Also!!! I got the wonderful opportunity to make a fancy cosplay of rejuvenated Spinel! I was invited to do a group cosplay with some way more experienced, professional cosplayers with the theme of “Steven Universe but as sugar plum fairies” as our only instruction. I was the only one in the group that didn’t actually know how to properly sew, but I’m still proud of myself for rising to the challenge with the limited knowledge I had! I got to be a VERY extra Spinel and I enjoyed every second of it 😌

Some thoughts because I finished rewatching Steven Universe. I don’t really think this is a new original idea, but I’ve never seen anyone talk about it before so I thought it might be worth sharing.

By this point it’s pretty commonly known that the show offers no one conclusive way we should feel about Rose Quartz. She was a complex, flawed person who did good things and bad things over the course of her life. You can love her or hate her or be completely neutral on her and it isn’t per se wrong. Personally, I still really admire Rose for her continued effort to be better, despite her mistakes, and despite her upbringing as a Diamond.

That said, her upbringing as the littlest, and most immature Diamond meant that she began her life as an entitled, petulant child. We don’t really know anything about the Diamonds’ origins, so we don’t know their relative ages, or if they came into the world pre-programmed with an identity and purpose like other gems, so it’s hard to say whether Pink Diamond was supposed to be the way she was or not. All we know is that she was functionally the child of the family. And as the child, the other Diamonds loved her, found her at times endearing and entertaining, but also they were annoyed by her, and punished her for her spontaneity and disruptive behavior.

For other gems, undermining the Diamonds’ image of flawless authority, or getting in the way of their violent intergalactic conquest would result in proper, dictatorial punishments—being separated from loved ones, being forcefully reconditioned and repatriated, or being killed outright (or shattered in this case), among other penalties unspecified to us as the show’s audience. But for Pink, she was a Diamond. She was family. It would be a bad look for the Diamonds to disappear one of their own, or revert Pink to factory settings using a rejuvenator. And of course, they did care for her. No matter what she did, punishment would have to fall short of the unthinkable act of breaking her.

So, the Diamonds handled Pink in other ways. When she made a scene, she could be locked away in an empty tower—a very cruel, high profile form of being grounded. And when she was simply in the way, she could be placated with distractions. A Pearl—literally made to serve as her personal attendant and entertainer—isn’t enough to hold her attention? How about a gem literally made to be her best friend. Spinel. A similarly childish and cartoonish little playmate to keep her busy playing games and having a laugh so the other Diamonds can rule and forever grow their empire without their annoying kid sister to bother them.

And so, at the same time, Pink Diamond was both cruelly punished for her immature behavior, and encouraged to indulge in it. To spend her time goofing off in the garden so long as she was out of the way. A confusing upbringing to say the least. But this is exactly why Pink would eventually become the first gem to meaningfully resist the Diamond authority, to resist the idea that gems must serve and conform to their intended purpose, and to resist the idea that life is worthless or lesser without that kind of purpose. Pink’s environment drove her to change. She was the only gem that the Diamonds actively wanted to change, and the only gem that they would be unwilling to break for daring to try.

Pink was still very childish and immature when she began begging for her own colony, to the point of throwing tantrums when the other Diamonds naturally refused. To the point of carelessly breaking one of her toys—that is to say, her Pearl. That may have been a bit of a wake up call for her, or at least reason to be a bit more self-aware, and careful with her thoughts and feelings. Her replacement Pearl—the Pearl we know as the rebel Crystal Gem—never knew Pink Diamond to throw tantrums or break her things. Instead, this was the Pink Diamond who could convince the Diamonds that she could handle a colony.

This version of Pink still played with Spinel, but seemingly tried to hide her more childish nature from the other Diamonds, and, based on a scene from Steven Universe: The Movie, may have been a bit embarrassed by Spinel. As Pink was trying to be more mature and take on more responsibility, her friend who was made to forever indulge her childish nature may have become an annoyance, or even a mirror reflecting everything that Pink was ashamed of being, and trying to grow out of.

Evidently, Pink’s mission to grow into a Diamond worthy to rule her own colony was successful, and she was tasked with overseeing the colonization of Earth. Soon after, Pink’s new Pearl, eager to please her sad, bored, and lonely Diamond, indulged Pink’s desire to see her planet with her own eyes, inadvertently encouraging her to take the shape of a Quartz to safely do without getting in trouble. As the two toured the planet together, Pink began to realize the beauty of the natural life on Earth, which her colony would inevitably destroy. She began to realize a love of the Earth, and her freedom to roam its surface as Rose Quartz.

The protection of the Earth and its life became a new, self-chosen purpose for Pink. And as hard as she tried to convince the other Diamonds that her colony couldn’t and shouldn’t be completed, they still only saw her as childish, disruptive little Pink, making a scene. Of course she couldn’t handle her colony. Of course she was getting hung up on every little problem. Nothing to be done but placate her so she can at least finish what she started. 

Struggling to be heard, but determined in her cause, Pink used her new identity as Rose Quartz to publicly resist the colony’s development. If the Diamonds wouldn’t take her seriously as a fellow Diamond matriarch, they’d have to confront her as an actually punishable rebel threat. As she fought for Earth, she’d spend time as a “lesser” gem amongst other “lesser” gems, gaining new perspective on their lives and feelings. After meeting the fusion of two different gems, a common Ruby and a rare Sapphire, she would come to fight not just for the Earth, but for gems. For their freedom, for their right to self-determination, self-expression, and solidarity, even if their bodies or choices are considered “wrong.”

It’s unclear whether Pink Diamond abandoned Spinel in the garden before or after she made the choice to stage her own shattering and live as Rose Quartz. It could have happened at any point between Pink being granted a colony and Pink going through with her plan to appear shattered, so we don’t know how much she’d yet matured at the time. Maybe she’d left Spinel with the intent to come back and brag about her new colony, only to forget about her as she focused on her rebellion. Maybe she grew tired of Spinel who couldn’t understand Pink’s rebellion or take it seriously. Maybe she cared about and remembered Spinel, but only thought to go back for her once “Pink Diamond” was gone, making it impossible to do safely.

Whether or not she cared for Spinel back then, and whether or not she realistically had the chance to go back for her, Pink loved all life, and was inspired by others to grow and change. She sought to leave her old life behind and never look back, but it’s doubtful that she would not have some remorse for her treatment of Spinel in hindsight. She never would have wanted Spinel to suffer the way she did. She can’t have expected that the garden would be untouched and unchanged for around 6,000 years in her absence, and after becoming Rose Quartz full time, all she could have hoped for is that Spinel would have moved on without her in some way. And after the Diamonds launched their final attack on Earth, all Rose could do was protect those closest to her, and continue to protect her now permanent home of Earth.

Rose was no saint or beacon of maturity even after that point either. She lied about her true identity, likely to run from her past and protect herself from judgement. She’d left Bismuth bubbled for thousands of years, possibly because she couldn’t bear to face her, knowing her wish to shatter the Diamonds—herself and her family—to prevent the kind of attack that ended the war. Yet despite her shortcomings, Rose still tried to grow and be better, to make the most of the life she’d made. She bubbled corrupted gems to keep them safe and free from suffering. She took in Amethyst and welcomed her as a Crystal Gem. She fell in love with Greg and learned to appreciate humans for who they are and the lives they live. And ultimately, she chose to give her life to create a new one, able to grow up in the way she struggled to all her life.

Whatever you think of Rose, she was trying to change for the better. No matter how cruel the Diamonds were, they were the ones who pushed her to change. No matter how slow and imperfect her change, Rose’s dedication to becoming better, defying her nature as a gem and her purpose as a Diamond, is what brought Steven into the world, and by extension, what laid the groundwork for gems across the universe to be freed. Rose was complex and flawed, but she did her best to be better anyways. And that’s all any of us can really do.

Chuckling softly, she went back to what she was doing, though she was still paying attention to Spinel to not be rude. * Say...do you like it here? Sophia asked, smiling lightly. She wasn't sure how to continue this conversation, so she tried to strike a new one. Hopefully she wouldn't accidentally make things awkward, she thought.

* A...gem?...No, I've...definitely not heard or seen anyone like you before...

Her eyes followed as she pointed to her heart-shaped gem, humming a little in curiosity.

* Hmmm...oh wow! That's...impressive! Huh...

The blonde peered over at her gem curiously, before smiling over at her softly.

* You sure are interesting! I wonder how you got here...

Let's be honest... Spinel has some issues. Even after the events of the movie I imagine she still has issues with friendships or relationships of any kind. Including with you since they come so strongly.

I can see Spinel getting overwhelmed with her emotions. She's clingy and often scared of her obsession leaving her like Pink did. Which, in turn, makes her even worse as her fear drives her.

I imagine she'd be intense as her obsessive behavior would make her unstable.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

If we're going based on how she acted in the movie, very. However, after that she definitely mellows out. So once she's more reformed yet still dealing with her obsession... She'll try not to harm people too much.

No promises, unfortunately, as she can probably still snap after gaining her obsession.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

I imagine she would previously treat you somewhat cruel since she was in pain during the movie. During the movie I can see her mock you too.

Although, afterwards? By then she's determined to keep the friendship you graciously offered her. Even if it's already kinda ruined when she abducts you.

Even if she's ruined your trust... Spinel would feel she has to cater to you to keep you as hers. As I said before, she's scared of you leaving. She's been abandoned once before... She can't go through it again.

At this time she doesn't bother mocking you. She's clingy and eager for you to give an order. She isn't used to all these obsessive feelings... It may actually make her relapse after what happened with Pink.

She'll give you all the attention you could ever ask for... Just don't leave.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

Unintentionally, yes. She really does just want to impress. Although, if she reverted to how she was in the movie... then it's definitely all intentional.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

I'd say very vulnerable. At first she tries not to be in fear of being hurt... Although as her obsession continues, she ends up relenting.

Which leads to her clinging to you since you showed you care... That's really all it took.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Distraught and irritated. Spinel really doesn't want to force her obsession to pay attention to her. Unfortunately, if she rushes the bond between you, she may have to.

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

Not really, no. She may be playful and treat it like a game at times... but she'll catch you in the end. She doesn't enjoy it when you run from her.

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

Huh... Well, the entirety of the movie is pretty bad if her obsession started there. Since then you'd deal with mocking isolation as she abducts you.

In terms of if she'd hurt you? Maybe unintentionally if she snaps. Other than that... I feel you nearly dying during the first movie's events may be the worst thing if you're human.

If you're a gem, getting hit with the rejuvenator as punishment could be an option.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

Nothing too fancy, just you two being the equivalent of "best buds forever". She wants to always be by your side, even if she's hurt you before.

Just to distract herself from her past and be happy with you.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

I can definitely see her snapping and lashing out most of the time. If she feels you two have a strong bond, she may reconsider.

If not... well... her fears get to her.

Which makes her violent towards those she feels are trying to take you from her like with Pink.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

Very affectionate and overly obsessive. She becomes clingy with her obsession and overly attentive. She people pleases, essentially. Anything to keep the attention on her, a jester abandoned by her queen.

Her actions can also be seen as protective/possessive since she fears someone will be better than her and you'll leave....

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

Definitely met you through Steven one way or another. Be that through the movie or afterwards. I feel during the movie makes sense... as she'd get attached there, accidentally scar you, then try to make it up to you... one of her only friends.

She no doubt follows you around, nervous yet also eager to build a relationship with you. She doesn't care how she has to do it...

She just needs you to be hers.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Not really, no.

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

Isolation is ironic when it comes to her due to what she's gone through. She won't acknowledge the fact she's a hypocrite for doing that thought. She just...

She feels that's the only way to make you need her.

If you're a Gem she may take it a step further and 'poof' you.

Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

Nearly all of them if she's far gone enough.

Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

Moderately patient. She could go either way, honestly.

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

Eventually... But I think she'll snap and crack beforehand. She's so tired of losing the ones she loves.

Why can't you just stay with her?

Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

Yes she'd feel guilty... but she may not let you go.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

Definitely her entire experience with Pink.

A bit distraught yet does her best to comfort you. She was a jester, after all. She's meant to entertain...

So she'll be trying her hardest to get you to smile again.

Essentially reassuring her you aren't going to leave or hurt her. She's actually quite fine when she's not afraid to lose you. After that she's just clingy, not dangerous.

She's somewhat a worship yandere... She'd do anything just to have your attention. Anything.

Yes. It can either be unintentionally... or on purpose.

In the fall of 2018, I went through something not unlike what happened to Spinel. When she came along, she really, really helped me to process it. I'm sure I'd have been okay eventually regardless, but talk about speeding up the recovery process. The SU and of course the beloved herself are both so important to me.

I've never drawn her with her rejuvenator! Which is a crime. So I fixed that.

Spinel's plan in the movie seems weirdly complicated, but i can totally see her coming up with it on the fly when she figures out her options Like she goes to Pink's secret weapon stash thingy or whatever, not knowing what shes looking for but just knowing she wants something that can cause some reaaal damage. She eyes the rejuvenator (not knowing that it is outdated and not used anymore) and shes like ohoho yess Then idk she activates the injector by accident and shes just staring up at this giant thing filled with deadly bio poison to kill an entire planet that she can control by herself somehow and shes like OHOHO YESSSS

Revisiting the SVSSS Steven universe AU. I was originally going to draw this out but art blocks one hell of a bitch.

Anyways, since the OG ask I made involved Qijiu reproducing to make SY I decided that gems are created differently that how they are made in SU.

in this AU, gems would be made from rogue spiritual energy gathering inside gemstones until the gemstone was able to cultivate a physical form. Despite being created by spiritual energy though doesn't make you an automatic cultivation master therefore you'd still have to cultivate via joining a sect, learning cultivation and slowly progressing until you become a master.

How they would reproduce, well they can sexually reproduce however that tends to kill off one of the parents(SXY and TLJ for example sexually reproduced to make Binghe, however SXY ended up having to give up her gem to make Binghe)

More commonly, because cultivators can control their spiritual energies, one or more cultivators can direct their energy into a gemstone until again that gem can produce a physical form, which is how SY was created.

So for non-cultivator gems you either put your rock baby in a place with high spiritual energy and hope for the best, or die to create life.

When it comes to SJs character in this AU, when I think of his gem, I imagine it to be upside down similarly to spinel, however you can barely tell its upside down because the gem looks almost the same both ways.

I imagine that SJs abuser had access to weapons like the rejuvenator or the breaking point, especially Wu Yanzi as a way to threaten SJ into not leaving.

IN SU its explicitly shown that shattered gems can be put back together if you have all their pieces, so when it comes to canon deaths there's three ways a gem can die.

Losing their spirituals energies and losing your physical form and becoming unable to form a new one. (This would be how non-cultivators like Luo Binghes adoptive mother would die out)

being shattered into dust (This is how characters like Wu Yanzi and QJL would die out)

SXY death of reproducing sexually and giving up your gem.

Also side note, whilst researching gemstones I read somewhere that gems can transforms into other gemstones via high pressure and heat. Therefore I think a lot of cultivators after cultivating for a long time their gems would upgrade in a way which is how Luo Binghe would be born as a diamond.

its not that SXY was a diamond but she had enough spiritual energy in her gem after papapa with TLJ that Binghe was able to turn into one.

However because of SJs damaged cultivation system his gem never really upgraded and he's stuck as a pearl.

Because Spinel had to leave him behind in Chapter 2, he's taking it a bit better this time. Obviously he's still disappointed and worried for her sake, but knows that no matter what, he'd be arguing to no avail. Spinel's going by herself, and Steven's staying on the ship.

She breaks it to him easy though, reminding him that sometime in the future, they'll be fighting side by side. Because both of them know that at the moment, stealth isn't going to be in their favour. Spinel wasn't designed for stealth, and Steven isn't currently 100% mentally stable after being hit by her rejuvenator - so until they're both prepared and trained, they'll be taking it slowly.

Another round of Gem Au drawings with Jinx's gem being a charoite. Naturally she has it out for Scratch since he's a corrupted gem and doesn't care if he still has his mind/is harmless-ish.

Ok... so while I see Jinx as the Jasper of the au, she also has a scythe, with reminded me of Spinel's Gem Rejuvenator. For those not familiar with it, that weapon forces a gem to lose their memories if they get cut by it. And given all that was set up for this, I thought it'd be interesting if Molly was the one to lose her memories and revert back to 'default.' She can't remember her friends or family when she lived her life as a seemingly ordinary amber, but she's not the original Yellow Diamond either. (And yes, irony is cruel.)

WHO IS SHE?

Persephone, also known as Kore (meaning "young woman” or “maiden" in Greek), is one of the main deities from Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the goddess of the Harvest. • Birds: mainly doves, she is frequently depicted with a dove on her shoulder, and she overall shown with doves all around her.There are a couple of reasons for this. First, doves have long been symbolic of peace and tranquility, which aligns with Persephone's gentle and calming nature. Second, doves are often associated with symbols of fertility and rebirth, which aligns with Persephone's connection to the Underworld and spring.

• Water: she is associated with water for a couple of reasons. First, she is the Goddess of spring, and water is a vital factor for life and growth. Second, water is also a symbol of rebirth and renewal, as it is a fluid element that is constantly changing and transforming. This fits well with Persephone's role as an Underworld Goddess and her connection with the cycle of life and death, as death and rebirth are represented as a transformation process.

• Gold: the Underworld is associated with riches and treasures that are commonly represented in the form of gold. This connection to riches represents the fact that the Underworld was a place of great wealth and abundance, and it represents the treasures that were found there, such as gold, jewels, and precious metals. This is another aspect of Persephone's connection to the Underworld and her role as a divinity of death and rebirth.

• Trees: they represent the natural cycle of life and death, as they grow and flourish during the warm months, then shed their leaves during the winter months, before starting the cycle all over again.Trees are also associated with fertility and rebirth, as they produce seeds and fruit that propagate new life. This ties in with Persephone's role as a Goddess of spring, and her connection with the Underworld and the cycles of nature.

FACTS ABOUT PERSEPHONE:

• She takes her role in the Underworld seriously.

• Her epithets included but were not limited to: Despoina (The Mistress), Melindia (Honey), Aristi Cthonia (Best Cthonic), and Kore (The Maiden).

• Unlike Hera and Amphitrite, Persephone didn’t have a husband that constantly cheated on her (she was married to Hades). However, there is a myth about her cheating on Hades with Adonis, depending on the version. As far as I know, Hades did nothing about the matter. I think that implies it didn’t count as cheating to him, or maybe Persephone only loved Adonis as her son, which makes sense to me since she raised him. But yes, it’s perfectly acceptable and legitimate to say she cheated on Hades.

• Persephone is often called a spring or vegetation goddess but all that seems to mainly be related to Demeter, her mother, when it’s time for Persephone to return her. Truly incidental. Persephone was much more an Underworld goddess than a flowery Goddess.

• There’s evidence to suggest that, as far as religious history goes, Persephone as a character in religion is older than Hades, and was an underworld deity too.

• Some sources suggest Persephone was the mother of Dionysus, but to be fair Dionysus has a bajillion origin stories.

• As far as I know, and correct me if I’m wrong, it wasn’t too popular to depict Persephone with red hair colours until the Victorian era, when a popular red-headed model was used for a famous painting of Proserpina (the Roman equivalent to Persephone). Before, she had occasionally been depicted with red hair, but black and blonde were just as popular. Nowadays, in media, she’s often portrayed as red or pink haired, although even that trend is dying again.

• Some people like to think Persephone was a minor or weak goddess. That was simply not true. She was considered frightening in her own right.

• Someone tried to kidnap her right from the Underworld. Hades had him attached to a chair for eternity.

HOW TO INVOKE PERSEPHONE:

First, set up an altar or sacred space dedicated to her, you can then set offerings such as candles, flowers, and other symbolic items are also essential to respectfully honouring her. Prayers and incantations can be said to her to ask for guidance, support, and her blessings. Meditation and visualization can be used to feel Persephone's presence and connect with her energy. Feast days and holidays can also be celebrated to honour her.
