she sneaks in and puts a granola bar on his desk, and she’s out before she can see if he smiles at her for it. It’s been a, um, weird morning, and she wants to avoid anything that champagne could catalyze tonight. She’s just being a good PA, to be sure, but still.
The day drags on until three in the afternoon. Fifteen minutes before the car is supposed to come (god, Aspen feels so fancy when she thinks that), she shuts her computer down and stands up. Since the incident with Liam, she’s taken to locking the schedule in her file cabinet, just to be safe, so that’s what she does before she sneaks out of her office to get changed.
Aspen knows she’s not supposed to be attracting attention at this thing, so she’s dressed a little like a librarian. She borrowed a black slip dress from her roommate (since Aspen hasn’t bought a dress since, like, prom), and she’s wearing a grey cardigan over it to keep her looking tepid. Now, smoothing out the skirt in the bathroom mirror, she thinks happily that she’s not completely sexless.
She knows that’s dangerous, given her feelings for her boss (ugh), but since he doesn’t reciprocate what’s the harm in looking like a sexy librarian? The confidence will probably fade as soon as she’s surrounded by whatever designer tea gowns the guests will be wearing, but she doesn’t mind.
“You look nice,” Janice tells her once she emerges, and Aspen appreciates the gesture.
“Aw, thanks. I was going for an outfit that said ‘trust me with thousands of dollars’, you think it’ll go over well?” She smiles, and Janice nods. “I think I’m gonna come back after the thing just to check messages, so don’t worry about answering my phone.” She adds as she’s heading back to her desk, grabbing her coat and bag.
When she turns around, she sees Calum.
Here’s the thing; she knew he would look good. He looks good all the time, just business casual, but he looks good now, in a suit that looks expensive and tailored and beautiful. Fuck this, honestly, Aspen’s gonna have to avoid him all night to keep from making a fool of herself.
She blinks to take him in, and their eyes meet. He was looking at her, he must have been, looking properly. She knows she can’t hold a candle to him, not in her begged and borrowed outfit, but the fucking electricity between them makes her hope for a second-
“Ready to go?” He asks her. If she didn’t know better, she’d say he was smirking.
“Yeah, absolutely.” Aspen says. Her voice comes out so much smoother than she feels.
How’s she supposed to handle the car ride? Being in a small enclosed space with him sounds like too good of an idea right now.
She waves goodbye to Janice as they head out, and she busies herself with the tablet he gave her for taking donations in the elevator so she has an excuse not to look at him too long. It reminds her that, right, she could get in serious trouble if she doesn’t stay focused here today, and that cools her down enough to relax a little.
Aspen had been hoping that Calum would have a limo to take there, so when it’s his usual sedan waiting outside she feels a little let down. It doesn’t make sense for him to take a limo if he’s showing up before everyone else, she guesses, no one to show off for, but she had been hoping... Whatever. Alfred opens the door for her, and she slides in and immediately finds herself next to a kid with black hair and the bluest eyes she’s ever seen. He’s little, wiry, and he’s maybe twelve. Calum follows her in, and maybe he senses her confusion. “Aspen, this is my ward, Dick Grayson. Dick, this is my assistant, Ms. McMichael.”
Dick Grayson puts out his hand to shake. “A pleasure to meet you, miss.” He says, with confidence you don’t usually find in a pre-teen.
Aspen is used to things being weird by now, so she reaches out and shakes his hand, just to be polite. “Likewise. Hey, you can call me Aspen, people only call me Ms. McMichael when I’m in trouble.” She smiles, just to put the kid a little more at ease. It’s eerie, seeing someone so young so formal.
It seems to work well enough, because as the car starts Dick smiles so wide his face almost cracks open. That’s better. “I read one of your research papers. About, um, the protein in the cell membrane, the, um, it was a sort of, um, ATP pump, the-”
“Oh, yeah, yeah, the effects of the SNP mutation- I remember. How’d you like it?”
Dick screws up his face and then immediately tries to smooth it out, regain his composure. He’s still trying to be polite, Aspen thinks, which is adorable but so not her style. Plus, he’s like eleven, he shouldn’t have composure. “It was-” he says-
“Godawful to read, right?” Aspen slouches back into the car seat, hoping if she relaxes the kid will relax. This might be the first time she’s slouched in front of Calum, she thinks, but she tries to ignore how she knows that.
She knows what she’ll see if she looks over at her boss; him watching her intently with those eyes like stars, some bright fire burning inside him. His eyes have a light to them she can’t escape. She thinks he does it with everyone - he’s been giving her looks like this since the interview, after all.
Sometimes she likes to pretend it’s just for her, though. She can feel the fabric of his suit pants brushing against her bare leg, and sometimes the warm weight of his thigh when the car turned the corner. This backseat doesn’t nearly feel big enough for the three of them, all in a row. She can’t believe her brain’s going haywire just because he’s close.
She focuses on the child beside her, on the science. That’s what she knows, not people. She knows the proteins and serums they’re made of, but even her own human heart is confusing. “Scientific writing can be - it’s hard to be accurate and interesting at the same time. It’s kind of stupid. But, hey, we’ve got like, fifteen minutes of this car ride, if you have any questions I’ll answer them.” She says.
“You don’t have to,” she hears, and Calum touches her elbow softly. It burns through her cardigan. How does he do that? “Dick knows you’re not here to entertain him.” She turns to look at him, catches his eye, and oh- it’s that look, she knew it.
Her mouth goes dry. She tries to ignore it.
“Nah, it’s my pleasure. You haven’t let me talk about science for two weeks, I’m deprived.” She finds it in her to scold right back. She controls her movement as she turns back to Dick Grayson, so it doesn’t look like she’s trying to break his gaze before she combusts. “Anything I can help you understand?”
“What’s an ATP?”
That’s how Aspen spends the car ride, then, instead of thinking about the man beside her. It seems to work; by the time they reach the venue she’s not as jittery, as raw, as she might be. And hey, to his credit, Dick is a good kid; he’s excited to learn what he can and he laughs at her jokes. Aspen likes that in anyone.
The venue is the Gotham Botanical Gardens, which Aspen is also real excited about. She’s going to sneak into the greenhouses if she gets the chance, but for now she keeps pace with Mr. Hood and Dick Grayson as they weave their way through the armed guards. There’s at least two cop cars that she can see - it all seems a little extreme to her, but it’s Gotham. She glances over at Dick - he seems a little freaked out, too. At least it’s not just her delicate sensibilities.
As soon as they’re into the ballroom - ballroom, Jesus, this city is extravagant when it gets the chance - Calum is dragged away by a harried man in a very nice suit. Someone shows Aspen to a table and introduces her to the woman who’ll be making sure any checks that are written don’t go missing. Renee Montoya has a gun at her hip and iron in her stare, but Aspen gets her talking about her work and eventually the woman warms up. Things seem to be going smoothly with the preparations (she’s keeping an eye on Calum, it’s her job, okay?) when suddenly there’s a BANG and someone screams.
Montoya actually pushes Aspen behind her as she takes out her gun, all in one smooth motion, and half the cops around the room are doing the same, searching for the source of the noise.
It’s happening. This is it. Aspen looks for Calum instinctively, can’t find him, oh, shi-
“Shit, goddamn it- we’re okay, everybody, Jesus, this kid-”
Time unfreezes. The police officer who swore is clutching his wrist, almost doubled over, but there’s no blood. Aspen lowers her fists. She’s not sure when she got into a fighting stance, but as she relaxes and the officers lower their guns she feels a little silly for it.
They’re all on edge, she supposes.
Her next thought is to find Dick. There’s only one kid in this building, at least as far as she knows, and she does not underestimate his capacity for trouble.
Another look around find both him and Calum - Aspen feels like she’s intruding, seeing them hug on the other side of the ballroom. Plus of course he’s a good father figure, because apparently the universe hates her and wants her to suffer.
She supposes she’s gotten attached to Dick, that’s why she strides over as they start to part. Dick isn’t crying, but he does look a moment from it when she comes up. Aspen’s not exactly nurturing, she doesn’t know if she can help, but she wants to. “Hey, you doing alright? What happened?” She asks him.
Dick looks up at Calum, who nods at him to tell her. It’s sweet. “I was looking for the bathroom and the officer found me. I think he thought I was lost, but he grabbed my shoulder an’ I didn’t know he was there and I panicked. I made a mistake.”
Aspen can’t blame him for being shaken. “Well, it is bad manners to grab people.” She says. Dick kind of cracks a smile at that. “Hey, it’s only a mistake if you let it happen again, that’s what I think. Don’t worry too much about it.”
When she glances up, Calum is smiling. “Do you mind staying with Dick until the guests start to arrive?” He asks her. “The planner’s had three separate crises since we got here.”
Aspen nods. “I’m good with that as long as you are.” She says to Calum’s ward, who looks unsure, but nods.
That’s a good sign. She’s glad he’s okay.
As soon as Calum’s gone she focuses in on the boy, who looks at her solidly. He is a little old for her to be babysitting him, but for now she’s free to goof around, so she doesn’t mind. “Did you find anything cool while you were looking for the bathroom? I’ve been trying to sneak into the greenhouses since we got here.”
“Just the kitchens.” Dick says, shaking his head.
Fuck yes. “Just the kitchens? Buddy, we gotta check it out. I’m sure if you look sad and cute enough they’ll give us all kinds of leftovers.”
“You think?”
“Give me your best puppy-dog eyes.” Aspen says.
Dick complies.
“Jesus, you are good. Those chefs aren’t gonna know what hit them.”

Prompt request! Could you do a Curtis sister one shot where the sister (you can determine how old), is vision or hearing impaired?? :)
Okay, so, this got a little away from the prompt, I think. But I think it’s my best, nonetheless. Tuesday belongs to @sixties-sodapop.
Masterlist: here
Warnings: violet trauma, loss, car accident
Loss
When I woke up, everything was dark and eerily quiet. I blinked my eyes several times, trying to clear them, but it didn’t seem to help.
I turned my head to the side, and felt something wrapped around my head. Confusion spread over my body- and something else, too. I couldn’t place it, but goosebumps spread down my arms, making my hair stand on end.
Was…was this dread?
We were…we were just out to do a little grocery shopping. Me, mom, and dad, too. The boys wanted to stay home. But, Darry and I were going away to college soon. I wanted to spend all the time I could with them before I left.
Mom suggested we stop in at one of the clothing shops afterwards and get me a couple new outfits while dad went to check out the sporting good’s store- to see if he could find something for Darry and his coming football career.
“It’s hot in Texas,” she had told me. “You’re gonna want more shorts, right?”
Panic welled up inside of me and I sat up, quickly. Something pulled in the bend of my elbow. With my other hand, I reached over and felt something taped to my arm. Terror clawed up my throat and my chest started heaving but-
That’s weird. I know I’m breathing- I can feel it. Why-why can’t I hear it? I should be able to hear… What-what the-
I felt someone sit down on the side of- was I in a bed? They put their hands on top of my arms. I could tell they were trying to calm me down but they’re not telling me what’s happened or why I’m here. It just made it worse.
After we’d gotten everything mom thought I’d needed for school next year, we headed out. Dad had finished before we did, and he was waiting at the car with a smile and a milkshake for each of us. Two vanillas for him and mom, strawberry for me.
“Don’t tell the boys,” he’d said. “Our little secret.” He held a hand up to his lips. It made me giggle. I loved my parents very much.
The person sitting on the bed with me was talking. I could feel the vibration of words through their hands. I paused, trying to listen. I shook my head. Nothing worked. They stopped and shifted a little.
Whoever it was stood up again, but they moved closer to me. Their shirt barely brushed my arm, but I still felt it. My head bobbed slightly. What was around my head? A bandage? Whatever it was, it was being unwound.
With each layer gone, light slowly filtered in. A mesh pattern filled my eyes. Gauze. It was a bandage. I blinked a few times, trying to clear my thoughts and my memory. What on earth happened?
Once we’d gotten rid of any milkshake-y evidence, we were on the road back home. I was animatedly going on about what I’d read about the campus and the town surrounding it.
“There are tons of jobs for students, too,” I informed them. “So maybe I can get one and help pay for my books or somethin’.”
“That’s great, honey,” dad replied, smiling at me from the rear view mirror. Mom sighed, happily.
“I’m so happy you two are goin’ to college,” she started. She reached across the front console and squeezed dad’s arm. “We never had the opportunity and I’m overjoyed that you both have somethin’ that you’re passionate about. I just hope Pony and Soda are the same way.”
The gauze was lifted from my face. The bright lights made me squint and I lifted one hand to shield them. The pull in my arm was back, so I glanced down and saw an IV sticking out. I felt my face drain of blood and my head swam, my body threatening to pass out.
I felt fingers under my chin and a gentle tug. I looked up and saw my twin brother sitting on the bed in front of me. But he-he looked…something was wrong.
Something was very wrong.
I grinned wide enough to show my teeth. She was right. I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Darry, too.
I was really excited about being on my home, too. I was going to miss everyone here, sure, but this was a new chapter in my life. If that’s not exciting, then I don’t know what is.
“Oh, shoot,” mom said from the front seat. “I forgot flour while we were out.”
“That’s alright, honey,” dad assured her. “We aren’t too far away from the store. We’ll just go back real quick.” He flipped his turn signal on and slowed down the car to turn.
Darry’s face was different. His eyes were puffy, dark circles underneath. His cheeks were sunken, and his lips so pale they were nearly white. He looked sick. My brow furrowed and I looked around the rest of the room.
I was in a hospital room. Sodapop was asleep in a chair on the other side of the room, his chin resting against his chest, and his long, greasy hair hanging over his eyes. Ponyboy was curled up in the empty bed to the right of me, covered with a thin hospital blanket. His nose was red, his closed eyes puffy.
My eyes slid back to Darry.
“Tuesday?” he said. Or, I assumed that’s what he said. I mean- I know what my own name looks like on other peoples’ lips.
The only problem was that.. I couldn’t hear it.
Dad looked both ways before turning. That is one thing I remember distinctly, because what happened next seemed so ridiculous to me.
He started pulling back out onto the road. When I turned to look out my window, I saw him. He’d come out of nowhere, driving fast. So, so fast.
I didn’t have time to do anything more than gasp before he smashed right into our car.
“Darry?” I said. I felt my voice working, my mouth forming the word. But…there was no sound…
My brother must’ve been able to read it on my face. He turned towards the door and my eyes followed. A man in a white coat was heading in, a nurse with a clipboard on his heels. Her mouth was moving. He reached back for the paperwork. She reached out and handed it to him.
The doctor and Darry talked back and forth for a few minutes. My eyes followed the conversation, trying to pick up on words, but they were speaking too fast. Finally, I got fed up.
“What’s happened?” I yelled. They both stopped and turned to me with wide eyes. Soda jumped awake in his chair.
The force of the impact to the front of the car forced my body to one side. I hit my head against the window next to me. It made me groan, loudly and I heard a ringing in my ears.
Time seemed to slow and I saw mom turn to look at me.
“Tuesday!” she cried.
“Mom?”
But, the car wasn’t finished moving.
My brother heaved a sigh and nodded to the doctor, who was eyeing him, waiting for an answer. He handed the file to me. I set it down in my lap and started reading.
Tuesday Lynn Curtis. Okay, that’s me.
Car accident. Right. With mom and dad.
Trauma to head. D-detached retinas. Reattached through surgery.
W-what?
Temporal bone fracture. Ruptured ear drums. Surgical repairment, but permanent loss of hearing possible.
I’m…deaf?
A tear fell onto the paper under me. The ink welled up in the drop.
I looked up at Darry, eyes wide, unwanted tears streaming down my cheeks. His entire face was a picture of grief. He averted his eyes from mine and nodded.
The car that had just crashed into us kept going. I could hear the squeal of brakes, but it wasn’t fast enough.
Our car started flipping.
The impact was so hard- the driver in the other car driving so fast- our car turned over in the air multiple times. My seatbelt cut into my neck and I couldn’t control my arms as they flung out with the movement.
My head bounced off the window a few more times.
When the car finally slid to a stop, completely upside down, the edges of my vision were fuzzy.
The last thing I remember before blacking out completely is seeing my father’s glassy, unfocused eyes in the rear view mirror, blood dripping from his ear to the roof of the car.
“Mom? A-and dad?” I said, my voice shaky.
Tears welled up in my brother’s eyes. He took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to keep himself from breaking.
Darry shook his head.
A sob escaped my lips and I threw the clipboard. It hit the wall and landed on the floor. I dropped my face into my hands and bawled. I’m sure they were loud, awful, heartbreaking cries.
I’d never felt anguish before. I imagine this is what it felt like.
I felt Darry gather me up in his arms. His shoulders shook as he cried with me. I don’t know how long we sat like that. It had to have been a long time.
When we separated, my other two brothers were sitting on the other side of the bed. Their faces- they broke my heart even more than it already was. Pony was sniffling and wiping his nose, but Soda held up a piece of paper for me to see.
We’ll get through this together.
