To the world, sincerely, a tired black artists and my fellow creatives
A lot of the weird demonization of Rema’s visuals really made me sad. I’m not surprised at the lack of cultural knowledge about Edo people and Benin City, Nigeria — virtually everywhere outside of the continent, African history, culture and traditions aren’t taught unless you are in special programs or majors. But to call something demonic and satanic because you don’t understand? The blatant xenophobia and racism has me so furious. I know we have a lot of unlearning to do, but I had imagined that the colonial ways of viewing black Africans was not alive and thriving amongst the diaspora. To see so many black Christian’s come together in the name of their white gods and forced religion to call something so sentimental, historically important and significant for Rema and many others demonic is like having a weird ‘dejavu’.
Everyday I think about how I see too many people complain about lack of representation of black people from all around the world in media; wether it be movies, tv, fiction, music genre and other industries predominantly white — and now, given visuals and such cool performance, we do as our oppressors once did. Word for word. It’s disgusting and I hope everybody who partook educated themselves and do better.
When will my people know peace when it comes to trying to share, showcase and be proud of what we’ve created? I never forgot how Fufu became a laughing stock, how so many still mock their parents pronunciations knowing that’s their third of even fourth language. And don’t let me start on Nollywood or the diasporic movie industries — why must you laugh when you don’t understand? Question things, yes, be curious and explore. But mocking?
To all my fellow Africans and black people of the diaspora— one day, we will be in a world where we’re known for more then our struggles. Where were not mocked for our ‘incorrect’ speech of languages violently forced upon us, that we adapted to fit who we are and our origins. One day we will have peace; no more silent genocides, or loud ones. No more having to hide our roots, traditions, practices, art/creations. Be ashamed of any aspects of our culture that does not warrant shame.
I ask that if you want representation, you seek it out because trust me it is out there. The continent has so many creations — sure some harder to find or consume due to language barriers but we all witnessed K-drama’s boom. You can watch French, Spanish and English films — so why are subtitles not good enough when it’s in Igbo? Xhosa? Wolof? Zulu? Bafang?
I ask that everybody, including myself, start to give africa it’s flowers. The more we pour into the good — art, creations, industries etc that inspire more to create and expand, the more we will see the uprise of what has always been within the continent but never given much thought by most of the world because it is African and the quality is regarded as ‘lesser’.
And I hope I get to witness more great artist come from all around the motherland, and be part amongst them when I eventually complete my African/Black centered work ✌🏾

Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 13 (05/27/2023)
You know, I thought that I will be overwhelmed by this week. I mean we got Eurovision this week and just how massive the first two Eurovision was in this decade. So color me surprised that we didn't get an onslaught of Eurovision songs. Though some of them might have to do with them have debuted before so I have talked about it (check it out in my bio). But this means that it made this week manageable at least.

11. "Acrostico" by Shakira
Actually we won't be starting with an Eurovision song, instead we have a heartfelt ballad from Shakira and her kids. I'm so glad that this song exist. Not only because she's making music again on her own, but also as a healing process from her divorce.
13. "Cha Cha Cha" by Kaarija
From heartfelt to the downright batshit insane. This is basically the Zitti e Buono of 2023 but it didn't win the whole thing which is a robbery. It would've been great if Finnish language actually existed.
29. "Queen of Kings" by Alessandra
This is basically just what happened when you mixed Billie Eilish with pirate theme music soundtracking your local League of Legends tournament.
37. "The Planet" by BTS
Seems like BTS saw the success of Arcane and Imagine Dragon and thought "yes this soundtracking animated movie will turned out well". And it's as expected as what "BTS soundtracking animated film" would sound like.
46. "All My Life" by Lil Durk ft. J Cole
I'm of two minds about this song. On one hand, the subject matter here is just perfect where both Durk and Cole talking about a lot of systemic issues during the come up with interesting details. Durk referencing how stimulus check works in his environment and how he's trying to better himself which is a plus in my opinion. While Cole in the middle of talking about his legacy, talk about how the media talked and hyperfocusing on rapper's death and how people weren't paying attention to them before it's too late. On the other hand, this beat is kinda suck. One thing that I've learned over the years is that Dr. Luke shouldn't producing trap rap song. Like seriously just some keys, trap drums, and sub bass? Also we don't need to bring back child choir again. I guess we'll see if this song will grew on me, but right not it's just on the upper side of decent.
81. "Queencard" by (G)I-DLE
Ahhh yes this is the Kpop shit I love. Garrish, a lot of personalities with no substance, and ridiculous. It's the same reason why I love HIP by MAMAMOO and while this song is slightly worse, I can't deny the groove here.
142. "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine
Finally my critical card has been upgraded since I'm reviewing a Florence + The Machine stuff! Well anyways this song is definitely a perfect send off (or in this case dance off) to a movie franchise.
153. "Unicorn" by Noa Kirel
First off Free Palestine. Secondly, I think if you want to justify your inclusion in the Eurovision Israel, you should just remake Toy for the rest of your country's life because this ain't it.
168. "Cartao Black" by MC Caverinha e KayBlack
Seems like dreary trap banger will be universal even in different language. Also seems like I need to learn more Portuguese and Spanish more because I can at least marginally pronounced the words.
175. "Soweto" by Victony, Rema & Tempoe ft. Don Toliver
It's kinda mad that this is the first time I talked about afrobeat song in my review series even though I really love it. I think everything about Afrobeat I love so I might be biased here but man the guitar and that drum is just heavenly. Also Don Toliver is actually perfect in afrobeat it's insane.
192. "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar & Lucenzo
How the hell does this song didn't debut during the world cup? This song is basically a jock jam for me.
193. "Abcdario" by Eden Munoz X Junior H
...it's fine
199. "Life Goes On" by Ed Sheeran ft. Luke Combs
I have a lot of contender of best songs of 2023, but we have another contender here. As someone who also lost a friend and during the pandemic even, I can feel the emotion here unlike say Eyes Closed. This version is just soul crushing and if this is gonna be his last hit before he went indie or even retired, then what a way to go dude. Take care Ed.
I highly recommend everyone to listen to these songs.

headcanon; Okay. Partner pokemon. This should be a quick one because it's reiterating a fairly simple concept. But first: go read the dragon force headcanon. Do it, or else.
A minor housekeeping note: my canons took up the practice of having our muses refer to pokemon, prior to the invention of pokeballs, as "maju(u)", meaning "magical creatures," because it was canonically used in (i believe) the jpn version of the Arceus film. Y'know, the one where they go back in time. Basically: it was just the snappiest word we had and saved us from coming up with something new. I will not be doing this in this headcanon just for the sake of clarity, but know that, like, diegetically, they're majuu.
So, now that you've read the Dragon Force headcanon: because of the dragon force and Isshurem, the concept of maintaining peace and a healthy society was incredibly important in Isshu culture. "armoni" (harmony) and "unovi" (unity) were very much spiritual concepts and considered critical to the overall well-being of the Dragon Force (also known as Konir-Rema or Auri-Rema)
This was the main reason the practice of taking partner pokemon began - as an act of armoni(r), of maintaining balance and harmony. BUT! there's another belief associated with them:
See, everything has Aura. A soul, a particular energy that is unique to that person. It was believed that every person had a pokemon who's aura perfectly resonated with their own. "This is my hole, it was made for me," to be incredibly cursed about it. IT’s harmony in the pure musical sense, of two notes that compliment one another. Finding the pokemon that you had ��unova” with was considered something of a rite of passage growing up, the same way children becoming pokemon trainers is in the modern world. It was a hugely important piece of a child/young adult’s self-discovery.
Noteworthy: this is incredibly close to the concept of perfect links in pokemon conquest. Yes, that’s another headcanon I just linked to. Don’t judge me. Isshu legend would suggest that people were, at one point, capable of “linking” with their pokemon the way warriors in Ransei are known to, but it was a skill lost over centuries. However, this “resonance” still existed as a remnant of that.
As such, people were identified strongly with their partner pokemon. Not only did their associated “element” (read: type) determine how a person referred to themselves (see the language headcanon), but one marriage tradition had couples exchange emblems of their partner pokemon, so the couple would always (symbolically) be together.
Bonus: not just human/pokemon duos could have “unova.” It referred to just about any unshakeable bond. The word “unovan” could also be interpreted as something like brotherhood: while it was a relationship you might have with someone by nature, it was also something you could forge with another person.

Øhm ok i wanted to do this before the party yesterday but now im doing on the train on my way home home on the train
Yesterdayyyy i woke up gave red their fucking vacumm back and we went to school its fucking foggy all the time rn
We had film to start of with we learnt about editing, and omg were watching bits of this one movie AND I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENDS am going insane. But we were in a group of me red a dude who ive become freinds with calleddddd "mail" cause its funny we had the edit this one clip and omg its was so funny me and red had to be acting togheter and holy shit we cant act omg. But theyre was this one girl in our class omg i felt so bad they dont say a lot at all and suddenly they just dissapeered and red was talking about how they werent talking alot and they were scared of keeping them iut if the projekt i added it was their own peoblem and suddenly they emerge from behind this cirner say they were sorry they dident talk alot and we felt so badd ahhhh red tried to comfort them but i think they went home after class wa.
They we had history it was fine i understood more this time but i still hate the way it teached cause it such an intresting subjeckt SO WHY DONT I UNDERSTAND SHIT UR SAYING.
Then we had math and i drew smallish beans and red said we should cosplay hermitcraft togheter i hope we can do it could be so fuuuunn.
After school i found out my back bike whell of my bike WITH UNBREAKABLE wheels had a fucking punctured wheel im screaming mail fixes it but the air was out before we were homing and omg i was sweating on my way home it gets 10 degress varmer on the way home every day so its super cold and then its super varm so im always SWEATING on the way home.
But i got home and procrastinated taking a shower for two hours on tiktok when i finally took a shower i realised it hink im losing weight?! And i dont know how to feel about it. At boarding school always felt horrible cause they gave us so much food and we never really did anything physical so i always felt bad eating wich is fucking stupid and now its like im never really hungry in the same was also i bike 10 km every day so i guess its nice but also wtf.
Anyway after my shower i made the best pb and j with banana ever and called my bf to watch 2 episodes of stranger things YIPPE we also just yapped alot and i hung up my posters i live my bf hes so cute.
I was also weirdly overstimulated after my shower but not overwhelmed more in the way that i could feel my hair in my face, my clothes touching my skin and just EVERYTHING also my toes touching and that everything was sticking to my feet ew ew ew.
But i put a hat on some comfy clothes and socks and it was only a midly horrible.
Then i died for tan hour tryin to figure out what to wear to the party cause it was fucking childs birthday themed. I landed on twd shirt with short pants funky socks and converse yippe.
Then i struggeld to find kale to go to rema but o found them we struggeld to find ea who had a car or somthing. And then mail the whimsical just kinda s p a w n e d. But the car dident car so we just walked to rema and i got some smirnoff and energy drink and alchohol and an AMERICAN lollypop i mean it fit the theme but mail kept saying i was patriotic?! BARBECUE BACON BURGER we go tot the party and then we left to make mails gross gross microwave burger and his choclate milk 😭 i had a LOT of energy oh and red spawned even tho they dislike parties. I went back and fourth frlm the party to them and i drank some smirnoff and here it gets a bittt blurry me and mail had a bit with BARBECUE BACON BURGER cause both him and red dont drink so they were just following me around eventually i got a drink from the bar and omfg shit just tasted like straight up vodka omfg it was eww i also paid some one for a party hat but i paid them with the rest of my lollipop pls wtf😭 i also called viggo at some point and me and mail kept screaming BARBECUE BACON BURGER at eachother omg.
I also called viggo at somepoint THEN I WON IN UNO AGAIN RED AND MAIL YIPPE im a god at uno fr fr. I ran around a lot it was fun i also did reds dishesss?? And mail walked me home at like 23 or somthing and called viggo and went to beddd. OH SHIT RED TOOK A VIDEO OF ME OH NO i tried to do the HOTTOGO dance and i failed oh noooooo

EDDIE HENDERSON, LE TROMPETTISTE DE L’AME

Né le 26 octobre 1940 à New York, Eddie Henderson est issu d’une famille musicale. Son père avait fait partie du groupe Billy Williams and the Charioteers, le plus populaire ensemble vocal de couleur des années 1940. Sa mère avait été danseuse au célèbre Cotton Club et était amie avec Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan et Lena Horne.
Henderson avait neuf ans au moment de la mort de son père. Henderson avait quatorze ans lorsque sa mère s’était remariée avec un médecin de San Francisco où la famille était déménagée en 1954. Même si son beau-père ne l’avait pas vraiment encouragé à poursuivre une carrière musicale, Henderson avait étudié la trompette, le flugelhorn et la théorie de 1954 à 1956 au San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Il avait même joué avec le San Francisco Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. Mais comme Henderson l’avait expliqué plus tard, il en avait alors beaucoup à apprendre et ne connaissait pratiquement rien du jazz à l’époque. Il avait déclaré: “I could play the trumpet, but I knew nothing about jazz.”
Son beau-père étant le médecin de plusieurs musiciens célèbres comme John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie et Duke Ellington, cela avait permis à Henderson d’être présenté à nul autre que Miles Davis, qui avait même habité dans la maison de ses parents lors d’un de ses passages dans la ville en 1957. Davis, qui s’était pris d’affection pour Henderson, qui était encore adolescent à l’époque, l’emmenait même à ses concerts. Comme Henderson l’avait expliqué plus tard, “That’s when the musical light came on.’’ Conscient du potentiel d’Henderson comme trompettiste, Davis avait continué de l’encourager tout au long de sa carrière. Après la mort de Davis, Henderson lui avait éventuellement rendu hommage en mai 2002 en participant à l’enregistrement de l’album So What, qui comprenait des pièces associées au trompettiste. Comme Henderson l’avait précisé à l’époque, “Miles is so very special to me because when I was in high school he stayed in my parent’s house when he came through San Francisco. I was going to the conservatory then studying classical music. I saw him do all these songs live that I recorded on the tribute album.” Durant son adolescence, Henderson avait également fréquenté de grands noms du jazz comme John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Philly Joe Jones et Wynton Kelly, qu’il avait rencontrés dans le cadre d’un festival de musique local.
Henderson avait été exposé pour la première fois à la trompette par Sarah Vaughan, qui l’avait emmené au célèbre Théâtre Apollo de Harlem pour assister à un concert de Louis Armstrong. C’est d’ailleurs Armstrong qui avait donné ses premières leçons à Henderson, grâce aux relations que sa mère avait au Cotton Club. Après avoir suivi des cours pendant un an, Henderson avait joué la pièce “Flight of the Bumble Bee” devant Armstrong, qui lui avait fait cadeau plus tard d’un livre contenant les transcriptions de ses solos et dans lequel il avait écrit la décicace: “To Little Eddie. You sure sound good. Keep playing. Love, Satchmo.”
Très fier de son enfance, Henderson avait ainsi résumé ses débuts dans la musique:
‘’I have a pretty imposing show business heritage. My mother was one of the dancers in the original Cotton Club. She had a twin sister, and they were called The Brown Twins, and they used to dance with Bill ‘’Bojangles’’ Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers. That film of Fats Waller doing ‘’Ain’t Misbehavin’’’ where the lady sits on the piano and he sings to her ? That’s my mother. And my father sang with Bill Williams and the Charioteers, who were like the number one black singing group in thje nation - over and above the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers.
My real father died when I was nine, and my mother remarried a doctor in San Francisco, and so I guess that influenced me to pursue medicine as well. But I never stopped the music. Ever since I was nine years old. Louis Armstrong was literally my first trumpet teacher, in person, because my mother knew all of these people. Duke Ellington, Count Basie. Billie Holiday was my mother’s roommate. Sarah Vaughan was my mother’s roommate. She knew Dizzy Gillespie from her days dancing in the chorus line in front of Cab Calloway’s big band, when Dizzy was just starting out in the section. All these people used to come over to the house, and to me they were just average people. Little did I know’’ (rires).
Après avoir étudié durant un an à l’Université de San Francisco, Henderson s’était querellé avec son beau-père et avait décidé de ‘’faire un homme de lui’’ et de se joindre à l’US Air Force en 1958. Désapprouvant sa décision de devenir musicien, son beau-père avait même qualifié Henderson de “bum on the waterfront.’’ Loin de se décourager, Henderson s’était servi de ces critiques pour aller plus loin. Comme il l’avait expliqué des années plus tard: “I had to fill my commitment of spite to my stepfather just to prove him wrong.”
Passionné de patinage sur glace, Henderson s’était vu refuser l’entrée d’un club de patinage de San Francisco à son arrivée en Californie en raison de sa couleur, mais il avait obtenu sa revanche dans l’armée en se joignant au Denver Figure Skating Club. De fait, Henderson excellait tellement comme patineur qu’il avait remporté une médaille de bronze dans le cadre des Midwestern Figure Skating Championships à Minneapolis en 1960, devenant ainsi le premier Afro-Américain à se mériter cet honneur.
Stationné à la Lowry Air Force Base de Denver au Colorado, Henderson avait quitté l’Air Force en 1961 pour entreprendre une formation préparatoire en médecine à l’Université de Californie à Berkeley avant d’entrer à l’école médicale de l’Université Howard à Washington, D.C. Étudiant studieux et appliqué, Henderson avait quand même trouvé le temps de jouer de la trompette dans les clubs le soir et de se rendre à New York pour entendre les plus grands noms du jazz durant les weekends. Henderson expliquait: “I never missed a class in high school or medical school. I would go to class from 8am to 5pm every day, then go home and study, from 5:15 to 9:15pm, and then from 9:15 until 2am learn how to play jazz.’’ Même si ses confrères étudiants avaient prédit que cette routine rigoureuse finirait par le rattraper, Henderson avait décroché son diplôme avec succès alors que plusieurs de ses pairs avaient échoué.
DÉBUTS DE CARRIÈRE
Après avoir décroché un bacclauréat en zoologie de l’Université de Californie à Berkekey en 1964 et une maîtrise en médecine de l’Université Howard quatre ans plus tard, Henderson était retourné à San Francisco où il avait fait son internat de 1968 à 1969. Poursuivant parallèlement sa carrière musicale, Henderson avait aussi joué à l’occasion avec John Handy, Joe Henderson, Big Black et Philly Joe Jones.
De 1969 à 1971, Henderson était devenu médecin-résident au Clinical Research Ward, qui était rattaché au Langley-Porter Institute de l’Université de Californie à Berkeley. Il était alors assez inhabituel pour un Afro-Américain d’obtenir un poste de médecin-résident. Comme l’expliquait le Dr Ira Glick, qui dirigeait le programnme de résidence de Berkeley à l’époque: “It was unusual to have an African American in the residency at that time. Eddie was a very interesting guy, very smart. He worked all day as a resident and played nights in the Fillmore district.” Glick et Henderson ne s’étaient pas revus jusqu’en 2019, alors que le trompettiste était allé présenter une lecture à La Nouvelle-Orléans en 2019.
Henderson s’était particulièrement fait connaître comme membre du groupe Mwandishi d’Herbie Hancock dont il avait fait partie de 1970 à 1973 et avec qui il avait enregistré trois albums, Mwandishi (1971), Crossings (1972) et Sextant (1973). Parmi les membres du groupe, on remarquait outre Henderson et Hancock, de brillants jeunes innovateurs comme Bennie Maupin au saxophone, Julian Priester au trombone, Buster Williams à la contrebasse et Billy Hart à la batterie.
Comme il l’avait fait durant ses études à l’école de médecine, Henderson soignait les gens le jour et se produisait le soir dans les clubs comme le célèbre Keystone Korner de San Francisco. Ironiquement, même si plusieurs musiciens de jazz s’étaient mérités le surnom de ‘’Doc’’ (Doc Severinson, Doc Pomus, Doc Cheatham, Doctor John the Night Tripper entre autres), peu d’entre eux étaient de véritables médecins.
Henderson était également très apprécié des musiciens de tournée qui faisaient régulièrement appel à lui pour les accompagner dans le cadre de leurs concerts. En 1972, Henderson avait publié un premier album comme leader, Realization, qui avait été suivi d’Inside Out l’année suivante. Les albums avaient été enregistrés avec Hancock et les autres membres du groupe Mwandishi. Ironiquement, même si Henderson avait obtenu une certaine reconnaissance pour son travail avec Hancock, ses propres albums avaient souvent été considérés comme trop ‘’commerciaux’’ par les critiques.
De 1968 jusqu’à la fin des années 1980, Henderson avait continué d’alterner entre la musique et la médecine. Le fait d’avoir joué avec Hancock avait d’ailleurs ouvert des portes à Henderson. Comme il l’avait expliqué lui-même,
‘’When I was in San Francisco, for 10 or 11 years while I was practicing medicine, I would be at the Keystone Korner every night and all the major groups, all my heroes, who came through to play would hire me to play with them. All the iconic groups, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, they’d all hire me because I had played with Herbie Hancock. I didn’t have to move to New York to play with these greats. That allowed me to play while I was still practicing medicine. I had a very lucrative career in San Francisco.’’
Après la dissolution du groupe Mwandishi en 1973, Henderson avait travaillé avec d’autres grands noms du jazz comme Pharoah Sanders, Norman Connors, Mike Nock, les Jazz Messengers d’Art Blakey (durant trois mois jusqu’à ce que Blakey décide de couper son salaire !), Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, Johnny Griffin, Bobby Hutcherson, Billy Harper, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, Max Roach et McCoy Tyner.
Retourné dans la région de la baie de San Francisco en 1975, Henderson avait travaillé dans une clinique de Haight-Ashbury comme médecin généraliste. Henderson précisait: “It was an ideal situation. I never wore a suit. A lot of patients were street people.”
Au cours de la même période, Henderson s’était joint au groupe de jazz latin Azteca. Il avait également dirigé ses propres groupes. Le travail d’Henderson avec des groupes de jazz-fusion était d’ailleurs évident sur les autres albums qu’il avait enregistrés comme leader, dont Sunburst (1975) et Heritage (1976). Henderson avait même obtenu un grand succès sur le palmarès Billboard avec le simple “Prance On” tiré de l’album Comin’ Through (1977). La pièce, qui avait également connu du succès en Grande-Bretagne, avait atteint la 44e position du palmarès britannique en novembre 1978.
ÉVOLUTION RÉCENTE
Après avoir pris sa retraite de la médecine en 1985, Henderson était devenu musicien à temps plein. À l’époque, sa mère était très malade, et Henderson avait tout laissé tomber pour lui venir en aide. Il expliquait: ‘’In 1985, my mother called me and said she couldn’t make it financially anymore by herself in New York because she was sick. I dropped everything, quit my practice, and moved back to New York to help my mother. I worked at the transit authority for about six months, but my musical career was really taking off, so I quit that job.’’ La mère d’Henderson est finalement décédée en 1994.
Après s’être longtemps fait connaître comme musicien de jazz-fusion, Henderson était retourné vers un jazz plus acoustique dans les années 1990.
Au cours de sa carrière, Henderson avait enregistré vingt-six albums comme leader, en plus de collaborer à une douzaine d’autres albums comme accompagnateur. Aujourd’hui âgé de quatre-vingt-quatre ans, Henderson dirige toujours son propre groupe, The Cookers, avec qui il voyage régulièrement en tournée. Préoccupé par l’avenir de la relève, Henderson tente également de transmettre sa passion du jazz aux nouvelles générations comme professeur au Oberlin College’s Conservatory of Music. Depuis 2007, il enseigne également à la Juillard School of Music. Décrivant son travail de mentor, Henderson avait précisé:
’’I think it’s so important to pass on the things I’ve learned in my career to the upcoming generation of talented musicians who, just like me, want to pursue a career in music. It’s like a relay race. I’m just passing the baton of the knowledge that I got from my predecessors to them so that the tradition can go on into the future. Another joy I get from my students is it keeps me on my toes. A lot of them are very talented—it makes me start practicing! [chuckles] I’ve learned a lot from them, too. It’s a reciprocal process and that’s the beauty of it.’’
Commentant sa passion pour la musique, Henderson avait expliqué: “I couldn’t be a good doctor unless I was healed, and music is the thing that heals me. Music is like therapy—it puts me at ease with who I am. Then I can relate to other people and spread the joy.” Marié à Natsuko Henderson, Henderson est également le père de Cava Menzies, une musicienne et éducatrice. La mère et la fille d’Henderson ont d’ailleurs écrit certaines des compositions de ses albums.
En 2024, Eddie Henderson a fait l’objet d’un documentaire de Michelle Carpenter intitulé ‘’Dr. Eddie Henderson: Uncommon Genius.’ Le film a été présenté en grande première sur les ondes du réseau PBS. On a également consacré une exposition à Henderson intitulée ‘’Time and Spaces: The Life of Eddie Henderson.’’ L’exposition a été présentée du 1er février au 21 avril 2024 à la U Denver Experience Gallery.
Considéré comme un des meilleurs trompettistes de l’histoire du jazz, Henderson est particulièrement reconnu pour la subtilité de son jeu même s’il avait toujours été un peu sous-estimé. Lorsqu’il avait publié l’album Inspiration en 1995, Henderson n’avait pas enregistré avec une compagnie de disques majeure en deux décennies. L’année suivante, Henderson avait publié Dark Shadows, qu’il considérait comme un des sommets de sa carrière. Il expliquait: ‘’I think Dark Shadows has a little more depth, musically and emotionally. It represents the way I like to play - very much of an ensemble thing. I like painting a collective musical picture rather than a self-portrait. That’s the way I feel about music in general.’’ Commentant l’enregistrement de l’album, Henderson avait ajouté:
‘’In terms of everything that was going on my life at the time, it was apropos. My mother passed away while I was making this album, and my wife Natsuko Henderson was a source of great love and support to me during those times, allowing me to be a creative person - she’s the most important person in my life. I think that accounts in part for the reflective mood of the album. I actually recorded ‘’Goodbye’’ shortly before my mother passed. Things like that have a way of seeping into your being. So I have a thing for that tune - I hate to say goodbye.’’
L’album avait été enregistré avec un quartet composé du pianiste Kevin Hays, du contrebassiste Ed Howard et du batteur Lewis Nash. Henderson poursuivait:
‘’I’ve been lucky to have the opportunity to keep this same personnel together for four years, every Monday night at Visiones. So I think that’s a big part of the sound on Dark Shadows. Somebody might make a mistake, and there’s so much compassion between the cats, they just go with you, so overybody plays wrong together. They’ll make it right. They’ll make it sound like it’s an arrangement - that’s the real beauty in playing music together.’’
Dans les notes de pochettes de l’album, le critique Chip Stern avait décrit le style d’Henderson de ‘’nuancé’’ et de ‘’ravissant.’’ Stern avait précisé : ‘’A level of expression forged from contrasting degrees of darkness and light, tender reticence and bodacious exultation. In Eddie Henderson’s hands, the trumpet is a storytelling instrument of tremendous beauty... not as maudlin sentiment but graceful mastery...’’

The tournament finals featured 20 hoopers from across the globe and took place inside District 23, Jordan Brand’s innovative transformation of Paris' diverse 18th arrondissement into a global sports and cultural hub. The athletes advanced through exhilarating, win-or-go-home competitions that embodied Jordan Brand’s bold and defiant spirit, giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their greatness on the world stage.
Griffin and Bah earned unmatched bragging rights, a championship belt, and a partnership with Jordan Brand, which includes a role in the upcoming Air Jordan 40 campaign.
Among those in attendance to witness their crowning performances were Jordan Brand President Sarah Mensah, athletes Chris Paul and Zion Williamson, film director Spike Lee, and District 23 Creative Director Youssouf Fofana.
