Hello! Not really a question related to your characters but moreso to you art in general: sometime ago someone asked you how you keep the faces of your characters so consistent and you advised them to use a 3D modeling program. I happened to read that post and tried your suggestion and it's been so incredibly useful and life changing!! What I admire about you is that you're so insanely talented but also so honest and humble, many artists out there brag about not using references because "it's for the weak" (bullshit lol), but instead you are so kind to share your tips with other people 😭😭😭 I have a question for your in terms of poses: I think you mentioned you have a library of pictures as references, but do you also happen to use a posing tool? If so, which one would you recommend?
Thank you for being an amazing artist and an inspiration 🙏🙏🙏
gosh thank u so much, I’m so very glad to hear it helped you!! also MORE than happy to talk about using references nd tracing references and photobashing at every opportunity I get. It took me a long time to “accept” that I’m just not an artist that can draw well without references nd even a clear vision of what I want as it kinda gives me security in the process and I do think that this applies to a good amount of artists btw! Like aiming towards being able to draw fully without references may be fun and worthwhile for some but definitely isn’t the standard imo, and there’s not much to be gained from it besides personal fulfillment (or maybe being able to flex to non-artists if you like that) considering that this is so far from away professional expectations too. Not minimizing the effort or joy one might get from freehanding at all btw, but to me its similar to looking at another art style that I adore but will never work out for me personally if that makes sense
anyways yes I do use a posing tool at times, currently I mostly use MagicPoser since it’s convenient! I have mentioned this before but I don’t think relying on posing programs too much is useful, meaning the 3d model made for programs like that will never be able to replicate the bend of muscles/fat etc well enough to fully rely on it and you do very much need to be aware of this. I tend to very, very roughly make the pose I want in the app, mostly to understand angle and perspective, and then I will photobash nd liquify it afterwards (good to mention here that often times you want to stylize proportions too) to get the actual reference I need. I take pictures of my hands, cut together reference photos nd pictures of the head 3D models I made and just kinda…. collage everything until it looks vaguely like what I had in mind🙏
I do have a few of the original poses saved still in case someone is curious how far i tend to go with them/how much effort I actually put in
#blakemail#im also working on a posing app myself but dont tell anyone i said that#teams on a break rn since everyone is finishing up degrees itll be a while. very self indugent app in regard to what id like to see too🙏

Hello dear followers of mine (with rizz). I decided with love to share some of my silly art tips and tricks. I love teaching people new things or just being of some sort of help, so I hope this silly goofy series of posts helps someone!
Today's soup tip deals with the greatest evil of mankind:
H a n d s.
It goes without saying that it takes practice and time, and truly it really does take practice and time, you're not going to master anything overnight, and drawing hands are definitely not an exception. I'm not incredible at drawing hands in any way, there's plenty I could improve on in the hands department, but for the most part I think I do pretty well.
It definitely took practice and years of hard work, but here's some little things I found made drawing hands easier for me!
1. FNAF - yes. As a gen z kid growing up, I, like many others of my age, became obsessed with FNAF. I continue to be a huge fan of the games and keep up with the lore for the most part but the most important thing about this is Sister Location! Sister location's animatronics have newer features and characters with slightly more human design. This includes the hands!
Baby is a great example, as you can see her hands pretty well. The hands for the most part are a pretty good model of a deconstructed hand. It's not perfect, but it definitely works! So yes I am telling you to try drawing animatronic hands because they will definitely help give you an idea of how hands should look.
2. Using your own hands - sometimes you just can't find the right reference image or you need something in the right angle. Congratulations you have a free and easy to use tool right at your finger tips. Literally! I like to use my phone and pose my hand however I want and take a picture and use that as a reference. It also helps if you take that picture and mark it up to help you. I've used my own hand many times before and I usually find it much easier to draw my own hand than one i find on Pinterest. You could also mark up your hand with washable marker.
3. Practicing some basic exercises - boring but unfortunately true. I found a few quick drawing exercises extremely helpful, specifically drawing boxes in perspective and filling a page with ellipses. This is a good tip for drawing ANYTHING.
Another thing I found helpful was drawing things in real life. So yeah grab your favorite coffee mug or Paul Stanley funko pop and prop it up somewhere and try drawing it to the best of your ability. Try figuring out how to break it down into simple 3D shapes, how to shade certain areas, etc.
A good tip for this is to use your pencil and eye to measure. You might be familiar with movies or shows where the artist uses their pencil or paintbrush or thumb to measure something and that's exactly what im talking about here. Try to measure using your eye and a pencil as a guide. It'll help you learn "how long is this part in relation to the whole object? How wide?" Etc etc. I will do a post in the future with step by step pictures of this process :3
AND THOSE ARE MY ARTIST TIPS FOR TODAY
I hope this helps someone, since these are all things that helped me over the years and recently, but if it doesn't work for you, something eventually will. Different things work for different people. 🧡

How to Ratatwang Your Panda
Hello, before I start this, I know the grammar in this post will be off, but I hope it's at least in some way understandable. If you’re wondering about the film itself, I'm probably not going to send it to any of you due to legal reasons, but don't worry, I will explain this film to you.
There's a scene in Amazing World of Gumball from "The Treasure" about a movie called "How to Ratatwang Your Panda." The appearance of this movie was made as a parody of two mockbuster films by the Brazilian animation studio Video Brinquedo; however, the movie was planned to be a real television show. I will explain.
The show itself wasn't made for release due to reasons I'm about to discuss later in the post, but instead was used for parody in Gumball. The reason for this was that Warner Bros. wanted to have the creator of this certain show about a white cat with giant cheeks and black patches make it (I forgot the name of the show; correct me if you know), but he never did it until now.
It was mainly for other reasons, like focusing on his show; however, it didn't seem like that; he had intentions for the film, and I got involved with him directing the film.
You see, I was more of an animator at Cartoon Network Studios, and our ideas were low, mostly just doing stupid things like sitting around and drinking all day. The other employees were chill and pretty nice.
How did I get involved with this film? Well, judging by the little amount of experience I had with the 3D software, I did what I could to make a perfect film; unfortunately, my ideas were shut off since the director had darker intentions, and my idea on the title card was self-explanatory, so we went with it.
For the film itself, we modeled a panda as the main protagonist, and the bad rats are the main villains of the film. The panda’s name is Chuck, and our idea for the film was to be our version of Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda and Disney Pixar’s Ratatouille, or at least inspired by them.
However, the director had his ideas, and due to the film being his movie, he wanted to make it darker and quite disturbing even for the standards of this company, being, you know, aimed at younger audiences, even though we have Adult Swim; heck, his ideas weren't even for that either.
Before we modeled Chuck, the director wanted to make his own costume identical to the panda model so he could attract children and hold them close as they cried out for their parents. Luckily, we refused this idea, and the director listened to us.
It got weirder the next day when the director started talking about including violent moments that wouldn’t make it to children's TV, and yes, if you’re wondering, he mentioned things about harming children on camera, which wasn’t fitting since the plot was about a panda whose enemy is a group of rats, which is pretty innocent.
Even if we didn’t allow a lot of his suggestions, he still kept everything up, and the film was delayed as he kept wanting disturbing content to be added, such as in 1933, when there was a short called Peanut Vendor and he wanted to include a scene from that short; of course, he wouldn’t include the background song from Red Nichols due to us not owning the rights to it; the creepy part about this short was the design of the monkey itself; and to make matters worse, he wanted to add screaming from children.
While that may not be related, this is what he suggested.
We ended up not including it, but unfortunately, after we left for the day, he snuck into the animating room and started adding his ideas, and to make matters worse, yes, he kidnapped children to do this. How am I aware of this? Well, a friend of mine checks the security cameras periodically, and he shared this with me. We can say that he was definitely creeped out by the thing he was looking at, and I certainly can’t blame him.
However, after the director left, we came back, and nobody in the building knew what happened, so we continued working on the film, played the film on our player, and sat down to watch. The film started with my title card; clearly, this was originally planned to be a show, so I chuckled, and everybody did. I went to our vending machine, put a coin in the slot, and got my diet coke.
As I came back to the couch, the show started, and the rat that’s on Chuck’s good side asked him to pull out his secret weapon.
What we wanted to do was include a fart joke to make babies laugh, but that wasn’t included, even though we remember adding that. Instead, the scene we got was Chuck taking out a katana and slashing the rats, and their insides came out. Yeah, that’s what we saw; we didn’t care as we could take it out, and as the screen was zooming in on the bodies, it cut to the next scene.
What we saw was disturbing, and half of the other animators weren’t looking at the screen.
It was a person in a low-budget costume, resembling Chuck, with what looked like human eyes; he had stitches over his body; there was a video being played over and over of him grabbing rats and hitting their bodies on a rock until it fractured a bone in their bodies. As this graphic scene was happening, I realized that it might’ve been the director playing Chuck in this scene; I should’ve tried to get him to stop.
Some of the animators who weren’t looking at the screen started looking at the screen, just like everyone else; their pupils got smaller, and they were in pure horror. Suddenly, there were sounds of branches being stepped on, and the camera panned out to see who it was—it was a white cat. Just like Chuck, he was covered in stitches, and he had a plastered smile going from cheek to cheek, He also has black patches on his body.
It was Sammy the Cat; well, that’s who I thought it was, since I remembered that it was a character created by the director of this film.
Anyway, Chuck noticed Sammy, and the cat picked up a sledge-hammer and struck the panda with it, shattering the skull as I heard the crack. Instead of a cracking noise, it was a comedic hitting sound, similar to the sound that the 3 Stooges used. Yeah, I agree that it was pretty random to bring up that show, but it is the same sound.
As the cat was mutilating the costumed panda, he grabbed a stick and started jabbing the stick into his chest until it started cutting into the tissue and damaging the organs. After that, he started drawing numerous characters from other CN shows, such as Ed from Ed, Edd n Eddy, and Chowder from the show of the same name, on the panda’s body while making that unpleasant sound of skin tearing and other disgusting crap. I almost puked in my mouth; a lot of animators did.
After the scene, loud and horrible sounds of children would be audible; they were so loud that every employee in the building heard them. Some of them came to the animating room, and they were horrified by the footage being shown.
It was footage from Peanut Vendor, like I mentioned, and what the director suggested.
The Peanut Vendor was selling peanuts, and yes, the design was as disturbing and the same as the original 1933 film, If Len Lye were here, he would be creeped out by the fact that his film was being used in such a way, The footage then stopped with the monkey staring at the viewer, and the screaming from children stopped.
Everybody in the room was getting uncomfortable with the monkey and the look of it in general; it cuts to the front side of CN, the building we’re inside of right now. However, when I noticed something in the window of the building, the employees and animators allowed me to examine it; clearly, it was something paranormal. If I recall, when my friend was looking at the security footage (he’s in the animating room, by the way), he saw an employee start running in the hallway cameras, followed by a gunshot, He didn’t investigate it; he just focused on the man who snuck into the animating room that night.
It was claimed that the figure in the window was the ghost of the employee who worked here. Also, I would like to point out that we at customer service, if you ever ask us about the death of this employee, would say that there weren't any deaths of any employees here.
However, after the last scene ended, the DVD came out of the player. Luckily, we never aired it, but if you want to watch this DVD, you will never watch it, and if you want to watch it, we took the first scene from this film, brought it back to the original animation with the farting scene, and we gave it to Ben Bocquelet so he could include it as a parody in his episode of Amazing World of Gumball, titled, as I mentioned in the beginning of this post, The Treasure.
We never told him about the directors’ idea of the film or showed him any screenshots; we just gave it to him.
I would like to end this post by saying that if you ever contact customer service, you won’t get the answer you’re looking for, and we will say no to this film ever existing, and we will point all signs to the cleaned-up version of the one used in Gumball; watch that instead.
As always, thank you for reading my post. Make sure to not work with a director whose mind is as dark as a dinner that was in the oven for too long.

Happy New Year guys!
I remembered that I forgot to post here my whole year summary, not only art related, so here's some reading under the cut :)
Some stuff can repeat what I've already said, but it gives more details
The main summary
- Suddenly my little circle of friends became a bit bigger. I got one close friend more too. This fact still makes me really happy - This point kinda relates to the previous one, but I even managed to be in relationships (in the distant ones tho), which a year ago I wouldn’t even be able to predict. Unfortunately it didn’t last long cause of circumstances beyond my control. It’s still a tiny bit sad and feels like a cruel joke of life/universe on me, but it still was nice while it lasted and I cherish these memories. And well, the contact wasn’t lost too since we’re still having pretty good friendship :> - Suddenly got my interest in tech/IT related stuff back. Once again, thanks to the bigger circle of friends. Cause once you have someone excited about some thing - you eventually become no less excited. It’s spreading - I’ve got a Mac mini 2012 lmao. For what purpose? I have no idea, just for fun, out of curiosity, and for the sake of new knowledge - I’ve been feeling way better mentally this year! Which is great, considering how low I was past year. I definitely had not the best periods this year too, but over all - stuff was not bad. I wasn’t stressing about the lack of commissions, as well as I wasn’t stressing about slow grow of my accs. I was just chilling, doing my own stuff. - I settled down in IZ fandom. Even got some followings from rly cool people. That’s really nice - With some incredible kind of luck and help of my friend I got IZ artbook. It still feels surreal, especially considering whole situation with my country of residence - It was incredibly unplanned, but now I have a cat. It just happened. I still get a ton of emotions watching him, cause the only cats I’ve contacted my whole life were either someone’s cats or strays. It also feels pretty good when your pet is not being aggressive to you and sometimes gives you some attention.
The art summary
- Probably one of the most important things that happened this year: I got accepted as a background artist to a fan animated project. Yes, it’s completely voluntary work and I won’t get anything material from it. But I’ve got into a circle of really cool and nice people, especially in the department I’m in. Everything is still getting prepared for production, so I’m just sitting there and participate in some activities. But I’m really excited to be involved in smth that big in my fav fandom. - I heccin finally started to learn blender! And I even manage to make something there. Very happy, it’s very useful - I fanarted a lot. I’ve never fanarted as much as this year - I’ve made a bit more of meaningful personal art than before - Got back to the kukuri arpg closer to the end of the year - Even tho I get commissions mostly from one person but… it suddenly turned out that I started to earn somewhat not bad amount of money (I’ve looked how much I earned over this year and was genuinely surprised LMAO. I got more than during the last two years altogether)
Afterword/plans
Like the last year, it’s still really hard to plan anything ahead. The max I can do is to make a little list of “I wish I’d….” So here, I wish I’d: - finally sit and made different animatics and finish started animation - finish one started 3d model - move at least somewhere in the sense of learning frontend stuff - make smth with music, especially since now I have access to Logic Pro too. And well, it’s been quite a while since I was doing some music last time We will see tho how it will turn out in the end. Even tho the list is not really big
In the rest, besides of having that dread of unpredictable future feeling, now I feel curious to see what’s gonna be next and hope for the better
Cause I still have a little feeling that this year was another turning point for me.
I just remembered that I wanted to post it here for days but was forgetting LMAO
But here it is, little summary for this year!
I have no idea if any improvement is visible here, but I'll find it out eventually xD What I do know is that this year definitely is an IZ year for me :D
It's been a pretty wild year. If anyone would tell me that I'll get into the animation team for a fan project as a background artist - I wouldn't believe it. But here I am.
I also got some new friends, too! And I'm really happy about it. Was pretty close having a partner too which is no less wild, but stuff fell apart faster than I expected :( there's no one's fault tho, and was nice anyway
Tl;dr: this year was heccin awesome. It was way better than previous one, and for most of it I felt mentally so much better.
Lil bonus with mine improvement since 2010 is under the cut :>
It's indeed been a journey so far.
I think, the first few years were the hardest ones, since I remember I used to be bullied for my newbie art and unwilling to listen to critique, which made me delete all my accs and change my nickname a few times. I mean, I indeed was kinda cringy child way back then, and I'm really sorry to those kind people who tried to help but I didn't listen to them or just couldn't apply it, yet it wasn't a good excuse to make someone feel even worse just cause of these reasons.
I also remember how I tried to drop art a couple of times in period from 2012 to 2014. As you can see - no success, I became too addicted to drawing and painting to just give up that easily.
And honestly? It's really neat to see how much I've improved. I indeed could do it faster, but apparently I'm a slow-learner.
I still have a lot to learn. And I'm really looking forward where my skill will be in a few more years
And I hope that this thing might inspire at least someone just a lil bit.

I used to want to be an artist but then i stopped drawing for like 7 years. I want to go back but i'm scared and dont know where to start. So yes, i am interested in those drawing videos can you post them if you dont mind? ^_^
Of course!! I am in the same situation as you actually. I used to draw a lot in middle school (2010-2012) but my depression worsened during high school and in college, I’d only draw as a distraction, never seeking to study or improve. I decided to get back this year, since I decided drawing was the only thing I could see myself doing professionally. I felt very lost, because how do you get back? How do you know what’s your actual, current, art skill? What are your weaknesses? Your strong points?
That’s how I learned to study the fundmentals of art. Because visual art is not a skill. It is a set of skills, if you are very good at anatomy but not really when coming to painting your art is going to look differently than someone who learned anatomy in how to draw manga books but paint like a pro. I am going to divide this post in categories, Also, all the videos I link I also recommend all the channels they are from! My favorites are The Drawing Database, Sycra and Ganev, Sycra and The Drawing Databse have a little of everything and are great at explaining. Ganev is a bit sarcastic but I like the way he teaches. I took some parts of the text of this post from here.
How do I begin? How do you even get back at art? What tips should you use? These are general tips videos, usually nice to draw along. /the fundmentals and how to get started/ /5 tips for better drawing/ /perfect pratice/ /beginner’s guide/ /5 tips for digital art/ /10 tips to improve/ /why your drawings are stiff/ /what level is your art/ /improve your art fast/ /drawing basics/ /how to hold and control your pencil/ /intuitive drawing method/ /iterative drawing/
The Fundamentals: Proportion & Placement Proportion is relationship between one element and another. In the visual arts proportion relates most importantly to the abstract quality of scale and placement. You know how stereotypically an artists puts a pencil to their eye when looking at an object? They’re mesuring the proportion of the object in question and how to represent it corectly in the drawing. /principles of proportion/ /ways to create illusion of space/ /drawing the human figure/ /how to draw proportions playlist/ /how to use proportion in character design/ /basic anatomy and proportions part one/ /part two/ /part three/ /part four/ /proportion basics/
Form & Construction The idea of form is how we see the 3D objects in or world and transform them into 2D in the paper/canvas. It’s understading that eveyrthing is made up of basic forms. /dynamic sketching part one/ /part two/ /how to draw forms/ /structure/ /building form/ /another how to draw forms/ /how to visualize 3D forms/ /form study process/
Perspective & Depth Perspective is knowing that as things move away from the viewer’s eye, things seem to get smaller. Get familiarized with terms like horizon line and vanishing point. This is the basic that must be understood to learn perspective. Here’s a good article about this. /an intro video on the subject/ /step by step tutorial/ /perspective basics part one/ /part two/ /part three/ /part four/ part five /part six/ /another basics video/ /20 perspective lessons/ /eye level tip/ /linear perspective/ /simple form perspective/ /drawing the figure in perspective/
Anatomy Anatomy is something I think it’s one the most crucials things to learn in order to make your drawing look good. Once you understand how joints work you’ll be able to see how bones and muscles move. And this goes for anything with a skeleton. It’s one of those things of you learn the rules before breaking them. I am linking different playlists, since linking different videos on various parts of anatomy would take forever. Just study a body part at time: head, eyes, nose, lips, ears, shoulders, neck, hairline, breats, torso, hands, feet etc. /how to do an anatomy tracing/ /playlist 1 / /draw the head from any angle/ /anatomy for artists/ /draw facial features/ /how to draw and paint/ /playlist 2/ /draw 3/4 head with loomis method/ /playlist 3/ /drawing a head in 3 hours (this one is great to draw along with the artist)/ /how to draw a body/ draw a head with loomis method part 1/ /part 2/ /part 3/ /decipgering bridgman’s anatomy/ /anatomy quick tips/
Gesture Gesture drawing is a method of capturing figures in exaggerated poses, usually drawn quickly. It is important to undersand that the goal of all gesture is to study the figure and see how it moves. I like looking at poses and copying them. Here’s a good article. /how to draw gesture/ /how to draw any pose/ /draw interesting poses/ /a guide on gesture drawing/ /tips for expressive dynamic poses/ /figure drawing tips/
Composition The overall layout of a piece is very important. Artists often consider things like the rule of thirds or the infamous golden ratio. Neither truly defines a composition, but they can both go into your decision making. /composition in art/ /understanding composition/ /10 composition tips/ /beginner’s guide to composition/ /art fundamental: composition/
Value Studying value is very much the study of light and shadow. But there is a technical side of light that you’ll want to pay attention to if you’re going for technical rendering. /guide on rendering/ /seeing light and shadows in daily life/ /10 minutes to a better painting/ /understaing colors and values/ /shading basics/ /ambient occlusion/ /shadow colors/ /tips on how to shade/ /draw shadows on objects and people/ /lighting tutorial/
Color Theory Color theory is understanding which colors go good with eachother, and knowing the pyschology behind it. (what are cool colors? what colors make someone feel comfortable?) It is fundamental in art for you to understand the relationship between colors and what makes them look good. Best color theory books. A comprehensive guide to color theory. /hue value saturation in photoshop/ /color theory for noobs/ /understanding color/ /what you should know about colors/ /warm and cool colors/ /the basic elements/ /choose colors that work/
Traditional Media If you draw in traditional media, all videos above can be used easily. These are just videos for general tips in traditional media, there isn’t many since my focus is digtal ^^’ /watercolor tips/ /draw with colored pencils/ /blending colored pencils/ /4 how to draw lessons/ /Block in colors/ /holding the brush/ /
Digital Media Digital art is how everyone’s been doing art these days. It doesn’t matter if you’re doing with your phone or your computer. I don’t do art on my phone, I know the most used app is mediabang for android and procreate for apple, and I think anyone who is able to do art with their finger is very skilled. If you are like me and prefer doing art on your computer, you probably have your tablet. If not, well you should have. Not having a tablet is not an option if you want to get better at art ^^’ Best tablet for beginners in 2020. Or you can just buy an old used one, if it still works, and you are a beginner, a small intuos is all you need. When talking about softwares, the three big ones I see people using are: Photoshop, Clip Paint Studio and Paint Tool Sai. The best one is CPS, but I find Sai easier to navigate, but CPS is extremely complete and I hope to be able to master it someday. CPS Tutorials. I don’t have much to say about photoshop, people use it mostly because they’ve been using it forever lol I divide my digital painting process in steps: Sketch/Lineart/Color Blocking/Shading/Blending/Color correction. Sketch is the basics, draw your idea. Lineart is to clean your sketch. Color Blocking is to color your drawing one color, so it’s easier to work in it. Shading is to understand where the lighting sources are coming from and apply them. Blending is to blend the colors of your drawing with brushes. Color correction is when I use filters of hue/saturation and others to make the drawing more appealing. These require understadings of the software of your choice which I am not very good at the moment so I can’t give you more tips than that ^^’ Hopefully these videos can help. /perspective grid/ /clean line art/ /coloring process/ /make lineart interesting/ /best brushes for digital painting/ /skin shading tutorial/ /lineart vs painting/ /art in clip studio paint/ /hair tutorial/ /3 tips for improving/ /10 digital art mistakes/ /color block tutorial/ /shading skin/ /from lineart to painting/ /cleaner lineart/ /add texture to your art/ /improve your art with better shadows/ /the importance of brushes/ /use layer modes/ /improve your lines/ /how to blend colors/ /another blending tutorial/ /color blocking/
Exercises It’s no secret that to improve on art, you must pratice. Everyday, even if it’s just a little! A great way to pratice is make use of youtube picture in picture function to draw along in your software of choice. /pratice drawing forms/ /proportion exercises/ /perspective exercises/ /value studies/ /creative drawing exercises/ /simple drawing esercises/
Resources Senshi stocks, a deviantart page full of poses photos. Quick poses, pictures of models, contains nudes. Character design references DesignDoll, create a personalized sketch doll and make it pose.
Phew!!! This took forever to make and is way more than you asked for, but I decided to go all in so I can have a masterpost for me too and for anyone else interested in art. As soon you can understand the fundamentals, you can do your own research and study, youtube is really great for this. I hope this helps, let’s get better at drawing together!!! Ganbarimashou (ง •̀_•́)ง
#anon#askbox#I feel there's a lot more to add but I'm tired I've been working on this sicne yesterday ^^'#Like there's more softwares and resources I could link you I know of that#So when I think of something else I may add to this psot#post#if you feel overwhelmed because this is a lot of info you can start with the beginner section of this psot#and sycra's channel

The Stardew Bachelors and why I didn't pick them - Atlantis Edition
Damn I can't believe this became a meme, I've had this written for MONTHS and saved it in my drafts.
This includes why I didn't pick them but it's also whether or not I would pick them if Harvey wasn't an option. Includes heart event spoilers.
Regular text = Stuff I wrote months ago
Blue text = Stuff I added for posting this.
Sebastian:
- This would be the closest thing I could think of to a "platonic marriage" we would be best friends who live together. Plus I could join his DnD group. - He is basically me (nerd programmer who stays inside and wears a lot of black) - I don't feel guilty about leaving him alone all day while I go get stuff done for the town, we're both introverts - I don't want kids either, yes we can raise more slimes and frogs
Overall: Sure!
- Honestly I only married him in my first save because I was 17 and didn't like any of the others. He wanted to get out of his basement so I let him come live on the farm. Harvey: - He's cute and you can't convince me otherwise - Nerd with anxiety, very relatable - Only man with a stable job, plus he's a doctor so he's smart - He builds model planes, I 3D print random objects, we'd have a lot of fun building things together. - I feel like he would respect the fact that I'm ace, I could even see him being ace as well
Overall: Yes and he is my final choice.
- I wrote this post before I started my fic, and yes I made both him and my farmer ace in the story. Did not expect to fall in love with the shy doctor man but here we are. Elliott: - I like him but we have the same hair and I'm just not attracted to people who look like me. - We're both writers, we could proof-read each others stuff and help each other come up with ideas for stories - Another friend marriage, I would support his writing career so he can go on tour with his book. - His room is a library and I want that in my house
Overall: Maybe? Maybe not.
- I honestly do like him as a character, but not to marry him, which is why I made a farmer OC for him (Zephyr) Sam: - He's sweet and plays electric guitar. - I'm really into music and could go to all his concerts - I feel bad he sort of gave up on his rocker dream to write children's songs so I don't want to be taking him away from his life to live on the farm. He wants to be in a rock band then he should get to do that.
Overall: Probably not
Shane: - Look I love a good redemption arc but I wouldn't marry this guy - I always befriend him so he can get better (and I get blue chickens) but this is just "we're better as friends" - I hate his room in the farmhouse. I'm not the most organized but yikes - Still higher than Alex because he's easy to romance
Overall: No Alex: - Very hard to romance, his liked items are so hard to get - Kinda misogynistic when you first meet him so not someone I want to talk to in the first place - I just give him eggs - Kinda forget he exists sometimes
Overall: Absolutely not

My opinions for the last three haven't changed lol

Dnd. I don't mention it much here but my dad is a huge dnd nerd when it comes to dnd and so I grew up playing it and have for years.
Ah! Another person who has had a parent's interest thrust onto them! (/lh)
My father gave me star wars and painting 3D models. Both of my parents gave me a general love for sci-fi. I only realised that I know more than the general person about star wars when my friend didn't remember what a storm trooper looked like. It made me feel very nerdy (/lh)
Anyway, my mother gave me a love for fantasy! Fantasy is great. I wanna make a comic combining fantasy and sci-fi one day but I'm not sure how I'd go about it. Maybe mechanically enhanced mermaids? Magic infused machines? Space fairies?? Space whales???
If you have any tips on story creating and plotting and monster creation, I will take anything! Sci-fi and Fantasy can go hand in hand and create some truly monstrous things and I would like to explore lots of it
-Heathen
Heathen! Hello!
Many of my father's interests have kind of just trickled down into me. I am but a sponge. He's a huge reader and so my parents always read to me as a kid and then boom now it's probably one of the most defining things about me. My dad is artistic and likes to draw, boom I am also an artist and draw things (though in a different medium). My dad likes pirates and dnd? boom I also like pirates and dnd. I don't share a lot of interests with my mother, but I did with my grandmother. Sewing and cross-stitch and latchhooking. My mother frequently says that the creative gene skipped her and went straight to me. The point being that yep!! I also have many of my parents'/family's interests that kinda just became a part of me.
Congratulations on the interests! I have watched...2?...and a half? star wars movies? I think. My best friend in middle school was really into star wars, so I watched a movie or two with her. She's actually the reason that I own two star wars shirts. I was like ah yes solidarity in the form of clothing, this is friendship. OH I also have a few 3d model type things!! They're dnd figurines, but I haven't painted any of them. We used to have this whole box of different figurines, but we never use them when we play so we gave them to a friend. Kept a few though. (also I did look up what a storm trooper looks like just to confirm. I did know what they looked like but also needing to consult the internet takes away some of my points)
I don't think it comes as a surprise to anyone that I also love fantasy!! That is...that is basically what this blog revolves around. Oo the combination of fantasy and sci-fi sounds incredible. Looked it up and the name for that melding is called science fantasy, which I personally love. If you're looking for ideas on how to do it you can find lists of suggestions online of science fantasy books to check out to give you some inspiration! Based on the covers I'm seeing on the list several of them appear to be older, but there are more recent ones you can look at.
I have many tips/observations/experiences when it comes to story creation and such!! There are a few posts I've made in the past about different writing related things, so here's the links:
How I plot out stories
Tips to write more regularly
Example of combining two things (this is the bird + dragon ask you sent me!)
Those are the ones I can remember and find off the top of my head that might be relevant to you, so hopefully those are a little helpful! I don't have any posts about monster creation rn, but I can make one of those! Anything specific about monsters you'd want my advice on?
I do a lot of writing so I've kinda figured a few things out and am more than willing to share my experiences!
oh also another thing on the dnd topic before I forget: my dad is a nerd and has a dnd podcast (which I haven't listened to yet). And because he became friends with other people who have a dnd podcast, I somehow ended up on an episode. There is, as I answer this, a dnd podcast episode of a oneshot just out in the world that I am on. I haven't listened to it, but I know it's there.
I hope you are doing well!!
#if anyone ever has any dnd questions I have access to a great resource right here at home#i haven't played in a while but!! dnd just kinda exists in my life all of the time#there are dice and figurines on my bookshelf#i can hear my dad playing with his friends as I walk post the office or as I'm falling asleep#I've got character sheets in my desk drawer#anyway I'm getting distracted#i would love to help with your sci fi fantasy if you'd like!!#just didn't wanna go too far into it in this ask because it started with something unrelated#but 100% am down to give tips#quil's queries#heathen nonsie#dnd#quil lore

The Freedom of Expression Episode 29 - The fashion brand that doesn't sell a single item of clothing.
K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru starting this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome again...Well well well...
J: Hanshin?
K: You know it aready! haha
J: I knew the moment you said 'Well well well'
T: You took a really deep breath.
K: Haha
J: Whenever you lament in that way, its probably Hanshin. Whats going on with them?
K: Well, its kinda like 'Hmm'
J: Haha
K: They are winning some and losing some.
T: Yeah.
K: I talked about this before, but after they got 20 points...
T: Ah! Yes
K: They started getting worse.
T: Yeh, yeh, its true.
J: Did they use everything they had all at once?
K: Well, I mean..But! They just can't win against the Giants.
T: Yeah.
J: Why is that?
T: They can win against other teams.
K: Yeh, its only the Giants. They get destroyed by them.
J: Haha
K: I can't say anything else.
J: Weren't they beaten three times in a row recently or something?
T: Yeah, moreover they didn't get a single point.
K: They were totally crushed three times in a row.
J: Ehh?
T: Its incredible.
J: There's nothing good to come out of this? Why did it happen?
K: They're trying too hard..whatever they do, they try too hard. They never get it right.
J: Oh, really?..Dare I ask you? Honestly? Is there any posibility for Hanshin to win again?
K: There is!
J: There is? Oh good!
K: Yeah, there is....but the Giants are pretty strong.
J: Kami, can't you do something for Hanshin?
Kami: That would be quite difficult. Three losses in a row is quite bad isn't it?
T: Yeah.
J: Its impossible for you to help? Can't you use some of your power?
Kami:......... No, I don't have any power.
J: Haha
Kami: The higher up gods do, but not the lower ones.
J: Can't you ask one of the higher up gods? You could be their mouthpiece.
Kami:.........No, the conditions are strict.
K: Ok, Joe, today's topic please.
J: Yep...Its the news about the mystery of the northern European fashion brand that doesn't sell a single item of clothing. The website 'Carlings' catering to mainly northern Europe, has launched the fashion brand 'Neo-ex'. But it seems as if you can't actually buy clothes on the site. As for how it works, users can choose fashion they like from the 'Neo-Ex' collection, then they upload a photo of themselves. After that a team of exclusive 3D designers will created realistic images of you wearing the clothes. Then the user can buy the images. For example, they could use 'Neo-Ex' in order to look cool on social media. As for the price, you don't buy the clothes, only the image, but it costs between ¥1,300 and ¥3,900. It may appear as profiteering to some, but their aim is to cast the first stone in reducing the huge amount of waste that the fashion industry produces. What do you think about this Kaoru?
K: I mean...I don't really know.
J: You don't know? haha
K: I don't know, but at the same time Im kinda like, 'Ah, I see'.
T: Well, this method was first created at the beginning of 2019. Its still a bit strange, even now, but for sure, I think its good to use with social media.
J: Mmm, I see. Isetan did something similar to this after corona started. When it got really bad with corona, no-one could go to department stores, no one went to shops, so Isetan made avatars, like in a video, and in that the avatars could go shopping, and try on clothes. They charged a fee for it. I read an interview about it, and what I found interesting was that rather than aiming this at stressed out people who love clothes, but can't go shopping, by letting people make avatars, they were trying to open up an entirely different market. Well, thats what people are saying. This project might be a bit different from that though...Well, its not about buying clothes in reality...well, their aim may be to bring attention to the waste the fashion industry produces, but it also kinda changes the way we see fashion. It doesn't matter how much you pick with this, right? You don't buy them.
T: Yeah.
K: Well, yeh.
T: If you never leave your house, and start living though an avatar, its like your life is over. I have a feeling we'll start hearing stories like that.
K: But there are loads of peope on social media who model clothes that they've bought, aren't there?
J: Yeah..So as for who this fits, its one way to express yourself on social media, right?
K: In that sense, its ok isn't it? And its cheaper than buying the actual clothes. Ah, but does the design team choose for you? Ah, you choose yourself?
J: Yeah, then they create an image of you wearing the clothes. You don't actually buy the clothes, so there is no kind of waste produced, but if you want to just show everyone how the clothes look, you can pay from ¥1,300 to about ¥4000.
T: Its expensive!
K: This would be interesting if various brands were included.
T: Well, yeh.
J: Yeh.
K: And people like us (Dir en grey) could join it, and people could wear our clothes. It might be interesting.
J: Like not actually wearing, but just creating an image?
T: Fans could try on the same outfit as Kaoru and stuff..
K: Yeah. Or you could dress up as historical figures, do cosplay. Or you could choose stuff that you've seen models or tv stars wearing. I think this is a brand at the moment, but if they made that kind of website..
J:Ah, it could be interesting, right?
K: Yeh.
J: I mean, its also good that it doesn't create any waste products.
K: There's a lot isn't there?
J: Well, yeh, if clothes don't sell...in the end, if they are part of a collection, they don't sell them off cheaply, they just cut them up and throw them away.
T: Ah, really?
J: Yeh, and there is a lot of stuff made out of cotton, so thats kinda also related to environmental damage. The economy only works if you keep making stuff and selling stuff, but if you don't sell, it becomes waste, and the earth's environment has to take on that burden. But with this website, its purely the design aspect, so there is no burden on the earth.
K: I wonder if they can do this on any type of photo..
J: What do you mean?
K: Like do you have to be standing straight, facing the camera like this, or could you be sitting down, or..?
J: Ah, your pose?
K: Yeh yeh. Its not that cool to post a photo of yourself just standing up straight. This might actually be quite difficult.
J: Yeah.
K: Was Kami going to say something just then?
Kami: Um, I can't choose clothes at all.
K: You just wear half dried out Tshirts? haha.
J: Haha, yeah. There were quite a lot of people who wanted those.
K: Really? Hahaha
J: It's weird! People saying, 'I want one of Kami's half dried out t-shirts'.
Kami: I only buy cheap clothes. Cheap clothes which won't show the dirt. But even so, my shoes are expensive.
J: Ah, shoes, yeah.
T: What type of shoes do you buy, Kami?
Kami: I buy quite nice shoes. Yes, I do. I mean, I don't really know, though, something around ¥6000.
J: Im not sure if thats cheap or expensive, haha.
K: Yeh, its kinda hard to tell.
J: Yeh, its that ambiguous zone. If it was ¥500 you could say, 'wow, thats cheap!'. But ¥6000 is like, well...'oh, ok..', kinda.
Kami: I pay ¥500 for tshirts.
T: Thats cheap.
J: Kami, do you wanna try this? Making a fashion image like this?
Kami: No way.
J: So icy...haha.
K: Don't you post photos on socia media, Kami?
T: Oh right, yeh.
Kami: Not at all. But I think doing this type of thing is a really good thing. It's like casting the first stone, it said. I like stuff like that.
J: Ahh.
Kami: I think its a good thing, but I wouldn't do it myself.
J: I kinda wanna try checking out this website. To see what its actually like.
K: Yeah, if it looks interesting...
J: Kaoru, you should try it!
K: Me?
J: Yeh.
K: This? Should I do it?
Kami: Ah, thats a good idea.
K: I could try it, and then we could talk about it on here.
J: Yeh, yeh. And I want you to post your images on Instagram to show what its like.
K: Ahh, ok, ok.
Kami: Let me pick something!
K: Eh?
T: Let Kami select the clothes.
K: Kami? Kami selecting? Im scared, haha.
J: I wonder what a guy who only wears smelly tshirts will choose?...Ok, so would it be styling by Kami?
K: Yeh, yeh, yeh.
J: I do want to see that too.
K: Well, it would be interesting.
J: So, you could wear stuff that us three choose for you.
T: It would show our personalities.
J: Let's try it. We could see which one everyone likes best, get peope to like them on Instagram. An Instagram plan.
T: Thats a good idea. But its also scary. What if they press thumbs down a lot.
J: Like, Booo?
T: Yeh.
K: Well, it doesn't matter which, we could aim for booing.
J: Well, yeh. We could even aim for that.
K: Kami will probably be aiming for that.
J: I thinks so, yeh.
Kami: I'll just follow the crowd.
J: Well, we could try it once, and show the results on here.
K: Yep. Well, lets end here for this week. Please subscribe. Thank you very much.

Ask Explo--
...you know what, you’re right. Name change effective immediately.
Askplosion #10:
(unrelated to everything by the way but I DEMAND THE ANON WHO MENTIONED “REMARRIED EMPRESS” A WHILE BACK COME FORTH AND ANSWER FOR THEIR CRIMES. IT’S SO GOOD BUT IT’S UNFINISHED AND I’M HOOKED, HOW DARE YOU)
Asks responding to previous posts:
It’s okay! I figured that was what it was but it’s been so loooong.
Ah, wow.
Um, that’s definitely not a part 2; I think that’s more like a four-parter/five-parter or something.
Sorry! No can do!
That’s totally fair!
I think the reason I so quickly agreed with it is like--
I’ve been watching the Inuyasha sequel and it’s not like I don’t think the narrative’s apparent punching bag Moroha (who is fourteen years old) shouldn’t be punished when she does something wrong/sneaky/manipulative, but they punish her as if she’s Miroku (who was eighteen years old).
Basically, I want the punishment to take the age into account, or at least only affect Marinette on a more personal level and not be “Heart Hunter” where they take totally understandable feelings of heartache (remember, it wouldn’t have mattered which miraculous she took because Hawk Moth got the Miracle Box and Fu regardless; even beyond her emotions, I feel like she chose the best option available to her considering which temps she knew the location of) and then punish her for them by memory wiping Fu and taking away all of her temps and giving Hawk Moth the grimoire translation.
Yes!! I really wanted to respond to this one, thank you! (It’s this one and then there was another one talking about Luka and Adrien, then talked to me about how I refer to Luka as “soft” but not in a bad way; I unfortunately don’t remember the whole thing.)
Ahaha, and yeah, I feel you. Anti-salters are a very strange conundrum I still haven’t figured out; like, I get not liking salt, but...
I mean, when I don’t like certain content, I just blacklist it. If I end up seeing it anyway due to cross-tagging or a lack of tagging, then I just blacklist the person themself. You won’t see me going after people for that very reason; I only see what people send/ask me if it’s content I don’t like.
I’m glad you’ve found some peace in this blog! Hopefully it continues to be that way for you in the future!
(and yay, a fellow INTJ!!)
New Asks:
There are female writers? ;P I just assumed they were all locked in a closet until the male ones were like, “okay, pretend to help us here, we need one female writer to claim girl power.”
As for Ladybug all like, “Cute, isn’t she?” I think it was rhetorical (she could also be messing with him but “Glaciator” tells us that she didn’t know he crushed on her so who knows). The writers do this thing where Marinette is all panic-y and occasionally self-conscious as herself, but then as Ladybug, she suddenly gets a bit of an ego. I think it’s meant to be there in order to make Chat Noir look less... idk, “obnoxious” when he starts boosting his own ego; trying to balance the two by giving them both big heads, so to speak.
Honestly, I feel like Adrien needs less screen time. :|
Even when he’s not on-screen, characters are usually talking about him, or you see his face in Marinette’s room/somewhere in Paris. I’m become so jaded by the guy that I don’t even think it’d matter if they remade the series and gave it a “totally good and interesting Adrien.” That’s how badly the show has made him out for me; “Adrien Agreste” the character is just... sigh, I’m so done with him.
And yeah, this whole idea about, “Marinette is [x], we need more AAAAAADRIEN!” comes off really bad, lol, especially when Adrien has very little going for him.
(this ask ends off like there should be a part 2 but there isn’t one in my inbox, so sorry if there’s meant to be something else!)
The exact lyrics according to the wiki:
My wish for a cat who's in love, with our own Ladybug. Is that he'll get what he's always wanted! She doesn't know she loves him, only sees Adrien, But Christmas miracles always happen!
Yeah, especially nowadays, those lines bothers me. Not only does it imply “true selves,” but that it’s Chat who should be getting what he always wanted and Ladybug is the one with a problem.
Like, excuse me?
Probably Stormy Weather, even in the first episode. Ladybug and Chat Noir couldn’t even touch her until they arrived on top of the TV station.
+ With all those effects and shots, it made it feel more action-y than typical episodes.
Marinette, Aurore, Luka, Anarka, Jagged...
basically any name that I haven’t really heard before (”Luka” makes me think of Vocaloid but the Luka there was female), or a name that relates a lot to the character (like “Aurore” for “aurora” since she loves weather things).
dfjbghfkdgfdgnjfdg this anon really like, “I NEED ANSWERS!!!”
It’s as if these characters hit 18 or something and just grow overnight, I swear. I’m hypothetically fine with some more variety in character height (it’s not like the show tries to be realistic, after all), but maybe don’t give us official heights if they’re gonna be this weird/inaccurate.
Especially when they change it just for the sake of a shot anyway. If you watch “Simon Says” when Ladybug and Adrien stand next to each other while looking at the picture of Adrien’s mother, the very next close-up has an obvious difference in their heights from what you just saw.
They’re 3D models!!! This shouldn’t happen!
I... honestly never thought of the “less threatening” thing! Dang!
And yeah, Marinette isn’t helpless or incompetent, but because of the Adrien crush, it makes her that way at times since she’s always falling on him and--
...ugh, actually, yeah, don’t wanna think about those implications. Hard pass.
Gross.
I’m not familiar with that one, though Astruc deletes his tweets all the time (there was one tweet where he confirmed that Luka was poor and it only exists in screenshots now because it didn’t get archived and he deleted it almost like he realized that he was pointing out the blatant classism in the show, oops).
Yeah though, I haven’t seen anything like what you’re describing. Sorry!
It’s okay! Sorry for having you clarify but him choosing and Marinette deciding to never give it back are very different things.
I don’t recall Chat Noir having much purpose in the final fight (in terms of both contributing and actual fighting; I know Cataclysm broke the object to release the akuma but was it needed?) so Marinette might either go cat-less or get a temp. Plagg could also be helpful in his own right because he’s small and blends in with the night, so he could hypothetically sneak up on the bad guy.
Afterwards, there’d need to be a new cat, but Adrien would also have to reconsider his actions and really think about what happened. I could also see Plagg going to Adrien’s house, half to apologize for giving the idea to Adrien that Adrien leave without telling Ladybug, but also half to call him out for giving up without consulting anyone. Adrien is a lot of conflicting things (see Adrien’s passivity compared to Chat Noir’s recklessness) so he’d have to find a middle ground within himself.
Marinette might carry Plagg around in her purse for a while and let Plagg have a say in who he goes to. Plagg might grieve for a bit over not having Adrien around (even if Adrien was flawed, Plagg didn’t ask for any of this so Marinette is doing her best here).
O-oh.
That’s always the rough patch with “endgame ships.” Once it’s obvious to the audience that they’re endgame, no more effort needs to be put into them.
The other thing too is how Kagami, for example, is friends with Marinette. Even once Adrimi sinks, she’ll presumably stay friends with her. Luka, meanwhile, is Juleka’s brother.
They have lives outside of their love interests. Adrien is so into Ladybug that he doesn’t have that; I mean, Nino is Adrien’s best friend like once in a blue moon.
The entire class is just watching an episode and then calling on raised hands to answer what was wrong with what they just watched.
“Everything?”
“I mean, yes, but I’m sorry, you have to be more specific to get credit.”
I think Aeon herself is fine. It’s mostly just her transformed and that transformed name that I have a problem with (she doesn’t even look uncanny so I don’t get it). I heard there was something wrong with the name “Aeon” but searching the name doesn’t give me anything I would qualify as such so I have no idea. I just wish she was given a little less “I’m programmed to--” (makes her seem less sentient) and more “[anything that doesn’t have to do with pushing the love square]” because I feel like they might’ve done the latter to make her more “likable”? I think fans of anything usually like the “matchmaker” character provided it’s for a ship they like. Also strange that they make her a robot but Max and Markov don’t extensively interact with her, but that’s a nitpick and not a criticism of her character.
...I’m rambling, my bad lol.
(Ohhh, she was supposed to be a mummy? Like, foreshadowing her “dying”?? That went right over my head but I guess that’d be where the name Uncanny Valley came from? No clue.)
Best case scenario is probably the middle or the end of Season 4.
And yeah, it really doesn’t matter to me what they do with the love square. Marinette had gone through too much suffering and the show goes out of its way to show how much stress Marinette is being put under (and also keeping Luka away during episodes like “Gamer 2.0″ even when it makes sense for them to be there, as if trying to make sure Marinette doesn’t have enough moments with him to forget Adrien).
Like, ah, yes, I totally believe that Marinette is in a position where she can make reasonable decisions about her love life while all circles of her life are on fire.
If the Sonic movie of all things can have an interracial couple, there’s no reason why this show can’t, just saying.
And, even with Marinette, she’s white-passing (according to what basically everyone says, I’m really awful about recognizing race so this isn’t my field; I wasn’t aware that Ondine was Asian, for example).
Does Nadja count? Manon’s dark-skinned (I’m still not over the fact that all the kids in this show are dark-skinned; it’s not like it’s a problem from a representation standpoint - though all the kids are also all generically bratty/whiny so there’s that - but the percentages in this show are weird) while Nadja is really light-skinned, meaning either a dark-skinned husband or Manon is adopted.
Though I guess the problem then is that we don’t know, so there’s no established couple there.
Non-Miraculous Asks:
w-who gave you the right to say such things????
Uhhhh, that might be too broad of a question, I’m sorry!
I know this isn’t satisfactory, but I will say that my favorite genre is Fantasy/Romance (it’s why I adore Red Shoes so much; by the way, an anon asked for my opinion on that a while back and I will get to it! I’d need to watch it again to get screenshots) and my least favorite is probably Tragedy/Horror.
I don’t think I’ve watched enough to really be able to say? I’ve kind of been all over but I’ve never fully gone through any of them outside of Miraculous. I’ve seen bits of Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Star VS the Forces of Evil (don’t know if that counts), and I meant to watch Yuki Yuna is a Hero but never got around to it. I saw the entirety of Puella Magi Madoka Magica but you guys know how I feel about that one.
Maybe Cardcaptor Sakura by default then? It was definitely not perfect but I liked some of the character dynamics (I also have a clipcut of it - basically where I go through a series/movie and cut out parts I don’t like so it’s only good stuff - so I’m cheating a little) and the male love interest was a tsundere type that I actually ended up liking, which is really rare.
!!! That sounds sweet~ I know Sailor Moon is popular so I’ll definitely take your word for it on that one.
I would also accept a “reincarnated”/”destined lovers” trope if maybe the ship themselves are the one who set it up in the first place. I have a Lukanette AU, for example, where they basically got together and then prayed to the shrine of the renewal god that they’d “always be together,” which ended up allowing them to reincarnate over and over (as if they set up their own soulmate AU ;P) and continuously find each other.
Though I guess that’s not technically a “meant to be trope,” but still, it’s a form of it but where it was totally consensual on both sides.
Also, I finally thought of a show that ended with the ship I wanted: Gargoyles. I didn’t see the entire series, mind you, but I saw most of it and Goliath and Elisa were just... quality, I adored them.
+ With Beauty and the Beast being my favorite Disney movie, they fit right in with my tastes.
I forget that AangToph (I think the “official” name for the ship is Taang, but don’t quote me on that) exists sometimes, maybe because I’ve never shipped Aang with anyone; I’ve got no problems with the ship though.
Ugh, and this is what I mean when I talk about people who set up these reasons behind people shipping something based on what they saw a few people do. It’s like, “you only ship Adrimi/Lukanette to spite Adrienette!!”
Meanwhile, me having shipped all three at one point and then dropped off the love square.
Also, me shipping Zutara has nothing to do with it being dark/edgy because I’ve never seen it that way (intriguing, sure but dark and edgy? lol) and also avoid dark/edgy ships like the plague.
I still laugh at people who are like, “you can’t ship it because it’s not endgaaaaame!” as if shows can dictate how and why I enjoy something. Like sure, if you want to let a show/movie spoonfeed you how you’re supposed to feel, then by all means, go ahead.
I suppose people may be theoretically happier that way, but it doesn’t make for an analytic mind.
I legitimately thought that “AssClass” must’ve been the actual name for something until it registered with me what it actually meant.
And eh, I guess it depends on the comparison and how accurate the comparison actually is? Like, comparing Puella Magic Madoka Magica to Miraculous... they’re not really close at all, but comparing... idk, Bunnyx to Homura or the concept behind “backfiring wishes”... maybe?
-
(note that the rest of this post is more Puella Magi Madoka Magica salt so you can stop reading here if you’re not interested in that; I’m not sure if this is all the same anon but I don’t mind letting people vent so I let them go off~)
why can’t we just have nice things
I agree, and I give a little eyeroll every time it’s like, “oh, this person had [miraculous]”
+ even just in general, I feel weird about any show that mentions/implies that real world famous people are [x] or [y] in their show. It breaks my immersion; real world locations are one thing but when it’s specific people (unless they’re made up characters like Santa Claus) or games just--break me.
I also don’t know what to think when there aren’t magical boys but you have these magical girls in this frilly outfits/skirts. The demographic is girls so I presume the reason must be like, “you can look pretty and still beat people up” (;P) but having so many magical girl shows without a hint of a magical boy makes me suspicious that it’s for fanservice. Sailor Moon has Tuxedo Mask but I also don’t know what that guy did outside of the meme of him doing nothing so I’ve got no clue.
(edit: I should correct myself that I’m not talking about Sailor Moon specifically; I don’t know magical girls that well, though I do know there are ones clearly intended for fanservice (you could say that for anything, to be fair, but still). It’s just that I see things like super short skirts or very “questionable” shots and I’m just like, “hm”)
Hmmm, good question. I feel like there has to be a lot but I’m also the type who doesn’t watch a lot of TV lol. I’m just familiar with cliches and tropes and such.
The reason I try not to use “ism”s of any kind is mostly because it’s too broad. Like, you know how the English language only has one way of saying, “I love you,” but other languages like Spanish have multiple?
It’s like that, and sometimes I think it’s too easy to throw those words out there. A “small” (possibly completely unintentional/misunderstood) offense is sexism, and then a “large” offense is called the exact same thing. I’d rather go into why something is sexist than just call it that, y’know? The only exception I make is “classism” because I feel like that’s not as... I dunno, divisive?
Anyway, for that same reason, I can’t answer firmly that, “Madoka Magica is sexist.” I will however say that it makes me uncomfortable with how the show makes out the girls being emotional because they’re young and female and then proceeds to make their life a living hell before they’re old enough to properly answer to it (I know that’s the point but that kind of makes it worse?). It doesn’t help with how all the girls have different personalities, so it’s not like you have only “crybaby girls” who are being taken advantage of; it’s basically like... all girls.
Not helped is the fact that their soul gem not only deteriorates naturally, but it can also do so faster if the girl falls into despair, which then turns them into a monster (and I know it’s kind of like an akuma thing, but the fact that it’s only girls is... I dunno, it comes off wrong?). It seems cheap that the soul gem deteriorates no matter what so it constantly needs fed even if the girl is consistently happy.
I would probably opt for the show being centered more around Kyubey being new to this or something - like, magical girls are a new thing - and then have Kyubey being surprised because they presumed that the soul gem would deteriorate naturally since “emotions are powerful but destructive to the person having them,” but then all the girls team up and help each other work out their problems. Maybe the reason magical girls are usually alone isn’t even because of the grief seed (I think that’s what it’s called?) thing not being able to be shared, but because Kyubey intentionally separates magical girls so they can’t do what the main group is doing, but Madoka is so into the idea that, “We shouldn’t have to be alone,” and so she’s constantly pulling all the girls together, which keeps them healthy.
Maybe Homura’s backstory could be that Madoka originally was more sheepish and more afraid to put herself out there, especially since she was a magical girl (who are encouraged to go it alone), which is why their soul gems were both deteriorating; they were friends but kept more of a distance, or maybe they were a team but that’s all they were. Then Madoka gives Homura the last grief seed to save her and that’s what inspires Homura and makes her see Madoka as something more than a teammate, which is why Homura actively tries to save Madoka specifically (which then encourages Madoka to want to keep everyone together as friends).
In the case that Kyubey doesn’t separate them out of concern of fRiEnDsHiP, but for another reason altogether, and then it’s ultimately their own downfall when they allow the girls to hang out and realize that it’s doing a lot of good for them.
“cute and innocent”
That was exactly it. It’s on Kyubey’s trivia section on the Puella Magi Madoka Magica Wiki.
Before the anime's first dark plot twist aired, head writer Gen Urobuchi said on his Twitter account that the "Kyu" in Kyubey's name comes from the English word "cute". This was a lie meant to further mislead fans into thinking that Madoka Magica is an innocent happy show. In a later episode, it was revealed that "Kyubey" is, in fact, short for "incubator".
In my personal opinion, a spoiled plot can’t be “ruined” if it’s a good plot. If you told me that Kagome was trapped in the Modern era for three years and then decided to stay with Inuyasha at the end of Inuyasha, it wouldn’t/shouldn’t decrease the value when I finally see it for myself because it’s good. That’s not to say that everything should just be spoiled right out of the gate, but it’s saying that maybe your plot isn’t good if you have to rely on shock value to make it work??
I FEEL THAT “ASSIGNING IT TO THE WHOLE GENDER” THING SO BAD. It just adds to my “the girls all have varying personalities so it’s not like Kyubey’s only after emotional crybabies or anything” salt.
I have no idea about any of the stuff about the writers so I can’t confirm or deny them. I will very much agree on the target audience thing though, especially with the whole “keeping the dark plot a secret” because really? Who is this for then? Like, the first two and a half episodes are for one demographic and then the others are--???
I dunno. Me personally, I just like feel good stories. I do like some good conflict and drama (for context, Remarried Empress is basically a webtoon that gives you things to feel salty about and then makes its own salt fic as its plot, allowing for endless streams of feels and catharsis, so I’m definitely not against drama), but there are other times where I just want to feel good watching something.
I feel like the show expects the characters to be selfless/perfect and then punishes them even though it’s their writing that’s causing them to act out. I can’t really talking about “out-of-character” but sometimes it’s just obvious where “we did this because we needed a plot/conflict.”
Like, hello? We don’t need the main characters screwing up; why can’t we just have some feel good thing where they take the day for themselves (seriously, imagine a Miraculous episode where Chat Noir actually tells Ladybug to take a couple days for herself, like maybe someone else gets the earrings for a few days as a temp while Marinette gets to breathe; IMAGINE IT). Not everything needs to be high-stakes to be interesting and you need those calmer moments so that the action-packed ones feel more intense.
SAYAKA DESERVES BETTER.
I feel like the magical girl genre as a whole can be way more complex than it’s made out to be. I think people hear the word “magical girl” and think “cute girls in short skirts talk about girl problems and fight evil with the power of friendship and accessories.”
Ugh, just the mention of Rebellion makes me sigh internally.
Congrats on working on your own magical girl story! I hope it goes well for you!
I know it’s not technically a magical girl show, but there was also Totally Spies that Astruc worked on to some degree (I think there was some characters who were based on/a loose reference to the mains from that show but I don’t remember exactly).
The thing about the female characters suffering is that they could make for good lessons on positively directing one’s emotions (like Usagi from Sailor Moon, for example, maybe having a problem with taking her anger out on her friends, but learns that she can save that rage for the bad guys; “Gamer 2.0″ from Miraculous could’ve done that, honestly, by having Ladybug absolutely WRECK all of her gaming opponents in “violent” (cartoon violence obviously) fashion). It’s just a shame that it’s not taken advantage of.
Sayaka??? Selfish???????
*does not compute*
(Also, I wasn’t tired of them, don’t worry! It was a little overwhelming in my inbox but it’s me who’s allowing all the asks to flow in so the blame isn’t on you lol.)
I’m not sure where this obsession came from with, “you have to be selfless and you’re not allowed to use your powers for yourself.” It’s like the world’s going to end if a character leaves to go Self-Care or something. I think what happened is that shows got this idea that promoting only the giving of others is great and it’s not important to take time for yourself (even with “Gamer 2.0,” it was still Marinette playing games with everyone else, and they treated her dedication and seriousness like a bad thing when she literally did not have time to waste and they didn’t give a reason why it was good for her to take a break, only that she should).
This usually leads to the “demonization” of characters who sport a lot of self-confidence or any sort of ego. It works on both sides; Marinette is a punching bag because of her anxiety and occasional lack of confidence, but if she had an ego as Ladybug, there are parts of the fandom who deem her “obnoxious” (i.e: “Reflekdoll”). There’s a delicate balance between “be confident” and “be humble” and it’s a tightrope act.
#((Yes! This strategy works for not losing asks.))#((In other news--))#((I gotta test out this new microphone so I wanna do a ''Voiced Askplosion'' where I record my answers instead of writing them))#((Anyone who sends me a 🎤 alongside their asks will get a voiced response next time!))#((I probably can't answer everything but you know how it is~))#(((i swear that someone is going to do it just to see if they can get me to swear when I read out their asks)))#((or... like--))#((''ok i don't actually have a question''))#((''but plz say the words 'adrien and marinette are meant to be' because i want to hear how much u struggle to say it''))#category: salt#other: non ml talk#category: ramble#character: Marinette Dupain Cheng#category: fandom#episode: Evillustrator#character: Chat Noir#character: Ladybug#character: Adrien Agreste#character: Stormy Weather#category: me myself and i#category: staff#relationship: Adrien Agreste & Marinette Dupain Cheng#character: Aeon#character: Uncanny Valley#relationship: love square#MC's Renders#render: persona

Quick first thoughts on the first ep of the Hypmic Anime. Spoilers beware (and im writing this as I watch so :p)
Otome’s speech is.... questionable from a persuasive point of view. Manga did a great job of introducing her (which you can read here) but they really cut out the more terrifying parts of her speech and how she uses force to show people that she's not to be messed with
Its cool seeing everyone in their respective environments though. thats cool. Though they could have added Sasara and Kuuko (shhh i know why they didn’t let me dream)
I love how poppy the typography is. Its amazing how the visuals just leap out at you. The OP does a great job of this. The first few seconds before the title really gives me Persona 4 OG OP vibes with the influx of information given. The rest is a clear concise and streamlined way that still gives character. Animation is sparse but still carries across a general idea of each character and shows off each character object. Rendering is really nice and pays a bit of homage to the posing artwork thats done for the MVs. They also do their division hand signals and thats cute
Love how the OP has blatant HifuDoppo and DRB matchup foreshadowing
so far I really like what theyre going for. BB is about brotherly familial bonds and they show the goods and the bads. Jiro and Saburo bickering right out the gate really cements the fact that they get along like cats and dogs but you can still see that they love each other, working together when the situation calls for it
Now the 3d models. Theyre... not great but usable if you don’t look too hard. They serve their purpose and don’t actively detract from the viewing experience.
Visual typography in the rap itself are fun and poppy but they dont.... speak to me? like theyre there yes and I appreciate them but the only ones that got me excited were from Ichiro’s rap
I take my words back the group portion was kickass and I apologize
I love how they interpret the Hypnosis Speakers though. Esp. Saburo’s organs. That was super creative and I love it! If there was one thing that I felt was missing from the franchise was a deeper exploration of the speakers but the anime puts a new and fresh spin on it! Love it, especially with their attack patterns!
If the production team ever feels inclined to, Id love to see those info sheets on Otome’s desk released. There seems to be very interesting info and stats written out about each member (like capabilities, personal status etc.) They all seem unique too so I really really really hope they release images of those sheets
OOOOOOOOKAY MTC. I have such a big biased for them so Im very torn to see what unfolds
Rio striking out on his own is interesting. Out of everyone in MTC hes the biggest team player yet here he trusts his teammates to go ahead. This either displays Rio’s willingness to trust his teammates or it becomes very OOC if the anime wants to set him up as a lone wolf like character
I love how they specify its a drug deal. It means that Jyuto surely will show up and it also shows that Samatoki knows Jyuto’s motives and willingly gives black market info that he knows aligns with Jyuto’s goal. Thats A+ detail writing there and a great establishing characteristic for both of them
OOohhhhhhhhhhhhh man Asunama-san’s voice acting is god tier his work as Samatoki is phenomenal. He pulls of Samatoki’s threatening voice so well with those almost calm words before his voice becomes loud and confrontational. Those rolling syllables in contrast to Komada-san’s almost lyrical and airy speech and Kamio-san’s strict and enunciated words is such a delight to hear. It just speaks to how amazing and great these Seiyuu’s are in order to pull of such amazing work
Im so biased but MTC has such a better rap than BB im so sorry. Just by watching Samatoki’s part, the imagery is amazing. Even the arrival of his Hypnosis Speaker was awesome and sent a shiver down my spine. using the lyrics to form blades and blood was such a great thing to do. Theres so much more variety that just him standing there and shots of his hypnosis speaker. The old fashioned vignette shots, the four panel spread, the nods to old Kurosawa era films are great and I love these small details. Even the typography looks better.
Again, the interpretations with the speakers is fresh and new. Its great and I love the different imagery and attack patterns. Each one is so unique but carries across each different style of rap.
The 3d modles aren’t any better tho lol
(Hi this is Astro who is reading over their assessment again and making a note. Yeah I’m a bit harsh on BB’s rap. I’m not going to change it since I still stand by it and this post is supposed to be a documentation of my first impressions. I think one of the reasons why I’m so harsh on BB is because of their dynamic as a trio of brothers. They Have to have a more uniform approach than the other divisions. Which in of itself isn’t a terrible thing, it just doesn’t catch my eye as much as MTC did. Thats all! I definitely don’t hate BB, they’re maybe my 3rd favorite division out of the current lineup [not including TDD era teams like Kujaku Posse, MCD, and Naughty Busters] its just that their rap was pretty meh)
Samatoki crouching like a real gangstar and the cigarette kiss killed me
sadjkhfjkasdghsadjkcsdjhsdfsjhf im dying i love these trio of dumbasses so uch oh y fod someone save me aaaaaaaa (Astro note here! yeah i died when the jyuto and samatoki’s stomach growled im weak please. Samatoki’s face is just so precious and funny I might set it as a profile pic somewhere)
But also my initial assessment of Rio possibly being characterized as a lone wolf is very much jossed and im very thankful for that. It seems that Rio was simply trusting his teammates to carry out their part of the plan while he carried out his own. I like that, it really shows how much of a team these three are and that they genuinely trust each other. He’s also comfortable enough around them to invite them to dinners after work casually and not just for special occasions.
I really love MTC guys
Oooh! we get Ramuda on his design process which is really cute. the inside of his studio is super cute and retro and i love it. the poppy old music you would hear in a cafe or 90′s resturaunt is also really cute (astro note: yeah i know that in ARB you see the interior of Ramuda’s office but its kinda different seeing it animated)
the translation i have has gentaro speaking in early modern english (Shakespearian english for those who aren’t english nerds like me) but from what I can hear, he doesn’t speak in a particularly old fashioned way? Its more formal than old? and hes speaking without any of his character persona lying thing that he likes to do (as he refers to himself as “Shousei” throughout the segment where hes in Ramuda’s office which is kind of his default pronoun of choice). so its kinda odd for the translation to go in that direction but im not complaining
Gendice banter is gold but it feels... flat? a little? it doesn’t have the same impact as in the drama cds or in the manga? i feel? Also Ramuda using gratuitous english is??? idk how to feel about that
kjshf thats against the rules Ramuda omgggg,,,,,,,, (astro note again: while watching i was under the assumption that using your hypmic for monetary gain such a as buskering [which is what FP is doing] is against the rules. May not be the case but whatever)
FP’s rap might be my favorite in terms of tune and lyrics though. It’s a nice laid back bop and really gives of chill vibes. the integration of 3d and 2d is really nice and i love how they play off each other in the rap. The wordplay is so fun with little nods here and there and the beat is poppy too so it really energizes me.
Ramuda’s rap concerns me slightly since he makes very subtle and small nods towards his past (being created in a laboratory, warfare, and his overall very unpleasant life experiences) but spins it into something cutesy. It could be a coping mechanism, it could be me overthinking it. But it does make me worry a bit. Gentaro and Dice’s rap really play off each other with Gentaro sticking to stories and Dice taking up the baton by carrying on that same imagery but putting his own spin on it.
the self awareness of how scattered they are as a team is interesting though. It doesn’t seem like something you’d speak about in a rap? but i guess since its not really a do or die situation they can afford to be looser on things like this.
Right off the bat, i don’t like how they handled Hifumi and Doppo in relation to Hifumi’s fear of women. Slug made a post once talking about this and I echo many of his sentiments. Hypmic has never been very tactful about tackling this particular issue and while I didn’t have high hopes that the anime would be any better it hurts to see Doppo take away the one thing that allows Hifumi to function within society.
Doppo’s breakdown mirrors a lot of my own mental state when I spiral though its shown a lot quicker than what happens to me oof. that hits close to home. though Jakurai’s advice is. Questionable. Its not the best advice to give to someone but we have no idea what kind of doctor Jakurai is so ill let it slide
Jakurai’s pose looks like hes going to do a mahou shoujou transformation lmao
I don’t have many thoughts about the rap though again. How they visualize the rap is interesting. the different imagery is quite interesting for each of them and the typography is nice a distinct but im still on the fence about the visuals here
The sound is in the same boat. The sound effects either drown out the rap or are too quet but some parts are nice at least. When they talk about Tokyo’s beating heart, the heartbeat sound is a but distracting especially since its only played once. But the imagery is at least nice
I wonder if for the eds they’re going to take a similar approach to what Enstars did and have a four different endings, one for each division. I love the blend of styles here and it really accentuates that although they’re different they mesh well together.
Ramuda’s silhouette though is hilarious. Love it.
:p and thats it. Uh not bad for a first episode. Established all 12 characters really nicely and their dynamics. I had some problems with it but then again nothing is perfect. I look forward to what they show us next week

Living with a Smart Gun
Marta decided she needed a gun after the boost had gone wrong.
Oh, technically, it’d gone flawlessly – 1.2B New Yen siphoned away from Bank Shanghai and into six different offshore accounts, undetected – but when she’d gone to get paid… that’s when things went sour.
She wasn’t a people person. Normally the human relations aspect of her work were handled by Konroy, but he’d fled the country temporarily and hadn’t returned her calls in weeks. She needed to eat. So she’d dug through his list of contacts, found a likely client, and reached out. The job specs they’d sent her seemed easy enough, and it was.
But upon meeting with the lovely folks behind the mail address she realized her mistake: upon delivery she had no leverage over them. The money was boosted, and they had the account numbers and passwords. To her dismay they even had the keys to her secret, 7th account, the one she’d nabbed for herself. Apparently they’d had a tech of their own shadowing her the whole time and she’d been careless.
Hunger will do that to you, she mused, as they broke her left arm, laughing. They beat her ass out into the alley behind the gaming parlor and walked away without looking back. She’d wanted to kill them all at that moment, and if only she’d had a gun…
Broken arm, at least one broken rib, and both eyes swollen shut. Missing tooth.
Konroy wouldn’t have let this happen. But he was gone. She needed to protect herself now. Laying on damp concrete among cardboard boxes and dumpsters, her left arm a shrieking, grinding agony, Marta pulled up a list of clinics from Konroy’s little black book. She selected one certified to install Personal Protection systems and left a message before passing out.
--
The black clinic was clean and bright, the black part referring only to its off-the-grid status. They never asked questions.
Marta lay in an antique dentist chair, her left arm gripped in padded waldos. It had already been peeled open, radius and ulna exposed, a soft green laser rotating as it mapped the break. She was numb from the shoulder down; a spinal block.
The nameless tech hummed as she worked, watching her arm rotate in 3D on a monitor.
“A simple break, easily repaired,” the tech nodded in satisfaction. “We’ll have you out of here in thirty minutes.”
“Question,” Marta held up her right hand. The tech swiveled to peer at her with calm eyes.
“You install PP systems here, right?”
Without reacting, the tech nodded. “Certified in all forms of PPS. Do you wish to review a catalog?”
“No. I know what I want.” Marta reeled off a make and model number from memory. She’d been researching.
The tech paused, not exhibiting surprise so much as a delay while she accessed databases. Eventually she shook her head slowly. “That model is—“
“Yes, I know. Proscribed.” Marta used her good right hand to indicate the duffel she’d brought with her into the exam room. It was stuffed with New Yen scrip, but they both knew that.
The tech accessed databases again and nodded after a moment. “Yes, that unit is in stock.”
“Well, I want one. Make it happen.”
“Your left arm?”
“Since it’s already open, sure.”
Another pause, the tech’s expression gone blank. “There is a difficulty. Your augmentations are rated at level 5. The smart gun you have requested requires level 6 or higher.” She stopped there, watching silently.
Marta nodded, closed her eyes, entered the crystal wind. Found the public certification boards where her profile lived and… adjusted them. So far as the government now knew she was level 6, certified to work on ESA/ROSCOSMOS space probes and (she noted ironically) smart surgical systems.
Her black rating, if that were something that could be calculated, she imagined as double digits. She opened her eyes and told the tech to check again.
Without discernible surprise the clinician nodded after reviewing the files. “We will need to replace your left ulna, something custom-milled.”
“I know. I’ve read the installation guide.”
The tech switched gears. “Left-handed use is not unheard of, but recommended installation is in the right arm.”
“Don’t wanna mess these up,” Marta waved her tattoos at the tech. Another nod.
“Finally, there will be a bulge. Your skeletal structure is small; the weapon, while compact is—“
“I’m fine with that. Just do it.”
--
Marta waited three days before peeling the bandages off. Her left arm was discolored from bruising but otherwise pain-free. The extra weight took her by surprise, but she quickly adjusted.
The gun’s embedded manual suggested a week of convalescence before test-firing, since the thing was still knitting itself into her arm, nano-filaments working themselves up to her shoulder for bracing. Using the weapon too soon, despite its recoilless nature, would tear things apart.
That suited her fine. She also had to figure out how to work the damned thing. And so far, its interface was… confusing.
The Crimson Storm Flower 2 (firmware revision 14c) was a typically Chinese name for something so deadly. Its gatling array could fire 1200 rounds per minute of tiny hyper-velocity pellets, or select from a wide array of flechette-slivers: everything from explosives to non-lethals. Marta wondered what use the EMP rounds would be; if her own systems were shielded well enough to even try those. She decided she didn’t know enough to risk it.
Consumables were surgically replaced whenever they ran low. Hopefully, never. She didn’t intend to switch careers or even use the thing except in emergencies.
But the gun’s UI pissed her off. In fact, she couldn’t find one. The armory stores and configuration stuff presented themselves immediately, but she couldn’t find how to actually, you know, pull the trigger.
Also, her dreams had been weird.
She’d grown used to strange dreams over the years as her meat-net whispered to the metal-net in her brain. That was something all IT workers dealt with nowadays. There were OTC medications to help with that.
But lately she’d felt like something – an animal, a presence – had been stalking her. Circling her defenses looking for a way in. There’d even been a few violent nightmares, replays of that night in the alley, where she’d aimed her left arm at the bastards who’d hurt her and instead of doing anything her left arm had fallen off. A cheap plastic doll arm, laying in a puddle. The beating had continued longer than it had in reality, until she awoke screaming on twisted sheets.
None of the Storm Flower manuals suggested how to fire it. She’d reviewed every file, even snuck out into the Chinese mil.net to search for more. The weapon simply didn’t exist except as catalog entries in various black clinics.
One anonymous forum post suggested that Flower was a military experiment. Something tried and discarded, its specs plundered by pirates and sold now on the streets. Or maybe it was a controlled experiment: let the criminals work out the kinks while the military observed from a distance.
Marta’s wounds healed, and the day came when she wanted to test-fire her new toy. She rented time at a gun range and stood, alone, in the tiny, dank bunker, left arm pointed helplessly at a paper target.
Fire. Launch. Activate.
She thought every command she could think of into the weapon’s control matrix but… nothing. She’d even looked up the Chinese equivalents and tried those. Then Spanish, Russian, and even Norwegian. Maybe the weapon’s makers had intended Flower for a specific foreign market.
But no. Nothing happened. Everything felt right – her internal net insisted everything was linked, fiber running a complete path from ulna to spine to brain.
Maybe it was defective.
With a sigh she lowered her arm and dialed the clinic’s number, leaving a message requesting a follow-up visit. These things happened, but dammit she’d paid so much and the disappointment was quickly morphing into rage. Those fuckers. They’d taken her money, smiling as they sawed her arm to pieces. She envisioned the smug clinician’s reaction when she—
Snick.
Her left arm thrummed gently like a motor applying torque to her body. The odd feeling spread up into her shoulder where—
She looked down. A tiny black multi-port muzzle protruded from her arm, completely surrounded by flesh. As if somebody had jammed a gun part directly into her skin and left it there. Marta lifted her arm carefully. It felt pinned by gyros, locked on rails, moving precisely if randomly, wherever she pointed it.
In quiet astonishment, rage gone, she watched as the sliver of black metal slid back under the surface of her arm and vanished.
Snick.
Something locked home inside the bone. The thrumming stopped.
Huh. Flower liked strong emotion, it seemed. Maybe it detected adrenaline and other stress hormones. But that seemed stupid, imprecise. There had to be a way to actually, you know, control it.
--
The Midtown clinic didn’t return her messages. She walked by the place and it was empty, a realtor’s barcode in the window. Marta quelled the impulse to stop and peer into the dim storefront but the white van parked across the street dissuaded her. The vehicle looked entirely too clean, too government for her tastes. They might as well have painted Homeland Security on its side, so she walked on by.
To keep up the appearance of normalcy she stopped at a sidewalk café two doors down and sat at a table with an umbrella, van within her field of view. She ordered unsweet tea from a waiter wearing a black apron.
When her tea came she took a sip and involuntarily grimaced. Atlanta iced tea came in two varieties: sweet and unsweet. Proper ‘sweet’ tea was made with equal parts sugar and tea; it was undrinkable, something to supercharge kids with before turning them loose in a bouncy castle.
“Excuse me,” she stood, holding the disgustingly sweet beverage out to the server. “I ordered—“
Snick.
Her arm thrummed. Without looking she knew what the server saw, why he dropped his tray and ran. It didn’t matter: she saw his leg explode in a haze of bloody shreds the microsecond Flower coughed.
One target tracked, targeted, explosive flechette selected, fired, target disabled the after-report appeared in her mind. Wow. The manuals were right: virtually no recoil. The glass of tea in her left hand hadn’t even wobbled.
Behind her she heard van doors slamming, and she turned.
Two armored Homeland troopers thundered toward her, SMGs held low. Before she processed this completely they were both down.
Two targets tracked, targeted, armor piercing selected, fired, targets disabled.
Next, the van exploded, one white door sailing over her head to clang against the restaurant’s brick facade.
Vehicle disabled, the after-log finished. She barely had time to scan the whole thing before her arm went snick and Flower shut down. She hadn’t spilled a drop of tea; she drank it all down in one long gulp.
--
Konroy’s face was a ghost swirling in pixels. His connection was so dreadful it must’ve been bounced through a dozen proxies. From the lag Marta suspected there was at least one satellite involved.
“You did what?”
His voice was razorblades slicing chipmunks. She repeated herself.
“Read me the model number again?”
He’d reacted with amusement about her buying a gun. Her, the tree-hugging hippie cybercriminal who’d once made him take a spider outside rather than kill it. After she transmitted him Flower’s specs he’d sobered up quickly.
“Honey, that’s the blackest of black tech.”
“Do we deal in any other kind?”
“What?”
“Nevermind. Look, I can’t find a clinic that’ll talk to me about it. Can you—“
“Sorry, you’re breaking up.”
“I need a clinic that does PPS. Like, immediately.”
“Honey—“
The connection washed away in a burst of static then miraculously cleared.
“Konroy? I need—“
“I’ll send you a list of the ones I know. But you already have that, I reckon.”
She nodded, wondering if he could see her. “Surely there’s more?”
“Not exactly a growth industry, especially since the crackdown. If I knew you were gonna—“
The connection broke then, went totally blue. Returned full-screen with Homeland Security’s eagle-clutching-wires logo, which she glimpsed only for a second before slapping the call closed.
Seconds later the phone was in pieces, its battery tossed down a sewer grate, the rest of it in various bushes and dumpsters as she walked. In annoyance she realized Flower had popped open and closed without her noticing… that told her how upset she was more than anything else.
--
Her dreams became violent. She was a gun, and the world was a rich tapestry of target reticules. Most were green (friendly) but some were not (red) and every time a red one was targeted and destroyed she orgasmed.
After these dreams she woke up exhausted, panties askew, the mattress damp.
While she and Konroy had had plenty of sex, they’d never had orgasms together.
--
One sleepless night Marta got drunk on tequila and walked up to the first white van she saw, stood outside it with arms outstretched. After a few moments the doors slid open and she was surrounded by Homeland troopers. She tried to warn them about Flower but they were all dead before she opened her mouth.
Then of course, the van exploded.
--
Marta boosted enough capital to hire an ex-military surgeon from mainland China. She met with him in a hotel room near the airport, where he examined her arm, scanning Flower with instruments he assembled from a pair of aluminum briefcases.
“I do not recognize this weapon,” he announced finally. “But that does not mean we did not make it. Much goes on, in the, you know…”
“I know,” she sighed. “Can you get it out of me?”
He sat back, pondering. “Eventually it will run out of consumables.”
“So I gathered. But I don’t want to wait that long, it’ll take months. Until then I’m afraid to go outside.”
“You do not understand,” he blew out his cheeks. “The weapon, it has bonded with your endocrine system. You and it are one. When it runs out of ammunition it will want more. A gun without bullets is useless, and it wants to be useful.”
“Yeah, so? I’ll just ignore it. If it pops out no big deal. I’ll wear long sleeves forever.”
“I have not explained well. The gun, it will… need more ammunition. Consider it a form of addiction.”
Her stomach dropped. “Addiction? Like heroin?”
The Chinese doctor beamed at her. “Yes! Precisely so. In fact glutamate and dopamine are the—“
She found herself standing, head pounding, shouting. “Get this thing out of me, now! I don’t want—“
Snick
--
Marta eventually found a clinic in Taiwan that could service the gun. She didn’t miss Atlanta, and everyone around her spoke English anyway. Homeland Security never bother her anymore, not over here.
A network of Flower owners had sprung up around the planet about the time she’d gotten her implant. She discovered her experience was not uncommon, and within this new, strange family she found a place: boosting cash for the collective, so ammunition was never a problem.
Meditation and medication helped control incidents. The collective cheerfully displayed an old-style “44 Days Since Last Accident” cardboard sign in the main dining room with detachable numbers that incremented – or zeroed – over time.
Soon she and the others like her boosted enough capital to purchase a small island off the coast of Taiwan, and moved the clinic there. They began manufacturing Flowers and even improving the design. Children were born and fitted with their own guns as soon as their bones stopped growing, usually in their late teens.
The Chinese project responsible for the creation of the weapon had contacted them a few times, threatened a few times, finally backed off when they were invited to come get their guns back if they could. They tried once, and the score was 27 dead Chinese commandos to zero collective members.
It was just prior to that engagement that Marta had her second, right-arm Flower installed, damn the tattoos.
Fifteen years after that, Marta returned to Atlanta.
--
Amazingly, the gaming bar where she’d received her beat-down still existed. She entered the place through the alley door they’d dragged her through, walked past uncaring workers in the kitchen and into the smoke-filled main room.
She recognized none of the faces, did not expect to. Wasn’t even sure if this place still hosted the gang who’d hired her forty years ago, or if they even existed. She hadn’t bothered to check.
Marta stood in the center of swirling chaos, of pinging slot machines, of laughing gamers, of pounding late 20th century dubstep, commandeered the PA system via the crystal wind and pitched her voice to be heard over all. Everything crashed to a halt.
“Somebody piss me off. I dare you.”
Many eyes were on her when Marta raised her arms, letting loose black sleeves fall. She stood like that, arms upheld as goal posts, eyes closed.
It took a few moments, but eventually she got her wish.

haha ^^
To all the curious ladies and gents out here, you may call me Imp.
Short, sweet and straight to the point. ;)
I am a lady in her twenties, with a strong penchant for roleplaying, writing, and drawing. The Holy Trinity if you will. I am a huge nerd and aesthetic lover boy - plain and simple. One of my main passions being video-games, illustrations, comics, live-action films, series and anime/cartoon shows, elements that shaped me during my years of growing up.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted my first ever ad on any website, and I was very much positively surprised by the amazing people that have reached out to me.
And since I am a greedy little mf, I wanted to fish for more partners. I’ve been roleplaying for a few years now and gradually gathered a good amount of experience throughout the years, but it’s always fun to meet and learn something new.
Name: Imp
Age: 27 years
Experience: 11 years
Preferences: 1:1 Roleplaying
Partner: Should be at least [18+], but I rather much prefer my counterpart to be 21 years or older
EMAIL: [email protected]
I am a very creative sort of individual with hundreds of ideas constantly occupying my little impish head. And I am very spontaneous too, so I can always adjust to a new setting, depending on how good and compelling the concept is.
Inspirations come from various sources and origins, be it a fandom (an already existing universe) or an original storyline. Please read through these paragraphs carefully before you decide to contact me! It’s important to avoid any misunderstanding later! And I would less likely respond to a message with the title ‘Hey, wanna rp?’, since I hadn’t had any good experiences with these said messages. Thank you.

Communication: It’s certainly chill. You can talk to me about whatever occupies your mind since I am very open and always happy to listen to others. I also tend to be chatty, sharing a meme or a joke every now and to loosen up the mood. If you consider choosing me as your roleplaying partner, be sure to maintain a certain consistency. I have nothing against going on a longer break or even a hiatus, but the whole `ghosting stick´ is something I have no patience for. So if you’re unsure of upholding a stable, long term partnership, feel free to skim past this ad.
Plotting: Also very important to note! I am fairly quick when it comes to building new characters, concepts, premises, storylines, backstories, etc… This means there is certain flexibility available which allows me to adjust. Even though it is a hobby, I am still extremely passionate about good storytelling and interesting character arcs. I hope to meet someone who is just as enthusiastic and willing to put in the same amount of effort as I am. If it’s only me who’s pulling all the weight, I will lose interest fast, just to get it out there. Aside from that, I love going a little crazy with the possibilities and push things to their absolute limits. Of course within the boundaries of the given setting.
Pairing & Romance: Okay, right off the bat, I am a hopeless romantic through and through. I enjoy good and strong chemistry between characters just as much as the next, and this will be no exception. I prefer the good ol’ MxF pairing because I have more experience with this. But I also like playing a FxF dynamic or MxM. Everyone is welcome! When it comes to pairing itself, I want to make sure our creations are compatible, for I hate forcing characters into a romantic relationship for the sake of progression. A natural flow is what I am aiming for. ;)
Mature? Yes, very much so: Adult and taboo topics are absolute. There’s no way around it because, in my stories, it is a running theme. The adult world is not easy to handle, but it’s definitely interesting to explore. That includes violence, cursing, shocking content, and all that dark stuff. My limits are few, safe for a couple of minor pet peeves that I have, I am pretty much open to some experimentation. When it comes to action-heavy scenes (be it an intimate situation between two characters or something on a cataclysmic scale), I won’t fade to black since I am not a huge fan of censoring. However, I will not force or push my partner into something they are not comfortable with. If you want to know the extent to how far I am willing to go, what sort of content or how detailed my writing will be, you can ask me directly. As for smut or lemons, whatever you call it, it will never be the focus of any of my roleplays, but I enjoy a good erotic scene with a lot of tension (if they are good).
Boundaries: Not a big fan of things like pedophilia, necrophilia, scat, bestiality, or those dreaded ‘futas’.
Inspirations and interests: There’s a pretty broad spectrum of what I deem interesting and inspirational. From fallen angels and demon/monster hunters, mages, criminal masterminds, cybernetically enhanced characters to futuristic dystopian settings, ancient kingdoms who have fallen against the test of time. All of it causes my heart to skip a beat. For original content, I’ll just give a brief list of bullet points of the general themes that fall in line with my current interests.
Writing: My texts are lengthy, detailed, and elaborate. Third-person is usually my preferred way of playing my character unless there’s a special case where an exception can be made. Word count usually fluctuates, though I have a standard form of 400-500+ words per response. It also highly depends on the given situation. I don’t want to set anything in stone… just to give you a basic idea of what you’re in for. I also expect my partner to have an at least adequate, if not decent grasp on basic grammar and punctuation.
Doubling: Yes, absolutely! If you are prone to doubling, chances are I might accept you as my partner straight away! Although I have nothing against the simple form of roleplaying, doubling is something I’ve done since my first time joining.
Characters: Very character-driven with the main focus being on interaction. I take my time writing characters and love nothing more than well-structured sheets that illustrate the vision of their creator. (But!) There’s no need to write 10-20 pages worth of character information, but I wouldn’t want to limit you either. As for the depiction of the given character, I won’t be as presumptuous as to tell you what sort of medium you can and cannot use. Face claims such as photos of real models, illustrations, 3D models, drawings or descriptions are all okay. As long as it gets its point across, I am happy.
Aversions: A few minor things that irritate me, or let’s say, aren’t really my style are one-liners, low effort responses and out of character behaviors in canon characters. We all have different takes on characters, which is totally fine by me since I basically do the same. Though if the character acts and behaves unlike their personality dictates, it will break the immersion. I hope to stay true to my own words when saying this. If it happens on my side, just let me know! Another pet peeve of mine is that one plot that has been done time and time again…. and I’ve grown quite jaded towards it, which is ‘supernaturals trying to fit into human society’ thing… I mean, I’m not opposed to borrowing from this idea, but for me, it grew old pretty fast. Speaking from experience.
Passione: My wish is to find a partner whom I can have a good time with and develop some chemistry. After all it is a fun hobby. We both should have fun with what we’re writing. Brainstorming among other things is one of my favorite things to do. To see how things unfold and how the characters react to the given situation is the highlight of any story.

FANDOM:
I love roleplaying fandoms just as much as I have a blast with building something original universes. Worldbuilding is my preferred cup of tea… but if we opt for something more fandom inspired, I highly welcome in on expanding on the given universe and add some original lore too!
Hellsing: Haven’t done that one before and I am curious as to how things play out, especially in such a dark and mystifying universe like Hellsing. There’s a lot of subject matter that we can delve into, plus I am a big fan of powerful vampire characters!
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: I would love you for this. No, seriously, I would. This fandom has sucked me into a downward spiral and there’s no possible chance of escaping this inescapable void. The absolute insanity of this franchise had me hooked from the second I laid eyes on it and I would be forever ecstatic if you’d message me on behalf of roleplaying Jojo. I have plenty of ideas for this one, just you wait.
Full Metal Alchemist: One of my favorite mangas and animes ever made. Recently I’ve begun rewatching FMA Brotherhood and felt a small hint of nostalgia swelling inside my blackened heart. I’d be open to play it, though it is not one of my top cravings at the moment.
Justice League / Young Justice / Justice League Dark: Huge DC fan, though I much prefer the animations and comics over the live-action cinematic. Let’s just say, I like the expansive and dynamic set of possibilities and deep, well-written cast. For instance Hellblazer Constantine or Raven.
Bayonetta: Need I say more? Let’s dance boys!
APH Hetalia: That includes the 2P version ;)
The Boys: Well.. the 2nd season came out. And I am simply stoked.

ORIGINAL:
Supernatural: From angels to demons, from gods to monsters, I’ve seen it all and I absolutely love it. There can be any sort of creature or being involved, ranging from vampires to sirens to elves, you have it. However, I’ve never done something quite relating to angelic beings and their offspring before. I’ve read up on Nephilim and angels and found it rather fascinating, and it’s a different approach from the usual vampire vs werewolf cliche.
Crime and intrigue: I never stray too far from the supernatural path, but hell, there’s nothing better than some good old gritty mafia inspired stories with a complex cast of characters and a solid storyline.
Sci-fi and urban fantasy: So this could be basically anything from genetically engineered superhuman (superheroes / - villains) with a dark take on the human psyche, dismantling the idea of heroism and villainy. Or a world where mankind began their interstellar journey to colonize neighboring planets, galaxies before transcending their own humanity by merging themselves with deadly technology. I have a few plans for this…
Historical and mysterious setting: So one of my favorite eras is the Victorian time period, 30s - 40s - 80s, Renaissance or Ancient times during the rise of the Egyptian / Roman / Sumerian Empire. During these times, a dark discovery was made by man, learning that they were not alone in this world. In fact, they weren’t even the supreme race that destined themselves to dominate the world, for another race of humanoids have lied dormant deep beneath the earth, slumbering through the millennia only to be re-awakened by a cataclysmic event. These ancient humanoids are gods among men, superior in every way imaginable, and they have made it their mission to reclaim their right to rule. But their nature is not what most people think it is…
The idea: I have an idea for a plot, in which I can give you if you ask for it. It is however merely a suggestion for what we could write - not a mandatory thing. If you don’t like the idea, we can always figure stuff out and keep on home-brewing till we find something we both can enjoy. There’s no need to immediately end things if the first thing doesn’t really fire you up.

NASASocial experience at JPL
This is a LONG one, so I’m gonna put it under a readmore!
This was my first ever NASA Social, so I didn’t really know what to expect when I applied, what the chances were or what other sorts of people would be there. I was surprised I even got in, because compared to some of the other people I have very few followers, but I think there’s more to it than that! As Stephanie, the head of social media at JPL, said, “You were chosen for your insatiable curiosity, and for the stories you tell”. I really appreciate that the selection process was more about being a creator of SOMETHING that you truly care about.
I’ve been to JPL several times for tours and lectures, but it’s always exciting to come up to the front..there was a really long line, I’m assuming because of the event and also traditional media that was there to interview people.
Got my badge and headed in, and said good morning to the Curiosity model! (which I wish was as detailed as the real thing..I still love her tho. I’ve just been spoiled having gone on tours and doing a lot of research on Curiosity that I was able to spot what’s missing..)
Admiring how the light hits her..er..Chemcam
I never get tired of looking at this piece, but this was the first time I actually checked out the plaque next to it, which had a helpful diagram!
An installation displaying the information from the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) and GRACE Follow-on missions, which in the words of my friend Sirina, shows us how screwed we are, in a beautiful way! I also realized the reason the screens are this shape is because the spacecraft are shaped like that...!
JPL’s inspiring slogan in a beautiful geometric typeface B)
We got to the meeting/conference room, with portraits of all JPL’s past and present directors around. The last seat at the front table appeared to be taken by the Mars 2020 wheel, so I asked if I could sit there with the wheel, and my day was made! I have to admit this may have been the highlight of my day. One of the first JPL-specific drawings I did was a study of an image Curiosity had taken of her own wheels on Mars, and after that I read a lot about how the wheels worked and how the design was less than ideal..it makes me happy to see the next iteration and how it’ll work out!
No pointy grousers for the sharp Mars rocks to snag on here!!! Just this...veeeeery shallow S-curve.
Everyone hanging out and social media-ing before the event began, waiting for more people to get there. I happened to sit next to a couple people I had pre-stalked on Twitter from the list they made of participants!
LOSING MY MIND EVEN MORE THAT WE COULD TOUCH AND PICK UP THE WHEEL???!?!!? It was pretty light, since it was a 3D model and not made of actual aluminum.
Lookin cute together. This is Kevin Baird, an awesome photographer! The only patches we had in common were the NASA meatball (not even the same one, though) and the SOFIA patch, which was strangely almost in the same spot on both of our jackets.. (on the back left side)
Then Stephanie, JPL’s social media head, came and proposed to us with space grade aerogel, and of course we all said yes.
After an introduction, Linda, another social media expert at JPL, brought over a top secret looking box, which she explained will have some cool graphics relating to Mars 2020 on the front and inside soon (excited to see that!!)
Inside were material samples of several components of Mars 2020, including the many layered thermal blanket, the ropes that will lower the rover onto the surface of Mars (which can hold the weight of 1 car EACH, and the rover will be suspended by 80 of them) as well as the parachute material (orange), which was remade for better strength and lightness.
We also got to hold a replica of the sample cache tubes that Mars 2020 will be filling!
At 10:00, the event we were there for, the State of NASA, came on (a budget rollout explaining briefly how much money the government will be giving to NASA in 2021 and what it’s for) so we watched Jim Bridenstein in front of some incredible engines...
And I just..get excited when I see the rover on the screen ok..
There was a super cool internal view of how the Mars 2020 will be depositing sample caches! The video is below:
youtube
Anyway, the budget rollout declared 22 billion to NASA and 3.3 billion of that to the development of the human landing system, which will go toward landing humans and science on the moon for the Artemis program. You can read more here about this.
After that, Director Watkins and Dr Zurbuchen came to answer questions, and we learned a bit about Mars Sample Return, and the mission that will come before that but after Mars 2020, which will map icy areas in Mars’ poles. (Really looking forward to learning more about that!!) I gave Dr Zurbuchen some stickers I made and he gave me his card......!
Soon after, we headed to the Science building, to learn about MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment) (I’ve noticed, the bigger the budget on these missions, the more effort they put into making the acronyms for everything sound cool) This technology demonstration is on Mars 2020 to prepare for larger scale carbon dioxide to oxygen conversion from Mars’ atmosphere for human use. This size of MOXIE creates only about enough oxygen to keep a small dog alive. Still impressive!!!
Wandered around the MOXIE lab a little and took a peek at the rest of what was on the walls and tables..
After that, we went to the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, where Mars 2020 was not, but that’s a good thing! I’m actually not sure which part is in the box there.. but soon after we left, it left too!
Teeny tiny Mars 2020 model hidden at the end of the viewing area...
Best.
At the indoor mars yard, a couple InSight engineers talked to us about how they use this area to test software before they send it to Mars. Here from left to right are the engineering models for Mars2020, InSight, and Curiosity.
Her name is Maggie!
One of my goals in life is to be able to stand in front of the arm and draw it until I understand what the hell is going on.
Also going to insert some pics I took last week because I was lucky enough to get a tour from my friend Sirina, where there were engineers inside working on the arm:
Next, we headed to the Mars Sample Return testbed!
It makes me excited to be in the rooms with dirt regolith inside.. also SmalBoSSE is the best acronym I’ve seen all day...
The “volleyball” that Mars 2020′s sample caches will eventually be stored in, to be fetched by another rover, launched into orbit around Mars and picked up to be sent back to Earth!
More freaking out about rover wheels. This is a prototype of one that will be on the rover to pick up the samples; the wire is slightly deformable which is great for offroad Mars action.
The rover will be a joint effort between NASA and ESA.
I love seeing these posters with hints of other projects going on. So cool!!
Last stop (cry) was Mission Control, aka The Center of the Universe, where all the data the Deep Space Network gets from spacecraft comes in.
The view from inside from my previous tour!
*eyes emoji when I see Mars 2020*
The darkroom and Curiosity’s Ace’s desk, where they send commands to Curiosity at 10:30AM Mars time.
Spitzer’s end of mission from Monday (top) vs the day after it was decommissioned (bottom).
Center of the Universe!!!
Ouagh don’t step on it! Well you can..
It was sad to say goodbye to our excellent guides, but we’ll be keeping in touch!! ;)
I also got a bunch of awesome pictures taken of me, which I was surprised by, because usually I’m the last one people take pics of..!
My jacket, which they posted on JPL’s instagram... gosh!!!!!!
And some stickers/new business card design (did I post this here yet??) I gave to everyone I met!
Displayed at Shannon Forrey’s desk!
This was a truly amazing experience, my first time attending one of these events, I learned so much and had such a great time surrounded by inspiring and talented people. Thank you again to everyone at JPL who made it possible and to all the scientists and engineers who took the time to share their work with us! I’ll never forget this day.
Also, I want to make some art based off what I learned, so keep an eye out for that in the upcoming weeks!

Some Retrospective Thoughts on Gen 7
Galar’s making me go nuts. You already know. Let’s look back on Alola because why not. I feel like I have stuff to say about it. Also, I just watched the last episode of the Alolan Anime, so there’s that.
Whenever I first think back to Gen 7, I think “Eh, it was alright. Nothing special, I guess.” The Pokemon were decent, apart from being almost universally slow, apart from like 3 speed demons, the starters weren’t much, the story was alright, the location was alright, etc. etc.
Then, I ACTUALLY think back, and I realize… I have no idea why I was thinking that. This generation was actually amazing.
First of all, they finally put the motif of the Sun and Moon into game types. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air after they tried to use the fucking dimensions in 3D space for titles in Gen 6 (Loved that gen too, but seriously “Life” and “Death” would both be more fitting and not as strange. Maybe they don’t want “Death” as a title tho). Really fits in with how naturally themed everything is too, which is obviously for the best, since this is the most “natural” game to date. Even though we technically already had an America-based region in Unova, Hawai’i is so unique in its own right it definitely fits for a region. I’m usually the type who doesn’t like super overt themes in things, and kind of just wants a very generalized experience, but it’s probably for the good of everyone that they don’t actually follow through with that idea.
Probably the biggest thing to come out of this generation is the new habit of them posting short little videos on Youtube revealing new Pokemon/features/etc. Obviously they were super trigger happy with them then, but now it seems they’ve taken a step back a little. I do love this idea, though, because it actually hypes me up more than anything else ever could. I remember before, even though I was kinda-sorta trying to follow the updates on Gens 4-6, I never really felt like I could, and even though I was going to get the games no matter what, now I realize I really want to know what I’m getting into.
I remember exactly where I was for some of the major announcements. For the starters, I was in my high school geometry class, where I watched and re-watched that video dozens of times just so I could keep looking at them. I started off on Rowlet’s side of course, but once I realized he was getting all the attention and ol Popplio was getting basically none, I changed my allegiance and stayed there to this day. Ignoring the fact that I don’t really like any of the final evolutions enough to actually use them in game, I LOVE Popplio himself. It’s seriously a shame that he didn’t become some clown seal like everyone was speculating. Unlike how it seems, I really, really like “normal” clown characters (as in, not “horror” clowns), so he could’ve easily become one of my favorites in that case. Decidueye is definitely my favorite of the final forms, and Incineroar I think is still underrated. Sure, whatever, he’s bipedal, and it’s weirder than it otherwise would be, but for some reason I love how his mouth was an actual modeled mouth and not just an image slapped on there like most Pokemon. It really made him more expressive than the average Pokemon. Plus, the animation for Darkest Lariat is really cool, with his hands flashing against a flat back background for a second before actually doing the move. Even better, it’s great meme potential when hacked onto other Pokemon, like Wailord.
I don’t remember if Solgaleo and Lunala were introduced in that first trailer too, but either way I love both of them. I was a bit more drawn to Solgaleo at first, but Lunala has since grown to be one of my favorite legendaries of all. The starry wings, golden rims, and white skeleton-y body are such a great combo. And yeah, sure, Solgaleo would’ve been more fitting as a fire type or whatever, but since stars form the heavy metals that make it onto planets it’s fine. I won’t accept that Lunala should’ve been a dark type, though. The Moon is a major embodiment of light in the night sky, so if anything it shouldn’t be related to darkness. As for Necrozma, I love his base form a lot. It’s such a strange look, especially how the back of his head is transparent. It’s the perfect “evil prism” pokemon. I really just wish Ultra Necrozma had more detail to him, though. He looks so flat for such a major figure in the games… At least he had a good battle and an even BETTER theme song, hot damn
Guess that’s a good transition to talk about the music, and I guess tangentially about Team Skull, since they were probably the best possible departure from the usual “Evil Team” formula. Them just being random hooligans causing trouble instead of a formal organization trying for world domination is a good change of pace, as pretty much everyone agrees… It wouldn’t have been so great if they didn’t at least try to incorporate rap/trap music into their themes. They’re probably the most music-oriented Team canonically speaking, so they’d have to have a great theme. Also, the idea that they feel left behind by the traditions of the Trials really makes sense, since something so important in their culture would definitely make someone feel left out if they couldn’t get through it.
Other themes for the more calm situations, like Hau’oli City’s night theme, are also extremely good. I didn’t even realize how much I loved that track until I heard Insaneintherain’s cover of it. It almost sounds like something out of Steven Universe, for how pleasant it is (apart from the piano). Lillie’s theme still gives me the warm fuzzies every time I hear it, too. I don’t think a single game before this has ever done the credits so well, too. Apart from the fun artwork, the last shot of Lillie and the game’s legendary actually just kills me every time. She’s such an adorable, pure soul, it’s crazy to think that when she was first revealed, we thought she was the secret supervillain of the game, just because she looked kinda peeved in her official art. We weren’t far off, though, with the Aether Foundation and all. I love both the calm theme of the Paradise itself AND their evil battle theme. Even though one is obviously an evil theme, it does feel like it came from the same source. Same goes for Lusamine’s theme. I really love the Aether Foundation as a whole too, where we can now have “Good” Foundation archetypes to counter the Evil Team archetype. Plus, their designs all involve white with gold accents, which is basically my brand. I tried to design my own Aether outfit the instant I saw them, since I love their look so much.
As for battle themes, I love how jazzy Galdion’s battle theme ended up. It made him so much more interesting than just a generic edgelord. The Elite Four’s battle theme might actually be the scariest theme to date for some reason, and yet all I can picture when listening to it is Acerola bobbing joyfully back and forth… Basically the same way, the Tapu battle theme is also pretty crazy, with tribal chants in the back of it. The Tapus are probably the coolest group of legendaries in the game, considering how unique they are, with their oddly wooden shells that represent animals. It really makes them feel like spirits brought about by the people of Alola themselves, instead of just some being that came out of nowhere. Probably the one theme that is the most nostalgic (yes, I know it was only 3 years ago, you can still feel nostalgia damnit) for me is the Kahuna battle theme. It was probably just some random comment on Youtube, but somewhere someone said that it was the perfect theme because it starts off intimidating, but quickly switches into a super fun melody, because ultimately, the Island Challenge is for fun. I just love that. I’m always looking for “Fun” stuff in pretty much everything, so I like a theme that represents that. Also, it’s just super catchy, and even expanded upon in Pokemon Masters. Let it be known that Hapu is the best Kahuna by the way. She cute. Also, watching her become the Kahuna is the best world building you could possibly muster up for this kind of setting.
Of course, I’m intentionally leaving out a certain group…
You know what I think of when I think of Hawai’i? Pearly white sand beaches… Palm trees… Fruity drinks… oh, and let’s not forget fucking interdimensional aliens.
The Ultra Beasts are the exact type of thing I’d want to insert into the Pokemon world, and that’s why I love them. They’re so weird in the best ways possible. When they were introduced in a trailer, I had the same reaction as I did with Type: Null. They put him up on the screen for a bit and was like “Haha here’s ‘Type: Null,’ okay next” like EXCUSE ME? YOU CAN’T JUST SHOW ME A POKEMON CALLED “Type: Null” AND NOT EXPLAIN WHAT’S GOING ON. Of course, that’s kind of what the games were for, but it was seriously a shock to the system to see Pokemon with code names instead of actual names. You also can’t convince me that Pheromosa wasn’t designed after Lusamine, and to a lesser extent that Xurkitree wasn’t designed after Guzma. I think it’s canon that Lusamine styled Lillie after Nihilego in her crazed state, but the uncanny likeness between those other two is pretty darn notable. I think from the first batch, Celesteela was my favorite of them all, being like a rusted copper rocket ship or something, who can even smack you with her two giant rockets. Also, Pokemon directly based on folktales are always welcome, no matter what. Meanwhile, with the Ultra games being the first sequels to introduce brand-new Pokemon, Blacephalon easily took top spot. I did say I liked clowns, didn’t I? Plus, the biggest evidence that he’s best boi is that in the anime when he appeared, he didn’t even try to attack anything. He just wanted to show off (specifically, believe it or not, by moonwalking… Whoever’s idea that was needs a raise). I also love detachable heads, which is a great idea to mix with clowns, and I guess also fireworks in this case… I just love him. I really hope that there will be future instances of Ultra Beasts, since it’s apparently super easy to just make them however the hell you want them, and since you’re not limited to a region’s natural environment. Lord knows whoever designed Buzzwole didn’t have any limitations. Exploring his, and really all of their worlds in USUM was extremely fun. It’s a damn shame Blacephalon and Stakataka (again, what a name) didn’t get the same privilege.
As for the Pokemon as a whole, like I mentioned, off the top of my head I don’t feel super crazy about many of them, even though that’s a total lie. Shiinotic appealed to my inner mushroom-character-lover so much that I basically designed a character that looked identical to him. He’s easily the best mushroom Pokemon to date, where he looks pretty cute while also being just slightly creepy enough, with those souless eyes. The concept for Araquanid is amazing, where he’s a reverse Diving Bell spider. I might’ve designed him a bit differently, but he still looks super cool. The ideas behind Oranguru and Passimian are also cool, since we haven’t delved much into intelligent ape Pokemon enough. Wishiwashi is another great concept, and probably the best fish Pokemon in my opinion because of it. Lurantis and Minior are total cuties, the latter being one of those Pokemon that isn’t always in the forefront of my mind, but the instant it is it reclaims its place as one of my all-time favorites. Golisopod and Kommo-o are two of the coolest Pokemon designs to me, the latter being my all-time favorite Pseudo-Legendary. Vikavolt looks awesome, despite being deceptively slow. Dhelmise looks weird until you realize it’s actually insanely large (like, Wailord large). Mudsdale is just an all-around good-looking horse. Oricorio also looks really cool, especially in her fiery form. Tsareena is, well… Tsareena… That’s not even including the adorable Magearna and Marshadow, who are in generational limbo… Also, I think Mimikyu might be the overall best addition to the franchise ever. No Pika-clone could ever compare.
I mean, specifically as far as a single Pokemon goes, Mimikyu is definitely the best addition to the franchise. Meanwhile, as far as concepts go, the absolutely HUGE idea of Regional Variants is the best addition. Again, I remember where I was when I heard the announcement: it was some sort of weird fantasy house, with a ton of cool details in it to make it look like a setting in some movie or something. It was awesome there, even if we were staying for only a night or so I think. Either way, the concept of different Pokemon adapting to different conditions in the region is the most perfect way to bring attention back to older Pokemon, and I’m so glad they seem to want to keep the idea for all future generations too. It’s especially fitting for Alola, since it’s a super remote island. I love how goofy Alolan Exeggutor is, especially because everyone else seems to love his goofiness too. Same sort of goes for Dugtrio, since his hair is actually based on a real thing… Marowak becoming a spiritual fire dancer is definitely the best possible iteration for him. My favorite might be the colorful Alolan Muk, though, even if Alolan Vulpix is infinitely cuter and better than fiery Vulpix in every way. I cannot be convinced otherwise.
Also, she’s a perfect fit for Lillie, so I guess I’ll use that as my transition into talking about the characters/anime. I’m just gonna be real with you. I’m not going to hold back. Alola has some of the cutest girls in the entire franchise. But first of all, let’s divert that train and instead lust after a man who is easily the hottest professor in the games yet, Kukui. What self-respecting researcher wouldn’t wear his professor-mandated lab coat without any undershirt? He needs his bulging abs as target practice for his Pokemon’s moves, people. He needs to let them breathe. Also, I was kind of enamoured with Sycamore before him, but you can’t deny the tinted skin gets to you a little. Burnet’s a lucky gal, let’s just say.
Okay, now that we’ve established that my pants don’t discriminate, we have to talk about Wicke. So now that that’s covered, can I just say I love Mina? I’d say she deserves more attention, but she was the only Alolan to make it into Lets Go for some reason, so I guess she’s well off? First of all, I love hippie-esque girls (idealized hippies, at least), so that’s a major plus… I mean, I should probably stop using the word “cute” altogether because it applies to every girl in the game, but yeah. Lana’s highly deserved spotlight in the anime made me love her too, where she was a perfect combination of extroverted while still more soft-spoken. I don’t know if that kind of characters’ an anime trope, but lord knows it’s not in western media, so I love how unique her personality is. Her interacting with Mallow and Lillie in cute, girly ways felt so wholesome. If the anime’s anything, it’s wholesome.
One sec, though. I have to mention that I really like Hau. He’s obviously the one pinned as “Boo, he’s not a giga-asshole! That means he’s bad!” because I guess the fandom’s hive mind has collectively agreed that the only good rivals are assholes now. Like I said before, this stuff’s more about fun now. Hau’s a fun friend to fight, to the point where you beat him as the Champion you kinda feel bad for knocking him down so much. You feel bad because you like him, you know. Also, I forgot to mention this earlier but even though he isn’t entirely difficult himself, the trials in these games are actually both a difficult and interesting challenge. A 2v1 where you’re at the disadvantage is a great boss battle idea, especially with the strategies set out by a Pokemon’s different abilities and moves. Probably the best was Totem Lurantis, who of course summoned a Sunny Day-based Castform to activate her Chlorophyll and buff her Solar Blade, while adding a diverse fire type into play. It was really difficult, to be honest. Those who say it wasn’t either got lucky or have insane standards that cannot be met because they’re Pokemon Veterans who know every little thing about everything. I’m pretty much in that camp, and I still had to actually plan during the fight. Same goes for Totem Araquanid in USUM. I literally had to poison (not toxic, base poison) stall that guy because I couldn’t do anything to him otherwise. He was pretty much one-shotting everything I sent out, anyway, so I had to stall however I could. You can’t argue that that means it was “easy” because I knew how to beat him. It’s only “easy” if you can just send out pretty much whatever and do whatever and still win. Then there’s the Rainbow Rocket episode in USUM, which is just crazy… There’s not much to say that isn’t obvious there. It was fun seeing the villains that were victorious in a different dimension.
Anyways, for the anime, I also have a similar stance. It really seemed like the only people who started off hating it were anime nerds who had no concept of an in-between frame. I will say that it was a step down from XY/XYZ though, but those seasons’ quality was unusually high. Compared to the animation quality of every other season, it was so much better. First of all, I really don’t even like “anime style” that much, so a slightly more western style was very welcome. Like pretty much every show ever, the animation quality is seriously high where it counts, so there’s not much to be said about that, but I’d say the overall animation quality is a step up in general. The more simplified style only really looked weird in Ash because we’re so used to his more pointy style. Every other character looked totally fine, in my opinion.
As for the story, I will say I would’ve wanted the scope of the plot to be much larger, like how with the other seasons Ash was going on an adventure, whereas here it was very contained, and centered around the Pokemon School. But, still, like I mentioned, I did enjoy the casual wholesomeness of it all. Not only do I just like mindless fun, but it made the crazy shit feel even crazier. The episode where Faba was trying to catch Nebby is a perfect example. It begins with a nice fun game of all the Pokemon and people jumping rope and having a good time, with some slapstick humor with Faba failing to capture Nebby. Then he does, and shit goes down. First of all, he’s torturing the little thing. Then, ASH (not his Pokemon, Ash himself) tackles Faba. Tell me, what other season had humans fighting other humans? I honestly can’t think of a single time when fighting was done with fists and not Pokemon (although surely I’m forgetting something, there’s gotta be at least one other example, right?) Then, Lillie re-experiences her past trauma of almost being abducted by Nihilego, except now her mom gets abducted in her place… Like, what happened? It was so cute a second ago. That’s always the selling point for any cartoon, for me. Stay casual for a decent amount, then break it with some uncharacteristically high tension. The same goes for the segment where Ash goes into Guzzlord’s post apocalyptic dimension. As for mega-feels, It’s great that they made Litten/Torracat an actual character instead of just some random Pokemon, with Stoutland and whatnot. The episode where they go into Tapu Fini’s mist and Mallow meets her mother, and Torracat meets Stoutland just destroyed me. It was strategically remedied by Lillie and Gladion not seeing their father, suggesting he’s still alive. There were some really great episodes in the season, for sure.
So, yeah… Alola was a good time. Don’t deny it. Galar’s gonna be great too. No game’s ever going to be perfect, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun.

My 10 cents on the issue
So I'm going to give my thoughts on the whole Pokemon Sword and Shield drama that has been going on. Like I needed time to think about all this when it first went down and now I got some things in order to give my honest thoughts.
First before we get into what is the meat of the whole thing lets talk about the whole "graphics" thing that happened. Cause I'm seeing a LOT of comments about the graphics for the game being bad when that isn't the case at all. About everything I have seen for it has been the best graphics I have seen for a Pokemon game, better than the Let's Go games by far. And before anyone says anything... yes I know some of the trees look like shit. Funny thing is that this is what everyone is basing this bad graphic thing on, I have not seen any comment that doesn't use the tree as an example. This isn't a "hope they fix this up" kind of thing no, it's a "the whole game is bad graphics" kind of comments. It's as if one can look at Persona 5 and say the graphics are shit. And I say that because at points in P5 some areas have such bad shading that you know shadows don't work like that and one area was so graphically glitchy that I couldn't take my eyes off it. But I would never say that those bad examples made the whole game look like shit, cause that is what it feels like in this case.
Now for the drama that started it all, #BringBackNationalDex this hashtag. Everything has going good for the next Pokemon games, the Direct that happened a month or so before E3 gave us a lot and at E3 we got a demo that had some new Pokemon and new waifu material. But then came the gameplay after all that E3 goodness, where they said that... they would be cutting Pokemon from the game. If anything while Gamefreak totally mishandled their need to cut Pokemon, fans have been misusing the hashtag for ALL things Pokemon related. Like posts about Sword and Shield, fine I get that... but posts about the anime, trading card game, events for gen 7. Seeing those I see that I would not be using the hashtag for anything other than this post and that's it.
With everything that happened I think the whole cutting Pokemon brought an interesting question that I don't think many have considered, "At what point is it sound to start cutting off Pokemon?" Even if this coming gen doesn't bring too much I'm sure that when gen 9 comes around there WILL be about 1000 Pokemon in total. And for the question I brought up I think the answer is "when there is too much data to add". Unless new games are just not going to have new Pokemon there most likely come a point when there is just too many Pokemon to put in a game. Sure they can reuse models as much as they want for future games with the update to models for the game's graphical power but those still take up space and it's not like people always want to spend money on the largest thing to store more data on their system. Now some have been wondering... "Do YOU think gen 8 is the time to start cutting out Pokemon?" And to that I say... No. I mean the gen 7 games had a total 807 Pokemon on the Ultra games which could include the various forms of Pokemon that would have also had to have taken data space as well and that was on the 3DS. But here we have the Switch, a system that is way more powerful than the 3DS ever was and most likely packs more punch than the PSP and Vita handhelds but it can't handle all the Pokemon. I call bull and Gamefreak doesn't seem to have given a truly fitting answer in the wake of all this. Again they are reusing models for the game with a graphical update so I don't see the problem here. If this was to get the game out on time I believe a more fitting solution would have been to just say that they would patch the Pokemon in at some point. Like I don't think people would have minded that, after all when the X and Y games came out people had to wait for Pokemon Bank to come out to get the Pokemon they couldn't get in those games so waiting isn't a problem. And if anything while Gamefreak says they don't have plans to patch them in this is a total issue that they can change their minds for and to fix. So in the end while I do think that the upcoming games SHOULD be able to fit them all this whole thing has made me realize that there WILL come a point in time where Pokemon are going to have to be cut. It also makes me sad that Mr Iwata isn't around anymore as I think he would have found a solution to this as he did with adding Kanto in the Gold/Silver games back in gen 2. So even if this isn't something that should happen for gen 8, we have to realize and deal with the fact that Pokemon would have to be cut somewhere down the line. I can't imagine that Gamefreak did this with the purpose of getting us to make peace with this idea sooner than later, but in the end this was all mismanaged and hope they do change their minds to add a patch. Though those who spam the Dex hashtag as they are doing are giving Gamefreak less of a reason to do that.
