Valerie is just one of the people who lives there, so it became much more odd when one day she successfully summons the princess of hell. And... why does she kinda like her? The king of hell and the angels of heaven surely wouldn't allow this kind of relationship to bloom.)

(Pomni is sent to the digital circus, instead of friendly faces easing her into her new forever home, there is an A.I explaining the rules of some sort of... violent cycle. She is thrown into the world, alone and having to fend for herself, trying not to be tortured by the people, just as much of victims as she, around her. Will Pomni escape? What are some books or other sources you'd recommend for an actual truthful honest look at yoko? Both the good and the bad. I regard a lot of the negative stuff I read abt her with a grain of salt because it seems like a lot of it is second or 3rd hand info not to mentiom the fact that there's still a sizable market for stories abt yokos misdeeds in a way that there isn't for John and the rest of the Beatles. That said i also think that where there's smoke there's fire and I'm not attached to any delusion that she's an angel. Thanks!

You should really just read all of them. Yoko is a complicated figure who has done good and bad things but she's still someone who had an entire life before and after John Lennon. Her upbringing and her relationship with her father are the pivotal parts of her life, whereas John was more like a culmination of her struggling. There's a new biography from David Sheff that is supposed to be definitive. I follow a bunch of the Beatles podcasts who jumped to Blue Sky and there's a general consensus that it's the biggest fullest picture that we've gotten of Yoko. I'm planning on getting to it once I've finished McCartney Legacy Vol 2.

My recommendation as someone who trained in historiography is to

take in every resource you can find

acknowledge that we are all implicitly biased which means we're taking information in through our personal lens and understanding which is not perfect

acknowledge that the sources we are reading are also biased and they're relaying information through their own personal lens and understanding which is not perfect

make up our own minds and call it good.

That's really all anyone can do. Yoko is Yoko just like you are you and I am myself. She has done a lot bad things...but on the other hand she protected Linda when Linda was actively dying of cancer and she's made a lot of interesting and experimental art that didn't make sense until Kojima put out Metal Gear Solid 2 and taught gamers what "post-modern" means. We can post to this website and talk about these sorts of sensitive topics because of Yoko Ono and how she torpedoed herself through the zeitgeist and completely rewrote the playbook on how women can behave and be successful.

Yoko's focus is on creating experiences for the person participating in her art. This is a vital part of her personality and character and it's probably the most interesting thing about her that consistently gets overlooked.

I know you didn't have much in terms of choices this time. But everything you felt, thought about during this mission, is yours. And what you decide to do with them is your choice.

Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 2

This, in my opinion anyway, is the entire thrust of Yoko Ono's artistic ethos. Yoko's art puts the responsibility of your experiences into your hands. She can provide the materials for you (such as the wearable bags) and she can create pieces that you can see or hear or touch (the furniture that she sawed in half and then arranged on her set, her childbirth inspired screams when she made music, the ceramic pot shards) but the point of these things is that she's trying to get your mind and heart jogging, trying to decide what the symbolism means to you personally. "What you decide to do with them is your choice." A lot of people have remarked on Yoko's stoicism in response to the criticism and abuse she's received in the past but truthfully I think that she understands that the people who espouse those views are responsible for them and that they have nothing to do with her. In many ways Yoko is a true political radical: she believes in the responsibilities and experiences of the individual and that we own them and cannot foist responsibility for our feelings and perceptions onto others. That is what her art pieces are all about.

This IMO is the heart of Yoko Ono and something that is easy to forget for me and probably a lot of other people: Yoko is an artist first and foremost that is trying to connect with others. I've definitely been really harsh on her in the past and I still think that's warranted but I also got a reminder recently that it's really important to remember that, well, she's a three dimensional person. A lot of the things that she says and does are the product of an artistic mind trying to process everything around her. She's simply not going to react like the average person. It's important not to read into things that just aren't there or else you end up like that insane anon from 3 years ago trying to convince me that Yoko had John killed.

I'm happy to give you a list of Yoko resources (though it's not definitive in the slightest.) When you're reading them, try to think about Yoko's various persona, how they were formed, why they were formed, and what she is trying to communicate or protect.

I will say that putting this list together was a process of several months of off-and-on looking and thinking and trying to find high quality sources. I received this ask in fucking January:

And I ran into a big problem that art history vets have probably been griping about for decades: everything about Yoko Ono is inevitably married to John and is dominated by the fucking Beatles. So putting this list together was really eye opening for me in how much her life has been dominated by The Beatles and John's shadow. Yoko's art is arguably the most important thing that she has ever done and it's something she's spent her entire life on. So putting this together made me more sympathetic to her antipathy towards The Beatles. I think that she used John horribly and Sean seems to have mixed feelings towards her and aware of her major flaws but on the other hand, researching this made me realize that Yoko genuinely wanted make oddball art that challenged the preconceptions of the average normie. She was telling the truth about being scared of being alone with John after he left the group because she realized she couldn't be enough for him on her own. She wants to be known for her art pieces, not for being the wife of John Lennon and truthfully she's earned that.

So without more bloviating, here is a (very incomplete) list of resources about the life and art of Yoko Ono:

Yoko: The Biography by David Sheff. This one is a hulking doorstopper of a book and it looks to be the most comprehensive and honest biography about Yoko to date. It's certainly not a tell-all but it doesn't need to be. IMO this book is the result of Sean Lennon taking control of the Lennon Estate and deciding that he wanted his mother's story to be told in full. I'm looking forward to reading it. The summary calls it "candid" and I'll be honest, I believe it. Ultimately it's a good thing that Sean Lennon is managing his mother's legacy. He is a twitter user but on the other hand it looks like he has a pretty good grip on who his mother and father were in all of their flaws. The way I've seen people talk about this book, it really does look like it was a labor of love to put together.

Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind. This book might be the most important volume on this list and the only reason this is Number Two is because it's a study of Yoko's artistic career instead of a full examination of her life and times. This book goes into detail about Yoko's art when she was starting out in Japan and then going into the present day. I think that if any of us want to definitively understand Yoko Ono then it's important to engage with her art. As an artistic individual she's someone who expresses herself best through her pieces. Art is an honest expression of who we are and all of our little foibles and tells come through! So the best way to understand it right now is to read this one. A lot of Yoko's art pieces are lost to time I think because a big theme for her exhibits is transience and the fleeting nature of things, hence the glass hammer she is holding in the cover photo.

Yoko Ono: An Artful Life by Donald Brackett. I actually cataloged this one for my library last year! Of all the listed items here this one is probably the one most likely to overly fawning but it's also recent which means Sean was in control of it and he wants his mother presented in the best light. This one is more of a biography than Music of the Mind and it goes more into the emotional and historical factors that were driving Yoko's decision making and her projects.

John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band: In Their Own Words & with Contributions from the People Who Were There by John Lennon. This one is packed full of photos and primary source documents. Plastic Ono Band was probably the best collaboration that John and Yoko ever did (I don't think much of Double Fantasy if I'm being honest, good singles but the whole thing...John come on...). This book is from John's POV but Yoko was his new wife and his big focus. You do have to dig into John a little bit in order to understand Yoko and seeing her through his lens is really integral to that. This one depicts why Yoko was such a gamechanger for John as a liberated thinker and how she opened a new world to him where he could reinvent himself as simply "John Lennon" and stop being Beatle John. The book depicts how Beatledom had become an albatross around John's neck, how he freed himself from it, and how Yoko rescued him from what had become a nightmare.

An Invisible Flower by Yoko Ono. This one is a picture book authored by Yoko Ono herself when she was just nineteen! Sean rescued it from her personal archives and published it. The afterword by Yoko is really nice too.

Grapefruit by Yoko Ono. John said that this is the book that made him start taking Yoko seriously. Lots of politically incorrect shit in this one, it's great. (Yoko would have made such a magnificent shitposter....)

Yoko Ono: To the Light. This one was published when Yoko was still active in public life. This one focuses on her conceptual pieces and most importantly her participatory art exhibits which don't get much spotlight anywhere else.

So after a lot of searching, faffing, thinking...this is the answer! Yoko is best known through her art and Sean has pushed through what sounds like a great biography. Happy reading!

I just realized Im a synthesis of the choices I was robbed off, I was never given the opportunity to develop personality or even preferences. And Im SO protective and dependent on my bf and our relationship because of it. Atp its kinda toxic (working on it, promise🫶) bc I tend to get really mad when he has to make a choice or do something I have no say in, because he’s the only person Ive had any control over all my life (not even myself)

MAYBEEE Just speculating. Maybe Azai felt that was about saran too? He just wanted to have complete control over him, even if (in his head) it was for Sarans own good? And ofc Saran wouldnt conform to that bc he’s actually gotten to make decisions abt himself and knows his individuality.

im not sure its quite the same? altho azai is someone who needs to be in control of things, yes. he also felt protective of saran but not enough to protect saran from himself. saran was no longer worthy of his protection or his mercy

azai admired saran greatly and idolized him to the point he was unsure if he wanted him or wanted to be like him. he made the mistake of applying his idea, his illusion of saran on the real him, thinking he knows him best. they have many differences and thoughts on things but also similarities/shared opinions on some matters and azai took those similarities and assumed they have the same beliefs in general, that theyre the same. he mistakenly believed what they had was something like vika and saran do, some sort of soulmate type of bond. he developed those possessive feelings for HIS idea of saran and couldnt handle it when everything spiraled out of control and his idea shattered to pieces

he believed saran needed him but it turned out he projected that onto saran; hes the one who needed, wanted saran

HAHAHAH OMG i never expected anybody to actually ask me this.. i love when people ask me stuff here tysm😅😅💙sorry if this is an insane rant, my memory betrays me sometimes so some things may be vague!!

just like how my girlfriend @coastyreef explained in their own post abt a similar topic (this but harumi) nya has grown and shaped into her gender identity basically just like i have as i’ve grown up. believe it or not, i used to HATE nya. everyone in the early ninjago fandom saw him as this “in the way of my gay relationships” character, and that her treatment of jay was horrible, (i could get INTO it abt that actually…. but you’ve probably heard that a few times before) basically a bunch of honestly misogynistic things in the early fandom that made me shy away from openly relating and liking her — so i sorta ran with liking jay a lot more until “recently” (aka a few years ago.. oldhead ninjago fan lol) i mean, my name sparky is literally because of jay so i have to give her some credit🙄

ninjago was and still is a way for me to process my own experiences and look at them from a different angle. ive always struggled with my gender identity/presentation growing up; i have PCOS and i was born with more masculine features then feminine, so in school i’d always be made fun of my body hair and features. i used to really want to be girly, it was a constant battle of myself between being a tomboy or a “girly girl” that continued up until middle school. i was considered dirty and rough, but also weak and annoying because i was a “girl”, so no amounts of masking and faking stereotypical femininity really changed much in my school days. (i remember my INSANE cutesy girly phase in middle school… man that was so embarrassing HAHAH)

i believe around the same time as coast, i was questioning myself too. i went by any pronouns, most notably they/them was at the front of it. i remember a year before this, i had a vulnerable moment with my chest and crying to coast about how i dont feel like a girl and i hate my boobs. which lead into coast saying “hey, we can try he/him pronouns on you and see if you like it!” i instantly retreated in fear because it was a big change that 12-13 year old sparky wasn’t entirely against, but wasnt ready to confront that part of himself. anyways, a year later i’m any pronouns queen, and im warming up to being more open to liking nya and relating to her, but im still considered and seen by others as jay reincarnate. twisted limerence, me and baes first fan season was a sort of catalyst for both of us, and waterjade as a whole was as well DEFINITELY. i mean, that ship since basically d1 was a reflection of our relationship and ourselves in the characters! it only made sense. it was just an insanely slow brewing process honestly

a lot of my own headcanons and musing for nya was internalized and kept under wraps in my own mind, i just coasted along with what coast thought up, or they would force (coax) my ideas out of me, or sometimes even if i was feeling vulnerable enough, (or manic with little to no restraint of my thoughts back then) i’d shyly share some of my headcanons for nya and hope for acceptance.. which i always got, which made me mosey up more confidence with each talk and thought. nyas presentation back then was still feminine af, the personalization laid in the pronouns and genderfluid flag (photos below of my old art.. how i used to draw her heh eww ok ive improved ok..) and the growing fat on her body, because nya being fat made me accept my own fatness/have a more body positive image!

nyas pronouns becoming from she/her to she/he/they was a secret catharsis for me, and as time went on and the he pronoun moved up and the they pronoun eventually left the picture, soon i followed suit. honestly i used to be a little followerish, when coasty began embracing the nonbinary label, i labeled myself as nonbinary too as a sort of starter, because i liked what the label meant and i felt like i related. but quickly, i realized i was mistaken. i still felt out of place, not properly understood of myself, and just plain confused. they/them pronouns never really cut it for me, in fact it annoyed me that people usually referred to me with she/they pronouns, but i buried it because i didnt really know what else i could do. transness and identity has always been complex for me, it was a chasm to move from cis to nonbinary alone. how could i be anything more then just a girl playing dressup with masculine clothes?

one day, at the end of pride month i remember.. i officially came out as genderfluid. it was just a quick post on my story on insta changing my pronouns to HE/it/they + a bunch of neos (some i still have to this day) and having genderfluid in my bio instead of nonbinary. i felt like i was starting to understand myself more, and even though it seemed short and simple to post abt it once, it felt like a huge step to me. early teenage sparky was finally getting somewhere!

this is where time gets testy for me, but i believe me and coastys gender journeys were aligned for the most part, i was just more internalized about it. nya was becoming less feminine and more masculine in appearance, he was gaining more fat and muscles, and spiky, shorter hair. i think the fact our perception of nya didnt align much with the fandoms perception (either a chapstick lesbian with flowy long hair and makeup or the 000.1% who hc’d him as transmasc, but not the way our nya was) made me resonate with her more. at this point in highschool im #1 nya relater, which actually caused me some problems believe it or not. when i became open about liking him to the point of him being my muse i was pushed back into keeping it to myself because 2020-2022 (kin)stagram was SOOO crazy 😅😅but hey im out of that cesspool now as you can see! i still remember the day i changed my name from solely sparky to nya/sparky. it felt so right to take a name thats also a part of my culture (nya is a name that has irish roots, it is also samoan! fun fact!) and that came from my favorite character.

i also struggled with my sexuality and channeled that through nya. for a long time, even when i was in elementary school i called myself bisexual. even though i never really actually liked men all that much, not enough to pursue a romantic relationship with them… or well.. anybody (i tried in the name of conformity and “femininity”) i didnt really like ANYBODY until coast. my emotions have always been restrained and not felt so normally, so i thought romance was like every other emotion: dull and heavily repressed with no way of expressing it. until, again i got with coast HAHAH. i figured out right away through coast that i was on the demi-aroace spectrum but i kept the bisexual label until i guess recently! nya definitely went through the same thing for the sake of convenience in his eyes.

oh but the gender labels and identity didnt stop at just highschool, recently, in my first year of graduating i confronted some deeply repressed parts of myself, and before it was put onto me it was put onto nya. i had a secret headcanon brewing.. something i kept from coast until an explosion of a trend on tiktok… i … headcanoned nya.. as a BUTCH!!!!!!!!!! i felt like the label butch was fitting for him, i was fascinated with the talk and the labels and the history of queerness and lesbianism, but i felt like i didnt belong there at all. i felt so guilty for loving the label butch so much, i just kept it to myself and nya.. my forever muse. coasty, just like they always had, supported me and coaxed that part of myself out of me into the open. they accepted me when i said “hey… what if…. i said nyas a butch…” they even accepted me when i said in a hypomanic episode “kratos from god of war is a butch and has pcos, thats why he has a beard!!” (ty bae) this just goes to show that acceptance goes a long way, and having a character you relate to so deeply does too!!

nyas canonical journey of becoming a ninja and finding her identity feels so much like my own. that scared me when i was younger, but now i feel seen and like hes my number one character. he’s basically exactly like me, the only difference is muscles and race bc im a white boy and i need to hit the gym😅 and im happy to finally be able to publicly say that! for a long time i felt like my identity wasnt mine to own, that everyone else dictated who i was.. but now i can confidently say my identity belongs to me. the power of choosing for myself means a lot to me. now i can say im nya and he is a punk riot grrrl butch who has PCOS and……… a secret third option.. (im still kinda shy to talk about headcanons abt mental health and more personal parts of myself i was born with HAHAH.. maybe i will soon though if asked) nya has definitely helped jay with her own gender journey too, i actually have a whole headcanon storyline for that lol!!!!! but yeah anyways this has been long enough… ty for asking! i loveee asks i love ranting secretly😅😅💙💙

ig i'm feeling like being a little cringe on my birthday, and talking abt what i think is one of my best/favorite artworks i've done this year, but also just... ever, so far. which is this!

the description for it is "she got me losing all my cool", because i really wanted to somehow show the effect keqing has on ganyu, like she's really going through it lol. even a 3000+ yo closed off half qilin can experience new things, grow as a person and lose her goddamn mind in bunch of ways bc of this one bold yuheng! it's a whole whirlwind of emotions.

for someone like ganyu, who maybe over the years would just keep everyone at a bit of a distance to keep herself safe within the human world, getting so worked up over and feeling so many different things about keqing is very interesting imo. ganyu's pov and development when discussing ganqing is very important to me and frankly feels overlooked. i think ganqing cannot happen without both keqing and ganyu growing as people in their own ways, and changing just enough to make space for each other in their hearts, while also remaining their own unique individuals. their relationship is very compelling that way, when they both learn from each other.

it was also one of those rare artworks i made a little sketch for, to sort of visually note down what i wanted to make lol

The rest of the crew at first struggle to understand her (except really her eventual love interest who is incredibly empathetic toward her and her struggles and I also think is autistic but he is not relevant here bc autism boy). The first show (they have a revival going on right now) does this so well, she's some of my favorite autistic representation because after the first season the crew really adjust and are just like "It's Parker (it's not weird, it’s expected of her /neutral)", and they never want her to change. They understand she struggles with social cues and sometimes needs guidance about things they think are normal, and they accept that and work with her on it to accomodate her and make what their job requires from her, easier for her. Also, her canonical relationship is one of thee most healthy relationships I've ever seen, especially with a character who has complicated feelings about romance and intimacy due to how she grew up in the foster system while also being autistic. The first show uses her character sooooo well, but I wouldn't recommend the revival because they have different writers and handle her, in my opinion, much worse and much more childishly and I HATE it. But yeah, first show??? really good love her favorite nbd rep."

They also portray her as being one of the most compassionate on the team - though often to her own chagrin, it's something that really sold her portrayal to me because while she does often come across as cold, even a bit ruthless - that's very far from all she is, and her character is so much more nuanced than I can accurately get across here 😭"

what abt dorian and felis? :3

i'm going to make a different post about dorian because felis has literally consumed MONTHS of my time

alright, so felis (genderfluid, goes by he/she, amab) is a former child actor who grew up rather lonely, having only one real friend, rudy. because he grew up just acting and interacting with fans, he learned to just fake emotions and pretending to care about people because physically could not make those emotional connections to others since he was not raised to.

in school, people wanted to be close to him only because they were interested in the clout they could get, so he became reserved and avoided people, including his Actual friend, who still kept chasing after him because they were worried. one day, he was super frustrated and lashed out at them. someone was recording, and got a video of him slapping rudy and posted it on social media. felis blamed rudy for ruining his career and shut people out entirely.

(that was all. before the events of the actual story aksjdkdkdndnn ANYWAY) so the real story begins when rudy reaches out to felis when they're both meant to go to college, asking her to go meet them one last time in a forest where they used to play as kids as one final attempt to make amends. she begrudgingly agrees to go, and they wind up fighting again and falling into a "rabbit hole" (rift in space) and getting seperated in another dimension. (oh my god they divorced so hard they got isekai'd)

they end up split up in the new world, and felis winds up in a bake shop and meeting a pair of elven siblings named clementine and lemon, who take him into the city to ask around for ways to get back home. when he gets there, he is chased around by an eccentric poet, lillos, who recognized him from a dvd of a movie that he acted in as a child.

lillos reveals that he has a collection of oddities from the human realm and offers to take felis to the site where he found these things. together, they set out for the rift between realms, constantly getting detoured by royal guards protecting the rift, bounty hunters who had never seen a human before (and immediately decided that they must be worth a lot), seemingly-natural disasters, and more. they also have to find rudy (who is on a completely different set of adventures).

in the end, felis rekindles her relationship with rudy, figures out the meaning of love and friendship, and finds her way back home where she belongs. wahoo love wins!!

anyways um actual personality blurb now SORRY... so felis is sort of stand-offish and rude. she's quick to correct or reprimand anything she doesn't like. she doesn't really smile or laugh much outside of acting. she's usually proper and poised, but she's known to get violent or snap when she's stressed. she's very opinionated and critical of others. when she's losing an argument, she gets quiet and sulky. she's got very low empathy and is bored with conversation most of the time, so she is somewhat avoidant of talking to most people. SHE DOES GET BETTER ABOUT INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE... and she does learn to apolgize and take responsibility for her own actions and stuff. she can also be polite and knows when to be quiet.

(note: Everything typed here is based off of notification walls and my interpretation of everything going on in the bunker. Right now I just speed up the time until the next day and slow down if interesting stuff happens but everything is mostly notification and pop up recaps and interactions. Because Dela is my main, I might also intervene only into HER life and choices to keep her taken care of. Everyone else is down to their own wits)

The Bunker Challenge - Week #1

Sunday Not much happened, everyone had settled down since The Event, and took to honing their skills as well as exploring the bunker. Relationship wise, forgot to mention since Dela, Mia, and Noah are Library characters, they kinda already have a thing going. Especially Mia and Dela, who are dating (letsgoooo) As much as everyone is shaken up by The Event still, Randy and Zayden have bonded over past memories. They're still at aquaintance level with each other, but with their past history of deviance.. who knows? I also forgot to mention besides the 3 Library characters the rest were randomized by the My Story system, so even I don't know their personalities or backstories besides the Library characters who already had descriptions. Randy is the only one I customized and specifically to be an asshole, so its funny he's managed to get on the same page with SOMEONE

Monday Everyone has tried working the computer, but when it came down to becoming a responsibility, looking and scouting potential areas for scavenging, Yusun was the first to step up to the job. Yusun is the only one in the Bunker now who has access to the Comms Room. Let's hope she keeps everything in tact As one would expect, things began to break after awhile. Dela (main) has taken it upon herself to repair the toilet. Not as a charity thing, more like she REALLY needed to pee and no one else was gonna do it. She's considering whether or not this might be a continuous thing, but.... Such a fall from being one of fashion and beauty to grime and filth... embarrassing. What's worse: all that handiness and she never got to use the toilet except where she wasn't supposed to. And the cherry on top was Mia and Zayden themselves were in the same room, wanting to resolve the same issue. A humiliating start for Dela for sure. Everyone has taken a liking to Randy. He's not the worse, to say the least. Yusun has definitely bonded with him over cooking, so that's good. As a matter of fact, everyone has bonded with him over cooking. Who knows, he might take a strong liking to culinary arts while he's down here. (next Gordon Ramsey ass/j) Everyone is pretty much on good terms with each other! Tuesday With the toilet more worse than a running fountain, Dela picked herself up by the bootstraps and went off to fix and clean up the mess in the bathroom, with the help of Zayden of course. She managed to fix the toilet! yay! (She's SO not happy abt it- girl I feel u) "Oh c'mon!!" Doesn't seem like the issues end there. With both the fridge and kitchen sink broken- AND the coffee machine?! Dela begans to loathe fixing ANYTHING in this bunker! how does this stuff keep breaking and when is anyone going to take accountability for it?! The fridge and sink are fixed but THATS IT! They can fix their own coffee machine.. Shoutout to Noah though for handling the bunker's trash on his own tho. We love you king </3 Also, sharing one bathroom between 8 people sucks. Of course, no one here has some sort of demolition skill or whatever so- the bathroom wars continue I guess. Mia hasn't been too good in the bunker- and certainly the past few days hasn't helped. With Dela suddenly tense and worked up about the current conditions of the bunker, she's found it quite hard to even talk to her about- well- anything! it's almost as if she's deliberately avoiding her..? Mia doesn't know, but the fear that Dela is seeing someone behind her back is eating away at her. It also doesn't help that she feels luck has been anywhere BUT by her side. It doesn't feel like there's anything to look forward to but....at least she's still alive...right? Wednesday

Dela has woken up with a bout of anxiety and existential dread that somehow..somewhere, someone is controlling her and stopping her from achieving her dreams... Well- she's half right. Not trying to knock down your parade though girlypop. She talks it out with the others at breakfast, trying her best to ignore the broken stovetop behind her. That's no longer her problem. After a feel-good talk, maybe that whispering voice might help her out now? Maybe.... >:3 She begins to feel a little less depressed sharing her ideas with the others. Whispering voice also tells her to MAYBE GO CHECK ON UR GF- After all that though, she's in a better mood! Not Zayden though. With how pent up everyone is locked in, he tried to give exercise a try to let all that pent up energy out. Not worth it. He's a sweating mess and he's feeling more tired than fulfilled. Everyone gets a bout of sadness however.. They try to remember anything from before The Event...Their livelyhood..anything. Dela takes a moment to softly cry to herself in bed, careful not to wake Randy. She can't really deal with him right now, anyways. Something he said earlier in a conversation had struck a nerve and she doesn't really want to be bothered with what he might say next. Thursday The toilet. again. broken. Isn't it supposed to have some sort of top tier plumbing system?? Dela again has to repair that and AGAIN couldn't hold it in long enough to finally reap what she's sowed, sowed, and sowed. She had to repair the shower again, and cant even use it because Devan won't leave, complaining to her about the nastiness of the bathroom. She KNOWS that. She would LOVE to at least shower if he wasn't in the way! Soon EVERYONE climbs in to stress about the cleanliness and repair issue, and it soon becomes clear they might need to assign someone these duties. Dela sure as hell won't be in charge of that. She stresses this to Mia, and sure enough she figures she'll address this to Yusun. After all, she is somewhat a leader now...right? She's the only one with access to comms. She might have some good ideas that everyone will be sure to listen to. Speaking of everyone, The bunker isn't looking too good. Everything is broken! Everyone stinks. There's mess everywhere! It becomes clear as day: They need to start giving each other jobs. But who's the one to do it? They decide they'll figure it out friday morning. Friday (First meeting) ok so do you know how HARD it is to have every sim in one room? Hard They kept leaving and even locking the doors occassionally didn't work SO eventually a meeting was held in the comms room at 10am (when it was meant to start 30 minutes earlier). Rashawn and Randy left before it could start smh But to be fair- no one was comfortable. A room full of hot sweaty smelly people was NOT anyone's dream meeting. Alas, what needed to be done needed to be done. The meeting was kept short to 15 minutes cause good GOD everyone stank. Dela shared some tips she learned about repairs to Noah, which felt like a huge weight off her shoulders now that she had someone to pass the torch to. Given that, she did not care if she had to hop on one leg and rub her elbows; She was free! and if sanitation was the only job open then she didn't mind handling that if it meant staying as far away from a wrench as humanely possible Yusun grows a bit annoyed that Randy and Rashawn were nowhere for the meeting despite what everyone agreed on. She grows a dislike for mischief It is then also decided who will go out to scavenge for resources tomorrow: (1) person will go out to look for resources. This outing will include (Zayden)

Everyone wasn't too fond of leaving I guess. To be fair, not knowing what The Event was anyways, I would be apprehensive about it too. Only Zayden volunteered, and so, He will be leaving. Let's hope he doesn't loose his head... Meanwhile Yusun has a Eureka moment! The group SHOULD hold meetings more often. Might be useful to know what everyone is up to or any future complaints might come about. No one is not against the idea either. Saturday (THE OUTING) Zayden will be leaving at dawn (6am) Everyone else will attend to their duties of course. Dela got trash and mess, Noah got repairs. Zayden does a brief stretch before leaving. He's energized and ready to go! He debates whether or not next time he should've woken up earlier to maybe gather his bearings. Mia feels unfulfilled in life, and that someone is controlling her... WHY ARE THE LESBIANS ONTO ME?/J First day for Dela and Noah's jobs and- Yikes. Noah got electrocuted He's fineeeeeeeeeeeee.... a bit dazed, but he's determined to get the job done...(He's now scared of dying, knowing that if he messes up again he just might die. His mind races with all the things he has yet to do and what he'll do once this is done and out of the way). Dela quietly debates whether she should properly help him out later. At least give him the ropes. After all, as much as she hates repairing things she's really good at it. But as Dela decides to go check in on Noah... Everyone is met in horror at his convulsing body on the kitchen floor Noah has died from electrocution Lol shocker, right? .......wrong timing? Everyone is in a state of horror and grief as the grim reaper himself....just chills lmfao. He chats with Devan briefly.....ominous..?? Yusun grieves HARD The news is enough to have her call Zayden and abort the outing altogether (I misclicked and brought him back </3) Everyone is either in a state of grief or...numbness? Some aren't too sure how to handle the situation (Fine: Around Death effect) Anyways

TL;DR - Week #1

Yusun takes on the role of controlling the Communications room Dela forms a love-hate relationship with handiness. She's terrifically good at repairs and hating everything about it (As stuff in the Bunker keeps breaking). Mia feels anxious about her place in the world and in Dela's relationship, as they are partners. Zayden is selected for the scavenging Outing

Noah becomes the Bunker Handyman, Dela becomes the janitor Noah dies of electrocution while fixing the refrigerator, leaving everyone in a state of numbing shock and/or grief. Zayden returns and aborts the mission after hearing about the death. Yusun grieves hard. Personal Note: I was NOT expecting this to be so fun actually. OFC there was some hiccups and rules had to be changed or modified, but this went smoothly. Hell- smoother than when I first created the challenge for myself years back eventually I'll edit the master post but establish some base rules if anyone wants to try this challenge too! Next time hopefully we can have a successful outing and no one dies, given I wasn't expecting one so early in the first week.

Does Jimmy ever touch on it, like is it a hard boundary Tango sets or is it sorta unspoken, or does Tango overcompensate and react which brings about a gentle conversation about boundaries since they really can't avoid each other while they're soul mates??? aww hi there!! yes absolutely, @lunarcrown and i share all the asks so it’s fine either way! i’m sort of taking care of the more story-driven stuff? but if y’all ever have art or design related questions then DEF send those over to her (cuz her art is amazing and she deserves the chance to ramble abt it <3)

anyway!! this was a very sweet ask and it really made us think about how tango’s past would affect his current relationships with the hermits and jimmy. suffice to say, a gentle conversation about boundaries is what SHOULD happen, but alas, tango’s coping mechanism is to overcompensate and pretend everything’s fine (can’t show weakness) and he happens to be surrounded by people who respect his decision not to talk about it.

the hermits for the most part don’t even know tango has Issues to this degree. after impulse’s first blaze rod related conversation w tango, he took it upon himself to let the other hermits know (subtly, individually, and in private) that tango seems to have a Thing about blaze farms- which they indeed all assumed was just cuz tango’s a blaze hybrid (impulse wanted to respect tango’s privacy, but he couldn’t just stand by and let a similar thing happen again! he tried to be as vague and delicate as possible, in any case)

as for jimmy… he doesn’t know anything about tango’s past, pre-hermitcraft. tango keeps telling himself he’ll tell jimmy but the thought is just so terrifying; being vulnerable, for one, and then the fear that jimmy will see him differently, and decide he’s not worth loving anymore. in any case, the topic of blaze doesn’t really come up for the ranchers (gotta be insane to go into the nether on double life, and no one’s making blaze rod farms here) so it’s easy enough to avoid.

that doesn’t, however, mean that jimmy never catches on that tango is keeping some pretty heavy stuff bottled up. but tango doesn’t want to talk about it, and jimmy isn’t the kind of person to force him. he just offers steadfast and patient reassurance, in the hopes that tango will feel safe enough to open up to him someday.

(it’d sure be a shame if something happened before then that involuntarily revealed tango’s past in the worst way possible…)

hey so after rewatching r1ct for the 19th time maybe i should actually get around to sendig asks abt it SO HEY i've been trying to make a more abstract sort of story and it seems i have trouble with ... being abstract in general. i usually can't come up with any sort of weird imagery or storylines without borrowing heavily from something else. it's highly inconvenient. How do you go about the concept process for your films ? any major takeaways from art school or things i should try ? :0

Wow. this is like the last ask i ever expected to get so first of all thank you for watching R1CT....19 times?!?? this may be hyperbole but either way thank you. its a project that went through a lot of stages and changes and difficulties and it means a lot to me

*puts my hands on your shoulders*i have to tell you something. there is no way you can come up with shit without referencing or borrowing from others' work. im working on a zine/book/thing about the entire journey of making it but basically my"concept process" was a 30-month mess that started out with 1 sketch on the train, which became an idea for a way too ambitious yet still half-assed fully hand-drawn second-year film..but put through the play-doh spaghetti machine of covid i started having a different relationship with myself, with my computer, with my computer-self.. and it morphed slowly and weirdly into wut it is i guess. i dont think i could recreate those circumstances if i tried lol. but yea im rambling too much so let me actually try to answer your question

so ya like i said its actually important and beneficial to borrow from other peoples works. i definitely have the privilege of going to art school to help with that cause i was exposed to a variety of different media and art and obscure films i probably wouldnt have seen otherwise. but i will say itll serve u well to branch out and look at art forms other than the one youre studying, even stuff that seems boring or not relevant. and combine the elements that inspire u the most and make something of ur own. some big inspirations that went into the melting pot early on were: the movie la selva oscura by carlos santa, the opening for the 1974 anime majokko megu-chan, the 1983 movie rock & rule, the matrix, movies by gregg araki, roberto rossellini, david lynch(sorry), elaine may, jonni phillips(to whom i owe so much), among many others; the animated series transformers: beast wars, sally cruikshank's quasi at the quackadero, the artworks of fernand leger and leopold survage (both part of the Cubist scene but had a conceptual interest in filmmaking)...... yeah i could go on for a really long time. (i guess i already did). if you look at this stuff you can probably see lots of elements of these things, in r1ct but it still ended up being something at least semi-original.. so yea go to the library look at art books watch old movies, find stuff u hate, find stuff u like. absorb shit and make shit. dont be afraid to do something way different than what youre used to. basically just go crazy

These are all sort of related to backgrounds/painting so I grouped them together even though they’re pretty much entirely separate questions.... ANYWAYS

a) How is it working as a BG artist? Is it hard? What show are you drawing for?

I think you’re the first person to ever ask me about my job! Being a background artist is great. It’s definitely labor intensive but I think that could describe pretty much any art job (If something were rote or easy to automate, you wouldn’t hire an artist to do it) and I hesitate to say whether its harder or easier than any other role in the animation pipeline. Plus, so much of what truly makes a job difficult varies from one production to the next, schedule, working environment, co-workers etc. But I will say that I think while BGs are generally a lot of work on the upfront, I think they’re subject to less scrutiny/revisions than something like character/props/effects design and you don’t have to pitch them to a room like boards. So I guess it’s good if you don’t like to talk to people? LOL

A lot of my previous projects + the show I’ve worked on the longest aren’t public yet so I can’t talk about em (but I assure you if/when the news does break I won’t shut up about it). But I’m currently working on Archer Season 12 LOL. I’m like 90% sure I’m allowed to say that.

c) What exactly do you like to draw most [in a background]?

@kaitomiury​ Lots of stuff! I really like to draw clutter! Because it’s a great opportunity for environmental storytelling and also you can be kind of messy with it because the sheer mass will supersede any details LOL. 

I like to draw clouds... I like to draw grass but not trees lol,,, I like to draw anything that sells perspective really easily like tiled floors and ceilings, shelves, lamp posts on a street etc.

d) Do you have any tips on how to paint (observational)?

god there’s so much to say. painting is really a whole ass discipline like someone can paint their whole life and still discover new things about it. I guess if you’re really just starting out my best advice is that habit is more important than product. especially with traditional plein air painting, I find that the procedure of going outside and setting up your paints is almost harder than the actual painting. There’s a lot of artists who say “I want to do plein air sometime!!” and then never actually get around to doing it. A lot of people just end up working from google streetview or photos on their computer.

But going outside to paint is a really good challenge because it forces you to make and commit to lighting and composition decisions really quickly. And to work through your mistakes instead of against them via undo button.

My last tip is to check out James Gurney’s youtube channel because hes probably the best and most consistent resource on observational painting out there rn. There’s lots other artists doing the same thing (off the top of my head I know a lot of the Warrior Painters group has people regularly posting plein air stuff and lightbox expo had a Jesse Schmidt lecture abt it last year) but Gurney’s probably the most prolific poster and one of the best at explaining the more technical stuff - his books are great too.

e) Do you have tips for drawing cleanly on heavypaint?

@marigoldfool​ UMM LOL I LIKE ONLY USE THE FILL TOOL so maybe use the fill tool? Fill and rectangle are good for edge control as opposed to the rest of the heavy paint tools which can get sort of muddles. And also I use a stylus so maybe if you’re using your finger, find a stylus that works with your device instead. That’s all I’ve got, frankly I don’t think my drawings are particularly clean lol.

f) Tips on improving backgrounds/scenes making them more dynamic practicing etc?

Ive given some tips about backgrounds/scenes before so I’m not gonna re-tread those but here’s another thing that might be helpful...

I think a good way to approach backgrounds is to think of the specific story or even mood you want to convey with the background first. Thinking “I just need to put something behind this character” is going to lead you to drawing like... a green screen tourist photo backdrop. But if you think “I need this bg to make the characters feel small” or “I need this bg to make the world feel colorful” then it gives you requirements and cues to work off of.

If I know a character needs to feel overwhelmed and small, then I know I need to create environment elements that will cage them in and corner them. If a character needs to feel triumphant/on top of the world then I know I need to let the environment open up around them. etc. If I know my focal point/ where I want to draw attention, I can build the background around that.

Also, backgrounds like figure compositions will have focal points of their own and you can draw attention to it/ the relationship the characters have with the bg element via scale or directionality or color, any number of cues. I think of it almost as a second/third character in a scene.

Not every composition is gonna have something so obvious like this but it helps me to think about these because then the characters feel connected and integrated with the environment.

Some more general art questions

a) Do you have any process/tips to start drawing character/bodies/heads?

I tried to kind of draw something to answer this but honestly this is difficult for me to answer because I don’t think I’m that great at drawing characters LOL. Ok, I think I have two tips.

1) flip your canvas often. A lot about what makes human bodies look correct and believable is symmetry and balance. Even if someone has asymmetrical features, the body will often pull and push in a way to counterbalance it. we often have inherent biases to one side or another like dominant hands dominant eyes etc. you know how right-handed artists will often favor drawing characters facing 45 degrees facing (the artist’s) left? that’s part of it. so viewing your drawing flipped even just to evaluate it helps compensate for that bias and makes you more aware of balance.

2) draw the whole figure often. I feel like a lot of beginner artists (myself included for a long time) defer to just drawing headshots or busts because it’s easier, you dont have to think about posing limbs etc. But drawing a full body allows you to better gauge proportion, perspective, body language, everything that makes a character look believable and grounded.

Like if you (me) have that issue where you draw the head too big and then have to resize it to fit the proportions of the rest of the body, it’s probably because you (I) drew the head first and are treating the body as an afterthought/attachment. Sketching out the whole figure first or even just quick drawing guides for it will help you think of it more holistically. I learned this figure drawing in charcoal at art school LOL.

oh. third mini tip - try to draw people from life often! its the best study. if you can get into a figure drawing/nude drawing class EVEN BETTER and if you have a local college/art space/museum that hosts those for free TREASURE IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, that’s a huge boon that a lot of artists (me again) wish they had. though if youre not so lucky and youre sitting in a park trying to creeper draw people and they keep moving.. don’t let that stop you! that’s good practice because it’s forcing you to work fast to get the important stuff down LOL. its a challenge!

b) I’ve been pretty out of energy and have had no inspiration to draw but I have the desire to. Any advice?

Dude, take a walk or something.... Or a nap? Low energy is going to effect everything else so you gotta hit that problem at its source.

If you’re looking for inspiration though, I’d recommend stuff like watching a movie, reading a book, playing video games etc. Fill up your idea bank with content and then give yourself time/space to gestate it into new concepts. Sometimes looking at other art works but sometimes it can work against you because it’s too close. 

Also something that helps me is remembering that art doesn’t always have to be groundbreaking... like it’s okay to make something shitty and stupid that you don’t post online and only show to your friend. That’s all part of the process imo. If you want to hit a home run you gotta warm up first, right? Sports.

I should probably compile everytime i give tips on stuff like this but that’s getting dangerously close to being a social media artist who makes stupid boiled down art tutorials for clout which is the last thing i want to be... the thing I want to stress is that art is a whole visual language and there are widely agreed upon rules and customs but they exist in large part to be broken. Like there's an infinite number of ways to reach an infinite number of solutions and that’s actually what makes it really cool and personal for both the artist and the viewer. So when you make work you like or you find someone else’s work you like, take a step back and ask yourself what about it speaks for you, what about it works for you, what makes it effective, how to recreate that effect and how to break that effect completely, etc. And have a good time with it or else what’s the point.

Let me preface this by saying- I’m the one into mythology. My friends are going off of a two month unit three years ago and whatever mythology they’ve read/absorbed from modern media. None of this is taken to be offensive, and it is all based off of Ancient Greek Mythology and not hellenic polytheism.

Most of the time it’s momentarily while she's already in the middle of sprinting, to give herself a boost with a bound or two, or if she trips or feels herself falling forward while running she'll shift onto all fours which is is how she originally developed that "reflex", to prevent herself from falling while running, but eventually she started using it a little more often 

She can also just walk normally on all fours too but she usually only uses it while running 

She likes to show off her object collections to Mono, he’s very supportive :] Loves long car rides, as well as Runaway

what i know abt qifrey from u talking abt him uhh ok so he's genuinely just a nice guy but also he's evil and irredeemable but also he's literally just a pleasant gentleman

I know ur not asking for a rant about this but by god ur gonna get it.

So the thing is, I don't think Qifrey is evil or irredeemable at all. We joke around the fandom (at least i hope its mostly jokes) that he's evil and crazy but he's really not. If id have to pin Qifrey on a morality spectrum I'd say morally gray but leaning towards the good.

Did Qifrey do some messed up stuff? Yes, fo sure. But I've always gotten more of an impression that he's teetering towards the edge and not completely over it. He does do damage but so far he's mostly made sure that damage was extremely localized and not actually harming other people (I talked about before how Qifrey's own memory erasing spell seems weirdly specialized compared to what we were brought to believe memory erasing spell actually does when used by anyone else).

But now comes the question

Do I think Qifrey will get worse?

Yes, 100% I believe this is where we are going towards, I said before that I'm p convinced he will become some kind of obstacle for Coco down the line.

Qifrey is going through a LOT rn. He's already got ptsd from, you know being stripped of his identity, buried alive, almost drowned and then remembering he was experimented on like a lab rat, but now it's getting worse. Before he could at least relay on the fact that even though his past was horrible, his future was bright. He genuinely loves his job, he loves his girls, he loves teaching. This monolog gets me every single time

Now he's losing his future, he's losing not only his eye, but the whole identity he built out of nothing, he's losing his teaching position, he's losing his kids, he's losing Everything he gained after he had already lost Everything.

It leaves him rushing against an uncertain time limit, desperate, stumbling, sloppy. I don't think he's thinking straight anymore, not really. I think he's convinced he is being methodical and calculating but in actuality he's stumbling forward, grasping at straws, unable to hold on to anything but his need for revenge and the empty words that his actions aren't only for his own sake.

It's all very striking, in his relationship with Olruggio in particular. Olruggio is very clearly supposed to be the guiding light for Qifrey, the one who pulls him back when he goes too far, the one who helps him resist the growing darkness. It's very meaningful how as Qifrey continues on his path he makes sure Olruggio doesn't even know about it. He said it himself, if Olruggio knew, he'd try to save him. He'd try to bring Olruggio to light again and Qifrey doesn't WANT to be saved, he has decided on a road he wants to take and he won't allow anyone to change his course. Not even Olruggio.

So do I think Qifrey is evil?

No

Do I think he'll get worse?

Yes

Do I think he'll become evil?

Not really

See here's the thing. Qifrey's desperation, how quickly he's trying to work through this, how determined he is to throw everything else under the bus if he could just achieve his goals? All of that is dictated by the fact he's running out of time, the fact that once he loses his eyesight he can no longer be a witch. Eyesight is VERY important to witches since magic is a very visual art. We've seen with Tartar how something as seemingly miniscule as color blindness can basically doom someone, causing everyone around them to say they can't become a witch without good eyesight. So complete blindness is a death sentence to a witches career. Now, it's funny how a lot of the Coustas and Tartars arc has to do with adjusting the world to disability and not the person to the world. How it's made pointed, over and over again, that people with disabilities shouldn't be written off but given proper tools that will help them function, how the world should adjust to be a more comfortable place for all kinds of people and not just those who are already adjusted to it. Without the threat of his eyesight going out and cutting his whole identity into bits, Qifrey wouldn't have to act like this, he would be able to sit and think and not rush and if he still wants to pursue brimhats he could do it more safely for himself and everyone else because the desperation factor would be gone.

So what I think is going to happen is that Qifrey will lose his eyesight but won't lose his standing as a witch because he, Olruggio and the kids will figure out how to make magic accessible to him.

Now there's of course a bunch more unaccounted for variables which I'll probably have a better grasp on after the current arc is done being translated. Ininia and Lord Restis represent a very interesting development because they are brimhats introduced specifically via healing injuries. The rule of 'medicine magic isn't allowed cuz it's a slippery slope' has been there since the beginning of the series and a big thorn in the 'yeah the witch world rules are good and fair' side cuz of course, everyone thinks healing people should be allowed. Now the brimhats we've had so far were fully ready to attack and experiment on children's bodies in order to further their own goals so of course that immediately leaves you disliking them and not putting much account into their rhetoric even though it does make sense at times, but ur not gonna listen to ppl experimenting on kids. That's why I think Ininia and Lord Restis are interesting, cuz if they aren't literally attacking children they might get a good case in about medicine magic being allowed. I think we are going towards at least some sort of medicine magic becoming acceptable considering Tartar's arc. But then the question is, if some sort of medicine magic is approved, will it be used to heal disabilities cuz like...that would kinda suck. I would much rather have a 'world should be adjusted so disabled people can participate in it equally' narrative rather than the 'just heal the disability with magic lol' narrative. But honestly this whole paragraph is pure speculation because the arc isn't fully translated or even fully out yet but I sure af am LOOKING at it. I think it will be v important in understanding where the story is going to go. I just hope Shirahama does a good job with it, but honestly she never once let me down up until now so I'm feelin positive.

Circling back to Qifrey, I do think he's one of the kindest, most understanding, most lovable characters I've had a joy of reading and studying. But he does have a black hole in him that is pulling apart all that kindness, leaving him a shattering shell. I don't think he's evil, I don't think he'll ever become truly evil and despite what he's done I don't think any of what he did is irredeemable, especially with how careful he tends to be not to take away from people more than he has to to further his own goals. But I do think that hole will eat at him more and more and that before he can get better somebody will have to notice it and help him plug it up. Olruggio noticed and Qifrey refused the help, convinced that he can't be helped, not in the way he needs. He will need proof that he can keep his future before he can ease up on the frantic hunt after his past

i’ve written some fics before with abusive and dub-con elements in it. i personally don’t find an issue with that. i see it more as a plot element. it’s not glorified and it’s easy to see in the story that it’s presented as like— hey, this is fucked up that the character is doing this. but it’s also a way to expand on characterization. not all characters are morally correct, just like real life people aren’t. not all relationships are healthy, and as a writer, it’s interesting to explore those elements while having the full understanding that it’s wrong in real life. the thing is that it’s a story, and— man, i don’t even know how to phrase this, really. idk. i am trying so hard to be respectful but if you’re expecting all fictional relationships to be 100% healthy i don’t know what to say. fiction exists for a reason.

as for like, zoo/necrophilia, trust me, i think that’s weird too lol. people are into some fucked up stuff! as long as they can contain their interests to fiction that i am 100% free to scroll past and ignore, okay. i mean, whatever. weird, but you do you. through fiction, lol.

i think part of the issue here is assuming that all media with harmful elements immediately glorifies said elements, which i don’t think is really the case (other than incest, which i will admit tends to be in a lot of media like porn, which i personally never watch bc it grosses me out lol). but a lot of the stuff i come across clearly presents it as like, hey, this is fucked up, but it’s being written into the story to show how fucked up these characters are, or the author is working through personal trauma and that’s a way for them to vent. i will admit tho! there is definitely stuff out there that glorifies it. i don’t agree with that, but i also hope that people have the sense to understand that fictional glorification doesn’t translate to real life… unfortunately i understand that not everyone does. i wish they would tho 😅

i will admit i am mostly focusing on written fiction when i say all this, mainly bc i don’t tend to look at a lot of art (probably my own weird hangups around sexual stuff, idk, i don’t wanna see it but i can read abt it). but from what i know, most of that art is very stylized, to the point that like… i mean, real people don’t look like anime characters, yknow? i know for a fact that drawing porn of real life kids is illegal, and on that i 100% agree that it’s fucked up, but anime style art doesn’t have that same basis in reality, if that makes sense. altho take this paragraph with a grain of salt, i fully admit i don’t have a solid opinion on “”problematic”” art.

anyway, i know this was a long response, i just wanted to sort out my thoughts and address all the points you brought up. let me know if you’re interested in having a genuine conversation about this! as long as it’s respectful, i would love to hear your insights.
