WOF tribe Merchant/Trading booth concepts:
Hey folks! This one was the recent winner of this WOF poll, so here’s my concept art that headcannons trading in Pyrrhia.
Read below cut for close-ups of the individual booths + the thought process / headcannons behind the design choices: 👇
Skywings: The Sky Kingdom’s mountain ranges provide plenty of pasture for raising sheep. As such, Skywing shepherds benefit from traveling to sell their wool, dyes, fabric, and woven tapestries. Many of these merchant tables also include herbs grown exclusively in the mountains, or ibex drinking horns that can be strapped on a dragon’s shoulder & carried in flight.
Along with goods, Skywing merchants may offer sewing services to fix tears, burn marks, or other fabric damage. They are sought out for their quality clothing, and most fabric across Pyrria originated from a Skywing’s talons.
Mudwings: Mudwings’ abundant food & cooking skills are envied almost anywhere in Pyrrhia. Their swamps have fertile soil, responsible for hosting diverse crops which can be purchased as produce at merchant stalls. For those lucky enough to find a traveling Mudwing merchant, the promise of a delicious dish can be whipped up and served at the stall in no time. Along with produce goods, Mudwings sell weaved baskets, spices, and cooking ware.
Sandwings: Sandwing booths offer luxuries of the desert: It’s most common to find accessories such as gold carved jewelry or musical instruments such as drums, lyres, & mandolins for sale. Though, even more sought out across Pyrrhia is Sandwing tattoos/piercings, which are done within the merchant areas. Ink etchings on papyrus paper are stationed outside their tents to showcase designs. All which can be selected, and poked into the skin with a tapping stick and plant dye ink by a trained talon.
Seawings: SeaWings sell a variety of ocean related goods; taking a share in the fish market with Icewings. Outside of food, there are den decorations like driftwood carvings, accessories such as seashell & pearl jewelry, and rope nets weaved by expert Seawing sailors. Some Seawings even sell fishing equipment, canoes, or offer sailor knot tying instructions to curious dragon buyers.
Nightwings: During the war, it was near impossible to find a Nightwing merchant. Most refused to participate in merchant territory, mostly as a way to keep up with their tribe’s mysterious nature.
Though in the more shady, unground parts of the market you can buy from a huge selection of obsidian weaponry, the sharpest in Pyrrhia. No one knew initially how Nightwings smithed so many weapons, or why, until their secret volcano kingdom and the intention to invade the rainforest was discovered. Then forging armor & weapons became clear. Along with a vast armory, for the right price, some Nightwing merchants offer Prophecies & Nightwing Literature (not always guaranteed to always be reliable) and assassin services as well (very reliable).
Rainwings: Though Rainwings haven’t been part of Pyrrhia trading for years, they have a vast hold on dragon medicine. An apothecary of herbs, salves, and remedies are all offered for various ailments due to the rainforest’s abundant resources. Along with medicinal goods, many Rainwings are fruit vendors, promising to any hesitant meat-eating dragons that such an array of flavors isn’t to be missed. Though, their fruit selling pitches often fall flat to most other predominantly meat-eating tribes.
Icewings: Icewings have everything a dragon could need to brace the cold, with a selection of goods only found in the most frigid regions of Pyrrhia. Furs, bone jewelry, and fresh fish (thanks to frost breath) are served on ice. Though Icewings themselves don’t require fur to withstand the cold, it’s considered fashionable and common in upper ranks to wear fur as a status symbol. Since metal is hard to smith without fire & in cold temperatures, fur and bone are more accessible to Icewings for clothing statements.

@lexirosewrites srry if this is too late for u to queue up i was writing it out to a place where i wanted/needed to stop it. this was intended as an ask but then i got too into it & filled it with detail after detail so the majority of it is below the read more
Thinking thoughts abt Steve's canon music taste bc I saw/reblogged a post abt how Steve is shown to listen to alternative rock & punk rather than pop & disco like we all characterize him.
This started as a steddie thing & has morphed into an a/b/o O!Max centric blurb with an elumax agenda, everything is below the cut
world building: in all of my omegaverse AU omegas can give mating bites, and betas also have mating glands they’re just noticeably smaller. also, omegas are able to be reliably identified at birth because they have a noticeably sweeter scent than other babies, once puberty starts omegas no matter their primary gender will get periods, female omegas get a period every month while male omegas get a period every other month. it is my personal headcanon tht betas evolved to assist in various biological needs tht the other designations might need i.e. if a beta is caring for an omega during their heat they’ll start giving off vaguely alpha pheromones/scents & male betas will be able to give their omega partner a smaller knot OR if a an alpha is in rut their beta partner gives off an omegas pheromones/scent while they also begin to produce a moderate amount of slick OR if they are in a throuple with an alpha & an omega they’ll maintain their natural scent during either partners cycle & fulfill the social role of caring for needs like feeding their partners, maintaining the structure of the nest, helping their partners remember to take any medication they take daily
So first picture for me: punk band frontman O!Steve, he & the other omegas in the band have those spiked collars tht look actually dangerous tht they wear as a rebellion against the expectation tht omegas should wear collars in public, he takes birth control but personally doesn't take heat blockers bc he sees it as another way society seeks to police omega autonomy, he semi-regularly throws his shirt off into the crowd during shows (omega nipples r treated like women's nipples in this AU, very scandalous), Steve has an intentionally messy mullet he cut himself & Robin helped dye dark pink, he's imitated jacking off on stage & used fake blood once or twice to make it look like he was jerking it while on his period & ofc he’s done this stunt while on his period a few times too, & he has the nail bat tht he uses to smash already broken equipment tht they fish out of various recycling centers. He's got multiple piercings & several tattoos, he'd get a neck tattoo but the most traditional thing abt him is he wants to mate someone he loves, have pups & a neck tattoo messes up anyone's mating gland.
the majority of his band r also omegas, he's the vocals mostly but he's known to throw on a guitar & step back so the bass player (robin) can step forward for songs they created/rehearsed just for her to perform, he's also done a number of wicked guitar solos, they figure out how to record & burn CDs on their own bc they're thumbing their noses at the industry tht wants to box omegas into bubblegum pop also bc they don't think they'll ever get a record deal.
The band is named Cannibal Impulse, playing around various venues in Chicago. Steve is vocals/2nd guitar, O!Robin is bass, A!Nancy is lead guitar, O!Jonathan is drums, and B!Argyle is part of a throuple with Nancy & Jonathan so he happily acts as a groupie/roadie/pizza bringer. They have a fairly loyal following of local punk enjoyers, especially omegas. For shows Steve & his band mostly wear whatever punk aesthetic they like, steve & robin both tend towards glam punk, Nancy favors a ragged style inspired by 1920s mens fashion, Jonathan likes subdued crust punk, Argyle wears stoner fashion but for their shows he puts on the battle vest Jonathan made him over his typical fashion choices.
Here’s the actual ficlet/set up/idea, idk what the time period is for this exactly, probably a vague late 90s because I want ppl to have cellphones, specifically flip phones. Also warning for implied underage drug (weed) use.
A!Eddie is the frontman to world famous Corroded Coffin & the co-parent to O!Max (he's 33 & was 18 when she was born) she's the result of a rut shared w sugary sweet head banging mosh pit queen B!Chrissy, Max is the best part of his world even if she's entered the stage of teen hood where she's angry at the world & sometimes her parents. He's had to move around once or twice bc his career demanded it, but now they have all settled permanently in Chicago bc the band have put together a music label all their own, Rotten & Revived Records.
Chrissy used to live permanently in San Francisco, working as a paralegal, but when she got an amazing job opportunity in Chicago the family had a very long talk tht included the rest of the band & everyone ended up deciding tht basing everything in Chicago seemed like the right move. The band enjoyed every concert they'd performed in the city, Max had been once or twice so she agreed it wasn't the worst place in the world plus she wanted to b near both of her parents, & Chrissy would live in a two bedroom apartment that’s a bus ride away from the home Eddie bought for himself & Max.
O!Max (full name: Max Riot Cunningson) is 15 almost 16 & she's had a number of heats & gets her period on a schedule tht is still adjusting as her body changes & ofc her mom Chrissy helped her get birth control.
Eddie has to go on tour as the summer kicks off after everyone barely settles into their new homes in Chicago, Max decides to spend the summer in Chicago after going to a few shows of the tour, staying with Chrissy most nights but also in the house Eddie owns as a means to feel independent from time to time. She wanders around most of the summer, seeing museums, eating whatever she wants when Chrissy isn’t looking, and going into a bookstore or music shop every so often. She finds herself in a music store tht had an impressive collection of vinyls & CDs, then she sees the poster for a small concert for some local band happening in the basement of the store, it says 18+ but when she asks the omega cashier (Jonathan) he explains tht no one checks ID as long as you bring the cover charge of $5 & don’t very obviously look like a kid. There’s no alcohol allowed anyway which is why it’s advertised as 18+. Max practically skips out of the store, a new CD and the address/date of the concert on a note paper in her tote bag. The concert is on a night Chrissy agreed she could be at Eddie’s alone. She feels free as a bird.
Night of the concert she eats mac and cheese she made herself for dinner, and begins picking out what to wear. Max is an omega so she’s expected to wear a collar in public which she hates but there’s any number of creeps in the world. She decides on a black collar she got for her birthday the year before. Luckily when your dad is a world famous metal musician you have an endless choice of black as well as any rainbow of color one could want. She chooses to wear a dark purple t-shirt, her custom leather jacket Eddie paid for, her barely decorated faded red battle vest, black jeans ripped at the knees. Max lines her eyes with a color called kohl, and shoves her feet into the work boots her Grandpa Wayne had helped her pick out. Then she’s off through the nighttime to the basement of the music shop.
The basement is lit fairly well, there r seats all along the walls for ppl to take as they need, there’s a few coolers of water bottles guarded by a weasel esque man dressed like a lazy novelist in a zombie apocalypse, a small table of a meager amount of merch, a raised stage tht is set up for the band, the people around her seem to all know each other, a few people glance her way but no one acts as if she shouldn’t be there.
there’s a circle of ppl tht are very openly smoking weed near/behind the merch table, she recognizes the cashier from the other day in the smoking circle so she approaches because he’s the one person she recognizes in a new environment. Jonathan is welcoming & introduces her to the entire circle of people: Nancy his girlfriend, their merch monitor Argyle his boyfriend, their assistant merch helper B!Eleven (who’s the only one not smoking), he explains tht Eleven’s dad & his step-dad is Hopper the burly man at the door, tht the man at the coolers is the shop/building owner Murray, and his friends Robin and Steve are tangled up in a way tht makes it hard to tell who was sitting on whose lap. She introduces herself as Max Riot & everyone cheers her for her badass name. Eleven eagerly gives her a fistbump telling her tht her name & her look is bitchin’. Max compliments everyone because they’re dressed in a way she never knew punks would dress. Each person is in a slightly different aesthetic but the eclectic look of the group works. Steve explains they all enjoy different flavors of punk fashion.
When she notices the spiked collars practically everyone in the room is wearing she can’t stop from commenting abt wanting one for herself. Robin crows tht she has to go to a specific thrifted clothing store tht has a display from a leatherworker who loves making the kind of collars everyone is wearing. When Max looks uncertain Eleven offers to meet up & go with her because she needs some new shirts to cut up, tht her boyfriend Lucas might also join them because he needs a new jacket to wear under his battle vest. When Max asks if Lucas is coming to the show Eleven says he’ll likely get there shortly after the show starts because he has to finish dinner with his family & bribe his little sister with the newest fear street book before he can pretend he’s going to her house to sleep over & play video games for the next 2 days. Eleven & Max realize they’re going to the same high school & Eleven eagerly invites her to eat lunch with her, Lucas, & their friends.
Max is so absorbed in her borderline flirty conversation with El tht she’s surprised to hear the noise of drums crashing out a beat on the stage, turning around as she gawks to find the people she’d been chatting with are the band performing. Then she's lost to the music, throwing herself around the edges of the pit, jumping to the overwhelming energy of the music, yelling out the anger she's felt since fully presenting, sweating away her eyeliner, stumbling to get water, & then ending up at the front as the band crashes through their finale with Steve ripping off his shirt to throw into the crowd showing off his tattoos & pierced nipples before pulling out a nail ridden baseball bat tht he uses to smash apart an old stereo she hadn't noticed. It's electric, it's exhilarating, it's pumping adrenaline straight to her heart. The crowd calms as best a punk crowd can as they begin filing out of the basement after an encore tht features Robin at the mic singing an anti-war song from the 70s. The little concert/show was nearly two hours after all & it’s getting so late it’s almost early morning.
The band steps down from the stage as the crowd dwindles, Jonathan asks Max if she's able to join them for some food at a nearby diner & she agrees right away. She's told to just wait by the merch table with El & Lucas as they put away their instruments. Indeed a black boy is sitting behind the merch table with El in his lap. El eagerly greets her, getting up & hugging her, then happily introduces her boyfriend A!Lucas. A CD of the latest from Cannibal Impulse is pressed into her hands free of charge by Lucas while El sticks a pin badge of the band's logo onto her vest. Thus begins Max's whirlwind final month of summer vacation learning abt punk, filling her music collection w previous Cannibal Impulse CDs & other punk bands she ends up liking (both local & famous) through everyone's efforts to help her learn, investing in a new wardrobe, decorating her battle vest, & attending every show Cannibal Impulse plays tht isn't in a bar (which turns out to b the majority of them)
Chrissy is more than supportive, laughing as she thinks abt Eddie “metal is king” Munson’s reaction.
Imagine Eddie's surprise (despair) to come home from a tour shortly before school starts to his daughter blasting punk music, dressing like a punk with notably new piercings he knows Chrissy had to sign off on, loudly going out on weekends to punk shows, & coming home at all hours smelling of weed & sometimes high. He can't complain exactly, he was smoking weed at an earlier age than her, staying out at all hours, blasting metal, taking impromptu trips w his band out to the city to watch some metal concert or other. At least she calls him to let him know she got to the venue safely & to give an estimate of when she'll b home. At least she doesn't seem to have any tattoos yet.
Eventually Eddie wants to go with Max to one of these shows. Mostly because he wants to understand his daughter as she’s growing up without them growing apart, and because the band's newly established label has hit a bit of a wall when recruiting new talent. They have a number of metal artists on their label, some rock, and even a couple of bubblegum pop artists. But they feel like their catalog isn’t as well rounded as it could be. So Eddie asks to go with her, and she tells him she has to think abt it & warn her friends because none of them know her dad is world famous Eddie Munson, The Freak King of Corroded Coffin. This makes Eddie sad tht his daughter is basically hiding him from her new friends & mentors but Chrissy knocks him upside the head telling him tht she’s had less than genuine friendships before now due to her dad being a world famous musician.
When Max brings it up after a show that weekend they’re all sitting in their favorite diner digging into greasy delicious food they don’t believe her at first, but then El tells them she isn’t lying despite only have met Chrissy (El has an uncanny knack for knowing when someone is lying) so it turns to disbelief tht Metal King Munson wants to go to a punk show of his own free will. The tension between metalheads & punks is well documented after all. But all in all they agree because Max is one of them, Steve has all but adopted her, Lucas & El have tentatively begun to court her, Jonathan has been teaching her drums, Robin has donated some of her more glam articles of clothing to the cause tht is Max’s continued education in the punk scene, Nancy has helped her (as well as El & Lucas) with their homework, & Argyle makes sure that when she does occasionally join them in smoking weed she’s safe & not getting overwhelmed. So they agree tht Eddie should feel more than free to come to their upcoming show in the basement of Murray’s shop/building & they reassure Max they’re not looking for any kind of record deal.
The night of the show comes quickly & Max sheepishly brings Eddie along. Hopper’s eyes bug out of his head when he notices Eddie behind Max after greeting Max with the handshake he shares with El & Lucas. The basement becomes controlled pandemonium when people process/notice tht Eddie Munson is there in the flesh. No one approaches him for autographs & when they see he’s there with Max they leave him alone in favor of greeting Max because everyone’s gotten to know her by now especially since Cannibal Impulse took her under their wing. Eddie follows Max, feeling out of place for the first time in a long time, to the merch table where all of her closest scene friends are gathered. They’re courteous to Eddie since he’s Max’s dad, and Steve gives him a wave from where he’s a tangle of platonic limbs with Robin. Eddie takes a moment to come back to himself after staring at Steve who’s the most striking omega he’s ever seen. He ends up striking up a conversation with Lucas & El when they reveal they’re the pair that’s been courting Max since school started. Then before he knows it a guitar is wailing from the stage & he gives his attention to the show. Cannibal Impulse put on an electric show. Robin starts them out with another anti-war song this time from the 60s tht they repurposed for the punk genre. Then Steve steps up to the mic & it’s like the crowd comes to life even further. A mosh pit explodes in the room, he’s briefly concerned when Max & Lucas jump right into the center of the pit, but soon he’s absorbed with the performance the band is putting on. When the finale comes Steve’s already ripped his shirt off & as Nancy & Jonathan play a screaming duet with their instruments Steve is smashing apart a piece of equipment tht they got from their favorite recycling center with his nail bat.

Worldbuilding: This is a Drill
Never underestimate “old”. Some things are old for a very good reason. They work.
Horseshoe crabs have lived visibly unchanged for over 300 million years. Sharks are an age-old “fish predator” shape. Books have reliably kept and passed down information for over a millennium; we’re still investigating remedies in Bald’s Leechbook.
One of the oldest complex tools we have is the drill. What’s interesting about that is that we’re not sure which function of it as a tool came first. Humans being humans, odds are we did both at once.
The best-known modern function is that of creating a hole through, or partly through, another object. What we do with the hole afterward is up to your imagination. Stringing neat things as jewelry goes back as long as Homo has been sapiens; likely longer, check what anthropologists have dug up lately. Fastening things together, drilling out things we don’t want (knots in wood, bad teeth, etc.) or just putting holes in things for the heck of it are all common uses.
(Never underestimate the human ability to do things Because. We poke things. It’s a species thing.)
But when we drill things, we also create friction. Modern drills employ several methods to try and reduce it, everything from lubricants to timed bursts to heat-resistant gold oxide drill alloys. If all we want is a hole, generally we want as little heat to damage the material as possible.
In some ancient tools, though, making heat was the entire point. I’m talking about the original fire drill.
Now, when it comes to making fire, I am firmly in Camp Matches. I’ve also worked around Bunsen burners enough that I’m okay with flint and steel. But we’ve only had steel for, oh, say around 2500 years, plus or minus depending on where you were on the planet. Matches have only been around a few centuries. And if you’re really in dire straits - cast up on a deserted island formed from a coral atoll, or something - you might not even have flint.
In which case you’d better have ingenuity and patience. Given a bit of materials and time, you can drill fire into existence.
Note, have absolutely all your fire materials and very fine tinder set up in advance, and protect everything from the wind as much as possible. It’s going to take a long time, you’ll only get one ember at a time, and it’ll be a cold night sleeping if you miss.
So. Have everything you can think of set up, sit down, and drill. Be prepared for hours of pulling your bit back and forth.
No, longer than that.
Longer.
Eventually, it works. And if you get it to work once you will understand why ancient hunter-gatherers would set up fire-pouches and horns to carry a hot ember with them at all times. Because augh.
So. That’s a drill. And it will almost definitely be useful in your world, for one reason or another.
Fun fact: one of the first human uses of diamonds was industrial, diamond-tipped drills to make fine holes in pearls! They were imported from India to drill pearls in China in the Yuan Dynasty. Cool!

In the Bleak Midwinter
By: FloreatCastellum
Prompt: In the Bleak Midwinter
Summary: ‘Twas the week before Christmas and in grand TTB tradition @floreatcastellumposts was serving up some heartbreaking, festive angst. Don’t forget your cloak as we journey into the forest with Dean.
Read it below or on AO3 here.
The snow is not settling on the ground. Each snowflake has a brief life of falling from the grey sky onto the scrubby grass and then vanishing at once. Dean supposes that in other weather it might be beautiful here; perhaps the sun would reflect gloriously off the small trout lake, perhaps the rushes of the river just over the bank would sway pleasantly in a warm summer breeze, perhaps the short, muddy grass would bloom with wildflowers.
But at the moment, all is washed grey with sleet, and he has that heavy coldness that comes from clothes that are always just a little bit wet. Shivering has become an unremarkable constant.
‘Accio trout,’ says Dirk, and three fish have a bewildering end to their lives as they are magically hoisted out of the cold water to struggle and twist for breath in the damp air. The ripples from them spread and then settle once more into grey, stone-like stillness.
They are setting up camp on a little island in the lake, accessible by a thin, creaking footbridge. Small wooden platforms punctuate the shore, for anglers who pay for the privilege of fishing here, Dean guesses, and a thicket of forest provides some shelter from the bitter wind which moans around them.
‘Bleak, innit,’ grumbles Ted, clearing the ground. ‘Grab that guyline, would you, son?’
Dean does so; the rope stings and leaves red marks on his numb hands but he’s used to this routine now. He twists it around a peg as it magically hammers itself into the ground, and knots it the way Dirk showed him. Ted is cursing under his breath; the frost has left the ground as hard as iron, and even with magic it’s proving difficult to get the pegs in.
The goblins speak in their harsh, guttural way, and then Gornuk says, ‘you need to descale and clean it.’
‘Yes, I know,’ says Dirk irritably. ‘You tell me every time.’
There’s more gobbledegook, and then snickering laughter; Dirk throws a dark look to Ted, who replies with an exasperated little chuckle and a shake of the head.
Dean and Ted continue putting the tent up; the sleet-snow is falling thicker now, though still not settling on the ground, so it’s with great relief that they finally get it up and are able to sit in the entrance and light a fire.
It’s a burst of colour, and Dean is briefly hypnotised by the dancing orange and flickering yellow and the rough sound of Dirk and the goblins descaling the fish nearby.
He is sick of bloody fish. Sick to death of it. It’s not as though he was someone who didn’t like fish before. His mother would stew fish, or pan fry it and serve with a mango salsa, or add to a curry, or serve up ackee and saltfish. All spice and heat and colour. It makes Dean think of the way the sun bounces off the cracked pavements of East London and the throb of music and bright but skimpy clothes. It used to make him think of a childhood holiday to Jamaica, fried fish on Hellshire Beach, golden sands and azure waters.
But out here, in a different middle of nowhere each day, they choose fish because it is the only reliable source of food available. They stick to rivers and lakes and stretches of lonely coastline because Dirk has perfected magical fishing, and they can no longer find much from raiding peoples’ allotments, so they’re guaranteed a meal. But after just a few seconds away from the fire it feels cold again, and in dim winter light it always looks grey, and there is not a hint of spice to warm his tongue. He is sick of spitting out flimsy little bones, even when he pushes his knife away from the spine like Ted showed him, even when the fish are filetted by the goblins (which is rare, because they enjoy the crunch).
He doesn’t think it’s enough, either - there’s no fat on fish, and he finds it hard to ever feel full on it, even when they manage to scavenge a few potatoes or rice to have with it. He craves red meat, daydreams about it, his mouth salivates as he imagines biting into a thick, juicy burger, or the smell of bacon frying, or the richness of Mum’s mutton curry.
He watches for a little while, as Dirk pulls a knife roughly across the fish, from the tail towards the head, sending scales flying into the air like metallic snowflakes. He turns his attention back to the fire; just looking at it warms him a little.
The low winter sun has darkened swiftly; the water of the lake seems to go black quicker than the night sky. Dean has never been much of a landscape artist. It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate the beauty of nature and all that (though he has found that he appreciates it far less now he is forced to live in it), but he’s found his drawings have always felt a little empty without a person in them.
So instead of the dramatic view ahead of him, of the snow falling in a flurry over black water and windswept rushes, he pulls out his sketchbook and warms up his fingers by drawing a rough, unidentifiable shadow descaling a fish.
‘That Dirk?’ Ted says after a while. He’s rubbing his hands together and blowing on them between their chatter. Dean’s own fingers are numb with cold; it’s all he can do to loosely hold the pencil.
‘I s’pose - not specifically. Just - the action. The pose.’
Dirk was squatting on the ground to clean the fish; one shoulder against a tree trunk to keep him steady. Dean had been practising the lines and perspective of it.
‘I was going to say, you’ve drawn him far too attractive.’
Dean grinned, and Ted continued.
‘I hope when you draw me you do the same; take a few pounds off, iron out some wrinkles. Make my hair a bit thicker.’
‘Sure, mate, I can do that for you.’
Ted tutted. ‘I thought you’d argue - where’s your artistic integrity? Aren’t you meant to tell me those things make me more interesting?’
Dean laughs out loud. ‘I s’pose a proper artist would.’
‘And what stops you being a proper artist?’ asks Ted. His voice is a little like a friendly teacher, or beloved uncle. He’s taken Dean under his wing a bit, which Dean appreciates.
‘Being paid,’ says Dean flatly.
‘What’re your rates?’
‘You couldn’t afford ‘em, Ted.’
Ted hisses, his shoulders shaking with restrained laughter. ‘That’s cold, son. You know I can’t wander into Gringotts.’
Dirk and the goblins return and the fish are charmed to rotate slowly over the fire. The smell of them roasting fills the cold air, and Dean watches their eyes shrivel and blacken. He thinks about Hogwarts, and how the food magically appeared, hot and fresh and deliciously prepared. He thinks about how he and Seamus used to complain about it being boring.
He would love some boring food right now. A boring shepherds pie, a dull pasta bake, a dreary fish and chips. Something warming and comforting and plain.
‘Is Potterwatch on tonight?’ asks Ted.
‘Er… I’ll grab my diary, I wrote it down…’ says Dirk, and he squeezes awkwardly past Dean and Ted to vanish into the tent.
The snow has started to settle now, Dean notices. It’s collecting at the edges of things first. The roots of sleeping, bare trees, the grooves of the little wooden fishing platform.
‘Gringotts will be suffering without that man’s organisation’ says Ted, taking a long stick and prodding at the base of the fire. ‘Legendary. Bet he was like that at school too. Bet he was Head Boy.’
‘Eh?’ comes Dirk’s voice from the depths of the tent.
‘You were Head Boy, weren’t you? After I left.
Dirk staggers clumsily out of the tent, sniffing in the biting cold, and settles back down by the fire. ‘Yeah, that’s right,’ he says absent-mindedly, opening his red planner and rifling through the pages. ‘School swot, I was.’
‘I wasn’t,’ Ted told Dean. ‘Too cool for that.’
Dean grinned. ‘Same. I mean - I didn’t get Prefect, so-’
‘Blimey,’ says Dirk suddenly, looking at his diary. He looks up. ‘Merry Christmas, everyone.’
A heavy silence falls on the three wizards; just the slight spit of the fire and crackle of the fish roasting. The goblins exchange glances that seem to Dean to be exasperated smirks, and start muttering quietly in gobbledegook.
‘Oh,’ says Dean.
‘Happy Christmas,’ says Ted hollowly.
The snow falls thicker, collecting easily now, resting on that which has already fallen.
It hits Dean very hard then. He tries to reason with himself; it is just a day, that is all. If he had not known the date, the sun would have risen and set and the night passed overhead with the same dreary monotony as any other at the moment, and he would have felt no stronger.
But he does know, and he feels suspended in it. He is left bereft, devastated, almost abandoned as he thinks about what this day should be, what it has always been to him – full of warmth and excitement and joy and love, and it is like being torn apart from his family all over again. He does not dare speak, because he knows his voice will crack.
‘Not how I’d like to be spending it, no offence to you lot,’ Ted says.
Dean swallows, and nods.
‘I’ve not got any of you anything,’ says Dirk.
‘You got us some fish,’ says Ted. ‘Cheers, mate.’ It’s a weak attempt at bravado, but Dean appreciates it. He tries to salvage something of it himself, and returns to the rough sketch that was supposed to be him practising form. With fingers stinging from cold, he does what he can to improve it, to make it more recognisable, to make it look like he put some thought and care into it.
‘You’re welcome,’ Dirk says to Ted, a wobble in his voice.
It remains a rough looking sketch, but he signs it, tears it out from the pad, and leans over, holding it out to Dirk. He had nothing else to give him, in these circumstances. ‘Merry Christmas,’ he says, to Dirk’s surprised face.
‘Well - thanks, I - oh! Hah!’ He gives a spluttered, watery laugh as he looks fondly down at the drawing. ‘Thank you, Dean, really.’
Ted whistles, long and low and approving. ‘Signed and everything, Dirk, that’ll be worth a few bob in the years to come, trust me.’
‘I’ll get started on yours now, Ted,’ Dean assures him. ‘How do you want to be posed?’
‘Heroically.’
‘Lying in your camp bed snoring, got it.’
They try, they really do. They dance around it, they feign lightheartedness, they take the dark, terrible, lonely thoughts that are screaming in their brains and try to pretend that they do not in fact feel them, that they can shrug it off.
The snow falls thicker and thicker as they eat their fish (instantly cold), and retreat into the tent for scant warmth. They force laughter. Even the goblins seem to take pity and offer up a flask of something goblin made that Dean cannot pronounce but tastes, to him, like vodka.
‘You lot don’t celebrate Christmas then?’ Ted asks them.
‘No,’ says Gornuk flatly, ‘but we understand the traditions for you.’
Dean finishes the drawing of Ted, and offers it as a Christmas gift with a great flourish. He offers to repay the gift of alcohol with drawings of the goblins. They do not seem impressed. With that, they retire to their camp beds, leaving the three wizards to carry on drinking.
The alcohol liberates the unspoken words. It is Ted who raises the subject of their longing loneliness first. ‘Who’re you missing this year, Dean?’ he asks. ‘Who’s the family waiting for you to come home?’
‘My mum,’ admits Dean. ‘Sisters.’
‘Older or younger?’
‘Younger - we’re all so close, they were furious when I went away to school. I’ve never had a Christmas without them though. I wonder how it’s going for them.’
‘I wonder how my daughter’s Christmas is going,’ Ted says vaguely. ‘She’ll be… a few months along now, I suppose.’
‘You going to be a grandad, Ted?’ Dean asks.
He hums and nods slowly. ‘Apparently so.’
‘Next Christmas will be fantastic,’ Dirk tells him. ‘With a little one running round. Or, well, crawling.’
‘You’re going to be a great Grandad,’ Dean says. ‘The favourite one, I bet.’
‘Do you know, I don’t even know if there is another grandad, I don’t know much about my son-in-law, considering,’ says Ted. ‘Everything moved pretty quickly, then I had to leg it.’ He looks at Dirk. ‘Who are you missing this Christmas?’
Dirk thinks for a long time, staring at the flickering paraffin lamp on the table. When he speaks, Dean can hear the heavy regret in every long pause between words. ‘You know, I… I spent so many years thinking there was time for… all that… later. I was so…’ He took a great shuddering breath and turned to Dean. ‘You don’t know how lucky you are, you know.’
Dean doesn’t feel lucky, but he also knows these men well enough by now to wait, and listen.
‘This is awful, obviously, but you had some good school years. When we were at school, muggleborns had to prove themselves a hundred times over to be in with a shot of getting a decent job. Didn’t we, Ted?’
Ted sniffed, and nodded, his eyes fixed on the lamp too. ‘Yeah - bloody hard if you were average like me, but I tried to keep a good sense of humour and that helped more than you’d expect, just about. Wasn’t easy though. Got into my fair share of scraps.’
Dean could not imagine Ted as a fighter, but Dirk swiftly clarified the confusion. ‘They used to target us, didn’t they, Ted? Horrific, what some of them used to get away with - then they all became Death Eaters later, didn’t they? You just tried to keep your head down.’
‘Well,’ said Ted fairly, ‘or you started scandalous relationships with Slytherin pureblood girls, but you know, we all had different tactics for survival.’
Dirk laughed. ‘You were a braver man than me - I just studied hard, tried to prove I deserved my place. Got there in the end. I don’t suppose you remember Lily Evans, Ted? Later became Lily Potter?’
‘No, she was too many years below me, never really crossed paths, from what I recall.’
‘She was the year above me; her tactic was to bloody try and kill ‘em with kindness, she was friends with some of them, for a bit anyway. Obviously didn’t work for her. But she was similar to me, talented enough to get into the Slug Club, but bloody hell did she have to work for it.’ He sighed heavily. ‘And I was the same, and anyway - I got myself a decent job, and worked hard and just kept working hard… Never really accepted that I was safe from any of that, never focused on anything but work.’
‘You regret it?’ Ted asks quietly.
‘I never did before,’ says Dirk. ‘I was proud. I still am, really. And I suppose I should count myself lucky there’s no wife or kiddies at home missing me. But… it would be nice to be missed.’ He turns to Dean, and fixes him with the sort of stern stare Professor McGonagall so often gave, in what feels like a lifetime ago. ‘Don’t become a cynic like me,’ he implores. ‘Don’t let them rob you of joy too. When all this is over, make sure you actually live - really live.’
He seems to realise what he says, and for some reason this embarrasses him. He flushes, and seizes the flask of vodka-like drink, and takes a swift gulp.
Dean nods, but then lets the silence awkwardly rest over them. He knows the cause - knows what all of them are thinking. When will this be over, really? Will it ever be over? Will they see the end of it? Or will they freeze out here in this bleak and barren landscape?
He tries to think of something else to say. ‘I didn’t realise Harry’s mother was muggleborn,’ he says at last.
‘He never mentioned it? I thought you said you were in the same dorm,’ says Ted.
‘We were. He doesn’t talk about his parents. Not to me, at least. Never really mentions them.’
‘That’s a shame,’ says Dirk. ‘They were decent people. Well, Lily definitely. James Potter could be a bit of a prat to be honest.’
A moment for the words to sink in, and then they splutter with shocked laughter.
Dirk’s words swirl around Dean’s head as he tries to sleep that night. They leave a lamp on low for the scant warmth, so he stares at the warm, flickering yellow glow as he thinks about them. After the war is over, he must live. Truly live.
He should, he knows, be thinking about his family. And it’s not to say that he hasn’t been thinking about them, because of course he has. He misses them so much it is sheer agony. He wants to risk it all and apparate right back to them, just to feel them in his arms even for a brief few seconds. He yearns to hear his mother’s voice. Perhaps he will find a payphone soon, and call. Maybe that would be safe.
But in truth, it is not them that he is fixating on as he gazes into the dim lamplight.
He thinks instead of the most lively person he knows. The person that has him roaring with laughter. The person who always finds the fun in something. The person that seems to be synonymous to happiness.
Silently, without waking the others, he gets out of bed. His pencil once again glides over the page, the guidelines soft, the tone layered up, careful detail. It’s as though his hand moves of its own accord, he doesn’t really register what he’s doing except for the fact that a hundred, a thousand, a million different fragments of memory were pummelling through his brain, each one as though painted by watercolour, soft and clouded and drowning in colour and light.
How long it takes him to draw in that dim light he isn’t sure, but he eventually puts down his pencil and looks upon perhaps the best piece he has ever created. If only he had watercolours, to add to it, to bring it away from that black and white and into something truly reflective of the person he was trying to capture. He was beautiful, Dean realises. He has never considered it before.
Still as though in a daze, he pulls on his boots, swings his coat over his shoulders, and slips out of the tent. The snow is thick now, it crunches underfoot, but otherwise muffles the world so that he stepped into a strange, close silence. The branches of the trees are covered in frost and ice, a strange tinsel, glittering in his wand light.
He goes down to the wooden platform that perches just over the water edge. It has not frozen over but it is uncommonly still, and in the snow and the dark it is black looking, as though the depths of it continue forever. His fingers are numb and prickling in the chill already, but he takes out the drawing and holds it before him. It is cast in faint blue from the light of his wand.
Seamus stares back at him, with the slight upturn of his mouth and hooded eyes that Dean fiercely knows to be the pale blue of a morning sky but are here cast, by circumstance alone, in the grey lead of his pencil.
Dean wonders if it is normal to feel suspended like this when thinking about someone. He wonders if it’s normal to think this strongly about a friend. He wonders if it is normal to miss a living person so strongly it feels like grief, like the gently increasing pain of being out here in bleak weather is nothing compared to his warm absence.
He wonders why he does not want to risk anyone seeing this drawing, this outpouring of… He cannot admit the word to himself.
Instead, he crouches, and gently places the drawing on the surface of the still water. For a moment, it seems as though it hasn’t even made a ripple, but then he sees it, reaching out into the night. The drawing of Seamus floats for a while, and he watches it, hoping desperately, praying, even, that all of this will end. That spring will eventually soften this iron hard earth, that they will see one another again at last.
Gradually, the drawing sinks into the safety of the black water, unseen by anyone but Dean. He watches it vanish, and feels oddly freed.
He will see him again, he decides. And this time, as Dirk suggests, they will live. Really live.

Mastering the Art of Fishing: Essential Tips for Beginners
Fishing is a rewarding activity that combines patience, skill, and a bit of luck. Whether you're hoping to catch a big fish for dinner or want to enjoy a peaceful day by the water, improving your fishing skills is key to enhancing your experience. Getting started can seem overwhelming, but anyone can learn to fish successfully with the right knowledge and approach. Below are some essential tips for beginners to improve their fishing skills and maximize their time on the water.
Choose the Right Equipment
Selecting the appropriate fishing gear is crucial to your success as a beginner. The first thing to consider is the type of fishing you want—freshwater, saltwater, fly fishing, or another style. Each type of fishing requires specific gear, and understanding this distinction will help you make informed choices.
For freshwater fishing, a spinning rod and reel combo is often the best option for beginners. This setup is user-friendly, versatile, and suitable for various fish species. For saltwater fishing, you’ll need more durable equipment to withstand the elements, including corrosion-resistant rods and reels. Additionally, when choosing a rod, consider factors like length and action. A medium-length rod with moderate action is a good starting point for most anglers, offering balance and control.
Learn the Basics of Casting
Casting is a fundamental skill that every fisherman must master. Knowing how to cast properly will improve your accuracy and distance, whether fishing in a pond, lake, or river. A smooth, controlled cast is essential for reaching the fish without startling them or causing unnecessary tangles.
Start by practicing with a simple overhand cast. Hold the rod with both hands, ensuring your grip is firm but relaxed. With the rod behind you, bring it forward smoothly while releasing the line at the right moment to send it sailing through the air. Pay attention to your timing and the angle of your cast. Practice in an open area before attempting to cast in a more challenging environment, like near trees or a shoreline. As you become more comfortable, you’ll improve your distance and precision.
Understand the Fish You’re Targeting
Every fish species has its habits, preferences, and environment, so it’s important to understand the fish you're trying to catch. For beginners, researching the species you’re targeting will give you insights into the best time and place to fish and the type of bait and lures to use.
Fish are often found in specific habitats based on the time of year and their feeding habits. For example, bass are typically found in deeper waters during the summer, while trout prefer cooler streams and rivers. Knowing these details can increase your chances of success. You can also ask local anglers or visit online fishing forums to learn about the best fishing spots and techniques for different species.
Master Knot Tying
Knot tying is an essential skill that all anglers should learn. A good knot ensures that your hook, lure, or bait stays securely attached to the line, which is vital when reeling in a fish. If your knot fails, you risk losing your catch and wasting valuable time and effort.
You can use many different knots, but as a beginner, start with basic knots, such as the improved clinch knot or the loop knot. These knots are simple to tie, yet they provide reliable strength. Practice tying them at home before hitting the water, and consider carrying extra tackle in case you need to re-tie your knots while fishing. The more proficient you become with knot tying, the more confident you’ll feel on the water.
Be Patient and Stay Calm
Fishing requires patience and a calm demeanor. Many beginners must avoid expecting immediate results, but fishing often involves long waiting periods. Understanding that patience is part of the experience will help you enjoy the process more and remain persistent when things aren’t going as planned.
When fishing, try to stay relaxed and focused. Pay attention to your surroundings, watch for fish activity, and listen for any signs of movement in the water. Staying calm will allow you to think clearly and react quickly when a fish bites. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t catch anything immediately; instead, focus on improving your technique and learning from each experience. Over time, patience will pay off, and your skills will improve.
Stay Safe and Follow the Regulations
Fishing can be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby, but it’s important to prioritize safety and follow all local fishing regulations. Always wear appropriate clothing, including a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes, to protect yourself from the elements. If you're fishing in a boat, wear a life jacket, and always be mindful of your surroundings.
Fishing is a skill that requires practice, patience, and dedication, but with the right approach, beginners can quickly improve their abilities and enjoy a successful fishing experience. By selecting the right equipment, mastering essential techniques like casting and knot tying, and learning how to read the water, you’ll increase your chances of making the catch of the day. Remember, enjoying the process and staying patient is the most important thing. As you gain experience, you’ll find that fishing becomes a rewarding and fulfilling activity you can enjoy for years.

Knot Tying Techniques for Monofilament and Multifilament Nylon Fishing Nets
Knot Tying Techniques for Monofilament and Multifilament Nylon Fishing Nets
Fishing nets are essential tools for capturing fish, and the proper knots are crucial for assembling, repairing, and securing these nets. For both monofilament and multifilament nylon fishing nets, strong, reliable knots ensure the net remains intact under stress, provides consistent performance, and withstands various environmental conditions.
Due to the differences in the characteristics of monofilament and multifilament nylon, certain knots are better suited to one type of material over the other. The techniques covered here include knots commonly used for securing netting to frames or leads, tying the netting itself, and attaching netting to various tackle components. This guide will look at essential knot types, including their benefits, application methods, and importance for both monofilament and multifilament nets.
1. Understanding Knot Requirements for Monofilament and Multifilament Nylon Nets
Characteristics of Monofilament Nylon
Slick Surface: Monofilament is made from a single strand of nylon, which can be quite smooth and somewhat slippery. This surface can make it difficult for knots to hold unless they’re specifically designed for monofilament.
Stretch: Monofilament nylon stretches under tension, which can affect the integrity of knots if they are not tied securely.
UV Sensitivity: Monofilament nylon can degrade in sunlight over time, which may affect knot strength if exposed for long periods.
Characteristics of Multifilament Nylon
Braided or Twisted Construction: Multifilament nylon consists of multiple fibers woven or braided together, giving it more texture and grip.
Higher Strength: Multifilament is generally stronger and more durable than monofilament, making it well-suited for knots that need to withstand high tension.
Less Stretch: Multifilament nylon has less stretch compared to monofilament, allowing for a tighter, more secure knot.
AATHIFISHNET and Quality Knotting
AATHIFISHNET produces both monofilament and multifilament nylon fishing nets, focusing on strength, durability, and resistance to wear and tear. They use industry-standard knots to ensure that their products meet the highest quality standards. By employing effective knot-tying techniques, AATHIFISHNET ensures that their nets remain secure under various conditions, providing reliable performance for commercial and recreational fishers alike.
2. Common Knots for Monofilament Nylon Nets
Due to the unique properties of monofilament nylon, it requires specific knot types that can hold well under slippery conditions. Here are some of the most effective knots for securing monofilament nylon nets:
a) Overhand Knot
The overhand knot is one of the simplest and most commonly used knots. While it may not provide the highest strength, it’s useful for tying monofilament because it’s quick and easy.
How to Tie: Pass the end of the line over itself to form a loop. Then, pass the end through the loop and pull it tight.
Application: It’s best for simple repairs and securing sections of the net temporarily.
Advantages: Simple to tie and can be reinforced with additional knots for added security.
b) Loop Knot
Loop knots are useful when attaching hooks, sinkers, or other tackle components to monofilament nets. One of the most popular loop knots is the Surgeon’s Loop Knot.
How to Tie: Double the line back on itself to form a loop. Make an overhand knot with the loop, then pass the loop through the overhand knot once more and tighten.
Application: Ideal for attaching tackle, such as weights, to the monofilament net without compromising the net’s flexibility.
Advantages: Provides a strong loop that won’t easily slip or come undone.
c) Palomar Knot
The Palomar Knot is highly effective for monofilament because it provides excellent knot strength and resists slipping.
How to Tie: Double the line and pass the loop through the eye of the hook or sinker. Tie an overhand knot with the doubled line. Pass the hook or sinker through the loop, then tighten by pulling both ends of the line.
Application: Useful for securing tackle to the net, as well as for tying the net to a frame or lead line.
Advantages: Strong, reliable, and easy to tie, even with a slick monofilament line.
d) Improved Clinch Knot
The Improved Clinch Knot is commonly used with monofilament lines because of its grip strength and durability.
How to Tie: Pass the end of the line through the eye of the hook or net frame. Wrap the end around the standing line five or six times, then pass the end through the small loop created near the eye. Pull it through the larger loop and tighten.
Application: This knot is ideal for attaching monofilament nets to tackle, leads, or frames.
Advantages: Strong and secure, reducing the risk of slippage under tension.
3. Common Knots for Multifilament Nylon Nets
Multifilament nylon nets benefit from knots that are well-suited to braided lines, which have more texture and grip. Here are some common knot types for multifilament nylon:
a) Double Overhand Knot
For multifilament, the double overhand knot is a quick and effective way to secure the net.
How to Tie: Create an overhand knot as usual, but instead of pulling it tight, wrap the end around twice before pulling.
Application: Suitable for temporary repairs and tying sections of the net together.
Advantages: Simple, strong, and better suited to multifilament than a single overhand knot.
b) Albright Knot
The Albright Knot is effective for connecting multifilament nets to other lines, such as monofilament or braided line, and provides a smooth, reliable connection.
How to Tie: Fold the thicker line back on itself to form a loop. Pass the lighter line through the loop and wrap it around both the loop and the thicker line eight to ten times. Pass the end of the lighter line back through the loop, then tighten.
Application: Used to attach different sections of netting together, or when connecting the net to a different type of line.
Advantages: Strong, durable, and reduces bulk at the knot.
c) Blood Knot
The Blood Knot is excellent for tying sections of multifilament netting together, as it provides a secure and low-profile connection.
How to Tie: Overlap the ends of the two lines and wrap one line around the other four to five times. Pass the ends back through the center loop, then pull the lines in opposite directions to tighten.
Application: Ideal for joining sections of multifilament netting or for repairing tears in the net.
Advantages: Secure and streamlined, reducing the chances of snags or tangles.
d) Sheet Bend
The Sheet Bend knot is perfect for joining two lines of different thicknesses, making it useful for connecting sections of netting to thicker lead or float lines.
How to Tie: Create a loop with the thicker line and pass the thinner line through the loop. Wrap the thinner line around the loop and tuck it under itself, then tighten.
Application: Used for connecting the net to thicker lines or for extending sections of the net.
Advantages: Easy to tie and holds securely with braided lines.
4. Specialty Knots for Securing Nets to Frames and Leads
Both monofilament and multifilament nylon nets are often attached to frames, leads, and float lines, which require specific knots for secure attachment. Here are some versatile knots commonly used in these scenarios:
a) Double Fisherman’s Knot
This knot is extremely strong and commonly used for joining two lines, such as when attaching netting to a lead line or frame.
How to Tie: Lay the two lines parallel and tie an overhand knot with each end around the opposite line. Pull the knots tight so they slide together.
Application: Ideal for attaching the netting to supporting lines or for joining sections of net.
Advantages: Strong, secure, and can withstand high tension.
b) Loop to Loop Connection
This knot technique involves creating loops on both the net and the line it’s being attached to, then interlocking the loops.
How to Tie: Create a loop at the end of the netting line using a knot like the double overhand or surgeon’s loop. Do the same on the line it will be connected to, then pass one loop through the other and pull tight.
Application: Suitable for quickly connecting nets to frames or other lines with minimal adjustment.
Advantages: Simple, quick to tie and untie, providing flexibility.
c) Bowline Knot
The bowline knot is useful for creating a fixed loop that can attach a line to a frame, float, or lead without slipping.
How to Tie: Form a small loop near the end of the line. Pass the end through the loop, around the standing line, and back down through the loop, then tighten.
Application: Ideal for securing net lines to frames

it's nearly 1am and i want to talk about some OCs and a world setting/base idea that i've never done too much with but always think i want to.
WIP title was 'there's no such thing as a vampire', as an absolute direct reference to 'there's no such thing as a fish' and it hinged on that same principle. There are demonstrably vampires in the world, same as there are fish. But wtf does 'fish' mean, and wtf does 'vampire' mean?
There's no set definition, no singular concept or easily categorized thing.
so there were vampires like Dima and Emil who didn't need blood, they ate organs, and could be outside during the day but it sucked, who were weak to iron and could be contained by knots like putting tape on a crocodile's jaw. Turned by infection prior to death, then wake up again.
Then there was Niki who was turned after being killed in a specific way and burried intentionally fucked up to ensure she'd be stuck like that. Who was physically dead as fuck and looked it. Waxy and wrong. Who turned into this hulking monstrosity of a creature, and could only reliably be killed by decapitation, cause she made Emil throw a pitchfork through her chest for funsies one night. But her eyes will water and she'll start sneezing when around garlic, and sun brings her up in blisters
And Mallow and Steren. Siblings with deer legs like fauns. No sharp teeth, no fangs or bites. They cut. Strung up like fresh kill to drain. Except. They would argue with you if you called them vampires.
with a bunch more i just do not remember right now, cause Niki and Emil were the main blorbos for me. I miss my little dipshits.
Emil was this 'regency goth' overdramatic artist and garment maker who put on the most 'i want you to know im a vampire' extreme persona trying to be so aloof and in control when like... giggly little idiot.
Niki was a singer song writer, whose entire gimmick, with help from Emil, was all rhinestone, white leather, undead cowgirl. It allowed that suspension of disbelief that otherwise made it really easy to tell she wasn't alive. Lived to make life difficult for others, but was the best friend you'd make when drunk in a club bathroom. Only she'd never leave after that. You'd be stuck with her until she got bored.
#at one point i retooled emil into a very silly modern demeter and persephone story#about his very much genetic clinical depression and how his death and vanishing wrecked his family and the relationship with his mom#ya know the fun pretentious thing with lots of seasonal shit tying depression to winters#and how it was something he shared with a mom he loved but they both were in a time and place that wasn't going to allow them#to really survive#which don't get me wrong that was fun and all#but him and niki torturing each other endlessly in the way only best friends can?#infinitely more entertaining to jump in and out of#i need a tag for oc ramblings#gif isn't completely random it's niki's fc#this makes negative sense i do not care i haven't thought about these guys in ages
